Feed the Valley

Local Tasting

This is definitely one of my favourite food events in the valley each year. The Rocky River Grill is hosting their annual ‘Feed the Valley’ event this Thanksgiving Monday, October 14 between 2 pm and 8 pm. Everyone is invited to this FREE traditional Thanksgiving turkey feast! And a feast it is with all the fixings, all the side dishes and all the desserts that go great with turkey and giving thanks. You are encouraged to bring a nonperishable item or a donation for the Food Bank. Thanks to Sysco and GFS for their sponsorship.

This Friday tasting at the Copper City Liquor Store is from the local brewery, Arrowhead. Stop in at the Best Western Invermere Inn between 4 and 7 pm to try out some of their delicious beverages. They will also be offering up a Thanksgiving Arrowhead special. Nice. A great start to a long weekend.

Final Weekend Citadella Restaurant serves up wonderful food. It is well worth the visit just to see the glorious view from above Radium (turn up at Rolf’s spot). This weekend (Thanksgiving) will be their final weekend open for this season. Make sure you get up there and take advantage of a nice dining experience.

Returns The neighbourhood pub is only a 5 minute walk to get to it but more than 30 minutes to return. The difference is staggering.

DON’T MISS THIS

Happy Thanksgiving folks. I hope everyone has an incredible weekend. And I hope you all take the time to reflect on what you are thankful for. My list is endless and you will be sick of reading about some of them through this paper. I have to admit that many times in my life I find it hard to be thankful and wonder why things are happening to me. Similar to everyone I would imagine. But the blessings are endless. My dialysis view is beautiful mountains, not a hospital parking lot. I am not a big fan of dialysis but it keeps me alive. That’s worth feeling thankful. I am lucky to have The Valley Peak in my life. It has allowed me to meet many good people in the area and more. How about food? Thanks to all the food that I am provided. I really like to eat haha. Thanks to everyone who has ever done anything for me, or my family, or my friends, or anyone else who has needed a bit of a boost. Anyways, back to just a simple ‘I hope you enjoy your weekend. A reminder of the free turkey dinner at Rocky River Grill on Monday, October 14, and I know that will be a great meal and I will feel great full and grateful.

Bad Directions I am not sure I like my GPS unit. It led me to a cemetery and said I had reached my final destination.

The Mountain of Hope Society is having its first ever casino night fundraiser at Ullr Bar this Saturday, October 19, doors open at 7 pm with the tables opening at 8 pm. Your cover gets you a few chips and you can purchase more. All chip purchases are going directly to Mountain of Hope. This very cool event is limited to the bar’s capacity, with the age restricted to 19+. There will also be a silent auction. Plenty of local businesses have stepped up to sponsor the tables, and Birchwood Restaurant is offering VIP packages with dinner and first choice of table seating. Every penny raised goes to help local folks facing unexpected challenges. A fun night out for a great cause.

Watson’s Waddle Many people wonder why someone would have a pet. It really seems like a lot of work to feed, bathe, exercise and love an animal. What do you possibly get back? Did I say exercise? With a dog, it is important to make sure it is getting lots of exercise. That means that you will also be getting some exercise. Lots of nice walks. Rob and I both have lost lots of weight. How about reduced stress? Every walk we take, I can sense Rob’s brain slowing down, relaxing and becoming present in the moment. Yesterday we saw Canada geese, Mallard ducks, turtles, fish and more. All these relaxing and awesome things that few people see enough of. Love. That is a good thing. Coming home to a pet that just wants to be with you feels pretty good. A purring cat or a wagging tail can help you forget about a lot of problems. A warm cuddle when you are feeling down is wonderful. There are lots more reasons but I am running out of space. For now I want to thank everyone who loves and provides a good, healthy, happy life for their pets.

Thanksgiving Thanks to the members of this community who care for and help others (including me). Your kindness is incredible.

Mental Health

FRIGHT NIGHTS VALLEY ZIPLINE OCTOBER 11-13 5. Graphite

I am a bit of a study in mental health. I love living on my own and living free of the burdens that a relationship may place on me but I get really lonely during dialysis. I am finding the dialysis is a bit nervewracking on my own. I am very proficient at it but it is just a strange thing sitting there with my blood leaving my body and not having anyone to count on if something goes wrong. 911 is likely not quick enough. I have been incredibly blessed lately with a few different visitors. It is interesting for them to learn about dialysis and to see how important the kidneys are. Even younger kids find it quite intriguing. And for me, just a ten minute visit from someone changes everything. It puts me in a completely different mental state and the 4 hours goes by so much quicker. A couple folks have stayed for quite a good chunk of time. It is always fun to learn about someone new and what they have experienced or what their hopes and dreams might be. Thanks so much to those who have come by for a visit.

Priorities One thing that I have learned through all of this health adventure is priorities. I thought that many things were very important and could not be missed. Then I went down to kidney failure and months of hospital and health time where I had to drop almost everything. I was able to keep The Valley Peak gong with the help of many folks, especially Heather McLeod. Anyways, now I am learning that dialysis is top priority for me. It does not matter what else is going on, if I need to do dialysis, I need to do dialysis. Thanks to my friends understand that and sorry to those things I have missed. It is a tricky thing to schedule my life.

Thanksgiving Thanks to all my helpers with deliveries, proofreading and more. The Valley Peak would not work without your help.

Winter Clothing Drive It’s getting chilly out there and families are scrambling to find boots and coats that fit their growing kids. Some folks in our community struggle to keep themselves dressed warmly over the winter months. To help out, Family Dynamix is accepting donations of used and new winter clothing to pass along to kids and adults in need. You can drop off your donations of coats, toques, mitts, socks, thermal layers and more at 1317-7th Ave in Invermere.

Where Watson Was The photo on page 6 shows Watson in a beautiful spot along the edge of the skate park. This is a high use area for people so it is definitely a place that ‘no turd will be left behind’.

Meteor Showers If you have been a regular reader over the years, you are well aware that I love the night skies. I mean, what isn’t there to love? Well October and November are pretty good months for sky watchers. Theo Orionids and the Leonids meteor showers peak on October 21 and November 17 respectively. They will be displaying meteors all through the months so just look up, relax, and hope for a bit of a show. This is also the time of year that Orion rises through the night with Sirius following closely behind.

Crazy? “Doctor, my friends all think that I am crazy. Can you help me?” “Well,” answered the Psychiatrist, “you will have to start at the beginning.” “Okay. In the beginning, I created the Heavens and the Earth…”

Politics This is a time of year when federal politics come to the forefront of many newscasts, papers and more. All the parties want your vote and will tell you a lot of things to get it. I have some very strong feeling towards all of that and also in who I will vote for. But it is not really appropriate for me to use The Valley Peak as too much of my own soapbox. I do hope that everyone takes a moment to figure out the real issues in our country and will vote according to their own beliefs.

on dialysis day. It is usually still dark when we start out. So the world unravels right before us. Mount Nelson is a beautiful sight in the mornings. It is one of the first places hit directly by the sun so it has a startling golden glow on the snow pack. It is one of those things you have to slow down and look up to actually notice.

Keep Your Fluids Up Studies show that nearly 80% of our hunger pangs are actually triggered by thirst. So a great step towards a healthy lifestyle is to get in the habit of taking a drink of water when you feel hungry. At the same time, our bodies retain fluids because we don’t drink enough. We drink so little water that our bodies think we are in a desert and don’t want to give up any fluids. So have a drink of water and take a little walk. You will be better off for it.
