Me&Ro Blanquart Jewelers now carries Hollywood’s favorite line

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge What do Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore, Mariska Hargitay and Blanquart Jewelers have in common? They all have Me&Ro Jewelry. What is Me&Ro Jewelry you ask? Good question, although you have probably seen it before and don’t even realize it. Mariska Hargitay wears it on “Law & Order: SVU,” Julia Roberts wore it in the movie “Duplicity,” Jennifer Anniston wore it in the movie “Marley & Me,” and appearances continue with a whole list of starring roles in other movies and television shows. Me&Ro is an exclusive designer line of jewelry that was created by CEO Robin Renzi. Renzi expresses herself through the art of making jewelry and was inspired to create the line by the human need both to adorn and to communicate through jewelry. The designer line emphasizes the wear-ability of its creations through simplistic designs of some of the finest materials with top quality craftsmanship.

The designs are integrated with precious, rare, and semi-precious stones, including brown diamonds, rubies, multi-colored sapphires, antique Tibetan coral, andalusite, Brazilian opals, turquoise, lapis and rutilated quartz, to name a few. Known for its stackable rings, hammered bangles, personal amulets and hoops of all sizes, the jewelry pursues an aesthetic of simple beauty. Many of the amulets, medallions and other jewelry pieces contain messages that either reflect the wearer’s personality or can be a message from a gift giver. The jewelry can contain Chinese characters or Sanskrit, but has the English interpretation on the back side of the pieces. Since the written Chinese language is essentially a picture language, characters are used as metaphors. The ancients penned characters as a means of spiritual elevation, which became the inspiration for the use of the symbols on Me&Ro jewelry. The jewelry may contain one or several symbols. Sanskrit is a highly organized language with complex grammar. It has been spoken

longer than any other known language. It was handed down by word of mouth until 300 B.C. when it became a written language. The word “Sanskrit” itself means “perfect,” “perfected,” “literary,” and “polished.” Again as with the Chinese language, the spiritual and deep meaning of the symbols of the language inspired the use in the jewelry line. Not only is it the intention of Me&Ro to bring a beautifully handcrafted creation to the consumer, but the company passionately supports a long list of charitable organizations. Specific pieces have been designed to emulate individual charity missions, such as a piece worn by Mariska Hargitay that reads “Fearless,” and was designed specifically and proceeds benefit Hargitay’s charity “Joyful Heart Foundation.” There are numerous other charities that the designer jewelry company is affiliated with. Not only is Me&Ro dedicated to helping raise awareness and funds for a number of charities, but they are committed to using environmentally friendly resources and are always seeking ways to reduce the carbon

footprint on this earth. They now use 100 percent recycled gold in their 18K castings. Approximately 60 percent of their 10K castings and all of their 18K and 10K chains are made from recycled gold. Blanquart Jewelers, a third generation jewelry store that was started by George Blanquart in 1936, is continuing to bring their customers both quality and style by now being one of an elite few jewelers to be authorized to sell the Me&Ro Jewelry collection in their stores. “We wanted to bring a line that is only carried in a few exclusive stores to our customers. We know they will appreciate Me&Ro,” said Jay Blanquart, third generation owner of Blanquart Jewelers. Blanquart Jewelers in Edwardsville is located in the Schnuck’s Plaza at 2322 Troy Road. Many pieces from the Me&Ro collection are on display at Blanquart’s and they welcome anyone who would like to see the pieces to come in and experience the beautiful collection. If you would like to learn more about Me&Ro, you can also visit their site at www. meandrojewelry.com.

Celebrate Kwanzaa at the Garden Celebrate the contemporary African-American holiday of “Kwanzaa: Festival of the First Fruits” at the Missouri Botanical Garden on Tuesday, Dec. 30 from noon to 4 p.m. Kwanzaa is a non-religious holiday that derives its name from the Swahili term matunda ya kwanza, meaning “fruits of the

harvest.” The annual event honors African traditions and history, with storytelling and music to celebrate the harvest feast before the dry season. A table of fruits, vegetables and grains will be displayed. Kwanzaa is traditionally celebrated for seven days, each dedicated to a guiding principle: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. A ceremony at noon and 3 p.m. will explain the holiday’s origins as one symbolic candle on the kinara is lit for each principle. Following each ceremony, Janice “Mama”

Katambwa will tell stories of Africa using costumes and percussion. Renata’s African Influences, Ajanaku Jewelry and Mama Katambwa’s Boutique will offer Kwanzaa crafts and jewelry for purchase. The Garden Gate Shop also offers an assortment of Africanmade crafts and music CDs. “Kwanzaa: Festival of the First Fruits,” is included with Garden admission $8; St. Louis City and County residents enjoy discounted admission of $4 and free admission o n We d n e s d a y a n d S a t u rd a y mornings until noon. Music

