Making every bride’s dreams come true By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge
I
f you are planning a wedding, whether you are the bride, the groom or a friend or family member who is expected to assist in the planning procedures, there is going to be a one-stop location to help you.
The Villa Marie Bridal Fair will take place on Saturday, Jan. 15, and Sunday, Jan. 16, noon to 5 p.m. each day. This is the first annual bridal event to be hosted by Villa Marie, but is already shaping up to be the source for information for brides and grooms. With dozens of vendors already signed up, this will be one of the premiere resources for those who are not sure where to begin the planning efforts. Just a few of the vendors expected
Villa Marie Winery to host bridal fair will be A-1 Rental, The Mane Attraction, Ambassador Travel and Patty Cakes. Villa Marie Winery opened in Maryville a little over two years ago. The winery has had tremendous success and has already become “the” place to book your wedding events. Whether you are looking for a venue to host an engagement party, a shower, a bachelor-bachelorette party, the wedding itself or the reception, Villa Marie can do it all. Many couples have already had their wedding events hosted by Villa Marie, from beginning to end. The winery books weddings on Fridays and Saturdays. Every Saturday in 2011 is already booked and Fridays are filling up quickly. They have already booked a few dates for 2012. They do
host both indoor and outdoor weddings. Villa Marie can do it all for you, taking the burden from your shoulders. They provide the linens, the bar service, catering service, wait staff, dance floor, a beautiful setting and more. Except for a few details, like the cake and flowers, it is nearly an “all-inclusive” venue. The food at Villa Marie is amazing and they offer a number of dining selections for your special event. Where some locations charge the bride and groom for a “tasting” of the menu items available for selection, Villa Marie provides this service for free. Couples will be pleasantly surprised when they see the pricing options offered by Villa Marie. They are very reasonable and very affordable. Each of the vendors that is planning
to attend the Villa Marie Bridal Fair work well with Villa Marie Winery, but will assist you with your event wherever you have it planned. If you are a vendor who is interested in participating in the Villa Marie Bridal Fair, there are still a few spots left. Reservations must be made by Wednesday, Jan. 5. You may call 3453100. If you are planning a wedding and have any questions about the event or Villa Marie Winery, you can call 3453100 or visit www.thevillamariewinery. com. Villa Marie Winery is located in Maryville, at 6633, East Main St. They have a beautiful scenic lake and gazebo in their back yard and a gorgeous view over the vineyards. Stop in any time to take a look at the facilities or make your plans now to attend the Villa Marie Bridal Fair on Friday, Jan. 15 and Saturday, Jan. 16.

Alton ready for eagle watchers It’s time to hop in the car and follow Mother Nature’s Highway to Alton this winter for an eagle watching adventure. Every January, experts anticipate nearly 1,000 American Bald Eagles will migrate to the region, many reclaiming their winter nests along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway from Alton to Grafton and Pere Marquette State Park. With the help of the Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau’s 2 0 11 E a g l e Wa t c h e r ’ s G u i d e , visitors can plan their own eagle watching adventure and take part in numerous eagle watching events and tours happening throughout the region. New this year, the recently opened Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower will offer visitors new eagle viewing opportunities. Eagle watching has been an attraction for the last decade all around Alton, and every year new attractions and events enrich the experience for visitors wishing to catch a glimpse of these magnificent birds. In May 2010, the new Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower opened in Hartford, Il., offering panoramic views of the confluence of the Missouri & Mississippi rivers from platforms at 50, 100 and 150 feet. These same viewing platforms will yield a new perspective for visitors wishing to see eagles in flight. In addition, the Tower will feature an “Eagles Over the Confluence” event every Saturday & Sunday from January 8, 2011 through February 20, 2011, with featured activities each week including artisans, kid’s crafts, photography workshops and more. For more details, go to www. ConfluenceTower.com. Back again this year, visitors can take part in a little Eagle Caching as they head out to visit the various “Eagle Watching Hot Spots” featured in the 2011 Eagle Watcher’s Guide. Within the guide, information can be found about the caches and clues on where to find them. Like geocaching, each cache has a set of coordinates that are plugged into the GPS navigator and used by the explorer to search for the treasure. All the information needed, including the clues, coordinates and GPS rentals, can be found at www. VisitAlton.com/EagleCaching, or by visiting the Alton Visitor’s Center at 200 Piasa St. in Downtown Alton.
Visitors can head out to view the eagles on their own or take part in some of the traditional eagle watching events in the region, including eagle meet & greets, eagle watching tours and live bird demonstrations. Events take place nearly every weekend and throughout the week, from January through March. Plus, most of the events in the region are free of charge. A full list of events can be found online at www.VisitAlton.com and in the Eagle Watcher’s Guide. For visitors wishing to make eagle watching a winter getaway, there are numerous eagle packages and specials available at hotels and bed & breakfast inns in Alton, Grafton and Elsah. Alton, Illinois is the #1 destination for eagle watching in the St. Louis region. It is the place to be for the best eagle events and the largest concentration of American Bald Eagles in the state of Illinois. Every day is a great day to plan on making your escape this winter to see the eagles in Alton. For the latest eagle watching updates or to receive your free Eagle Watchers Guide, call 1800-ALTON-IL or go to www. VisitAlton.com.

People People planner Botanical Garden looks toward 2011 The Missouri Botanical Garden is celebrating the United Nations (U.N.) International Year of Forests in 2011 with a TREEmendous! year of activities highlighting the real value of trees and the critical role they play in our lives. Experience an exhibition of non-traditional tree houses, take part in a communitywide tree hunt, celebrate National Arbor Day with a weekend treethemed festival and more. Visit www.mobot.org/treemendous for more information. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s 79 acres are home to more than 5,300 trees, representing over 580 tree species. Some are noteworthy for their size – the Missouri-native western soapberry (Sapindus drummondii), possumhaw (Ilex decidua) and white basswood (Tilia heterophylla) trees at the Garden all hold records as Missouri State Champion Trees, and the white basswood is listed on the American Forests® National Register of Big Trees. Some are noteworthy for their history – a handful of bald cypress trees (Taxodium distichum) and Osage orange trees (Maclura pomifera) date back to the lifetime of Garden founder Henry Shaw, and an unusual golden larch (Pseudolarix amabilis) traces its roots back to the 1904 World’s Fair. Still others are noteworthy for their characteristics, such as the huge Scotch elm (Ulmus glabra) near Tower Grove House, with its gnarled trunk and branches so large and heavy that they need support wires, or the towering “living fossil” dawn redwood trees (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). Regardless of their individual distinctions, all trees have one core commonality: they are vital to human life on Earth. “Trees play an incredibly valuable role in our lives,” said Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “Not only do they provide the basis for some of the most important ecosystems on Earth, but they also provide so many of the resources we need for life. They transform the sun’s energy into carbohydrates; they absorb and store carbon dioxide, helping to combat climate change and give us the oxygen we need to breathe. They provide us with timber, food, fibers, medicines, shelter and a multitude of other goods essential for life. During a year when the U.N. is raising awareness about the critical importance of conservation and sustainable development of forests, it is appropriate that the Missouri Botanical Garden also highlights the importance of trees and forests and the threats they face, as well as pays homage to the many wonderful trees conserved in our own backyard.” Explore the significance of trees and their part in a healthy planet while enjoying the creativity and

