Tasty “The two things I cook best are meat loaf and apple pie,” said the new wife. “Which one is this?” asked the husband.
Dharma Teaching The public is invited to a teaching that will be given by the Venerable Gurudev Hamsah Nandatha at the Adi Vajra Shambhasalem Ashram in Wasa, BC on May 16 at 6:30 pm. In this lecture, entitled “Exiting Samsara… the Ocean of Suffering”, the Ashram’s Spiritual Instructor will teach us how to exit suffering and reach a state of peace and equilibrium, in spite of life’s adverse circumstances. Venerable Gurudev Hamsah Nandatha
Volume 17 Issue 20 occasionally gives Dharma teachings such as this, offering us the rare opportunity to benefit from the Wisdom and Radiance of a true Realized Being. For information, call 250-420-1562 or email ashram@adivajra.ca.

There’s a shuttle to save you parking stress and get you home safely afterward.
Best Bread Andi Schöni will be setting up his booth with wood oven artisan bread every Saturday throughout the summer. You will find him at Frater Landing, the same location as last year from 10 am until the bread is gone. I suggest you try the garlic cheddar sourdough. Just leave a loaf for me please. And some scones. He starts this Saturday, May 18.

HAVE A FUN MAY LONG WEEKEND PLAY SAFELY
Okay so now it is the May Long Weekend. People all over Canada have been planning camping trips and other getaways all spring. And many from Western Canada are planning on being in the Columbia Valley this weekend. What are your plans for the weekend? Many locals make a break for the back country this weekend, hoping to get away from the business. Others plan on a trip to the city or are off to visit relatives. And then there are those whose incomes are based on the tourism industry. This is a huge weekend for them and they will be working hard. I hope that everyone has a fantastic weekend, whether working or recreating. This weekend is a great chance for our valley to shine. Please treat everyone with respect and tolerance. Everyone is on a separate journey and for our visitors, the Columbia Valley is one of the best parts of their life journey and they only get a brief time here. We are very lucky to live here and that should show in our daily attitudes and activities. Enjoy your long weekend and help other folks enjoy theirs.

Rob and I have been getting lots of exercise in our time together. The walks have done us both some good. But I like to work on Rob’s agility as well. He can’t cross the room without some form of evasive maneuver. I’m low and long so he has to do a lot of high-stepping to get past me. I cover a lot of floor space. Balance is also important. I’m close behind him so I trip him up whenever he steps back. His balance and recovery moves have really improved over the few months that we have been together. I can block a door like no other. I act like I am trying to help, but really, I am just making it a bit tougher. If we add balance issues to the mix, things are twice as tricky. And voice projection. I like to pretend that I can’t hear my name sometimes so Rob has developed a special ‘tone’ that is a bit more effective. He could be an actor with that voice ability. It really carries. Chat next week.

It’s something we’ve come to expect from our viking hosts at Ullr: a decadent food event, plus music. They have been filling the place with some great ideas. On Sunday, May 19 that means a free pig roast at 6 pm, followed by a night of dancing to music from local stars Small Town Dirtbags. Make it a great night out with your buds. Tell your bartender ‘The Valley Peak’ sent you. It won’t get you a discount or anything, but you might get a smile and I’d appreciate a chance at a new advertising client.

Kidney Failure
Hearth2Home
WETT Certified Chimney Sweep, Inspector & Installer. Please contact R.J. @ 587-784-2446 to book today!
One of the crappier aspects of kidney failure is the constant little touch up surgeries and visits with health professionals. I have had four different access lines put into my body, two for peritoneal dialysis and two for hemodialysis. The doctors have been suggesting another access called a fistula. They join an artery and a vein to make a ‘super’ vessel and bring it near the surface (usually of the arm). Then I would be required to ‘needle’ myself to insert lines for hemodialysis. They say this reduces chances of infections and allows for higher blood flow. So far I have seen several fistulas in action in the renal units and nothing about it looks appealing. The needles themselves are quite larger than a normal injection-type needle. It looks pretty tricky to me. The nurses like them more for a few reasons but most of the patients seem unhappy with it. It does allow for swimming and easier shower, one of the main issues with the catheter port I have in my chest. I have to cover four different dressings and ports to shower right now. I find it easier to just never sweat.

