People The hula hoop gains a local following By STEVE HORRELL Of The Edge
H
ula hoops, those colorful plastic toys that children from generations past twirled around their waists for fun, may be making a comeback.
The fun part hasn’t changed, but now they’re being taken to another level by a handful of local hoopers who are using them as fitness tools, relaxation tools and even as a way to empower women. And for a while now some of the more accomplished hoopers have been showing up at concerts by Jake’s Leg, a local Grateful Dead tribute band, and others, as a way to complement the listening experience. “When I tell people we’re hula hooping they think it’s just around the waist. Then they see us and they’re like, ‘Wow! I had no idea!” says Lataua Applegate, who, along with best friend Dulci Cargil, created an informal group two years ago that they call The Hoop Factory. Lessons cost nothing. That’s because they enjoy doing it, and because they want to eliminate money as a barrier for anyone wanting to get started. They begin with waist hooping, but the idea is that with practice and encouragement this advances to doing tricks and isolations that involve gliding the hoop over arms, hands, legs, and head. One constant is music. And bright colors. And then there is dance, or what hoopers refer to as flow. Flow is apparent when you observe a small group doing the same tricks and steps but with their own unique style, Applegate says. The Hoop Factory meets at 2 p.m. on Sundays at the Alton-Wood River Sportsman’s Club in Godfrey. Weather permitting, they also make appearances at parks and other outdoor places. There are perhaps 15 core members of the The Hoop Factory. It got its start three years ago when Applegate and Cargil began seeing hula hoopers showing up at music festivals and dazzling crowds with their rhythmic tricks. “How do you learn that?” Applegate recalls asking. Coincidentally, a hula hoop class was being offered in the area at the same time. But Applegate says that she and Cargil learned more by searching out YouTube tutorials and teaching themselves how to hula hoop. And their skill level skyrocketed. “It was just so rewarding,” Applegate says. “Once you learned something it was like high fives everywhere.” The women began asking friends to try it out "We would go to different parties and whip out our hoops, and started drawing other people in,” Applegate says. Before long a handful of women were showing up for regular meetings at Applegate’s garage in Godfrey. They named it the Hoop Shack. Applegate had it decked out with carpeting and mirrors. Most of the women were in their 20s and 30s, somewhat younger than Applegate herself. “This is something that makes me feel youthful,” she says. “It’s good exercise and self-rewarding. It’s kind of like meditation. It relieves stress. Like when you’re having a bad day and things aren’t quite right: you turn up the music and get your hoop out and it just makes you feel good about yourself and about your day.” “And one of the things I like about the hoop group is that it’s not so much about hooping as it is about how all the women really empower each other.” Michelle Schaeffer first began teaching hoop activities six years ago in St. Louis.
For The Edge
Lataua Applegate and Dulci Cargil hula hoop during a concert by Jake's Leg. Today she owns The St. Louis Hoop Club, “an organization-type platform for community-based events and education with hula hoops.” Schaeffer is certified to teach hoop dance, hoop fitness, and hoop yoga, and is a licensed and insured circus performer as well. About seven years ago, when Schaeffer was volunteering, she noticed some hula hoopers performing, and that inspired her to give it a try herself. From the Internet she learned that not only were there hooping businesses across the country, there were also community-based organizations for hula hoopers. Before long Schaeffer was partnering with a company that primarily sells hula hoops online and they helped her fund her own studio. That allowed her to add Wi-Fi and begin teaching weekly classes out of her home. Earlier this year Schaeffer joined forces with a circus-based entertainment agency called Circus Kaput. The group has been around for a couple of decades, and it provides performers for fairs, festivals, weddings, corporate events and other special occasions. Part of the deal involves a collaboration between Circus Kaput owner Josh Routh and Schaeffer on Schaeffer ’s new library showing, “Hooping Harmony.” Schaeffer also began developing her own performing character called Magnificent Mishi, which will eventually become one of the circus’s featured acts. The idea is to take hula hooping to a new level with a concept that will “combine a vintage 1950s feel with cutting edge hula hoop tricks,” Schaeffer said in an online post about the collaboration. Since she first became introduced to hula hoops, Schaeffer says their popularity has grown ten-fold. “People know what it is now. It used to be just a small group that knew about it and did it,’ she says. Most of the interest has come from
