Edwardsville Arts Center’s classes a boon to summer activities
By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com
Whether accomplished or a novice, young or old, Edwardsville Arts Center (EAC) has an art class for everyone. The Edwardsville Arts Center’s mission to inspire the lives of youth and the creative spirit of adults through classes, exhibits and cultural events, especially underscores the center’s education program, vast in scope and variety through art classes. Years of research have shown that creative activities can relieve stress, aid communication and help arrest cognitive decline, according to Harvard Women’s Health Watch, July 2017. “Weaving, painting, collage — we’ve come up with tons of different art,” EAC Gallery Manager Carolyn Tidball noted. “Our Saturday free art classes, we’ve been doing since 2015, every Saturday.” District 7 elementary schools’ art teacher, Sarah Willig, leads “Free Kids Saturday Art,” from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Edwardsville Arts Center, at 6165 Center Grove Road. “She does a different project each week, which are listed on our website for four weeks out,” Tidball said of Willig, whose Free Kids Saturday Art classes are listed at edwardsvilleartscenter. com. “She does tons of projects.” One month ago, the EAC added a teacher, Casey Mullin, a recent Southern Illinois University Edwardsville graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics and a bachelor’s in education. “They’re both really fantastic, with art classes and kids,” Tidball said. “We’re thrilled for Casey to join us, she’s really fun. The
Edwardsville Arts Center-led Kids Art Classes
• FREE Kids Saturday Art Classes (no registration is necessary) Join EAC every Saturday for free kids’ art projects! Every Saturday EAC does a new fun, creative project. No registration is necessary, just show up. Class is from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Saturday, rain or shine (except major holidays, such as Christmas or Thanksgiving), and it’s not necessary to stay the whole three hours — stay as long or as short as you want! Class projects are listed at edwardsvilleartscenter. com and will be updated every five to six weeks. This class is for ages 2 through 14 and held in the Edwardsville Arts Center Gallery. Instructors are Sarah Willig and Casey Mullin. Upcoming classes are below: Saturday, June 22 — Masks Students will create a mask using a variety of materials. Students will use cardstock as a base and may choose to attach elastic or a stick depending on how they want to wear it. It will be up to the student if they would like to make a superhero, animal or mythical-themed mask. Saturday, June 29 — 4th of July Tie Dye The EAC’s annual 4th of July class is tie-dying T-shirts! This is a short project and student drop-offs are not recommended. Please bring one to three 100 percent cotton white shirts, they do not need to be new. The EAC will provide patterns, dye, rubber bands and gloves. A letter will be sent home explaining after-dye care instructions. • Drop-in Drawing (6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday; no registration is necessary) This class is great for kids with an interest in drawing and is an excellent introduction to the arts. Class starts with warm-up exercises and one basic group drawing lesson. The rest of the time will be spent on individual skill building, based on each child’s personal interest. From princesses to portraits to Pokemon, instructor Steph Plant will help guide students to find fun ways to build their confidence in drawing. This class is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday for third through eighth grade students. The class takes place in the Edwardsville Arts Center Gallery. The class fee is $10, payable upon arrival. No registration is necessary. • Ceramics: Wheel Throwing (five-week class; 1-3 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, from July 8 - Aug. 7) In this class, students will learn basic wheel-throwing techniques. First, students will practice making cylinders. From there, kids will learn to make cups, bowls, vases and plates. This is a great class for beginning students, as well as students who have had some experience on the wheel. This class is for sixth through 12th grade students. The class instructor is Tori Miener and takes place in the Edwardsville High School ceramics room, D120 (enter through Entrance 16 on north-east corner of EHS’ building). The five-week class is $180. • YMCA Summer Arts Camp (9 to 11:45 a.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays weekly, dates vary depending on class) Kids can sign up for any of the classes offered during this seven week session! Classes focus on topics including ceramics, fibers, drawing and painting, and “All the Arts.” Each respective class takes place from 9 to 11:45 a.m. for one dedicated week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (then the class changes to another YMCA art class during the same time on the same days). YMCA members can sign up online at edwardsvilleymca.com; non-members must sign up in person at either Edwardsville YMCA Niebur (Esic) or Meyer Center facilities or at edwardsvilleartscenter.com. See the link at edwardsvilleartscenter.com for more details on each class. The class fee is $80 per week and takes place in the Edwardsville High School ceramics room, D120 (YMCA will bus students to and from the classroom). These weekly classes are for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The instructors are Sarah Willig and Rosie Koester.
For The Edge Edwardsville Arts Center (EAC) adult art class students create artwork in the Edwardsville High School ceramics room, adjacent to the arts center, which features its own modern main gallery and a student gallery, as well as a museum shop, with a monthly featured artist and art for sale. kids love them, they love the kids. They have really creative ideas.” Most of EAC’s art classes are available all year, such as “One Shot” Workshops, First Friday Watercolor, Drop In Classes and Free Kids Saturday Art classes, but some special children’s series happen only once a year — the Summer Art Camp, in partnership with the Edwardsville YMCA, open to all school districts; and, Summer Zone, through the Edwardsville Community District 7 Schools. Summer Art Camp “There’s still availability up until a few days before class starts for the YMCA’s Summer Art Camp,” Tidball explained. “You can also sign up for individual week’s of class (at edwardsvilleymca. com and edwardsvilleartscenter.com).” At the end of each children’s summer series, each group gets to feature their art in dedicated exhibitions See CENTER, Page 11