talent of the local community. From Saturday, Apr. 30 through Sunday, Aug. 21, the TREEmendous! Look for each tree house displayed near or beneath the canopy of some of the Missouri Botanical Garden’s significant trees, including oak, tulip, elm, sweet gum, ginkgo, sycamore, Osage orange and walnut trees. Each structure on public display is the winner of a juried design competition open to local designers, architects, schools, studios and individuals. T h e E x t r e m e Tr e e H o u s e s exhibition kicks off with the TREEmendous! Forest Festival, Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 30 and May 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 pm. both days. Religion Religion briefs Kentucky gives initial OK to tax breaks for Noah’s Ark
Shia Muslims nabbed in Malaysia may be charged for deviating from Islam
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A group of investors looking to build a replica of Noah’s Ark as part of a proposed $172 million theme park cleared its first bureaucratic hurdle. T h e K e n t u c k y To u r i s m Development Finance Authority granted preliminary approval Monday for state tax incentives f o r t h e p ro j e c t . A n e c o n o m i c analysis must be done before being considered for final approval. Mike Zovath, co-founder of the Answers in Genesis ministry that opened the Creation Museum in Kentucky three years ago, said investors are looking to build a full-scale replica of the ark in what would be an expansive theme park that could draw some 1.6 million visitors a year. Investors, attracted by Kentucky’s tourism tax incentives, are considering an 800-acre site near Williamstown, just off Interstate 75. Gov. Steve Beshear, who gave the proposal in a Capitol news conference earlier this month, has said he favors tax incentives for the ark park that is projected to create about 900 permanent jobs and have a $214 million economic impact in its first year of operation. Detractors object to the state providing tax incentives for a project with a religious theme. The theme park would include an ancient walled city, a petting zoo, live animal shows featuring giraffes and elephants and a replica of the biblical Tower of Babel.
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — More than 200 Muslim Shiites detained in one of the biggest Malaysian sweeps targeting outlawed Muslim sects may be charged with breaching Islamic law. Government authorities in Muslim-majority Malaysia consider only the Sunni denomination legal. Sunni Islam is the world’s largest branch of the religion, followed by Shia Islam. Islamic officials raided a shop house in the Gombak district in central Selangor state last week and arrested the group, said Nurhamizah Othman, a public relations officer at the Selangor Islamic Religious Department. Among those detained were Iranians, Indonesians and Pakistanis. It was the largest sweep of outlawed groups in recent months, the department director, Muhammad Khusrin Munawi, told state media. He said the Shia doctrine is a threat to national security because it permits the killing of Muslims from other sects who are regarded as infidels. Nurhamizah confirmed the comments. Malaysia, a Southeast Asian country of 28 million people, is wary of religious sects, fearful that they may alter the nation’s image as moderate. Malay Muslims make up about 60 percent of the population, while most of the rest are Buddhists, Hindus or Christians from the ethnic Chinese and Indian communities. The arrests of the Shia followers have been slammed by some religious scholars.

“Malaysia is trying to become a country a la Taliban that only allows one school of thought,” said prominent Muslim scholar Asri Zainul Abidin. “Even though I personally don’t agree with Shia teachings and even frequently criticize and debate with them, I cannot accept the approach of the allegedly democratic Malaysian government in denying the people’s right to practice their faith,” he said. Nurhamizah said the detainees have all been released on bail, except two Iranians. Most are likely to be charged in an Islamic court with following the teachings of a deviationist movement, which carries a penalty of up to two years in jail, she said.

Church leaders asking parishioners to sign petitions against state sales tax increase on food OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Utah churchgoers are being asked to sign petitions opposing increases in the state’s sales tax on food. Members of the Utah Coalition of Religious Communities are pushing for signatures when attendance at many churches is particularly high because of the holidays. The coalition is a multifaith response to poverty. State Sen. Stuart Adams, R-Layton,
presented a bill to increase the sales tax during an interim session of the Legislature. The coalition fears Adams or other lawmakers will present similar bills in 2011. Sales tax on food in Utah is 3 percent. Adams’ rationale for an increase was stabilization of the tax base, especially when sales of high-priced items such as cars and furniture fluctuate dramatically.
Snohomish County fining Bothell church over flagpole permit B O T H E L L , Wa s h . ( A P ) — Snohomish County code enforcement officers have a problem with a 90-foot flagpole at a Bothell church. The county is threatening the Park Ridge Community Church with a $1,500 fine if it doesn’t get a permit. The 90-foot tall wooden pole was erected about 10 years ago as a temporary cell phone tower. The pastor, Brad Sebranke, says when the phone company no longer needed the pole the church asked that it be left as a flag pole. The church put a cross on top and has a lighted star on top in the Christmas season. The church is appealing the fine. A county hearing examiner is scheduled to consider the case Jan. 4.

allow the building for fruit storage under Michigan’s right-to-farm law. The Society of St. John sued in federal court in 2009, claiming the township had violated its rights as a religious group. The township says the monks have operated the Jampot under an exception to the local zoning ordinance. Officials in 2008 had turned down an expansion and questioned whether the property was only for religious purposes. The agreement filed last week also clarifies what rights the monks have on their property. The monks are affiliated with the Ukrainian Catholic Church.

"Spamalot" returns to The Fox By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge
T
he comedy of Monty Python has been popular for the last 35 years. People still watch the movies over and over to this day. The comedic sketches are timeless and still some of the funniest routines ever. A Broadway production was created to combine much of the comedy of Monty Python with a number of musical numbers for the live stage. “Spamalot,” the 2005 winner of three Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director (Mike Nichols), as well as the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards for Best Musical. Back in St. Louis for the second time, “Spamalot” has proven to be one of the most popular productions that the Fabulous Fox has presented. For a limited five-show engagement on Jan. 7 through Jan. 9, 2011, tickets for Monty Python’s “Spamalot” are on sale now and start at $25. Lovingly “ripped-off” from the internationally famous comedy team’s most popular motion picture, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” Monty Python’s “Spamalot” is a culmination of some of the greatest comedic performances to come to the live stage.
The original cast recording of Monty Python’s “Spamalot” won the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Based on the Tony Award winning direction of Mike Nichols and the riotous choreography of Casey Nicholaw, Monty Python’s “Spamalot” features a book by Eric Idle, based on the screenplay of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” by Monty Python creators Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, with music and lyrics by the Grammy Award-winning team of Mr. Idle and John Du Prez. Telling the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and their quest for the Holy Grail, Monty Python’s “Spamalot” features a chorus line of dancing divas and knights, flatulent Frenchmen, killer rabbits and one legless knight. Monty Python’s Spamalot is produced by Stephen B. Kane, Michael McFadden and Phoenix Entertainment. Mike Nichols has been acclaimed as one of the great American directors in film, theater
and television. He has won the Academy Award and eight Tony Awards. He recently received the Directors’ Guild of America Award for Lifetime Achievement as well as a DGA Award for the direction of the HBO adaptation of “Angels in America.” Casey Nicholaw’s outstanding work on Monty Python’s “Spamalot” earned him nominations for the Tony Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award. He followed up Monty Python’s “Spamalot” with another smash hit Broadway musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” for which he earned numerous nominations as director and choreographer. Aside from his work with Monty Python in films and on TV, Eric Idle has written a West End play, “Pass the Butler;” three novels, including “The Road to Mars, “The Rutles - A Mockumentary;” and many songs too rude to mention. He has sung opera, acted in movies, appeared on television and crossed America performing comedy on The Greedy Bastard Tour. His diary of his 15,000 mile journey by bus was recently published by Harper
Collins, and his long awaited sequel “The Rutles2: Can’t Buy Me Lunch” was released by Warner Video in March. There’s no saying what he might do next... John Du Prez has composed over 20 feature film scores including “A Fish Called Wanda,” “A Private Function,” “The Meaning of Life,” “Personal Services,“ “UHF” and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I, II and III. He has worked with Eric Idle since 1978. Monty Python isn’t a person, but a group of British actors and writers (and one American) that performed their famous comedy show “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” on the BBC from 1969 to 1974, with subsequent international fame and success. Monty Python’s “Spamalot” will play the Fabulous Fox Theatre Jan. 7 through Jan. 9, 2011. Performances are Friday at 8 p.m.; Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $25 to $63 and are subject to change. Please visit www. f a b u l o u s f o x . c o m f o r c u r re n t p r i c i n g information. Tickets are on sale now and available at the Fox Theatre box office, all MetroTix outlets, online at www.metrotix. com or call 314-534-1111. Group orders of 15 or more should call 314-535-2900. Menzel has a diverse career on the stage, in films and in music. Idina is a powerhouse of talent, who constantly amazes audiences with her strong, emotional performances. Menzel recently joined the cast of Glee, the Fox juggernaut about a varied group of high school kids who come together to sing as the underdog of glee clubs. Menzel plays the coach of rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline, McKinley High Glee Club’s main competition. Last year, Menzel concluded a national tour promoting her album, I Stand. A skillful songwriter, Idina writes and performs her own music. She released the Glen Ballard produced album for her record label, Warner Bros. Records, and played to sold out houses around the United States. Menzel performed her show in New York as part of the Mastercard Soundstage series, which aired on PBS. PBS also aired the concert version of Chess: The Musical, recorded at the Royal Albert Hall where Idina shared the stage with Josh Groban. In film, Idina appeared opposite Susan Sarandon, Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams in Disney’s hit, Enchanted, directed by Kevin Lima. Prior to that, Idina was seen in director Chris Columbus’ film version of the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical Rent, in which she reprised her role as Maureen. This was on the heels of her co-starring role in Robert Towne’s Ask the Dust, opposite Salma Hayek and Colin Farrell. In television, Idina recently completed an arc on the Grey’s Anatomy hit spin-off, Private Practice on ABC. In September 2006 Idina p re m i e re d t h e B ro a d w a y h i t Wicked in the West End in London to rave reviews and received the Theatregoers Choice Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She starred in Michael John LaChiusa’s musical See What I Wanna See directed by Ted Sperling at the Public Theater. This role garnered Menzel a Drama Desk Award nomination as well as a Drama League Award nomination. Menzel completed her Tony Awardwinning performance, for Lead Actress in a Musical, in Wicked in December 2005. Helmed by Tony Award-winning director Joe Mantello, Wicked played to packed audiences at the Gershwin Theatre since it opened in October 2003. Additionally, Menzel was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her role as the misunderstood green girl. Idina received a Tony nomination for her Broadway debut performance a s M a u re e n , i n t h e o r i g i n a l production of the Pulitzer Prizewinning hit Rent. She also earned a Drama Desk nomination for her performance as Kate in Manhattan Theater Club’s Off- Broadway original musical The Wild Party. She appeared as Sheila in the Encores! production of Hair and starred as Amneris in Broadway’s Aida. Her other Off-Broadway credits include
the pre-Broadway, original, buzzcreating production of Rent and The Vagina Monologues.

