It’s an Honour to Introduce Tamil Youth Organisation’s First Magazine. Eelachchudar is a family magazine and we are hoping to provide at least one section that would interest each and EVERY member of the family. We are a group of youth around the globe who realise we have a social responsibility of telling the untold story of our nation and its people. The Genocide of Tamils is not one that began and ended inside Vanni in the year 2009. Our Organisation strengthens our identity as Eelam Tamils, together we retrace our roots to our ancestry in Eelam. We are not a bunch with perfect Tamil Linguistics, or an exact knowledge of our customs and Traditions. But we are a group that is committed to learn all of the above. We apologise if any facts or statements prove incorrect and we welcome any feedback that will help us become more informed and better equipped to write for those who remain without a voice in our mother land and for those who found a new home here in New Zealand. Tamil Youth Organisation (NZ)

THAI PONGAL TYO Celebrated Thai Pongal this year in a traditional manner. The day started as we arrived at Murry Halberg Park in our traditional attire in TYO’s colour; Blue. Luxan did a beautiful kolam and we set up for Pongal using firewood. We played traditional Pongal games and had a vegetarian lunch prepared by TYO Members served on banana leaf. The evening was a good experience for all of our members and it bought memories from Eelam back to some members. Overall it was a celebration we are looking to repeat next year. Our Pongal video can be found on Facebook and YouTube – (‘TYONZ 2014 Pongal’).

TYO CHOIR TYO Choir is a girls singing group, we will be learning to sing Patriotic Eelam songs as group. The choir will meet once a month under the guidance of TYO Senior Members. If you are a vocal trainer or if you are interested in being part of our choir please email us on tyonz.members@gmail.com You don’t need any prior experience or skills, a passion for singing is enough. We are hoping to perform on stage soon.

TYO MEMBERSHIP Tamil Youth Organisation is an International Organisation, a highly versatile group working together to explore more skills, opportunities and our heritage. Our doors are always open to new members that are looking to make a difference for Tamils around the world. Send us an email on tyonz.members@gmail.com. If you wish to contribute to Eelachchudar magazine, please contact us on eelachchudar@gmail.com

DIORAMA EXHIBITION TYO New Zealand will be Hosting a Diorama Exhibition / Competition in May. A Diorama is a 3D Model which can be as simple as paper cut outs to an expensive mini model. We have asked members of our community to forms groups of 4 to submit a 3D model that represents a certain scene of the final stage events, struggles and war crimes in Tamil Eelam. These Models will be put on display in May. We welcome all and will be posting more information soon on our Facebook.

The third conference was held in Paris, where it was decided the fourth conference will be held in Sri Lankan and more specifically Jaffna, the cultural capital of the Tamils and also where Tamils predominantly live. The government of Srimavo Bandaranaike was not happy at holding the conference in Jaffna. The government continued to place hurdles to the organizers in Colombo and also in Jaffna through the Mayor of Jaffna. Permission to construct this open air platforms for the conference was held back until the very last minute. Many researchers who wanted to travel to Jaffna for the conference from other countries were refused visa. Due to the support of the Tamil people for holding the conference the government issued visas to a limited number of researchers.

The International Association for Tamil Research held its conference in Jaffna th from the 3rd to the 9 of January 1974. On January 10, the organizers decided to hold a public meeting to distribute awards to those who had participated in the cultural program. Although the Meeting was to be inside Veerasingham Hall due to the large crowd the event was extended outside Veerasingham Hall but still within its premises.

A policeman was seen throwing a teargas bomb which did not explode, and then firing at the electric wire, resulting in a burning coil falling. As a result seven civilians lost their lives due to electrocution.

With an audience of more than 10,000 no conferences of the past were conducted in such a scale and with such enthusiasm.

