January 16-22, 2020 Snowflake Festival Head down to Kinsmen Beach for the perfect winter day on Friday, January 17. The Snowflake Festival goes from 5 to 9 pm and includes fire pits and live music. The Bonspiel on the Lake will be running from 4 pm on into the night with the Legion warming and cooking hut set up for everyone to enjoy. The Taste of the Valley food event runs from 6 to 8 pm, a great chance to sample tasty dishes from several valley restaurants. Bring along your skates, or just enjoy watching the action. The festival has a great finale with fireworks on the lake at 8 pm. This is a fantastic evening event to liven up January.

Top Score My wife got 8 out 10 on her driver's test - the other two guys managed to jump out of her way.

Steamboat AGM The Steamboat Mountain Music Society is hosting their Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and Annual General Meeting takes place this Saturday, January 18 at the Edgewater Community Hall. Cocktails (cash bar) at 5 pm, dinner will be

Volume 18 Issue 3 served at 6 pm and the AGM is at 7 pm. The meeting is followed by a dance with live music by The Usual Suspects.

Bonspiel on the Lake It is happening this weekend at Kinsmen Beach. Really, it is the greatest curling event in the World. Sixty-four teams tackling the roots of curling on outdoor, lake ice. Conditions will bring down the best curlers ever. Hacks like me actually have a chance. It is all about figuring out the nuances of the ice surface. They are not very subtle on the lake sheets. Check it out for some entertaining spectatorship. It will be at Kinsmen Beach Friday through to Sunday, January 17 to 19. Enjoy tasty Lakespiel food provided by the Legion Warming Hut/Cook Shack all weekend. Delicious.

A Little Green I received a great Christmas card that offered a ‘green’ suggestion on the back. “Many dishes, such as casseroles and frozen meals do not really require a preheated oven. Just place the dish in the oven and turn it on and you are saving energy.”

This world seems to need a lot of things. Everywhere I look I can see things that are not right. I really wish that everyone would change. Living in this world really sucks. For some reason, that is a pretty common thought process. Sometimes even for me. I can blame everything on the condition of the world. But really, what does the world need right now? The world needs ‘a better me’. If I want my world to be better, then it is up to me to make it better. How can I do that? I can start by looking at things differently. Clearly if I think someone looks like they are a jerk, then they will seem to be a jerk even if they are the nicest person around. Why? Because of my energy, not theirs. If I see someone struggling I can laugh and judge, or I can be positive and offer assistance. My energy can change the world instantly. So is it time to change your world? Because you are the only one who can do it. I have a lot of negative energy within me but the positive can overwhelm it if I allow it to. Every person and every situation has some good in it. It is up to us to look for the good everywhere. Anyone can see the bad things but we will find happiness when we can see the good. Start small and remind yourself constantly that your joy comes from you and what you think of the world around you.

Wise Plan Take my advice ... I'm not using it.

Free Groceries for a Year Woohoo! It is that time of year again at AG Valley Foods. The Great Grocery Giveaway is back, where we can win instantly, weekly prizes, online prize opportunities and much more. Imagine winning free groceries for a year. I know I could use that. We can also win a 60-second shopping spree. That would be a lot of fun. Get your game tickets from the cashiers. Enter the in-store draws as well as online. In-store this week we can win a KitchenAid Food Chopper on January 18. Congrats to Herb Welller on winning the hand mixer last week. Get your entries in now. Good luck everyone and thanks to AG Valley Foods for being such a strong and contributing member of our community.

Watson’s Waddle Hahaha. What an amazing day this has been so far. Up early so Rob could get on the dialysis machine and I toughed it out for a few hours until my friend showed up to get me outside. It is very cold today and once we got out there my toes were getting cold very quickly. So back in to get the booties on. My booties are like tough balloons that stretch tightly over my paws. They keep my feet dry but I can still feel the ground through them. They work well. Although they are tight enough that it is a challenge to get them on. We stretch them over a coffee mug and them I put my foot into the mug. Ingenious really. And then I go nuts. I know that I get to go outside so I start to run wildly around the house. Rob eventually has to just open the door so I can go for it. I do go for it. I love the snow and with toasty tootsies I am pretty happy to be out there. It is fun to bury my snout in the snow and then plow along for a few feet. Or finding that perfect depth that I have to leap through it to get around. You know, short legs and all. Oh and I met a new puppy, Leo. He really liked the snow also. His long legs carried him through it like a dream. Please make sure you are still getting your pets out a bit but keep an eye on temperature and their feet.

Mental Health

SNOWFLAKE FESTIVAL FRIDAY, JANUARY 17 KINSMEN BEACH, 5-9 PM

I had a pretty good breakdown this morning. My hip has me down and out and it is very frustrating. I look over at poor old Watson and feel full of guilt for not being able to get him out. I have to rely on friends every day. It got me thinking that I should give Watson up to someone who is healthy and able to give him an active and happy life. After all he is only 13 years old and needs to exercise. It was a pretty depressing train of thought. A friend was able to talk me through it and I am looking forward to getting into Mental Health in a few days. It seems I have become a pretty fragile person haha. Not much offends me but I seem to have a lot of internal issues. Keeping it stored inside doesn’t seem to work well and complaining constantly to friends is not that good of a plan. But having that someone you can trust to tell your thoughts to is pretty important. Whether it is a good friend, someone going though similar stuff, or a professional counselor. All three would be nice. And remember that we all have issues going on. Don’t be embarrassed about yourself and don’t be judgmental of others. Just be the best you that you can be at any given time and look for a little boost when needed.

