All the Square’s a stage
One of nation’s top fine art shows, Belleville’s Art on the Square, May 17 - 19
By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com BELLEVILLE, Illinois — The nation’s sixtime number one art show, as ranked by Art Fair SourceBook, Art on the Square is a true destination, whether an artist, a collector, a foodie or simply a culture seeker. Coming Friday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19, in neighboring St. Clair County, Belleville’s Art on the Square (AOTS) features artists — 105 this year — from all over the world. In its past 17 years, AOTS’ artists have represented the United Kingdom, Belgium, Israel, Canada and Argentina. Art Fair SourceBook has ranked Art on the Square number one among 6,000 U.S. art shows, based on sales. But, fledgling collectors need not be discouraged by Art on the Square’s exceptional sales record because the fair has price points and art, including jewelry, for everyone, for whom the show is open and free to attend. Art on the Square founder Patty Gregory and its stellar committee, with many members involved since day one, make AOTS’ threeday event look easy, but meticulous, precise planning occurs all year. Gregory, of Belleville, a retired teacher, started Art on the Square in 2002 — always with a sharp focus on the art, then and now, making this year’s bar-setting art fair and juried show the 18th annual affair. “I used to work on several other art shows and was the project chairperson for the Junior Service Club of St. Clair County, doing its designer show house preview and other events, working with talented women,” Gregory recently recalled to The Edge. “I hand-picked the Art on the Square committee. It’s full of leaders and the committee rarely loses a member or a sponsor, because of their commitment and dedication, which plays a huge part in the event’s success. It’s not an easy endeavor.” Art on the Square’s 2002 inaugural event took 10 months to put together and debuted at 43rd in the nation. “That was really unbelievable!” Gregory exclaimed. Today, AOTS receives 800 to 1,000 artists’ applications each year from all over the world for typically 100 spots, increased this year to 105, at Art on the Square’s main event, set around Belleville’s Veterans Memorial See SQUARE, Page 5
For The Edge Art on the Square (AOTS) is a juried fine art show located in Downtown Belleville, Illinois. Since 2002 Art on the Square has consistently been ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the nation by Art Fair SourceBook. Art on the Square is held annually the weekend after Mother’s Day and features the original work of more than 100 accomplished artists from around the world, musical and stage performances, as well as delicious local food and drink. The 18th annual Art on the Square takes place from Friday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19. Children will enjoy Art on the Square’s extensive interactive Children’s Art Garden where they can create their own take-away art projects.
Art on the Square Hours: May 17 - 19, Belleville, Illinois 4 - 9 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sunday The three-day event is free to attend and open to the public.

Children’s Garden volunteers help assist with make-it/take-it crafts, face painting, and basic assistance to its young guests. Volunteers in this area do not need to have any artistic talents, just an appreciation for AOTS’ young guests. • Other volunteer opportunities include food court; detail patrol; grounds & logistics; AOTS’ High School Exhibit; hospitality to AOTS artists; souvenir booth; wine court (must be 21 or older). Stories that Shape Us
Elsah Historical Association hosts ‘Sightlines: A Poet’s Diary’ author
The Edge ELSAH, Illinois — Family stories tell who we are. For more than 150 years the RiehlThompson family have swapped tales that shaped six generations atop the bluffs above the Mississippi River. At 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 9, author and artist Janet Grace Riehl, of Godfrey, Illinois, will tell family stories that carry culture, values and humor at The Farley Music Hall in Elsah, Illinois. In this presentation, Riehl will honor the oral tradition, telling stories handed down to her that have woven into the lives of family and friends. The Riehl-Thompson papers are archived
in several county historical societies, Alton, Illinois’ Hayner Library, and several college libraries — including the University of Illinois. Riehl , a country girl who roamed the world and then followed her heart back home, is the great-granddaughter of E. A. Riehl, who founded the family homeplace — Evergreen Heights—in the 1860s, where she lives today. She is an award-winning author of “Sightlines: A Poet’s Diary” and the companion audio book “Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry and Music.” Her artwork has been shown internationally.