Singing in the new year

Music lineup set for First Night

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Soon the wrapping paper will be bagged up for the trash, the shopping rush a mere memory and that Christmas tree will be heading for the recycling wood chipper. It will be time to celebrate the new year. This year will mark the 17th year for First Night. First Night is a community celebration of the New Year expressed through the arts. It is a major visual and performing arts festival created by and for the community to welcome the New Year. This year ’s theme is “Wonderland,” which by definition means “a magical place or experience.” The transformed Grand Center will be a magical celebration of the arts through lights, characters, performances and activities that are sure to provide many magical experiences and memories. Grand Center will be illuminated and animated in a colorful display of lights and projections throughout the district; listen to the sounds of more than 25 musical groups and individuals; and watch in awe at the illuminating and dazzling glowin-the-dark juggling act of Lazer Vaudeville. There’s magic, theater, comedy, drama, dance and much, much more. Music of all varieties captures the festive nature of this year ’s First Night-St. Louis celebration, with performances ranging from blues and jazz to Latin and pop. The everpopular New Year ’s Eve festival always delivers the best local and regional performance artists, and this year it features more than 25 musical performances, many new to the event, that are sure to satisfy any musical pallet. Some of this year’s acts include: • The Cadence (Countdown Stage at Grand and Lindell): A percussion rock group from Springfield, Mo., The Cadence gained national attention as a finalist on the hit TV show “America’s Got Talent.” The group’s act entails banging out rhythms on 55-gallon oil drums, paint buckets, pipes and hubcaps. Performing on the Countdown Stage at Grand and Lindell, The Cadence will lead the countdowns to both fireworks displays and the New Year in their debut appearance at First Night. • Gene Dobbs Bradford and the Blues Inquisition (Third Baptist Church): This powerhouse band

December 24, 2009

has been showcased alongside some of the area’s best jazz and blues musicians. As one of St. Louis’ top harmonica players, Gene Dobbs Bradford leads The Blues Inquisition in a high energy performance that reminds us why St. Louis loves the blues! • Javier Mendoza (Main Stage at Grand and Washington): Mendoza is new this year to First Night, and with both a Spanish and Mexican family influence, his background has a cultural diversity that is illustrated in his music. His songs are driven by unique guitar rhythms and deeply meaningful, poetic lyrics to create vibrant performances with an electrifying atmosphere. • Café Danza (Sheldon Ballroom): In the group’s first appearance at First Night, Farshid Soltanshahi brings a new aspect of world music to the event, and this time there is plenty of room to get up and salsa, samba, and rumba to the music. It’s our own Buena Vista Social Club. • Brian Owens (Sheldon Concert Hall): A newcomer to First Night, Owens calls St. Louis home, but the rest of the nation is taking note of his signature style with recent appearances on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and “The Wayne Brady Show.” Owens makes jazz accessible with complex yet understated vocal interpretations that have garnered him rave reviews and a growing fan base. • Wack-A-Doo (Kranzberg Arts Center): In their first performance at First Night, this high-energy folk group performs “AmericanMusette,” a mix of toe-tapping vintage swing, folksy Americana and speakeasy syncopation. Fronted by vocalist Valerie Tichacek, their upbeat style is reminiscent of nostalgic eras: the cafés of Europe, Prohibition, and the back porch swing. • The Sheldon Acoustic Aces (Sheldon Concert Hall): The Sheldon Acoustic Aces bring traditional folk, bluegrass, Americana, and works by contemporary singersongwriters to their home stage in their first appearance at First Night. Assembled by guitarist and vocalist John Higgins, this talented troupe features guitar, mandolin, dobro, fiddle, upright bass and vocals. A true showcase of regional talent! • Captivation (The Francis Xavier College Church, Ballroom): This trio’s exciting, eclectic repertoire includes hits from great Motown and soul groups that dominated the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. These three gentlemen

“The Blind Side”

This redemption-minded sports flick serves its inspiration straight-up with no twist. Writer-director John Lee Hancock wisely lets the true story of Michael Oher — the AfricanAmerican teen who found a home and, eventually, football stardom, after being adopted by a wealthy Memphis family — speak for itself. That direct focus delivers a feel-good crowdpleaser, but it also drains the film of the kind of subtle nuances that might have separated it from other Hollywood Hallmarklike efforts, including Hancock’s own “The Rookie.” The movie dutifully chronicles the transformation of Oher (newcomer Quinton Aaron) from blank slate to a fully formed young man, emphasizing the involvement of Leigh Ann Tuohy (Sandra Bullock). Bullock brings her trademark spunkiness to the mother hen role, delivering an iron-willed woman who looks past appearances to do the right thing. RATING: PG-13 for one scene involving brief violence, drug and sexual references. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“The Twilight Saga: New Moon”

As every Stephenie Meyer fan knows, this is the one where studly vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) dumps human girlfriend Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) for her own safety, and she turns to old chum Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) for solace, unaware that he’s a werewolf, and therefore Edward’s sworn enemy. Fans will turn out in blockbuster legions, but here are a few of the many things wrong with director Chris Weitz’s adaptation: It’s really two half moons, or two halves of a movie that don’t quite fit. Mopey teenager Bella has all the luster of, well, a mopey teenager. The real rivalry is whether werewolves or vampires can behave with greater preposterousness and pretension. Finally, “New Moon” is boring, eternally so. The soap-opera melodrama of Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner’s performances provides some unintentional laughs. Yet Stewart is on screen almost all the time, and her Bella is just a drag to be around. With her flat speech and listless presence, it’s unfathomable how two different sets of monsters could fixate so completely on her. RATED: PG-13 for some violence and action. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“Everybody’s Fine”

For those weary of the cuddly Robert De Niro, the gentle

December 24, 2009

uplift of his latest film probably isn’t going to be tonic for the soul. Playing a retiree looking to reconnect with his adult children, De Niro does offer a master class of minimalist acting. If writer-director Kirk Jones (“Waking Ned Devine”) had allowed his lead actor a bit more room to roam into the dark corners of his character, the movie’s fast path toward latelife insight would have felt more earned. Still, De Niro’s work possesses such a quiet power that Jones’ well-crafted film disappoints only in the sense that it could have delivered more. With Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell as the grown children. RATED: PG-13 for thematic elements and brief strong language. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Up in the Air”

