Valley Peak November 7, 2019

Where will the 2019 Grey Cup final be held? (Answer on page 7) November 7-13, 2019 Invermere Remembrance Services Monday, November 11 is Remembrance Day. The Invermere Legion hosts a ceremony at the downtown Cenotaph. Parade participants are to gather at the Legion at 10:30 am. The parade will march to the Cenotaph and the service will begin (usually around 10:45). They always have a beautiful ceremony with many people from the valley attending. Afterwards they march back to the Legion. There will be a soup and sandwich luncheon at the Legion and a kids’ lunch of hot dogs and hot chocolate at the Curling Centre. It is a good day to contemplate our World and how lucky we are while enjoying some fine fellowship.

Long Day Do you know any good Daylight Saving jokes? I’ve been trying to find some 25/7.

Edgewater Remembrance Day The Edgewater Legion holds their Remembrance Day ceremony in the afternoon of Monday, November 11. The parade forms at the Legion at 3:45 pm with the ceremo-

Volume 17 Issue 45 ny following at the Cenotaph (4 pm). Afterwards folks can gather at the Legion for a dinner reception. Thanks to the volunteers of the Legions for hosting these ceremonies.

Coffee with Council Next Thursday, November 14, we have the opportunity to sit down in a casual setting with District of Invermere Council members at a few popular local coffee spots. It is a perfect time to ask questions or voice some of our concerns. Sessions are an hour each beginning at A&W at 8:30 am, followed by The Bakery at 9:45 and The Bistro at 10:45 am.

Friday Tasting This week’s Friday Tasting (November 8) at the Copper City Liquor Store is from a small, craft brewery in Penticton. The Cannery Brewery, established in 2001 produces full flavoured, hand-crafted beers which are preservative-free and pasteurized. Stop in to the Best Western Invermere Inn between 4 and 7 pm to taste their sample pack. Enjoy Friday but please stay safe.

Late Night Shopping The businesses of downtown Invermere are hosting a ‘Late Night Shopping’ event next Thursday, November 14. It is the perfect opportunity to get a jump on your Christmas gifts. You will find super specials, door prizes and much more. Gather a few friends and head downtown for a stroll through our local businesses.

Interesting Read Life is short on time, daily, weekly and longer for me. Trying to get The Valley Peak done between dialysis sessions is a tricky gig. I end up writing late at night and often falling asleep in my desk chair. So I take a few shortcuts. I will check old issues from the same time of year to get some ideas, maybe even a lucky copy and paste sort of thing. It is always interesting to see what Watson and I wrote about a year or two ago. Two years ago I was very sick and beginning chemo. One year ago I was trying to recover from chemo and Watson was a bit sick with an ear infection. And here we are, today, both of us doing so much better.

A bit of self-realization never really hurt anyone. It hurts at first but eventually we figure it out. I have a lot going on in my life and in my brain so it is tough to get through to it sometimes. I am two different people, at least two. I see the importance of being kind and supporting people and do my best to follow that plan. I enjoy making a tiny difference in the days of others. It is a good way to live and I do my best with what little I have to offer. Just taking the time to care seems to make a difference. So a lot of the public see this happy, caring guy, always trying to say ‘Hi’ to everyone and that sort of thing. But my poor friends have seen a different Rob. They are the ones that have to hear me talk about how I am actually feeling, physically and mentally. They hear sentences like, “I hate my life.” It has worn them down enough that I am not who they really feel like hanging out with. I am not adding much joy, just negative energy. Do I hate my life? Well not really. I don’t like that it is very different now and I can’t change that. I dislike that I have such low energy and drive and that I am busy doing medical stuff constantly. But there are so many things that I do love and I try to fill my time with as much of that stuff as possible. I just wish for more.

Discovering My Past I think I need to run for politics. Then people will dig up all my dirt and maybe I can piece together my past (especially my 20s).

Please Your Pet With the cooler weather it is pretty easy to stay close to the comfort of home. Dog walks become a bit less frequent and maybe a touch shorter. Like humans, animals can get some seasonal sadness. I know Watson loves fresh air and exercise. Kootenay Kritters can help you with that. Jen is open for business year round. She loves caring for animals and she really could use a bit more exercise herself, haha, just kidding. She gets lots. Kootenay Kritters can also pet or house sit if you need to get away for a bit. Whatever level of love your pets need, she can do it. Kritters is approved by Watson and many other animals. 250-755-6334. Your pet will be very happy to spend time with Jen and maybe other kritters.

