HOME of COOL:
House of Miles East Saint Louis ‘Constantly Operating On Love’ By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com
EAST ST. LOUIS — The house that HOME built gives insight into the formative years of one of America’s jazz greats and invites guests to the Illinois home where he grew up, chose the trumpet and formed his first band. The House of Miles East Saint Louis (HOME) — a public museum and an educational enrichment center for youth ages 10 to 18 — is a nonprofit 501(c)3 that provides educational opportunities at the restored East St. Louis childhood home of musician and artist Miles Davis. Knighted in 1991, Davis also received the highest honor from the French Foreign Legion. Davis picked up the trumpet in secondary school. “His band teacher, Elwood Buchanan, told him to stop trying to sound like everyone else; you are good enough to have your own style,” HOME President Lauren A. Parks said. “Miles stated that he and his friends practiced ‘very loudly’ in this basement. We are looking forward to opening that level to the public.” Davis was born May 26, 1926, in Alton, Illinois, but spent his early years to about age 18 at 1701 Kansas Ave. — now honorarily named Miles Davis Way. HOME opened three years ago and has grown significantly since then, now hosting a revolving art gallery, public tours by appointment, field trips, global visitors, cohesive educational enrichment programs, which includes the following: history, culture, art, music, organic gardening and healthy living, and the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum, which is sponsored by Purina. Davis’ former boyhood home underwent extensive gutting and renovation through HOME, founded by Parks, an East St. Louis native who has used her personal funds for every aspect of this project endeavor. “I tell people, ‘You can Google Miles Davis, view pages upon pages,’ but what we want to also focus on is where Miles came from, before moving to New York in 1944 from this community that helped to make Miles who he is, and learning about him before he left the nest,” said Parks, an education specialist with a bachelor’s in psychology and master’s in education administration. Parks works closely with her HOME partner, Vice President of Urban Planning Jas Gary Pearson. She began working with Pearson when she returned to her hometown in 2006, upon completing an occupational
contract in Hawaii. “We want to share stories as told to us by people who knew young Miles — the Miles who is pictured here with his high school band; the Miles pictured on the antique organ as a teenager. You can’t always find that by Googling,” Parks said. The HOME nonprofit acquired the Davis property in 2011. Davis’ brother, Vernon, now deceased, was the last Davis relative that lived in the house. Renovations began in 2015, and HOME opened as a public space offering educational enrichment programming in 2016. “We’ve kept everything as original as possible, from the hardwood floors in the four main rooms and knotty pine walls in the entryway with the wood ceiling,” Parks noted. “We’ve just washed the wood with some good ol’ Murphy’s Oil and provided lots of TLC — Tender Loving Care.” Parks and Pearson’s intention is to present See COOL, Page 7
For The Edge HOME opened three years ago and has grown significantly since then, now hosting a revolving art gallery, public tours by appointment, field trips, global visitors and numerous youth enrichment programs, involving history, culture, art, music, fitness and nutrition.

COOL Continued from Page 5 an authentic, realistic feel of the the childhood experience of Miles. “We want HOME to feel symbolically like home,” Pearson said. HOME’s artifacts include rare photographs, such as that of Davis and his oldest brother, Vernon, in marching band and on a porch with his siblings and other family members. None of HOME’s displays are behind glass or out of reach. One of Pearson’s former students, Simeon Moore, 30, constructed the Davis house’s few cosmetic changes, such as a pair of wall shadow box insets. Pearson served as a mentor to Moore in high school, where Pearson said Moore “came only to eat,” having little interest in academics. “He did all the walls,” Pearson said of the now licensed master carpenter and ultimately one of the best students in the Emerson Park Development Corporation/Tomorrow’s Youth Build charter school program. “That’s how you find your passion,” Pearson said. “Dabble and try everything. If you have an interest in painting, you could do graphic design on the computer. We try to tap into those interests with our students.”

