Feed the Town This is the 15th year of the annual Feed the Town fundraiser for the Food Bank: you do not want to miss this event, which runs from noon until 7 pm. Please try to bring at least one nonperishable food item or a cash donation to the Copper Point Golf Club this Sunday, December 2, then enjoy an excellent traditional holiday feast with all the trimmings, served up by volunteers. Santa will be there for visits and photos. The meal is always fantastic and it’s a wonderful community event, not to mention a huge help to the food bank, which is extra busy at this time of the year. Writing The Valley Peak requires a lot of flipping through little inspirational books to find words of wisdom, sports trivia, brain drain questions or riddles. It is very time consuming but it can also be quite an interesting adventure. One of the more common themes in the wise words category is the statement that ‘the best way to have a good day yourself is to ensure that someone else has a good day’. Go a step further today to make someone else’s day a bit more pleasant. Carry a parcel, hold a door or mow a lawn, anything to help. Find a volunteer position, there are many out there, and feel good helping people. Just smile and compliment someone. It is amazing what a kind word can do to help us get through each day. I know that my attitude for the day changes instantly when I am given a smile or a compliment. I also love hearing someone tell me, “You just made my day.” When all I did was give them a sincere compliment. Make it so that everyone that you meet today is glad that they crossed your path. Make so you are the person that they hope to bump into every single day. Just be kind, giving, loving and grateful. Then try the same thing tomorrow. If it goes well, you may even do it the next day. Enjoy your life and help others enjoy theirs.
Repent With the New Year approaching, I really don’t want to end this year on bad terms with anyone. So I think you better get your apologies to me quickly.

So many of my friends tell me that their owners love to read these articles. They like to know what their dogs are thinking about. Lately I am thinking about poo, feces, doggy-doo, etc. You know, all that crap out there. I have written about how Rob seems to enjoy picking my business up after me because he does it a lot but lately I see it really does not give him much joy. He seems happy when I go but he still has to bag it. We both are very surprised by the number of piles we find out there that are not being picked up. I can understand that in some remote places, out in nature, but in playgrounds, parks, school yards, on sidewalks, in sports fields or in someone’s yard. No way! That is not acceptable. It is just lazy and disrespectful and it gives us a bad name. We see a lot of dog poop in bad spots. I am very glad that you have and love a dog and get it out for walks but if you are not going to clean up after it, then walk somewhere that no other people will be around to have to look at it or, heaven forbid, step in it. It is not that difficult to be respectful. Thanks to all the responsible owners who make us all look good. Shame on the lazy, entitled ones who make us look bad. Nothing sticks like dog poo in the grooves of a shoe.

Thanks to all the folks who comment on these articles. Inspiring. I thought I would talk a bit about my health history prior to cancer and kidney failure. I was always a big guy, over 6 feet tall and 20 to 60 pounds overweight. I was active enough that I was in okay shape but my eating habits were never the best and for years my doctors had suggested change. You know, the same path as many folks. About 4 years ago I was told I had developed type 2 diabetes and given some options, one of which was completely change my lifestyle. The doctor wasn’t all that happy with that choice as it was a big change for anyone, especially at fat fifty year-old (or so). I cut sugar out of my life as best I could, began walking daily (3 times daily since Watson), lost 45 pounds and basically beat diabetes. I felt great and it was so much easier than I thought. Diabetes strains the kidneys and often leads to kidney failure. Many renal patients are also diabetics. Mine failed due to multiple myeloma but I am betting that they were a bit compromised by then and went down easier than they should have. I do not want to see any of you go through any of this adventure so I am asking you to please take care of yourselves.
ROAD TRIP TIME The Columbia Valley Rockies are on the road until December 11. We will be visiting Grand Forks, Spokane, Creston and Nelson before our next home game. Thanks for all the Fan Support You make a difference. Like an extra player.

One of the first things you find out when your kidneys fail is that you have to really watch what you eat. Really. You have no filter for toxins so you have to watch what toxins you consume. A lot of otherwise healthy foods are off limits due to potassium content. But that is an old story. The important part of this is that you quickly learn to eat a lot more fresh food. Very little healthy ‘food’ comes in a package. It is all about cooking your own food. That was a great feature to being back at Mom’s place, the healthy meals, every meal. No shortcuts and cheating, just a nice balanced diet. You really learn to plan meals ahead. That has been a great side effect. Learning to think about my meals quite a bit differently. Thanks also to all the folks who have provided me with food and meals. With hours of dialysis every day it is nice to be able to have a quick and healthy meal around.

