Meteor Shower The Eta Aquarids meteor shower will reach its peak in the wee hours of this Sunday, May 5. It is created by debris from Halley’s Comet. It will be average viewing conditions with about half a moon in the sky to brighten things up. The best viewing time is predawn. Get out of town away from artificial lights and prepare to relax and wait. Shooting stars are easy to see but you must be patient. In the northern hemisphere we are set to see 10 to 20 per hour and if we are lucky there will be a couple of ‘stargrazers’ that cross the whole sky.

Life brings many changes. I grew up in a small West Kootenay town (Castlegar) which is quite similar to Invermere. Lots of outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, swimming, boating, biking, golfing and more. But like most youth, I hated it. I couldn’t wait to get away to University and the big city. Crazy isn’t it? I did several years in Vancouver, Victoria and Calgary. Chasing the mighty dollar so I could experience the ‘exciting’ night life or go to a concert, hockey/football game, a fancy restaurant or whatever. Maybe I could even save enough to get out to visit friends in Invermere and do some camping, fishing, etc. Now here I am, back in paradise, inviting my poor (all they have is money and the desire for more) city friends to experience this place with me. Some of them just love to work to try to ‘get ahead’. I feel very rich (although money for stinking bills is always a concern) yet I survive on a fairly meager income. But I do have an amazing dog, a fishing rod, bike, camping gear, golf clubs, hiking boots and more. I wake up in paradise every day, choosing how to get out there and enjoy myself. Lucky, lucky, lucky. We all have a lot to be grateful for and life feels much better when we remember that.
Hereditary I can’t help but be lazy. Laziness walks in my family.

If you get out to events in the valley that you read about here in The Valley Peak, please let them know that this is where you saw it. Thanks for reading and supporting The Valley Peak.

Dog Walking
Email rob@valleypeak.ca
It is important for all you pet owners to pay attention to changes in the behavior of your animals. We can’t talk very well so we have to let you know in other ways. Is your dog curling up a bit more tightly when it is laying down? That is often a sign of something bothering it, maybe some kind of pain. Is it eating its food a bit differently? Might be a tooth ache or an upset stomach or any kind of stress. You know how things can go when you don’t feel well. Is he a bit despondent on your walks or during play time? That could mean something more than just getting old (like me). Make sure you give your pet lots of physical contact. That allows you to feel if they have a painful spot, or even more importantly, maybe a tick. It is definitely the time of year for ticks and many folks are finding them on themselves or on their animals. They like to get into our armpits, between our toes or maybe behind the ears. You know, the warm spots. Have a pawsome week everyone.

Kidney Failure All is as good as it can be for me. I don’t get out as much as I would like due to being busy with dialysis and prep for dialysis but I do still get out. Kidney disease is known as the ‘silent killer’. My earliest sign was itchiness. Everywhere on my body. Unstoppable. It was awful. Other symptoms are fatigue, changes in thirst and urination patterns. Pain and swelling in the ankles is bad. Panic attacks and weird thoughts are a sign of toxins in your blood that are affecting your brain. I was short of breath and having serious sleep issues. So yeah, if you are feeling any of these, or at least a combination of a couple of them, get yourself checked out.

My life has really changed since my collapse from kidney failure and subsequent multiple myeloma diagnosis. A lot. Things that used to be easy to do have now become projects that need to be carefully planned out. An afternoon of fishing is a lot more work than I remember. But it sure seems worth the effort if I am lucky enough to hook into a little trout or two. If there is an upcoming event that I would like to attend, I have to schedule my hemodialysis around the event which can sometimes be tricky. I am slowly regaining my strength but still need help with a few things. I have lost a lot of weight, some from eating healthy and some from the cancer. Most of the loss is based on muscle tissue and takes a while to regain. I am fitting into much smaller waistlines now, which I did need haha. Conversations have really changed for me. Many folks are pretty open about their own health issues which is always good for healing. And I do find myself noticing beautiful things around me much more. Nature is beautiful, God is amazing.
Weight Program I have been trying to avoid anything that makes me fat. Too bad there are mirrors and scales everywhere.

