The Creed - Statement of Faith I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and died and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the living and the dead; whose Kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father; who with the Father and the Son, together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. What is Salvation? John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.� The simplest definition of salvation is to be delivered (or rescued) from peril/danger. God made Adam and Eve and they sinned. And because they sinned, we all became sinners through them. God sent Jesus Christ to rescue us from the consequence of our sin, and everybody falls into the category of sinner.
Why be Saved? John 3:5 - Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Though life on earth is temporary, life is eternal and it never ends. The decision we all have to make is whether, we will spend it, either, in hell or heaven. Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; The real problem is sin and guilt. That's the issue. It doesn't matter whether you're among the haves or the have-nots, whether you have great expectations or none at all, whether you're consumed by your passions or exhibit a degree of self-control and discipline-you are still a sinner. You have broken the law of God and He's angry about it. Unless something happens to change your condition, you're on your way to eternal hell. You need to be rescued from the consequences of your sin.
How Can I be Saved? Romans 10:9-10 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Beauty of salvation is that it is the free of God to mankind and available to all who are willing to accept it and obey His commandments in the Word of God. Repeat the prayer below, earnestly and sincerely from the heart and the Lord will save you.
Prayer of Salvation Father in heaven, I admit that I am a sinner. I have done many things that does not please you. I have lived my life for myself only. I am sorry, and I repent for my ways. I ask you to forgive me all my sins and cleanse me by the blood of your Son, Jesus Christ.. I believe that your Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross of Calvary for me, to save me and You raised Him up from the dead. You did what I could not do for myself. STUDY GUIDE WHY SHOULD I STUDY GOD’s WORD? God’s Words are in the Bible. This is the most important subject you will ever learn. All that you study in school and life, ends with this life. What you study here, stays with you in this life and in the next, all throughout eternity. The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword and the Christian’s charter. Here too, Heaven is opened and the gates of Hell disclosed. Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgment, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, rewards the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.
HOW SHOULD I STUDY? Your school textbooks change and the information keeps changing as new things come along. God’s word does not change. God’s word has been written with you and your life in mind. It will speak to you. ❏

The Twelve Disciples Matthew 10:1-16 Matthew 10 1 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. 5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. THE TWELVE DISCIPLES
1. Name four of the disciples.
Jesus had twelve very close friends who traveled with him. They were his disciples. Disciples are followers of Christ. The names of Jesus’ disciples were: Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. Jesus told his disciples to preach to “the lost sheep of Israel” that the kingdom of heaven was near. The disciples were also instructed to heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, and to drive out demons. Jesus told them not to bring anything with them. The disciples were to find a worthy person in each town or village and stay in his house until they left. Sometimes people did not welcome the disciples or listen to their words. THE WISE AND FOOLISH BUILDERS Jesus said, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on a rock. When the rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, it did not fall.” It was built on rock. Rock is a solid foundation. Jesus is like a rock. We can build our lives on him. When bad things happen in our lives, we will not be shaken because Jesus holds us up. Jesus then spoke about a foolish man who built his house on sand. When the rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, it fell with a great crash. This house was built on a bad foundation. When we build our lives on anything other than Jesus, our lives will not stand up to troubles. For additional details about this story, please read Matthew 7:24-29 in your Bible.

