For The Edge
Participants in a recent Cupid’s Undie Run prepare for the start of the event in downtown St. Louis.
Cupid’s Undie Run serves as fundraiser For The Edge This February 10, runners in St. Louis will strip down to their skivvies and join more than 14,000 scantily clad do-gooders across the United States to raise awareness of neurofibromatosis (NF) through Cupid’s Undie Run. Recognized as the nation’s largest pantless party and mileish run for charity, Cupid’s Undie Run gives participants the opportunity to take off the usual weekend wear, show their support for the NF community and fundraise, with 100% of net proceeds funding research t h ro u g h t h e i r p a r t n e r, t h e Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF). This year, runners dressed in an array of costumes, will show off their undies to celebrate their fundraising efforts at Ballpark Village on Saturday, February 10, 2018. “For the last 6 years, our
enthusiastic runners, generous fundraisers and supportive community have made Cupid’s Undie Run the must-do event for the Valentine’s season,” said Todd Garten, St. Louis Race Director. “We appreciate the support of our volunteers, community and partners that help to make this event such a success each year.” St. Louis joined Cupid’s Undie Run in 2013 with over 250 runners. Last year, St. Louis raised more than $53,000 and saw more than 400 runners take to its streets. This year marks the 6th time the city of St. Louis will participate in the national event. We plan to have around 500 runners and hope to raise close to $60,000. “Who doesn’t want to say they’ve ran around Ballpark Village and Busch Stadium in just their skivvies,” asks Garten. “NF is relatively common, occurring once in every three
thousand people, but those who are impacted by NF didn’t have the support of a large national f u n d r a i s e r, ” s a i d B re n d a n Hanrahan, co-founder of Cupid’s Undie Run. “Over the years, Cupid’s Undie Run has filled that void and is probably the most fun you could have at a charity event.” The idea for Cupid’s Undie Run was born in February 2010 with the desire to help co-founder Chad Leather ’s little brother, Drew. Hanrahan, Leathers and Bobby Gill, set off on a mission to raise awareness and donations to CTF after Drew’s NF diagnosis. The friends rallied together to create an event that would support NF research while taking a nontraditional y e t f u n a p p ro a c h t o w a rd s fundraising. To date, St. Louis has helped Cupid’s Undie Run raise nearly $14.5 million that will one day #EndNF. Cupid’s Charity, a
nationally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit works closely with the hundreds of volunteers and supporters of Cupid’s Undie Run throughout the country. Participants fundraise to help children and adults from around the world who are fighting the fight against NF. The event is made possible by passionate, charitable cherubs willing to bare it all as well as the charity’s national partners, including TomboyX underwear, Bombas socks and Sidebar sunglasses. This year, Cupid’s Undie Run will take place in Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boise, Boston, Buffalo, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, C l e v e l a n d , D a l l a s , D e n v e r, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, Nashville, N e w Yo r k C i t y, O r l a n d o , Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, San Francisco, St. Louis, St. Petersburg, Virginia Beach,
Washington, D.C., and 17 cities in Australia. About Cupid’s Undie Run Cupid’s Undie Run is the nation’s largest pantless party and mile-ish run for charity to fund research through their partner, the Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF) to find effective treatments for the millions of people worldwide living with neurofibromatosis (NF). Held in more than 47 cities globally, the event combines a pre-race party, a one mile-ish undie run and an after-party and is made possible by Cupid Charities dba Cupid’s Charity, a nationally recognized 501(c) (3). In 2010, founders Brendan Hanrahan, Chad Leathers and Bobby Gill set off on a mission to raise awareness and donations to CTF after Chad’s brother ’s diagnosis of NF. To date, Cupid’s Undie Run has raised more than $14.5 million.

Do you suffer from ringing in the ears? Gateway Arch Park Foundation Better Hearing Clinic has the solution. launches new website
Expert Hearing Care You Can Trust!
While the previous site conveyed the CityArchRiver project and construction updates, the new site focusses on completed park spaces and how the public can enjoy and support the new Arch experience. Visitors can learn about the legacy of the historic CityArchRiver project on an interactive timeline. Popular features from the old website remain, such as the interactive webcams. “As we near the grand opening of the new park, museum, and visitor center, this new website shows the transformed and active Gateway Arch Park in exciting ways,” said Ryan McClure, director of communications and activation for Gateway Arch Park Foundation. “We want folks to see that this is their park to enjoy and use with many activities and events all year.” The website makes it easy for visitors to find events in the Gateway Arch Park area and find information on planning their own event – public or private. Visitors can also support the mission of the Gateway Arch Park Foundation by becoming a Gateway Arch Park Friend or shop for new merchandise on the Foundation’s online store – including two new t-shirts designed by STL Style House. In early 2018, the Foundation, working with the National Park Service, will launch a new section of the website featuring stories from the new Museum at the Gateway Arch, which will have a grand opening July 4, 2018.

