Winter Warm-Up Cardinal fans get opportunity to rub elbows with the players By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The weather outside may be frightful, but on Jan 16, 17, and 18, it is sure to be delightful inside the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch when the St. Louis Cardinals will host the 14th Annual Winter Warm-Up. As with past years, the proceeds from the event will benefit Cardinals Care, the team’s community foundation supporting kids. Cardinals Care has distributed more than $14 million to area organizations since its inception in 1997. Part of the proceeds benefit Redbird Rookies, a youth baseball development league for kids who otherwise may not have the opportunity to play. Cardinals Care builds ballparks and provides all of the equipment and off-field support to ensure that participants reach their goals. The Winter Warm-Up is the largest of

several fund-raising efforts that supply grants to agencies in the St. Louis area that help kids in health, education, mentoring, and the arts. The schedule for the Winter Warm-Up is Saturday, Jan. 16, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 17, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday, Jan. 18, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission passes are currently on sale and cost $40 for fans age 16 and over, $10 for kids age 5 to 15, and free for kids under age 5. All members of the military, police and fire departments with an active ID will receive one free adult pass, which must be obtained in person at the Busch Stadium Official Cardinals Team Store. You can purchase tickets in person at the Busch Stadium Official Cardinals Team store, open everyday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; at the Cardinals Clubhouse Stores located at Union Station, The Galleria, St. Louis Mills, St. Clair Square, South County Mall and Mid Rivers
Mall; or by phone at 314-345-9000 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week. Tickets purchased by Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010 will be mailed, after that date, tickets must be picked up at “Will Call” on the day of the event. The three-day event features activities for all ages including autograph sessions with a number of the Cardinals players. Many players’ autographs are free with your 2010 Winter Warm-Up admission pass, while others will require an autograph ticket available through a specific additional donation. All autograph tickets will be sold online beginning Saturday, Jan 9, through Wednesday, Jan 13. Any autograph tickets that do not sell out online will be available for sale at the Winter Warm-Up. Check the Cardinals Web site for purchasing information at www. stlcardinals.com. Most players will sign items including but not limited to baseballs, photos, posters, bats, gloves, jerseys, seat backs, hats, helmets, and bases. Some players’ autographs are restricted to baseballs and photos only. Autographs are limited to one item per person, per player. Posed photos with the players are prohibited, due to time restrictions and courtesy for the other fans wanting autographs. There will be a full list of the Cardinals players who will be signing autographs at the Warm-Up and their individual terms and conditions at a later date. Again, check www.stlcardinals.com the end of December for the list. This year the event is hosted at a new
location, the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch, which is located at 315 Chestnut Street, on the riverfront. The hotel is the former Adam’s Mark Hotel. Collectors should bring their checkbooks and make sure to check out the two silent auctions that are offered daily, each day of the Winter Warm-Up. There will also be two live auctions each day. If you plan to bid on items, be prepared to pay for the items and you can take them home the day of the sale. Each item will come with a donation acknowledgment from Cardinals Care and a Certificate of Authenticity. Outside food and beverage items are not allowed, but there will be a number of food and drink items available for purchase. Fans can bring either still or video cameras to use during the event, as long as they do not interfere with any of the events or cause issue with other fans, players or staff. However, photos or video cannot be reproduced except with permission from the Cardinals. So come out with the family, have some great fun with some of the interactive games, meet some Hall-of-Famers, get your photo with Fredbird or shop the many booths offering memorabilia and trading cards. There will be live presentations by Tony LaRussa and live interviews with a number of the players on the main stage. More information, autograph times and ticket information can be found at www. stlcardinals.com or call 314-345-9000.

People People planner Dinosaurs to invade Botanical Garden The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis is marking the golden anniversary of one of its most popular attractions, the Climatron®, by transporting visitors back in time to the golden age of dinosaurs. Feel the thrill of encountering a hulking Placerias, bird-like Bambiraptor or soaring Sordes in an unparalleled environment: hidden in the heart of a thriving tropical rain forest. Witness dozens of these realistic, prehistoric creatures when “DinoQuest: A Tropical Trek Through Time” debuts at the Missouri Botanical Garden in 2010. Since 1960, the Climatron has easily been one of the most recognizable features at the Garden, noted as the first geodesic dome to be used as a plant conservatory. Inside, lush green foliage, cascading waterfalls and a warm, humid climate simulate an authentic jungle atmosphere. “This exhibition provides a perfect introduction to the history of life on earth, extinction, and survival. How we manage our resources will have a major effect on the future of
life, and there are many lessons to be learned from the past,” said Dr. Peter Raven, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “In addition to the educational value, there is also a real sense of excitement in experiencing these lifelike creatures in such an awe-inspiring setting. We hope it will evoke wonder, imagination and intrigue in visitors of all ages.” On the “trek through time,” visitors of all ages will experience life in a tropical forest long ago, today and tomorrow. A smooth pathway winds through the 24,000square-foot Climatron conservatory, where more than a dozen installations depict dinosaurs and reptiles from the Cretaceous, Jurassic, Triassic and Permian periods “frozen in time” amid the living flora. Encounter hungry herbivores, including a pair of toothy Heterodontosaurus and an eight-foot-long,bulky-bodied Placerias. Spot a flock of bird-like Bambiraptors hovering beneath green cycads, keeping watch over nests brimming with eggs. Identify a large Dimetrodon by the finned “sail” along its spine, or the three-foot-long Rhamphorynchus by its fur-covered wings. Postosuchus, a pre-dinosaur age predator of Placerias, hides
atop a cliff near a bamboo grove, while a hungry Syntarsus lurks beneath a large tree. See the Compsognathus tend to their nests near the basin of a waterfall as a trio of vigilant Oviraptors keep watch over their nests of offspring near a shallow pool. Look up to find three hairy Sordes, ready to take flight from their perches in the trees. Two Quetzalcoatlus babies, also flying reptiles, huddle in their nest above a tank of fish, while their 30-foot-long parent flies high inside the neighboring Shoenberg Temperate House, a conservatory adjacent to the Climatron. “DinoQuest: A Tropical Trek Through Time” is on display Saturday, May 1 through Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Purchase tickets on site or in advance beginning Spring 2010 at www.mobot.org/tickets.asp. Exhibition admission (which includes entry to the Climatron dome, Shoenberg Temperate House and Brookings Interpretive Center) is $5 for adults (ages 13 and over) and $3 for children (ages three to 12), in addition to Garden admission. Exhibition admission is free to St. Louis City and County residents on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m.