Tasting Friday, November 8

It has been a pretty good fall so far. Hound dogs love fall. The cooler air makes the walks that much more energizing and fun. There are so many scents out there that just need to be explored. I have been out for a lot of walks lately. I am very good at laying down the sad, bored, ‘guilt’ look on Rob. He buckles quite a bit. As do his amazing friends who come check on us during dialysis and more. A nice sleep last weekend. It felt like an extra hour or so. I loved that but dinner time seemed to come a bit later. Ouch. Haha. I want to thank all the friendly folks I meet on a weekly basis. I love to be loved and I will never complain about a good rub. That weird costume night has come and gone. I am loving the yummy leftover chocolate. Just kidding. Chocolate is bad for dogs and why would you waste it on us anyways? I am hoping you all have a pawesome November. Try to get out to the Remembrance Day ceremonies. It is good to remember and be grateful. American Bandstand and Maverick debuted on TV, the laser was invented, the Russians launched Sputnik I and ultrasound scanning was pioneered. Elvis bought Graceland, the Avro Arrow was revealed to the public, ‘Cat in the Hat’ was published and the first Frisbee was sold. What year was it? See page 10.

Time for a Second Home My second home will be in the next time zone so I just have to move at Daylight Saving Time instead of figuring out how to change all my clocks.

It is interesting listening to people around me. We all have issues. All of us. Many, many different issues that are hard to understand. We are all on a different journey. The main thing is figuring out what triggers the thoughts we have and then figuring out an alternative response to the triggers. We have to look inside ourselves as we are always a part of it. Remember to not take criticism to heart from someone that you wouldn’t go to for advice. Remember to actually communicate your thoughts and cut down on assumptions. Learn to not be too worried about how you ‘fit in’ or what others think. What is important is that you just be you. There are no other yous out there so just represent yourself and your honest thoughts and feelings. Do not let other’s thoughts and words trigger your emotions. Don’t worry about what others are doing. Do less judging yourself and you will feel less judged. There are so many strategies to feel better. Focus on three good things every morning and you can feel happier very quickly. We all know a lot of these strategies but I know how hard it is to put them into action. Our emotions shut down our common sense. Mine do anyways.

Living with Cancer Cancer is a pretty big thing in our world right now. It appears in a lot of different forms and is a different journey for everyone. Mine is called Multiple Myeloma or Bone Marrow Cancer. MM produces proteins in my blood that attack my organs. I was slow to get diagnosed so my kidneys were done by the time it was figured out. It was a really scary and confusing time when I was told about it. I was told the name of it and the doctor walked away casually as he had said it so many times before that. Along with my chemo protocol I began several alternative treatments as well and I am still doing most of them. I am happy to still be in ‘remission’. It is a major change in life style. I wonder about everything I eat and do my best to ‘eat the rainbow’ as far as a good mix of vegetables (was never a huge fan of veggies). Low sugar is important. Anyways, what I am saying is that it is possible to live with cancer but it is important to do your part to help keep it at bay. Do some research and ask your team a lot of questions.

My physical health issues aren’t changing much these days. I have to be careful with what I eat and with my activities. I really can’t afford to get very sick or hurt myself as my immune system is a bit compromised. Any bone damage can easily trigger a revitalization of the myeloma. My mental health seems to improving a bit. Sadly, a lot of my feelings of depression really grow during dialysis, I get bored and the brain goes sideways. So it has been amazing lately with all the different guests walking in the door. You folks are improving my mental and emotional states immensely. That is progress for me. Some are planned visits that I look forward to while others are just random stop ins. But it is definitely all folks who are understanding what 60 days in a hospital bed (at home) might feel like. I have a wonderful planned guest tomorrow and I am actually looking forward to it all because of that.

ROCKIES HOCKEY FERNIE FRIDAY SUMMERLAND SATURDAY 1. Canada

My father, John Darrell Dunn, was a World War II veteran. A very proud veteran. I remember growing up and watching him march in the Remembrance Day parade. We used to get time off from school to attend the ceremony so I knew it was an important thing and that my Dad was also important. He was in the parade! He wore a poppy. It meant a lot to him. He had many fallen friends through the war and the poppy represented some of that. It is hard for most of us to even fathom how that all went down. Men and women, young and old willing to sacrifice everything for their beliefs and our well-being. Crazy eh? Anyways, if you are so inclined, you can find poppies all over town. Be proud to put one on your chest.