Museum exhibit puts focus on Japanese prints The Saint Louis Art Museum in Forist Park is currently hosting Century of Japanese Prints in Galleries 234 and 235 of the Main Building. The event runs through Jan. 28. For more information, visit www.slam. org. Century of Japanese Prints presents a selection of the Museum’s finest examples of modern and contemporary Japanese prints from the 20th and 21st centuries, two thirds of which have never before been displayed at the Museum. Unfolding over 100 years, the works in the exhibition span new prints (shin hanga), creative prints (sosaku hanga), and postwar and contemporary prints. Commercially published new prints brought a modern sensibility to the traditions of ukiyo-e, “pictures of the floating world,” a category of woodblock prints and paintings that depict beautiful women, kabuki actors, landscapes, and scenes from
everyday life that flourished between the mid-18th and early 20th centuries. The 2016 acquisition “Tipsy,” a renowned image by artist Kobayakawa Kiyoshi (1899–1948), depicts a “modern girl”—Japan’s answer to the 1920s flapper. Artists of the creative print movement rejected the commercialism of ukiyo-e and new prints, and instead explored the potential of printmaking to be a medium of artistic expression equal to painting and sculpture. To assert complete creative authority over their works, many artists insisted on carving and printing their own designs, frequently resulting in a rough finish that celebrated the material qualities of the woodblock. Printmaking continued to flourish and diversify during the post-war period. Japanese artists found new patrons among members of the Occupation, participated in international juried exhibitions, travelled widely, and lived abroad.

“In the Fade”
QuickGlance Movie Reviews
It’s startling how few filmmakers have tried to tackle terrorism with anything beyond a standard procedural account. It’s less surprising that one of the few to really grapple with a response is Fatih Akin, the German-born filmmaker of Turkish descent, whose thorny, probing dramas traverse borders as a matter of course. His latest, “In the Fade,” is Germany’s Oscar submission and one of the nine films shortlisted for best foreign language film. It deservedly earned its star, Diane Kruger, the best actress award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. And like the best of Akin’s films (“HeadOn,” ‘’The Edge of Heaven”), it’s a muscularly lean and emotionally raw film. At turns a tragedy, a courtroom drama and a revenge thriller, “In the Fade” is a shapeshifting quest through a terrorist tragedy, as outraged as it is compassionate. Kruger, a native German acting in her first German film, plays Katja Sekerci. She lives in Hamburg with her husband Nuri (Numan Acar), who’s Turkish, and their five-year-old son Rocco (Rafael Santana). In the movie’s opening preamble, Nuri, clad in a white suit, is walked from his prison cell directly into his wedding with Katja. It’s the kind of incongruity Akin delights in. (His “HeadOn” fashioned a love story between a man and woman brought together by mutual suicide attempts.) The first notes of “My Girl” radiate while Nuri strides down a corridor of cheering male inmates. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some disturbing images, drug use, and language including sexual references.” RUNNING TIME: 106 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
“Paddington 2”
“Paddington 2 “ is that rare creation that somehow improves on its already charming predecessor. Maybe it’s the addition of Hugh Grant as a lunatic faded star desperate for some cash to get his one man show going, Brendan Gleeson as a moody prison chef named Knuckles McGinty, a totally random dance routine during the credits, or just the sheer earnestness of it all but “Paddington 2” is a total delight. P a u l K i n g re t u r n s a s d i re c t o r a n d c o - w r i t e r for the sequel which finds Paddington (voiced again by Ben Whishaw) living happily with the B r o w n f a m i l y, M a r y ( S a l l y H a w k i n s ) , H e n r y (Hugh Bonneville), Jonathan (Samuel Joslin), Judy (Madeleine Harris) and Mrs. Bird (Julie Walters). P a d d i n g t o n , t h ro u g h h i s P o l l y a n n a p o s i t i v i t y and Emily Post politeness, has turned their little candy-colored neighborhood, Windsor Gardens, into a friendly paradise. Paddington gets a mission when he spots a London pop-up book at an antique store that he thinks would be perfect to buy his Aunt Lucy (voiced by Imelda Staunton), who is still in Peru and has always dreamed of going to London (pretty thoughtful for an anthropomorphized bear). But, it’s expensive and he needs to get a job in order to afford it. It’s an easy set up for some hijinks as he tries and fails at a few things. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some action and mild rude humor.” RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
“The Commuter”
The tagline for the Liam Neeson Metro-North thriller “The Commuter” — “Lives are on the line” — feels like a missed opportunity. I would have gone with: “The quiet car is about to get loud.” It’s been ten years since Neeson’s unlikely reign as the movies’ best action hero began with “Taken” — the little Paris kidnapping that unlocked Neeson’s special set of skills. What has followed has been a decade of lean, blunt and glum thrillers (three “Taken” movies, “Non-Stop,” ‘’The Grey”) anchored by the looming and still quite potent presence of Neeson. Neeson has suggested that, at 65, he’s nearing the end of the line. So “The Commuter,” which reteams him for the fourth time with Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra, may be one of our last chances to see Neeson kick some butt. “The Commuter” rides very much the same rail as his previous movies with Collet-Serra; it’s a hostage crisis tick-tock that speeds straight ahead. Collet-Serra’s genre mechanics, stylized and sober, are efficient. His trains run on time, even if — especially in “The Commuter” — a rush-hour ’s worth of implausibility eventually wrecks the thrill. Neeson plays Michael McCauley, an ex-cop who has spent his last ten years as a life insurance salesman, commuting Monday through Friday into Grand Central from his family’s suburban home up the Hudson in Tarrytown, New York. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some intense action/violence, and language.” RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