Music “CHICAGO” Yes, the guy from “The Dukes of Hazzard” IS in it By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Start the car, I know a whoopee spot, where the gin is cold, but the piano’s hot, it’s just a noisy hall, where there’s a nightly brawl and all that JAZZ!! That spot is the Fabulous Fox from Friday, Jan 1 through Sunday, Jan. 3, when “Chicago” will be jazzing up the St. Louis stage. Tom Wopat, (maybe best known as Luke Duke from the ‘80s series “Dukes of Hazzard, along with
a number of guest starring roles in a number of series), will star in the role of Billy Flynn, alongside Bianca Marroquin as Roxie Hart, Brenda Braxton as Velma Kelly and Carol Woods as Matron "Mama" Morton. Straight from Broadway, a story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery, treachery, all set admist the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, makes for one of the most popular musicals ever. “Chicago” is the story of Roxie
For The Edge
Two scenes from “Chicago” Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines. With some of the most famous song and dance routines, “Chicago” will pull out all the stops. Songs like “All That Jazz,” “Funny Honey,” “When You’re Good to Mama,” “Me and My Baby,” “Razzle Dazzle,” will all be performed as Bob Fosse
designed them to be. The winner of six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording. The national tour is directed by Scott Faris and choreographed by Gary Chryst. “Chicago” has become a worldwide phenomenon with productions in 24 countries and 11 languages since 1996. The recordb re a k i n g L o n d o n p ro d u c t i o n continues to hold the record as the longest-running American musical in West End history. “Chicago” will play the Fabulous

Music Tuning in Gospel Festival celebrates 20th anniversary This year marks the 20th anniversary of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Gospel Festival. It will be held Monday, Jan. 18 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Westbrook Auditorium of Presser Hall (1210 Park St., Bloomington). The event, free and open to the public, honors the birth of civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. This year ’s celebration will include performances by the United Community Gospel Singers Mass Choir, Gayles Memorial Mass Choir (Aurora, IL) Fantastic Jones Family (Springfield, Ill.), Union Baptist Church Adult Choir, Integrity Singers (Peoria, Ill.), Illinois Wesleyan Chapel Gospel Choir, Illinois State Interdenominational Youth Choir, Mt. Pisgah Sunbeam Choir, Loving Missionary Baptist Choir, JAM Production Choir, Boys and Girls Club Choir, Crosswinds Praise Dance Team, The Hour of Deliverance Youth Choir, the City of Refuge Adult Choir, Mt Pisgah Praise Dancers, and Mt. Pisgah Adult Choir. Bloomington Mayor Steve Stockton and Illinois Wesleyan President Richard F. Wilson will bring welcome to the festival. Former Bloomington Mayor Jesse Smart and others will offer remembrances of the first festival. Started in 1991 by Corine Sims as a joint effort with Illinois Wesleyan University and the United Community Gospel Singers, the Gospel Festival found a fitting home at Illinois Wesleyan, where King spoke twice, once in 1961 before his famous March on Washington speech, and again in 1966, after he had become the youngest man to win a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts of non-violent protest in the Civil Rights Movement. Barbara Sims Malone, daughter of Corine Sims and the Rev. James E. Sims, said she remembered how her mother explained the idea of the festival. “She was so excited as she sat there and told us her plan to honor Dr. King, Jr. in a gospel festival of song and dance,” said Malone. For additional information on the Gospel Festival, contact Carl Teichman at 309-556-3429 or cteich@ iwu.edu.

“Invictus”
Clint Eastwood’s latest is a sports film less about what’s on the playing field than what’s happening in the stands. It’s the story of South Africa’s sea change under Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) told through the unlikely prism of sport. It comes off like a case study in leadership, perhaps a bit clinical and limited, but still deeply revealing. When Mandela takes office in 1994, he embraces the rugby national team, the Springboks, and seeks to turn a symbol of apartheid into a beacon of hope. It feels like destiny fulfilled hearing Freeman — who has long sought to play the role — speak Mandela’s halting, humble speech. No one could be better. “Invictus” is dripping with inspiration, and Eastwood’s extraordinary late period remains a good place to find it. With a blond, beefed-up Matt Damon as the rugby team’s captain and one truly terrible song from a South African boy band. RATED: PG-13 for brief strong language. RUNNING TIME: 132 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Avatar”
James Cameron’s 3-D epic has all the smack of a Film Not To Miss — a movie whose effects are clearly revolutionary, a spectacle that millions will find adventure in. But it nevertheless feels unsatisfying and somehow lacks the pulse of a truly alive film. The plot is a little like the American frontier circa the 1800s, only transposed to the year 2154 on the faraway moon Pandora, the home of Native American-like, aqua blue, 10-foot tall creatures called the Na’vi. Arriving are imperialistic humans to plunder, and scientists to study. Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) leads a team that explores in Na’vi bodies, avatars, controlled remotely. A sense of discovery — of Cameron’s digital world of Pandora, of the impressive techno-filmmaking — makes “Avatar” ofte n t h r i l l i n g . T h e e n v i ro n m e n t a l i s t a n d anti-war messages resonate with contemporary troubles, but they also seem odd coming from such a swaggering behemoth of a movie. One senses Cameron’s zest lies in the battle, not in peace. With Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana.

RATED: PG-13 for intense epic battle sequences and warfare, sensuality, language and some smoking. RUNNING TIME: 161 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and half stars out of four.
“Crazy Heart”
In some not too far-fetched parallel universe, Jeff Bridges really might be living the life of a boozy country singer. Bridges seems like the real thing in this musical portrait, rasping out songs in the comfortable remnants of a whiskey-and-tobacco-seared voice that you might swear you’ve heard on a hundred jukeboxes in a hundred anonymous roadhouses. Bridges plays the aptly named Bad Blake, a country-music veteran performing in dive bars and bowling alleys as he continues to drink and smoke himself toward an early grave. Accustomed to one-night stands, Bad falls for a single mom and smalltown journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who interviews him. Robert Duvall co-stars as Bad’s buddy and Colin Farrell plays his old protege, now a superstar hankering for Bad to write him some new songs. Bridges may not have a great singing voice, but it’s a soulful one, and he matches it with one of the finest performances of his career, just playing the hell out of this guy whose self-abuse has carried him to a precipice where he either leaps into the pit or turns back and cleans up. RATED: R for language and brief sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Nine”
On a scale of 1 to 10, this musical update of Federico Fellini’s masterpiece “8 1/2” comes in somewhere around a 5, maybe 5 1/2. Despite stars with enough Academy Awards hardware to start their own metal works, Rob Marshall’s adaptation of the stage musical ends up as an amiable but muddled music-video rehash of Fellini’s study of a filmmaker adrift in personal and creative turmoil. The crises of a pampered, fawned-over filmmaker
(Daniel Day-Lewis) come off as trifling as he meanders from real life to grand fantasy sequences with co-stars Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren, Judi Dench and Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie. The musical interludes are overly stagy and not well integrated into the story. It feels as though the actresses lined up single-file waiting for their big number, each woman getting a chance to croon a little something about the meaning of their man’s life before wandering off into the background of the film. PG-13 for sexual content and smoking. RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“The Young Victoria”
The first Queen Elizabeth has been the It Girl of the British monarchy for years in Hollywood. Queen Victoria now gets royal treatment with this fresh film biography starring Emily Blunt as the empire’s longest-reigning ruler in her early years. It’s good, old-fashioned period drama — not terribly lively, not terribly insightful, but rich in pageantry and fine moments of drama, with a beguiling performance from Blunt. The scene-stealer of “The Devil Wears Prada” proves just as engaging as queen bee of the corset crowd, bringing endearing zest, impetuousness and imprudence to this woman who eventually would grow into a symbol of sober, imperious widowhood for much of her time on the throne. With a supporting cast that includes Jim Broadbent, Miranda Richardson and Paul Bettany, director Jean-Marc Vallee presents a charming picture of affection and devotion between Victoria and the love of her life, Prince Albert (Rupert Friend). RATED: PG for some mild sensuality, a scene of violence, and brief incidental language and smoking. RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