The same Inspector of Police Chandrasekara was later promoted to the post of Inspector of Police by the then Prime Minister Srimavo Bandaranayaka. A Sri Lankan politician stated

The last item was a speech given by Professor Naina Mohammed - an intellectual Tamil scholar from South India. The people gathered were spellbound listening to the pure Tamil speech of the South Indian professor, and they were enjoying the entire final day's program in an orderly and disciplined manner - then the police arrived. Assistant Superintendent of Police Chandrasekera, a Sinhalese commissioned officer, led a truckload of anti-riot police of more than 40 to the scene. Their unexpected arrival ended in the chaotic disruption of the ceremony. The police had been advancing slowly through the crowd in jeep and truck wearing steel helmets, ordering the crowd to move. At the time the crowd was heavily packed, such that the police could proceed no further. Then the policemen who were armed with rifles, tear-gas bombs, batons and wicker shields started attacking those who stood in their way. The result was a stampede to escape the police attack, as policemen fanned out in all directions assaulting all. Some even jumped into the ditch beside the Fort to escape the attack. The overhead electric wires were brought down by gun-shots.

Police action resulted in the loss of nine lives, the loss of civilian property and more than 50 civilians sustaining severe injuries.

The refusal of the government to appoint a Presidential Commission to inquire into the seven deaths and the conduct of the Police which led to those deaths, was a prime cause of the demand for a separate state

We spend most of our day in front of an electronic display, from morning alarm, work computers, evening TV and all the way through our cell phone screen. So maybe it’s time we give the google glass a try. The Google glass is known for its hands free entry into the smart tech world and it will display your command when spoken to. Speech recognition has worked moderately well for Americans however it hasn’t favoured the Kiwi English too well. English in a Tamil accent didn’t play well for Apple’s Siri let’s hope google has done a better job.

The Google Glass is equip to do many technological wonders, it can take a picture of what you see, send messages, play videos and even translate what you see in foreign languages to your default language. The company is still developing this product, adding awesome new features and keeping the viewer’s up to date through their website. The feature considered most useful by its current users is the navigation service. Having your directions placed over what you actually see and having the map move with you is said to be a great experience. This feature gives an added security to drivers using GPS as you don’t have to look away from your windscreen. As this is a glass that is always on you whilst traveling you never miss a picture perfect moment. As the glasses are a Bluetooth headset you can synchronise it your phone enabling you to have a hands free phone conversation through your glasses.

Written by: Tamil Youth Organization For Eelachchudar Magazine

The technology behind the Google glass is appreciated and welcomed in a scientific view; there are a vast number of privacy and security issues that have risen with it. Some of us do not like talking to people wearing sunglasses as we are unable to see where they are looking. With the google glass an individual can record the full conversation with you without you even knowing. Privacy advocates were concerned that people wearing such glasses may be able to identify strangers in public using facial recognition. Some companies in U.S have posted an anti-Google glass sign in their buildings to insure confidential materials are not photographed with a blink of eye. Whilst we can argue that a smart phone can violate privacy and security just the same, the fact remains it’s easy to do so with the google glass as no one but yourself can see your screen. As Google Glass is a reasonably new product yet to begin international sales, not much research has gone into what kind of damage is it likely to do to your eyes? It commonly said that ‘everyone sees things differently’ and thanks to google that will become a literal statement but will New Zealand welcome this product, we have to wait and see.

A ONE WAY TICKET TO MARS The Next Giant Leap for Mankind

For the past century Mankind has been obsessed with Mars. Numerous Rovers have been sent to the red planet to examine for traces of life or evidence to indicate there was once life on mars. We didn’t stop with the science; from Cartoon characters to numerous Hollywood movies we explored our interest in Mars. But if you were given the opportunity to travel to Mars to begin a new human settlement would you take it? Yes for the first time in world history anyone from anywhere in the world can apply to go to mars, on one condition; they are to remain on mars as there is will be no way of coming back. Mars One is a non- profit foundation that will establish human settlement on Mars in 2025 and they have offered a one way ticket to Mars. While we Tamils who are tightly bounded to our families may not welcome this offer, over 200,000 people worldwide have applied. The first Short Listing leaves 1058 Applicants (including 1 Kiwi women) in the hope of living on Mars.

What happens if you are selected? Upon selection each astronaut will receive 8 years training. They will be isolated from the world for a few months every two years in a group of four in simulation facilities, psychologically preparing for their life on mars. The Astronauts will be taught skills such as physical and electrical repairs to the settlement structures, cultivating crops in confined spaces, and addressing both routine and serious medical issues such as dental upkeep, muscle tears and bone fractures.

