Hardscapes are a new trend in landscaping.

Try a no-maintenance makeover (BPT) - Low- and no-maintenance features top the list when making over outdoor living spaces because less time maintaining means more time enjoying. Low-maintenance landscaping outranks native plantings, water features and food/vegetable gardens according to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) 2014 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends survey. Landscape professionals love to share their secrets and show off their craft when redesigning outdoor spaces for low or no maintenance. Armed with know-how and using sweat equity, do-it-yourselfers also can employ tips that professionals use for a no-maintenance landscape makeover. Landscaping with hardscapes Landscape professionals use retaining wall systems for a variety of landscaping solutions. Segmental retaining walls are commonly used to transition elevations, shore up slopes along foundations and define spaces such as creating planters, tree rings and other features. “Hardscape products like retaining walls and pavers are important tools for both landscapers and do-it-yourselfers in creating low-maintenance landscapes,” says Scott Arnold, manager of Villa Landscapes in St. Paul, Minnesota. “With just the standard VERSA-LOK retaining wall unit, you can easily create seat walls, curved couches, columns and other features.” Retaining wall systems combined with concrete pavers can be used to create beautiful raised patios, replacing high-maintenance wooden decks, says Arnold. In addition to being as cost effective as a wooden deck, a raised patio offers several advantages. “A deck railing can be replaced with wrought iron fencing or a low seat wall so the view is unobstructed,” Arnold says. “Raised

patios also look great with a contrasting paver course or rock barrier for potted plants, and steps to the ground can be created with retaining wall units.” Retaining wall units and interlocking concrete pavers come in a variety of colors, shapes and textures to complement any landscape design and are often used to create design continuity in outdoor spaces. Tree rings can be coordinated or color-contrasted with raised patios, retaining walls and other hardscapes. Permeable pavers are an environmentally sound and low-maintenance solution where impervious surface limits, storm water management, water quality and water conservation are issues. “Permeable pavers are a best practice for storm water management and quality issues because they prevent runoff and let rain water infiltrate in place naturally,” says Burt Plett, product manager of Willow Creek Paving Stones. “Permeable pavers reduce the need for irrigation in drought-prone areas, unlike poured concrete or asphalt.” It’s best to consult a landscape professional who is experienced in installing permeable paving systems so that they work properly and consistently, Plett says. Low-maintenance landscaping practices Landscaping practices can make it easier to control weeds and manage lawn care as well. The use of rock mulch and natural rock in gardens and beds, as walkways and as stepping stones offers an attractive solution to weed control and also lessens the need for irrigation. At least three inches of rock mulch or four inches of natural mulch will prevent weeds. A landscape fabric under stepping stones and rock mulch offers even more insurance against weeds. A simple way to cut down on trimming is to add a course of pavers along the bottom of a retaining wall, tree ring or planter so the mower can get close to the wall, says Arnold.

Take the sweat out of DIY projects (BPT) - You’ve been dreaming about digging in your garden, changing your landscaping or improving your house all winter long. Finally the weather is nice, your yard is clear and dry, and it’s time for you to get your hands dirty. With the right tools and equipment, you can get all your DIY tasks done while saving time, money and elbow grease. Look for products that can help make lawn care, gardening, home improvement and other DIY projects easier to accomplish. For example, instead of laboring to push an aerator around your lawn, consider a liquid dethatcher. You apply the dethatcher using a sprayer on the end of the garden hose and the formula works to aerate soil and break up the layer of thatch that hinders grass growth. Renting tools or equipment you use occasionally or only once a year can save you time and money. Many home improvement stores now offer a wide range of tools for rent, from bench saws and floor sanders to augers and overseeders. By renting, you avoid storage issues and maintenance chores. One piece of equipment a DIYer can use all summer long is an offroad vehicle. By using your off-road vehicle for heavy jobs, you can avoid the expense of hiring additional workers for project such as: * Hauling rocks or mulch around your yard. Get more done with the family of versatile Polaris RANGER side-by-sides. Their rear