News isn’t good “About the Morgans” By GLENN WHIPP Associated Press Did you hear about the Morgans? If so, you might wish you hadn’t. This bland fish-out-of-water comedy is unremarkable in every aspect, unless you’re one of them thar city slickers who thinks the idea that Sarah Jessica Parker trading in her Jimmy Choos for a pair of cowboy boots amounts to an act of cultural treason. “ D i d Yo u H e a r A b o u t t h e Morgans” comes from writerdirector Marc Lawrence, creator of two perfectly pleasant c o m e d i e s f ro m D e c e m b e r s o f yore — “Miss Congeniality” and “Two Weeks Notice.” Studio heads are superstitious about these things, so it’s no coincidence that “Morgans” a r r i v e s a t p re c i s e l y t h e s a m e time of year as Lawrence’s other b o x - o f f i c e t r i u m p h s . S a d l y, L a w re n c e f o rg o t t o p a c k t h e laughs this time around. Parker and Hugh Grant play t h e t i t u l a r M o rg a n s , a h i g h powered Manhattan couple whose marriage took a hit when Paul cheated on Meryl. Paul professes bitter regret, but Meryl can’t bring herself to start over and love Paul “just a little.” Paul does manage to wheedle one dinner date, but their evening ends, as so many Manhattan nights do, with a dead body falling from a terrace. Since the man responsible for the dead body saw the Morgans and the murder somehow involves an international arms dealer (don’t ask), the Feds put the Morgans into witness re l o c a t i o n a n d s h i p t h e m t o a hole-in-the-wall town in Wyoming.
Associated Press
In this film publicity image released by Columbia Pictures, Hugh Grant, right, and Sarah Jessica Parker are shown in a scene from, “Have You Heard About the Morgans?” T h e re , t h e y b u n k w i t h t h e local marshal (Sam Elliott) and his gun-loving, wood-chopping deputy wife (Mary Steenburgen). F a s t e r t h a n you can hum the theme to “Green Acres,” you’ve got a clash of cultures to add to the already established spousal tiff. And that’s just too much fighting. Lawrence usually comes up with a decent hook upon which to hang his laugh
track, but he gets in his own way here by having Parker spend most of her time playing the wounded victim. Parker can mope with the best of them, but her strength is playing kicky a n d k o o k y. T h e r e a r e t i m e s h e re w h e n t h e a c t re s s s e e m s even more dispirited than her character. As for Grant, you can usually tell how desperate he feels about the material by how fast
he’s fluttering his eyelids. In “Morgans,” he’s batting them so furiously, it looks like he’s trying to achieve liftoff. It would have been a more interesting movie if he did. Instead, we have roaming grizzly bears and the inevitable, eye-stinging encounters with g r i z z l y b e a r re p e l l e n t , s o u l c ru s h i n g c o n f ro n t a t i o n s w i t h Wi l f o r d B r i m l e y ’ s m u s t a c h e (best not ask him to stub out
his cigarette), a rote (not rogue) Sarah Palin joke and the overall wistfulness that comes when you find yourself actually thinking they just don’t make movies like “Doc Hollywood” anymore. When, at one point, Parker tells Steenburgen that she b e l o n g s t o P E TA , t h e m e a t loving Steenburgen counters: “Me, too. People For Eating Tasty Animals.”
Clooney shines in "Up in the Air" By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge George Clooney is as remarkably good in "Up in the Air" as everyone keeps claiming. His handsome mug, cool demeanor, and gravely game voice lend themselves perfectly to the carefully crafted life that his character, Ryan Bingham, has created for himself. I was impressed with both the comedy and the deft nuance in this film, though maybe I shouldn’t have been. It is a creation of wunderkind Jason Reitman, the highly-thought of writer/director of "Thank You for Smoking" and "Juno." The supporting characters were fresh ideas, too, and I appreciate them more so because both are women, albeit two very different types of women. As a corporate hatchet man, Bingham prides himself on being able to fire anyone in any situation. It’s what he’s done very successfully for his entire career.
December 31, 2009
"Up in the Air" RATED: R for language and some sexual content. RUNNING TIME: 115 minutes. ROBERT'S RANKING: four stars out of four.
Transitioning people into unemployment is booming business, particularly in this troubled economy. The film is very much set in the here and the now, with large sequences shot in and around the St. Louis metro area, including some great scenes at Lambert Field’s main terminal. Traveling is a way of life for Bingham. He spends about eleven months of the year trekking back and forth across the country. He has access cards to every fast pass check-in, car rental
kiosk, and airport VIP lounge in the Lower 48 – from San Francisco to Milwaukee, and all the way down to South Beach. His self-affirmed goal in life, one devoid entirely of intimate relationships (his family-mid-West sisters--doesn’t even know him), is to reach the sacred mark of ten million frequent flyer miles with American Airlines, a feat achieved only by six other (alleged) people whom Ryan must idolize something fierce. The status of loyalty is his very essence. That’s why it’s such a shake-up when Natalie Keener ("Twilight’s" Anna Kendrick), a pint-sized wunderkind of her own, decides to pitch tele-terminations to her parent company, the one Ryan’s dutifully working for. This will essentially make his traveling, and then his way of life, obsolete. For the sake of trying to have it both ways, Ryan is given one last week to ferry Natalie around the States and show her what it actually is that he does so well. It’s a buddy picture
only in so much as they spend a lot of time together, forging as close to a fatherdaughter relationship as someone like Ryan Bingham will ever have. Together they meet, and Ryan falls for, another always-on-the-road gal named Alex (Vera Farmiga). The frequent, habitually unplanned or over-planned rendezvous that the attractive couple cook up are fun and flirty and downright adorable until we learn that she’s merely using him the same way she assumes he’s using her. It doesn’t turn out so cutesy as we expect for Ryan, Natalie, or any of the other excellent cameo players like J.K. Simmons, Danny McBride, or the decidedly unfunny turn by Jason Bateman. These are characters reduced to what makes them tick and they don’t always get a recharge when those batteries run down or the second hand stops moving. Still, I highly recommend this take on modern life choices. They are nicely on display in all forms.

