Administrator Required

ICAN (Invermere Animal Companion Network) is hiring an administrator to monitor the day-to-day operations of the organization. The job requires exceptional communication and organizational skills. You will be the main contact for the organization and will answer to a volunteer board. You will be scheduling and training volunteers to prioritize care for the animals. You must have a passion for animal care

and will facilitate fostering and adopting of the animals

Hours are 10 am-4:30 pm Tuesday to Saturday.

Wages start at $20/hr.

Drop a resume at the shelter or email communications@ican.com.

Meteor Shower

The Eta Aquarids meteor shower will reach its peak this Sunday and Monday, May 6 and 7. It is created by debris from Halley’s Comet.

It will be average viewing conditions with about half a waning moon in the sky to brighten things up. The best viewing time is pre-dawn.

Get out of town away from artificial lights and prepare to relax and wait. Shooting stars are easy to see but you must be patient. In the northern hemisphere we are set to see 10 to 20 per hour and if we are lucky there will be a couple of ‘stargrazers’ that cross the whole sky.

Is This Summer?

I go through this every year. 28 degrees during the day, 10 at night. That has got to be summer. It sure seems like it to me.

District Crisis

We have a brutal pothole problem in Invermere but that is nothing compared to the housing situation. Lake Enid is filling up for the summer with valley homeless people. It is a sad situation that needs to be addressed more firmly.

I recently met a chef of 27 years with a couple of dogs. He is homeless and has no chance of finding a place around here. It is too bad as he is very talented and had a couple interviews set up. It is heartbreaking watching him go through this and wondering how many others are in the same boat.

Riddliculous

Both words in the answers begin with the letter ‘L’. Youth baseball.

Document needed to serve alcohol. Superman’s girlfriend. Dog walk regulation.

See page 6.

Cinco de Mayo

The ‘Fifth of May’ is celebrated in Mexico every year. They say it is the biggest holiday celebration that no one really understands.

It actually represents a huge battle victory over invading France which took place on May 5, 1862.

France eventually won the war but the much smaller Mexican army held them back successfully in the Battle of Pueblo.

Nice Note

Dear Board of Education. So are we!

Tennis Club

There is a group of 15 or 20 regular tennis players in the community. They play mostly at the three courts near the Kinsmen ballpark and the old CP Lodge. Meanwhile pickleball grows and grows with several venues to choose from. But they want more. The District is considering converting the tennis courts to pickleball, catering to the masses at the expense of a small dedicated group. Tennis players unite.

Watson’s Waddle

We really love being in Invermere. We get to sleep on my ‘half’ of what used to be Rob’s bed. My area has a nice comfy, fleece blanket and we put a big ridge of blankets between our zones. Drew has a favourite red blanket

But it wasn’t always this way. It took some finesse on our part. At first I was lucky to be allowed in the bedroom with my bed on the floor. I love the sounds of people sleeping. It is very relaxing.

Putting my chin on the bed and using my biggest eyes possible was the next step. Always a good moan when Rob would reach over and rub my head.

Then my front paws up top, with a pleading look. Eventually I was hoisted up for a couple minutes in the morning.

Then my own little corner of the bed for the night but somehow I would wake up spread across the bed.

Now it is perfect. I get up first and quickly but casually claim every inch allowable. By morning we have claimed at least ¾ of the king size area. Drew is pretty crafty. Rob is on the edge, literally.

I hope that helps all you other dogs who have not quite made it to the ultimate surface in the house. Be patient but also insistent.

What Year Was It?

The first bikinis were sold (Paris), the ‘Battle of Alcatraz’ riot happened, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis paired up as a comedy team and the first Tupperware was sold in stores.

The United Nations formed, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ was released, Freddy Mercury was born and the UNICEF fund was created. What year was it? See page 7.

Playing on the Lake

Yesterday while walking along the beach I noticed that things are starting to pick up out on the lake. Fishing boats, a water skier, paddleboards and kayaks and even the odd person wading out there. Warm weather sure changes things in the valley.

House-keeping Staff Needed Offering year-round employment, competitive wage of $20/hr (based on experience), a generous benefit package after three months plus the use of our recreation Center and facilities.