Ash recently had an art show at HOME’s gallery. Featured artists typically sell out of their work there. East St. Louis High School students also display artwork at HOME, which partners with the East St. Louis School District. There is an upcoming event planned for this month. In the early ‘80s, the school district dedicated the Miles Davis Elementary School, now closed and in the process of being purchased by the Gateway Pet Guardians ,which will offer full-service animal care services. When the school closed, the district gave a wall-size tapestry of one of Davis’ sketches to HOME, where it now hangs; it also at one time hung in Davis’ New York apartment. Later, Davis and his then-wife, Cicely Tyson, gifted the tapestry to the Miles Davis school at its dedication, which the couple attended. Not only did Davis enjoy painting, becoming a prolific visual artist, but also boxing. Another East St. Louis district graduate, Vinnie Winters, who graduated in 2016, also made a HOME connection. Taking in the Oscars and a ‘fight’
Despite my best efforts, Oscar Quest 2018 ended unfulfilled. I left five movies on the table and yet I feel emboldened by the campaign. I crushed my final week with a solid half-dozen of the nominated films (two of which won awards) and even learned about a new web service called Kanopy that provides a lot of free online content for libraries, both public (Edwardsville’s) and those attached to higher-learning institutions (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s). If only the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) had learned as much. Over a 197-minute broadcast of the Oscars, the AMPAS awarded 24 little gold statues and, I thought, the night went over quite swimmingly until right near the very end. Stars dazzled (Amandla Stenberg in beaded fringe was “Best Dressed”) and no one really noticed that an official host was missing. After the Kevin Hart drama, I tweeted my own pitch to the AMPAS governorship in a bid to see if they’d like my charming “everyman” approach to the job. I even offered to do it for free, but they were unresponsive. Instead, a more diverse selection of presenters did an enviable job keeping the train rolling. Amy Poehler and her group of besties are always welcome at an awards show. Bar-
Robert Viglasky/Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures via AP Dwayne Johnson, left, and Vince Vaughn in a scene from “Fighting with My Family.” bra Streisand seemed convincing in her praise of both “Black KkKlansman” and Spike Lee. I liked Julia Roberts’ megawatt smile better that night than I ever have before. But the best, and I mean best, gag of the night was watching a very over-dressed Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry present the costuming achievement award while buried in the fashions of all five nominees. McCarthy may have been a dramatic acting nominee that night, but her “bunny couture” and subtle puppeteering reminded everyone why she’s a comedy icon.
And “Green Book,” it’s a perfectly enjoyable film that I laughed my way through. It may or may not be a “Best Picture,” but this was a crowded field of eight second-tier nominees that would all have ruffled a feather on some level had they been named. The Academy made some serious missteps in the last 12 months and the bad optics of that aren’t lost on even me, an Oscar obsessive who will keep watching, especially as their new L.A. museum is set to open later this year. I even managed to get to a new movie before the hoopla, after forgetting my wallet
and having to rely on my backup title. “Fighting with my Family” is an engaging and, at times, moving account of a young British girl’s rise from obscurity to WWE Main Roster superstardom. Executive Producer and co-star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson brings us along for the ride, back to his roots by giving visibility to Saraya Knight (Florence Pugh) who will go on to become Diva Champion wrestler Paige (after taking her stage name from everyone’s least favorite Halliwell sister). The titular family with whom she fights are an aggressive hustling pair of entertainer parents (Nick Frost and Lena Headey) and a more talented older brother named Zak (Jack Lowden), who isn’t selected for the elite training program run by a subdued and utterly adorable Vince Vaughn. As it turns out, this is the best kind of Vince Vaughn. “Fighting with my Family” is a great family movie, especially if anyone in your family has any love of wrestling (Seamus and Big Show make cameo appearances). It’s a little cloying at times, but I highly recommend a dose of cinema like this every year to rinse the Oscar taste from one’s mouth. Prestige movies are awesome, but they’re not always real or wholesome. This one taps both of those veins. “Fighting with My Family” runs 108 minutes and is rated PG-13 for crude and sexual material, language throughout, some violence and drug content. I give this film two stars out of four.