Calling all high school and middle school choirs
Perform with Foreigner, win $500 donation for music program The Edge
Hubbard Radio St. Louis’ KSHE 95 — the home of “Real Rock Radio” — is giving one lucky student choir a chance to perform “I Want to Know What Love Is” on stage — with Foreigner — Tuesday, June 25, at The Family Arena, in St. Charles, Missouri. The winning high school or middle school choir also will win a $500 donation for their music program. Choirs can still submit their video through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 5. Starting Monday, May 6, KSHE 95 listeners will have their chance to vote for the winning choir that will play on stage at The Family Arena, 2002 Arena Parkway, St. Charles. Foreigner will donate $500 to the winning choir. The contest is open to all high school and middle school choirs within the St. Louis region, including the Metro East. Choirs must submit a minimum of a 60-second video of their choir performing any Foreigner song. It can be just basic footage shot from an iPhone or Android — nothing fancy needed here. Choir can have a maximum of 25 singers and six adult chaperones. The winning choir will perform “I Want to Know What Love Is” Tuesday, June 25, with Foreigner during their concert at The Family Arena. Founded in 1976, Foreigner is an universally hailed band and considered by music aficionados as one of the most popular rock acts in the world. Responsible for some of rock-and-roll’s most enduring anthems, including “Juke Box Hero,” “Cold As Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Waiting For A Girl Like You,” “Feels Like The First Time,” “Urgent,” “Head Games,” “Say You Will,” “Dirty White Boy,” “Long, Long Way From Home” and the worldwide number one hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” Foreigner still rocks the charts more than 40 years into the game with massive airplay and continued Billboard Top 200 album success. Don’t miss a chance to sing with Foreigner at The Family Arena on June 25th. Get all of the competition details and submit video at kshe95.com.

SQUARE Continued from Page 7 public art effort of AOTS, Bi-State Development and the St. Clair County Transit District, sponsored by UMB Bank. Rails Trails and Art Family Fun Day takes place Saturday, May 11, on the trail for the public to attend and view the sculptures, some of which are 15 feet tall. Through PNC Bank’s Arts Alive program, AOTS worked with Belleville Township High School District 201’s Bridges Program for students age 16 through 20, until participants turn 21 years old. Bridges helps students, who have developmental needs, learn and bridge the gap between youth and adulthood, providing hands-on life skill instruction. A PNC Arts Alive two-year program grant enabled AOTS to hire and give a stipend to an artist with a special education degree, as well as local artists, to provide instruction to Bridges’ students. “The kids opened their own little gallery to sell artwork and fund their program,” Gregory explained. Since its first art show, Art on the Square has ranked number two four times; since its third year, in the nation’s top 10; and, since day one, always initiated outreach and art education. In 2002, Art on the Square launched its Artists in Residence sponsorship and show. In 2003, art education outreach started with five schools and has grown to include 10 to 12 schools in four different

The Living with Art: AOTS’ Interior Design Stage The Edge BELLEVILLE — HGTV Star Meg Caswell Highlights The Interior Design Stage located at West Main and First streets. Meg Caswell began her career in design the moment she decided not to attend law school. After she earned a degree in criminology, she soon enrolled at The Art Institute of Chicago where she completed her B.F.A. in interior architecture. She began her design career with Ralph Lauren Home, but quickly set out on her own, launching her Design Shoppe in a well-known Chicago neighborhood. Launched into the national spotlight as a top interior designer in 2011 when she won Season 6 of HGTV’s “Design Star,” Caswell has gone on to host her own show, “Meg’s Great Rooms.” In addition, she has starred in specials, including “America’s Best Kept Secrets,” “HGTV Home Makeover” and “America’s Most Embarrassing Living Room.” Caswell is also a regular on local Chicago and national television talk shows, including ABC’s “Windy City Live,” NBC’s “Open House,” “Fox News” and “Good Day L.A.” You will also see her featured in national ad campaigns for both Lowe’s and Big Lots. From designing a single room to multi-

To date, the program has hosted 11 sculptors and installed 68 pieces of sculpture in the city of Belleville. “That’s kind of a progressive thing,” Gregory humbly said. In 2010, AOTS met with Belleville-based law firm Mathis Marifian & Richter Ltd. (MMR), with an office in Edwardsville, Illinois, which wanted more art education in schools, for which the firm helped develop a sculpture program. This year, artist and professor Reza Pishgahi, in residence from Indiana, worked at Belleville West High School, with the art and welding departments, teaching students design. Last week, Pishgahi helped students build a maquette, a scale model or rough draft of an unfinished sculpture. The large finished sculpture piece