Tickets are on sale now at the S c o t t r a d e C e n t e r B o x O ff i c e , Livenation.com or Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000. Trans-Siberian Orchestra, one of the top selling concert acts in the world creates one of the most captivating concert experiences on the road today. Insistent on giving their fans the most “value for their dollar,” TSO puts on an overthe-top audio/visual spectacular complete with lasers, pyrotechnics and state of the art lighting with a ticket price that starts as low as $25 allowing generations of fans to be enthralled year after year. TSO founder, producer and writer Paul O’Neill explains, “When someone goes to a TSO concert, we don’t want them to walk away saying ‘that was a great show’ or ‘that was worth it’ or even ‘that was the best show I’ve seen in a long time.’ We want them to say, ‘Man, that the best show ever; we just ripped that band off.’” With sales in excess of 7 million - including nearly 2 million CDs and DVDs sold in the past two years -Trans-Siberian Orchestra is among the most popular groups
of the modern era. The Orchestra debuted in 1996 with the timeless “Christmas Eve and Other Stories.” Highlighted by the remarkable hit single, “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24,” the album has since achieved 2x platinum certification from the RIAA, with sales now rapidly approaching 3 million. Two further albums completed O’Neill’s planned Christmas Trilogy; 1998’s “The Christmas Attic” and 2004’s “The Lost Christmas Eve,” both of which are currently approaching 2x platinum certification. All three of the Orchestra’s Christmas-themed albums have proven enduring blockbusters, returning annually to the top 10 on Billboard’s “Top C a t a l o g A l b u m s ” a n d “ To p Holiday Albums” charts. TSO’s 2009 Winter Tour played to over 1.2 million fans in 80+ cities, and generating revenues of nearly $45 million, which according to Billboard magazine’s midyear touring chart, put them as the #2 most attended tour. Since its first Winter Tour in 1999, TSO has been one of the concert business’s most successful acts, consistently rating in the Top 10 for both gross revenues and audience attendance. In the spring of 2010, TSO debuted the much-anticipated live rock opera “Beethoven’s Last Night,” TSO’s gold-certified rock opera fantasy about “what could have happened” on Beethoven’s final night of life. The successful tour provided the template for their innovative brand of “Rock Theater” and the much-anticipated World Tour in 2011.

“The Fighter”
Mark Wahlberg produces and stars, David O. Russell directs, but supporting player Christian Bale owns this real-life tale about boxer Micky Ward, who rose from his blue-collar roots and overcame ugly family squabbles to earn a title shot in his mid-30s. Bales dominates the action, much as Heath Ledger’s Joker took over “The Dark Knight” from its hero, Bale’s Batman. The film itself is a strange stew, a raw, genuine portrait of working-class stiffs one moment, a shrill-borderingon-caricatured comedy of family discord and vulgar people the next. Wahlberg as Ward, Melissa Leo as his mother and Amy Adams as his girlfriend are excellent. Yet Bale is truly extraordinary as Ward’s older half-brother, Dicky Eklund, a flamboyant but self-destructive former boxer who trains his sibling to climb to heights he never reached himself as his life unraveled amid crack addiction. Gaunt, wiry, always moving, always talking, Bale casts aside the stoicism of so many of his roles and becomes a lovable wreck. As with Ledger’s Joker, it’s the stuff that Academy Awards wins are made of. RATED: R for language throughout, drug content, some violence and sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 116 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“How Do You Know”
How do you know when a film is horrible? Here, it’s pretty obvious. Nothing about this would-be romantic comedy ever gels — neither the romance nor the comedy and, worst of all, not the characters. Individually likable ordinarily, Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd make zero sense together here as a couple. Similarly, the dueling story lines that comprise the script feel slammed together, so the film as a whole never finds a groove — which only accentuates the fact that it’s overlong. Most shockingly of all, “How Do You Know” comes from someone who should know better: writer-director James L. Brooks, who’s repeatedly proven himself more than capable of finding just the right tone or the perfectly poignant turn of phrase in films like “Broadcast News,” “As Good As It Gets” and his multiple Oscar-winner “Terms of Endearment.” Here, everything feels off, as if the lightness required of the genre eluded him. Witherspoon stars as a professional softball player who’s just been cut from the U.S. team. She’s torn between Rudd, who plays a corporate executive under federal investigation for financial crimes he didn’t commit, and Wilson as an endearingly cocky pitcher for the Washington Nationals (a bit of casting that isn’t believable for one second).
December 30, 2010
Meanwhile, Jack Nicholson goes to waste in a handful of scenes as Rudd’s father and boss. RATED: PG-13 for sexual content and some language. RUNNING TIME: 116 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.
“Rabbit Hole”
This is suffocatingly sad, as you can imagine any film would be that deals with the death of a young child. The challenge is to find a way to get people to want to see it, and then want to sit through it, without being filled with abject dread — or at least the feeling that they’re slogging through eat-yourvegetables cinema. John Cameron Mitchell accomplishes that with graceful performances from his stars, Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart, which are filled with subtle moments as well as recognizable human frailties and flaws. (Kidman does some of her best work in a while here.) Everyone deals with grief differently. There is no right answer, especially when it comes to coping with the unthinkable loss of a 4-year-old son. “Rabbit Hole” gets that notion and conveys it vividly, yet also offers some welcome glimmers of humor and even hope. David Lindsay-Abaire adapted the screenplay from his own Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Mitchell, who previously directed the subversive and sexually daring “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and “Shortbus,” would seem an unusual choice for such traditionally dramatic material. While Mitchell has expanded the scenery a bit, you still can never shake the sensation that you’re watching a play on film. RATED: PG-13 for mature thematic material, some drug use and language. RUNNING TIME: 92 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING Three stars out of four.
“Tron: Legacy”
Hugely high-tech and forward-thinking in its day, “Tron” now looks cheesy and quaint in retrospect, with its blocky graphics and simplistic blips and bleeps. The original film from 1982 was all about the possibility of technology and the human imagination, and the adventures that could result from marrying the two, but only now are the computergenerated effects available to render this digital world in its fullest potential. Hence, we have a sequel, which is in 3-D (of course) but is actually best viewed in IMAX 3-D. The whole point of the story and the aesthetics are that they’re meant to convey an immersive experience. We’re supposed to feel just as trapped inside this challenging and
dangerous electronic realm as the film’s characters. And at over two hours, we are indeed trapped — there is no justifiable reason for such a lengthy running time. While director Joseph Kosinski’s feature film debut is thrilling and cool-looking for about the first half, its races, games and visuals eventually grow repetitive, which only draws attention to how flimsy and preposterous the script is from Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. “Tron: Legacy” is a mishmash of pop culture references and movie rip-offs, Eastern philosophy and various religions, and one insanely cute, strategically placed Boston terrier. And with the return of Jeff Bridges, there’s plenty of Dude-ishness for you fans of “The Big Lebowski.” RATED: PG for sequences of sci-fi action violence and brief mild language. In 3-D and IMAX 3-D. RUNNINT TIME: 125 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING Two and a half stars out of four.
“Yogi Bear”
I n s p i re d b y A r t C a r n e y ’ s E d N o r t o n f ro m “ T h e Honeymooners” and originally voiced by Daws Butler, Yogi Bear has always had an intelligence that surpasses that of your typical clawed mammalia. He has finally gotten his own movie — in 3-D, no less — and so it comes with little surprise but still some disappointment that “Yogi Bear” is a bland pic-a-nic, indeed. There he is, in trademark green tie and white collar and voiced by Dan Aykroyd, with the bow-tied Boo Boo (Justin Timberlake) at his side. Of course, this being the highly advanced 21st century, simple animation won’t do, so we must suffer through the mediocre, lifeless computergenerated animation of this treasured twosome. They’re in an otherwise live-action film with Tom Cavanagh (“Ed”) as Park Ranger Smith and Anna Farris as Rachel Johnson, a documentary filmmaker visiting Jellystone Park, most likely trying to beat Ken Burns to the punch. A fight ensues to save Jellystone from greedy politicians (Andrew Daly and Nate Corddry) and the whole ordeal is over in little more than an hour and a quarter. Directed by effects veteran Eric Brevig, it’s blessedly brief, and Aykroyd and Timberlake supply good voice work. But Yogi deserves better jokes and more wildness in which to roam free. Can’t a bear get some lunch around here? RATED: PG for some mild rude humor. RUNNING TIME: 80 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