Bring your donation to Local View in the Industrial Park, or call Sonja at 342-9470. You can make a difference. The fireworks show starts at 8 pm, with fire pits and hot chocolate also happening at the Wilmer Hall. Make sure you include a Christmas light cruise through the community this winter: Wilmerites are famous for their incredible house lights and decorations.
Bonspiel on the Lake The Curling Centre is beginning to put the Lake Spiel together now. If you are an entrant then you should have received an email asking you to confirm. This is a very large event and difficult to organize so it would be great if you would do your part and reply to your email or call in to confirm your attendance this year. It would make organizing so much easier. Lots of volunteer positions will also be available for you to help fill.

My oncology tests and appointments are coming up pretty quickly now. Another week or so and I will have a better idea what is happening with my bone marrow. It will be two and a half months since my last chemo (no break on cannabis oil, vitamin D, turmeric, lemon water, etc). I am nervously excited as I do understand that it is in their best financial interest to find something going wrong with me. As for my kidneys, I am not quite able to keep my urea levels low enough with peritoneal dialysis only so I am off for the occasional hemodialysis run in Cranbrook. Hopefully once a month will suffice. This may lead to doing both peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis at home as a hybrid combination. It gets a bit complicated from there. Oh well. Progress.

Ceremonies will be held at 6:30 pm at Invermere’s Frater Landing, the Canal Flats Village Office, Fairmont’s Lions’ Den, and Radium’s new Civic Centre. Lights at Fairmont Resort
Sleep for Health
Looking for a magical holiday experience? Once again, Fairmont Hot Springs Resort has gone all out with the lights and holiday displays this year. It’s free to wander indoors and out and enjoy the sights. Invite a friend or bring the family to share the magic.
They say that one of the most important aspects of a healthy lifestyle is to get enough sleep. People who are feeling tired tend to look for an energy boost to help get things going. Often this is in the form of high-sugar drink. One of these a day increases your likelihood of developing diabetes by 80%. Try eating an apple for energy. They contain enzymes that activate the brain, plus some natural sugar and fibre. It is very good for you. But more importantly, get lots of sleep. We need it.
Christmas Parties The Curling Centre is an incredible place for a party. Rental is based on how many folks attend and can include ice time with curling lessons or just the rental of the lounge. Beverages are very affordable and the lounge includes pool, darts, shuffleboard, foosball and more. It makes for a very fun time. Call 250-342-3315.
Salad Thoughts The Romaine Empire is done. Caesar is dead. Lettuce pray.
Youth Open Mic Some of the valley’s most talented youth take over the stage at Pynelogs on Friday, November 30. the doors open at 7 pm. All ages are welcome. This is the last Fresh Fridays night until February 1, so don’t miss it.
Marketing Magic I am loving the feedback that I have received lately from some of my advertising clients. The Valley Peak definitely works. Why does it work? It is affordable ($25-$30) for an ad. It is very well-read. You are reading it right now. Nearly 2,000 readers, local and not, read every issue every week. And they read it all, not just a quick skim. Posting on Facebook or a bulletin board may get you a couple hundred views but nothing compares to the coverage and views you get in The Valley Peak. 250-341 -7243.
FAIRMONT
Valley Culture Living in a small town means chatting with the folks you run into around town and at events, including people you don’t know yet. It is nice to discover who has similar interests. Many good events include an intermission, so we can continue the conversations we began before the event started or talk to other friends. That rumble of voices, as people connect and make new friends and catch up with old ones, makes me smile every time.
Everyday Edibles Part 2 Happening this Sunday Dec 2, at 2 pm or Tuesday Dec 4, at 7 pm. In part two of our series we will discuss how to make infused snacks. Let's take our knowledge from part 1 and see what we can make with our tinctures, butters and oils. There will be a variety of sweet and savory snack recipes available. A donation of $25/class is appreciated. Contact lesleycarlton@hotmail.com.