Critics pick top films of 2009 By CHRISTY LEMIRE and DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press The top films of 2009, according to AP Movie Writer David Germain: 1. “The Hurt Locker” — The first great Iraq war film proves so universal that it can stand among the classics from past wars. Director Kathryn Bigelow drops viewers in at ground zero for a disturbingly close and claustrophobic look at the stresses and strains of disabling bombs for a living. Ably supported by Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty, Jeremy Renner is fierce, frightening and fearless as a sergeant so addicted to the adrenaline rush of defusing explosives that he can no longer conceive of another way of life. 2. “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” — An HIVpositive, illiterate Harlem teen impregnated by her father, twice, and relentlessly abused by her abominable mother. Out of this nightmare, director Lee Daniels crafts a magnificent story of resilience about a girl who discovers there really are decent people out there — lots of them. Gabourey Sidibe bursts forth with a masterful screen debut in the title role, while Mo’Nique makes up for a career of lowbrow comedy, performing like a woman possessed as the hateful mom. 3. “The White Ribbon” — Director Michael Haneke’s masterpiece, a grim yet glorious study of guilt, distrust and malice as unexplained violence and other mishaps befall a pre-World War I German town. A portent of things to come, the mystery seems rooted in the town’s children, a generation destined to unleash savagery such as the world had never known. Yet Haneke points a finger at everyone, his closing image in the film’s gorgeous black-and-white palate an unforgettable tableau of reproach and incrimination. 4. “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” — Some films are just a hoot, and this is one of them. Filmmaker Werner Herzog takes the notion of a corrupt cop from 1992’s “Bad Lieutenant” and twists it into one of the most blackly humorous crime tales ever. Nicolas Cage does his best work in years as a maniacal, drug-gorging detective racing through a murder investigation in a hallucinatory haze, playing every angle, dodging every impediment and spouting such wicked gems as, “Shoot him again. ... His soul’s still dancing.” 5. “Up” — By now, saying “the latest from Pixar Animation” should be enough to justify a movie’s top10 status. Director Pete Docter and his Pixar pals beguiled young and old with this story of a bitter widower who renews his sense of adventure by airlifting his house via helium balloons on a romp to
December 31, 2009
South America. Voice star Ed Asner conjures up the patron saint of lovable grouches, and a segment encapsulating the lost decades with the love of his life is one of the sweetest, saddest montages in film history. 6. “An Education” — Carey Mulligan is exquisite as a whipsmart 1960s British teen who jeopardizes her Oxford college future by taking up with a slick-talking older man (Peter Sarsgaard). Working from a sparkling script by Nick Hornby, director Lone Scherfig creates a rich portrait of free-spiritedness in stuffy Britain before the sexual revolution. Buoyed by Sarsgaard’s slippery charm and an impeccable supporting cast led by Alfred Molina, Mulligan graduates to the big time with a starmaking performance. 7. “(500) Days of Summer” — What guy could resist a woman who thinks “Octopus’s Garden” is the Beatles’ best song and declares that sexual gymnastics in a porn video look “pretty doable”? Zooey Deschanel bewitches as the dream woman of a lonely romantic (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the “3rd Rock From the Sun” co-star who reveals depths his sitcom never plumbed). Firsttime director Marc Webb’s clever rewind, fast-forward style and enchanting fantasy moments capture the soaring highs and miserable lows of that thing called love. 8. “Passing Strange” — Spike Lee oversees a blast of stage energy, his filmed version of the Broadway show so up-close and intimate that the players’ sweat practically drips onto the audiences’ lap. Musician Stew is the big-voiced master of ceremonies for his play, whose final performances Lee filmed to craft the movie. The small cast leaps seamlessly through multiple roles as they trace an artistic young black man’s journey to find his creative soul with grand humor, deep insight and songs that truly rock. AP Movie Critic Christy Lemire: 1. “Moon” — The year ’s best film upends your expectations about science fiction and repeatedly surprises you. Melancholy and mesmerizing, equal parts mystery and character drama, it keeps you guessing until the end. The intelligent, assured debut from director Duncan Jones harkens to the fundamentals of the genre, in which people and provocative ideas
mattered more than splashy effects. Sam Rockwell gives a subtle yet powerful performance, doing double duty as an astronaut working on the moon and a younger, fitter version of himself. Clint Mansell’s haunting score fits the beautifully bare-bones visuals. 2. “An Education” — Carey Mulligan is radiant as Jenny, a curious, clever teenager in 1961 London who gets whisked away to an exciting new life by a glamorous and much older man (Peter Sarsgaard). Director Lone Scherfig and writer Nick Hornby find just the right touch here with some tricky material. The challenge: how to make this man, and this ill-advised relationship, seem thrilling rather than creepy? Through Jenny’s eyes, we get caught up in the excitement, too, but as bystanders we know it can’t last. That gives “An Education” an inescapable tension. 3. “The Hurt Locker” — Director Kathryn Bigelow’s film is by far the most effective yet on the Iraq war, but its insights and reach extend beyond what’s happened there over the past several years. Jeremy Renner dazzles as the swaggering sergeant on an elite U.S. Army bomb squad. The other members of his team (Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty, both solid) don’t quite know what to make of him; he might be a genius at his job, an egomaniacal show-off or a little bit of both. The script from journalist Mark Boal, who spent time embedded with this kind of bomb squad, presents him as a fascinating but always believable jumble of contradictions. 4. “Up” — The title is deceptively simple, which is fitting, because the latest achievement from Pixar Animation is deeper and more complex on every level than it would initially appear. It’s a classic B-movie exotic adventure, but it’s told through the most hightech, gorgeous 3-D animation. It’s a mismatched buddy comedy, but the buddies are a curmudgeonly 78year-old man (voiced by Ed Asner) and a tubby 8-year-old boy (Jordan Nagai) — who wind up together in a flying house, traveling to South America. Between the richness of the characters, the meatiness of their interaction and the authenticity of the details, it doesn’t take long to forget that “Up” is a cartoon and