dump box allows you to move and distribute these materials in different garden beds or around all your trees. * Removing dead branches and towing out bushes and trees. By either using a winch, installed on the front of the vehicle, or a tow strap attached to the rear, you can pull out old brush easily. * Smoothing out fresh dirt with a plow. Raking by hand is messy, and takes a lot of time. Instead, hook up a plow to your off-road vehicle and gently smooth out the dirt with the plow lowered to the level you want. If the dirt is already level, attach a pull-behind rake to your vehicle to make the dirt perfect for planting or seeding. * Carting lumber from the driveway to the back patio for easier access to the house project you’re working on. This will allow you to take fewer trips and saves your muscles from a few aches and pains, and also splinters. You also can reduce the number of helpers you need for the project - just make sure you have another person handy to help you load the vehicle. * If you have a boat dock, use your off-road vehicle to tow it into the water for some summer fun. After all the hard work, take your vehicle out on the trail for a bit of fun. Crown your lawn the king of spring (BPT) - Those winter chills are finally history and it’s time focus on outdoor fun again. Your lawn is the perfect spot for family gatherings, sports competitions, barbecues and relaxing afternoons, so why not make it the best it can be? Before your calendar fills up, apply these five tips and your lawn will be in great shape for the entire season. * Clean up. Whether it was packed under the snow or blown in by the wind, the winter season leaves more than its fair share of debris behind. Grab a rake and get started raking up all of this garbage. Once the lawn is clean, apply a thin layer - about a quarter-inch thick - of compost to give your lawn a boost and start it in the right direction. * Reseed the bare patches. Your travels around your lawn to rake up debris will probably reveal some bare patches. If you do happen upon a patch of barren ground, loosen the top 2-4 inches. Level the soil with your garden rake and cover the area with a mixture of grass seed and fertilizer. You could also replace the fertilizer with compost. Pat the surface with the flat end of the rake when finished to ensure the seed remains in place. Water as necessary. * Aerate your lawn. Aerating allows oxygen, water and other nutrients to reach your grass’s roots, and it’s one of the best things you can do to support your lawn. Travel across your yard with a manual or gas-powered aerator, punching holes in the ground. Make sure to pass over each area only once. After you’ve

finished aerating, spread compost, fertilizer or peat moss over your yard. The fertilizer will be absorbed quickly through the holes created by the aeration. * It’s time to mow. Optimal grass length is 2.5-3.5 inches, so cut your grass as frequently as needed to achieve this length without cutting more than third of each grass blade. Mowing high and often will produce a heartier lawn that is more adept at keeping weeds away, as well as making it less susceptible to heat and drought. Get the most out of your lawnmower while being careful what you put in it.

Old fuel cans can be troublesome (BPT) - Nothing says summer like neighborhoods coming alive with the sounds of lawn mowers and the smell of fresh-cut grass. But getting the lawn mower out of the shed and running properly can be a struggle early in the season. You turn the key and the riding lawn mower roars to life. Then the engine promptly sputters and dies. Before tearing apart the engine or calling a mechanic, look inside the gas tank. “Every spring, we see issues with mowers caused by homeowners using gasoline left over from the year before,” says Dwight Grosz, a small engine mechanic near Bismarck, N.D. “Over time, untreated fuel begins to break down, which leads to hard starting, poor performance or an engine that won’t start at all.” Why gasoline goes bad What causes gasoline to break down? The first thing to go is gasoline’s volatility. The lightest chemicals evaporate first, leaving a heavier gasoline that doesn’t combust properly. The engine will probably still run, just not as well. “A more serious problem is oxidization,” says Paul Herskind, a refined fuels expert at CHS, which refines and sells Cenexbrand fuels at more than 1,400 fueling locations. “When inspecting fuel that has sat unused over the winter, watch for signs that it is darker in color and smells sour. It might have small pieces of gum floating in it. These are all signs the fuel has oxidized. You don’t want that in your engine.” Oxidization is the result of hydrocarbons in the fuel reacting with oxygen to produce new compounds, explains Herskind. This results in gum, which can clog gas lines and filters and create deposits in the fuel system. Gummed-up carburetors can