Movies Coens part ways with Wayne in “True Grit” By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — If there were a Hollywood Remakes 101 college class, “True Grit” directors Joel and Ethan Coen no doubt would be in violation of a basic lesson: Never remake a film people know and love. John Wayne’s 1969 Western “True Grit” was one of his choice latecareer roles, earning him a best-actor Academy Award for a character so memorable that the 1975 sequel “Rooster Cogburn” was crafted to pair him with Katharine Hepburn so he could ride again as the boozy, one-eyed lawman. But of course, the Coens were n e v e r t h i n k i n g re m a k e w i t h their “True Grit,” which opens Wednesday. They had not seen Wayne’s “True Grit” since they were kids. Their idea was to bring to the screen a faithful version of the novel on which it was based. Charles Portis’ “True Grit” reads like a novelization of a Coen brothers’ film. Macabre humor and bursts of savage violence, often at the same moment. Deadpan dialogue spoken with poetic rhythms, delivered with a highfalutin’ grandiosity that sets the world apart from any other. Oddball characters who have never met a movie cliche they couldn’t sidestep to do something utterly unexpected. “I reread the book a few years back to my kid out loud and thought it would be fun to do as a movie,” Joel Coen said in an interview alongside his brother. Paramount Pictures owned the rights, but “they weren’t jumping all up and down about it ... because I think studios are cautious about ‘Westerns,’ in quotations marks.” “In their minds it’s a Western.

In this image released by Paramount Pictures, Hailee Steinfeld, left, and Barry Pepper are shown in a scene from, “True Grit.” In our minds, less so,” said Ethan Coen. “It’s an interesting novel, not a Western, per se. But yeah, to them it’s a Western, and that’s just kind of poison now. They know it doesn’t do well overseas.” Even if international audiences are not keen for stories of America’s Old West, studios are eager to be in business with the Coens these days, after their offbeat sensibilities went mainstream with 2007’s “No Country for Old Men.” That film won them the best-
picture, directing and adapted screenplay Oscars and became their biggest commercial success. They followed with another solid earner in 2008’s “Burn After Reading” and a best-picture nominee last year with “A Serious Man.” So Paramount gave them the goahead to not only take on a genre that has fallen out of favor, but also to re-create a character so closely identified with Wayne. “I’m not even sure if John Wayne is more of an icon to us and less and
less of an icon as the demographic gets younger and toward people who actually go to the movies now,” said Ethan Coen, 53. “That’s really true,” said Joel Coen, 56. “There are people I mention the movie to who are not that much younger than we are, the next generation, and they go, ‘Yeah, I’m aware of that vaguely. That title sounds familiar. I have no idea what it is. What is it?”’ The Coens’ veteran cast was familiar with Wayne’s “True Grit”
but not Portis’ novel, a first-person adventure told by 14-year-old Mattie Ross, an Arkansas girl who hires U.S. Marshal Cogburn to track down her father’s killer and bring him to justice. Jeff Bridges, who starred in the Coens’ “The Big Lebowski,” plays Cogburn, while Matt Damon costars as Rooster and Mattie’s trail companion LaBoeuf, a pompous dandy of a Texas Ranger who was played in Wayne’s version by Glen Campbell.
Two treats for the holidays By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge The concept of a “double feature” may be one that is absent in modern movie-going which makes it even more special, I guess, that I treated myself to a triple feature Monday night. With a generous supply of (oh, so hammy) Yogi Bear sandwiched between two slices of Black Swan and Little Fockers, I found myself overstuffed with too much of a good thing. But that’s what the holidays are all about, right? Enjoying the things that are good, but not necessarily good for you, like egg nog and (at least at my house) snickerdoodles. During its current limited run, Darren Aronofsky’s film, Black Swan, has been tearing it up, box office-wise. Natalie Portman portrays a talented ballerina named Nina Sayers who becomes so increasingly obsessed with her part of The Swan Queen in her company’s staging of Swan Lake, that it reduces her to a mess of neuroses, paranoia, delusion, and nearly-literal transformation into her character. The role is juicy and well-rounded, but especially as it plays against type for the doe-eyed Portman. She is at her best when faced with the prospect of losing her starring role to a smoldering, conniving