women 16 to 25, she says, though there are certainly older women in the area who hoop as well. Those wanting to purchase a hoop can find plenty of resources online. One of the most helpful is www.hooping.org, which offers tutorials with titles such as “How to Make Push Button Collapsible Hula Hoops,” and “How to Make a Polypro LED Hula Hoop.” “Hoops are kind of individual to their user, so I recommend to my students to take a class and see what works for them before they invest in their first hoop,” Schaeffer said in a phone interview. “If they get the wrong type of hoop for them it could really discourage the learning process.” There is much to like about hula hooping, she says. “You know, I enjoy just about everything. It’s a good form of expression. It really has a good community vibe to it. I just enjoy getting the exercise and feeling good about what I did afterward. And challenging myself, because it can be a very difficult activity, skill-wise.” The hula hooping craze, if there is such a thing, seems not to have caught on in Illinois, outside of Godfrey. In Belleville, Jill Terry teaches hoop fitness and hoop dance. Over the summer she offered a class that began strong but ended in September after the numbers dwindled. “We had about 15 participants and then towards the end I had a little under two per class,” she said. “It’s very unfortunate.” Recently she has been performing at kids’ birthday parties and similar events. She described flow as way of expressing who the performer is inside. An expression of thoughts, actions. When it’s done right, thoughts and actions flow together effortlessly, she says. Terry has been hula hooping for a
December 24, 2015
couple of years. Like Schaeffer, she makes her own hoops using plastic tubing used in lawn irrigation. She buys them from home improvement stores in hundred-foot coils, ¾ of an inch thick, and then measures them and cuts them to the necessary length. Beginner hoops have a larger circumference and fatter tubing while hoops for more skillful hoopers are smaller and skinnier. Hoops with all the bells and whistles can run $500 or more. Top-of-theline hoops can light up and contain geometric designs. Applegate says she waited for a year before allowing herself to get a Smart Hoop. It has thousands of designs and patterns. You can hook them up to a computer and come away with your own customized hoop, she says. Hooping connects people. “Once you meet one hula hooper, that person is probably going to know another hula hooper. It really is a tight community, because we can all relate to one another,” Jill Terry says. Terry may begin offering lessons in Edwardsville soon. “It would be good for college age but you could bring kids and have them play around when you have class,” she says. “Kids love it. It’s for all ages.” Each year Terry and her parents celebrate the day in 1958 when the modern hula hoop was invented. Terry began dancing at a “very, very early age” and says that starting her hula hooping journey has been a freeing experience. “It’s a very unique passion,” she says. “It’s not a common thing, and I like that. Even if I’m having a bad day, sometimes I can just let out that aggression. Some people do it with an aggressive workout; for hoop dancers, we just kind of let out every emotion through our hoop dance.”

Camp Forever Fun offers two getaway weekends in 2016 For The Edge Summer Camp, it's not just for kids anymore! Camp Forever Fun, the Midwest's premier all-inclusive summer camp for young adults, will run two sessions, Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend, in 2016. Over four days and three nights young adults will learn to be kids again. We'll sleep in bunk beds, wake up to the camp bells, and eat together in the mess hall. Load up on coffee; we're going to play all day! You can expect morning yoga, dodge ball, giant canoe races, tug of war, climbing wall, relaxing at the waterfront, high ropes course, face painting, capture the flag -- and much more. At night it's time to bring out kegs of really good beer (and some wine too). Get ready for campfire concerts and s'mores, talent shows, starlight beer hikes, and awesome nightly theme parties. Camp Forever Fun is located in Reading, Mich. "I know how hard it is to meet people, new friends or a romantic interest, after college," says camp director Joel Paul Reisig. "I produce movies for a living, I saw how quickly people make real and lasting friendships on my film sets, I knew that I could make this happen for hundreds of people at once and have a great time doing it!" Come with a partner or friends if you like, but most people come alone, night one is all about high-energy ice breakers. "I promise when you wake up on the first morning camp will be loaded with your friends!" There will of course also be beer. "I'm going to bring in kegs of really good beer, all brewed here in the Midwest. This isn't a frat party, we're not looking for obnoxious drunks; we're a camp for fun young professionals who want to have the best long weekend of their lives! Age is just a number, camp is forever.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
"The Danish Girl"