Enrichment also includes a leadership piece, which uses a holistic, integrated approach. The action plan involves “battle buddies,” in which middle school students work with high school mentors, who in turn are working with college-level peers, who work with mentors who become young ambassadors then senior ambassadors, thereby helping to feed HOME’s overall programs. “Young people are important to each other,

Miles Davis is one of the most innovative, influential and respected figures in the history of music. He is credited with changing the course of music four-to-five times and has been at the forefront of jazz for decades, setting trends and exploring musical styles from bebop through cool jazz, fusion and funk.

In turn, those items are distributed to in-need shelters during colder months. “The kids love that because they like to count and sort the socks,” said Parks, who started the program because a shelter director mentioned to Parks that socks were the most requested and needed item for his particular shelter. “Our goal is to collect as many socks as possible, to distribute to as many local shelters as possible because we want to spread the love.” HOME often uses the acronym COOL, meaning “Constantly Operating On Love.” “We love teaching, educating and operating on COOL, which ties back into Miles,” said Pearson, who has a bachelor’s in criminal justice/psychology and a master’s in criminology. East St. Louis has numerous wonderful heroes and ‘she-roes,’ and many live here,” Lauren Parks said. “Just to have another avenue to share our culture and our history, the arts, education, is so very exciting and I’m honored to be able to do this. We thank the Miles Davis estate, who sought to donate this property to a nonprofit. We are eternally grateful to the numerous volunteers and donors who expressed their gratification for this project, as well as financial supporters.” Anyone who wishes to donate to House of Miles East Saint Louis can mail donations to P.O. One stop for top-notch media:
Photos, video, lighting and more make event planning easier
By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com ST. LOUIS — Planning a dream wedding or event should be simple and fun, and having all of your media services under one roof makes planning easier on you. “Our job is to make this easy for you, your job is to enjoy the party,” Complete Weddings and Events’ owner Dan Sims said. Complete Weddings and Events, specializing in off-site wedding events, such as at Our Lady of the Snows or Forest Park, is a leading provider of event and wedding photography, videography, lighting, DJ services and photo booth rental. Whatever you need to set the stage for a phenomenal special event, Complete Weddings and Events can do. With
talented wedding photographers, videographers and DJs, they provide expert photos, high-quality video, timeless music and unforgettable events at different price points. “There’s room for all budgets. We are a one-stop shop for all event media needs. You can use just one, two or all that we offer,” Sims said. “Whatever you need, we can help you.” Sims has 35 years of experience in event media planning, starting part time as an emcee and deejay for the Complete Weddings and Events franchise headquarters while attending the University of Nebraska. “Back in college, I thought about what I wanted to do when I grew up,” he recalled. “After graduation, I bought a franchise of Illinois and Missouri. I love this to this day.
I pinch myself every day. It’s positive, it’s fun. I love hearing brides’ stories. The best is when they pick up flash drives and video and everyone is so excited. I love it.” Wedding videos have evolved to be artistic cinematic short films. “Less is more, with cuts and fades, set to music,” Sims explained. “Those eighties and nineties’ wedding videos were two hours long. They gave video a bad name. But brides can get everything we shoot, all the raw footage, so they can see everything. The bride is so engaged with guests and the event, they miss stuff. More times than not, the number one regret is not having a video.” Complete Weddings and Events can also provide double photographers and two videographers. Sims has noticed more couples
putting more of their budgets into photos and video. Complete Weddings and Events are not wedding coordinators, but the professionalism and knowledge of its staff helps couples coordinate, particularly during receptions. “We help move things along so the first dance isn’t at 9 p.m., for instance during a reception that’s from 7 to 11 p.m.,” he explained. “We help our brides’ dreams come true, try to help them to coordinate and give them suggestions on media.” With same-day editing, videographers can take raw footage, edit it on a laptop and show video on a 10-foot screen right before dinner is served.