What is expected lifestyle?

of

their

Once they arrive on Mars, the astronauts will begin making use of their relatively spacious living units; over 50 m2 per person, and a total of more than 200 m2 combined interior space. Within the settlement are inflatable components which contain bedrooms, working areas, a living room and a 'plant production unit', where they will grow greenery. They will also be able to shower as normal, prepare fresh food (that they themselves grew and harvested) in the kitchen, wear regular clothes, and, in essence, live typical day-to-day lives. If the astronauts leave the settlement, they have to wear a Mars Suit. However, all living spaces are connected by passageways, in order for the astronauts to move freely from one end of the settlement to the other. As the rovers have done much of the heavy construction prior to their arrival, it will not take the astronauts a long time to find routine in their new life, moving into carrying out valuable construction works and research .

How will this mission be made possible? The Science and Technology behind Mars One will be featured in our Next Magazine. If you have any questions that you would like answered email us on eelachchudar@gmail.com.

Auckland Cooking

One of the difficulties in living in New Zealand is that we don’t get all of our traditional ingredients we get in our homeland. But ladies who have been living here for a long time have many tricks and substitute ingredients they use to achieve the authentic flavour. So every month we will be visiting someone’s kitchen so we can share these tricks with our readers. This month Mrs. Jothini will be showing us how to make Kanavai (Squid) Pirattal.

Kanavai (Squid) Pirattal To cook the Squid 2 ½ tsp ½ tsp 1 tsp

Medium Squid Turmeric Powder Salt King Curry Powder

¼ tsp ¼ tsp 12 2 2 7 Cloves 1 Inch 1 ½ tsp ½ tsp 1-2 tsp ¼ Cup

Fennel Seed Mustard Seed Curry Leaves Medium Onion Sliced Green Chilli Garlic Ginger Medium Tomato Turmeric Powder Red Chilli Powder King Curry Powder Spring Onion Chopped (Optional)

To make the Curry

Method: •

For this dish you need one pot and one frying pan, or a wok.

• • • •

Clean and cut the squid into small pieces. Inside a pot, add the squid, ½ teaspoon turmeric powder, ½ teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon King Curry power. Cover and cook for 5-8 minutes (Do NOT add any water, the squid will let out water when cooking). Once cooked (not too rubbery) turn off the heat and keep aside.

• • • • •

In a large frying pan, or a wok, Heat 2-3 Tablespoon of oil. When oil is hot add Fennel and Mustard seeds and wait for it to pop. Add 8 curry leaves (tear then in half for more flavour) and fry for 2 min. Add the sliced onions and the sliced green chilli, fry for 3-4 minutes. Stir in between. Add the ginger, garlic and ½ teaspoon of salt, stir fry until onions are golden brown or soft.

Once onions are soft add the diced tomato, ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder, ½ teaspoon of red chilli powder and 1-2 teaspoon of King Curry powder (depending on how spicy you like your dishes).

• • •

Stir and cook the paste until the raw smell of the powders are gone. Add the liquid from the cooked squid, cover and cook the gravy for 2 minutes. Pour in the cooked squid, stir well, cover and cook for 5-10 minutes on medium- low heat. Taste the curry to see if it needs any salt. Add the remaining curry leaves (Optional - Add some spring onion). Stir and turn off heat. Serve with Rice or Roti.

• •

You can make this curry using fresh squid from the shops, or frozen squid tubes but my personal favourite is using the California Squid. These are small size squid that occasionally come into market. You need about 10- 12 squid to make one curry.

