Desde aquí nos gustaría dar la enhorabuena a todos los concejales de la zona por habernos proporcionado una Semana Cultural llena de eventos, los cuales han abarcado desde teatro, música, pintura, poesía, homenajes, bailes, etc y todo ello con una acogida magnífica por parte de todos los asistentes. También hay que destacar el Día de la Provincia de Málaga celebrado en Casares con la asistencia destacada de la premiada, entre otros, de la Baronesa Thyssen. Este mes de mayo, seguimos con las fiestas, entre ellas, la conocida y popular Fiesta de San Isidro en Estepona. Y a parte de ésta, también tendremos varios eventos que se celebrarán en Manilva, como es el Día Internacional de las Familias. Llegada la Primavera, los Ayuntamientos se ponen a adecentar y embellecer zonas turísticas, cosa muy de agradecer, ya que al fin y al cabo esto atrae a visitantes, que es una de las fuentes más importantes de ingresos que tenemos en la costa. Tenemos que mencionar lo bonito que está quedando el Puerto de la Duquesa en Manilva y Estepona con todo el colorido de flores, y los magníficos murales artísticos, tanto de una localidad como de la otra. Esperamos por tanto que disfrutéis de un mes de mayo lleno de color y olor, al igual que disfrutéis al leer nuestro periódico, y una vez más, gracias por elegirnos como vuestro medio de información. Now that May has arrived I’m sure I would be safe in saying that Summer is just around the corner without too much risk of having to eat my words. Providing a taste of the summer to come is our area’s first feria of the year, with Estepona celebrating one of it’s Patron Saints (yes Estepona has two!) San Isidro Labrador with its agricultural fair and romeria this month. One good thing that has come from the current economic situation, and there are precious few of those, is that many of these events are returning to their original formats with all the expensive performers and extravagant celebrations have made way for local musicians and traditional activities. Well I do try to find some benefit in even the most dire circumstances. Talking of local musicians for the past couple of years I have been involved with a colleague in a project by the name of El Intercambio which aims to bring the great wealth of musical talent we have here in Andalucia to a wider audience. To that effect we have been producing a weekly radio show “The Odd Couple” which has been going out on a local radio station, Castle Radio FM as well as being available online. You might think this odd for a newspaper editor, but it fits perfectly with The Resident’s ethos of presenting local news and information of interest to local residents and visitors,an ethos we have stuck to since the very first issue. Well that’s me done waving the ‘local’ flag, I hope you enjoy this latest issue, so until next month, goodbye for now...

Las obras del Teatro de Estepona comenzarán en un mes El alcalde de Estepona, José María García Urbano, firmó el contrato con la adjudicataria de la construcción del teatroauditorio de la Costa del Sol. El regidor llegó a un acuerdo con la concesionaria, Construcciones Sánchez Domínguez-Sando S.A., para contratar a empresas suministradoras y trabajadores de Estepona durante los trabajos. García Urbano añadió que las obras que tendrán un plazo de ejecución de 15 meses– darán comienzo en un máximo de 30 días.

Estepona Theatre works will begin in one month The Mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, has reached an agreement with a contractor to build the new Costa del Sol Theatre. Construcciones Sanchez Dominguez-Sando SA have agreed with the mayor to hire supply companies and workers local to Estepona during the building process. Garcia added that the 15 months of work involved in this project will begin in a maximum of 30 days.

La Oficina de la Delegación de Residentes Extranjeros se Reubica La principal oficina de turismo en el centro del municipio de Estepona ha cerrado y el personal ha sido reubicado a la oficina de turismo enfrente de la entrada al Puerto. La Delegación de Residentes Extranjeros ahora también se encuentra en esta oficina. Francine tiene años de experiencia y siempre puede aconsejar a cualquier extranjero que lo necesite cuando tenga problemas. Los dos autobuses locales nuevos paran cerca de esta oficina.