ONE STOP Continued from Page 14 Sims emphasized that the deejay does make a difference. “Hosting is part of our deejays’ jobs,” Sims said. “We host the event, check with caterer to see if the food’s ready; if we need the bride for a bouquet toss, we find the bride and make sure she’s ready before we announce it. A good DJ can really bring energy to the room. The number one thing, I find, is to get a good DJ. They are in constant contact with the important people and — we have the microphone.” Photo booths also are popular. “The booths are real fun, too,” Sims noted. “Back in the day, you had to come up with some idea to get goofy pictures, like the throwaway cameras on tables. No one used them. Now we have a six-foot, enclosed booth, where no one can see you. You can get PG-13 photos and it’s all automated.” Sims bought his franchise in July of 1984 and purchased the St. Louis franchise’s building six years ago. He completely gutted and renovated the spacious building to invite clients in and make it easier to coordinate needs all under under one roof. The modern design and tasteful interior reflects Sims’ Complete Weddings and Events aesthetic. St. Louis’ Complete Weddings and Events consistently
receives the highest customer evaluations in the whole franchise and numerous awards overall. “We’re very proud of that,” Sims said. Complete Weddings and Events, located at 11100 Olive Blvd., in St. Louis, coordinates events in all of Illinois and eastern St. Louis. “Glam is trending, big time. We are doing a lot of uplighting and backdrops,” Sims noted about recent events. And, Complete Weddings and Events has the know-how and equipment to create singular, spectacular uplighting and backdrops with 40 sets of between its headquarters in St. Louis and an office in Central Illinois. For its photo booths, either fish-eye or traditional, the company supplies props. It also supplies inflatables and has, of course, a disco ball, as Sims confirmed, “never goes out of style.” “We love the people with whom we work in Illinois. They really rock us,” noted Sims, giving shout outs to Edwardsville, Effingham, Breese, Staunton, Jerseyville and Aviston; Complete Weddings and Events also has worked on events in Illinois’ wineries and wine country. Complete Weddings and Events provides services for all occasions, including corporate events, schools, save the dates and engagement parties. Complete Weddings and Events’ business hours during which it schedules consultations and appointments are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Savvi Formalwear ensures fit, style for men
By Jill Moon ALTON — Savvi Formalwear at Alton Square Mall is more than part of a cooperative of the finest formal wear retailers in the world — it’s a singular destination for its service and staff. St. Louis’ Ann Rafferty, who also owns The Ultimate Bride in her hometown, owns 10 Savvi Formalwear locations, including Alton. The store’s manager, Amy Klaus, has led the tuxedo specialty retailer for 25 years; she’s also the district manager.
Savvi Formalwear also has the distinction as the only company that offers free groom’s “try-ons.” The retailer lets the groom pick out two tuxedo styles at a time, then a staff member will take the groom’s measurements and order those styles in his size.
A few things make Alton’s Savvi Formalwear special. It owns all of its tuxedos, which means if you walked in one day and immediately needed to rent a tux, that you could have it the next day. Of course, Kraus recommends registering at least nine months to a year before a wedding date for the grooms’ and groomsmen’s tuxes. Measurements are needed six weeks before the event. Savvi also rents tuxedos for proms and other special occasions.
“So, he can see it on, before he makes his selection,” Klaus said. “Our theory is that brides get to try on wedding dresses, so the groom should get to try on his tuxedo before they make a decision.”