understudy (Mila Kunis). Vincent Cassel plays their director, a lout with seduction on his mind. Be careful with Black Swan. Dangerous supporting parts by Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder aside, it’s a movie that was kind of a drag for a little more than its first hour. Be careful because the last twenty-five minutes are brilliant and bring the whole thing into perspective. Such was my experience, but one I’ve also learned to be quite common among other viewers. It’s quite a work of art and I fully expect to see several Oscar nominations in its near future. Black Swan runs 120 minutes and is rated R for strong sexual content, disturbing violent images, language, and some drug use. I give this film three and a half stars out of four. ••• Was there room in our lives for more storylines from the Focker-Byrnes family? Turns out there was a gap to be filled that I didn’t know was there. It’s nice to see some memorable characters again as Little Fockers, the franchise’s third story, hits screens six years after Meet the Fockers delighted audiences in 2004. It’s set during the week leading up to the fifth birthday of Greg (Ben Stiller) and Pam (Teri Polo) Focker ’s twins, Samantha (Daisy Tahan, the tough one) and Henry (Colin Baoicchi,
the sweet one). Nurse Focker has moved up in the world and is now a lead administrator in a hospital. He’s still a question mark in the eyes of “Grandpa” Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro), his ex-CIA father-inlaw, who now has no time for questions. After the divorce of his older daughter and a minor heart attack, Grandpa Jack feels the need to cement his legacy and the patriarchal leadership of his family by ensuring Greg as “The Godfocker”. Such a test occurs during a visit, turning in a comedy of errors and situations that will delight audiences this holiday season. Owen Wilson, Barbra Streisand, and Dustin Hoffman return in cheeky supporting roles and Laura Dern and Harvey Keitel cameo. Jessica Alba costars as a rep for a Viagra-like medication that lends itself to several amazing and icky scenes with Stiller and De Niro (and possibly the funniest line of the year by Polo, but you’ll have to see the movie for that one). This is really a family comedy about two guys that don’t easily accept each other for who or what they are, but I’m pretty sure we can all relate to this one. Little Fockers runs 105 minutes and is rated PG-13 for mature sexual humor throughout, language, and some drug content. I give this film three stars out of four.

Movies "The Tourist" a mindlessly enjoyable trip By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press It’s probably best to head into “The Tourist” with the mindset that you’re going on an actual vacation yourself. If you’re in the mood for mindless, escapist fun — dazzling scenery, elegant evenings, decadent hotel suites and expensive clothes — you’ll be fine. There are all the obligatory chases and shootouts you’d expect in a romantic action caper, but you never get the sense that anyone’s in real danger. There are twists, but they won’t make you think too terribly hard, and in the end you will have devoted fewer than two hours of your life to a decent diversion. Watching Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie bounce off each other isn’t torture. Pretty people went to Venice and made a pretty movie. Joining them won’t be thoroughly satisfying, but it won’t kill you, either. It’s probably also best not to let the esteemed pedigree of the people behind the movie trick you into expecting something way more substantive or meaningful than you’re going to get. “The Tourist” is the first Hollywood film from director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, whose debut, the excellent German film “The Lives of Others,” won the foreign-language Oscar in 2007. It comes from a script that’s credited to Henckel von Donnersmarck, Christopher McQuarrie (“The Usual Suspects”) and Julian Fellowes (“Gosford Park”). Cinematographer John Seale (“The English Patient”) provides the scenic vistas and intimate views of the exquisite Jolie. Costume designer Colleen Atwood (“Chicago”) dressed the gorgeous superstar.
Associated Press
In this film publicity image released by Sony Pictures, Johnny Depp, right, and Angelina Jolie are shown in Columbia Pictures’ “The Tourist.” These acclaimed talents — Oscar winners, all — have given us something unabashedly light, frothy and ridiculous — almost knowingly preposterous. But still, fun, so if you feel like shutting your brain off for a little when there’s so much heady awards bait out there, this isn’t a horrible way to go. Jolie stars as Elise Clifton Ward, an elegant and mysterious Englishwoman (which allows her to dust off that impeccable British accent she did for the “Tomb Raider” movies). Elise is the lover of the elusive Alexander Pearce, who’s the target of Scotland Yard for having stolen billions from a gangster. (Paul Bettany gets some dry laughs as the head of the investigative team.)

When we first see Elise, she’s being trailed by authorities to a cafe in Paris, where she receives a note from Pearce instructing her to take a morning train to Venice. While on board, she’s to pick out a man of similar height and build to serve as her companion and confuse her followers. She chooses Depp’s Frank Tupelo, a mild-mannered math teacher from Wisconsin — and after all his recently hilarious flamboyant roles, it’s a welcome change of pace to see Depp in an understated mode,
to see him a little schlubby and self-deprecating. Once they arrive in Venice, Elise and Frank find themselves being hunted not just by the police but by the angry gangster (Steven Berkoff), who wants his money back, along with his band of hapless thugs. Everyone assumes Frank is Pearce — and even if he’s not, he’s still in trouble (and the score from James Newton Howard tends to play up the madcap hilarity, and the would-be romance, a bit too intrusively). Along those lines, do Jolie and Depp, two of the biggest stars on the planet, have any chemistry with each other? Here and there. They’re actually more interesting as individuals, which isn’t exactly helpful, given that “The Tourist” is meant to be a romance. But Jolie provides the sultry action, and Depp offers some sweet, goofy laughs, and in the end no one got sunburned or suffered from food poisoning.

The Arts
For The Edge
This piece of work by Ann Hamilton will be part of the exhibit, "Overpaper," which will be featured at the Bruno David Gallery.
When the tool becomes the art By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The Bruno David Gallery, located at 3721 Washington Blvd., in St. Louis, has announced its newest exhibit “Overpaper.” This show features artists: Carmon Colangelo, William Conger, Alex Couwenberg, Jill Downen, Yvette Drury Dubinsky, Beverly Fishman, Joan Hall, Ann Hamilton, Kelley Johnson, Chris Kahler, Matthew Penkala, Judy Pfaff, Paul Henry Ramirez and Buzz Spector. This exhibit consists of a selection of works on, or of, paper. Paper has long been the starting point for conceptions by artists, who worked out their ideas on paper before moving them to other mediums. Now the idea on paper often becomes the art, and this exhibition surveys artists using paper both as the template for creative thinking and as a material base for new artistic forms. In the Front Room of the gallery, works by Leslie Lackey are on display. “Portraits of Artists and Friends,” is a small mixed media work on paper and is part of a series Laskey started in 2008. Lackey is a Professor Emeritus of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis. In the Media Room, the gallery presents “The Empire Trilogy,” a video by New York-based artist Heather Bennett with music by Joe Raglani. With a nod to Worhol’s, 1964 opus, “Empire,” this trilogy of videos resists any typical temporal, action-based narrative, and yet simultaneously suggests it. This is just a sampling of the fantastic exhibit now on display and will remain until Saturday, Jan. 15. The hours are Wednesday through

The Arts Artistic adventures Kemper to host Brazilian artist The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University will highlight Brazilian artist Rivane Neuenschwander with “A Day Like Any Other” from Oct. 8 to Jan. 10. Brazilian conceptual artist Rivane Neuenschwander creates playful, ephemeral and often participatory artworks that blur distinctions between author and viewer, object and memory, permanence and temporality. This fall, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will present Rivane Neuenschwander: A Day Like Any Other, the artist’s first major midcareer survey. Covering a decade of work, the exhibition reveals a wide-ranging interdisciplinary practice that
merges painting, photography, film, sculpture, installation and collaborative action. Like her predecessors Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica, Neuenschwander is at once artistic instigator, commissioning agent and social organizer, exploring themes such as nature, language, time and the poetry of the quotidian. The exhibition will highlight three works that invite direct audience participation: Walking in Circles (2000), First Love (2005) a n d J o e Carioca and Friends (2005). Walking in Circles consists of several circles of varying size rendered in transparent adhesive on the gallery floor. The circles darken over time as they pick up dirt from visitors’ shoes, creating a physical map of movement through
the exhibition space. In First Love, participants are asked to describe their “first love” to a forensic sketch artist; the resulting portraits will be displayed in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition. For Joe Carioca and Friends, Neuenschwander painted over several pages of a popular
Brazilian comic, leaving visible only the speech bubbles and vibrant background colors. Each panel is then transferred to the wall as a large blackboard on which people are invited to draw their own stories. Further highlights include a pair of large-scale environmental