Most people probably don't know the name Lili Elbe. This reviewer didn't. But Tom Hooper's "The Danish Girl" will make sure you won't soon forget the transgender icon, even if this well-intentioned, extravagant movie leaves you with more questions than revelations. Almost a century before Caitlyn Jenner graced the cover of Vanity Fair, Lili Elbe (born Einar Wegener) became one of the first transgender women to undergo documented sex reassignment surgery. Eddie Redmayne, who adroitly disappeared into the character Stephen Hawking for "The Theory of Everything," has taken on the task of another transformation to portray Einar/Lili throughout her discovery and transition. He uses his androgynous frame, delicate features, and refined beauty to full effect in representing the physical realization of Lili. The timing of this film, based on the book by David Ebershoff, couldn't be more perfect and yet it also feels far too late. That's not the fault of the filmmakers here, but more a result of constantly shifting culture. This is all to say that the film has an almost impossible standard to live up to, especially now — both in doing justice to Lili's life as well as to the audience who may only learn about her through what they see on screen. In some ways it succeeds beautifully. Ideas swirl readily and boldly, especially considering the time in which it's taking place. This is not a shy movie. In fact, it's refreshingly sexual, alive and empathetic, at least at the start. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for some sexuality and full nudity. RUNNING TIME: 120 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Chi-Raq"
More alive than most of the year's films put together, Spike Lee's "Chi-Raq" is urgent agitprop that pulsates with unalloyed rage for the "self-inflicted genocide" of South Chicago and explodes with full-hearted (and gloriously lewd) pleas for peace. It's wildly uneven but it is wild. There's plenty here to quibble with (the film's title prompted outrage in Chicago), but unassailable is its passion to bring attention and compassion to Chicago's blood-soaked streets. "This is an emergency" flashes across the screen early in "Chi-Raq," a hip-hop musical and a social satire that Lee co-wrote with Kevin Willmott ("C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America") and sets to the beat of Terence Blanchard's score. It's an updating of Aristophanes' ancient Greek comedy "Lysistrata," in which Athenian women wage a sex strike against their warrior men to end the Peloponnesian War. Lee and Willmott have transplanted the tale to Chicago, where the murder rate has far surpassed the number of Americans killed in Iraq. Lee is best as a megaphone for street-level outrage. Whereas most filmmakers gradually ebb in spiritedness as they age, Lee — in good and not-so-good films — has remained uniquely unpredictable and remarkably prolific. His last great film, 2006's "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts," fed off the fury of New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina. "Chi-Raq," which takes its title from the controversial nickname for the violence-plagued city, is Lee's most vital film at least since then. It's a farce, wrapped heavily in stylistic overtures, with maybe a half-dozen introductions to Chicago and to "Chi-Raq," including Nick Cannon's "Pray 4 My City," played with lyrics blazed across the screen, and Samuel Jackson's pimplike narrator, Dolmedes, who raps, "We can't take this much more." The story takes a long time to arrive, and when it does, it and the characters remain secondary to the overall frenzy of

"Macbeth"
William Shakespeare's Scottish play gets a highly stylized, moody and occasionally mystifying update, courtesy of Justin Kurzel, the Australian director responsible for the haunting "Snowtown." For the poor souls who haven't cracked "Macbeth" since high school (or those current students looking for an easy study guide), Kurzel's adaptation isn't going to do you any favors — the whispered line readings make the Bard's verses all but incomprehensible and, at times, numbingly dull. But for Shakespeare devotees who delight in debating the merits and flaws of previous big screen attempts from the likes of Orson Welles and Roman Polanski, Kurzel's entry is an interesting one. This version begins with an unsettling sight: Macbeth (Michael Fassbender) and his wife, Lady Macbeth (Marion Cotillard) witnessing the burial of their dead child atop a gusty, gray hill in the desolate Scottish Highlands. The mourning transitions into a stunningly violent and mystical battle sequence, clouded by fog and mist and slowed in parts with an almost video game-like vulgarity, where Macbeth hears the witches' prophecy that he will be King. It is in this war-weary and grief-stricken state that Lady Macbeth convinces her husband to murder King Duncan (David Thewlis). Ambition and greed fill their voids, and Macbeth becomes the executor of their future. Malcolm (Jack Reynor), King Duncan's heir, witnesses the murder and flees, adding an immediate tension to everything that happens after. More violence follows. Once Macbeth assumes the throne, he begins his slow descent into madness. Fassbender, who has mastered the tricky rhythms of Quentin Tarantino in "Inglorious Basterds" and Aaron Sorkin in "Steve Jobs," delivers Shakespeare as confidently and effectively (if too quietly) — coming alive as he loses his mind. No one plays agony quite like Fassbender. The banquet scene where Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo (Paddy Considine) is a particular highlight, though less terrifying than Polanski's rendering. Macbeth's ever heightening paranoia provides a much needed engine for the film, which, despite the visual interest, comparatively brisk pacing and mesmeric battles, is weakened by those largely whispered and mumbled lines. Kurzel's "Macbeth" is also stripped of unnecessary adornments in the script, story, and set design. You feel like a settler on an uninhabited, unforgiving land. He's even compared it to a Western. The set design is spare, purposeful and authentic. The settings are cold and small in contrast to the spectacularly harsh landscapes. The austereness allows for bold choices, like the shock of blue eyeshadow that is streaked across Lady Macbeth's eyes. It also makes her dreamily bright sleepwalking scene that much more haunting. RATED: has not been rated by the Motion Picture Association of America, but contains realistic depictions of violent warfare and disturbing imagery. RUNNING TIME:113 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"In the Heart of the Sea"