For two-thirds of the journey, George Clooney’s travelingman comedy flies even straighter and truer than director Jason Reitman’s teen-pregnancy hit “Juno,” delivering snappy screwball dialogue with deep touches of pathos. The film strays off course in the final act, veering from an insightful portrait of willful disconnection in our age of portability and turning kind of mushy, kind of vague, kind of conventional. Clooney plays his character — a man who lives for his frequent-flyer life, traipsing the country firing people at downsizing companies — to perfection, presenting a lovably over-confident road-trip warrior. He’s matched with great travel companions in Vera Farmiga as his frequentflyer soul mate and Anna Kendrick as a young colleague whose innovations could ground him for good. Reitman’s production is first-class, but the movie ends up landing on familiar turf rather than the bold, exotic location where it seemed bound early on. RATED: R for language and some sexual content. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Invictus”

Clint Eastwood’s latest is a sports film less about what’s on the playing field than what’s happening in the stands. It’s the story of South Africa’s sea change under Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) told through the unlikely prism of sport. It comes off like a case study in leadership, perhaps a bit clinical and limited, but still deeply revealing. When Mandela takes office in 1994, he embraces the rugby national team, the Springboks, and seeks to turn a symbol of apartheid into a beacon of hope. It feels like destiny fulfilled hearing Freeman — who has long sought to play the role — speak Mandela’s halting, humble speech. No one could be better. “Invictus” is dripping with inspiration, and Eastwood’s extraordinary late period remains a good place

to find it. With a blond, beefed-up Matt Damon as the rugby team’s captain and one truly terrible song from a South African boy band. RATED: PG-13 for brief strong language. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“The Lovely Bones”

Odd as it sounds, Peter Jackson needed to come down to Earth a bit more in his adaptation of Alice Sebold’s bestseller about a murdered girl looking back on her life from beyond. The visionary filmmaker behind “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy still is in fantasy land, and the film suffers for it as Jackson crafts lovely but ineffectual dreamscapes of the afterlife that eviscerate much of the human side of the story. Saoirse Ronan leads an able cast chronicling her character ’s journey from sensitive 14-year-old schoolgirl to shattered soul stuck in a nether zone between earth and heaven. The images often are striking, but the spectacle Jackson creates distracts from the mortal drama of regret and heartache he’s trying to tell. Rose McIver as Ronan’s younger sister delivers a standout performance in a cast that includes Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci. RATED: PG-13 for mature thematic material involving disturbing violent content and images, and some language. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“A Single Man”

This drama of grief and loss easily could have been one of those style-over-substance visual dazzlers, coming as it does from Tom Ford, the fashion designer who revived the house of Gucci. Yet with Colin Firth delivering a career performance that’s pure elegance and heartache and Julianne Moore providing graceful support, the film works as engaging drama as well as the sumptuous collection of images you’d expect from first-time director Ford. Adapted from a Christopher Isherwood novel, the film gorgeously recreates 1960s design and decor, the production values so showy they could have overwhelmed this quiet story of a gay academic lamenting the death of his longtime lover. On-screen virtually the entire film, Firth is riveting, the vibrant charm of his work in “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and other frothy romances easily co-existing with his character’s melancholy as we follow him through a single day, which he intends to end by taking his own life, no longer able to go on without the love of his life. RATED: R for some disturbing images and nudity/sexual content. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Effects help save “Avatar” By JAKE COYLE Associated Press When a film brashly asserts that it will change moviemaking forever, one feels the urge to either take its “king of the world” arrogance down a notch or hail it as the masterpiece it claims to be. But — and forgive us if this sounds too much like the dialogue in President Obama’s war room — what if there’s a third option? James Cameron’s 3-D “Avatar” has all the smack of a Film Not To Miss — a movie whose effects are clearly revolutionary, a spectacle that millions will find adventure in. But it nevertheless feels unsatisfying and somehow lacks the pulse of a truly alive film. “Avatar” takes place in the year 2154 on the faraway moon of Pandora, where, befitting its mythological name, the ills of human life have been released. The Earth depleted, humans have arrived to mine an elusive mineral, wryly dubbed Unobtainium. The Resources Developmental Administration, a kind of military contractor, is running the operation. At the top of the chain of command is the CEO-like Carter Selfridge (an excellent, ruthless Giovanni Ribisi), who’s hellbent on showing quarterly profits for shareholders. His muscle and head of security is the rock-jawed Col. Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who curses Pandora’s inhabitants (the Na’vi) as savages and considers the place worse than hell. In fact, it’s a paradise. In Pandora, Cameron has fashioned a sensual, neon-colored, dreamlike world of lush jungle, gargantuan trees and floating mountains. Its splendor is easily the most wondrous aspect of “Avatar.” Cameron, like the deep sea diver that he is (his only films since 1997’s

Associated Press

In this film publicity image released by 20th Century Fox, the character Neytiri, voiced by Zoe Saldana, and the character Jake, voiced by Sam Worthington are shown in a scene from, “Avatar.” “Titanic” have been underwater documentaries), lets his camera peer with fascination at the glow-in-thedark plant life, the six-legged horses and — especially beautiful — the nighttime frog-like creatures that, when touched, open a bright white sail and spiral into the air. It’s this sense of discovery — in Pandora, in the wizardry of the filmmaking — that makes “Avatar” often thrilling. Our main character is Jake Sully