‘Stingray’ a great experience, not a great flick
1978 flick highlights nostalgic Edwardsville
By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist
I love the movies and I love my hometown. That makes this week’s review a little extra special. Recently, I and about 344 of my closest friends were treated to a 40th anniversary screening of 1978’s “Stingray,” the actioncomedy filmed principally in Edwardsville, Illinois, (as well as Wood River and East St. Louis, Illinois, and St. Charles, Missouri) back in 1977. In addition to the event taking place at my beloved Wildey Theatre, no less than seven cast and crew members were present to talk to us about the movie, their careers and sign autographs. I was one of the few people in the raucous crowd who had not seen it before, but I’d heard the urban legends. I knew it was not a great movie, no one would ever pretend that it was, but I also knew that it held a place of reverence in the hearts of the people. And, when you get to that point, you never die. “Stingray” is basically a grindhouse exploitation flick that just skirts the violence and sex that largely define the genre before

and Elmo (Les Lannom) buy a 1964 Corvette Stingray, about which they don’t realize has $1 million worth of drugs and money hidden inside of it, stashed by a couple of screw-up gangsters (William Watson and Bert Hinchman). For nearly 80 minutes we watched the Stingray get chased throughout greater Madison County by these dopes in a Chevelle that just never can quite catch up. The villains seem pretty one-dimensional until we realize they’re just peons working for the boss, Abigail “But Don’t Call Her Abby” Bratowski (Sherry Jackson), a real maniac who spends most of the movie cutting down random victims with an assortment of oversized machine guns. The pinnacle was easily when she set a guy’s pants on fire (without euphemism), leading to a brawl at Ronnie B’s, a dive bar that currently exists, under another name for another generation, just a few blocks from my house. One could argue that Jackson is the biggest star attached to this project and the retired cult icon sent autographed DVDs from her home in Oregon for everyone in See STINGRAY, Page 17

What are your summer travel or vacation plans?
Jill Moon|The Edge Margaret LaRose, of Edwardsville, Illinois “Go to the beach. My parents have a beach house in New York, on Long Island. We go there for six weeks.” Jill Moon|The Edge Christine Morningstar, of Edwardsville “For my birthday, my husband is going to surprise me and take me somewhere. It’s narrowed down to a few places, but I don’t know where yet. I’m going to Nashville (Tennessee), too, for a bachelorette party. The kids will be in sports and summer school.”
Jill Moon|The Edge Artisan 222 Bakery co-owner Trevor Taynor, of Edwardsville “I’m going down to Florida to just get away and spend some time at the beach for a few days. And, I’m going to San Francisco for two weeks to a baking certification through the French Diploma IV program. The owner of a baking institute in Paris is bringing that program to San Francisco so pastry chefs can reach a certain level of baking — there’s five levels, but in the bread and pastry world, level four is better than five. One week is classroom and lecture; the second week is providing twenty different recipes of your own, from pastries to bread, and judges evaluate your work for certification. Those are really the only two things I have on my mind this year, and being here (Artisan 222), of course.”
Jill Moon|The Edge Artisan 222 Bakery barista Josh Lawson, of Edwardsville “I’m going to Italy for a month. My wife Francesca’s family is from there, from Sardinia. Then we’re going to the South of France, to a small village, Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains. We have family friends there.”
Jill Moon|The Edge Artist Richard Woloszyn, of Edwardsville, retired U.S. Air Force “A family camping trip, to Indiana. We mostly go to Michigan, this is the first time going to Indiana.”

It’s a four-day conference in June. Then I’m going to Oyster Bay at Point Reyes National Seashore and see friends and family; Muir Woods; and, Sonoma.”