Movies Grant elevates “Paddington 2” By LINDSEY BAHR Associated Press “Paddington 2 “ is that rare creation that somehow improves on its already charming predecessor. Paul King returns as director and co-writer for the sequel which finds Paddington (voiced again by Ben Whishaw) living happily with the Brown family, Mary (Sally Hawkins), Henry (Hugh Bonneville), Jonathan (Samuel Joslin), Judy (Madeleine Harris) and Mrs. Bird (Julie Walters). Paddington, through his Pollyanna positivity and Emily Post politeness, has turned their little candy-colored neighborhood, Windsor Gardens, into a friendly paradise. In a film that feels so effortless, this is a rare snag that’s a little forced and chaotic. Thankfully it’s all building to something better, which is not coincidentally related to the arrival of Hugh Grant. At a fair, Paddington meets the actor Phoenix Buchanan (Grant), who was once a star and has now been reduced to doing dog food commercials and takes an unusual interest in the pop-up book Paddington mentions he’s saving up for. One night Paddington notices a strange man breaking into the antique store that houses the coveted pop-up book, attempts to stop it and wrongly ends up
Associated Press
This image released by Warner Bros. Pictures shows the character Paddington, voiced by Ben Whishaw, in a scene from “ Paddington 2.” in prison. Pretty dark for a Paddington movie, sure, but King keeps it light and positive (this is perhaps the brightest and cleanest prison you’ve ever seen on screen). And Paddington quickly charms his fellow inmates and the grouchy chef who doesn’t know that Knuckles begins with a K and not an N. Grant seems to be having the most fun he’s had in years on screen as the overly theatrical villain, who debates his devious plans out loud with a room
full of costumed mannequins that he also provides the voices for (Hamlet and Scrooge among them). And there are some wonderfully fun digs at the egotism of actors throughout, including when Mrs. Bird explains that actors are “some of the most evil, devious people on the planet.” Sally Hawkins also gets a nice spotlight as the eager-to-believe matriarch who is compelling enough to make you really trust that she’s possibly gotten a lead from a newsstand parrot about who framed
Paddington. Is it too lame to get wrapped up in the messages in a kid’s film? “Paddington 2” has a lot of worthy ones — the importance of kindness, family, and, heck, even saving money to get a thoughtful gift for someone who means something to you. It is a cheerful, sweet movie, where there is no problem that a lovingly made marmalade sandwich won’t fix, and it’ll be sure to leave kids and adults smiling and even wiping a few tears away at the end.

Movies “The Post” has its moments By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge Here is my review of “The Post”: “Meryl Streep + Tom Hanks + Steven Spielberg defend the First Amendment through American History.” It’s just one little sentence. If you threw in a popcorn it would be a done deal for me at any point in my adult life. Having seen it, I can tell you it’s worth it for the gut-busting feeling of pride you’ll take with you on the way home from a cold, cold winter day at your favorite cinema. If anything, I found the movie to be astonishingly intimate and lacking the grand scale ambition of a premise that defines ‘marquee’ filmmaking. There’s no real explanation of this film’s plot that doesn’t begin to resemble a history lesson at some point. Kay Graham’s (Streep) family had owned and run our nation’s capital’s daily newspaper, The Washington Post, since the early 1930s. It was the widow’s late husband, Phil, who had been the driving force behind it until his suicide in 1963. During the middle
1960s - tumultuous times for Kay and the country - the Post danced about a public offering to infuse the paper with enough resources to remain viable when that industry first thought it was seeing hard times. It was in 1971 when the reporting of the “Pentagon Papers” led to one of the greatest Freedom of the Press stories to that point. Because of the bravery of Graham and her bulldog editor, Ben Bradlee (Hanks), truth was spoken to power and the Nixon Administration took one of the many powerful knocks that ultimately led to his resignation. A brief coda alluding to the Watergate scandal graces the end of the picture and brings full-circle the strength of this publication during the early 1970s, but that story was already told in a better film, “All the President’s Men”. he Pentagon Papers were lengthy academic reports of the involvement of the United States in Vietnam during the administrations of Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson. The report had been orchestrated to serve history years
later when our actions could be understood in the hindsight of Twentieth Century politics, but clearly showed meddlesome, illegal, and compromising activities that had been going on for decades. What wasn’t counted on was the whistle-blowing of Daniel Ellsberg (Matthew Rhys), a contractor with access to the report, who disapproved of the way Robert McNamara (Bruce Greenwood) was wrapping up the unwinnable war. There’s no salacious side plot involving Ellsberg’s therapist’s office break-in or anything overwhelming sinister about how he executed the leak. He simply smuggled out volumes of the report a few at a time until he could copy them and send them off to the New York Times. Yes, it was the Times that first broke this story. I’m sure they’d like their byline. The plot of “The Post” concerns the intersection of means and opportunity for Bradlee. A federal injunction had allowed them back in the reporting ballgame when the Times was stalled by the Supreme Court from continuing to run “national security
secrets”. In the interregnum, a Post investigator (a great Bob Odenkirk) had located Ellsberg and his copy of the study and were fighting in-house about if or how they should thumb their professional noses at the Court and run the story. The thick and meaty middle of this movie is the extraordinarily decisive attitude of Bradlee while he is given a never-ending parade of Devil’s advocates by the business officers of the Post (including an unrecognizable Bradley Whitford) while trying to align himself with Graham. Meryl Streep is oddly subdued in this picture, but no less a prime example of feminism than she’s been her whole career. If you don’t already know this great tale of our nation’s history, I encourage you to seek out Justice Hugo Black’s quotes about the burden of proof placed on our government when they try to block the press. It should make them always think twice. “The Post” runs 116 minutes and is rated PG-13 for language and brief war violence. I give this film three stars out of four.