“We warehouse our tuxedos in the Loop in St. Louis. I could have a tuxedo here tomorrow,” Klaus said. “We’re the only one in the region that can do that. It’s one of our big benefits that we pride ourselves on.” Rental includes the coat, pant, shirt, vest, tie, studs, cuff links and shoes. Savvi Formalwear also sells tuxedos and suits. “We cater to the man. This is all I do, no dresses, so it’s a specialized service,” noted Klaus, who’s a certified formalwear consultant and re-certifies each year. Each staff member is required to certify, as well. Savvi’s Sure Fit policy promises that each customer’s tuxedo or suit fits or it’s free. Each store follows a proprietary fitting matrix to ensure customers look their best. Savvi Formalwear also gets in on wedding fun with its “money booth,” which it will bring to Hearst Illinois Media Group’s Modern Love Wedding Expo: An All Inclusive Wedding Event, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at the Meridian Ballroom, inside the Morris University Center on the Southern Illinois

University Edwardsville campus. “We bring the booth and a bride, mom or groom get in for twenty seconds and collects all the money they can and that amount comes off the cost of tuxedo rental per one wedding party,” Klaus explained. “It can apply to the groom’s rental, a groomsman’s rental or the bride and groom decide how they want to divide the money booth winnings among the wedding party.”

Grimm & Gorly’s father/son owners celebrating 20 years
The Savvi organization is collectively managed so that customers are seamlessly served across the United States and Canada. Rafferty serves on Savvi’s board of directors. To ensure the very best service for every customer, all locations are family owned and operated by members in their respective communities. And all locations are served by local warehouses so that tuxedos look their best when they are worn at an event. Savvi Formalwear’s franchise cooperative model allows it to realize large company benefits regarding such things as buying power, resource pooling and national branding, while simultaneously provides the exacting levels of customer service only possible with localized, entrepreneurial ownership. It is this combination of corporate-level management and innovation, combined with the passion and commitment of its store owners, that makes shopping at Savvi a singular and satisfying experience. Alton’s Savvi Formalwear hours are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 12 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Visit savviformalwear.com or call the Alton store at 618-465-1110 for more information. jill.moon@hearst.com BELLEVILLE — A father and son’s discovery of their shared serious passion started off in the most humorous ways. Grimm & Gorly Flowers & Gifts’ patriarch Jeff Bair, of Belleville, Illinois, worked retail for years, never having a thought about floral design until one day he had to think about it. As an area manager for Dillard’s, a day came upon him when he had to think about what he was going to do with cases upon cases of fresh flowers for Eternity’s 1980s’ fragrance launch at one of the department store chain’s locations.
Modern

SUNDAY, MARCH 10 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. ADMISSION IS FREE
“My boss was gone to open a store in Omaha and I had all these fresh flowers,” Bair recalled recently to The Edge. “I asked him what I should do and he said, ‘Do the best you can, enjoy and have fun!’ He comes back for the big launch and I thought, ‘Hey, I like this, I want to do this.’” That set Bair on a path that brought him to where he — and eventually his son, Zach Bair — is today. Jeff Bair began freelancing as a floral designer, providing bouquets and design for hundreds of weddings since the Eternity launch over the next 30 years. Grimm & Gorly provides complementary wedding consultations but requests to schedule by appointment. “We love doing weddings and want to give the time you deserve,” Bair said. “We don’t want anyone to ever feel like they’re pushed or rushed. “It’s not the amount of weddings we do, it’s about customer service and integrity that we put into the weddings that we do, the service and willingness to work with people,” he continued. “We’re trying to create floral designs that will last all day and longer. If we are allowed to do the best that we can do, it’s nature’s architecture. What you see is what you get with nature.” On one occasion, when Zach, 31, was 9 years old, the elder Bair had a wedding for which to provide his services at the Missouri Botanical Garden and took his son with him. The Christian/Jewish union incorporated a chuppah (pronounced HOOP-ah), which is a canopy under which a couple stand during their wedding ceremony, but the wind kept picking up that day, and the chuppah’s chances of staying put weren’t looking good.
