I really try to avoid politics but I really am disgusted with our governments over the past many years. I actually don’t even see why they are there. Actually I do see why, and it is not to help the citizens of our country. I cannot think of a single law put in place in the last ten years that does anything to help the people of Canada. It is all about putting more money in their own pockets, suppressing the rights of the citizens and protecting themselves from the people. And sharing our tax dollars with all their rich friends. Party politics, provincial and national are pathetic. It is like watching a kindergarten class have a debate. Everyone is loyal to their party no matter how corrupt and immoral they are. It is sadly pathetic. How do we solve this? It is a tough system that is locked in as ‘democracy’. The solution that I see is to elect only independent candidates in every riding. Normal people like nurses, contractors, small business owners, hourly employees, etc. Youi know, real people who have real life struggles like paying a mortgage and trying to afford to feed themselves. People who understand what is happening to the average citizen. Run here and I will vote for you. No political parties removes a lot of corruption. I will stop here for now. Other than how about BC Hydro and ICBC. What a joke. Oh and how on April Fool’s day the ‘government scientist’ announced Canada is warming up 3 times faster than the rest of the world. Hahaha. The day of the carbon tax. An evil April fool’s joke for sure.

It is definitely tick season in the valley. I have seen a few but have managed to keep them off of me. Ticks really enjoy the warmth of a dog’s fur. Please check your animals carefully every day as they hang out in the grass waiting for a low flying host, like me, a Bassett Hound. One of the great things about being a dog is that you can take a lot of naps. I find myself waking up from one nap, walking to another bed, and taking another nap. I kind of feel for Rob as he struggles to stay awake to get things done. I just don’t have that issue. Rob does like his naps also and he takes a lot more of them these days than he did in the past. He is still quite sick but really tries not to show it in public. Well, writing this has been a bit of work for me and I can feel my eyelids getting a bit heavier. I have been awake for 20 minutes or so and we are not out for a walk. I feel a nap coming on.

Kidney Failure My journey continues I am quite the comedy show in my home hemo dialysis room. About every second dialysis run I find a way to soak myself or my chair with saline. It is entertaining. I am getting prepped for nocturnal (overnight) home hemodialysis. I will run the machine very slowly for eight hours while I try to sleep. It requires a special heparin pump as my blood will begin clotting after a few hours. The heparin helps stop that but it has a short half-life and will not be effective for the whole 8 hours without some more being added. I will also be starting to take my own blood samples for bloodwork. That way I can track the effectiveness of my dialysis a bit better. It requires a centrifuge so I can spin the blood to separate it before I take it to the lab for some testing. It is much nicer drawing blood through my dialysis catheter rather than with a needle in my arm. Especially when the port is opened every second day for dialysis. I am excited about that stuff. Sporty Limitations The depressing thing about tennis is that no matter how good I get, I’ll never be as good as a wall. Happy Belated Happy belated birthday to Nika Holt. Just want you to know that Ethan was really thinking of you that day.

So I have noticed that I am regaining a lot of my strength, especially in my legs. I do enough walking with Watson to keep my legs in pretty good shape. But my arm strength is just not there. I just have not been doing enough to build that strength back up yet. It is hard to find the time to just do weight training and it has never been my thing. It really sucks on the golf course as I can’t hit the ball very far. My blood pressures have been a bit elevated so we will see what happens there. I have a teleconference with my whole renal team this Friday. I think they will be impressed at how well I have taken this project on. There are only 3 other folks doing home hemo in the Kootenays. The system works so much better for me in my home than it did in the Trail hospital. It is nice to schedule dialysis around my needs in my life rather than schedule my life around my need for dialysis.

With my body seemingly getting stronger every week it is hard to imagine anything going too sideways but I never know. The oncology department has contacted me saying it is time for some fresh bloodwork and an update. Even though I feel pretty good I am not sure what my blood will show. I am hoping that with the cannabis oil, healthier eating, vitamin D and more alternative treatment choices, the bone marrow cancer will still be holding back. It is always a tough call as it really showed no signs of happening originally, other than my acute kidney failure. I guess there were a few signs such as fatigue but that can be attributed to so many things. I can certainly say that the effects of the chemo were much worse than the effects of the cancer itself. I am sure that many folks are taken down by that. I know that I was in very rough shape early and had my dosages reduced. That brought me back a little bit. So I guess my biggest current side effect is fear. I am pretty nervous about every round of cancer bloodwork.

NOTICE of
Watermain Flushing
The municipality will be flushing its community water system for 6 weeks. This program, carried out twice yearly, is necessary to maintain the quality of our water supply. There may be some short interruptions in the water service and temporary discoloration of water as a result of the sediment and organic materials that are being flushed from the water mains. During this period, disinfection by chlorination will be continued. To assist the Public Works Department during the flushing operation, users are advised that if they are experiencing persistent discoloration or odour problems with the water, to immediately notify the Municipal Office and explain the nature of the problem. The District apologizes for any inconveniences caused by this operation. For further information, please telephone the municipal office at 250-342-9281.
The Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley is holding their 7th Annual Butterfly Gala on Saturday, April 27 at Eagle Ranch Resort. This is always a fantastic event as a fundraiser for a very important local organization. Enjoy a three course dinner, live music plus live, silent and dessert auctions. Check the page 3 ad for ticket information.

Congratulations to both teams and their coaches.

It’s a big deal for our youngest residents: the Art from the Heart show, which features art by local elementary school kids. Show your support for their work by dropping by Pynelogs from now until April 27 to check out the huge diversity of art on display. Admission is free. It’s heartwarming to see a young adult’s excitement when they discover their own artwork on the wall.

Life Changes So less than 6 months ago I was done. Peritoneal dialysis just was not doing the job effectively and I was forced to start travelling back and forth to Cranbrook. I was very weak and had no balance therefore I was using a cane or walking stick to get around. Honestly, I was done and contemplating suicide almost every day. Now here I am, a few months later and feeling completely different. I am glad I toughed it out through that time to get onto home hemodialysis. What a difference.

My Laundry Washing takes about 30 minutes and drying is another hour. Unfortunately putting it away is good for at least a week.
The Thrifty Reporter We all have passions. What is yours? Mine is scrapbooking which is a fancy word for making a photo album. It is getting more popular to create a digital photo album but I like working with the physical materials. Once every couple of months I join some friends for a day of making photo albums and visiting. The last time I packed all my supplies, my suitcase broke from the weight of my supplies. I headed to the Invermere Thrift Store and found a perfect size carry-on suitcase plus a few more supplies that I could use. Happy Shopping!