JESUS STOPS THE STORM Jesus and his disciples got into a boat. Without any warning, a furious storm came up on the lake. The waves were so large that they crashed over the boat. While the storm was raging, Jesus was asleep. The disciples woke Jesus up by saying, “Lord, save us! We are going to drown!” Jesus replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then Jesus got up and told the winds and the waves to stop and it was completely calm. Jesus calmed the storm! QUESTIONS
Leprosy is a skin disease. You can get leprosy if you touch someone who has it. One day a man with leprosy came to Jesus and fell on his knees. He begged Jesus, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus had compassion on the leper. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. Jesus told the man, “Be clean!” Immediately the man was healed of his leprosy! Jesus sent him away with a warning. He told the man, “Don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer sacrifices for your cleansing.” Instead, the man shared how Jesus had healed him of his leprosy. THE FAITH OF THE CENTURION While Jesus was in Capernaum a centurion’s servant was sick and about to die. The centurion heard about Jesus and sent some elders to him. The elders asked Jesus to come and heal the servant. The elders pleaded with Jesus, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” So Jesus went with them. Jesus was not far from the house when the centurion sent some friends to give Jesus a message. The centurion’s message was, “I did not consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.” Jesus was impressed with the faith of the centurion. JESUS RAISES A WIDOW’S SON Jesus went to a town called Nain with his disciples and a large crowd. As Jesus got close to the town gate, a dead man was being carried out in a coffin. The man’s mother was a widow because her husband has also died. There was a large crowd with the widow. When Jesus saw the widow, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” Then he went up and touched the coffin that the dead man lay in. Jesus said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk. Then Jesus gave the young man back to his mother. Everyone was amazed and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” the crowd said. “God has come to help his people.” The news about Jesus spread far and wide. The Sinful Woman Luke 7:36-50 Luke 7 36 Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, 38and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. 1. What did the sinful woman do when she arrived at the Pharisee’s house?
Jesus was invited to a Pharisee’s house for dinner. While Jesus was relaxing at the table, a woman who had lived a sinful life came up to him. As she stood behind him, she began to wet his feet with her tears. She wiped Jesus’ feet with her hair and poured perfume on his feet. The Pharisee said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is – that she is a sinner.” Jesus knew what the Pharisee was thinking and he told the Pharisee the following story: Two men owed money to a moneylender. One owed him a lot of money and one owed a little. The moneylender said both men did not have to pay the money back since they could not afford to do so. Jesus asked the Pharisee which one of the men would love the moneylender the most. The Pharisee said, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled.” Jesus said, “You have judged correctly.” Jesus pointed out that this woman had done everything to show how sorry she was for her many sins. 1. Why were there so many people in the house?
When the crowd heard that Jesus had come home, they crowded inside the house. There was no room left, not even outside the door. Jesus preached the word of God to the crowd. Four men carried a paralytic man to see Jesus. Since they could not get to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof and lowered the man to Jesus. When Jesus saw their faith, he said the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Some of the teachers of the law didn’t realize that Jesus was God’s son. They thought only God could forgive sins. Jesus knew what the teachers of the law were thinking. Jesus said to them, “Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk.’” Jesus wanted to show the teachers that he had the authority to forgive sins. God Speaks From Mount Sinai Exodus 19:1-25 Exodus 19 1 In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt—on the very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai. 2After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. 3 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes. 15Then he said to the people, “Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain from sexual relations.” 16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. 17Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain trembled violently, 19and the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder. Then Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him. 20 The LORD descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. GOD SPEAKS FROM MOUNT SINAI Three months after escaping from Egypt, the Israelites camped out at the base of Mount Sinai. Moses went up the mountain and the Lord spoke to him. The Lord told Moses to tell the people, “If you obey me, you will be my treasured possession; a holy nation.” So Moses went back down the mountain and spoke with the elders, or leaders, of the Israelites. They agreed to obey God. Moses went up the mountain again. Moses told the Lord that the people would obey him. The Lord told Moses to have the people wash their clothes and be ready in three days. Three days later, there was thunder, lightning, a thick cloud, and smoke on Mount Sinai. A trumpet blast could be heard and the mountain began to shake. The trumpet blast got louder and louder. The Lord was on the top of the mountain. The Lord told Moses to come up on the mountain. The Lord reminded Moses to tell the people not to climb the mountain or they would die. When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. Moses replied:
“It is not the sound of victory, it is not the sound of defeat; it is the sound of singing that I hear.” 19
When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. 20And he took the calf they had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it. 21 He said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?” 22 “Do not be angry, my lord,” Aaron answered. “You know how prone these people are to evil. 23They said to me, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’ 24So I told them, ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!” 25 Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies. 26So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, “Whoever is for the LORD, come to me.” And all the Levites rallied to him. 27 Then he said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.’” 28The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. 29Then Moses said, “You have been set apart to the LORD today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.” 30 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. But now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” 31 So Moses went back to the LORD and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. 32But now, please forgive their sin—but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.” 33 The LORD replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book. 34Now go, lead the people to the place I spoke of, and my angel will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin.” 35 And the LORD struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made.