Ron Howard's "In the Heart of the Sea" is a curious beast. The ambitions are as big as a whale; the results are an earnest wreck. It could possibly work if you think of the movie as a

metaphor for the story it's trying to tell, but that's a little too meta for something that should be fairly straightforward. It's ostensibly about the real expedition that inspired Herman Melville's "Moby-Dick" that Nathaniel Philbrick wrote about in his nonfiction book. But despite a promising start, something is lost in the spectacle and the framing device, which ultimately undermines its own story. Howard uses Melville as a character (played by Ben Whishaw) and his curiosity about the mysterious circumstances of how the whaleship Essex sank as the audience's entry into the story. He's looking for big answers about the unknown. So, he finds Tom Nickerson (Brendan Gleeson), the ship's only remaining survivor, who's drinking his life away. At his wife's pleading, and Melville's promise of generous payment for one night's conversation, Tom starts to spill about the events of 30 years ago, when he was 14 (played by Tom Holland). It's best not to do the math. This is the story of two men, he says: A Captain, George Pollard (Benjamin Walker), and his first mate, Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth). Pollard is the son of the expedition's proprietor. He's wealthy, arrogant, entitled and inexperienced. Chase is the real seaman — a working-class Adonis with a classist chip on his broad shoulders. He's also arrogant, but has the skills to back it up. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "for intense sequences of action and peril, brief startling violence, and thematic material." RUNNING TIME: 121 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
"The Big Short"
In Adam McKay's comic and clear-eyed adaption of Michael Lewis' "The Big Short," a handful of finance speculators __ outsiders and oddballs __ predict a downturn in the housing market only to realize, to their horror and immense profit, that they've effectively bet against America, and won. It's a rollicking, outrage-fueled odyssey through the financial collapse of 2008, from the carefree offices on Wall Street to the vacant subdivisions in Florida, that gradually reveals not just a market bubble but a colossally bankrupt system and a nation that blissfully teetered into absurdity. As one of the pre-eminent comedy directors, McKay has shifted into a more realistic, dramatic world only to find a farce too ridiculous for satire. And as anyone who has been paying attention to McKay's comedies can attest, his humor has always come laced with biting political subtext: the TV news of "Anchorman," George W. Bush-era America in "Talladega Nights," white collar crime in "The Other Guys." He has kept his loose and antic style, leaving his starry cast __ including Steve Carell, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt __ ample room for improvising. They are part of the enticements of "The Big Short," which strains hard to make the complex finance of its subject digestible and entertaining, including occasional instructional interludes from the likes of Margot Robbie (in a bubble bath), Anthony Bourdain and Selena Gomez — eye candies for brief explanations of collateralized-debt obligations and other instruments of financial minutia. Our central characters are a foursome of (mostly) unrelated investors. There's the glass-eyed, heavy metallistening trader Michael Burry (Bale), a the brash-talking banker Jared Vennett (Gosling); a cynical hedge fund manager Mark Baum (Carell); and two young investors (John Magaro and Finn Wittrock) who are mentored by Ben Rickert (Pitt), a retired veteran who now disdains Wall Street. McKay's enjoyable, frightful, passionate rant of a movie is a plea: There's more to life than this, you know. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "pervasive language and some sexuality/nudity." RUNNING TIME: 130 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Sifting through the data, they each come to the conclusion that the bedrock of the U.S. economy __ the housing market __ has quietly been weakening. When everyone is riding the market to record highs, they swim against the tide. The story of the 2008 crisis has, of course,
been told many times before. The best portrait of the era's out-of-control excesses was Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" (set in the '80s and '90s but made in the wake of the 2008 collapse). None captured the personal pain more than Ramin Bahrani's eviction drama "99 Homes," released earlier this year. What sets "The Big Short" apart is its steadily accumulating rage. It's a movie for that modern American experience of looking around and seeing so much corporate corruption that one's head might explode. Carell captures this best, playing Baum as a pressure cooker who goes from angry to seething. What scares them most is that their bet doesn't pay off when it should; the system is so interlaced with mutual benefit that the market is rigged.
