Kindred spirits By David Blanchette For The Edge

GODFREY — Two Madison County residents hope that if something goes bump in the night, it’s your finger hitting the remote to watch them on the A&E Networks series “Ghost Hunters.” Best friends and Godfrey, Illinois neighbors Brian Murray and Richel Stratton are regulars on the famed paranormal investigation series that has returned to television

with new episodes airing every Wednesday evening. The two are long-time members of Riverbend Paranormal and have done their own ghost and haunting investigations for years. But they’ve hit the big time on the TV show that started the nationwide obsession with researching the unexplained. “It’s cool, it’s awesome, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I’m

grateful for it,” said the 30-year-old Stratton. Murray and Stratton had tried for more than a year to get on one of the paranormal investigation television shows. They had done a series of

interviews with producers via Skype, an online, two-way video communication service. Then one night Murray received a call from Pilgrim Media, the producer of numerous reality shows, asking if he

wanted to interview for one of their productions. After two Skype interviews the producers asked if Murray if he could recommend another Riverband Paranormal team member, and he gave them Stratton’s name. “They sent us to Los Angeles to do more interviews, two investigation nights, and to meet face-to-face with the production company owner,” the 43-year-old Murray said. “We ended up being lucky enough to be selected. The greatest thing for me is I get to work with my best friend on a television show.”

Murray and Stratton aren’t allowed to talk yet about the investigations they’ve done for “Ghost Hunters” because most of the episodes have yet to air. But they are free to discuss the way they approach each investigation, which is typically done for a client who thinks a place is haunted. “We will go through whatever it takes to make sure these people are safe, they understand what is going on in their homes,” Murray said. “We go in with the approach of trying to disprove things. But if we run into a situation where it is paranormal, we get to

the bottom of it and we teach these people how to understand and to deal with the phenomena.” Stratton’s approach is equally thorough. “We always try to look for the truth,” Stratton said. “We are open to it being paranormal, but we also have to rule out everything else to insure that we are getting correct answers for these clients. “We don’t want to say something is paranormal if we haven’t tried to debunk it or to find a logical explanation as to why things are happening,” Stratton said. “After we explain to them what is there, the majority of our clients feel way more comfortable and are OK with it.” Murray and Stratton are on the road for usually two weeks at a stretch filming the show, which makes things difficult because they both have families and children in Godfrey. “It’s hard because we are away from our families, but we are all very close so it’s like a family on the road,” Stratton said. “So when we are at home we miss our road family, and when we are on the road we miss our real family.” Murray’s two sons have accompanied him on Riverbend Paranormal investigations. Stratton’s two sons are also fascinated by the paranormal and think their mom being on a TV show is “awesome.” Murray began his journey into paranormal investigation at age 16 when he came face-toface with people standing

From that point on, I started researching everything that I could on it,” Murray said. “That experience still sticks with

me. “Entities and ghosts and such, they are people like we are, and it’s just an understanding of why they’re there, what they’re doing,” Murray said. “Most people are frightened of phenomena

like this because they simply don’t understand what’s going on.” Stratton’s paranormal experience started at age 8. “I woke up and I saw someone standing at the foot of my bed. I

told my mom and sister about it and they didn’t necessarily believe me,” Stratton said. “But then the next night my sister had the same thing happen to her. So my sister and I started getting into the paranormal as a hobby, and later we ended up joining Riverbend Paranormal.” Alton has been billed as the nation’s most haunted city. Both Murray and Stratton, now veterans of the nation’s most popular paranormal investigation show, emphatically agree with that assessment. “Absolutely. I’ve been investigating Alton for more than 20 years and by far, Alton has been the one spot where I continue to get results,” Murray said. Murray is a former U.S. Marine who currently works as a contractor in the Riverbend area. He uses his knowledge of buildings and plumbing to help debunk things that people may think have supernatural causes. Stratton is a dental hygienist and, just like she does in her profession, she uses a meticulous approach to each paranormal investigation. “Ghost Hunters” team leader and executive producer Grant Wilson is thrilled to have the two Godfrey residents on the show. “Brian and Richel are both wonderful people — fun, adventurous and real. Together, they make up the adventure team,” Wilson said. “They are willing to go and do anything that is needed to find answers.” “Brian’s construction knowledge and Richel’s

ability to connect the dots are invaluable when it comes to doing a thorough investigation,” Wilson said. “Also, Richel being a mother and Brian being a Marine really helps us connect to any entities that might be trying to connect with us.” “Ghost Hunters” introduced the world to the field of authentic paranormal investigation 15 years ago and ran for 11 seasons. It has been brought back this year for 20 new episodes with Wilson, one of the original team leaders, and a group of professional ghost hunters who use their decades of field experience to investigate hauntings across the country. The team uses forensic experts, historical records and new technology to help explain supernatural phenomena. New episodes aired at the end of last month. A Sept. 4 episode featured investigations in Hanover, Pennsylvania, and St. Augustine, Florida, during which — according to the show’s promoters — “Brandon (another team member) and Brian find themselves stalked by an invisible creature.” “I want people to watch the show and get past the point of being scared and get to the point where they can understand what’s going on and open more doors for paranormal investigators,” Murray said. Stratton wanted to give a shout-out to her hometown. “We are proud to say we are from Godfrey, and I hope we make them proud of us,” Stratton said.