I could criticize a lot about “Stingray” — it shares a lot of its movie-DNA with 1977’s “Smokey and the Bandit,” but might actually be a better flick by comparison to the buffoonery in 1981’s “The Cannonball Run” (especially by “Stingray’s” husky comedic relief Cliff Emmich, who is the movie’s Dom Thank you to all DeLuise of the participants and “The Cannonball Run”). But, the Friends of the wait! Those Wildey for making movies were contemporaries the 40th anniversary screening of and it’s not likely writer/ 1978’s “Stingray” director/editor Richard Taylor, happen with such who is a great gusto! public speaker — On The Edge of the and friendly Weekend movie critic Robert fellow, could Grubaugh even have been influenced by them. In Taylor’s own words, he intimated, to me, that his inspiration was basically a goof. Between burning rubber up and down Edwardsville’s Second Street and Illinois Route 143, zooming past now defunct KFC and A&W restaurants, and highlighting how different Downtown Edwardsville looks since the city’s administration building overtopped Purcell Street, “Stingray” dispatches with its characters in questionable sequence. Alas, by the time Al and Elmo pick up a cute hitchhiker (Playboy’s July 1977 Playmate of the Month Sondra Theodore) and head for the protracted chase conclusion atop the region’s famed Eads Bridge, I was convinced
For The Edge
The Friends of the Wildey recently sponsored a 40th anniversary screening of 1978’s “Stingray,” filmed largely in Madison County, Illinois, to a sold-out audience at historic The Wildey Theatre, 252 N. Main St., in Edwardsville, Illinois. that “Stingray” could simultaneously be the best and worst movie I was going to watch that night. We learned great trivia (“Stingray” won use of its title in arbitration over another 1978 movie, “Corvette Summer”). We laughed heartily, mostly at the poking and whispering about seeing local sights and cameo appearances by acquaintances. And, I know I speak for everyone there that we will never forget this experience. Thank you to all the participants and the Friends of the Wildey for making this happen with such gusto! “Stingray” runs 100 minutes and is rated PG for thematic material, brief violence, language and smoking. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington
Sacred Grounds — where art meets café au lait
Coffee has become the new soft drink, and coffee shops the new offices or homework spots. And to a certain extent, the new art galleries. Take Sacred Grounds Café on Main Street in Edwardsville, for instance. As I walk in the front door, several patrons are busily working on laptops, while sipping a variety of coffee drinks and munching on baked goodies. The walls are adorned with mixed-media paintings by Dr. Andrew Dykeman, and I discovered it was part of a revolving art show that features local artists, presented by GohGetters, an art group so named after Vincent Van Gogh. Sacred Grounds serves as the gallery for artists’ works, which are first highlighted with an opening, and then continue to decorate the walls for a few weeks so patrons can continue to enjoy the work. And while past “drink” dates might have meant a Pepsi, a sparkling water or a glass of wine, many people now meet at coffee houses, whether it’s a first date with the person you are currently crushing on, or catching up
an old friend. Or maybe you come in solo, because you just want a little peace and quiet as you peruse your laptop, using free Wi-Fi service, or peck out the words of the next great American novel, of course, while imbibing on
one of the flavorful brews. The phenomenon is really not all that new. I think the public’s love for coffee and coffee houses is going to stick. Sacred Grounds has been in Edwardsville for 20 years. It has a contemporary, hip kind of vibe, and especially with the added art element, it feels like you are in the most happening place in town. Maybe you’re like me, stopping by after dinner at a local eatery, a friend and I decided we needed a coffee and dessert. I opted for a vanilla latte that hit the spot. But there are
many types of coffees to try, like au lait (I just like saying that), espresso, Americano, almond latte, hazelnut latte, flavored mochas, or even iced coffee, along with hot chocolate, and a selection of teas and juices. Sacred Grounds uses beans from Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters in St. Louis. Then I was ready to get my chocolate fix with one of the house-baked bars. For me, I chose a coconut chocolate chip. My friend tried the peanut butter bar, and of course, we shared. I would go back for either one. There are other baked selections, too, like pumpkin bread and oatmeal cake and other items that may vary on a daily basis. The establishment also serves vegetarian cuisine, which includes breakfast, with veggie sausage, mushroom gravy, eggs, plain or served with things like butternut squash and/or toast. Or maybe try an asparagus quiche – that actually, sounds wonderful. Sunday brunch features various vegetarian Paninis or stuffed peppers, eggs, pancakes, or whole wheat waffles, among other selections. For lunch, try quiche or soup of the day, like brussel sprout and mushroom.