Howard likely facing strike two By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge I was a big reader when I was a kid. I'm not sure where it started, but I know I could burn through a "Hardy Boys" book in a few days and the "Boxcar Children" barely lasted an afternoon in my hot little hands. To their credit, my parents didn't do anything but encourage this great habit. One of the best gifts I ever got was a box set of Great Illustrated Classics, abridged versions of literature's best works designed specifically to introduce children to the works of authors they'd become familiar with later in life: Swift, Shelley, Verne, Twain - they were all there. One of those was "Moby-Dick" and I was able to follow Ishmael's tale of
life aboard a Nantucket whaling ship with the relentless Captain Ahab. It's an all-timer, Melville's masterpiece, and at the movies this weekend we are able to gain a little insight into his mindset when writing the book. "In the Heart of the Sea" debuted and recounts the true story behind the fish tale, that of the ill-fated Essex and her crew of hardened men. Newsflash: the whaling i n d u s t r y w a s u g l y. It was literally a business model built on brutally murdering the largest mammals on the planet in a way that not only selfishly ends their c a re f re e s w i m m i n g , b u t a l s o sucks the gallons of oil out of their hollowed out heads. The best thing "In the Heart of the Sea" is show how unglamorous this work is. It's messy, smelly,
daunting, and full of suffering for the harpooners just as much as it is for the cetaceans. I don't really have an affinity for whales, but I felt the soap box opportunity should not go unheeded. First mate Owen Chase (Thor's Chris Hemsworth) is the star of this picture, playing handler to the entitled greenhorn Captain George Pollard (Benjamin Walker). The two butt heads until their combined greed brings them far from home and at the mercy of a malicious white whale along the equator of the western Pacific. Interstitials show a night-long interview between Melville (Ben Wishaw) and the adult Thomas Nickerson (Brendan Gleeson), the last survivor of the Essex's sinking. He shares a story that the fourteen year-old version of
himself (Tom Holland, the next boy who will be Spider-man) never would have let escape his lips. After the whale scuttles them into the open boats, the men drift for ninety days before rescue saves eight of them. Some are still unaccounted for. Cannibalism may play a part in the fate of others. It's all very harrowing, but the timeline of more than fourteen months elapses at a brisk clip. Early indications are that "In the Heart of the Sea" will be director Ron Howard's second consecutive box office flop (following "Rush", which also starred Hemsworth), but it's not entirely his fault. The material is juicy, even if the plot is thin. Rare is the movie that I wish was longer. The visuals are spectacular and that means

a l l t h a t m u c h m o re t o t h o s e coming to stare at the handsome Hemsworth. The vehement obsession with the whale is absent from this story; Melville gets the points for that theme. Instead, I would suspect that timing has a lot to do with the movie's poor performance. The first two weekends of December are notorious for being devoid of moviegoers. They must all have been spending the weekend (like me) getting ready for the release of the next "Star Wars" sequel on Thursday. Should be a blast. "In the Heart of the Sea" runs 122 minutes and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and peril, brief startling violence, and thematic material. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

Religion Religion briefs Police step up mosque patrols after discovery of pig's head
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia police will step up patrols around worship sites as they look for the person who left a severed pig's head outside a city mosque. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey says investigators hope to enhance security video that shows someone throwing the animal's head out the passenger door of a red pickup truck. No arrests have been made in the Sunday night incident outside the Al Aqsa Islamic Society in west Philadelphia. The Quran, the holy book of Islam, prohibits Muslims from eating pork, and pigs have sometimes been used to taunt or offend Muslims. A caretaker told Philadelphia police that he found the head near the door of the mosque when he arrived for work Monday morning. A day later, Mayor Michael Nutter pledged a $2,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in any hate crime case.