1. Why was Moses on top of a hill?
Moses was up on the mountain speaking with the Lord for 40 days and 40 nights. The Israelites wanted a god to go before them, so they collected all their gold. They gave their gold to Aaron and he made the gold into the shape of a calf. The Lord told Moses to go down the mountain because the Israelites were not obeying. They had made an idol. One of the commandments was not to worship idols. The Lord wanted to destroy, or kill, the Israelites, but Moses talked with the Lord. The Lord decided not to destroy the Israelites after all. Moses went down the hill with the ten commandments written on two stone tablets. When Moses got to the foot of the mountain, he saw the people dancing and worshiping the golden calf. Moses got angry with the people and he threw down the stone tablets. They broke into pieces. Moses destroyed the golden calf. Moses called out to the people, “Whoever is for the Lord, the God of Israel, follow me.� Moses had these people kill the others who did not want to follow after the Lord. THE NEW STONE TABLETS The Lord told Moses to chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones. You might remember that Moses broke the first stone tablets that had the ten commandments written on them. Moses was upset when he saw the Israelites worshiping a golden calf so he broke them into pieces. After Moses chiseled two new stone tablets, he went back up the mountain. The Lord came down in a cloud to meet with Moses. Moses bowed to the ground and worshiped the Lord. Then the ten commandments were written on the new stone. After 40 days, Moses came back down the mountain. His face was shining because he had spoken with the Lord. At first, the people were scared. Gifts for the Tabernacle A Summary of Exodus 25-29 The Tabernacle symbolized the dwelling place of God in the midst of His people. The Tabernacle was a temporary place where God met with His chosen people. It was simply a tent of meeting. It was for use in the wilderness wandering of His people. The thing of importance is that it was God's dwelling place. The Tabernacle was the way in which a sinner might approach a holy God. It reminded men that sin separated him from God. The Tabernacle moved about the wilderness with the people. This Tabernacle in the wilderness was a copy of the real one in heaven. Seven times we are told that Moses was commanded to make the Sanctuary after the pattern of it which was shown him on the Mountain (Ex. 25:9, 40; 26:30; 27:8; Num. 8:4; Acts 7:44; Heb. 8:5). The Tabernacle was the place where sacrifice was made. The first item God gold Moses to build was the ark, later called the Ark of the Covenant. This was the most important single item associated with the tabernacle, modeled after the throne of God in heaven. God instructed Moses to put the Testimony - that is, a copy of the law - into the Ark of the Covenant. The mercy seat - actually, the lid to the Ark - was to be made of pure gold, and made with the sculpted figures of cherubim. Later, God would instruct Israel to put other things in the Ark as well - the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant (Hebrews 9:4). A table was to be made of acacia wood, overlaid with gold; 3 feet long, 1 foot, 6 inches wide, and 2 feet, 3 inches high. On the table was showbread associated with, and to be eaten before, the face of God. According to Leviticus 24:5-9, showbread was made of fine flower, and twelve cakes of showbread - one for each tribe of Israel - set on the table, sprinkled lightly with frankincense. Once a week, the bread was replaced and only priests could eat the old bread. A lampstand was hammered out of pure gold, with no specific dimensions given, but after the pattern of a modern-day menorah. It had one middle shaft with three branches coming out of each side, for a total of seven places for lamps. The seven lamps represent the presence of the Holy Spirit in heaven. Since the tabernacle itself was a completely covered tent, the only source of light was the lamps of the lampstand. The golden altar of incense sat in front of the curtain that separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies. It was a square with each side measuring 1.5 feet and was 3 feet high. It was made of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold. God commanded the priests to burn incense on the golden altar every morning and evening, the same time that the daily burnt offerings were made. The incense was to be left burning continually throughout the day and night as a pleasing aroma to the Lord. A bronze altar was made for burnt offering. This was the altar on which the sacrifices were made which This was where the blood was shed and the sinner was pardoned. No matter how good a person was, without the shedding of blood there was no forgiveness. You are the Temple of God! "Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are" (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). From the moment you put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ as your personal Savior He came by His Holy Spirit to dwell in your heart.