(Sam Worthington), a brawny former Marine who lost the power of his legs in battle on Earth. His scientist twin brother has just died and Sully, having a matching genome, is invited to replace him in a mission to Pandora. He joins a small group of scientists led by Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) who are attempting to learn more about the Na’vi by conducting field studies and doing a bit of undercover

science. They’ve created avatars of themselves to go about Pandora as a living, breathing Na’vi, while their human bodies lie dormant in a sort of tanning bed (they return to them when their avatars sleep). The Na’vi are a 10-foot-tall species with translucent, aqua-colored skin, 3-fingered hands and smooth, lean torsos. They have long, neat dreadlocks for hair and wide, feline foreheads. The smart freckles on their brow faintly light up like tiny

constellations. With beady headdresses and skimpy sashes, the Na’vi are clearly meant to evoke Native Americans, as well as similarly exploited tribes of South America and Africa. They pray over slain animals and feel at one with nature. Their tails (oh, yes, they also have tails) even connect — like nature’s USB port — to things like mystical willow branches, horse manes or the hair of pterodactyl-like birds.

Disney serves up a nice surprise By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Two films opened this week in advance of the blockbuster holiday break and I was surprised by the one I liked more. It’s nice to be surprised by yourself every once in a while. “Invictus,” Clint Eastwood’s film about the early days of Nelson Mandela’s presidency in South Africa, was finely made. It was actually a very realistic feeling film like I don’t see very often. Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman were both excellent, as usual, but most especially in their two brief scenes together. It’s definitely worth the viewing, but I was more smitten with a funny frog and a certain princess who helps him out of a slimy situation. Walt Disney Pictures returns to their traditional two-dimensional, hand-drawn animation with “The Princess and the Frog.” I wasn’t screaming for the reversion, but maybe somebody should have been. The

ROBERT’S RANKING: three and a half stars out of four. look is much different than what we’ve come to appreciate with the advance of computer-generated cartoons, but there is no match for the lush colors and sparkling light that comes from this film. Set in New Orleans in the early part of the last century, this familiar story focuses on Tiana (voice of Anika Noni Rose), a pretty and well-liked waitress with big aspirations. She wants to open her own supper club with swank chandeliers and fancy place settings. It was

her daddy’s dream that he never realized and Tiana took up the mantle when he was killed in World War I (unseen, though death and the afterlife are big background topics throughout this picture). Tiana isn’t really a princess. She dresses up like one for a costume party where she meets the bee-bopping Prince Naveen (voice of Bruno Campos), the guest of her rich, husband-hunting friend, Charlotte (voice of Jennifer Cody). Due to the trickery of an evil practitioner of the dark arts, known as Dr. Facilier (voiced beautifully by Keith David), Tiana and the Prince are turned into bug-gulping, bug-eyed green frogs and dumped in the bayou. During their hop back to the Big Easy, they meet a slew of Disney-style characters--a Dixieland alligator (voice of Michael-Leon Wooley) and a Creole firefly (played by master voice actor Jim Cummings)--who help them defeat Dr. Facilier and save Charlotte and her Big

Daddy (voice of John Goodman) from his evil plan. Along the way, in the yellow moonlight and under the shimmering stars, Tiana and Naveen find that they might have more in common than just being frogs. And then the magic happens. “The Princess and the Frog” combines the best elements of the great Disney classics from the early ‘90s. The colors are as sharp as The Lion King. The comic relief is as great as Robin William’s Genie in Aladdin, and the music is top-notch, rivaling even Beauty and the Beast. Anika Noni Rose, who actually greatly resembles Tiana, is a talent. She hits her notes beautifully and I can‘t help but keeping humming those jazzy tunes. Most people know her as the actress from “Dreamgirls” who isn’t Jennifer Hudson or Beyonce. But not for long. This kid’s going places. Especially when your under-billed co-star is Oprah Winfrey.

THIN

Exhibit puts eating disorders in focus

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Gallery 210, located on the University of Missouri-St. Louis Campus, is opening an exhibit that brings awareness to the struggles of eating disorders. THIN, a multimedia photographybased exhibition about eating d i s o rd e r s b y i n t e r n a t i o n a l l y recognized photographer/ filmmaker Lauren Greenfield is the latest exhibition opening at the gallery. The exhibition weaves together large-scale portraits and documentary photographs; recorded voices, videos and narrative texts; educational facts and resources, to bring museum audiences a multimedia experience of a pervasive cultural problem that although has been brought to the public forefront, still needs and deserves the public’s attention. Lauren Greenfield’s exhibition, THIN is a collection of 53 photographs, video, personal journals and candid interviews with women who suffer from eating disorders. Together, these items collectively offer museum visitors a portrayal of profound insight in an attempt to help foster understanding of eating disorders and how they affect people of all ages today. According to research conducted by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, the National Eating Disorders Association reports that eating disorders affect 10 million women in the U.S. today, affecting one in seven young American women. A d d re s s i n g t h e s e s t a g g e r i n g trends, Lauren Greenfield’s THIN, exhibition connects museum and gallery visitors with the women who are the subjects of Greenfield’s award-winning HBO documentary, “THIN.” The exhibition features stirring portraits and a revealing collection of stories of these women’s battles with anorexia and bulimia.