Officer backs use of female guards at Guantanamo's Camp 7
GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) — A U.S. Army officer has defended her decision to use female guards at Guantanamo Bay's top-secret Camp 7, where Muslim prisoners say contact with unrelated women violates their religion. The officer told a court at the base in Cuba that she started to use women to transport prisoners in 2014 due to a shortage of guards. She said that a Muslim cultural adviser said it would be OK because guards were touching male prisoners as part of their duties. The officer's name was not disclosed as she testified in a pretrial hearing for five men charged in the Sept. 11 attacks. Defense lawyers say the prisoners won't attend legal meetings to avoid being handled by women. A judge has issued a temporary ban the military is seeking to lift.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has pushed open the great bronze doors of St. Peter's Basilica to launch his Holy Year of Mercy, declaring that mercy trumps moralizing in his Catholic Church. Francis stood in prayer on the threshold of the basilica's Holy Door and then walked through it, the first of an estimated 10 million faithful who will pass through over the course of the next year in a rite of pilgrimage dating back centuries. A thin and frail Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI walked through the doorway right after Francis. It was a rare outing for the 88-year-old Benedict, whose historic resignation led to Francis' election and a papacy dedicated to showing the merciful side of the church. Some 5,000 extra police and soldiers have been deployed around Rome to protect the pilgrims flocking to Rome to participate in the yearlong celebration.

The stance he takes is akin to that of a missionary: “Jimi Hendrix was one of the greatest guitar players ever and we all need to keep his music alive.” "It's an honor to celebrate Jimi Hendrix's legacy and greatness with so many other amazing players, who have become great friends and family to me,” echoes Zakk Wylde. “His influence and inspiration will forever be undeniable!"

The Arts Art museum marks 50th anniversary of Gateway Arch For the Intelligencer The Saint Louis Art Museum this fall presents St. Louis Modern, a major exhibition exploring the St. Louis region’s significant contributions to midcentury modern design through more than 150 objects drawn from the permanent collection and more than 30 museums and private lenders around the country. The ticketed exhibition will be on view from Nov. 8 through Jan. 31, 2016. Organized chronologically and thematically, the exhibition traces the emergence of modern design and its embrace in St. Louis during a 30-year period bookended by the 1935 start of planning for a major national monument on the St. Louis riverfront to the 1965 completion of Eero Saarinen’s modernist masterpiece, the Gateway Arch. St. Louis Modern features a wide variety of modern design objects and artworks that were designed or made by St. Louis-based architects, artists and designers; or purchased and used locally. In addition, galleries will highlight significant architectural commissions, public sculpture, murals and stained glass; and feature both rare and renowned examples of mass-produced design. “Planned to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the completion of the Eero Saarinen’s magnificent Gateway Arch, St. Louis Modern highlights St. Louis artists,
18
architects, and designers whose work helped shape the midcentury modern aesthetic in America and raised our city’s profile as a center of design locally, nationally and internationally,” said Brent R. Benjamin, director of the Saint
On the Edge of the Weekend
Louis Art Museum. “The civic theme is echoed by the generosity of our many local lenders whose passionate collecting of this material underscores the enduring popularity of this movement.” St. Louis Modern explores several

themes, including machine-age; aerodynamic design; mass-market design; the influence of architects and tastemakers; embellishments; and Scandinavian design. Design objects and artworks will include furniture, glass, silver and other metalwork, textiles and industrial design objects as well as paintings, drawings, photographs, models for sculpture, and stained glass. Many have never been exhibited before and their makers have been rediscovered through new research conducted for the exhibition. Architects, artists and designers featured in St. Louis Modern include Harris Armstrong, Harry Bertoia, Frederick Dunn, Charles and Ray Eames, Dorothy Liebes, Samuel A. Marx, Isamu Noguchi, Victor Hugo Proetz, Siegfried Reinhardt, Eero Saarinen and Pipsan Saarinen Swanson. Locally made industrial designs included in the exhibition range from the diminutive—a Dazey rocket-shaped ice-crusher— to the grand—a sleek 1954 Chevrolet Corvette representing the first model year that was manufactured in St. Louis and embodying the embrace of innovative materials and streamlined styling. All tickets to St. Louis Modern are timed and dated. Admission is free for Members. For the general public, tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, $6 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children age 5 and under. Tickets are available in person or through M e t ro Ti x . Ti c k e t s p u rc h a s e d through MetroTix incur a service charge. St. Louis Modern is curated by David Conradsen, the Grace L. Brumbaugh and Richard E. Brumbaugh Associate Curator of Decorative Arts and Design, and Genevieve Cortinovis, research assistant. This project has been organized by the Saint Louis Art Museum. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Gertrude and William A. Bernoudy Foundation, and by BMO Harris Bank. Financial assistance has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
St. Louis Modern is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue featuring a comprehensive essay on modern architecture in St. Louis by architectural historian Mary Reid Brunstrom; and essays on prewar and postwar modern design in St. Louis by exhibition organizers co-curators. Brunstrom offers a thoughtful analysis of both the Gateway Arch and the modern built environment that already was taking shape by the late 1920s. Conradsen and Cortinovis will expand on themes explored in the exhibition, including in-depth examinations of the city’s embrace of modern aesthetics in sculpture, silver, stained glass, murals and textiles. The catalogue will be available in the Museum Shops in November. The Museum will offer an array of exhibition-related programming, including lectures, gallery talks, a bus tour of midcentury modern architecture and other events. For more information about any exhibition-related events, visit slam. org/stlmodern.