Once there was a little boy named Jack Jacobs. Now Jack is a carefree little boy who enjoys being outdoors after school. Jack loves to play with fire and even though Jack’s parents have taught him the dangers of playing with fire, he finds it irresistible and enjoyable. Playing with fire is not the only activity Jack enjoys; he also likes to trap and cut the wings off of butterflies and dragonflies and enjoys destroying the nests belonging to birds and bees. One afternoon, Jack thought he could visit his friend for a change. Since his friend lives in the city, Jack thought it was a smart idea to take the bus. Even though Jack knew he should travel only if a parent is accompanying him, Jack decided to take the bus on his own that afternoon. So he waited for the city bus to arrive and as soon as it did, he hopped on it. Jack was surprised to find the bus to be empty except for the bus driver. Feeling nervous, he ran as fast as he could to sit in the back seat. All of a sudden, he saw some familiar creatures appearing one by one in the empty seats in front of him; he also saw a tall man sitting next to him. Jack soon realized that this is not the city bus but some unusual bus where magical things take place. The tall man starts conversing with Jack. “Hi Jack Jacobs” and Jack felt very strange about the tall man calling him by his name. The tall man asked, “Jack how do you feel about meeting some of these passengers?” and feeling scared, Jack nodded his little head. Together they walked to the first set of seats; there was a wingless butterfly and a dragonfly sitting with tears in their eyes. They were complaining in low voices, “Jack you took our wings away and now we can’t fly!” Jack was speechless and frozen upon hearing these creatures talk. Then the tall man took Jack to the next set of seats in the bus. There was a sparrow and a bee sitting with very sad looking faces and with big tears in their eyes. They were complaining, “Jack you destroyed our homes with fire, and now we have nothing left to live for!” and upon hearing these words, Jack’s heart softened as he felt very sorry for these creatures. At that moment Jack realized just how miserable these creatures must have felt all this time. Finally the tall man took Jack to the very front seat and asked “Jack would you like to see your future self?” and again Jack nodded his little head. Jack widened his eyes as he saw that it was his identical self who was sitting in the very front seat. In one hand, he was holding a bird’s nest and in the other hand he had a burning match. He was about to set the nest on fire when all of a sudden, the fire was burning out of control and it started burning his hand and soon his hand was on fire. Jack could not bear his identical self catching on fire so he closed his eyes tightly. The tall man knew that Jack had finally come to a realization so he snapped his big fingers. Jack opened his eyes and he saw that the bus was empty again and the tall man was nowhere to be found. Jack also realized that the bus had not moved an inch since the time he had got on. He immediately got off the bus ran as fast as he could towards his house. Jack took a big breath outside his house and he thought about the events that just took place in the magical bus. Jack finally did realize that doing good deeds can only bring goodness into his life. Therefore, from that day onwards Jack had stopped playing with fire and had stopped hurting little creatures so they can live peacefully.

New Zealand to host every side in ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 The local organising committee of ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, which will be jointly hosted by New Zealand and Australia from 14 February to 29 March, has announced its 14 host cities and a 49 match schedule that will see every team play matches in New Zealand. The announcements were made at simultaneous launch events held in Wellington and Melbourne, and attended by the respective Prime Ministers of the two host nations. Christchurch is scheduled to host the opening match of the tournament featuring New Zealand against Sri Lanka, while there will be a quarter-final at Wellington Regional Stadium and a semi-final at Auckland’s Eden Park. The final will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, as it was when the two countries last co-hosted the tournament in 1992. Each of the tournament’s 14 host cities will host three pool games. The seven host cities in New Zealand are Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Napier, Nelson and Wellington. The Australia host cities are Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. The two pools for the initial stage of the tournament, based on the Reliance ICC ODI rankings as on 31 December 2012, are: Pool A: England, Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Qualifier 2 and Qualifier 3. Pool B: South Africa, India, Pakistan, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland (Qualifier 1) and Qualifier 4 The results of the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Championship 2011-2013 will produce the first two qualifying teams, with Ireland already progressing to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 earlier this year and one other qualifier to be known by October. The final two spots will be determined through the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier to be hosted in New Zealand during January and February 2014.

How to make CAKE POPS easily!!!

Step 5

Cake pops are great for any occasion and easy to make. They are seriously adorable fun little treats to parties. You could go crazy with your imagination and play with patterns, colours, 100 & 1000’s, edible sparkles and much more. REALLY!!!! You could do soo much with them. Not only can you go crazy with making them look as you like but you can present them in ways that only your imagination will limit you. You could use a styroform block, a flower vase, or you could even make a cake pop BOUQUET!!! Ok lets get into it. What you will need: Cake (any of your choice) Frosting (any type of icing) Microwave-safe bowl Melting chocolate Cake pop sticks or skewers

Cover them with plastic wrap and foil and refrigerate for several hours (min 4 hours)!! in the refrigerator. This is the most important step as this will stop the cake balls from falling off the stick when you dip them into the melted chocolate.