Neeson rides again in “The Commuter” By JAKE COYLE Associated Press The tagline for the Liam Neeson MetroNorth thriller “The Commuter” — “Lives are on the line” — feels like a missed opportunity. “The Commuter” rides very much the
same rail as his previous movies with Collet-Serra; it’s a hostage crisis tick-tock that speeds straight ahead. Collet-Serra’s genre mechanics, stylized and sober, are efficient. His trains run on time, even if — especially in “The Commuter” — a rushhour’s worth of implausibility eventually wrecks the thrill. Neeson plays Michael McCauley, an ex-cop who has spent his last ten years as a life insurance salesman, commuting Monday through Friday into Grand Central from his family’s suburban home up the Hudson in Tarrytown, New York. The movie’s clever overlapping opening montage shows the repetition of his days, begun every day with 1010 Wins on the radio, a ride from his wife to the train station and the crowded but solitary walk through Grand Central. But one day is a particularly bad one. McCauley is fired five years short of retirement. With his savings depleted by the 2008 financial crisis and college tuition
coming soon for his high-school graduate son, McCauley’s panic is palpable. He stops for a drink with his old police partner (Patrick Wilson) before boarding the train home. There, he’s greeted by a Hitchcockian stranger on the train (Vera Farmiga) who explains that McCauley will make $100,000 on his ride home if he can only find the person on the train “who doesn’t belong.” McCauley, as he soon discovers, has stepped into the plot of an absurdly powerful syndicate that will use him to ferret out a crucial FBI witness. The gaps in the story’s logic aren’t to be minded. The web around McCauley is mysterious. And for Cold Spring, a few stops past McCauley’s usual one, to be epicenter of such intrigue is curious. But then again, even the Feds deserve a bit of antiquing and a brisk hike. Most eyebrow raising for the 1.6 to 3.1 million who trudge into and out of Manhattan everyday will be an unforgiveable incongruity in the train’s
otherwise largely accurate path. It makes various subway stops through Manhattan, when every commuter since the time of “Revolutionary Road” knows it runs straight to Harlem. It’s the kind of inaccuracy that will cause untold swarms of strap-hangers to throw their MetroCards at the screen. But Collet-Serra, whose “Non-Stop” similarly relished the confined space of an airplane cabin, is too interested with swooping his camera through the train to care much about the blur on the outside. But he knows well how to shoot Neeson, following the actor’s hulking frame from car to car. Their movies are, in part, parables for the terrorism age. Like in “Non-Stop,” where Neeson played an air marshal, the protagonist of “The Commuter” must wrestle with the morality of uncovering the one threat in a sea of maybe-innocent, maybe-guilty faces, some of them “regulars” (daily riders), some of them unfamiliar.