It is done very well by the organizer, Jason. Lately he has toughened up the questions a bit. We were all starting to think we were a bit smart. Back to reality now. The key is to have a wide range of backgrounds on your six player team. Especially some different generations to help with the music questions. Dress up 70s and enjoy a fantastic meal from the new Viibrant Earth Café. It is going to be a lot of fun. Find ticket information in the ad on page 3.

(From page 4) In 1957, the peak of the birth of the baby boomers, a house cost $12,200, a car was $2,800 and the average annual income was $4,550. The Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles, radar guns were introduced and Humphrey Bogart died of cancer.

The Thrifty Reporter Thrift shopping sets you up for some great DIY projects. Whether you want to transform T-shirts into tank tops, re-cover a dining room chair, or anything in between, you can find the basic materials for your DIY projects at the Invermere Thrift Store. How about materials for knitting or crochet projects? I have seen many crochet hooks, knitting needles and a variety of yarn in the store. Maybe your home needs lamps or some art for your walls. I am always surprised by what I find on my visits to the Thrift Store.

Furniture Shopping “So how much laundry can this bad boy handle?” I asked. “Ma’am, this is a couch.” “Yes. So, like, 6 loads?”

CHICKEN & WAFFLES ARE BACK!!

November 13 is World Kindness Day. Part of what makes this valley special is all the ways in which we’re kind to one another: supporting our neighbours when they’re going through a tough time, volunteering, being polite to that person at the till, or holding the door open for someone else. Why not celebrate this day by thanking someone for their kindness, or doing something kind for someone else?

Custom Christmas Cards A beautiful Christmas card with your own personal touch is a great gift for the holiday season. Palliser Printing does that and does it well. Stop in and see them and some of the nice options they have for you.

Winter Wonderland Market This market has grown to be an excellent event. The vendors bring their best work so we can find some priceless gifts for Christmas. There are so many of them and they are so talented. It is on Saturday, November 16 at the Columbia Valley Centre in Invermere from 10 am to 4 pm. Make sure you get out to this ‘Festival of Crafts and Artisans’.

The Usual Good Times Check out ‘The Usual Suspects’ live at the Horsethief Creek Pub this Monday, November 11. It is another installment of Monday Night Live from 7 to 9 pm. They are a terrific band with lots of talent and very entertaining. The food is pretty tasty at ‘The Horse’. The kitchen comes up with delicious, and often unique, daily specials. Stop in and try it out for a fun Monday evening.

Where Watson Was The photo on page 6 shows Watson at one of his favourite spots. We live in a beautiful area. He is down in the ‘dog area’ at Kinsmen Beach and loving it.

Tender and Tasty Thanks to the Millers and Home Hardware for lunch last Saturday. The free beef on a bun was incredibly tasty and tender. Very nicely done. But yes, they fed a lot of people and everyone was quite happy with the food. Donations to STARS were also accepted. I should say that Watson really loved the event as well. He also thanks you.

Snowball Drop This year the Invermere Light Up will be happening on Saturday, November 30. Downtown will be full of activities and Christmas spirit. Enjoy photos with Santa, fire pits and hot chocolate, the Snowball Drop, a Santa parade and much, much more. Watch for details in upcoming issue of The Valley Peak.

Learn On This is the time of year that we start to find ourselves ‘stuck’ indoors a bit more. Especially on the colder days. We look for a few more indoor activities. So how about learning? The College of the Rockies offers a wide variety of programs for everybody. You can upgrade yourself for work or you can learn a great new hobby. The five courses showcased in their page 4 ad this week are a perfect example. I mean it. Take a look for yourself and see some fantastic programs. Check www.cotr.bc.ca/Invermere for more.

Fitness “How often do you exercise?” asked my doctor. “Three times”. “A week? A month?” “I have given my answer.”

Ladies’ Curling Bonspiel The Invermere Curling Centre hosted ‘That 70s Spiel’ last weekend. Sixteen ladies teams vied for the weekend title. Champions were the Conroy team from Calgary in the A Event. The Scott foursome won the B Event and the local Schroeder team took the C Event.
