Mom’s Golf Free Happy Mother’s Day from Coys Par 3. On Sunday, May 12, Mom golfs free with the purchase of the breakfast buffet or the burger special. That is a great day. The food at Coys is always fantastic and the golf is, well, golf. Easy, hard, fun, frustrating, always a nice walk and more. It is a great little course that is always a lot of fun with some challenge. Book Mom’s day at 250-345-6504.

Valley Voices Performances by our Valley Voices choir are always a big hit. They will be doing their spring concert on two evenings at Christ Church Trinity, on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11, starting at 7:30 pm. Get your $5/10 tickets early at Big Horn Cafe, Purple Cow Gift Shop or Inspire Boutique in Invermere. This could be the perfect gift for the mom in your life: a concert, plus time with you. A reception will follow both performances.

Yuk Yuk’s Comedians Radium is a favourite stop on the Yuk Yuk’s tour, thanks to the Horsethief Creek Pub and all the laughter-loving folks who come out for the shows. The next comedy

night is on Saturday, May 11, with Sharon Mahoney and Eric Amber on stage. Tickets are on sale now for $15. The laughs start at 9 pm. Call up a friend and go for dinner too. You deserve some belly laughs.

Thoughtless Never worry about what other people are thinking. They don’t do it very often.

Wasa Quilt Show & Tea Head to the Wasa Community Hall on Friday, May 10 or Saturday, May 11 for a quilt show and tea. There will be raffles, vendors, door prizes and lunch available starting at 11 am. The show ends at 7 pm on Friday, 4 pm on Saturday. We have some very talented quiltmakers in the East Kootenays and it’s inspiring to see what they can design and create. If you’re looking for a unique Mother’s Day outing, this is it.

Canal Flats Yard Sale Canal Flats is having a huge community garage sale on Saturday, May 11. If you’re in the mood to hunt for bargains (or maybe driving to or from Wasa for the quilt show and tea), pull off the highway to check it out. The sale runs from 10 am to 2 pm.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

Happy Mother’s Day folks. It is a big day of the year for those ladies who have helped us from before day one in our lives. Respecting Mom is a good thing every day. I seem to fail at that. My Mom, Edie, puts a lot of effort into helping her kids, even though we are all full grown adults. You never stop needing your Mom. We only think we do haha. My Mom is from a completely different generation so we do not always see eye to eye. Almost never actually. But that does not stop her from loving me. When I am going to visit her she makes huge efforts to have my favourite groceries in the fridge (lactose-free milk, etc.), my room is cleaned and sterilized and so much more. She cooks my favourite meals, chases my dirty laundry and feeds, walks and loves Watson when I am busy at the hospital. She and I have completely different opinions on just about everything out there. I am sure many of us have that going on. But she still loves me and that matters a lot. I love her but really do not show it enough. It is tricky when we live so far apart. But we did a lot of time together when I was very sick last year. I think all that most moms want is just to see and hear from their kids more often. To spend some time with them to see that they are doing okay. Anyways, Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there, especially my Mom.

I am loving this time of year. The weather allows us to get out for so many more walks. And longer ones. Everything is fresh and new. The grass is getting softer on my paws, the blossoms are releasing their sweet scents and more. We were in the West Kootenay for a few days last week and everything was starting to blossom. Creston was beautiful. With spring and growth comes tick season. Rob has seen a lot of photos of ticks and he had one last year. Found it on his neck during dialysis at the hospital about 10 hours after we had been somewhere that a tick might be. It was a good learning experience. What is good about tick season? The time Rob spends rubbing me from head to toe, in every little nook and cranny. It feels amazing and I don’t want him to stop. Who doesn’t like a good massage? I hope all you hounds out there are getting the same treatment. I will note that Rob seems to get a lot of enjoyment out of doing the massaging. Touch is very therapeutic for people (and dogs). It clears the mind, reduces stress and just feels good.