Side Effects I have talked a lot about all of this but I am not sure if I have touched on the time consumption of home hemodialysis. I am hooked to a blood-cleaning filter system for just over 4 hours every second day. It takes a couple hours of prep and an hour of clean up. In between dialysis days I also have to do about an hour of preparation of the dialysate fluid and the hook-up tray of syringes. I also have to do some maintenance, cleaning, track and order inventory, bloodwork, video appointments and more. The total is about 34 hours per week just to stay healthy and alive. It is a long haul as well. Likely a life sentence. When I add in the time to get the paper out and around the valley, I don’t come up with a lot of free time. I am very blessed to live somewhere that just being outdoors is a great experience.

Applesauce Healthy eating has become a real priority for me. With the blood-cleaning kidney thing happening, it is important for me to pay attention or I start to feel lousy. So I am reacquainted with applesauce. My sister has orchards and my mom makes applesauce. It is just made of pure apples so it has definitely become a go to treat for me. Tasty, sweet and full of nutrition. Thanks to Mom

One of the things that most us really dislike is pain. There are many versions of it including emotional and physical pain. Physically you can suffer from chronic, neverending pain, sudden acute pain, and many variations of each. My health issues bring chronic fatigue, which is mentally painful but I also suffer some intense nerve and bone pains. They seem to strike at different places on my body, from heel to hip to shoulder and a lot more. This past weekend it was my hip and it brought me to tears. I could not sit, stand or lay down with any comfort. It was very intense. After a day or two it fades and after a few days it is gone. Anyways, life is certainly about timing for me. Incidents like that one shut me right down and it is tough to do dialysis or write the paper. Pain can be debilitating and exhausting. Just saying.

Thanks to the Woodchucks A huge thanks to the two gentlemen who helped my downstairs neighbor Carl with unloading some wood. Thanks to all the folks who have helped him move in and get settled. And of course thanks to the hundreds of people who have helped me in so many ways that I cannot even list those. You are all appreciated whether I show it properly or not. Keep being awesome out there. You can make a difference for anyone.

Facelift I was going to give him a nasty look, but he already had one.

Now That’s Offensive Many of us have been brought up with completely different attitudes and views on many aspects of life. We are all different and that is okay. Lately the media has convinced us that a lot of things are offensive and that we should be erasing our own culture or beliefs to appease a few others. Most people are afraid to tell a joke or say anything as it might be deemed offensive to someone, somewhere. That is an insane form of oppression. Trying to control what others think and say is just not normal (sorry if that was offensive). I am offended by a few things. Do I expect those things to stop happening when I am around? Salt is very offensive to kidney patients. When someone asks for salt at my place my heart rate increases. But I still get them salt. That is life. It is not feasible to change who you are to try not to offend someone else. The offense part is their issue, not yours.

The Thrifty Reporter Yes, there are lots of winter activities happening in the valley. On the lake, there are events like the Snow golf, the Fishing Derby, Pond Hockey and Curling Bonspiel. What do these events have in common? You need warm clothing! It is so much fun to walk around and watch the events or take a walk on the Whiteway. However, warm clothing is a must! You must be dressed toasty warm and you know where to find all these warm coats, jackets, toques, scarves or boots. Visit the Invermere Thrift Store and you may find just what you need to keep toasty warm while you enjoy the many outdoor activities.

Good Golfing The Kinsmen Snow Golf had to adjust the tournament location at the last minute. The lake surface was unusable they moved to Setet’kwa Golf Course on the way to Radium. A huge thanks to the owners for allowing the fun to happen. Congratulations to the winners, Jimmy Ryder, Ryan Smith, Donny Devlin and Sandy Bagger took the championship with a score of -6. Congratulations to all the participants who supported the Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley. Next up is the Fishing Derby on January 25.

Make Some Cents Many business owners invest loads of money and time into starting up their businesses. You need a venue to work out of and you need to build up a stock of the products that you are offering. But many miss that next step. You have to tell everyone about your business. You can tell all of your friends and you can post all over Facebook but you are still reaching a limited audience. Your friends can only support you for so long. The Valley Peak has 1,500 friends (readers) every week. The valley and its visitors read The Valley Peak and see the ads. Advertising is very affordable ($30 or less for an ad) and very effective. 250-3417243.

Where Watson Was The photo on page 6 shows Watson helping prepare the ice for the Bonspiel on the Lake. Thanks to all the volunteers who make this event happen.

On The Lake The ice shack village down by Bayshore condos is pretty extensive this year. That is mostly because it is pretty easy access to the ice down there. There are some skating rinks cleared in the area as well as in many places on the lake. We are very lucky to have this as a venue. Please respect the lake. Clean up after yourself, your friends, your neighbours, strangers and your pets. Remember that anything you leave on the lake will end up in the lake when things melt. Thanks for caring.

Old Music I never really thought that I would consider the music from my era to be ‘old’ music as it was so timeless. I have been listening to some nice old rock lately. You know, the stuff with guitar intros, drum solos, bass licks and meaningful lyrics. Too many to list but the stuff from the 60s and 70s was a huge time in music. No computers, just natural talent. “I want to change the World, but I don’t know what to do. So I leave it up to you,” says Ten Years After. Great music and timeless meaning. I have to admit that the Internet is incredible for finding these old tunes.

Spaghetti Squash In my never-ending quest to eat a bit healthier (and still enjoy the meal) I recently became reacquainted with spaghetti squash. Obviously it can be eaten like spaghetti, a nice healthy option, but it is also a very easy option to prepare. Cut the squash in half lengthwise and scrape out the crap in the middle, leaving a ‘bowl’. Then fill the bowl with your spaghetti sauce and bake in the oven at 350 for 45 minutes. It works great. A slight variation is to microwave the halfsquash for a few minutes first and then bake for a shorter time. A cheesy option is to add shredded cheese 15 minutes before it is done. Enjoy.