Today I meet by phone with a surgeon regarding removing a catheter from my belly area. It was used for peritoneal dialysis but has become obsolete for me. Peritoneal dialysis never really cleared all my toxins effectively. It would leave high levels of urea and creatinine. Creatinine is a muscle waste product and high levels cause muscle fatigue. I always felt like I had just run a marathon with my legs. Now that the levels have been lowered with hemodialysis, my strength is returning. Thanks to Watson and all the walks, my legs are getting there. My arms are still pretty weak. Lowering my urea levels has allowed my body to heal much better from the chemotherapy. Now that my body isn’t just fighting itself for survival, it is healing much better. I have to keep an eye on my levels of phosphorous, potassium, sodium and so much more. It is very related to the foods that I eat. Healthy food for you is rarely healthy for me with no kidneys.

Doing It Right
I think I am at the point that my main issues with all of this health stuff are mental and emotional. I get a lot of depressing moments when I am doing something and realizing my capabilities are so much less than before. It is exciting to be regaining some strength and abilities but overall, it just is not there. I hate that I need help with a lot of physical stuff yet I have to be humble and ask for or accept help on a daily basis. The blue bottles of water are a great example. Sadly I have had ladies from the grocery store help me out. I always preferred helping others. I appreciate the staff who see me get started and just come over and offer to help. Overall it leads to thinking less of myself. Almost daily something happens to remind me of my issues. I have lots of support from friends who just know what to do but there are other buddies that I need to call and ask for favours. They have no idea how difficult that is to do.

The ‘Clash of the Titans’ is a huge soccer tournament hosted here in Invermere. On the weekend of May 24 to 26, hundreds of players and fans will descend on Invermere for this event. It is so well-organized that it continues to grow each year. Get up to the Mount Nelson Athletic Park to welcome our guest and support our hosts, the Invermere Titans. Thanks to all the volunteers involved.
It Was That Year (From page 4) In 1967, Montreal hosted Expo to help celebrate Canada’s centennial. A house cost $14,250, average annual income was $7,300, minimum wage was $1.40/hr and a new car was worth $2,750. The Toronto Maple Leafs won their last Stanley Cup, Pamela Anderson was born, Vivian Leigh died and the World’s first heart transplant took place.

Sunny Days
In the Garden
The weather has been incredible lately. Shirt sleeves and shorts are seen everywhere. I have even considered shorts. Research shows the importance of sunshine and vitamin D in our bodies. Most Canadians do not get enough sun. Get outside folks. Enjoy where we live and the amazing weather that we are having. It just feels good.
For gardeners, the May long weekend is considered the official start of planting season. Mother Nature won’t dare send us frost after May 20. Planting seeds and transplanting seedlings is an exercise in planning for the future. The garden looks too bare, with those little plants (or invisible seeds) spaced so far apart. But experienced gardeners know to resist planting too closely. Crowding your seeds forces them to compete for food, water and sunlight, leading to weak, leggy plants. Most plants need a good square foot (or more) of space to call their own. Even carrot and beet seeds need at least few inches of room, which means pulling out extra plants once they’ve sprouted. I guess all living things like their personal space.
Glass Art & More Effusion Gallery celebrates its 11th anniversary this weekend (May 18 to 20), with special guest artist Heather Cuell on hand with brand new glass creations. There will also be new spring work from all the gallery’s artists. Stroll in and take a look. It is very beautiful and some of the work reaches into your heart. You might find the perfect piece for your own wall or display shelf.
Where I Was The photo on page 6 shows a beautiful mountain lake in the Columbia Valley. This could be one of many places that I imagine the locals will be visiting this weekend.

I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A FANTASTIC LONG WEEKEND TO START OFF A GREAT SUMMER.
May-long Mantra This is the first busy weekend for most local folks after a cozy winter, and it can be stressful. Let’s all inhale that mountain air, stare at the view and do our best to share our small-town culture with this first tsunami of visitors. Longer line-ups and traffic chaos for a few months of the year are a small price to pay for living in this incredible community. Make our guests feel welcome and wanting to return again and again.
Car Rally Volunteers The Rocky Mountain Rally returns May 2426. Organizers are looking for volunteers to help out with the event from May 23-27. Almost 90 marshal and radio positions need to be filled. No prior experience is needed for many of the roles, but if you have talents in marketing, PR, sponsorship or as a marshal then those skills are in demand. Perks include food, admission to special events, discounted accommodation, and exclusive access to the teams and tracks. If you like seeing cars and their teams pushed to their limits, this is the volunteer gig for you. Go to www.rockymountainrally.com to get signed up.