These will be the first bobbleheads ever produced for Stanley Cup Playoff MVP Ryan O’Reilly, Jordan Binnington and Colton Parayko, and fans can submit a request for other players to be added to the series on the product page of the Milwaukee, Wisconsinbased National Bobblehead Hall of Fame at bobbleheadhall.com. The line of bobbleheads is available for pre-order now in the Hall of Fame and Museum’s Online Store; the bobbleheads, which are officially licensed and produced by FOCO, are going into immediate production and are expected to ship in October. The Stanley Cup Champions bobbleheads feature each player and team mascot, Louie, holding a replica Stanley Cup while standing on a base in the shape of the 2019 Stanley Cup Final logo. A bobblehead also is being produced of Stanley Cup Playoff MVP Ryan O’Reilly, holding the Conn Smythe Trophy, which is awarded to the most valuable player during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. A mini set of three bobbleheads featuring O’Reilly, Binnington and Vladimir Tarasenko in action poses also is available. Along with the full line of officially licensed Stanley Cup Champions Bobbleheads, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame is producing a bobblehead of St. Louis Blues Superfan and 11-year-old Blues darling, Laila Anderson. The Laila Anderson St. Louis Superfan Bobblehead is being produced exclusively by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame in conjunction with and approval from Laila and her family. If folks didn’t know who Laila was prior to the Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis Blues’ historic night June 12, in Boston, now they do. She stole the hearts of all when she appeared during the live broadcast of the Blues’ first ever Stanley Cup Championship win. Laila inspired the team, and the world, while fighting a rare life-threatening immune disease called hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).

Double feature: from Disney to devilish By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist
They’re really cranking them out now. Disney continues its quest for box office world domination by recently releasing its live-action remake of “Aladdin.” It went over well. Those still marveling at the marquee drawing power of Will Smith, even as a blue genie, should stop complaining, because he’s often the best part of an overlong movie that skews a little melodramatic. “Aladdin” is a better effort than “Dumbo” was earlier this year, but the biggest prize — “The Lion King” — is still to come in late July. Street rat Aladdin (Mena Massoud) gets mixed up with Grand Vizier Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) in a battle over a powerful lamp that contains a wish-granting genie (Smith). Awesome. Edwardsville’s St. Louis Bread Co., aka Panera Bread, is one of those places that works for any meal – breakfast, lunch or dinner – and you can go as little or as big as you want to go. By that, I mean you can grab a quick bite, stop by for a snack or a light lunch, have a full meal, or even add a dessert if you want. Not that there aren’t other local joints that have the same kind of versatility, but for some reason, “Bread Co,” as we like to call it, always seems to suit everyone, no matter the time of day. I like to eat in, but to-go orders are nice, too, and the convenient drive-thru helps to streamline it. And once it is in front of me, I hover over it like I’ve never had a bite to eat in my life. Don’t get too close or you might get shooed – or worse. My standby favorites are the tuna sandwich and baked potato soup. I have a really hard time skipping those to try something new. However, the soup is only served on Mondays

Continued from Page 12 and Wednesdays, so since we stopped by on a Sunday evening, I had no choice but to mix it up a little. I stayed true to my tuna, and opted for the 10-vegetable soup, which was actually a good substitute for the baked potato. It was tasty and filling, with tomato, red and yellow peppers, onions, corn, carrots, Swiss chard, poblano peppers and garlic in seasoned vegetable stock with chickpeas, sprouted brown rice and red fife, black chia, spelt, wheatberries and dried Aleppo chili. All that, and then topped with a lemon wheel. But baked potato is still my favorite – I can have favorites, right? It is made with home-style cuts of russet potatoes simmered with select seasonings and smoked bacon in a rich cream sauce flavored with spring onion and snipped chives. Doesn’t that description sound yummy? And the tuna never disappoints me, either. I like the bread – a black pepper focaccia - and the added red onion, tomato and lettuce. My husband tried one of the newest additions to the menu, the toasted Tuscan chicken sandwich. Leave it to him to try the chicken. There’s not a chicken sandwich in town he hasn’t In this column, Vicki Benning- tried. But that’s OK. It’s what he likes and tends to be one of the ton shares her love of food and healthier choices on any menu. Panera’s is listed as having all that involves, from special chicken raised without antibiotdishes at local and regional ics, provolone, Parmesan, arurestaurants to new trends and gula, smoky tomato confit, basil fads, and things to try at home. pesto and basil mayo, toasted on artisan ciabatta bread. And he Contact her at vbennington@ was quite happy with his choice. sbcglobal.net with comments, Of course, there are many choices of sandwiches, soups ideas or suggestions. and salads on the menu, all with lots of vegetables. You can order full-size or half of most of the items, or “pick two” and try two different dishes. And though I’m normally a tea drinker with meals, St. Louis Bread Co. has a reputation for good coffee. Veering from my usual two cups of coffee (only in the morning) routine, I tried a cup of light roast with my meal. It was full-bodied and was just good coffee. Any coffee drinker will know exactly what I mean when I say that. We also bought desserts, and even though we started out with them on a plate at our table, after our meals, we went back to the counter to retrieve a to-go bag to take them home for later. And when later came, we ate them – for sure. No forgetting about a cherry tart and a cinnamon roll. They made the perfect snacks while watching our current series on Netflix. The St. Louis Bread Co. first opened in Kirkwood, Missouri in 1987. It was later purchased by Au Bon Pain Co., and in 1997 the company name was changed to Panera, though it still operates as The St. Louis Bread Company in the greater St. Louis area. Through the years, as it grew, the company expanded on its idea of healthy eating, adding things like calorie counts on the menu board, before it was common to do so, eliminated foods with artificial preservatives, flavors or sweeteners and colors from artificial sources, and began to use poultry and pork raised without antibiotics. The company has instituted many other clean food initiatives, and I like that, too. Anytime you can go somewhere you feel like the food is a healthier alternative is a plus in my book.