Step 1 Crumble the cake in a large bowl until the pieces are very fine. Then add the frosting; you want your mixture just moist enough to roll it into balls. So the amount of icing may vary depending on the moisture of your cake.

Step 2

Just before making the chocolate melts remove the foil wrap from the cake balls and refrigerate with only the pastic wrap covered. When its time to dip the cake balls take them out one at a time from the refrigerator. This helps with keeping the cake balls firm which is what we need when dipping it into the melted chocolate. Step 7

Step 8

Melt the chocolate in a microwavesafe bowl or using a double boiler over medium heat. You could add a small amount of shortening if the consistency your chocolate is quite thick.

Now, add the frosting; you want the mixture just moist enough to roll it into balls. So the amount of icing may vary depending on the moisture of your cake.

Step 3 Using your scoop get enough mixture to make a well-rounded ball.

Step 4

above.

Step 6

Using the palm of your hands roll the mixture out into smooth balls. Keeping your hands clean and lightly moistined with water helps with getting a smooth exterior. The finished ball should look like the

Dip the cake pop sticks into the melted chocolate about one inch and push it into the cake ball about half way. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes. My cake balls just fell off the stick right into the melted chocolate. I have a solution for that. :D If your cake balls start falling off the stick just cover them with the chocolate and make them into chocolate (cake) truffles and put them in small cupcake papers like this Step 9 Now dip the cake pop straight down into the chocolate until it is submerged. Hold it side ways and rotate slowly for any excess to drip down. Let them dry on a styrofoam block. And that’s it!! Decorate and present as you wish. And and and!!! watch these sweet little babies disappear right in front of your eyes. I mean who wouldn’t love a cake pop. Written by Nilani

‘If we remain quiet, will we cease to exist’? This is the question posed by Cambodian New Zealander and playwright Sarita keo Kossamak. So in her debut play Neang Neak’s Legacy, the first ever Cambodian full length play in English. Having escaped from the Khmer Rouge regime in their homeland Cambodia, husband Veasna and wife Chantrea, find themselves in Wellington. A decade after their arrival, they are confronted by the ghosts of their past. A story of redemption, Neang Neak's Legacy asks how do you burry your ghosts? Neang Neak's Legacy is set in Wellington in the early 1990s. It switches between the domestic home of the Cambodian family and their workplace. The father, Vaesna works at a morgue with a Samoan man whilst his wife, Chantrea works alongside a cheery, sympathetic Maori. The playwright won a Chapman Tripp award for best New Playwright for this play, and the rich language and writing is a testament to this. The acting strong and all design elements beautifully coming together to give you an enthralling and moving hour and half of theatre. The themes are universal and those who have experienced or carry the history and legacy of genocide from their past will find this work even more close to home. A must watch production.

In getting to know our Auckland series we focus on this issue a service centre which offers to look after the needs of elderly, the sick and the lonely all of which are very real issues for many of the ageing population in Auckland. Amitabha Hospice Service offers free practical home help and compassionate companionship for the elderly and the incurably ill of any age and their families with specially trained and supervised Caregivers throughout the greater Auckland area. Within the Auckland region there could be over 320,000 people aged 65+ by the year 2031. Of these people, over 40,000 will be 85+. There will be a need for more avenues to take care of our ageing population. Adjoin the centre, is a Tibetan Buddhist templ e which is set among garden settings, offering visitors a place of serenity. Volunteering is the back bone of Amitabha Centre`s work, they offer free classes for volunteers who are interested in helping those in need. The next training will take place Wed 26th of February from 6.30 to 9.00pm - for eight consecutive Wednesdays, finishing on 16th of April. LET’S STAY FIT

7 in 10 of us will suffer from major neck pain at some point of our life. Neck strain is often treated with chiropractic care or medication (rather expensive) but frequent neck and shoulder stretching can provide relief. If you are experiencing neck pain or have a desk job where you know you don’t often maintain a good posture, do the series of stretches below 6 to 8 times. Begin each stretch with your neck centred in a neutral position, hold the end position for each exercise for 2 – 3 seconds, make sure you breathe in and then breathe out. While this may sound like a lot to do each session should take less than five minutes and the results will be comforting and you can avoid those future medical invoices.

