Robbie Burns Day Saturday, January 25 is Robbie Burns Day. Burns was a celebrated Scottish poet and partier. Typically folks commemorate his passing with a dinner of Scotch broth followed by a toast of Scotch whiskey to the main course, Haggis. Often bagpipes are played and a grace is said before the meal. It has become a tradition in many places around the world.

Riddliculous ‘Backwords’. These words have different meanings when spelled backwards. The clues will have the forward meaning followed by the backward meaning. Challenged a fear and coffee with no ‘pep’. A state of armed conflict and uncooked. Intelligent and trolleys. Ocean movement and correct a piece of written material. See page 9.

Station Trivia The Station Neighbourhood Pub is into year 4 or 5 of Wednesday night trivia. Jason makes it very entertaining with all the little video clips and clues (or non-clues) in the music playing. Plus he takes one question from The Valley Peak each week (that is pretty wise). Same as always, $3 gets you in and you can have up to 6 on your team. There are two rounds of twenty random questions, usually including a couple music questions and a bit of a puzzle or riddle. Cheers.

Brunch Menu ‘The View’ restaurant at Copper Point Golf Club is open Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm with a very nice brunch menu. Their hollandaise sauce is so amazing, just saying. My friend had eggs Florentine while I had a smoked salmon benny Denver sort of thing. Both were delicious. Tell them I said to give it a try. The view from The View is quite spectacular. You overlook the golf course and a nice section of the valley and mountains. The place is well-named. They are also open Thursday through Saturday from 5 pm to late with a dinner menu.

I really do not fit into this world. I spent a lot of my life very insecure and worried about what others wanted or thought. It was a tough way to live. The past 20 years or so I have felt very confident in who I am and what I have to offer in any situation. It is a good way to be. I definitely do not agree with many things happening in the world today, in our country and even in our communities. Unfortunately with today’s mob mentality it is risky to put out actual facts or your own honest opinion. Yes that is it, Honest opinions are risky. Talk about any of your own beliefs, usually based on your past experiences, your culture and your values and you can be in trouble. Someone will be offended by something and whoever is offended first and the loudest will walk away feeling the most smug or justified. Ricky Gervais said it pretty well, “You found that offensive? Well I found it funny. I guess that is why I am happier than you.” No one is out there trying to offend someone. Most of us are just trying to live our lives the way we always have.

Congratulations to the Hromadnik team on winning the ‘A’ event of the 2020 Bonspiel on the Lake. That takes 6 straight victories on some crazy ice conditions. Rylan Kashuba, Chris Deren, Rory Hromadnik and Cory Lamoureux. They are a local team that has been in the spiel for years and I believe they are past winners. Their photo is on page 9. The ‘B’ winners were the Percival team while the DuBois and Perry teams took the ‘C’ and ‘D’ events respectively. Weather conditions were quite suitable all weekend with some chills, some snowflakes and some great weather mixed in. Things went very smoothly thanks to the teams of volunteers who put it all together each year. You are all much appreciated.

There are a lot of books out there on dog behavior and how to treat and train your puppy. There are even books specifically about Bassett Hounds, the best dogs of all. It is as if we can be difficult haha. One book Rob was reading says it is never good to hug your dog. Something about threatening their feeling of dominance and blah, blah, blah. It was not very interesting for me because I love being hugged. If you have ever hugged me you would know. I moan and groan and wag my tail and lean in for more. A hug means love to me. And I love love. Love is everything to me and most dogs. Similar to people, every dog is different. Also similar to people, dogs want to be loved. Love for me comes in the form of a walk, a treat or a meal, and some good old -fashioned rubs and scratches. Pet me, hug me, talk to me. Love me. And I love meeting other dogs. I feel sorry for the ones that I am trying to meet and they are trying to meet me but their owners are pulling them back and choking them, preventing them from socializing and making friends. Of course the odd one doesn’t like me but we all get over it pretty quickly. Anyways, love your dogs, love your cats and other animals, and love your fellow humans.

FISHING DERBY SATURDAY, JAN 25 KINSMEN BEACH

This is my toughest time of year. The Lake Spiel and the Snow Golf have always been 2 of my favourite events. Something to look forward to in the middle of winter. But both require a bit of physical strength and endurance and I just don’t have that anymore. For the snow golf I really need a lot of support. I can’t make it around the course very easily without a ride. Most of my friends don’t have the energy to spare to support me with that. The Lake Spiel is something I have been a part of for 30+ years, including a couple years of doing a large part of the organizing while always playing. It has been part of my valley life forever. So it is pretty depressing watching those events carry on while I am bogged down with dialysis and survival. What used to be excited anticipation is now just dread. It is hard to be really happy for everyone else while I am having my own little pity party. As it turns out, life rarely takes us where we are hoping to go. It just takes us and it is up to our brains to finish the journey. No one else is supposed to step up and try to make me happy. That is my responsibility.

Health Care So last week I had a video ‘clinic’ with my kidney team. That includes my pharmacist, a social worker, a nurse and a nephrologist (kidney specialist). As a team we try to find the healthiest balance of my diet and treatments. It can be tricky with my cancer and my kidney failure. Much of the food healthy for one issue is the opposite for the other. A lot of antioxidant, cancer-fighting foods are very high in potassium, a strong no-no with kidney failure. I have to make decisions and advocate for those choices. My kidney failure was the indicator of my multiple myeloma. While trying to find out the cause of the kidney crash, my nephrologist found my cancer. And told me about it in a very casual, pass by me in the hall, sort of way. It wasn’t casual for me. It was devastating. Very devastating. I wasn’t even sure I had heard him correctly. So at last week’s meeting, when I mentioned vitamin D for my cancer, and he said, “You have cancer? What kind?”, I was again very distraught. The person in charge of my health care had no clue about one of my main issues, which he diagnosed. That really sucks, doesn’t it? Where do you turn from there? I still will likely need him as a kidney specialist so I can’t really fire him.