Dreamy, confident shows mark London Fashion Week

By GREGORY KATZ Associated Press

the models also broke with tradition by smiling at the audience, and one blew a kiss to a friend near the end of the show. It added to the celebratory feel.

LONDON — Fashion devotees basked in sunny weather and strong, sometimes whimsical collections as London Fashion Week neared its climax Sunday with runway shows by Roland Mouret, Victoria Beckham, Simone Rocha and others throughout the city. A fleet of black chauffeured Mercedes whisked VIPs from venue to venue, but those who preferred to walk saw the British capital at its best, with glimpses of the street style that helps give London its credibility in the fashion competition with Paris, New York and Milan. Two days of shows remain, with Burberry and Christopher Kane on tap. ROLAND MOURET’S COLLECTON FULL OF OPTIMISM, DESPITE WOES Roland Mouret’s spring 2020 collection was inspired by his observation of a worrying symmetry between New York in the ‘80s, enamored of its own affluent progressiveness while on the verge of bankruptcy, and today’s social, environmental and political turbulence. “It was a time when people were dressing up amazingly while people were dying in the street. Now we have the same kind of interaction through our media. You go from the new launch at Selfridges and the next day there’s someone dying,” he said after the show in a rarely seen courtyard at the Royal Academy of Arts. Despite that bleak starting point, his show was full of optimistic, even dreamy colors cut in relaxed silhouettes, with lots

STILL BUZZING ABOUT NAOMI CAMPBELL’S GALA Much of the buzz Sunday focused on the success of Naomi Campbell’s Fashion for Relief gala the night before, which continued for hours after the late-night show with a dinner in the heart of the British Museum. Campbell has become a master at organizing big, complex events for her charity efforts, and this was no exception. She managed to procure one of the most prestigious sites in London and filled it with a glamorous crowd. She even returned to the runway, proving without a doubt she can still model any time she chooses. Models walk the runway at the Fashion For Relief charity event in central London, Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019. (Photo by Vianney Le Caer/Invision/AP) of shimmering sequins. The designer, who made his name with the figure-hugging Galaxy dress he debuted in 2005, and which is still in production today, sent out a collection that nodded to the ‘80s via soft tailoring (a revolutionary concept led by Giorgio Armani and made famous by Richard Gere in “American Gigolo”), wide shoulders and relaxed American sportswear staples. Those were reframed by Mouret as a low-slung blue sequin skirt worn with a white blouse and a rope belt that looked like it was filched from the nearest yacht.

The wolves of Wall Street were alluded to through the corporate appeal of checked suits, the double-pleated fronts on gorgeously fluid wide-legged trousers and stock broker-approved wide lapels that were deployed across jackets and coats. The motif especially stood out on an oyster sequin blazer with a contrasting blue lapel, which was teamed with a blush pink sequin skirt and a white bohemian blouse. SIMONE ROCHA SHOWS SERENE, OFFBEAT COLLECTION Simone Rocha continues to impress and draw new admirers as her collections grow in sophistication without sacrificing the look that has made her unique. Her color palette is simple: white and blue, white and red, white and black, but the embroidery and layering are remarkable. The models’ hair seemed sculptural, adding texture and depth to the outfits, as did the elaborate braided straps to some of the handbags, which were similar to detailing on various outfits. Rocha also is improving her staging. With her designer father, John Rocha, watching from the front row, the show unspooled with a certain dignity and serenity, the models walking slowly in a circle on the stage of the Alexandra Palace, a 19th century landmark in north London. Rocha continued what has become her tradition: employing some older models and some who were not rail-thin. Some of

EMILIA WICKSTEAD PAYS TRIBUTE TO LOUISA MAY ALCOTT Emilia Wickstead paid homage to Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel “Little Women” for spring 2020, a timely reference given an upcoming film directed by Greta Gerwig which stars Emma Watson as Meg and Saorise Ronan as the headstrong Jo March. Debussy’s soothing “Arabesque No. 1. Andantino con moto” played as Wickstead’s guests climbed the stairs to the nosebleed section of the Royal Albert Hall, setting the tone for an elegant collection that ran the gamut from poised sophistication to joyful exuberance and sensual femininity. There was a focus on volume, with bunches of fabric at the back of dresses echoing the bustles prevalent in Alcott’s time. One jumpsuit had a crisp collar and midriff cutout placed to accentuate a high waistband. Another dress had wide cuffed sleeves and panels reminiscent of 19th century shirt bibs. The palette of saccharine pinks, yellows, lavender, and tangerine was sharpened by no-nonsense red and black, while a print offering was comprised of delicate hand-painted blue roses imposed on a mint color. Hats, a big motif in the novel, were used to dramatic effect, especially one wide black visor-like piece that was perched and worn with a slim cap-sleeved black dress with a sternum-exposing cut-out.