OH, CANADA Show highlighting our northern neighbor returns to St. Charles By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge
W
hile the wind is blowing in these frigid temperatures and the ice and snow are making it tough to get out, now is a great time to sit down with your family and start planning your next vacation. While you are putting on your vacation “thinking cap,” consider Canada. Especially if you are vacationing in the summer time, Canada’s cool breezes and lush beauty makes it a fantastic destination. This year, The All-Canada Show is returning again to St. Louis. The show is running from Friday, Jan. 7, through Sunday, Jan. 9, at The St. Charles Convention Center. If you have not yet been to the St. Charles Convention Center, this would be a great opportunity to experience it. There is always free parking, it is just off Interstate 70 and the traffic is at a minimum compared to other show venues. This marks the 28th year that this annual event has featured free seminars, free maps, travel guides and much more. This year will be no exception. If you are interested in traveling to Canada, this is the show for you. There will be a wide variety of travel destinations represented, including canoe outfitters, drive-in resorts, remote fly-in outposts, five-star fly-in lodges and hunting outfitters. The show staff and featured speaker Norm “The Great” McCreight will use their combined 50 years of fishing and hunting expertise to bring a number of great seminars to the show’s main stage. Anglers and
hunters will hear informative presentations that offer insight into selecting the perfect destination, including choosing the right lodge plan, what you need to know about crossing the border, plus tips on saving money and wilderness safety. The shows media manager, Joel Prunty, explains about some of the misconceptions about Canadian travel expense: “There are some misconceptions out there about trips to Canada, the biggest being that it is expensive. Our show does host some of the finest lodges and resorts anywhere in the world, but there are also many housekeeping lodges and camps offering fabulous fishing for $500 per person for a week and everything in between.” “If you like Canada, there’s plenty to keep you occupied at the show,” said Prunty. “Although the primary purpose of the show is to select the perfect destination for your adventure, we also offer a variety of information, attractions and entertainment to aid in the process and create a real Canadian atmosphere.” Other features at the show include “Hanson Buck” presented by Cabela’s, The World Record Whitetail exhibit. This life-sized exhibit brings you face-to-face with the magnificent buck shot by Milo Hanson of
Biggar, Saskatchewan, in 1993. The “Hanson Buck” will certainly capture your attention. Norm “The Great” McCreight is an icon of the AllCanada Show and will talk hunting and fishing in his beloved Canada at his daily seminars and may even throw in a few hockey comments. Anthony J. Travel Travel briefs Hawaii hotel occupancy rates continue to rise HONOLULU (AP) — Hotel occupancy rates throughout Hawaii continued to rise compared with a year ago, while average room rates declined slightly, according to a report released Tuesday by Hospitality Advisors LLC. The monthly analysis found that statewide hotel occupancy averaged almost 70.9 percent in October, an increase of 4.5 percentage points over the same month last year. The average daily room rate across the state was $163.52, representing a 0.7 percent decrease from October 2009. Waikiki hotels posted the highest occupancy rate in the isles in October 2010 — 80 percent — but their average daily room rate was $148.59, about $2 lower than a year ago. “Waikiki hotels enjoyed an unusually strong month during what typically is the start of the offseason,” said Joseph Toy, president and CEO of Hospitality Advisors. The occupancy rate for all Oahu hotels was 78.2 percent in October, and the average room rate was $148.21, a 1.2 percent decline from last year. Big Island hotels experienced the lowest occupancy rates in the state in October, at 57.6 percent. That was a 2.3 percentage point increase from October 2009, due in part to an 18 percent jump in visitors from the western United States, the report stated. The Big Island’s average room rate also rose 5.8 percent, to $171.65. Maui’s occupancy rate in October increased the most of any island, up 11 percentage points to 67.1 percent. As with the Big Island, Maui benefited from a big increase in airline capacity from the mainland, Hospitality Advisors’ study found. The average daily room rate on Maui was the highest in the state, at $194.24. However, that is still lower than last year. The occupancy rate on Kauai was 61.2 percent in October, a slight rise from a year ago. But the average room rate there slipped 5 percent, to $172.07. “Although Oahu and Maui continue to show significant improvement each month, the recovery will remain uneven until the Big Island and Kauai begin to show more strength and consistency in their respective markets,” Toy said.
Airline wars: The battle for overhead bins NEW YORK (AP) — It’s probably the most precious thing on planes
December 30, 2010
this holiday season: space in the overhead bin. Planes are stuffed with travelers, bag fees have driven more luggage into the overheads and Christmas gifts will soon be part of the mix. Some travelers pay extra to get on the plane first and avoid competing with other passengers for bin space. But you don’t have to shell out more money just to ensure your bag will fit. The trick is knowing where to sit and when to board. Here’s a review of airline boarding policies and ways to keep your bag — and your sanity. Boarding basics Most airlines board the back of the plane first and work up to the front, several rows at a time. Elite frequent fliers, passengers with disabilities or families needing extra time to board usually get to board ahead of the crowd. The rest have to line up and wait their turn. In this scenario, it pays to book a seat at the back of the plane. There are a few airlines that do it differently. Delta, for instance, books passengers into as many as nine zones. First-class passengers get on first with those in the first row of coach. Then elite frequent fliers get on, followed by elite fliers on Delta’s partner airlines, like AirFrance or KLM. Zones 4 through 9 are based on seat assignment where, again, those in the back are boarded first. United has yet another take on boarding. After elites and families with small children, the airline boards window seats first (Zone 2), middle seats next (Zone 3), and aisle seats last (Zone 4). The idea is to prevent passengers from clogging the aisles as they board. And if you want to sit with someone? It’s OK to board with whoever has the window seat, says Matt Daimler of SeatGuru.com. United’s gate agents won’t stop you from boarding a bit early if you’re traveling with a partner in a different zone. Just pick a window seat, to make sure you get on early. AirTran uses a back-and-forth system to board. Business class passengers board first, followed by the last five rows of the plane. Then,
the first five rows of coach board and the boarding process flips between groups in the back and front until the entire plane is loaded. So it won’t pay to sit in the middle of the plane if you’re worried about overhead bin space. You’re better off close to the back or front of the plane. Keep in mind, though, that AirTran has a range of seat selection fees, from $6 to $20. US Airways boards coach passengers based on when they checked in. Economy passengers who check in online board before those who check in at the airport. The key to getting on a US Airways flight early is getting checking in online a full 24 hours before take-off. When flying Southwest, a quick trigger finger is even more important since the airline doesn’t assign seats. For a chance at getting into the first boarding group on the airline without paying the $10 priority boarding fee, you’ll have to check in online as close to 24 hours out as possible. Another option Airlines are often willing to let you check bags at the gate, for free, especially on smaller planes that get stuffed quickly. It benefits them because fewer bags stuffed in the cabin means planes get off the ground faster. If you’re flying on a small plane, it’s pretty easy to do: just grab a gate check tag from the counter staff, slap it on your bag and hand it off before you get on the plane. Larger planes have bigger overhead bins, of course, so free gate checking may not be available. On flights where this isn’t offered, though, it never hurts to ask. Gate-checking your bag gives you the benefit of checking a bag without the schlep to baggage claim. Your bag is handed to you as you get off the plane. Just be sure your bag is sturdy — one made with hard plastic or tough panels that won’t tear easily. Some other steps to take: tuck your coat in your bag before it’s time to board — you’ll save yourself the time of finding overhead space for it. Stuff small gifts in your bag, too, to
prevent them from getting damaged. They’ll take up a less space slipped in between your sweaters than flying unprotected in the overhead bin.
Half Dome permitting requirement expanded YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — Permits soon will be required to scale Half Dome in Yosemite National Park on all days, not just weekends and holidays. The National Park Service on Monday announced it was expanding the permitting requirement first implemented earlier this year. Park officials say they found a spike in the number of people scaling the granite monolith from Monday through Thursday after the weekend and holiday permit requirement was put in place earlier in 2010. So they now also want to control the number of climbers on all weekdays. The goal is to limit overcrowding on the trail that officials say has contributed to injuries and at least one fatality in recent years. The Fresno Bee reports that permits will be available starting March 1 for climbs in May and June. A $1.50 processing fee will be charged for each one.
Continental lets customers pay to lock in fare DALLAS (AP) — Continental Airlines says it will let passengers hold a reservation and lock in a quoted ticket price for up to a week
— for fees that vary widely. The service, called FareLock, gives travelers three days or a week to decide whether to buy a ticket and avoid a fare increase or the risk that a preferred flight or fare will sell out. Continental said Monday it would charge a fee of at least $5 to hold a reservation for three days and at least $9 to hold it for a week. The amount will vary depending on the length of the hold, the trip and how soon the passenger planned to travel. On roundtrip itineraries in January between Houston and San Francisco and between Newark, N.J., and London, the Continental website quoted fees of $19 each to hold reservations seven days. To lock in a fare for a group of three passengers traveling in January from San Francisco to Newark, the fee was $44. Continental didn’t say for which routes it would offer the service, except that the list includes both domestic and international flights. Continental said it will still give customers 24 hours to change or cancel a reservation for a full refund. But it will continue to charge to change a ticket after that period. This new type of fee could reduce the amount airlines raise in change fees. Airlines added an array of new fees in 2008. The U.S. Department of Transportation said Monday that U.S. airlines raised more than $4.3 billion in the first nine months of this year by imposing fees for checking bags and changing ticket reservations. Last week, US Airways President Scott Kirby said that fees would account for all of his company’s profit for 2010. The most lucrative fees have been for checking baggage — $590.4 million in the third quarter — and for changing reservations.