be expensive to fix and may not run properly until deposits are removed. “Finally, there’s the issue of water contamination,” adds Herskind. Water usually finds its way into fuel tanks through condensation caused by fluctuating temperatures. Water in your engine will lead to hard starting and sputtering. How to fix it If your mower won’t start because you’ve been using old gasoline, you’ll need to remove the old fuel and any built-up residue in the engine. Begin by referring to the owner ’s manual for service procedures. Next, siphon out the old gasoline into a container for proper disposal. Then, if the lawn mower runs for a few seconds and dies, the carburetor might be clogged or have old fuel in the float bowl. “When the volatile ingredients in fuel evaporate, it leaves a sticky, varnish-like substance that clogs the small jets in carburetors,” says Grosz. “Once that happens, the only solution is to use a carburetor cleaner to remove varnish deposits.” After cleaning the carburetor, add fresh fuel and a fuel stabilizer to help keep the system clean. After treating the fuel Grosz advises going through a quick checklist to ensure your mower ’s ready for the season. Consult your owner ’s manual for maintenance recommendations. First, change the oil to remove contaminants, sludge and acids. Drain the old oil out and refill the crankcase. Grosz recommends using oil manufactured specifically for smaller engines and lawn mowers, such as Cenex 2-Cycle Oil. Consult your owner ’s manual for manufacturer recommendations.

Keep the water in your pool safe this summer.

What’s in your pool water? (BPT) - You hit the diving board, get some air and tuck up for the biggest cannonball of the season. It feels good to be back in the pool again. Or so you think. Because the truth is, if you knew what was in the pool water you were jumping into, maybe you wouldn’t be jumping in the first place. A crowded pool Swimmers and pool owners alike know pools are full of chemicals such as chlorine, but pools that lack proper maintenance allow for plenty of unwelcome guests as well. Pathogens, bacteria, algae and other invaders can all call a pool’s water home without proper cleaning. “The importance of ph and alkalinity levels are often overlooked,” says Matt Giovanisci of Swim University. “The balance of the water is one of the most important things.” Giovanisci says that while maintaining proper ph and alkalinity levels are a key first step that will allow the chlorine to do its job, many pool owners just aren’t too excited about the maintenance side of pool ownership, increasing the threat of pathogens contaminating the water. Today’s technology makes it easy Pool ownership today is vastly advanced from just 10 years ago, offering pool owners easy solutions to cleaner pools, without relying solely on chemicals. Older methods of pool cleaning include the use of pole vacuums and either suction or pressure side cleaners. Today however, the market is decidedly shifting toward robotic pool cleaners, and Giovanisci says it’s easy to see why. “Robotic pool cleaners do three things real well,” he says. “They vacuum and scrub pool floors, some actually scrub the walls

helping to remove algae and prevent permanent staining, they have a filtration system built into them that helps purify the water, and they help circulate the water and available chemicals to provide a healthier cleaner pool.” Many owners also appreciate the robotic pool cleaner ’s energy efficiency as it only costs about 5 cents a cycle hour to use. Robotic pool cleaners also work independently, just set them in the pool, press a button and off they go, saving pool owners both time and labor. Prices have also come down considerably, making them more affordable than ever. “When it comes to robotic pool cleaners, my favorite brand has to be Aquabot,” Giovanisci says. “They invented robotic pool cleaning and make a really simple and easy-to-use product.” The best pool cleaners are specifically designed to also filter the pool’s water, helping to remove the harmful contaminants. Aquabot robotic pool cleaners, for example, actually filter water down to two microns, reducing the need to rely solely on chemical solutions. And one innovation that really seems to help are the power washing jets; they channel the clean, filtered water to power wash surfaces and help vacuum small particles like silt and sand. Whatever pool cleaning solution you decide upon, Giovanisci says efficiency is the key. “Purchase from brands you trust and let technology do the work for you.