Gorly Flowers and Gifts, at 324 E. Main St., which they bought from the previous owner, Paul Reis (pronounced RICE). Bair loves the process of creating from nature’s landscape. He particularly enjoys texture, dimension and plants that create movement, such as a cluster of berries and moss for depth. One of his favorite flowers is the scoop scabiosa, which blooms in lots of different colors. “It’s literally like a mini carnation, like a scoop of ice cream sitting on top of a cone,” he described. “There’s so many great natural things available to us today, that I don’t think in the past we knew we could use. When we start with a wedding or event, it’s a sea of buckets full of flowers and textures, and we all start doing our thing and the results are incredible.” Yet, Bair also is a traditionalist. “One of my very favorites, is the carnation. You can put them together in a cluster and they create the most beautiful ruffled look. Give someone a dozen carnations, they’ll love it,” said Bair, who recalls one of his favorite wedding bouquets being 18 white carnations bound together around the stems. He also praised his son’s aesthetic. Zach recently created an interpretive floral design for Saint Louis Art Museum’s annual Art In Bloom, a fine arts exhibit in which floral designers interpret works of art in a created floral bouquet. This year was Zach’s third consecutive to participate in the museum’s event. Grimm & Gorly also provides nature’s accents for embellishments in homes, works with several interior designers and carries greeting cards and gift items that are different from most gift stores. “It’s so fun,” Jeff said. “We’re not here just for ‘Get well’ and ‘Happy Birthday,’ we’re so much more.” Many items, including retail as well as floral stock, are locally sourced. Grimm & Gorly regularly acquires flowers, acclimatized to the Midwest temperatures, from a Vandalia farm. “We send a van to Vandalia and surroundings and load up with flowers. We buy them by the stem,” Bair explained. “If we can pull some of that into our wedding work, what a great bonus for our brides.”
on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 1 Hairpin Drive, Edwardsville, Illinois
“I asked Zach to lay down and hold that chuppah down and told him, ‘Don’t tell your mother,’” Bair fondly recalled. “He really learned by baptism by fire.”
The Grimm & Gorly name, though, is more than 100 years old. It started with the opening of Grimm & Gorly Florist on the Missouri side of the river by brothers Frank and Vincent Gorly and their cousin, who already owned the famous Belleville furniture store Hebrung and Grimm.

Undeterred by the experience, the younger Bair became intensely involved in his father’s craft by the time he was a senior in high school. Now, 22 years later, the Bairs are celebrating their 20th anniversary of owning Belleville’s Grimm &
The first Grimm and Gorly flower shop was located on Washington Street in Downtown St. Louis, once referred to as the “Hotel District.” The shop was so popular they decided to expand across the river to East St. Louis, Illinois, and opened up a

shop at the city’s 11th and State streets. The Gorly brothers’ sister, Josephine Gorly Stolle, managed the East St. Louis store, but after a few years, she gave the shop over to her daughter, Melba Stolle Klapp, of Belleville. Klapp was a friend of Reis, who managed a popular Belleville restaurant, Dutch Girl, later known as the historic Fischer’s Restaurant (closed in 2017). One evening, in 1955, while Klapp was dining at Dutch Girl, she asked her good friend if he would like to buy her flower shop, and he gladly took her up on the offer. He did so well with the East St. Louis shop that he opened a second floral business in Downtown Belleville. That shop became so popular that he closed the East St. Louis location and moved the Belleville shop to a larger location on East Main and Charles streets. Forty-five years later, Reis retired, selling his flower shop to Jeff Bair, who has carried on the tradition of artistic, beautiful floral arrangements and impeccable service that has made Grimm & Gorly a household name for more than a century. Four years ago, Jeff and Zach Bair added Pour @ 322 Coffeehouse adjacent to Grimm & Gorly, a destination for regulars and visitors to get their favorite coffee drink and hang out or take it to go. Jeff’s youngest son, Christian, 17, is a Pour barista. Pour also has an irresistible selection of baked goods, made in-house; ice cream dots; and, chocolate. “We want you to walk into Pour and feel like it’s a destination,” Bair said. “Pour has a conference room available for rent and the coffee shop can be used for private events, after regular business hour. We can accommodate up to 70 people and held a party for an 11 year old, as well as a party for an 80 year old. The staff does everything from setting up tables, providing linens and cleaning up after the party.” In January of 2011, the Bairs had the opportunity to purchase Troy, Illinois’ Rita Marie’s that, with the purchase, became Grimm & Gorly Too, at 203 Edwardsville Road. The Troy shop’s hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday. “Between two stores, we do a lot of weddings and our staff can handle it,” Jeff Bair said. Although this household name has expanded its territory and developed many new trades within its walls, the Grimm & Gorly name has only grown better to serve a wider population and capture the original essence that is Grimm & Gorly Flowers & Gifts. Belleville’s Grimm & Gorly’s hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Pour’s hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Visit grimmandgorly.com or call 618234-4455 for more information.