December 24, 2009

In the film and in the exhibit, Greenfield profiles four patients at Renfrew Center in Coconut Creek, Fla., a residential facility dedicated to the treatment of individuals with eating disorders. The women profiled are: Brittany, a 15-year-old who is convinced that being thin is the only way to gain acceptance among her peers; Shelly, 25, who has been battling anorexia for years and has had a feeding tube surgically implanted in her stomach; Alisa, 30, a divorced mother of two whose hatred of her body is manifested in her relentless compulsion to purge; Polly, 29, who, despite years spent in and out of treatment, bucks the Center’s rules at every turn. These women’s personal stories are complemented by a collection of photos showing life at Renfrew and portraits of 15 other residents of diverse ages and backgrounds. A 14minute selection of scenes from the film “THIN” also brings more layers of Greenfield’s vision to the gallery

experience. ”I began ‘THIN’ with an interest in the most pathological and exaggerated manifestation of the ‘body project’ that engages most of us to some lesser degree,” Lauren Greenfield said of the exhibit. “Eating disorders seemed a cautionary tale about society’s

unhealthy emphasis on our physiques and the implied relationships between our inner and outer attributes.” Acclaimed photographer Lauren Greenfield is considered a preeminent chronicler of y o u t h c u l t u re a s a re s u l t o f her groundbreaking projects “Girl Culture” and “Fast F o r w a r d . ” H e r p h o t o g r a p h s have been widely exhibited and are in many museum collections including the Los Angles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the International Center of Photography. Named by American Photo, Lauren Greenfield is one of the 25 most influential photographers working today. The Arts Artistic adventures Touhill to host Teatro Lirico D’Europa Teatro Lirico D’Europa will return to St. Louis and the Touhill Performing Arts Center with Giuseppe Verdi’s classic opera La Traviata for one performance only on Saturday, January 16. Curtain time is 8 p.m. in the Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall. A t r a g i c s t o r y a b o u t thwarted happiness, shame and selfless sacrifices, this opera is “extraordinary” and “heartbreaking,” said the Boston Phoenix. Set in 19th century Paris, Giuseppe Verdi’s classic opera tells the story of a young man who falls in love with a wealthy French courtesan; an affair that’s doomed from the start. With magnificent music sweeping across Paris salons and the countryside, this is one of opera’s most enduring, dramatic and melodic works Teatro Lirico D’Europa, one of Europe’s preeminent touring opera companies, will present a fullystaged version of La Traviata with a symphony orchestra, a chorus of trained singers and professional dancers. It will also present this opera in Italian with English supertitles, and is the only U.S. touring company performing opera in Italian. Teatro Lirico D’Europa was created in 1988 by Bulgarian opera singer Giorgio Lalov and the late Yves Josse, a former ballet diva and successful French arts promoter. The collaboration between Josse and Lalov was a huge success in a very short time, resulting in tours with over 250 performances a season. This is the company’s second production as part of the Touhill’s 2009-10 season. To further enhance the patron’s live experience at La Traviata, the Touhill is offering the E3! program, Explore – Experience – Engage, in association with this performance. E3! pre-show discussions, which

begin 50 minutes prior to the performance, and post-show receptions are free to ticket holders. Tickets for La Traviata are $45, $35 and $30. They are available now at the Touhill Performing Arts Center Ticket Office; online at www.touhill. org; or by phone at 314.516.4949. The Touhill’s Ticket Office is located at One University Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63121. All St. Louis area students receive a 10% discount on two tickets with their I.D. Group and senior discounts are also available. The Touhill Performing Arts Center is located on the north campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, just 10 minutes from Clayton. (Exit #240 from I-70). There is ample free parking, and the UMSL North Campus MetroLink

Station is just steps from the Touhill’s main entrance.

JAC hosting new exhibit “Eye Witness” is a collection by local artist James K. Schmidt at the Jacoby Arts Center now through January 10, 2010 at 627 E. Broadway in Alton. “Eye Witness” is an exhibition by James K. Schmidt, who works from his studio in Elsah, and who is known for seeing patterns in nature through the lens of a classic Modernist, distilling organic forms into a dynamic whole. He is a MFA graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, a professor of Architecture

and Design at Cornell University and Professor Emeritus of Fine Art at Principia College. Schmidt has exhibited internationally and his works of art are in numerous public and private collections. “Eye Witness records that which has inspired me to put into visual form facets of personal discovery,” says Schmidt. “Art of the last century has been concerned with aesthetic reconstruction. The

visual world, with emphasis on natural phenomena, is what has given me inspiration for the particular assemblage of imagery. By eye witness I mean responding to what one actually sees and the background associations that this seeing experience brings to thought. Art clarifies and gives fresh meaning to what is often unnoticed. It helps us recognize similarities and propels continuous exploration.”

