Summer Solstice
We are right at that time of year. The longest day (daylight) of the year. It is/was Wednesday June 21 this year. Many folks celebrate it with a Solstice gathering but I actually dread it knowing the days are about to start getting shorter. Have a great summer everyone.
Fitness Program
I have a hiking addiction. I am taking steps to get over it.
Local Camping
If you want to do some camping right here in the valley, check out the Black Sheep Campground in Canal Flats. It is a beautiful spot along the Kootenay River. They offer fully serviced sites as well as glamping tents. They are close enough to town for easy access to gas, groceries and more. The outdoor recreational opportunities are unlimited.
AGRI Farmers’ Market
Why do I write about this market every week? Because I really enjoy attending it. I get to meet some really nice and talented vendors. I can bring home fresh eggs, beef jerky and sausages, Bugaboo beef, homemade bread and jam, pastries and desserts (strawberry rhubarb crumble came home this week) and more. Plus I get to hear Marty Beingessner perform. It is a total win-win situation.
The market is located at the AGRI Park near the T&C Feed Store at the crossroads. It runs from 3 to 6:30 pm every Wednesday. I hope to see you there.
Fresh Food
I finally was able to eat something from my garden this week. It was only lettuce but it was good and tasty. Sadly, nothing else is even close to harvest. I am anticipating some nice peas next.
Saturday is Bread Day
Make sure you visit Andi Schoni Saturday mornings in front of Valhalla Pure. He has amazing artisan wood oven bread. They are there from 9:30 am until sold out every Saturday.

Congraduations
The Class of 2023 is pretty much done! A couple of exams left here and there, but overall, all over. I hope you have all enjoyed the past years and are looking forward to making your mark on the world. Some of you will head out to some great high-paying jobs and some will seek fame and fortune.
My one tip of Valley Peak wisdom; you will find a lot more happiness helping and serving other folks than you will by being self-serving. Fame comes from what you do for others, not what you do to others to serve yourself.
Enjoy your future. It is under your control.

Big Anniversary
I just celebrated the one-year anniversary of my triple bypass and heart valve replacement. I was quite unsure of the outcome and thank the glory of God for carrying me through something that was way beyond me. It has been a year of challenges but it seems like we have overcome so far.
Thanks to all the people who have rallied around me to help me and push me forward. Kindness is a good thing and I shall do my best to pay it forward whenever possible.
Archery
Have you ever tried blindfolded archery? You don’t know what you are missing.
Tough Economy
Canada has seen a 30% increase in Food Bank users in the past year. I am actually one of them. I really appreciate the job that the volunteers are doing. They are very friendly and respectful to the clients. Please donate to them whenever possible. Thanks also to the grocery stores and other businesses who help stock the Food Bank. You are strong community members.
Hopkins Pizza
Good news. Hopkins Harvest will be starting up the pizza oven for July 1. Make sure you check it out.

How do you define yourself? When someone asks you about yourself, what is the first thought that comes to your mind?
Do you answer with information about your job? Is it what is most important to you?
Do you talk about where you are from? We do live in a beautiful area.
Do you tell them where you grew up? That is always a nice story.
Or do you describe the things you love? I am a nature-loving, God-loving fellow who really loves his dogs and going fishing. We are all different and we all perceive ourselves differently. We also try to portray ourselves in the mold that we think is socially acceptable.
I had a gentleman tell me he hates that he got married and it has really changed his life. An hour later he was posting on Facebook a happy anniversary message, saying that it was the best thing he ever did. It was hard for me to understand what he was doing.
We have a lot of social standards that just do not feel right but many of us strive to be accepted so we will just go ahead and do what is expected of us. Just be who you are and be proud of it. Do what makes you happy, not what it takes to please the crowd around you.
Learn who you are and who you want to be and bring them together. Be honest with yourself and honest with those around you. You will gain a lot of respect just by being a unique you.
Colourful
My friend has successfully weighed a rainbow. Turns out it was pretty light.
Real Food
A friend gave me a couple of containers of Doukhobour borsch for my birthday. I love that stuff.
This version is cooked with a lot of heavy cream and butter added. It has an orange colour, quite a bit different from the beet borsch we usually see around here.
A piece of homemade bread is the perfect companion for this meal.
In Castlegar, where I grew up, many residents are of the Doukhobour culture so I enjoyed a lot of their amazing food on a regular basis. My local friend also came from there and has the recipe mastered.

Watson’s Waddle
We love this photo so it is in again. Every day is different in our lives, yet overall they are the same. We never know when we wake up if we can lounge in bed for a while or if we are up and out the door. Lately it is a bit of lounging as Rob has the dialysis thing to do.
Should we eat breakfast before we go outside? Not sure if we are going on a quick adventure or a longer one. We guess we can’t go wrong by eating now. I am sure I can make room if more food appears. Is it a walk? Fishing? Visiting? Driving around with deliveries? Going for groceries? We will find out soon.
All we know is that no matter what we are up to, we get to spend time with Rob. He rarely leaves us behind. He loves us and at the strangest times will just get down on the ground and pet us. And we love him. We love the sound of him saying our names followed by a “you’re a good boy”. It is an incredible feeling to look into his eyes when we are together. We are blessed to follow in Watson’s footsteps.
Love your people, love your family, love your friends, love your pets. Really, if you just love everyone and everything, you will have a wonderful life. Love from Rocky and Drew.
What Country Am I?
I am a land-locked country in Southern Africa. I am neighbours with Congo, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Botswana, Angola, Mozambique, Malawi and Namibia. My capital city is Lusaka and most of my population lives near there. My people speak 73 different languages but English is the official one. I am considered a ‘Christian’ country but similar to Canada, we have many denominations and traditions.
Copper mining and agriculture have been my main economic providers. Football, rugby and cricket are my main sports. Maize is my main staple diet. What Country am I? See page 7.

Watering My Garden
A farmer friend did a trial with plants and water. His plants grew twice the size with water from his dugout than from town water. I often water with my hose and it smells like bleach (chlorine). My hands end up smelling like chemicals.
My garden is growing very slowly this year compared to last year and it has been disappointing. I thought I was starting to figure things out. I don’t have another source of water so I must continue using town water. My new strategy will be to only put the water on the soil and not let it touch the leaves or the plants and hope that helps. Regardless, there will still be lots of chemicals in my vegetables, which may not be a good thing.
I am trying to use more rainwater but it is a lot more labour-intensive which is tough with my health status. I hope everyone has amazing gardens this year.

Free Food Pantry
I know that this is redundant but please help keep the Free Food Pantry stocked at 1313 10 St in Invermere. It gets emptied quite often and it really needs more support. A huge thanks to those who have been helping keep it filled. I celebrate whenever I go by and it is all stocked up and I am sure many of the users do as well. We do have a great community.
Good Work
I have to say that the folks who look after Chabot Park do a great job (Kinsmen Beach also). They have to deal with a lot of remnants from the day before.