Hollywood places big bets on spring lineup By JOSH ROTTENBERG Los Angeles Times For more than 40 years, Steven Spielberg’s movies have followed a simple, binary release strategy. Without exception, his films have either opened in the summer — a moviegoing season he all but invented with the 1975 smash “Jaws” — or toward the end of the year as awards buzz is heating up. The formula is so predictable, you can almost set a watch by it. Ye t when e xe cu t i v e s at Warner Bros. sat down with the director to discuss the release plan for his latest film, the big-budget sci-fi-action epic “Ready Player One,” they had something different in mind. Set in a near-future dystopia in which people live much of their lives in a virtual-reality realm called the OASIS, Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s bestselling novel has all the bells and whistles of a big, fun summer movie. But the studio wanted to open it in March — a month that has not seen the release of a Spielberg movie since his first feature, “The Sugarland Express,” hit theaters on March 31, 1974. Spielberg went for the idea without hesitation. “He was absolutely supportive from Day 1,” says Jeff Goldstein, p re s i d e n t o f d o m e s t i c distribution at Warner Bros. “He totally bought our approach and our passionate feeling that this was where we have to go.” Until fairly recently, such a move would have been almost unthinkable. For decades, spring was largely considered a kind of dead zone in Hollywood’s release calendar, an island of cinematic misfit toys
lacking a coherent identity or much inherent appeal for film distributors. “In everyone’s minds, there’s the holiday season, there’s awards season, there’s the summer movie season — and then there’s spring,” says Paul D e rg a r a b e d i a n , s e n i o r media analyst for the data firm ComScore. “What the hell is spring?” But that is changing quickly. Over the last several years, the period ru n n i n g ro u g h l y f ro m Valentine’s Day through the end of April has become an increasingly vital window for the studios to release some of their biggest films. The next few months will see a slew of high-profile would-be blockbusters hit the multiplexes, including the climax of the erotic trilogy “Fifty Shades Freed” (Feb. 9), the Marvel film “Black Panther” (Feb. 16), director Ava DuVernay’s fantasy epic “A Wrinkle in Time” (March 9), a reboot o f t h e “ To m b R a i d e r ” f r a n c h i s e ( M a rc h 1 6 ) , “Ready Player One” (March 30) and the X-Men spin-off “The New Mutants” (April 13). “If you’ve got a big tentpole, it can absolutely survive and d o e x t r a o rd i n a r y w e l l in this spring quarter,” says Jim Orr, president of domestic distribution at Universal Pictures, which, along with “Fifty Shades Freed,” will also release the giant robots-versus-giant monsters sequel “Pacific Rim Uprising,” starring John Boyega, on March 23. “People are coming out of the winter doldrums and looking for great escapism.” 2018’s tentpole-packed first quarter follows a 2017 spring season that shattered box office records. Fueled
For Hollywood, the by smashes like “Beauty and the Beast” (the second- growing potency of the highest grossing film of spring season over the last 2017 after “Star Wars: The decade has essentially been Last Jedi”), “Logan,” and a case of “if you build it, “The Fate of the Furious,” they will come.” As studios collective domestic grosses started to move larger films i n M a r c h a n d A p r i l like “Fast and Furious,” reached nearly $2 billion, “Alice in Wonderland” a benchmark that seemed and “The Hunger Games” inconceivable not so long into time frames once ago. Meanwhile, February relatively lacking in box saw three films — “The office fireworks, audiences L e g o B a t m a n M o v i e , ” followed. “Suddenly, what was “Get Out” and “Fifty women serving o n c e women kind of a slow Shades Darker” — clear the $100-million mark period became a land domestically, tying the o f o p p o r t u n i t y, ” s a y s Dergarabedian. “And now record for the month.
the secret is out.” For the major studios, expanding the calendar in search of any competitive advantage is ultimately a matter of necessity. “As more studios have invested in these big-bet tentpoles, there’s just so many places to put them,” says Goldstein. “It’s a threedimensional chessboard: ‘If they go here, you’ll do this.’ We’re all following what we can to learn about other studios’ films, and we’re all pretty quick on our feet.” For Universal, a

February release for “Fifty Shades Freed” — the final installment in the trilogy based on E.L. James’ bestselling novels — was a veritable no-brainer after the first two films found massive success in a similar time frame. “In 2015, when the first ‘Fifty Shades’ was released, Valentine’s Day was a Saturday, so it was just a perfect storm of a property people could not wait to see that had an extraordinarily large fan base and an amazingly good date,” says Orr.

Maryland shop displaying modern movie costumes By JOHN-JOHN WILLIAMS IV The Baltimore Sun HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. — John Klisavage started collecting costumes from the sets of famous movies in the early 2000s as a way to better connect with films, which he’s been in love with most of his adult life. “Costumes are the actual physical representation of the films themselves,” said the 63-year-old owner of Washington Street Books and Music in Havre de Grace. “The costumes can make or break a film.” His affinity for film — and costumes by extension — has led the business owner to amass an impressive collection of original costumes from some of the best known movies of our time — from “The Notebook” to “Hunger Games.” In all, Klisavage estimates that he has more than 350 costumes from more than 150 films. This January, he’ll display about 25 in his store during a two-month exhibit
highlighting some of his more impressive costumes and focusing on garments from the 2013 film “Beautiful Creatures” starring Emmy Rossum, Emma Thompson and Viola Davis. Klisavage said his love for films began when they got him through long stints at sea as a merchant marine in the 1970s. “It’s kind of like reading a good book. It took me to a good place. I connected strongly to the film,” he said. “It would take me home.” Costumes are a way he can connect with those good memories. “When I got around them, it was like reconnecting to those films that saved my life,” he said. “I was brought back to love, compassion and heroism.” Klisavage chose “Beautiful Creatures” for his exhibit because it’s one of his favorites. The movie was filmed in New Orleans, where he lived until the early 1980s.