NECK RETRACTION

HEAD DROP

SIDE BEND

While lying face up or sitting down, bring head straight back, keeping your eyes fixed at a point straight ahead. Then return to normal position. Repeat 8 times.

Starting in a seated position, bring your neck straight back (as above). Slowly move head up and backward as far as you can comfortably go. Repeat 8 times. (Do this exercise at the end of the session as well)

Sit down; use your hand on your head to slowly bring your right ear towards your right shoulder. Stop when you feel the stretch on the left side of you neck. Return to normal, Repeat 5 times on each side.

Chickenpox is a highly infectious and very common childhood disease. It is usually a mild, self-limiting disease in healthy children but it can be severe if contracted by babies, immune-suppressed children or adults. In New Zealand approximately 50,000 cases of chickenpox occur each year. The majority of these cases occur in children between the ages of two and 10 years, with a peak incidence in the five to nine year age group. The disease is most prevalent in early spring.

SYMPTOMS 

Fever (temperature), aches and headache often start a day or so before a rash appears. Rash. Spots appear in crops. They develop into small blisters and are itchy. They can be anywhere on the body. Several crops may develop over several days. Some children may be covered in spots; others have only a few or even none. Dry cough and sore throat are common.

Some children feel quite unwell for a few days. Others appear only mildly ill. Most are much better within a week. The blisters dry up and scab. They gradually fade, but may take up to two weeks to go completely

LIFESTYLE AND HOME REMEDIES

If you suspect your child or you have the chickenpox you must go see a doctor however these help ease the symptoms of an uncomplicated case of chickenpox, follow these self-care measures. DON'T SCRATCH Scratching can cause scarring, slow healing and increase the risk that the sores will become infected. If your child can't stop scratching:  Put gloves on his or her hands, especially at night  Trim his or her fingernails The chickenpox rash can be very itchy, and broken vesicles sometimes sting. These discomforts, along with fever, headache and fatigue, can make anyone miserable. For relief, try:  A cool bath with added baking soda, uncooked oatmeal or colloidal oatmeal — a finely ground oatmeal that is made for soaking.  Calamine lotion dabbed on the spots.  A soft, bland diet if chickenpox sores develop in the mouth. Don't treat a high fever without consulting your doctor.

Romance Comedy Action Storyline Performance

Directed By Produced By Starring Music By

Francis Lawrence Nina Jacobson & Jon Kilik

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth

James Newton Howard

This is one of those rare films where the character, the actor and the movie treatment all develop together in tandem to signify a maturing that mere words won’t do. Devoid of both the adrenalin-fuelled action of the first film as well as the satisfaction of a climax, this second part of the successful Hunger Games trilogy manages to carve itself a notable space. Jennifer Lawrence has once again put on another incredible performance as she reprises her role as Katniss Everdeen. Every word and action of Lawrence draws the viewer deeper into the plot of the movie. The film from where I sat is entertaining and well executed. The performances are strong. The special effects graphics were excellent as is the soundtrack and photography. The twist at the end and the quick ending came as a surprise but then again I suppose you need to make another film in order to cash in on another $1billion dollars. Overall, an entertaining and well executed film with strong performances throughout. The movie is a step up from the first and the ending leaves viewers wanting more and so anxious to see the next movie.

Directed By Produced By Starring Music By

RT Neason R.B. Choudary Vijay, Mohan Lal, Soori Mahat, Kajal Aggarwal D. Imman

Jilla is Vijay’s Pongal Treat to his fans, a commercial film which can be enjoyed by everyone. A full package to Vijay fans, it has a bit of romance, comedy, action and emotional scenes making it a complete feast for this festival. Imman has tried out something different with the song Kandangi as its Vijay’s first melodious duet; he has reserved the best tune for the star. It has turned out to be a heart throb among his fans till now, making this song a plus point to the film. The biggies in the film keep the audience entertained throughout the film, especially the combination of the two big names in south (Vijay and Mohan Lal).