become immersed. 5. “District 9” — An intense, intelligent, well-crafted action movie — one that dazzles the eye with seamless special effects but also makes you think without preaching. Like “Moon,” it has the aesthetic trappings of science fiction, but first feature from commercial and musicvideo director Neill Blomkamp is really more of a character drama. Aliens who arrived in their spaceship more than 20 years ago have now been quarantined in cramped and dangerous South African slums; the nerdy bureaucrat charged with moving them to new quarters (the tremendous Sharlto Copley) is transformed in the process. 6. “A Serious Man” — The Coen brothers’ most personal film yet ties together some of their frequent themes: The universe is random, it gives you insurmountable challenges, and there’s nothing you can do about it. They’re clearly having a little fun in making life so difficult for the nebbishy Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg), a physics professor raising his family in a predominantly Jewish suburb of Minneapolis in 1967. Watching and wondering how and when he’ll snap provides laughs, but also a mounting sense of unease, and it should provoke lengthy debate
about the nature of faith. 7. “Fantastic Mr. Fox” — With its deadpan humor and minute details, this is a Wes Anderson movie through and through. But it’s also crammed with the kind of heart and humanity that have been missing from the director ’s most recent offerings. That’s ironic, given that Anderson’s latest is a stop-motion animation version of Roald Dahl’s illustrated children’s book about wily foxes. George Clooney’s smooth voice work is as good as his starring performance in “Up in the Air,” with Meryl Streep and Anderson pals Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman all excellent in supporting parts. 8. “Sugar” — In telling the story of a Dominican pitcher rising through baseball’s ranks, writingdirecting partners Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have taken an overly familiar, potentially cliched sports story, stripped it down and, in doing so, completely reinvented it. The filmmakers take the same no-nonsense approach they used with “Half Nelson,” their 2006 feature debut, and their gimmickfree storytelling only makes the trajectory of Miguel “Sugar” Santos seem more dramatic. But “Sugar” is also about immigration and, more universally, finding your place in the world.

Straight Talk About Underage Drinking When it comes to underage drinking, there’s good news and bad news. First, the bad news. By some estimates, nearly half of U.S. students in grades 7 through 12 drink alcohol — many of them more than once a week. Now, the good news. Studies show that the more we talk about the problems of underage drinking — its causes, its effects, and its consequences — the better the chances that you can avoid becoming the worst statistic of all: a fatal one.
Why do young people drink? Regardless of the fact that it’s illegal to drink before the age of 21, many teenagers do. And they do so for a variety of reasons. Some young people drink because their friends drink or they have the mistaken idea that if they drink they will fit in with their peers. Others drink because they think it makes them more fun to be around or it will make them feel good. Still others drink under the false notion that they can escape their problems or relieve feelings of fear, loneliness, and self-doubt. Sometimes, young people drink simply because they are bored. The problem is, there are no good reasons for a young person to drink. Instead of solving problems and helping you feel better about yourself, drinking can make things worse. And, when you abuse alcohol, the harder it is to stop. What happens when you drink? Alcohol is considered a depressant. Almost as soon as it is used, alcohol enters the bloodstream and affects the brain. It slows your heart rate, lowers your blood pressure and respiration rate, and decreases reflex responses. Alcohol remains in the bloodstream until the liver has time to break it down. Since it takes an hour for the liver to break down one ounce of alcohol, a person feels the effects for a long time. Young people, whose body weight is lower than that of an adult’s, reach a higher blood alcohol concentration level and show greater effects for longer periods of time. Misuse of alcohol can interfere with a person’s judgment, vision, and coordination. It can also impair higher mental functions, such as the ability to learn and remember things, and may increase aggressive behavior. Excessive use can lead to long-term problems, including alcohol dependence, liver damage, and psychotic behavior. And very high doses of alcohol can cause respiratory depression and even death.
T h a n k Yo u t o t h i s year’s Business Sponsors!
When it comes to drinking, what’s so magic about the age of 21? Drinking alcohol is one of those things that takes the full experience and judgment of an adult. It requires the ability to make responsible choices — choices you are still learning to make. It’s that simple. What are the consequences of drinking before you are 21? At the very least, the inability to make responsible choices about drinking can cause you to make a fool of yourself in front of the people you so desperately want to impress — your friends. Underage drinking is also associated with family problems, poor performance in school and athletics, truancy, fights, and assaults, not to mention the risk of stiff penalties if you’re caught. At worst, underage drinking can lead to death. Alcohol-related traffic crashes, drownings, fires, suicides, and homicides claim the lives of young people every day. 21 Means 21 In every state in America, it is illegal to buy or possess alcohol if you are under the age of 21. If you get caught, that means you could go to jail, lose your driver’s license, or be forced to pay a fine, among other things. It’s just not worth it!