Music Tedeschi Trucks Band coming to The Fox For The Edge Tedeschi Trucks Band is pleased to announce the fourth installment of their annual multi-band Wheels of Soul summer tour. Unrivalled in their blend of American soul, blues, rock and country, the 12-member Tedeschi Trucks Band, led by the husband and wife team of guitarist Derek Trucks and vocalist/guitarist Susan Tedeschi, offers a one-of-a-kind musical experience. This year, the Wheels of Soul tour will make its debut in the St. Louis area and features two highly acclaimed special guests Drive-By Truckers and opener The Marcus King Band. The band will perform live at the Fabulous Fox Theatre Thursday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $150, $100, $69.50, $50 and $35 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Growing larger and more successful each year, the Wheels of Soul tour has established itself as a unique and can’t miss concert experience. Hailed by audiences and critics as “a champion of the summer concert season” (Cincinnati.com) and “a musically pure and soulful night of music” (Atlanta Journal Constitution), the annual summer series is loved for its incredible musicianship, stage collaborations, and unpredictable set lists. During last summer’s tour - which brought Tedeschi Trucks Band together with The Wood Brothers and Hot Tuna - TTB performed more than 70 different songs and broke its own attendance records, selling out the majority of the dates. Previous Wheels of Soul bills have included Los Lobos/North Mississippi Allstars (2016) and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings/Doyle Bramhall II (2015). Trucks and Tedeschi are looking forward to the unique southern flavor that Drive-By Truckers and The Marcus King Band will bring to this year’s tour. “We all draw from some of the same roots,” says Trucks. “But we also share a different perspective than your typical southern rock bands do. I have a lot of respect and admiration for the Truckers’ songwriting. It’s an honest take on the world we live in.” In King, Trucks is reminded of his early days as a talented guitar player plugging away on the road. “It’s been fun getting to know Marcus and watching him develop. He sat in with us at the Beacon and it will be great to have a chance to collaborate more on stage over the summer”. Trucks and King also collaborated on The Marcus King Band’s self-titled 2016 release, for which Trucks recorded on “Self-Hatred.” The excitement over hitting the road is mutual. “An amazing band and great folks. It’s going to be a blast,” says Patterson Hood from Drive-By Truckers. From King: “Two years ago I saw Doyle Bramhall II, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and TTB in Charlotte, NC. I felt the

It’s a blessing to be part of the energy this year.” Now in their ninth year, Tedeschi Trucks Band carries a distinguished reputation as one of the premier live bands performing today. They are a “major force in American music” raved Austin American Statesman, with “unassailable musicianship across the board.” Embracing improvisation over convention, the genredefying collective has seemingly endless potential to explore any musical territory - from their own catalog of Grammy Award-winning originals to Sly & the Family Stone, Miles Davis, George Jones, Joe Cocker, or Nina Simone. Trucks’ masterful guitar skills and Tedeschi’s soaring vocals and bluesy guitar shine but don’t
overpower the breadth of talent on stage, a testament to the genuine respect within TTB’s ranks. The band’s latest release, Live From The Fox Oakland debuted at #1 and #6 on Billboard’s Blues and Rock Album charts, respectively, and was just nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Album GRAMMY Award. “A scintillating performance that captured this world-class band at the top of their game.” (Popmatters) Tedeschi Trucks Band is currently working on material for their next studio album and fans can expect to hear them road testing some of the new tunes over the summer run. They recently warmed up the sound board to mix a live version of Neil Young’s “Alabama,” which they performed on the last leg of their fall tour and released as a single. Dining Delights Dairy pairings for winter activities For The Edge After the hustle and bustle of the holiday season have settled down, we look forward to engaging in our favorite winter activities. Some of us keep warm by amping up our fitness level. Some prefer to settle into hibernation mode, spending the cold months relaxing in warmth and comfort. “Delicious dairy recipes can partner with your favorite winter activities to warm, refuel, indulge, or nourish. Whatever activity you choose and outcome you seek, there is a complementary dairy pairing,” says registered dietitian and nutrition educator Erin McGraw with St. Louis District Dairy Council. If you’re playing a winter sport, making muscle gains in the weight room, or aiming to maintain year-round consistency with your fitness level, look to dairy to help you refuel. “Drinking flavored milk such as chocolate milk is a natural choice to replenish your body after a workout. It is ideal for muscle recovery, providing fluid for hydration, electrolytes, carbohydrates, and high quality protein to promote muscle repair and growth,” states McGraw. Reminders during the holiday season may prompt us to use the cold winter months to maximize quality time with friends and family. We prioritize reconnecting, socializing, and investing in time with others. Quality time is often highlighted by the sharing of food, drink, and conversation. Whether we’re sharing a rich, decadent cheese dip, sipping whipped cream-topped mochas, or serving up our favorite mac and cheese dish, dairy ingredients add an element of delicious indulgence to precious time with favorite people. If your style is to hunker down when the weather gets chilly, find warmth, comfort, and nourishment in dependable dairy favorites. The richness, creaminess, and fullness of milk, cream, butter, and cheese put the “comfort” in “comfort foods” while nourishing us with valuable nutrients. Get cozy with a movie, book, or craft while including one of three of your daily dairy servings. However you balance your winter

Dining Delights
Bill Roseberry/The Edge
The egg and chorizo sandwich with a side of French fries off of the menu at the Schlafly Tap Room.
