All proceeds from all Blizzards will be donated to the nearest Children’s Hospital (Calgary in our case). The Children’s Hospitals are a critical part of our health system and have done some fantastic things for some of our local youth in times of serious trouble. So have a Blizzard for breakfast, have a couple with co-workers for lunch and finish off the day with one for dinner haha. It’s all for a really good cause.

MIRACLE TREAT DAY THURSDAY, AUGUST 11 DAIRY QUEEN

One part of human nature that we all share is self-doubt. We all know our own imperfections and prefer to not share them. It is crazy how we can be incredible at a job, sport or whatever, and have folks compliment us all day, every day, and we still ‘know’ we can be a bit better. And then that one person has a problem or complaint about you or your service. Your nearly-perfect world collapses around you. One criticism will erase every compliment you have ever received. It can make you feel pretty bad. So remember that when you are on the other side of things. It is so easy to find something to complain about amongst hundreds of things to commend. Yet so many of us will choose to complain. We have to change that. Be the person that you want others to be. Should you give your teammate/kid/coworker heck? Or should you give them help? Be supportive and positive. Make people feel good about who they are and you will feel better about who you are.

Okay, so there is a problem. Rob has been pretty good so far, but the guy loves thunderstorms. I don’t and I don’t know any dogs that do. I lived outside on a chain for 7 years. Thunderstorms really sucked through that time. And even now, I just can’t figure out where the sound is coming from and why the house is shaking. Speaking of shaking, I am just quivering during this storm. We got up on the bed and he has been holding me, talking to me and hugging me but I am still nervous and shaking. I wish Trudi was here. The quietest and safest spot seems to be on the bathroom mat beside the tub. Matilda always goes in there and I find it is a comfy place. I am not sure what to tell you other than when it is thundering out there, please pay attention to your pet. Stay near to them and let them know that you are there to protect them. It will be an incredible bonding experience.

What Year Was It? Fleetwood Mac released ‘Rumours’, Lynyrd Skynyrd lost 3 members in a plane crash, the Bee Gees released the soundtrack for ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and Elvis performed his last concert. In other entertainment, Groucho Marx died, Star Wars was released, ‘Roots’ began and the Toronto Blue Jays played their first game. What year was it? See page 9.

So I finally completed my ArtWalk passport. I have visited all seven participating studios and galleries over a couple Friday evenings and I am now entered to win some great prizes. The tour itself was really nice. I am not a big ‘art person’ but found myself drawn into some pretty nice works. Art can really grab at you when you take the time to explore it. Anyway, Friday evenings, noon-8 pm for the ArtWalk Invermere.

WHERE WAS I? Can you guess where this photo was taken? Answer on page 10

Go For a Dip I have to remind myself and therefore I will remind you. We live in a great place with some beautiful lakes. Swimming lakes, from the convenience of Windermere Lake to the serenity of some of the hidden mountain lakes. Make sure you take the time to go for the occasional dip in a lake. It is good for you, physically, emotionally and spiritually. It just feels so good, refreshing and cooling.

Time Out “It’s no use to send my son to his room,” said the father. “He has a television, CD player, computer and smart phone in there.” “What do you do then?” “I have to send him to my room.”

Parentime That seems to be a big part of what it is all about. Parenting involves spending time with your kids. Spending time having fun together, spending time doing chores together, attending events together, reading, watching television, etc. Eating dinner together is a great time to explore each other’s happenings for the day and plans for tomorrow. Preparing dinner together is good bonding time. Pretty much any time you spend with your kids is time that they learn about you and from you. It is much easier communicating with your kids when you are used to being around them. Rules and boundaries are simple when communication is open.

Many Meteors This year’s Perseids meteor shower is supposed to be one of the best ever. Meteors (shooting stars) are actually debris entering our atmosphere. This year the Earth’s orbit will be taking us into the center of a debris field and we could see as many as 200 meteors per hour. This Thursday, August 11 to Saturday, August 13 will be the peak viewing nights. The half moon will be setting around midnight giving even better viewing into the morning. I promise you that, if the weather conditions are clear and you look into the sky for a few minutes, your mind will be filled with amazement.

Delicious Every Day Tony’s Greek Grill has incredible food. The donairs and souvlaki are so delicious. The kalamari is always the perfect texture and taste. All of the food is really good. And the smoothies… They are some of the best I have had anywhere. Tony’s is open 7 days/week from 11 am to 9 pm just one block east of the highway in Fairmont. Check them out.

Where I Was The photo on page 6 shows an incredible display of wedding cakes and decorations. It is from the Wedding Blender last summer. It is ‘Fun Cakes by Diane’. You can find her products at Valley Foods.

Safe Solution The student driver would swerve nervously whenever a vehicle approached. The instructor aked her to stop it. Then one day, she did stop it. “Good job,” he said. “Thanks. All I have to do is close my eyes whenever a car comes.”

Caesar Sundays Sundays are great days for most people. For many it is a day off work, for others it is a day to go to Church and for others it is a big family day. Caesars are pretty good as far as drinks go. Most people love them. The Station Neighbourhood Pub has combined the two for ‘Caesar Sundays’. Try one of their classic Caesars or take the plunge and check out the $20 Special Caesar with 2 oz of vodka, 2 meatballs, peppered bacon, giant prawns, homemade hot sauce and more. A beverage and a meal all in one.

Amazing Boost Last week while doing deliveries, I bumped into an old friend. He asked for a copy and went directly to his favourite section, ‘What Year Was It?’ This was interesting for me because I never really know what parts of The Valley Peak are enjoyed by the readers (jokes seem to do okay). It was almost exciting to see someone enjoying that part. Amazingly, ‘JF’ nailed the year perfectly (1972). I was very impressed.

Daily Specials Kootenay Coffee Works is a wonderful place to visit. They have incredible food. The daily lunch specials are amazing, including a prime rib dinner (with yorkies) on Thursdays. The breakfast bagels are real egg, real cheese and real bacon; they are real good. And the chocolate avalanche. Ask about it. They are located next to Bavin Glass.

Work Phone The family was discussing their high phone bill. “I use my company’s phone,” said the father. “I use my work cell phone,” said the son. “”I call from my workplace too,” said the mom. “I never use the home phone.” Suddenly they all looked over at the maid. “What?” she said. “So we all use our work phones.”

Lots of Learning The fall learning season is upon us. Our brains are ready to absorb some new knowledge. The College of the Rockies is here for us. They offer an incredibly diverse range of courses on campus, within the community and online. Check out the fall courses online at www.cotr.bc.ca/coned.

Thanks for the Respect It is always interesting dealing with us, the humans. As a Fire Warden, I visit lots of people in campsites back in the mountains. I chat them up regarding safe use of campfires. It is a pretty good adventure as I get to visit lots of beautiful places. I want to thank the campers out there who respect the Fire Wardens and the rules for campfires. A single wildfire can cost mil-

Olympic Excitement As I am writing this, Canada has won two medals in swimming, the women’s rugby sevens team has beat France to qualify in the semi-finals and the number 1 tennis player has been upset. There is lots more going on but I have no television and just get my news from CBC Radio. It is nice to see an event happening that is bringing the world together.

Start Stretching We are nearly half way through August already. That means the curling season will be coming up pretty soon. The season will begin at the start of October. Who are you sweeping with this season? It is time to think about that a bit. Enjoy August. Thanks for reading The Valley Peak.