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington
Dreamy, Healthy Salmon
Still looking for meals that can make happy campers out of the healthy eating versions of my husband and I, we came upon a recipe for salmon in a magazine that our daughter bought for us, brimming full of “heart smart” dishes. I love recipe books, and magazines, too, but I don’t always carry through to actually making the recipes inside. I like looking at the photos, and sort of daydreaming how I will do them, but don’t always follow through. First, I look at the photos. Yes, that looks pretty and yummy. Then I look at the ingredients list. OK, the salmon salad recipe is a little long, but if you read closely, a lot of the items are staples that you already have in your kitchen. I’ve made it this far, so might as well keep reading. It didn’t seem too complicated, so I gave it a try. I think I have shared before that I am not a complicated cook. I’m a simple cook. If it gets too intricate, takes too long or necessitates a grocery list a mile long, I’m not doing it.
So … I was kind of proud of myself that I kept pursuing this one. It was very good. We have had it twice in as many weeks, and the fact that it is good for you and fulfills a portion of your weekly seafood BENNINGTON requirements are all bonuses that we love. And, it really wasn’t difficult at all. I even chopped and toasted the walnuts in the oven! Making your own vinaigrette does sound a little ambitious, but as is probably true for a lot of recipes, it seems harder than it is. But, you could substitute a low-fat raspberry vinaigrette dressing that you have purchased, and then it gets super simple. And considering the first time I made this, it was about 10 degrees outside, I baked the salmon in the oven instead of grilling, and it

was delicious. You do want to keep a close eye on it so it isn’t overcooked, but you don’t want salmon undercooked, either. It takes a little experimenting to get it just right in your oven — under your watch. Our fillets melted in our mouths, and we can’t wait until it is warm enough to try it on the grill. All in all, this is a recipe well worth the little bit of effort it takes, and it’s a staple that you can add to your weekly dinners without feeling guilty. Grilled Salmon Salad with Raspberry Vinaigrette 4 4- to 5-ounce fresh or frozen skinless
salmon fillets, 1-inch thick 4 cups fresh raspberries 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 6 cups fresh baby spinach 1/4 cup crumbled reduced-fat feta cheese 3 tablespoons chopped toasted walnuts Thaw salmon, if frozen. For vinaigrette, in a small pan, combine two cups of raspberries, the vinegar, sugar and mustard. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer uncovered for eight to 10 minutes or until berries have broken down and mixture is slightly thick. Cook slightly. Press through a fine-mesh sieve, discard seed. Stir in lemon zest and 1/8 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Cool completely. If desired, it can be thinned with a little water. Lightly coat fish with cooking spray and sprinkle with remaining salt and pepper. Grease grill rack. Grill salmon covered over medium for eight to 12 minutes or until salmon flakes, turning once. In large bowl, combine spinach and vinaigrette. Toss to coat. Divide mixture among plates. Top with salmon, remaining raspberries, cheese and walnuts. Calories: 288 Fat: 10 g. Singer Mayer launches foundation for veterans
By Mesfin Fekadu Associated Press John Mayer is launching a foundation focused on improving the health of veterans through scientific research. The Grammy-winning singer on Friday announced The Heart and Armor Foundation, which plans to focus on veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and meeting the emerging needs of women veterans. Though he publicly announced the foundation on Friday, Mayer has been working on the organization since 2012 alongside veterans, scientists and clinicians. "We're going to the public with things like published research papers and having raised enough money to really build some pilot programs. We have some really great data and ... we want it to be working first so that a lot of the questions were answered before we brought things to people by way of awareness," Mayer said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I think it just makes it that much more compelling and much more concise to bring it to people with the message being, 'Hey, this is not taking something that is zero to try to get it to five. This is something that is at 50 and we want to