Women’s Hall of Fame inducts Sotomayor, Fonda, Allred

By CAROLYN THOMPSON Associated Press

Harvest FESTIVAL Presents:

Come Join us Friday, September 27th from 5-7 PM for Festivities & Fun! It is that time of year again! We will have: • FOOD • DRINKS • MUSIC • FACE PAINTING • BALLOONS • SILENT AUCTION • BAKE SALE/CAKE WALK 401 St. Mary Dr. • Edwardsville, IL

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, actress Jane Fonda and attorney Gloria Allred were among the inductees at the National Women’s Hall of Fame on Saturday. The Class of 2019 inducted into the hall in upstate New York also included activist Angela Davis , attorney Sarah Deer, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , retired Air Force fighter pilot Nicole Malachowski, the late artist and suffragist Rose O’Neill and the late U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter of New York. Composer Laurie Spiegel was honored for her electronic music compositions, and molecular biologist Flossie Wong-Staal for work that helped prove HIV is the cause of AIDS. Davis, a onetime leader of the Black Panther Party and the Communist Party USA who was prosecuted for her alleged involvement

in a 1970 courthouse shootout and ultimately acquitted, said her activism was not hers alone. “At each significant turning point in my life, when I was introduced to the world of progressive political activism, anti-racist prison abolition struggles, when I myself was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List and ended up spending two years in jail and on trial, when I became involved in many international solidarity efforts, intersectional feminist movements, I’ve always been one of many,” Davis said in accepting her award. “My own consciousness has been enabled always by shared endeavors and collective consciousness.” The hall in Seneca Falls, where a landmark U.S. women’s rights convention took place in 1848, doesn’t identify a theme when it calls for nominations, said induction chairwoman Sujatha Ramanujan. But she said sometimes a theme emerges, as it has this year, that reflects the political

and social mood of the country. “It shows up in the nominations because we ask the general public,” Ramanujan said, “and in a time when women are feeling like their voices need to be heard, they’re nominating women whose voices were loud.” She pointed particularly to Allred and her work as an advocate for women who have been abused and to Deer, a Native American activist focused on victims’ rights. All the living honorees accepted invitations to the induction weekend events. “I feel this connection, and I always have felt it — even before I knew I was going to be inducted — to the women’s rights pioneers who came before me,” said Allred , who at 78 continues to represent accusers in high-profile sexual misconduct cases including those against the late financier Jeffrey Epstein and movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. “We still have more

battles to fight in this war against women,” Allred, citing the decades-long push to ratify the proposed Equal Rights Amendment to the constitution, said in a telephone interview. Fonda’s selection led the Seneca Falls town supervisor to threaten to pull funding from the site. Greg Lazzaro wrote in a resolution, which did not pass, that Fonda’s activism during the Vietnam War “brought divisiveness to our country.” The actress drew bitter criticism after being photographed atop an anti-aircraft gun during V a 1972 visit to North B Vietnam, a moment she has said she regrets. “There’s always going to be dissent,” Ramanujan said, recalling past pickets and protests, including surrounding the induction of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger in 1981. She said that Fonda is being honored for a lifetime of achievement and that the hall stands by the selection.

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington Experts tell us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When you “break” your “fast,” it’s important to eat something nutritious. But sometimes that’s easier said than done. When you’re rushing to get ready for work, other family members are in a hurry, too, and cooking a meal just doesn’t seem to fit Vicki into the list Bennington of priorities. You can grab a yogurt or granola bar, or sometimes, just a cup of coffee, but this recipe for individual egg soufflés that a good friend shared with me, offers nutrition and taste, and is quick to prepare. The key is that they are prepared ahead of time, stored in a sealed container — or even a plastic zipper bag — and you just pop them in the microwave for about 30 seconds, and away you go. Individual Egg Soufflés 9 eggs 2/3 cup milk Ham chunks Salt and pepper Cheese (of your choice) Spray muffin pan cups with Pam or use cupcake liners. Beat eggs and milk in a large bowl. Add other ingredients (except cheese), and pour into

muffin cups. Sprinkle cheese of your choice (I used mozzarella) on top. Bake at 350 F for 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool, then place in container or bag and store in the refrigerator for a quick and hearty breakfast – on the go. They are dense enough that you can literally, hold them in your hand and take a bite. Voila! It solves one problem that has been a struggle for a long time. And really, the possibilities are endless. This is just a basic recipe for the soufflés – and they are quite good – but use your imagination or add your individual likes to create different varieties that will keep everyone interested. Instead of ham, add