The Arts Latin jazz will fill the Sheldon Eliane Elias will perform in St. Louis By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Jazz lovers can enjoy a little extra flair to their favored sound when Eliane Elias visits St. Louis in January. The Sheldon is presenting Eliane Elias, on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. KWMU host Dennis Owsley will present a pre-concert talk at 7:10 p.m. on “The Lure of Latin Jazz.” Known for her distinctive and recognizable musical style which blends her Brazilian roots with impressive instrumental jazz, classical and compositional skills, Eliane Elias is both an accomplished pianist and singer/songwriter. Elias’ solo career has spanned over eighteen albums to date, fifteen on Blue Note Records and three on RCA Victor Group, have garnered a great deal of praise from the critics, while all have topped the Billboard and Jazz Radio charts, also earning her the title of Best New Talent by the jazz critics poll of JAZZIZ magazine. The Grammy-nominated Elias is heralded as one of jazz’s finest pianists, offering distinctive renditions of a variety of Brazil’s music, including intricate bossa nova and moving interpretations of classic tunes by her country’s great songwriters. Considered one of the great interpreters of Antônio Carlos Jobim’s music, Elias has been featured on many concert tributes to Jobim and recorded two albums solely dedicated to the works of the composer, "Plays Jobim" and "Sings Jobim." Recently, Eliane Elias was a featured performer in "Calle 54," director Fernando Trueba’s documentary film on Latin jazz. The soundtrack album was nominated for a 2001 Grammy in the Best Latin Jazz Album category. In the same year, Elias was also nominated for a Grammy in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category for her album "Impulsive!" with Bob Brookmeyer and the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra. Washington University to host Circus INcognitus Jamie Adkins can walk on wire, stand atop unsupported ladders, do handstands off the back of a chair and juggle just about anything. But in Circus INcognitus, this internationally acclaimed clown, balancing artist and acrobat — a featured soloist with Cirque du Soleil and Montreal’s Cirque Éloize — must attempt the one thing he fears most: public speaking. Next month Adkins will bring Circus INcognitus, his family friendly solo show, to Washington University’s Edison Theatre. The one-time-only performance, which begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, will launch Edison’s annual ovations for young people series, which presents specially priced matinees for audiences of all ages. Tickets are $10, though subscriptions to all four ovations for young people events are available for $6 each. Tickets are available at the Edison Theatre Box Office and through all MetroTix outlets. Edison Theatre is located in the Mallinckrodt Student Center, 6445 Forsyth Blvd. For more information, call (314) 935-6543 or email edison@ wustl.edu. energy, Adkins uses modest, everyday objects to fashion elaborate circus routines that are at once funny, breathtaking and surprisingly poignant. The hour-long show begins with Adkins entering a dark and nearly empty stage, flashlight in hand, searching for a comically long light switch. Dressed casually in baggy pants and suspenders, he is too shy to address the waiting microphone but allows his physical gifts to speak for him as he struggles to articulate ideas about what a performance should be. Things begin simply enough. A ping-pong ball bounces on a wooden chair seat. A crumpled piece of paper refuses to be discarded. A bowler hat twirls up and down Adkins’ arms. Yet the routines grow increasingly spectacular and outrageous as Adkins duels with a pair of wildly roaming ladders and does handstands atop a not-so-very-tight rope. “Though Mr. Adkin’s best routines draw OOHS and AHS, he is just as successful at drawing laughs,” notes The New York Times. The New York Daily Gazette adds that, “Adkins hasn’t reinvented juggling or clowning, he’s just made them more interesting to watch through the powers of personality and grace.”
Jamie Adkins Adkins began his career at the age of 13 as street performer in his native San Diego. He then joined San Francisco’s Pickle Family Circus, an influential cooperative that mixes traditional circus skills with music, drama, dance and humor (while eschewing live animals and other threering tropes). As a member of Cirque Éloize, which he joined in 1998, Adkins was featured in more than 500 performances of Excentricus, the company’s first international touring show. He then teamed up with the Cirque Éloize offshoot Theatre T & Co. to produce and star in the screwball duet Typo (2004), which follows a Chaplinesque playwright struggling to outfox writer ’s block. Nominated for three Drama Desk Awards, Typo won the admiration of critics and audiences and toured the world for more than 200 performances. Additional credits include a starring role in WinTuk, Cirque du Soleil’s annual winter holiday show, now in its third season at New York’s WaMu Theater. His many honors include both the Annie Fratellinni Clown Prize and a Bronze Medal at the prestigious Festival International du Cirque de Demain in Paris.

Travel Travel briefs 10 ski resorts with diversions for the rest of us NEW YORK (AP) — Skiers want nothing but to be on the slopes this time of year. But what if they bring friends or family along who don’t ski? Sher m a n s Tr a v e l — h t t p : / / www.shermanstravel.com — a publisher of travel deals and destination advice, has come up with a list of 10 of the best ski resorts in the world for nonskiers, from the Alps to New England to the West. They are: —Austria’s Bad Gastein, home to 18 natural hot springs in addition to challenging snow bowls and high-altitude views. Shermans Travel recommendation for value lodging: Haus Hirt Hotel & Spa. —Megeve, France, where no one hits the slopes before 11 a.m. and lunch can take hours. Local Michelin-rated eateries include Flocons de Sel, La Ferme de Mon Pere, and the hidden Domaine de la Sasse, reached by a 20-minute hike on snowshoes. —Mont Tremblant, in Quebec, Canada, where skiers love the wide runs and nonskiers love the pedestrian-friendly village with good food and great apres-ski. Value lodging recommendation from Shermans: Chateau Beauvallon. — P a r k C i t y, U t a h , w h i c h has terrain for every skier, and attractions for nonskiers like the Kimball Art Center, shows at the Egyptian Theatre, and the annual film festival at Sundance each January. —Sierra Nevada — no, not the mountain range in California and Nevada — the one in Spain. Yes, skiing is possible in a sunny, Mediterranean country. For activities off the slope, head to Grenada, an hour from the Pradollano ski village. —Stowe, Vt., offers New England charm for skiers and nonskiers alike, including 50 restaurants, a half-dozen wellness centers and spas, and for those who are shy of the slopes but don’t mind cross-country, the Nordic Center at Trapp Family Lodge, with 90 scenic miles of trails. — S u n Va l l e y, I d a h o , w h i c h offers sunny slopes on Mount Baldy for skiers and the Western charm of Ketchum for nonskiers. —Whistler Blackcomb, where the Peak 2 Peak gondola will take you between the summits of Whistler and Blackcomb whether you’re skiing or just sightseeing. Shermans says the village is also known for its rowdy nightlife. —Zermatt, Switzerland, a fantasyland in the shadow of the Matterhorn, where the streets are lined with glitzy shops and glam clubs but are otherwise quiet, thanks to the ban on gas-powered cars.
SkiResorts. com advice for celebrating Christmas on a ski trip NEW YORK (AP) — There’s a new Web site for skiers, and it offers a lot more than deals. SkiResorts.com also has features on all aspects of the ski experience. Readers can check out profiles of resorts like Loon, N.H., or learn nicknames for various types of snow, from fluffy champagne powder to that heavy sticky stuff also known as concrete. SkiResorts.com is also offering a couple of checklists for skiers who plan to spend the holidays away from home, with tips for decorating your hotel room and gift-giving on the slopes. One recommendation: Ship a small faux Christmas tree ahead to your destination, unless you have confirmed and reserved a live tree in the town where you’ll be staying. SkiResorts.com says most resort towns run out of trees fast if they have them at all. You’ll also want to ship some cheap ornaments — nothing breakable — or think of creative ways to decorate with simple items, like popcorn and cranberry strands that are easy to make. SkiResorts.com points out that the local hardware store may be your best resource for inexpensive holiday items like garlands. You can even hang your ornaments on a garland instead of a tree. But bring or ship stockings, along with tape to hang them. The Web site says some rental companies provide decorating as a special concierge service; some will even set up and decorate a tree, but it will cost you. SkiResorts.com also suggests shopping before you leave home and either shipping the gifts ahead or taking them with you. Shopping for gifts after you arrive can be expensive in a resort town, and there may not be the kind of selection you have at home. Plus, do you want to spend your ski vacation waiting on lines in stores? Just remember: Wrapped packages will be opened by security at the airport if you’re bringing
them as carryon, so either pack them unwrapped, or put them in checked bags. A n ot h er o p t io n : Se n d th e m ahead, but be aware of the risks of theft and loss. Get insurance, and get the name of someone at the lodging who can arrange to have any packages that arrive for you placed safely inside your accommodations. If you are ordering gifts online to be sent to your destination, be certain that they’ll arrive in time, and again, make arrangements for them to be held safely until you arrive. Finally, SkiResorts.com says, pack a collapsible bag so that you have a way to lug all your goodies home when your trip is over.
New resort in British Columbia for skiers: Revelstoke ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Ski.com has added Revelstoke Mountain Resort, a new ski destination in British Columbia, to its top 100 list. Revelstoke, described by Ski. c o m a s t h e n e w e s t re s o r t i n North America, also claims the continent’s biggest vertical, up to 720 inches of snow annually, 3,000 acres of lift-serviced terrain, and an additional half-million acres of helicopter and snowcat skiing. It’s located in the Monashee and Selkirk mountains in southeastern British Columbia, with a 5,620-foot vertical rise and the longest ski run in North America, which goes for 9.5 m i l e s . Bon Appetit: Food specialty shops now offering in-store dining NEW YORK (AP) — Food markets and specialty stores are no longer just places to buy supplies for making meals at home. Many
now offer dining on the premises as well, according to Bon Appetit magazine’s December issue. That’s good news for tourists, who may enjoy strolling through a famous food market but have no way to prepare or enjoy fresh produce or raw ingredients if they’re staying in a hotel. Here are some of what Bon Appetit calls the best dining spots in stores around the U.S.: —Surfas, in Culver City, Calif., a restaurant supply store with an adjacent cafe. —Oxbow Public Market, in Napa, Calif., which has five restaurants, plus a micro-winery, culinary bookstore, and specialty tea store. —Il Cane Rosso, an eatery in San Francisco’s Ferry Building Marketplace in the Embarcadero, where you’ll also find retailers like Sur La Table and Culinaire
antiques. —B&G Oysters and The Butcher Shop, eateries that are among four foodie places in Boston, all at the intersection of Waltham and Tremont streets. The others are Stir, which offers cookbooks and a demonstration kitchen, and Plum Produce, a shop for specialty foods. —Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis, which offers more than 40 locally owned shops under one roof, including Taqueria Los Ocampo. —Despana, in New York City, a boutique in Soho specializing in the foods of Spain. But there’s also a hidden lunch counter serving tapas, sandwiches and small-plate appetizers. —Bolsa in Dallas, which hosts a farmer ’s market and a cafe with wine and local products like chocolate, cookies and coffee.

