The Creed - Statement of Faith I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and died and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the living and the dead; whose Kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father; who with the Father and the Son, together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one, holy and apostolic church. I believe in the Scriptures, confirmed by our Lord Jesus Christ; as the true Word of God, inspired, by the Spirit of God. I acknowledge, one baptism for the remission of sins; in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; And I hope for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

What is Salvation? John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The simplest definition of salvation is to be delivered (or rescued) from peril/danger. God made Adam and Eve and they sinned. And because they sinned, we all became sinners through them. God sent Jesus Christ to rescue us from the consequence of our sin, and everybody falls into the category of sinner.

Why be Saved? John 3:5 - Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Though life on earth is temporary, life is eternal and it never ends. The decision we all have to make is whether, we will spend it, either, in hell or heaven. Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; The real problem is sin and guilt. That's the issue. It doesn't matter whether you're among the haves or the have-nots, whether you have great expectations or none at all, whether you're consumed by your passions or exhibit a degree of self-control and discipline-you are still a sinner. You have broken the law of God and He's angry about it. Unless something happens to change your condition, you're on your way to eternal hell. You need to be rescued from the consequences of your sin.

How Can I be Saved? Romans 10:9-10 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Beauty of salvation is that it is the free of God to mankind and available to all who are willing to accept it and obey His commandments in the Word of God. Repeat the prayer below, earnestly and sincerely from the heart and the Lord will save you.

Prayer of Salvation Father in heaven, I admit that I am a sinner. I have done many things that does not please you. I have lived my life for myself only. I am sorry, and I repent for my ways. I ask you to forgive me all my sins and cleanse me by the blood of your Son, Jesus Christ.. I believe that your Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross of Calvary for me, to save me and You raised Him up from the dead. You did what I could not do for myself. I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life; I give it to you. From this day forward, You are the Lord of my life and my Saviour. Help me to live every day for you, and in a way that pleases you. I love you, Lord, and I thank you that I will spend all eternity with you. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

STUDY GUIDE WHY SHOULD I STUDY GOD’s WORD? God’s Words are in the Bible. This is the most important subject you will ever learn. All that you study in school and life, ends with this life. What you study here, stays with you in this life and in the next, all throughout eternity. The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword and the Christian’s charter. Here too, Heaven is opened and the gates of Hell disclosed. Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgment, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, rewards the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.

HOW SHOULD I STUDY? Your school textbooks change and the information keeps changing as new things come along. God’s word does not change. God’s word has been written with you and your life in mind. It will speak to you. ު

God to speak to you through His Word and He will. ު

Memorize It

: - God’s word has no expiry. It is your guide and lamp,

on your way to eternity. The more you remember, better you understand His will. Steps to memorizing God’s Word a. Start by reading the verse you want to memorize atleast 5-10 times b. Try to recall and repeat the verse you want to learn. c. Read again and check if you were correct d. Repeat the steps from step ‘a’ If you follow the above listed steps, you will develop ability to memorize easily and quickly, ު

Revise It

: - Regularly read and revise, what you learned, to ensure

that you don’t forget them. a. Repeat at least 3 times, whenever you revise the memorised verse. b. If you systematically revise, you’ll never forget what you learned.

Come running, come running, come running to the mercy seat where Jesus is calling, His grace will be your covering. His blood will flow freely, it will provide your healing. In Christ alone, Who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. 'Til on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied For ev'ry sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again! A Son for Zechariah Luke 1:5-25

An angel appears to Zechariah to tell him his prayers would be answered Page 17 of 117

A Son for Zechariah Luke 1:5-25 Luke 1 5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commandments and regulations blamelessly. 7But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years. 8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. 13But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. 14He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. 16Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their

God. 17And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” 18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” 19 The angel answered, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time.” 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak. 23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”

A SON FOR ZECHARIAH

QUESTIONS 1. Why didn’t Zechariah have any children?

Zechariah was a priest who was married to woman named Elizabeth. They both wanted to have children, but Elizabeth was barren and unable to. Both Zechariah and Elizabeth were very old but they still prayed for a child. When Zechariah was serving in the temple, an angel of the Lord appeared to him. Zechariah was scared but the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid. Your prayer has been heard. You will have a son. His name will be John. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. He will prepare the way of the Lord.” Zechariah asked, “How can this be? My wife and I are old.” The angel said, “I am Gabriel. I have been sent to tell you the good news. You will not be able to speak until your son is born because you did not believe me.” When Zechariah came out of the temple, he could not speak. The people realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. Zechariah made signs because he was unable to speak. To find out more, check out Luke 1:525 in your Bible.