They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar. 14He washed the inner parts and the legs and burned them on top of the burnt offering on the altar. 15 Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people. THE ISRAELITES FOLLOW GOD A cloud could be seen above the tabernacle wherever it was. At night, the cloud looked like fire. The tabernacle was the place that the people worshipped the Lord. The tabernacle was not a building like a church. It was portable. That means the tabernacle could be moved whenever the Lord wanted the Israelites to move to a new place. If the cloud above the tabernacle began to move, the Israelites would pack up the tabernacle and all of its things. Can you see in the picture the men moving the ark of the covenant? They would follow the cloud until it stopped. When the cloud stopped, they would set up the tabernacle in that spot. The tabernacle could be in one spot for days, months, or even a year! But when the cloud began to move, the Israelites followed God to wherever he wanted them to go next. For more details, please read Numbers 9:15-23 in the Bible.

They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right now—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.” 16 The LORD said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have them come to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of the Spirit that is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you carry the burden of the people so that you will not have to carry it alone. 18 “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The LORD heard you when you wailed, “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!” Now the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat it. 19You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, 20but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it—because you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’” 21 But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them
meat to eat for a whole month!’ 22Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?” 23 The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’S arm too short? You will now see whether or not what I say will come true for you.” 24 So Moses went out and told the people what the LORD had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the Tent. 25Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took of the Spirit that was on him and put the Spirit on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again. 26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the Tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. 27A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28 Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!” 29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the LORD’S people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!” 30Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp. 31 Now a wind went out from the LORD and drove quail in from the sea. It brought them down all around the camp to about three feet above the ground, as far as a day’s walk in any direction. 32All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail. QUAIL FROM THE LORD The Israelites began to complain again to the Lord about food to eat. The Lord gave them manna each morning, but they were growing tired of it. Some of the Israelites talked about the food they used to eat in Egypt when they were slaves. Moses and the Lord were angry because the Israelites kept complaining. Moses asked the Lord what he should do to find the people meat to eat. The Lord told Moses to get 70 of Israel’s elders, or leaders. They met Moses in the tabernacle. The Lord told the elders that he would give them meat for one whole month. In fact, there would be so much meat that the people would get sick of it! The Lord sent a wind that blew quail, a type of bird, in from the sea. The quail completely covered the land. While the people ate the quail, the Lord sent a plague to punish the people for complaining. Many people died. For more details, please read Numbers 11:4-35 in the Bible.

The LORD said to Moses, 2“Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees on it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.) 21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin as far as Rehob, toward Lebo
Hamath. 22They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs. 24That place was called the Valley of Eshcol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. 25 At the end of forty days they returned from exploring the land. 26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. 27They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. 29The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan.” 30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” 32And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). 33We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth—became insolent 2and rose up against Moses. With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council. 3They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD’S assembly?” 4 When Moses heard this, he fell facedown. 5Then he said to Korah and all his followers: “In the morning the LORD will show who belongs to him and who is holy, and he will have that person come near him. The man he chooses he will cause to come near him. 6You, Korah, and all your followers are to do this: Take censers 7and tomorrow put fire and incense in them before the LORD. The man the LORD chooses will be the one who is holy. You and Aaron are to present your censers also.” 18So each man took his censer, put fire and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 19When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition to them at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the entire assembly. 20The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 21 “Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once.” 22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, “O God, God of the spirits of all mankind, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?” 23 Then the LORD said to Moses, 24“Say to the assembly, ‘Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.’” 25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. 26He warned the assembly, “Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.” 27So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents. 28 Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea: 29If these men die a natural death and experience only what usually happens to men, then the LORD has not sent me. 30But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.” 31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart 32and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all Korah’s men and all their possessions. 33They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. 34At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, “The earth is going to swallow us too!” 35 And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.

