Which Canadian athlete was known as ‘the fastest man on Earth’ in 1996? (Answer on page 7) October 31-November 6, 2019 Beef-on-a-Bun Home Hardware is hosting their 62nd ‘Beefon-a-Bun’ customer appreciation day this Saturday, November 2 from 11 am to 3 pm (or until the beef is gone). This is the 26th time that Al and Lucy have been the hosts. Enjoy tender beef on a bun with pop or coffee. It is one of my favourite free lunches of the year and it seems like many others agree. It is a great event to see many of your friends and neighbours. Donations to STARS will be gratefully accepted.

Literacy I got caught up in an amazing book last night. I didn’t stop colouring until 3 am.

FireSmart Invermere’s FireSmart Community Meeting is this Tuesday, November 5 at the Columbia Valley Centre. Doors open at 6:30 pm. The meeting runs 7 to 8:30 pm. Refreshments will be served. FireSmart is critical information in our valley and in our province. It is one of the more likely disasters to face around here and the risks can be minimized by proper preparation. But that is for the meeting, not here, haha.

This Sunday, November 3 is our next installment of Daylight Saving. We will be adjusting our clocks back one hour at 2 am. That brings daylight an hour earlier in the mornings (maybe 7 am instead of 8 am) but it also brings darkness an hour earlier in the evening. It kind of sucks for the evenings really. We do get an extra hour of sleep on Saturday night though. It is hard to complain about that. I remember working 12 hour night shifts and having to do 13 hours on this night. It seemed like forever.

Coffee House Enjoy an old-fashioned coffee house event with live music and bottomless beverages (coffee, tea or juice plus goodies). It will be good clean family fun with singalongs, door prizes and more. It is at the Christ Church Trinity this Saturday, November 2 from 7 to 9 pm. Everyone is invited.

I wish so much better for my friends and everyone else really. I am very blessed to have spent a good portion of my life seeking fun and recreation. Golfing and fishing have been my main activities but there are lots of other things I have enjoyed. The Valley Peak has allowed this lifestyle. I am not getting rich or even close but I have lived a very rich lifestyle. I live in a paradise that many folks pay a lot of money to just come and visit. Blessings. When I think back to my years of chasing money and working long hours so I could ‘get ahead’ I cringe. I would work a lot for weeks just to save up and come out here for a visit. It was a sad lifestyle. Now that I am ill and don’t quite have the capacity to do the things I want, I am very grateful to have done what I have. I hope that others do a similar thing. I watch so many people neglect themselves and their family to work more and more with the hope of ‘getting ahead’. This often forces them to show love by buying gifts rather than spending time together. Or they buy ‘toys’ that they never have time to use, hoping that the time will come. Please make sure you are enjoying your life as much as possible. Find time to be with your family having some fun. Find some happiness.

Congratulations to AG Valley Foods on their 2019 Gold Award for the Canadian Independent Grocery Store of the Year. This is huge. The ‘Academy Awards’ for grocery stores with many thousands of stores qualifying. “A dream come true’ for Sydney-Anne, Greg, Eric and their team of fantastic employees. “Teamwork makes the dream work.” They say. They would like to thank all of you, their customers for your amazing support. And remember that if there is something that you are looking for, talk to them about getting it into their store. They are pretty good that way. Personally, I love shopping there. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Again, congrats to the Ag Valley Foods team.

As a hound, I love to sniff and I love to sleep. I think they go hand in hand. Along with rubs and treats, that is. I do pretty well with the walking and sniffing part. I see a lot of dogs on these short little leashes being dragged along by their owners with no time for sniffing around. As long as I kind of pay attention to what Rob is saying, things are great. A few of Rob’s friends walk me sometimes. Tracy, ‘Thanks, you are amazing’. She takes me on super long walks with little or no leash (where allowed). Great walks. Jen at Kootenay Kritters is also amazing. She is strict and fun at the same time. We have lots of great adventures and I have meet a lot of dogs. I can barely remember them all, but she does. I am also a great sleeper. Very peaceful until I begin to dream. Rob laughs as he watches me run in my sleep, legs shaking and pedaling along. I am usually barking or yelping at the same time, talking to another dog or maybe even a deer. Dreaming while sleeping is a sweet experience. Exercise at night. Anyways, I hope all you pets out there have a pawsome week. Maybe stay inside and sleep during Halloween night.