get it to 100.'" Mayer, whose father was a World War II veteran, said part of the reason he started The Heart and Armor Foundation came after he visited the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in 2008. "Now this was with a friend of mine, so I was just plus one and nobody knew that the musician-guy was going. That gave me a really fluorescent look at what was going on in the barracks. It wasn't like they rolled out the red carpet for a celebrity, it was kind of a normal day," he said. "It was going to the wounded warrior barracks that I think changed me forever. It immediately showed me that my notion of what I think (are) the wounds of war are completely wrong. The way in which I was proven wrong was so compelling and fascinating and nuanced." The foundation has released 10 publications in peer-reviewed journals, developed an exercise-based intervention for PTSD and created a screening tool for nutrition in women veterans, among other accomplishments. "I've been in meeting after meeting where people ask, 'Where did you get the money to do this exercise study? Where'd you get the money?' I'm like, 'Well I'll tell you.' People are excited about it before I tell them John Mayer
did it," said Gerard Choucroun, executive director of The Heart and Armor Foundation. The foundation also has a goal of bringing the military and veteran communities closer together with outreach, events and conversation. An event will be held Friday night called "How War Changes Women, How Women Change War" that will stream live at Facebook.com/JohnMayer and Facebook.com/HeartAndArmor at 7 p.m. Eastern. "We think that there's something in here for everybody. This is not a quick black-andwhite conversation. This is a very nuanced conversation. There's a lot of an American identity going on in our relationship to vets. It's a relationship between the citizenry and the people who absorb and commit violence for that citizenry is such a rich, cultural ground dating back to the ancient Greeks that for us now, we want to be a part of that conversation. It goes much deeper than this set of wars that we're in now," Choucroun said. Owen Sweeney/Invision/AP John Mayer performs in concert during his "The Search for Everything Tour" in Philadelphia.

Frampton’s doctors hope to highlight rare disease
Associated Press Doctors at Johns Hopkins University hope to raise awareness and funds for research following famed guitarist Peter Frampton's announcement that he has a rare muscular disease. Frampton's physician, Lisa ChristopherStine, is the director of the Johns Hopkins Myositis Center. She tells The Baltimore Sun that she and Frampton spoke years ago about potentially becoming a voice for inclusion body myositis. Because the disease is rare, it's difficult to generate funding. The disease causes weakness in the legs, forearms and fingers. Its cause is still unknown. As it will eventually prevent Frampton from playing guitar, the 68-year-old is embarking on a farewell tour this summer. He's also launched a fund at Hopkins to which he'll donate $1 per ticket sold. Hopkins is also participating in two clinical trials for possible treatments.
Actor's foundation brings clean water to troubled community
FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Jaden Smith's foundation and a church are working to bring cleaner water to Flint, Michigan. The rapper's organization and First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church on Friday announced they'll deploy a mobile water filtration system known as "The Water Box" that reduces lead and other potential contaminants. The 20-year-old's JUST goods company collaborated with the church to design and engineer the system. He is the son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. The church has distributed over 5 million bottles of water to residents, but bottled water Andy Kropa | Invision (AP) donations are on the decline. According to a survey published by The Knot, in which it polled nearly 13,000 brides and grooms in 2016, the national average cost of a wedding is more than $35,000. Planning the ultimate wedding experience can be exhilarating, but the numbers can be overwhelming. Wedding loans can relieve some of that feeling.