Email rob@valleypeak.ca Kidney Failure

Well I have been writing about kidney failure (from my perspective) for quite some time now. I am not sure what more I can tell you but I shall carry on for a couple more weeks. I myself went into acute (sudden) kidney failure a year and a half ago. I missed a few signs or symptoms, as did the new doctor I visited. They call kidney disease the ‘silent killer’ and I get it. Now I do anyways. Many other people do get diagnosed with kidney disease at different stages of the disease. For the very early ones it can just be a matter of changing their eating habits (goodbye salt). For others that also includes medications. Eventually it can mean a surgery to prepare for dialysis of one form or another. For me it was emergency surgery and on hemodialysis the next day. That is a unique, but not unheard of experience. I wish all of you good long term kidney health.

My Progress As noted last week, my multiple myeloma seems to be backing off a bit more in the last few months. I am thinking that if I continue to eat healthy (healthier than before anyways), carry on with my naturopathic treatments (I will always mention cannabis oil) and stay confident that I can deal with this. A friend once noted that it is not really about beating cancer, it is about learning to live with it. To me that means it is a part of my body that I must always treat properly to keep it in its place. And really, since it is mostly about whole body health and the immune system, I guess I should treat my whole body and my immune system with care. I have found that is a bit easier to wrap my head around it now that my mortality has become involved. Eat healthy, really.

The Thrifty Reporter Whoa!! I have heard that the Invermere Thrift Store has had to increase their garbage pickup to twice a week. It was only once a week but not all items dropped off for donations are sellable. Therefore, the garbage schedule had to be doubled and since they pay for garbage pickup, that doubles the cost of this service. I do not believe this is fair to them. Please only donate items you know you would spend money on. Thank-you.

Things have settled down pretty good as good, regular, home hemodialysis seems to be helping me regain strength which is also good in the living with my cancer adventure. Fear is still a big factor in all of this. Any time I feel any pain I have to wonder if it is related to bone degeneration. A tough mental game but things are great so far. Confidence is a huge factor is healing. I have found that openness is a pretty good aspect of this for me. By writing about my health issues I find many folks are willing to chat about health. Lots of folks have advice and often it is quite helpful. It is always worth listening to. Plus I have learned that many folks have issues going on. Lots have kidney issues, even more have cancer issues. We are a pretty big team out there. But living each day knowing how quick it all changes has also been a great side effect. That is one thing we should all try more often. Long term plans may not always work out so enjoy the present.

Radium Firefighters Fundraiser Radium’s volunteer firefighters put many hours, energy and funds into the village’s annual New Year’s Eve fireworks displays, the very popular annual children’s Christmas party and much more. Let’s show our support for these folks on Sunday, May 12, when 15% of all food sales at the Horsethief Creek Pub will be donated to the Radium Volunteer Firefighters. Go for lunch or dinner and say “thank you.”

It Was That Year (From page 4) In the year 2004, an average house cost $275,000 and the average annual income was $45,800. Shrek 2 was released as was Janet Jackson’s breast during halftime of the Super Bowl, the first private space flight (SpaceShipOne) took place and Paul Martin defeated Stephen Harper for Prime Minister.

Need a place for your company next weekend? Check out the classifieds on page 2 for a 1-week timeshare at Mountainside for only $900. It starts on the Saturday of the long weekend. Mountainside Villas are very nice. I have stayed there a few times. Great rec centre, great staff, and wonderful villas on the golf course.

Parent & Tot Play Time With unpredictable spring weather, it’s good to have an indoor play option for the kids. Family Dynamix offers a free Parent & Tot Play Program at the gym at 7511 Columbia Avenue in Radium. Young kids and their parents (or grandparents) are invited to drop in from 9:30 to 11:30 am on Thursdays, May 9 and 16. Get those energetic kids running around.

Board Governance Tips If you’re a volunteer board member or work with board members, check out the board governance workshop on Saturday, May 11. Deb McClelland will be in town to talk about terms of reference, roles and responsibilities, agendas, policies and other things that make sense to people acting on boards. The workshop runs from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at the CV Chamber building and costs $45 (or $40 for chamber members). Sign up by calling 342-2844.

Whisper Whisper My friend asked why I speak so softly. I said I was afraid the government was listening. He laughed, I laughed, Siri and Alexa laughed.