A Real Scientist If you have interest in climate change (crisis/emergency, etc), I suggest you research Dr. Patrick Moore. He is a founder of Greenpeace and was one of the world’s first ‘eco-terrorists’ who stood in front of hydrogen bombs, whaling harpoons and more. He is a very qualified scientist who loves the environment. He has some ideas on climate change. Do you have the gumption and open-mindedness to check him out? Or check out Susan Crockford, the world leader on polar bears that used to be part of the team at the University of Victoria. Real scientists, not political pawns.

Healthy Communities Start at Home

I am not a very good sleeper. When kidney failure first started kicking in I was itchy and unsettled all the time. I would have to take walks in my pajamas during the night to cool down and regroup. It was lousy. With that, my bladder was always full also. I would have to urinate every hour and a half. Then I would not be able to go back to sleep. Really, I never slept. Lately that seems to be returning. The itchiness has never completely gone away and often I will go to bed, get an itch, and have a panic attack. My brain will not relax. There is this awful feeling of foreboding in my mind as soon as I lay down. I think I am afraid to fall asleep. It is very strange and very exhausting. Lots of daytime nodding off, especially on the computer writing this. Welcome to zombieland. Anyway, I pray to the Lord that this passes somehow. I need better sleep.

The Columbia Valley Rockies are still sitting strongly in third place in their division with a win and a loss on the road in Chase and Sicamous this past weekend. It was a solid road trip. This weekend the Rockies visit Creston on Friday before returning home to host the Beaver Valley Nitehawks on Saturday, January 25, at 7 pm. This is their final home game of January and that means only a month until the playoffs begin. The Rockies are playing strong hockey headed into the last part of the season. What are you up to on Saturday night? Round up a few friends or the kids and go enjoy an exciting night of junior hockey. The players would love to hear your voice in the stands cheering them on plus you have a chance to win a few things. Enjoy your community.

Unfamiliar Faces It is always entertaining in winter when you bump in to people on the street or out on the lake and they are covered in warm clothing. Toques, balaclavas, scarfs, huge coats, gloves and more. And then this bundle of whoever says, “Hey Rob” and carries on past me. I have no idea who it was. Not even a guess. I will often say, “Hi,” back, but if I don’t say your name with it, then you are likely one of those bundles of warmth. You are invited to join other adults aspiring to enhance love and acceptance in all their relationships, beginning with themselves. A 3 part Workshop Series, Relationship Recipes, is being facilitated this winter, by Crisanna MacLeod. Understanding your Dreams workshop offers teens and adults a proven formula to recall, record and understand their personal dream pictures. During four February and two March sessions, participants learn and practice original, practical skills, combined with familiar ideas; returning the following week with results to be discussed in the confidential workshop time. A new openness, fun and safety are enhanced in all their relationships. Page 3.

I Am This Country

All dogs over the age of four months residing in the District of Invermere require an annual dog license, from January 1 to December 31.

(From page 4) I am Denmark and I am actually part of a Kingdom including Greenland and the Faroe Islands. I have a constitutional monarchy including a Queen and a parliament.

Licensing allows Animal Control Services to contact you as soon as possible if your animal has been impounded or if the animal has been injured as a result of traffic or other causes.

Electrical Specialist Do you need an electrician? Sometimes they are hard to track down here in the valley. Give Dean from Kootenay Country Electrical a call. He has more than 20 years of experience and a lot of certification. He knows his stuff. He is an efficient, hard-worker and will take on any job of any size. Call 250-342-5516.

Edgewater Soup Remember that the last Friday of every month (January 31) brings the soup and bun luncheon by the Edgewater Seniors. It is a fantastic meal with a choice of homemade soups, fresh buns and biscuits, sweet desserts. The luncheon is now located at the Edgewater Community Hall. The luncheon is now $8, still an amazing deal for the meal you get.

Time for Love Valentine’s Day is creeping up on us quickly. What is the perfect gift? I surely don’t know. But LoveWinx has some great ideas. They offer many wonderful couples’ products. Jen offers private consultations or party bookings but even better, you can check it out online at www.jenx.lovewinx.com.

Plastic Bags So it is happening here in Invermere. AG Valley Foods (my client) and other stores (not my clients so not named here) are removing plastic check out bags from their systems. At Valley Foods you will be able to purchase a recyclable bag for 99 cents or paper bags for 10 cents. Let’s all do our part to help our planet.

The Coral Reef is not collapsing. The Australian marine biologist who proves it has lost his job. Strange isn’t it? And people are convinced that the carbon monoxide from their car exhaust is the same as carbon dioxide, the main building block of life. Carbon dioxide is critical in our atmosphere as it is combined with water by plants to produce our oxygen and sugars (our building blocks). That is basic biology/ ecology/chemistry and more. Optimum CO2 levels are much higher than where we are now. But that is all stuff that politicians and government agencies, combined with their media, have been working hard to fool us with. That stuff is real science.

Work Ethics Too “When Abe Lincoln was your age, he was studying books by the light of the fireplace,” said the father. “Yes, but when he was your age, he was President,” replied the son.

Climate Denier Apparently that is me. I have this weird obsession with real facts and data. I am a biologist so I guess I am in the ‘3%’ of nonbelieving scientists hahaha. Of course the 97% are government funded to prove it is true and no one can name any of them. Just keep repeating 97%. Anyways polar bears are at an all-time high in population. The UVIC professor that showed that has lost her job and nothing is on the media. Strange isn’t it?