Beautiful and warm-hearted Jewelry designer offers unique creations By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge
T
he days of businesses being started and run by all men are no longer the norm. Women are rising up and not only running businesses, but creating and running their own businesses. Whether women began on this journey as a result of more and more single mothers needing a full-time income that is enough to support a household, or a stayat-home mom finding ways to help contribute to her household budget, the fact is women are taking their ideas and turning them into successful businesses. Hillary Barbour is the owner of Belle et Bonne, which is French for the phrase “beautiful and warm-hearted.” Belle et Bonne is the home to Barbour ’s jewelry designs, where each piece is handconstructed of quality materials, including semi-precious stones, freshwater pearls, crystals and precious metals. Before Barbour turned her passion into a business, she
spent 14 years in the field of conservation, working for the World Wildlife Fund and The Nature Conservancy. She decided to “rekindle” her creative passion for jewelry design, but combined her love of designing the pieces with her love of conservation by donating portions of her proceeds to conservation organizations. Her signature lines of jewelry are called Romance, Shapes and Rococo. Barbour feels that strength and beauty embody not only the collection names, but are also reflected in each piece she creates. Her jewelry designs include necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings and her specialties “C’est Nouveau.” The necklace line includes several pieces that vary from the eclectic to the retro in design. The Amethyst Hues Circle Necklace is a versatile piece, made with real amethyst in several shades and are accented with rainbow moonstone briolettes. . It measures at 36 inches and can be doubled up. The Christina Necklace consists of a white pearl, chalcedony,
labrodorite joined with handcrafted sterling silver circles. It measures 36 inches and the clasp allows doubling. This piece will dress up any outfit. If you love the layered look, the Aqua Multilayer Necklace is the piece you will love. It is created with aqua blue freshwater pearls on a multilayer sterling silver textured chain, along with three levels of silver circles of different sizes. This necklace also comes in white, lavender and pink. The bracelet collection spans the delicate to the bold. The Champagne Triple Strand Bracelet consists of lustrous champagne freshwater coin pearls joined with rock crystal rondelles on 14kt gold fill. This is an elegant piece for day or night. The absolute right accent for the
“hip” look is the Peace Sign Cuff Bracelet. This stunning bracelet is handcrafted with 100 percent recycled sterling silver and Swarovski crystals. All of the earrings are beautifully made and would be the right accent with many of her necklace designs, or even just by themselves. Her ring selection is small, but very unique. You can see her entire collection, including purchasing information, at her Web site: www.bellebonne.com. All purchases come in an organza jewelry bag that is great for storing your purchase, as it keeps them from tarnishing. Since all orders are hand-made, it does take about two weeks for creation. Allow two to three weeks for delivery. Although Barbour prides herself on her designs, she will consider custom changes whenever possible. you can email your request for changes to bellebonne@gmail.com, and you will receive a reply if your request can be accommodated. Book explores Jackie’s other life NEW YORK (AP) — When most of us think of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, we think back to the perfectly coifed first lady of the early ‘60s in a stylish shift, a string of pearls, a pill box hat. Or the Jackie O of the next decade, the rich widow in huge sunglasses that shielded her from the world. We probably don’t think of a middle-aged working woman making her own photocopies, waiting on line to speak to the boss, or sitting cross-legged on the floor, arranging photos and puffing on cigarettes. Yet this was Jackie’s third act — the Jackie who joined the work force in her mid-40s and spent nearly two decades as a book editor. By all accounts, it was one of the most satisfying periods of her life. “She didn’t do this just to have a job,” says Bruce Tracy, a former colleague at the Doubleday publishing house. “She loved this. This is what she was passionate about.” Suddenly, in a span of just a month, two new books are examining this little-known part of Jackie’s life, giving readers a new slant on a woman who has fascinated Americans like no other in our history. “People think about Jackie’s clothes, about her marriages, maybe her redecorating the White House,” says historian William Kuhn, author of “Reading Jackie: Her Autobiography in Books,” released this month. “But her editorial career was longer than her two marriages combined. It says more about who she was as a person, because this is something she actually chose to do.”
Of course, she didn’t need the work. Kuhn notes how women of Jackie’s generation were taught to be great wives and great mothers, making it all the more striking that she would choose to learn a new career so relatively late in life. “It speaks to a kind of quiet feminism that she and other women of her generation had,” he says. Jackie was 46 when she was hired by Thomas Guinzburg at Viking Press, not long after the 1975 death of Aristotle Onassis. Clearly Viking wanted her for her name. And her early efforts — she spent only two years there, before moving to Doubleday — were a learning process. But her productivity skyrocketed as the years went on. “Yes, some of this was handed to Jackie,” says Kuhn, whose book is being published by Doubleday itself. “But the fact is, she amassed a list of books that publishing professionals are in awe of today.” That list includes books on everything from art to European and American history to photography to fashion to religion. It includes children’s books by Carly Simon, and Michael Jackson’s autobiography, “Moonwalk.” She worked on a trilogy by the Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz, several books by Bill Moyers, and a series of Tiffany style books. And then there was her well-documented love of dance, particularly ballet, which led to the best-seller “Dancing on My Grave,” by ballerina Gelsey Kirkland and her husband, author Greg Lawrence. Working with her on the book, an account of Kirkland’s descent into
drug addiction, was “a humbling experience,” says Lawrence, who next month comes out with “Jackie as Editor: The Literary Life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis” (Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Press.) Lawrence recalls how at an introductory lunch with the couple, Jackie burst into tears at their story, saying, “I want to do this book!” “Jackie fought for us,” says Lawrence. “That’s what I really admired about her. She had to fight for her books. And when we ran out of money, she would call us and say, ‘I got you more, just don’t tell anyone.”’ Later, she persuaded the couple that the book should be 300 pages rather than the 600 they were writing. “That voice, it would just completely disarm you,” he says. There were perks to being Jackie O — she worked only part-time in her office and spent a lot of time working at her Park Avenue apartment, where she would sit in her library with authors surrounded by her books, smoking out of a long, ivory cigarette holder, Kuhn says — not to mention taking the summer on Martha’s Vineyard. But it was striking to many how quickly she shed the trappings of celebrity, munching on sandwiches at her desk, waiting nervously in corridors for face time with the boss, always coming to the reception area to meet her visitors and making her own calls. “She never said ‘Get me so-and-so on the phone,”’ says Tracy, the former Doubleday colleague, now a freelance editor, who assisted her on a number of books.
Mike D’Orso found that out the hard way. Then a newspaper reporter for The VirginianPilot, his phone rang one day and the caller said: “Hello, it’s Jacqueline Onassis.” “Yeah, right,” he laughed, and hung up. “Luckily, Jackie called back,” D’Orso said in a telephone interview from his home in Norfolk, Va. “And that’s how my career as an author got started. I owe it all to her.” She edited two of his books, including his 1988 “Somerset Homecoming,” the story of a black woman who helped save the plantation where her ancestors had been slaves. D’Orso says Jackie didn’t even mind when his 7-year-old daughter answered the phone one day, then passed it to him, shouting, “Daddy, it’s the dead president’s wife!” “She just laughed it off,” says D’Orso. He was going through a divorce at the time, and he says the two often had conversations about it. Despite their long collaboration, though, the working relationship stayed on the phone: They never met in person. Though a friendly editor, Jackie could be a demanding one, says Kuhn, who relates exchanges she had with Stewart Udall, a former secretary of the interior under JFK. Udall was writing a book on Spanish exploration in the southwest. In a series of letters, Jackie tussled with him tooth and nail on certain points of Spanish history, not backing down. Jackie surely would have loved to continue editing books for decades more, but it was not to be.
Confident women choose men’s formalwear NEW YORK (AP) — Holiday parties are the best excuse going to wear frilly clothes, but after a while they can seem a little fussy. The wardrobe antidote is a sleek, modern, fitted tuxedo. The man-tailored suit — usually a jacket with lapel and trousers with a tonal-fabric stripe down the leg — can be sophisticated and super-sexy. Just look at Angelina Jolie, who wears them regularly on the red carpet. It’s what you wear underneath, from the top down to the attitude, that makes a difference. “It’s what gives the woman a little tailored naughtiness,” says Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa. “It’s very sleek. It’s for that kind of woman who really likes to have that spirit — easy in pants, structured shoulders. It says something about her: She’s a little different than everyone else.” The woman in the tuxedo suit always stands out, Costa says, but not in the way of the woman in a red dress, or something low-cut or sheer. “The idea of equality is bold and represents a freedom. ... I think it’s provocative but it also has power to it.” Marlene Dietrich separated herself from the red-carpet pack back in the 1920s and ’30s with a smoldering signature suit look, and then Yves Saint Laurent reintroduced it to the runway crowd in the ’60s with his
December 30, 2010
“Le Smoking” suit. The tuxedo in some form or another — sometimes even with a skirt — then became a staple of Saint Laurent’s collections throughout the decades, says Colleen Hill, assistant curator of The Museum at FIT in New York. “YSL was an influential proponent of women in trousers, in general,” she explains. “He was the first to make the tuxedo and tuxedo pants a high-fashion, acceptable style. He was often quoted as saying women look as good in pants as in a dress.” One of Saint Laurent’s suits, worn and owned by the late model Tina Chow, is included in the new FIT exhibit “His & Hers.” Hill says its appeal is a “hint of scandalousness.” A menswear-inspired silhouette has the wink effect of a boyfriend shirt or blazer, says designer Jill Stuart. They’re not overtly sexual but they ooze an inner sensuality, she adds. For her upcoming spring collection, Stuart offered a white tux, with the flattering, elongating satin stripe, that had a cropped pant leg. She says that little bit of leg is a teaser (high heels are a must), and she’ll either wear a lingeriestyle camisole or a crisp white shirt underneath “depending where I’m going.” Costa suggests pairing the suit with a bustier or T-shirt.
B e rg d o r f G o o d m a n f a s h i o n director Linda Fargo recently wore red lipstick and a long strand of pearls with a Phillip Lim ivory cutaway tux jacket with matching tux shorts to a black tie luncheon — “and felt great in it,” she says. “I would advise finding a way to ‘make-it your own’ and feminize it, so as not to look literally masculine,” Fargo says. She expects to see more women in tuxedos next year since many designers were influenced by a Saint Laurent retrospective. A longer jacket with slim trousers is the most modern proportion,
according to Stuart. Chow’s tuxedo from the early ’80s, however, had a high-waist pant and a cropped jacket. “ I d o n ’ t k n o w i f t h e re ’ s a particular style of tuxedo that’s been the most popular over time, but a lot seems to depend on body type and fit,” says Hill. “I think a lot of women prefer a tux that’s been fitted for a woman’s body instead of a real men’s tuxedo.” Women have been adapting menswear to suit their style for centuries, adds FIT colleague Jennifer Farley, noting dresses from the late 19th century that had a
bodice that mimicked jacket lapels. Then came everything from Oxford shoes to the button-down blouse. “I think in a lot of ways that menswear tailoring is part of womenswear now,” Farley says. It rarely works the other way, although the breaking of rules — such as a tailored jacket with jeans — really got its boost from fashionforward women, she says. Calvin Klein’s Costa is loose with his definition of a tuxedo, saying it’s a hard look to define because fabric, color and fit can vary, but you do know it when you see it.