Travel Travel briefs 10 ski resorts with diversions for the rest of us NEW YORK (AP) — Skiers want nothing but to be on the slopes this time of year. But what if they bring friends or family along who don’t ski? Shermans Travel — http://www. shermanstravel.com — a publisher of travel deals and destination advice, has come up with a list of 10 of the best ski resorts in the world for nonskiers, from the Alps to New England to the West. They are: —Austria’s Bad Gastein, home to 18 natural hot springs in addition to challenging snow bowls and highaltitude views. Shermans Travel recommendation for value lodging: Haus Hirt Hotel & Spa. —Megeve, France, where no one hits the slopes before 11 a.m. and lunch can take hours. Local Michelin-rated eateries include Flocons de Sel, La Ferme de Mon Pere, and the hidden Domaine de la Sasse, reached by a 20-minute hike on snowshoes. —Mont Tremblant, in Quebec, Canada, where skiers love the wide runs and nonskiers love the pedestrian-friendly village with good food and great apres-ski. Value lodging recommendation from Shermans: Chateau Beauvallon. — P a r k C i t y, U t a h , w h i c h has terrain for every skier, and attractions for nonskiers like the Kimball Art Center, shows at the Egyptian Theatre, and the annual film festival at Sundance each January. —Sierra Nevada — no, not the mountain range in California and Nevada — the one in Spain. Yes, skiing is possible in a sunny, Mediterranean country. For activities off the slope, head to Grenada, an hour from the Pradollano ski village. —Stowe, Vt., offers New England charm for skiers and nonskiers alike, including 50 restaurants, a halfdozen wellness centers and spas, and for those who are shy of the slopes but don’t mind cross-country, the Nordic Center at Trapp Family Lodge, with 90 scenic miles of trails. —Sun Valley, Idaho, which offers sunny slopes on Mount Baldy for skiers and the Western charm of Ketchum for nonskiers. Pay your respects at the grave of Ernest Hemingway or spend the afternoon at galleries, spas, and boutiques. —Taos, N.M., with sun and steep slopes for skiers, plus 80 galleries, seven museums, A-list restaurants like Joseph’s Table for everyone e l s e . S h e r m a n s Tr a v e l v a l u e recommendation for lodging is the Historic Taos Inn. —Whistler Blackcomb, where the Peak 2 Peak gondola will take you between the summits of Whistler and Blackcomb whether you’re skiing or just sightseeing. Shermans says the village is also known for its rowdy nightlife.

December 24, 2009

—Zermatt, Switzerland, a fantasyland in the shadow of the Matterhorn, where the streets are lined with glitzy shops and glam clubs but are otherwise quiet, thanks to the ban on gas-powered cars.

Bon Appetit: Food specialty shops now offering in-store dining NEW YORK (AP) — Food markets and specialty stores are no longer just places to buy supplies for

making meals at home. Many now offer dining on the premises as well, according to Bon Appetit magazine’s December issue. That’s good news for tourists, who may enjoy strolling through a famous food market but have no way to prepare or enjoy fresh produce or raw ingredients if they’re staying in a hotel. Here are some of what Bon Appetit calls the best dining spots in stores around the U.S.: —Surfas, in Culver City, Calif., a restaurant supply store with an adjacent cafe. —Oxbow Public Market, in Napa, Calif., which has five restaurants, plus a micro-winery, culinary bookstore, and specialty tea store. —Il Cane Rosso, an eatery in San Francisco’s Ferry Building Marketplace in the Embarcadero, where you’ll also find retailers like

Sur La Table and Culinaire antiques. —B&G Oysters and The Butcher Shop, eateries that are among four foodie places in Boston, all at the intersection of Waltham and Tremont streets. The others are Stir, which offers cookbooks and a demonstration kitchen, and Plum Produce, a shop for specialty foods. —Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis, which offers more than 40 locally owned shops under one roof, including Taqueria Los Ocampo. —Despana, in New York City, a boutique in Soho specializing in the foods of Spain. But there’s also a hidden lunch counter serving tapas, sandwiches and small-plate appetizers. —Bolsa in Dallas, which hosts a farmer ’s market and a cafe with wine and local products like chocolate, cookies and coffee.

Exploring the culinary arts Le Cordon Bleu academy grows in St. Peters By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The passion for cooking seems to be spreading. Whether it has been as a result of the popularity of the Food Network or shows like “Hell’s Kitchen” or “Iron Chef,” culinary arts are becoming one of the most popular selections in career choices. Not only are high school graduates choosing to enter the culinary field, but an influx of career transitioning students of all ages are making up more than half of the registrants at many of the culinary arts schools. This is definitely the case at one of St. Louis’ newest culinary art schools and one of the most world renowned, Le Cordon Bleu. Le Cordon Bleu opened its culinary college in the past year in St. Peters, Mo., and are finding their classes filled to capacity. The industryrelevant training classes are taught on three skill levels, three shifts a day. The college tries hard to meet the

The program is a nine month certification program. In order to complete the program, the students are also required to complete a 180 hour internship. Beginning in January, 2010, the St. Peter’s college will add a specialized Patisserie and Baking certification program. They are looking to expand the entire program in the future to continue to meet the needs of both the students and the industry, possibly offering degreed programs. Le Cordon Bleu’s Director of Education is Chef Vicki Davenport. Chef Davenport exemplifies the excitement and perseverance that the culinary staff hopes to ingrain in each and every student that attends the college. “When classes begin, I ask the students to look around the room at the other students and yes, they may be strangers to you right now,

but these will soon be your partners in this field. Maybe you will end up carpooling with someone here or helping each other find a job or working together to accomplish a task. But you will soon realize that there will be a bond with these people that will last your lifetime,” said Chef Davenport. The students and staff become a very close-knit group, as students strive to become the best they can in their culinary skills and the staff makes sure the students do everything possible to achieve those goals. The competition is fierce in the culinary world, but Le Cordon Bleu encourages the development of each students creative expression to bring out something new in their food preparation and presentation. When prospective restaurants are in search of a chef, they know they are getting some of the best trained when they see the prospect graduated from Le Cordon Bleu. Le Cordon Bleu offers one of the best programs at one of the most economical rates. At this time, the nine month certification program costs approximately $16,000. The school is eligible for Title Four