"Newsies", the new American musical, features a Tony Awardwinning score with music by eighttime Academy Award winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman,
a book by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein and is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, "Newsies" is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, who won a 2012 Tony Award® for his work. The entire creative team has reunited to bring the break-out smash musical to audiences across North America. When it opened on March 29, 2012 "Newsies" was intended for a Broadway run of just 101 performances. The show’s fiercely devoted fans had other ideas, however; they propelled the show
to a run of 1005 performances, attendance of more than 1 million and a gross of over $100M. While on Broadway, "Newsies" set and broke seven Nederlander Theatre house records and became the highest-grossing show from the 2011-12 Broadway season. The show received 23 major theatrical nominations – including eight Tony Award nods – and won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards f or Score an d Choreography. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, "Newsies" is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a

charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘"Newsies",’ who dreams only o f a b e t t e r l i f e f a r f ro m t h e hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies "Newsies" from across the city to strike for what’s right. "Newsies" is inspired by the reallife ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway "Newsies" on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The stage version introduces seven brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman, including a song written specifically for the tour called ‘Letter from the Refuge,’ while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’ Since the film’s 1992 theatrical release and subseq uen t DVD release, "Newsies" has grown into a cult phenomenon, and for years had been the single most requested title of all the Disney musical films not yet adapted for the stage. (The film featured a screenplay by Bob Tzudiker & Noni White (Tarzan, 102 Dalmatians).) For more information, visit "Newsies"TheMusical.com, Facebook.com/"Newsies" and Twitter.com/"Newsies". The St. Louis engagement of "Newsies" is presented by arrangement with the Fabulous Fox Theatre and is a subscription offering of the U.S. Bank Broadway Series.

With no place to turn, she volunteers to move in with her friend Bam who is recovering from hip replacement surgery. Bam is so grateful that her faithful friend Mabel is putting her on life on hold in order to nurse Bam back to health. Unknown to Bam however, Madea is only using the concerned friend gag as a way to hide out from the police. But as they say‌ all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to his purpose. Madea’s presence at Bam’s house is just what the doctor ordered. Bam’s family is in desperate need of some home improvement, and it is the only kind of family makeover that Madea could deliver. Starring Tyler Perry as Madea, and Cassi Davis as Aunt Bam, “Madea On The Runâ€? delivers a couple hours of pure joy and laughter. With brand new music written by Tyler Perry, the show delivers a finger snapping and inspirational evening of theater. Madea’s life lessons on friendship, marriage, personal reflection, and overcoming, leave audiences with some great food for the soul. Don’t miss Tyler Perry’s Madea On The Run.

Above, the Dog Pizza from Gilliganz Bar and Grill It's a chicken pizza topped with a sweet buffalo sauce. Below, the Grateful Garlic Parmesan chicken wings at Gilliganz Bar and Grill at 7257 St. James Dr. in Holiday Shores.