The Schlafly Tap Room By BILL ROSEBERRY For The Edge I was on quite the rock concert kick in 2017. A group of my buddies and I checked out several bands over the calendar year and a group night out for me means you gotta eat. I mean before you go see a good concert you need to have a full belly right? It gives me an opportunity to find good restaurants near concert venues to check out. Recently I had the opportunity to see Primus, one of my favorite bands of the 90s, at Peabody Opera House in downtown St. Louis. The
concert was great, but that’s a story for another time. It gave me a chance to lead our group to a great rallying point to start our night, my choice — the Schlafly Tap Room located at 2100 Locust St. in St. Louis. Ole Jack Burton always says what the hell, so I figured we’d check it out. Oh wait, that’s Big Trouble in Little China; wrong Kurt Russell movie. Russell’s 1981 flick Escape from New York did have scenes filmed in St. Louis though and the building which now houses the Tap Room was featured in the movie. I guess I should be quoting Snake Plissken instead of Jack Burton, my mistake. Just the building alone is worth checking out. The Tap
Room brewhouse was established in 1991, but what is actually two adjoining buildings were constructed in 1902 and 1904. The Swift Printing Company was there until 1969 and then the location sat empty, deteriorating. A fire in 1976 almost brought its demise and set the stage for it to represent a post-apocalyptic New York in Russell’s 1981 film, but Schlafly came to the rescue. The old brick buildings have plenty of character, as does the inside of the giant location. After all it houses a brewhouse, a couple of bars, a banquet area for wedding receptions and events and a large dining area. Continued on Page 25

Dining Delights Eat Continiued from Page 24 The first thing we saw when we entered was the Schlafly gift shop as we made our way to the giant dining area. We sat up shop in the back corner near the large windows where we could see into the brewhouse where the magic happens. If craft beer is your thing you will definitely enjoy it — there are plenty of brews to choose from — but trust me the food is much more than just bar fare, too. I perused the menu before our visit. You can check it out at www. schlafly.com. It offers a pretty eclectic menu with a little bit of everything. I went with the eggs and chorizo sandwich with French fries. This is a messy choice with two fried eggs oozing creamy yoke all over everything, but that’s what makes it great, too. The chorizo had a great kick to it and meshed well with the creamy, sweet egg yoke. It also included pepper jack cheese, crispy onions, pico and Cholula mayo all served on a ciabatta bun. The mayo added another sensational spicy blast to the whole experience to team with the chorizo. Maybe best of all was the decision for the ciabatta bun, which housed the whole thing well. The a i r y b re a d n e v e r g o t too soggy under all the sloppy ingredients, the perfect vehicle to deliver everything. The fries were sensational. They were of the shoestring variety with the skin on and were
Bill Roseberry/The Edge
The entrance to the Schlafly Tap Room located at 2100 Locust St. in St. Louis. extremely tender. I couldn’t get enough of them. Mike and Dave, two of the members of our group went with another staple here — the meatloaf muffin. They both bowed down to its excellence. It featured baconwrapped meatloaf, a fried egg, crispy onions and white cheddar cheese served on an English muffin. I will have to try this on my next visit. The other members of our group, Brandon and
Chris, went with the Cuban and the taproom burger respectively. Brandon raved about the Cuban, served with pulled pork, ham swiss cheese, pickles and mustard sauce on a hoagie. The taproom burger featured a hamburger with slaw and white cheddar cheese served on an English muffin. Chris found an all-star when he ordered a bag of Bavarian-style soft pretzels which were served with a white cheddar cheese sauce. The pretzels were tender
and not overly salted with a hearty taste, but it was the cheese sauce that left us wanting more. It was incredibly sweet, creamy and addictive as heck. I could have guzzled it straight from the container. Some of the other interesting items on the menu include: west coast mussels, lamb and beef shepherd’s pie, jagerschnitzel, barbecue shrimp, poutine, a grilled salmon salad, a shrimp banh mi sandwich, a black bean
burger and falafel. There is plenty more to check out on the menu also, so make sure to visit their website. As for beer, we went with a few of those, too. I started with a berry berry tart beer. It wasn’t quite as tart as I hoped, but had some good sweetness to it. Next I went with the Sterling, which was on the Schlafly Hop Trial. That means it’s a trial beer and not in production yet. Again, it was hoppy, but not has much as I hoped. Both beers were conservative for
what they were. Finally, I went with an old staple that you can never go wrong with at Schlafly, the pumpkin ale. It is one of the better pumpkin beers on the market in my opinion and a staple for the fall season when it comes to beers. So whether you’re with a big group, on a date, looking to eat or check out some beers, the Schlafly Tap Room is worth a visit. And like ole Bill Roseberry says, it’s a great place to go when you gotta eat.

