The Intelligencer Media Kit -2010

who we are The first publication of the Intelligencer, then a four-page weekly called the Madison Intelligencer, came off the press November 13, 1862. As Edwardsville’s oldest, continuouslyoperated business, the “I” has grown and prospered in a world where newspapers have evolved from hot-lead type to computer generated pages. And while a number of supposed “threats” would undoubtedly be the demise of the newspaper business, the Intelligencer has withstood radio, television and the Internet, joining the latter to provide the community with www.theintelligencer. com. As part of our recent changes, the Intelligencer launched the e-Edition early in 2009. e-Edition, a scanned page-bypage edition that readers can subscribe to and access via the Web site, www. theintelligencer.com, allows a new generation of newspaper readers to become familiar with the newspaper. This new product gives readers freedom to peruse the Intelligencer wherever they find a computer, and it avoids printing and delivery costs, thus lending itself to a cheaper rate than home delivery. However, the old-fashioned newspaper print is still a great favorite among many of their subscribers, both young and old. The Intelligencer’s core product is the Edwardsville Intelligencer, which is published Monday through Saturday. The Intelligencer is also a proud provider of Newspapers in Education, a non-profit program that delivers newspapers and curriculum to teachers at no charge to them or the schools.

Other Intelligencer products include a weekly entertainment magazine, On the Edge of the Weekend, Madison Country Homes magazine, Hot Local Cars magazine, www. theintelligencer.com, www.theintelligencer. com/homes (powered by Zillow.com), www. hotlocalcars.com, and numerous extra publications to help serve the community. The Intelligencer serves residents of Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, Maryville, Collinsville, Troy, Worden, Alhambra, and Hamel. They also serve surrounding communities through numerous media sponsorships and by participating in a variety of community events and charitable efforts. The Intelligencer joined the Edwardsville/ Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce in 1954.“Access to the Chamber has been a very useful asset. They keep us informed on community events, new business openings and new residents to our community. All of this allows the Intelligencer to stay as up-todate as possible. In addition, the networking connections for our advertising staff are extremely helpful in finding new business for the newspaper.” A quote by Thomas Jefferson from January 16, 1787 sums up the Intelligencer’s philosophy: “The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”

The figures released Friday show that the total value of announced projects either under construction or completed during the reporting period that ended Sept. 30 is up more than a half-billion dollars over record-breaking totals in the 2006-07 review. "In the midst of all the pessimistic news about the slow down in the economy, we're pleased to report that developments were still moving full steam ahead in Southwestern Illinois during the

Madison County past year," said Suzanne Butler, president of the Leadership Council, the member-based, economic development corporation that compiles the economic data for Madison and St. Clair counties. "The continuing investments across so many sectors of our economy reaffirm Southwestern Illinois' position as a prime Midwestern development location." The following are some of the highlights from this year's review. The $2.5 billion in projects already under construction by the end of September and the $6.1 billion in additional announced projects include the multi-billion investment at ConocoPhillips that moved forward this fall. Children’s Museum welcomes winter Water treatment

facility gets OK

By ANN NICCUM aniccum@edwpub.net Winter Celebrations has started at the Children’s Museum in Edwardsville.

Project will begin in spring of 2009 By LAURA SCATURRO lscaturro@edwpub.net

Edwardsville Executive Director Lisa Leehy said the exhibit opened Friday. Every winter before the holidays, the museum puts together a collection of displays showing the numerous holiday celebrations conducted around the world. The event includes the traditional American celebrations, such as Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, and many others from around the world like Las Posadas, Daeborum and Winter Solstice. Leehy said Winter Celebrations allows the children to learn about holiday celebrations from around the world. She said each celebration station will include activities and games to help the children learn more about each celebration and the country in which it is celebrated. Leehy said children will also be able to create a craft at each celebration station and there will also be an opportunity for them to write a letter to Santa while visiting the post office in the museum. She said most regular exhibits will be closed during Winter Celebrations. Winter Celebrations will continue at the museum through Jan. 3. See "MUSEUM" on Page 3

Holiday Shores

Holiday Shores Sanitary District trustees have announced that a decision to construct a new water treatment facility has been finalized and construction is planned to begin in the spring of 2009. Approximately 1,400 customers received the announcement by mail to their homes, detailing the decision to build the new facility. The existing water treatment plant is 40 years old. The announcement stated that the treatment plant has been upgraded continually over the years to comply with the increasingly stringent

water quality requirements imposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) on local water producers and distributors. Henry, Meisenheimer & Gende Inc. has been hired to develop the plans and DU-CON, Inc. will be the construction manager for the new 9,600-square-foot facility. "The new water treatment facility will have the capacity to meet the needs of Holiday Shores well into the foreseeable future,” said Ken Dulle, district operations manager. See "WATER" on Page 3

Holidays, parties and alcohol. It’s a combination nearly as common this time of year as mistletoes and packed shopping malls. It’s also one that can be disastrous if allowed to get out of con-

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) — A dog weighing more than 120 pounds survived being frozen to a sidewalk overnight, probably because he was insulated by layers of fat, authorities said.

The Sheboygan County Humane Society says the “morbidly obese” dog, an aging border collie mix named Jiffy, froze to the sidewalk when he was left out overnight Wednesday.