funding, which makes most financial aid programs available for their prospective students. The college has a very successful job placement program and even hires some students who excel at both leadership and culinary skills to be teaching assistants in the classrooms. The college even partners with other schools across the country to help find employment placement in other areas of the country. When asked what makes Le Cordon Bleu unique, Chef Davenport said, “This college is for anyone who has a passion for culinary arts. We have had students who have never been in a professional kitchen or tasted certain foods and we have students who are already chefs and sou chefs, but are looking to add the prestigious name of Le Cordon Bleu to their resume. We hope to teach an appreciation for not just the artistry, but also to introduce healthier cooking with fresh fruits, vegetables and meats.” For more information on Le Cordon Bleu, located at 7898 Veterans Memorial Parkway in St. Peters, call 866-863-2061 or visit www.lcbstlouis. com.

It’s Party Time Let the “Entertaining Encyclopedia” be your guide By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge With Christmas just a whisper away and New Year ’s Eve right around the corner, entertaining is on most agendas. Most party planners are always looking for new ideas to make their soiree memorable. The book “The Entertaining Encyclopedia” is for those who are detail oriented, wanting that special touch when they plan their events. The author, Denise Vivaldo, has spent much of her career of more than 25 years as a professional caterer making events like the Academy Awards Governor’s Ball and lavish celebrity dinner parties happen. Now is your chance to learn from the best. Divided into easy-tonavigate sections, this book covers the essentials of entertaining, recipes and menus, and includes a reference guide with all the answers from A to Z. Recipes range from super sweet Nutty Blondies to irresistible Buffalo Wings and Chicken Satay and true to the book’s title, its alphabetical listings include broth or stock, chafing dishes, canapés,

CDs, and digestif, food allergies, ice, liability, and theme. If you have ever wondered what to serve at a Super Bowl party or agonized over a party theme, then this book is a must have. A couple sample recipes from “The Entertaining Encyclopedia: Buffalo Wings These wings are so great that you might want to make a double recipe. They are even good cold, right out of the fridge. I won’t tell.. Serves 6 or can be multiplied up to 4 times 1 tablespoon (15 mL) salt 1 tablespoon (15 mL) paprika 1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon (1 mL) cayenne pepper 2 pounds (1 kg) chicken wings, rinsed and patted dry 3 tablespoons (45 mL) hot pepper sauce, such as Frank’s Louisiana or your favorite, or to taste 3 tablespoons (45 mL) butter Vegetable oil 1 cup (250 mL) blue cheese dressing In a large bowl, combine salt, paprika, black pepper and cayenne. Add chicken wings and toss to coat. Set aside. In a small saucepan, over low heat, cook hot pepper sauce and butter until butter has melted. Stir to combine and remove from heat. In a heavy saucepan that is at least 5 inches (12.5 cm) deep, heat 2 inches (5 cm) of oil over medium heat until it registers 350°F (180°C) o n t h e r m o m e t e r. Wo r k i n g i n batches, fry wings until skin is crisp and juices run clear when chicken is pierced, about 8 minutes. Using tongs or a slotted spoon, remove wings to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. Toss wings in hot sauce mixture. Serve with blue cheese dressing on the side. Tip Be a traditionalist and serve these wings with celery sticks. Make Ahead You can make these wings the day before, toss with sauce, let cool completely and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To reheat, spread wings out in a single layer on a baking sheet and place in a 350°F (180°C) oven until hot, about 10 minutes. Pear Bread Pudding

This sweet dessert is out of this world when served with warm caramel sauce. Serves 6 or can be multiplied up to 4 times 13 x 9-inch, preferably glass or ceramic casserole baking dish, generously buttered 1/2 cup (125 mL) all-purpose flour 1/2 cup (125 mL) granulated sugar 1 t e a s p o o n ( 5 m L ) g ro u n d cinnamon 4 eggs, beaten 1 cup (250 mL) heavy or whipping (35%) cream 1/4 cup (50 mL) butter, melted 1 teaspoon (5 mL) almond extract 1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) vanilla extract 1 pound (500 g) firm ripe pears, peeled and chopped 1 loaf Italian bread, crusts removed, cut into 1-inch (2.5-cm) pieces (about 4 cups) 2/3 cup (150 mL) caramel sauce, warmed 1. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat flour, sugar, cinnamon, eggs, cream, butter, almond extract and vanilla until well combined. Fold in pears and bread. 2. Pour into prepared baking

dish, cover loosely with foil and let stand for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 325°F (160°C). 3. Bake, covered, in preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for about 15 minutes or until top is golden brown. 4. Scoop into dessert dishes and drizzle with caramel sauce. Tips: Italian-style loaf bread works best for this recipe. A standard sandwich bread doesn’t have enough backbone to hold up during baking. Make a double batch of this recipe, baking in a lasagna or roasting pan baking dish and increase baking time to 55 to 60 minutes. If you need more servings, make double batches and rotate baking dishes in the oven partway through to ensure even baking. Easy Extras: Garnish each serving with a few raspberries or sliced almonds. Stir in 1 cup (250 mL) semisweet chocolate chips when adding the pears. “The Entertaining Encyclopedia” is published by Robert Rose. Photos and recipes courtesy of Lisa Ekus. The book is available at most retail book stores, including Amazon. com, Borders, Barnes and Noble, and Books-A-Million.