DON’T SPEND ANOTHER DAY WAXING OR SHAVING

Start now, be beach ready! Lip, Chin, Underarm, Men’s Back & Chest, Legs, Brazilian, Bikini.

The human brain is a tough thing to solve. In my own vain mind, I have a pretty good brain. Unfortunately it just gets too active at times. And I think that everyone must think like me. So I have a lot of issues when I find that my friends don’t read my mind. They are not able to relate to having two terminal illnesses that effect my everyday life. They wonder why I am not out there ‘living my life’ to the max, doing everything possible. They don’t quite realize that I am trying to do that but it is very difficult. So I find myself all frustrated/disappointed/ depressed with myself and them. It is totally my issue to deal with but my brain tries to tell me differently. It gets sad. I want to golf more, fish more, curl more, ride my bike, hike and do all the things that other folks do. But my schedule and my physical condition don’t always allow it. And my brain hates that and starts a negative cycle that really can bring me down. How to stop that? I try to remember that all my friends have their own crap going on and are not really worried about ‘being there’ for me. They will show up if asked but it is up to me to let them know what is actually happening.

Side Effects So it has been an interesting 2 years and a bit living with kidney failure and multiple myeloma. Both have their special qualities. The MM has very serious long-term ramifications while the kidney failure is an all day, every day issue. I do not produce a lot of hemoglobin (MM) which effects the transfer of oxygen through my blood to my cells. I have to take a drug injection (Eprex) to help my body with that. The average person has a hemoglobin level of 135 or higher. That allows for lots of oxygen in the body. My HB is kept around 100. It is basically 30% lower than yours. That means that I have 30% less energy than you right off the bat. If I add that to the fact that creatinine (a muscle use byproduct) build in my muscles, it is hard work for me to just get around. I have a flight of stairs to my basement for the wood stove and by the time I am at the top of it, my legs are done and I am pulling with my arms to get up the last couple. It is taking a lot of mental adjustment to adapt to that. It is hard to not get a bit frustrated at times.

I am pretty proud of myself. I am very blessed to qualify to do home hemodialysis. It is a very intricate procedure that encompasses hundreds of little steps to get it going. Anyways, I have been on it for 7 months now and have done 120 rounds of dialysis at home. That is a lot. Each round has me attached to a home hospital bed for basically a half a day. That means I have been in that situation for the equivalent of 60 days. Imagine that, 60 days in a hospital ward (even though it is a room at home) in the past few months. Except that there are no nurses or doctors to support me. Just me hooking up to a machine that will keep me alive. I really owe a lot to the folks who have taken the time to visit me during these sessions. It is so isolating. Lonely and nerve-wracking. A ten-minute visit or a quick game of checkers changes my whole outlook. Believe me.

Last week the Chamber of Commerce rolled out the red carpet for the businesses of this valley. The 21st Annual Business Excellence event was well attended by many local businesses. I was fortunate to attend with an Auxiliary executive on behalf of the Invermere Healthcare Auxiliary which operates the Invermere Thrift Store. The Auxiliary was nominated in the Innovation Excellence category and Mountain Hub received the award. Congratulations to all who were nominated and especially to those who received the award in their category. This was a fun evening and an awesome opportunity to chat with others who help this valley be the best place to live.