THREE REBELLIOUS LEADERS Moses and Aaron continued to lead the Israelite people. Three leaders named Korah, Dathan, and Abiram decided that they did not like the fact the Moses and Aaron were leading them. The three rebellious leaders also gathered 250 other leaders to oppose Moses and Aaron. They asked Moses and Aaron, “Why do you set yourselves above us?” Moses was sad when he heard this because God had chosen him and Aaron to lead the people. The leaders complained that they were living in a desert where life was difficult. Moses told Korah and his followers to take their censers (covered containers), put incense in them, and present them before the Lord. The Lord saw all the leaders gathered outside the Tent of Meeting with their censers. The Lord was angry with the leaders. He told Moses and Aaron to tell the people to step away from the tents of the three wicked leaders. The Lord was very upset with the leaders for rebelling against Moses and Aaron. He caused the earth to open up and swallow the leaders’ homes, families, and everything that they owned. The Lord sent fire which burned up the other 250 leaders who also complained! AARON’S STAFF In Israel there were 12 different groups of people. Each group was called a tribe. And each tribe had a leader. The Lord was tired of the Israelites always complaining about anything and everything including who to follow. The Lord had already destroyed three rebellious leaders and another 250 leaders who had complained to Moses and Aaron. The Lord told Moses to get a staff (stick) from each of the 12 leaders. Moses was instructed to write each leader’s name on their staffs. The Lord told Moses to put the staffs inside the Tent of the Testimony which was also called the tabernacle. The Lord had a plan to choose a priest for the tabernacle. One of the staffs would begin to sprout, or grow. The next day, Moses went into the tabernacle and saw something amazing. Aaron’s staff not only sprouted, but also had beautiful flowers and almonds growing from it! This was a sure sign from the Lord that Aaron, from the tribe of Levi, would be the priest of the tabernacle. The Lord told Moses to put Aaron’s staff in front of the Ark of the Covenant to be a reminder to the rebellious people that the Lord had chosen Aaron to lead them. “You may not pass through.” Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army. 21Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory, Israel turned away from them. 22 The whole Israelite community set out from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor. 23At Mount Hor, near the border of Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 24“Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I give the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah. 25Get Aaron and his son Eleazar and take them up Mount Hor. 26Remove Aaron’s garments and put them on his son Eleazar, for Aaron will be gathered to his people; he will die there.” 27 Moses did as the LORD commanded: They went up Mount Hor in the sight of the whole community. 28 Moses removed Aaron’s garments and put them on his son Eleazar. And Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain, 29and when the whole community learned that Aaron had died, the entire house of Israel mourned for him thirty days.

AARON DIES Moses and the Israelites continued to travel through the desert. They traveled to the edge of place called Edom. They wanted to pass through the land of Edom, so Moses sent messengers to get permission from the king. The messengers told the king that the Israelites would not travel through any vineyard or drink any of their water. The king of Edom said, “You may not pass through here. If you do, we will attack you.” The Israelites asked the king again. The King said no and sent his army after the Israelites. The Israelites traveled to Mount Hor. The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron. He told them that they would not enter the Promised Land, known as Canaan, because they had disobeyed. The Lord told Aaron to take his son Eleazer up to the top of Mount Hor. At the top of the mountain, Moses took Aaron’s clothes and put them on Eleazar. This was a sign that Aaron was about to die. Moses and Eleazar went down the mountain. Aaron stayed on the mountain where he later died. The Israelites were sad for 30 days because Aaron died. For more on this story, read Numbers 20:14-29 in your Bible.