L’Ecole Culinaire – where food is a passion By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Food is a passion for many people. However, few are culinary artists. L’Ecole Culinaire offers the skills, knowledge and guidance to create culinary artists. Located at 9811 South 40 Drive, in Clayton, Mo., the culinary school's curriculum is designed to provide all students with an exceptionally strong and well-rounded background in all aspects of the hospitality, food and beverage industry. Students take only one major course during each phase, which allows them to concentrate their learning efforts. The objective is to prepare students to perform the tasks necessary for entrylevel management in the food service industry. The program also offers the unique opportunity to work and experience a genuine restaurant setting with the college’s own on-campus restaurant that is open to the public. Dining Delights
Da Baldo’s One of the reasons The Hill is famous By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Da Baldo’s Trattoria is an Italian restaurant located on The Hill, 3518 Hampton Ave., in St. Louis. The cuisine is elegant, but the dress is casual or business casual. The owners, Baldo and Madda Gandolfo, offer this as their mission statement: “Every time you order dinner, we create! Your dinner at Baldo’s is a masterpiece in the finest Italian dining tradition. Relax and enjoy your evening. Thank you for giving us the honor to serve you.” In other words, every meal ordered is prepared specifically for the customer. There are no prepared entrees awaiting order. They use fresh ingredients and everything is served hot, right from the stove or oven. The atmosphere is traditionally decorated with elegant mirrors and Italian art. The seating is open, but comfortable enough to have some privacy. The restaurant has two banquet rooms available for group seating and a full bar that allows pipe and cigar smoking. A brief history of the restaurant: “When Baldo Gandolfo arrived in the United States, from his small town of Salemi, just southwest from Palermo, Sicily, he thought that he would one day be a teacher or diplomat. His BA in Languages and Master's Degree in Education would lead one to agree. Yet, since 1969, Baldo Gandolfo has thrilled the St. Louis area with exquisite Italian cooking. He became partners with La Cino’s Restaurant and in 1976 opened Italian Garden Restaurant. This partnership lasted many years until 1981 when Baldo sold his share of La Cino’s and Italian Garden Restaurant and opened Da Vinci’s. Da Vinci’s is now renamed Da Baldo’s but one thing remains consistant throughout the years: dedication to authentic, quality Italian food.” The menu offers authentic Italian cuisine. Appetizer selections: Scampi Baldo, Fried Artichoke, Prosciutto and Melon, Fried Calamari, Shrimp Cream, Fried Eggplant, Stuffed Mushrooms, Eggplant Parmigiana, Escargot, Ricciole di Melanzane (stuffed eggplant), Bruschetta and Toasted Ravioli. Pasta selections: Linguine al Pesto di Salemi (Fresh Tomato, Garlic, Olive Oil and Basil), Linguine Clams, Linguine Bucaniera (Seafood Sauce), Tortellini Soup, Tortellini alla Panna (Prosciutto, Peas, Mushrooms and Sherry Wine), Bowtie Cognac, Trenette al Pesto (Pesto Sauce and Shrimp), Penne all’ Amatriciana (Pancetta, Onion, Olive Oil and Garlic), Cannelloni, Spaghetti al Pomodoro, and Fettuccine Alfredo. Their specialty pizza includes Margherita (Tomato, Mozzerella and Basil), Salsiccia and Vegetarian. They offer a variety of salads and Italian fried potatoes. Their extensive entree list offers chicken, veal, fish,

shrimp and steak. A few of the choices: Chicken Pinot Grigio (Mushrooms, White Wine and Lemon), Veal Piccata, Tilapia Mediterraneo (Fresh Tomato, Garlic, Olive Oil and Capers), Salmon (with White Wine and Capers), Filet Mignon (Porcini and Cognac) and all are served with salad and the side order of the day. You can’t leave out the desserts at Da Baldo’s. Maybe a Cannoli (Italian Pastry stuffed with Ricotta Cheese), or Torta Al Mousse di Cioccolata (Chocolate Mousse Cake), just as a sampling. One of Da Blado’s specialties is their Italian ice creams, which they make themselves and sell to a number of St. Louis eateries. Finish off your perfect meal with an Espresso, a Cafe’ Latte or an Italian Steamer. The prices are on average about $15 an entree. They also offer daily specials, many of which include soup, salad, special entree and a scoop of their Italian ice cream. Baldo’s is open Tuesday through Sunday. Dinner Hours: Tuesday to Thursday: 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday: 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.; Sunday: 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Reservations are recommended, but not required, 314-832-6660. Parking is a little tricky, located directly across the street.