Staff accommodations are not available. The position involves weekend work. If you enjoy working in a friendly, well organized team environment, we welcome your application.

Free Food Pantry

There is not much new I can write about this. Thank you very much to the folks who slip some food into the Pantry at 1313 10 St. It gets emptied nearly every day. Food prices are crazy and on their way to doubling. We have a lot of struggling families in the valley but we also have some generous ones.

I could still use a financial sponsor or two but I am happy to see food put in there.

Dog Walking

It is important to get your dog out for some exercise and exploring every day. It helps their physical and mental well-being. Watson loves it.

If you find yourself short on time or energy for any reason: work, golfing, illness, recreation, etc. it can be tough to get out enough.

Jen at Kootenay Kritters can help with that. Jen loves to walk and she loves to sit (house and pet sit that is). She knows where all the great dog walks are around here. She will help keep your hound healthy and happy. Call 250-755-6334.

Flowing Waters

The ice is off of most of Toby Creek except along the edges. It is a bit of a dangerous area. My friend’s dog slid off the ice into the creek and he had to go in after it. The current is very strong there so he ended getting pulled quite a ways downstream. They both did manage to get out safely

Could Not Resist

Well it is still quite early but the weather is so nice that I had to plant a few things. I do this every year and end up killing plants. But this year will be different haha. So I picked about 1/10 of my garden and planted some lettuce, green onions, carrots and beets. I did peas last week and one of them is popping out of the dirt today. My garlic from last fall is coming up nicely

Soil Nutrition

Is your soil old, and does it need a boost of nutrients? A tip for those who prefer to avoid chemical fertilizers is to add 4-6 different ingredients to your beds, to top up the nutrients and feed your future plants. For example: peat moss, chicken manure, sea soil, mushroom manure, fresh top soil and compost. The more stuff you mix into your beds, the more food your plants will have.

If possible, it’s best to rotate your favourite food crops, such as garlic and tomatoes, to different spots in your garden each year. This prevents diseases and gives the soil a chance to rebuild its nutrients.

It Was That Year

(From page 4) In 1946, the baby boom began. A house cost $5,600, a car was $1,120 and the average annual income was $2,500. The Mensa Society was created and the San Francisco 49ers football team formed.

Human Nature

It is so obvious now that people were lied to about the vaccines and the fact they are ‘safe and effective’ and you cannot transmit if you have the shot. People with the shot are still getting and giving it. Now we are told it decreases the severity which is an anecdotal ‘feelings’ statement with no actual way to prove otherwise.

Yet instead of being mad or frustrated with our authorities, many people still believe every word they say and are mad at the nonbelievers who avoided the shot and tried to warn them. It is a strange concept.

Context

Scientist: My findings are meaningless if taken out of context.

Media: Scientist claims “Findings are meaningless.”

The TV Tells Me

Human-caused climate change is a huge lie but many are so indoctrinated by their televisions that they will buy into it. Enjoy your crickets for lunch as everything else causes climate change.

Firstly, there is no link between carbon dioxide and heat. That is all made up. Carbon dioxide and nitrogen make up less than .04% of the atmosphere and have been much higher many times in history. CO2 is a major nutrient for plants and critical for life on Earth. Any biology student can tell you that if they have not been

brainwashed by the ‘experts’ on TV. Things like carbon taxes and carbon credits do nothing for the environment but they sure help transfer more wealth from the middle class to the rich. You can believe anything you want but I don’t think I would live in fear of the Earth burning up anytime soon.

Where We Were

The page 6 phot shows Rocky and Drew out near Windermere Beach. They enjoy wading a bit in the lake.

Sad

It honestly makes me sad that 90% of the people we look up to are total frauds. Lying to our faces.

Remind yourself that you already have all the information to be successful and you need to quite listening to other people. Just go ahead and listen to yourself.

Go Leafs Go

A lot of Canadian hockey fans are very excited. The Toronto Maple Leafs have made it through the first playoff round for the first time in a very long time. Congratulations to the team and all of their fans. Good luck this round.