Gilliganz Bar and Grill in Holiday Shores By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Tu c k e d a w a y n o r t h o f Edwardsville is the private lake community of Holiday Shores. If you don't know anybody there you might not have a reason to visit,. Well, now you do — Gilliganz Bar and Grill. You can find Gilliganz at 7257 St. James Dr., right on the main drag through Holiday Shores. It's a bar, but when you get a gander at the menu you find out what Gilliganz is all about. Unfortunately, their internet and social media presence is practically non existent, so you will have to journey there to get the full experience and check out a full menu. Specialty nights are commonplace at Gilliganz. I visited on a Monday night, which offers 40-cent chicken wings. I've gone there for wing night before and never been disappointed. Be prepared to wait though, it's a popular time at Gilliganz. My dinner mates and I had to wait roughly 30 minutes before sitting down to order the night we went there. Once we ordered though, the wait wasn't too terribly long. We had a few beers to tide us over. Of course the main attraction for the meal was the chicken wings. Most of the wings have clever names on the menu, such as: Honey Boo Boo BBQ (honey barbecue), Snoop Dog (sweet buffalo), Yoko Ono (teriyaki), Bob Marley (Jamaican jerk) and Jimmy Buffet (tropical rum), among others. I went with my favorite at Gilliganz, the Grateful Garlic Parmesan, while Brian and Kylene ordered the Creepers (sweet heat). I've eaten a lot of wings over
24
the years and I've found that garlic parmesan is a flavor that a lot of places struggle with getting right. Why? I don't know, but I've had them with way too much or not enough garlic, not enough parmesan and just bland in general. That's definitely not the case at Gilliganz. They are cooked to perfection, blanketed with parmesan and a perfect level of garlic. The wings are big and the chicken is extremely tender. I've had them several time and they are consistently good. As for the Creepers, they were excellent too, but there wasn't really any heat. Brian, Kylene and I all came to the same conclusion that they were just sweet. Maybe they should have been called creepy wings though, because they are

green in color, which was a little weird. But the wings were just the starter for us on our visit. When it was time to move onto the main courses we delved even further into the mammoth five-page menu. I ordered The Dog off of the pizza portion of the menu. It is unique and awesome. I selected the 12-inch option and it's comprised of, grilled chicken, tomatoes, onions and mozzarella cheese on a thin crust. It may not sound that unique, but it's the sauce that takes this pleasurable pie over the top. The Dog is topped with a sweet buffalo sauce, a mix of barbecue sauce and buffalo sauce which is absolutely unbelievable in taste. It's sweet and tangy and livens the palate with its rich blast of flavor.
December 24, 2015
The Dog has soared toward the top of the list of my favorite pizzas. It's what you look for when you visit a restaurant, something you crave when you're not there. Gilliganz has created a pizza that makes people itching to return and I applaud them. My buddy Woody, the fourth person in our party, didn't even order any food, but when he pilfered a piece of my pizza his eyes lit up. I thought I was going to have to slap his hand away, as he swiped a few more slices. He was immediately a fan. Kylene went with the turkey, bacon, ranch melt off of the sandwich portion of the menu and was very pleased with it. Brian ordered the grilled cheese, cheeseburger, constructed with a
half-pound steak burger between two grilled cheese sandwiches. When it arrived it was smaller than we al anticipated, but Brian raved about its delectable taste. And with everyone satisfied on our visit, that was just the tip of the iceberg of what Gilliganz offers. There is a wing portion of the menu, appetizers, chips and dips, wraps, salads, sandwiches, dinner entrees, pastas, black angus steak burgers, baskets and horseshoes, pizzas, toasted subs and a plethora of sides. It would take many meals to sample this entire gigantic menu. The cream corn nuggets, breaded dill pickles, colossal clams and chicken cordon blue bites are some of the biggest standouts on the appetizer menu. Some other items that jumped out at me were: buffalo chicken dip, pulled pork cheddar nachos, the cusabi and salmon wrap, the shrimp and crab salad, the hot bacon spinach salad, shrimp kabobs on wild rice, sweet potato fries, hush puppies, tater tots, the jammin' salmon burger, the Greek pizza, the sweet thai pizza, the Italian Stallion toasted sub, the Boss Hog toasted sub and the jive turkey toasted sub. That's just a small sample size of the wide variety of options at Gilliganz. As for the ambiance, it offers a large and open dining area near the long bar in one room, and then on the other side you find even more tables and booths. It's just a classic bar and grill atmosphere. Gilliganz offers live music and karaoke on certain nights, so head out for drinks and fun also. Gilliganz has been a staple in Holiday Shores for a long time and though maybe a little off the beaten path, it's a great place to go with a great variety of choices when you gotta eat.