Dining Delights OK, we admit these are our opinions and you certainly should form your own, but it is nice to have a guide of places to eat when you are undecided or want to try something new or different. To send us a suggestion of a restaurant to try, e-mail theedge@ edwpub.net Falcon Diner Ameristar Casino-St. Charles 4 stars This top notch diner serves more than typical diner fare and you will not leave hungry. With their “Happy Days” decor and a breakfast, lunch and dinner menue that includes a one pound chicken fried steak and burgers made to order, you will have to ask for a doggy bag. Their bakery counter is so popular, they had to give it a place of its own outside the diner so passers by can enjoy the magic also. Bartolino’s Osteria St. Louis 5 stars Italian cuisine at its best. Elegant dining with a decor reminiscent of the glamours ‘40s. Most of the traditional Italian dishes but additional gourmet Italian fare that is fantastic to the pallet. The Linguine Pinoli, includes shrimp, mushrooms, spinach, pine nuts, lemon butter and garlic, is a tasty combination over fresh linguine. The bread is fresh and wonderful. A little pricier than a family restaurant, but well worth the price for a nice date night or special night out. Boat House Restaurant Forest Park, St. Louis 3 1/2 stars A fun place to dine, whether you are out on a nice spring afternoon or want a great place to eat before a Muny show. Serving brunch ever Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; lunch everyday, dinner Tues. - Sun. starting at 3 p.m. Choose from an array of signature sandwiches, pizzas, appetizers, salads, and more. There is a kids menu and you can pull up the pooch to the table, inside or outside, as they are pet friendly. Jump in a paddle boat and take a cruise to work off the good food. Best Steak House St. Louis St. Louis 1 star Maybe it is the price (very cheap), maybe it is “shouting out” your order, maybe it is just the ambiance of the noisy, a bit chaotic atmosphere that draws people to Best Steak House, but some of those reasons are exactly why I wouldn’t return. Not to mention the poor quality of “steak” they serve. Many people love it, so try it for yourself.

Right across from the Fox Theatre. Bandana’s Barbecue Collinsville 4 stars Bandana’s is one our family favorites. Excellent food, excellent prices, great service. Their smoked meats have a great smoky flavor and are so tender. The sauce choices are the best. You have the choice of two sides, but I love their cole slaw. Their garlic toast is fabulous! Come hungry, loosen the belt on the way out. Ruby Tuesdays 2 1/2 stars Collinsville/Fairview Heights Another sports bar themed restaurant with all the memorabilia on the walls, but a good place to eat. The prices are a little higher than a typical family restaurant. Service is normally pretty good. The Buffalo Burger is a great choice and their salad bar is very fresh and clean. Joe’s Crab Shack Fairview Heights 2 1/2 stars Great fun, but for the price and what you get, not really a bargain. Wait staff sing and dance and very casual dining. Alfonzo’s Maryville 3 1/2 stars Food is awesome, especially the tomato basil pizza and their bread bites. Prices are a bit higher than you would expect to pay for a pizza dinner. Good for families with kids, they can play in the arcade while you are waiting on the food, just bring your wallet.
nachos. Portions are large and prices are very reasonable. Service has been great every time. Lone Star Steak House O’Fallon 4 stars Great steaks, seafood and chicken. Salads are good, including their Texas Ranch dressing. Of course they have “bloomin’ onions” and peanuts to munch on while you wait for your food. Fun atmosphere. Wasabi Edwardsville 4 stars Okay, I admit that I hesitantly give this four stars as I am not a lover of Sushi, nor am I an expert of Sushi. But, I have eaten their Shrimp Tempura, and have tasted some of their other dishes, all of which are very good. But those I went with love Sushi and claim that theirs is awesome. Service was very good and helpful. Buffet City Edwardsville 3 stars Huge selection of food. Chinese selections, American selections, both hot and cold. Some really good, some not so much. Dinner prices a little high if you are going as a family. Good service. Finn Inn Grafton 3 stars Fun ambiance with fish tanks built into the wall. Watch the fish while you eat. Lots of fish dishes, sandwiches, daily specials, etc. Good fish sandwich. Good service.
Cinco De Mayo Troy 3 stars Endless chips and salsa, good menu choices, typical Mexican fare. Service pretty good.
Johnson’s Corner Alton 3 1/2 stars They have best pork tenderloin sandwich in the world. Everything else is okay, but you won’t pay much. Service is fair.
Chevy’s Fresh Mex O’Fallon 4 1/2 stars One of my personal favorites, love their fresh salsa and chips. Also love their chicken fajita
Tony’s Alton 3 stars Known for their pepperloin, they serve steaks, pasta, chicken. Prices are a bit high, so go for a special
event. Dress is casual. Have outside dining also. Zia’s On the Hill-St. Louis 4 stars Their seafood stuffed mushrooms are fantastic. The appetizers alone are worth the visit. Veal, chicken, steaks, sandwiches are all offered. There homemade fresh pastas are some of the best. Average pasta dish about $12. Good service. Lorenzo’s Trattoria On the Hill-St. Louis 4 1/2 stars The tomato and fresh mozzerella salad is fantastic. The ambiance is perfect to go with another couple, a group or just two of you. Prices are a little high. 54th Street Bar and Grill Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection, something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable and have not had a bad selection yet. Remember to get your frequent diner card stamped when ordering an entree so you can get one free when your card is full. Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot. Good group setting. Cold Stone Creamery Edwardsville 5 stars I really would give this more stars if we had them, but all we
can give is five. I LOVE their ice cream concoctions, particularly the Cheesecake Fantasy or the Apple Pie A La Cold Stone. I really could put more selections here, but use your imagination! Red Apple Maryville 4 stars The Red Apple is another favorite of our family, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a huge menu selection, including Italian, broasted chicken, gyros, sandwiches of all kinds, plate specials, fish selections – fried and broiled, and much more. Service is always impeccable and prices can’t be beat. La Fonda Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars Good food, good service. All you can eat chips and salsa are great complement to their abundant menu. Their rice and beans are excellent also. Bigelo’s Bistro Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, pastas and more. Great downtown Edwardsville location where you are sure to see someone you know. Carisillo’s Mexican Restaurant Collinsville 3 1/2 stars A great selection, similar to LaFonda. Good prices and endless chips and salsa. Service is quick and friendly. Not the fanciest, especially on the outside, but don’t judge a Mexican restaurant by its cover!
