Welcome back to

specified

Since our last issue in July, the grip on the economy has tightened. Projects are under pressure to be delivered with a shrinking budget. The interior is usually the last stage of the specification, and can be hit hard by financial strain. It is also where the consumer experience is delivered, and maintaining design standards is a priority for specifiers.

This is what Specified is about. Optimising resources to create high-end looking design schemes that don’t break the budget. Our value engineering insights are given to the market openly and transparently, offering clear cut solutions to the problems faced.

In this issue we explore the evolving retail sector and two new applicable materials – PerfectSense® Premium Gloss laminate and Flammex Eurodekor®. We explain our ‘Good, Better, Best’ framework, designed to help you specify on budget, and we highlight our commitment to a more sustainable future with an investment into wood recycling facilities.

Don’t forget to register at www.egger.com/register to receive quarterly updates of Specified directly to your inbox.

Revolutionising

Revolutionising Retail

The UK high street is evolving. Contrary to media reports of mass store closures post-pandemic, the repurposing of empty premises tells a positive story of changing consumer trends and new forms of urban interaction.

Over 30% of commercial real estate is currently being repurposed, with Savills forecasting significant increase in 2023. Food retail and coffee shops are the fastest growing sectors, with beauty and barber shops in pursuit. It makes sense – the urban residential population is growing, and retail for food and services is needed to sustain it.

Repurposing retail spaces this way bridges a gap between consumer desire for the pre-pandemic high street and e-commerce. The evolving trends require spaces that provide experience and comfort as well as function.

For specifiers of retail interiors, functionality must be met by the flexibility to create innovative design schemes that are engaging for the customer.

It doesn’t stop there...

A key factor is building back with increased environmental sustainability. Recyclability, carbon status and origin of materials are vital points to consider. Materials must also be cost effective, as the grip on the economy continues.

EGGER offers specifiers of retail interiors a comprehensive package of materials designed to meet all aspects of the brief. In this issue, we explore where functionality, environmental conscience and cost effectiveness come together with cutting edge design.

Flammex

New! Flammex Eurodekor® board products join versatile Flammex laminate to bring shopfitters a comprehensive product offer in flame retardant materials.

Offering the highest degree of verified safety for interiors with increased passive fire protection requirements, our products meet the specifications of international standards. Flammex Eurodekor board products include MFC and MFMDF to cover all aspects of commercial design.

Using the same carbon negative, wood-based core of standard MFC and MFMDF, Flammex boards contain an intumescent barrier paper beneath the decor layer on both sides of the board.

Eurodekor Flammex P2 CE product structure

»

How does it work?

Under the influence of heat, the intumescent agent in the barrier paper starts a multi-stage chemical reaction which results in the formation of a carbon foam. The foam has an insulating effect on the underlying material, so less heat reaches the surface of the core board. This slows down the burning process and delays the spread of fire.

Passive fire protection meets cutting edge design

Flammex Eurodekor® finishes match those of standard materials, allowing specifiers design consistency and optimised value engineering opportunities. Multiple board thicknesses available from UK production offer design flexibility. Specifying Flammex Eurodekor in place of Flammex laminate, where applicable, removes the additional cost and labour of bonding to a flame retardant substrate.

PRO Design GreenTec Flooring

Few surfaces suffer the impact of retail more than interior flooring. Footfall, fixtures and increased exposure to damage, call for a robust floor designed to withstand excess wear. Consumer comfort, ease of install and maintenance, and environmental credentials are also paramount topics for specifiers.

EGGER PRO Design Flooring GreenTec offers specifiers and shopfitters an all around solution.

What is it made of?

PRO Design GreenTec flooring combines sustainably sourced wood co-products from certified forests with a recycled cork, sound absorbent underlay. 69% of the material used is from renewable resources, 55% is by-products from the sawmill, and all of the wood used is sourced from certified forests. It is 100% PVC and plasticisers free.

Mirror-like reflection comes to high traffic surfaces with new PerfectSense Premium Gloss (PG) laminate, the latest addition to EGGER’s evolving PerfectSense portfolio.

Created to withstand increased wear, PG laminate offers a robust matching surface solution to its Premium Gloss board counterpart, which is offered for mid traffic horizontal applications.

PG laminate replaces High Gloss (HG) laminate in the EGGER portfolio. The resilient Premium Gloss lacquer results in a laminate with superior scratch resistance, achieving a value of ≥ 4 according to EN 438, significantly higher than the standard requirement of 2.

PG laminate offers striking reflection in a material ideal for curved and shaped retail counters, display fixtures and table tops.

Value Engineering with PerfectSense®

EGGER sees the cost challenges faced. That is why 2022 has brought additions to our PerfectSense product portfolio to cater for every budget.

Successful value engineering is about creating a design scheme that looks high end, delivered within a tight financial framework. This is where the PerfectSense portfolio steps up. In issue one of Specified we explained the use of matching board and laminate to maximise VE potential. The same applies to PerfectSense materials for commercial interiors.

PG and PT laminates are formulated with higher resistance to wear and are intended for horizontal application, and vertical elements that see more traffic. Both require bonding to a suitable substrate.

10
PerfectSense Premium boards provide ready-to-process MDF panels for coordinating vertical pieces such as furniture and wall panelling, removing additional labour and bonding costs. Less cost, less labour, and no change
the design concept. Matching edging for all decors, innovative Accent Edging, and select finishes in Door Size laminate complete the PerfectSense portfolio of versatile materials to suit every budget. The decor is also used for wall elements, drawer fronts and shelves, in a combination of matching MFC and laminate. Using the same finish for multiple applications ensures material optimisation and minimal wastage.

Responsible for the project, Managing Director of Dougan Contracts, Ryan Dougan, told us:

For this project, we wanted a uniform appearance in all rooms of the three storey building. Thanks to the decor and material match in EGGER's product range, we were able to use decorative panels, laminates and edgebands in the same decor.”

A matching material suite from a sole supplier sets EGGER apart in the market.

When asked why EGGER were chosen for the project,

EGGER is our go to supplier of woodgrain. We have a close relationship with EGGER and can always rely on its quality, products, service and availability.

Committed to a Greener Future

The latest testament to our commitment to the environment is a £15m investment into our on-site wood recycling operations. The move will allow us to increase recycled wood content in our chipboard products for interiors and construction.

As the biggest user of recycled timber in the UK wood panel industry, this latest investment is vital in ensuring EGGER maintains a consistent supply of quality used timber and continues to create a market for products that keeps waste wood away from biomass or landfill.

Employing state of the art technology, the new recycling plant segregates, cleans, and chips waste wood, retaining stored carbon in the material. The process ensures the highest quality of raw material, so EGGER can ensure specifiers that board quality is maintained.

The move responds to the demand from the interior design and housebuilding industries for more environmentally conscious products. EGGER is a major supplier to these industries, so it is important that we lead the way in sustainable product innovation.

Increased recycled content contributes to the carbon negative status of our P2 (furniture) and P5 (structural) grade chipboard products, allowing EGGER materials to take specifiers even further towards their net zero and negative carbon targets.