SENIORS

Did you know that smoking and space heaters are the most common causes of injury or death in fire deaths of seniors? Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms once a month. Don’t stand on a chair to test your alarms, use a broom to push the test button instead. Have a fire escape plan from every room in your house. Keep the floor and surrounding area clear for a safe escape in case of an emergency. Close before you doze. A closed door can be an effective barrier against deadly levels of carbon monoxide, smoke and flames.

Enjoy a delicious meal with a chance at a 50/50 prize and 5 different meat draw prizes of quality meat from AG Valley Foods. They have moved cribbage to Monday evenings at 7 pm and darts to Wednesdays at 7 pm. Poker continues on Thursdays. It is a great place to hang out and have some fun.

It was That Year (From page 4) In 1990, a new home was worth $123,000 and the average annual income was $29,000. East and West Germany reunited, the first web page was written, Mr. Bean debuted and the first McDonalds in Russia opened.

It is the start of winter and I am so glad to have a wood stove in the basement. It helps me keep heating costs down a bit (labour is up a bit haha). Diamond Heating and Spas is the place to go for a wood stove. They have the most efficient stoves you can find in stock right now. Stop in at their showroom and check it out.

Sold My Soul You will notice a couple larger ads this week that have forced a bit of a different look on the pages of The Valley Peak. The one really changes the look and increases my workload a bit. But hey, I have to put food on the table. I really appreciate all of my clients who help keep The Valley Peak going. Printing expenses average about $3200/month so I really have to stay on top of that. Thanks also to the readers who support my advertising clients. Please always tell them ‘The Valley Peak sent me’. They like to know their ad is in the right place.

Flu Clinics

Always Learning

It is that time of year. If you are waiting for the free clinics to get your flu shots then check the ad on page 2. All the times and locations are listed. The first one is right away in Edgewater on Friday, November 1.

The human brain is designed to hold a lot of information. Really, it can never be too full. That is why it is important for us to keep learning. The College of the Rockies offers us with so many choices of programs to help us grow. From fun, general interest courses to credit courses to career training, they have a lot to offer. Checkout their weekly ad to see what courses that you can benefit from.

Winter Wonderland Market Saturday, November 16 is the date set for this amazing Christmas market. It will be at the Columbia Valley Centre from 10-4 pm. I love this market with very talented and diverse vendors. It is a fun place to stop in and chat even if you are not shopping.

Where I Was The page 6 photo pretty much explains itself. Congratulations to AG Valley Foods on winning the ‘Canadian Independent Grocer of the Year’ Award for 2019. It is a great store.

Smokehouse 93 Very awesome they are. If you enjoy barbecues and meat, you will love the new Smokehouse 93 restaurant up at the crossroads. They have it all figured out. Delicious brisket, chicken, turkey, sausages, ribs and more. Smoked potato salad, tasty coleslaw, fresh cornbread with a maple butter. Yeah it is good. They offer a $10 lunch special Tuesday to Thursday. They are already busy and actually run out of meat on occasion. Brad and Steve are great guys doing an amazing job. They are open Tuesday to Saturday, 11:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Flock of Leaves From where I sit in my home dialysis room, I have a pretty nice view. I live in a quiet neighbourhood that hosts many dogs walking their people. Across the street is a sloping field. Watson considers it part of his yard. It is handy. The other day it was very windy and I noticed a bunch of leaves blowing around. They would skim along the ground before lifting up in a swirling flurry. It looked like a flock of birds taking off and flying around. Each leaf seemed aware of the one beside it as they danced in a beautiful aerial display. Nature is beautiful.

Conniving I am doing one of those escape room things this morning. Well actually I am getting ready to go to work but trying to figure out how to get out of it.

Detailing It is the time of year when many folks are putting away their boats and RVs for the winter. Not everyone has the time to clean them up before they put them away. You have to do that work next spring when you get the stuff out again. Or you can take it to Utopia Detailing in the Athamer Industrial Park. They will have your unit looking as good as new for a great start-up in the spring. Give them a call at 250-341-5890.

Happy Halloween Have fun and be safe out there.