Movie review: ‘The Farewell’ hits on family truths, regardless of culture By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge Authenticity means a great deal to me when I go to the movies. Fortunately, we live in an age where most mass-marketed motion pictures — even the loud, F/X heavy ones — try to deliver a truthful story without being cartoonish in the way of, say, a 1950s MGM musical. Don’t mistake authenticity for style; the two can be mutually exclusive and each has a great value. In a stroke of good luck, I found “The Farewell,” one of the most significant foreign films of the year and its authentic streak is long and deep. It’s an emotionally-charged, funny family film that played well to limited audiences. “The Farewell” features Billi (Nora Lum, known professionally as Awkwafina, a musician-actress mostly known for comedy) as a NYC-raised Chinese student who must deal with being the only member of her extended family to feel differently on a very compelling issue than everyone else she loves. Billi’s grandmother, Nai Nai (Shuzhen Zhao), who lives in Changchun, has recently been diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 lung cancer. She’s been given only a few weeks to

From left, Awkwafina, Tzi Ma, Diana Lin, Lulu Wang, and Aoi Mizuhara attend “The Farewell” LA premiere presented by Sundance Institute and hosted by Acura at The Theatre at Ace Hotel on June 26, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images for Sundance )

live by her doctors, but in keeping with the prideful, emotionally complicated culture of China, no one tells Nai Nai this. She’s left to believe it’s just

remnants of pneumonia from the previous winter. Little Nai Nai (Lu Hong), Billi’s great-aunt, controls the tide of disinformation and will care for

her older sister during the last days of her life. The timing of illness is never convenient, but Billi’s cousin (Han Chen) is set to marry his Japanese

girlfriend one week after the diagnosis is first given. The occasion is used to gather all of Billi’s clan together for a chance to say good-bye to Nai Nai

without actually saying “good-bye.” As the greatest threat to revealing the awful truth see FAREWELL, Page 20

FAREWELL Continued from Page 19 to the family’s matriarch, Billi is kept at arms’ length by her quiet father (Tzi Ma), frazzled mother (Diana Lin), and kindly uncle (Yongbo Jiang). In fact, they don’t initially invite Billi on the trip and are a little miffed when she foots her own airline fee to turn up on Nai Nai’s doorstep a few days later. In many one-on-one debates, all of which are more serious and dramatic than any of the hilarious group scenes, Billi tries to broker everyone to the side of honesty and revelation. She is thwarted again and again and always with reasons good enough to give her inklings of doubt. It’s all very weighty and a remarkable

change of direction from what we’ve seen from Awkwafina in her two previous feature roles (“Ocean’s 8” and “Crazy Rich Asians”). She also hesitates to bring Nai Nai down when she’s so excited about the wedding reunion, with a real zest for life that Zhao, a first time actress, brings to the role. Zhao’s senior citizen take on tai-chi stole the show for me. Director Lulu Wang based this movie on her short story that tells about her own life growing up between two different cultures and seeing what great distance did to her relationship with her sick grandma. Home video footage plays just before the closing credits showing the two during a similar “farewell.” I found this movie to have the subtle truth to

it that all great family dramedies do. Not being Asian, I have to prescribe my own values to the morality tale, but the dynamic between Billi and Nai Nai is so sweet and so endearing that it made me appreciate the relationship I have with both of my own grandmothers all the more. Sure, Nai Nai, calls her “stupid child” when she’s flabbergasted by Billi, but it’s a nickname of good intention. Besides, most of the time she’s stuffing her with an endless buffet of delicious cuisine, bemoaning her skinniness and trying to put a few dollars in her hand. “The Farewell” runs 98 minutes and is rated PG for thematic material, brief language, and some smoking. I give this film three stars out of four.

Our hearing healthcare experts are dedicated to providing the best patient care for our community. We work closely with each patient’s physician to ensure comprehensive treatment. We will send hearing evaluation results to any physician designated by our patient.

Your results belong to you. We will provide a copy of your diagnostic results to you, upon request.

Live Local, Care Local. There is no need to go out of town for hearing healthcare. We have three convenient locations and every member of our team is committed to providing the best care possible for every person that walks through our door.

We provide comprehensive audiological evaluations, tinnitus evaluations, and individualized treatment plans.

We utilize real ear verification measurements to guarantee your hearing aids are properly prescribed to your hearing loss.

No gimmicks, no pressure, and no hidden fees.

We want to thank our patients for voting for us to win the Best of the Best in the Riverbend Area. We truly appreciate the opportunity to serve our community.