The Birth of Jesus Luke 2:1-20 Luke 2 1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to his own town to register. 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the DQJHO VDLG WR WKHP Âł'R QRW EH DIUDLG I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a

The Three Wise Men Matthew 2:1-23

The three wise men bring gifts and worship Jesus Page 37 of 117

The Three Wise Men Matthew 2:1-23 Matthew 2 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.’” 7

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

13

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” 16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: 18 “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” 19

After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.” 21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: “He will be called a Nazarene.” Page 38 of 117

Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his

understanding and his answers. 48When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” 49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” 50But they did not understand what he was saying to them. 51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

JESUS IN THE TEMPLE

QUESTIONS 1. Why did Jesus go to Jerusalem?

Every year Jesus went with his parents to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. When Jesus was twelve years, they traveled to Jerusalem for the Feast. When the feast was over, Jesus stayed behind while his parents traveled back home. His parents did not know that Jesus had stayed behind in Jerusalem. After traveling for a day, they began to look for Jesus among their relatives and friends. When they could not find him, they went back to Jerusalem. After three days of searching, they found Jesus in the temple courts. He was sitting with the teachers and asking them questions. Everyone who heard Jesus speak was amazed and his understanding and answers. When his parents found him, they were surprised. His mother said to him, “Why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously looking for you.” “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know that I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not know what Jesus was talking about. Jesus traveled back to Nazareth with his parents. Jesus obeyed his parents. Mary treasured what had happened in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and men. For more details, please read Luke 2:41-52 in the Bible.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way Luke 3:1-18

John the Baptist Prepares the Way Luke 3:1-18 Luke 3 1

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene—2during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert. 3He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. 5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. 6 And all mankind will see God’s salvation.’” 7

John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10

“What should we do then?” the crowd asked. 11 John answered, “The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same.” 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” 13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them. 14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.” 15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ. 16John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 17His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” 18And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them.

CHAPTER 9

In The Beginning Genesis 1:1-31 – 2:3

God created the plants and animals Page 57 of 117

In the Beginning Genesis 1:1-31 – 2:3 Genesis 1 1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. 6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.” 7So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8God called the expanse “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. 9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day. 14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day. 20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” 21So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill

the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day. 24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it— I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. Genesis 2 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Adam and Eve Genesis 2:4-25 Genesis 2 4

This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens²5and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, 6but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground²7the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground²trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12(The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) 13The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. 14The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16And the LORD God

The Fall of Man Genesis 3:1-24

Eve eats a fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil Page 67 of 117

The Fall of Man Genesis 3:1-24 Genesis 3 1

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5“For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all the livestock

and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” 16

To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

17

To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” 20

Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. 21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. 22And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” 23So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life. THE FALL OF MAN God made the first man, Adam, and the first woman, Eve, and allowed them to live in the garden of Eden. This was a beautiful garden that had plenty of wonderful plants and animals, God told Adam that he could eat from any tree in the garden except for the one tree in the center. It was called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God told Adam that if he ate from it, he would surely die. The devil, disguised as a serpent, asked Eve, “Did God really say that you must not eat from any tree in the garden? Eve told the serpent that they would die if they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The serpent convinced Eve that she would be like God, knowing good and evil. Eve looked at the delicious looking fruit and took a bite. She offered some fruit to Adam. He ate some fruit as well. Right then, they realized that they were naked and they were ashamed. They sewed together fig leaves to cover themselves. Because they sinned, or disobeyed, God made clothes for them and made them leave the beautiful garden. God put a cherubim outside the garden with a flaming sword to keep Adam and Eve from coming back in. Because of their sin, women have pain when giving birth to children and men must work long and hard on the earth. For more on this story, read Genesis 3:1-24 in your Bible.

QUESTIONS

ON THE ARK

1. Who and what went into the ark?

God was sad because of all the sin in the world. He told Noah to build an ark. After Noah finished building the ark, God told him to go into the ark. God said to take both clean and unclean animals on the ark. For each kind of animal, there were both male and female. When Noah was 600 years old, floodwaters came on the earth. Each kind of animal entered the ark along with Noah and his family. Heaven opened up and it began to rain for 40 days and 40 nights. The water lifted the ark high above the earth. There was so much water that the ark floated more than 20 feet above the highest mountain! Every animal that lived on the on land died, including humans. Only Noah, his family, and the animals on the ark would be able to survive the flood. The waters flooded the earth for 150 days. To find out more, read Genesis 7:124 in your Bible.