Louisiana restaurant still going strong By SHARI PUTERMAN The Daily Advertiser of Lafayette LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Jody and Tonya Hebert of Maurice aren’t afraid to take risks. And almost 18 years after tackling a pretty big one, their hard work and positive attitude continue to pay off. The Heberts own Dupuy’s Seafood and Steak in Abbeville, an eatery known for its eclectic cuisine and, of course, Cajun hospitality. Although the two have spent much of their lives in the food service industry, buying a business wasn’t necessarily part of their plan — but when the opportunity knocked, they bit right in. Jody and Tonya met in 1996 at an Italian restaurant in Abbeville, and they quickly hit it off. Two years later, they were approached to manage and run Dupuy’s. “They wanted my wife to take over the front,” Jody explains, “and they wanted me to run the back. We did that for about one-and-a-half years, and then the opportunity came up to buy the building from the Dupuy family.” So what made them do it? “We wanted to make more money and better ourselves,” he says, “so we took a shot at it.” The rest, as they say, is history — but success came with some sacrifices. “At that point,” Jody explains, “we worked our butts off, day and night. Hustling business, getting people back in, and showing the community what we had to offer.” They revamped the menu, added several new dishes and remodeled the restaurant. After a few years, business picked up — and the people of Acadiana were hooked. Dupuy’s is famous for its oysters on the half shell and large variety of seafood items, and the Hebert family is committed to keeping the customers coming back for more. So what’s the secret to longevity in an industry with lots of turnover? “My wife and I work great together,” Jody says. “She is the thinker, and I am the doer.” That dynamic seems to be the perfect recipe for success. In fact, the couple recently expanded their business. Two years ago, the Heberts bought the building that housed Mr. Keets restaurant in Maurice, and they turned it into a banquet facility. “That’s going pretty good,” Jody says. “We cater weddings, rehearsals, school functions. Everything we do at the restaurant, we do there.” The family has no further plans for expansion, as they’re committed to growing their current customer base and focusing on the “family” they’ve built in Abbeville. “It’s our second home,” Jody says of the city. “Our favorite thing is being a part of this community, fitting in. The restaurant has been here for more than 150 years, since 1869 ... we’re going to make sure we keep it alive.”

CHICAGO — You can’t pry the lattes out of Chicagoans’ winter-worn fingers, and those coffee sales are driving growth in an otherwise stagnant restaurant industry. Growth in customer visits at coffee chains like Starbucks and Peet’s — as well as coffee-inspired visits to quick-service restaurants like McDonald’s — are making up for sluggishness elsewhere in the restaurant industry, according to research firm NPD. Analysts credit the growth in coffee sales to a rash of deals that are bringing more customers in the door, and to loyalty programs that keep them coming back. “I’ve seen restaurants come to a grinding halt at this time of year. That’s not the case with coffee,” said Tim Coonan, the founder of Big Shoulders Coffee and a former chef. But why is coffee making such a difference in the restaurant industry? Coffee builds a habit. When customers find a coffee drink they enjoy, they’re far more likely to come back every day — or at least several times per week — than they are for, say, a great burger, NPD analyst Bonnie Riggs said. C o ff e e ’ s p o p u l a r i t y h a s a t t r a c t e d a r a s h o f investment in recent years, from European conglomerates to Chicago billionaires. Luxembourg’s JAB Holding has built up a coffee and cafe empire and now owns Panera Bread and Krispy Kreme, and has a majority stake in chains including Caribou Coffee and Peet’s Coffee. Peet’s later acquired Stumptown Coffee Roasters of Portland, Ore., and Chicago-based Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea. Byron Trott’s Chicagobased BDT Capital Partners was a minority investor in all the JAB deals, and also contributed to previous JAB transactions like the purchase of Mondelez International’s former coffee business and Sara Lee’s coffee spinoff. Coffee tends to produce higher profit margins than other food and drink businesses. And coffee chains are expanding to capture the growth. Chain coffee shops increased their locations by 6 percent from 2016 to 2017, according to NPD. In all, the U.S. has almost 3,000 more coffee shops than it did five years ago. In Chicago, that includes smaller chains like Stumptown and Joe & the Juice. Stumptown opened its first Chicago location in December in the West Loop’s Ace Hotel, and Copenhagen-based Joe & the Juice opened its first Chicago location on the Near North Side on Wednesday. Kasper Garnell, head of branding and communication at Joe & the Juice, said the company has “high expectations” for the new Chicago store, which he says will mark the company’s largest market debut in the next six to 12 months. The company has signed leases for its first three locations in the city, and is possibly on the hunt for more, he said. Big Shoulders will open a location at State and Chestnut streets later this month, Coonan said, and recently opened another inside Linea apartments in the Loop.