To send us a suggestion of a restaurant to try, e-mail theedge@ edwpub.net Ruby Tuesdays 3 stars Collinsville/Fairview Heights Another sports bar themed restaurant with all the memorabilia on the walls, but a good place to eat. The prices are a little higher than a typical family restaurant. Service is normally pretty good. The Bison Burger is a great choice and their salad bar is very fresh and clean. Joe’s Crab Shack Fairview Heights 2 1/2 stars Great fun, but for the price and what you get, not really a bargain. Wait staff sing and dance and very casual dining. Alfonzo’s Maryville 3 1/2 stars Food is awesome, especially the tomato basil pizza and their bread bites. Prices are a bit higher than you would expect to pay for a pizza dinner. Good for families with kids, they can play in the arcade while you are waiting on the food, just bring your wallet.

their other dishes, all of which are very good. But those I went with love Sushi and claim that theirs is awesome. Service was very good and helpful. Buffet City Edwardsville 3 stars Huge selection of food. Chinese selections, American selections, both hot and cold. Some really good, some not so much. Dinner prices a little high if you are going as a family. Good service. Finn Inn Grafton 3 stars Fun ambiance with fish tanks built into the wall. Watch the fish while you eat. Lots of fish dishes, sandwiches, daily specials, etc. Good fish sandwich. Good service. Johnson’s Corner

Alton 3 1/2 stars They have best pork tenderloin sandwich in the world. Everything else is okay, but you won’t pay much. Service is fair. Tony’s Alton 3 stars Known for their pepperloin, they serve steaks, pasta, chicken. Prices are a bit high, so go for a special event. Dress is casual. Have outside dining also.

Signs of the season are in the air, With lights and tinsel everywhere -And a blanket of white sometimes covers the ground, Spreading joy and glad tidings all around -So at this most special time of year, We’d like to thank all of you for stopping here!

Chevy’s Fresh Mex O’Fallon 4 1/2 stars One of my personal favorites, love their fresh salsa and chips. Also love their chicken fajita nachos. Portions are large and prices are very reasonable. Service has been great every time.

Wasabi Edwardsville 4 stars Okay, I admit that I hesitantly give this four stars as I am not a lover of Sushi, nor am I an expert of Sushi. But, I have eaten their Shrimp Tempura, and have tasted some of

Cinco De Mayo Troy 3 stars Endless chips and salsa, good menu choices, typical Mexican fare. Service pretty good.

Lone Star Steak House O’Fallon 4 stars Great steaks, seafood and chicken. Salads are good, including their Texas Ranch dressing. Of course they have “bloomin’ onions” and peanuts to munch on while you wait for your food. Fun atmosphere.

Lorenzo’s Trattoria On the Hill-St. Louis 4 1/2 stars

Zia’s On the Hill-St. Louis 4 stars Their seafood stuffed mushrooms are fantastic. The appetizers alone are worth the visit. Veal, chicken, steaks, sandwiches are all offered. There homemade fresh pastas are some of the best. Average pasta dish

The tomato and fresh mozzerella salad is fantastic. The ambiance is perfect to go with another couple, a group or just two of you. Prices are a little high.

There's more keeping up with Kardashians NEW YORK (AP) — When “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” first debuted in 2007, Kim Kardashian was the star, whose claim to fame was doing a sex tape with a rhythm and blues singer named Ray J. Now, the sex tape is old news and Kardashian is famous for her fashion and beauty. But other Kardashians have plunged into the star light: Sister Khloe Kardashian’s recent wedding special grabbed 3.2 million viewers; and tabloids and blogs followed every step of sister Kourtney Kardashian’s pregnancy. (She and boyfriend Scott Disick are parents of a boy, born Monday.) Now the whole Kardashian clan has returned to E! with a fourth season of their reality show. Kourtney and Kim recently talked about family, fame and sports in an interview. AP: How have your lives changed since the first season? Kim Kardashian: “I think even from season three to season four we’ve all changed. We’ve all grown so much closer together, so this season I think you’ll definitely see that and we’ve added so many new family members to the mix now. (Kourtney Kardashian’s son, Mason Dash Disick; Khloe Kardashian’s husband, Los Angeles Laker Lamar Odom.) Khloe Kardashian: “Our dynamic

December 24, 2009

with each other has changed. I think that’s on rotation every month. We’re friends because we’re sisters but I think we rotate on which one’s our best friend.” Kim Kardashian (to Khloe): “Who’s your best friend this week?” Khloe Kardashian: “You because I’m with you more this week.” Kim Kardashian: “I’ve always

wanted to hear that!” AP: Did you aspire to be in show business? Kim Kardashian: “I don’t think we ever thought of being in the entertainment business. We started having our clothing stores six years ago before the show and we’ve always been really fashion oriented. ...The show opportunity

just happened and we’re just having so much fun.” Khloe Kardashian: “Also, as kids all of our friends where either, like, Lionel Richie’s daughter or Rod Stewart’s kids so we all grew up with a pretty cool clan of kids and parents. So ... I feel like we’ve always been, like, ... in the entertainment industry — just not well known.”

AP: Khloe, you’re married to a pro basketball player. Kim, you’re dating a pro football player. Are you sports fans? Khloe Kardashian: “I am so into basketball. I won’t watch a regular game. But when I see Lamar play, I’m so into it. I cheer and I get mad and if he gets fouled or they call a technical it’s so crazy."

It is with deepest gratitude that we extend our holiday greetings to our loyal customers, neighbors, associates and friends. Knowing people like you makes doing business a genuine joy for us all year long.