My Progress So my oncology visit was uneventful other than some bloodwork results were still pending, but I Iook great and my lungs sound perfect. But the doctor called on Friday with the final results and they are very encouraging. The main protein indicator shows the myeloma has recessed even more during the last couple of months. Thanks to many things. I have spoken of cannabis oil many times. And I know I have mentioned vitamin D (thanks to the support of Pure North S’Energy, a natural clinic in Calgary) plus Omega 3, Alpha lipoic acid and more. Paying attention and taking charge of my health care was important, including a much healthier eating plan (could still do better). And prayer (many people have prayed and continue to pray for me from many places). Thank you for that folks. They say that multiple myeloma never goes away and will always come back with a vengeance but it appears that I will be okay for a bit anyways.

Youth Open Mic: Last Call The valley’s youth open mic series, Fresh Fridays, is about to wrap up: they have two more Friday nights booked at Pynelogs, on May 3 and 31. Don’t miss out on a great evening of impressive local musical talent. These young people have practiced and work hard to put on a good show. The night starts at 7 pm, with admission by donation and all ages welcome. There’s a cash bar too. Thanks again to Oso Simple.
Real-life Treasure Hunt There are dozens of containers hidden all over the Columbia Valley, with hundreds of thousands over the world. Hunting for them with your phone app or GPS is called “geocaching,” and it’s a great, familyfriendly way to discover scenic views, historical spots and attractions. It’s also a great way to get yourself (or the kids or grandkids) outdoors. The Invermere Library is holding a free introduction to geocaching workshop on Thursday, May 9 at 6 pm. Register for the workshop by calling 342-6416. If you love problem solving and treasure hunts, this one’s for you.

Eat for Friends of KNP Friends of Kootenay National Park are the lucky charitable recipient of Give Back Sunday this week at the Horsethief Creek Pub. Invite a friend for lunch or dinner on Sunday, May 5, and 15% of your food bill will be donated to the organization. The money will support the Junior Naturalist Program, the Wild Voices Speaker Series, Knapweed Pulls, Headbanger Tours, the Sponsor a Bighorn Program, and more. Be generous and order dessert too.
Where I Was The photo on page 6 shows me in one of my favourite places. Out on my front deck hanging with the hound.
Junior Rangers Hike Families are invited to be part of the first ever Junior Rangers hike on Sunday, May 5. The group will explore the Old Coach Trail starting at 1 pm, with nature BINGO to keep the kiddos amused on the 2 hour stroll. The trail is great for bikes and hikers, as well as strollers except for some bumpy patches. It’s $5 per family to play BINGO.

Cream Parlour lately? They have some fantastic pizza and they also have a lot of other wonderful things. Try their fresh salads or tender ribs. You will love their homemade desserts (some gluten free options). I love the ‘Volcano’, a fudge brownie with your choice of ice cream and chocolate sauce. Or try one of the ‘Screamin Brothers’ allergy-friendly ice creams. They are dairy-free, gluten-free and soy-free. And they taste great.

Cinco de Mayo The ‘Fifth of May’ is celebrated in Mexico every year. They say it is the biggest holiday celebration that no one really understands. It actually represents a huge battle victory over invading France which took place on May 5, 1862. France eventually won the war but the much smaller Mexican army held them back successfully in the Battle of Pueblo.

Let Them Know Communication is an important part of any relationship, whether personal or professional. I try to be pretty open in most of my discussions. Often I come across pretty harsh but that is never my intention. It is always best to face issues early in a relationship. If a coworker is causing you dismay then you should decide what you want to do about it. If you cannot accept it, then discuss it. The same goes with a friend, family member or anyone that is part of your life.
The more I look at my Swiss Army knife, the more I realize why the Swiss Army never gets involved in combat. Plenty of folks are on Facebook, but how can you use it to grow your business? Mountain Hub is hosting a lunch and learn session on Tuesday, May 7 to answer this question. Learn about Facebook ads and how to include Facebook in your marketing strategy. The session is $20 and runs from noon to 1 pm. These ‘lunch and learns’ are always inspiring and helpful.