2. How many days and nights did it rain?

3. What happened to the animals and humans who did not get into the ark?

4. Why did God flood the earth?

God Makes a Promise Genesis 8:1-9:17 Genesis 8 1 But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded. 2Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had stopped falling from the sky. 3 The water receded steadily from the earth. The Tower of Babel Genesis 11:1-9 Genesis 11 1

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” 5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men

were building. 6The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” 8 So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9That is why it was called Babel— because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. Abram Travels Genesis 12:1-9 Genesis 12 1

The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. 2 “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” 4 So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. 5He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

6

Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him. 8 From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD. 9Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev.

Abram traveled from Haran to Canaan. When Abram arrived in Canaan, he heard the Lord say, “To your offspring I will give this land.” Then Abram built an altar to the Lord. Abram also traveled to the hills east of Bethel, pitched his tent, and built another altar. Later, Abram traveled toward a dry wasteland near the Negev. For more details, please read Genesis 12:1-9 in your Bible.

QUESTIONS 1. What did the Lord want Abram to do? 2. Name at least three things the Lord promised Abram.

3. Who and what did Abram take with him?

4. Why do you think Abram built altars to the Lord?

Abram and Lot divide up the land Page 102 of 117

Abram and Lot Separate Genesis 13:1-18 Genesis 13 1 So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him. 2Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. 3 From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier 4and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD. 5 Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. 7And quarreling arose between $EUDPœV KHUGVPHQ DQG WKH KHUGVPHQ RI Lot. The two men parted company: 12Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. 13Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD. 14 The LORD said to Abram after Lot KDG SDUWHG IURP KLP ³/LIW XS \RXU H\HV from where you are and look north and south, east and west. 15All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. 16I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. 17Go, walk through the length and breadth of WKH ODQG IRU , DP JLYLQJ LW WR \RX ´ 18 So Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.

ABRAM AND LOT SEPARATE Abram, his wife, and his nephew Lot spent some time in Egypt during a famine. After the famine, they took all their things back to the Negev. From there, they traveled from place to place until they ended up between Bethel and Ai. This was where Abram had built his first altar to the Lord. There, Abram called on the name of the Lord. Abram and Lot had many animals between them. There were not enough pastures or enough water for all of their animals. The herdsman of Abram and Lot began to argue. Isaac and Rebekah Genesis 24:1-28

Rebekah draws water for the camels Page 113 of 117

Isaac and Rebekah Genesis 24:1-28 Genesis 24 1

Abraham was now old and well advanced in years, and the LORD had blessed him in every way. 2He said to the chief servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh. 3I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, 4but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.” 5 The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?” 6 “Make sure that you do not take my son back there,” Abraham said. 7“The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there. 8If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.” 9So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter. 10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and left, taking with him all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim and made his way to the town of Nahor. 11 He had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water. 12 Then he prayed, “O LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14 May it be that when I say to a girl, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she

says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.” 15 Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor. 16The girl was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever lain with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again. 17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.” 18 “Drink, my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink. 19 After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have finished drinking.” 20So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels. 21Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the LORD had made his journey successful. 22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels. 23 Then he asked, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?” 24 She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milcah bore to Nahor.” 25 And she added, “We have plenty of straw and fodder, as well as room for you to spend the night.” 26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD, 27saying, “Praise be to the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.” 28 The girl ran and told her mother’s household about these things. Page 114 of 117

ISAAC AND REBEKAH

QUESTIONS 1. What did Abraham want his servant to do?

Abraham was getting older and his son Isaac had not yet married. Abraham wanted Isaac to be married, but not to the wrong woman. Abraham’s servant promised Abraham that he would not find a wife for Isaac that was from the land of Canaan. Abraham wanted Isaac to have a wife from the country that he came from. The servant took 10 camels with him to Abraham’s country. He had the camels kneel down near the well that was outside of the town. It was almost evening time when the women came out to get water. The servant prayed and asked God to show him which woman would be Isaac’s wife. If a woman offered the servant and the camels a drink of water, she would be the one Isaac would marry. Before the servant finished praying, Rebekah came near him with a water jar. He asked her for a drink and she gave him one. She also gave the camels water to drink. The servant knew that this was the woman God had chosen for Isaac to marry. He gave her a gold nose ring and gold bracelets. Then he went to meet her family. For more details, please read Genesis 24:1-28 in the Bible.