Dining Delights
The incredible, edible egg Perfect for any meal By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Eggs are an incredible food source. They have received a bad wrap in the past, as it was reported that the yolk was a large source of cholesterol. It has since been found that the benefits outweigh the negative effects and eggs are a wonderful source of protein. According to the American Egg Board, there are many reasons to include eggs in your menu – breakfast, lunch and dinner. Here are just some of the reasons they give: Versatility Eggs work wonders as everything from garnishes to side dishes, from appetizers to entrées. Nutrition Eggs are a good source of protein and riboflavin and an excellent source of choline. Low Food Cost Eggs are really economical when compared with other sources of protein. If you’re a commercial operator, eggs can be a new source of profits. Or, if you’re a noncommercial operator, they can be a way to cut costs. Egg Safety Since there have been some recent issues with health problems from eggs, here are some safety tips according to the Center for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration. Eggs should be cooked until the whites are set (completely coagulated and firm) and the yolks begin to thicken (no longer runny, but not hard). Scrambled eggs and omelets should be cooked until firm throughout with no visible
liquid egg remaining. For egg-containing dishes (like sauces, casseroles, etc.), cook until an internal temperature of 160°F or above has been reached. In addition to thoroughly cooking eggs, follow these food handling practices: • Wash hands with soap and warm water • Refrigerate at 45°F or below (do not freeze) • Avoid pooling and combining eggs • Use clean, sanitized utensils and equipment • Take out eggs only for immediate use • Never stack egg flats near grill or stove • Never leave egg dishes at room temperature more than one hour (including preparation and service time). Here are some egg recipes that you can use for any meal: Bacon and Cheese Fritta Prep Time: 10 Minutes Cook Time: 25 Minutes Servings: 6 Ingredients: 6 eggs 1 cup milk 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/4 cup chopped green onions 5 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese Directions: In a bowl, beat eggs, milk, butter, salt and pepper. Pour into a greased 11-in. x 7-in. x 2-in. baking dish. Sprinkle with onions, bacon and cheese. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes or until a knife inserted near the
center comes out clean. Tomato and Basil Quiche Prep Time: 20 Minutes Cook Time: 40 Minutes Servings: 6 Ingredients: 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, sliced 2 tomatoes, peeled and sliced 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons dried basil 3 eggs, beaten 1/2 cup milk salt and pepper to taste 1 (9 inch) unbaked deep dish pie crust 1 1/2 cups shredded Colby-Monterey Jack cheese, divided Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Sprinkle tomato slices with flour and basil, then saute 1 minute on each side. In a small bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. season with salt and pepper. Spread 1 cup shredded cheese in the bottom of pie crust. Layer onions over cheese, and top with tomatoes. Cover with egg mixture. sprinkle top with remaining 1/2 cup shredded cheese.