Foreign Residents department office has moved Estepona's main Tourist Office in the town centre is now closed and the staff have relocated to the Tourism Information Office opposite the entrance to the Port. The Foreign Residents’ Department is also now operating from there.

El Ayuntamiento inaugura el cuarto mural artístico El Ayuntamiento de Estepona inaugurará el cuarto de los murales artísticos incluidos dentro del plan de embellecimiento de las barriadas. Con esta iniciativa se pretende poner en valor los barrios del municipio, para que se conviertan en lugares “singulares” por su arte y en foco de atracción turística. El mural de hoy, que ha sido realizado por la artista Blanca Larrauri, está ubicado en un edificio de la prolongación de la avenida San Lorenzo y representa tres escenas marineras. “La obra -que lleva por título ‘Almas del Mar’- recoge el momento en que los barcos regresan de faenar, a pescadores cosiendo las redes y a embarcaciones amarradas en el puerto”, ha explicado Fernández-Fígares, que ha indicado que la pintura “es un homenaje a la Estepona marinera”. El Ayuntamiento también iniciará en breve la ejecución de otros tres murales en el municipio. En concreto, el artista Néstor

Prada elaborará uno en la calle San Roque, el pintor y escultor Francisco Alarcón proyectará otro en la calle Cid, mientras que Joaquín Aguilera realizará un tercero en la calle Melilla, que se encuentra junto a la estación de autobuses. Además, la artista Ana Cecilia Salinas está ultimando otro en la avenida Andalucía, que será inaugurado en fechas próximas. Ruta de murales Estos cuatro murales se sumarán a los ya realizados en la barriadas Mar y Sierra, Los Televisores y Tres Banderas. El equipo de gobierno también está instalando esculturas en distintos puntos de Estepona para embellecer el municipio. Para ello cuentan con artistas locales como Toby Govan, Francisco Alarcón y Joaquín Aguilera, así como escultores de prestigio internacional como Santiago de Santiago.

Town Hall unveils the fourth in its series of murals Estepona has unveiled the fourth in the series of giant murals which are brightening up some of the town’s housing estates. The aim is to not only to foster pride in local residents, but to present an attractive face for visiting tourists with these unique pieces of art. This latest piece was created by local artist Blanca Larrauri and is painted on an apartment block in the Prolongación de la Avenida San Lorenzo, entitled ‘Almas del Mar’ (Soul of the Sea) it comprises three scenes which pay homage to Estepona’s maritime industry.

This is the latest of such works, the previous being by artist Néstor Prada created in calle San Roque, Francisco Alarcón in calle Cid, and a third by Joaquín Aguilera in calle Melilla. A fifth work by Ana Cecilia Salinas is currently in progress and will be unveiled shortly. Besides these giant murals the Town Hall has also installed a number of iconic sculptures throughout the town, with works by such local artists such as Toby Govan, Francisco Alarcón and Joaquín Aguilera, as well as internationally renowned artists as Santiago de Santiago.

El Ayuntamiento presenta la IV edición de la gala ‘Esteponero del Año’ La concejala del área Sociocultural, María Dolores Espinosa, ha presentado la IV edición de la gala ‘Esteponero del Año’, que organiza el Club Rotary de Estepona para premiar a entidades o personas que realizan alguna labor en beneficio de la comunidad esteponera. La edil ha agradecido el trabajo que desde 1995 realizan los rotarios en nuestro municipio y ha comentado que “siempre están dispuestos a atender a las personas que más lo necesitan”. En esta edición, el galardón será para Antonia Eugenia Núñez Guerra por su carácter emprendedor y sus méritos como directora del colegio San José, que se ha convertido en uno de los centros educativos de referencia en Andalucía. El Carnaval y su Arte con la Unión Estepona Club de Fútbol La junta gestora de la Unión Estepona Club de Fútbol continúa organizando diferentes actividades y eventos con el fin de recaudar fondos económicos para afrontar el compromiso con los jugadores de la plantilla del equipo de Tercera División y otros gastos. El próximo viernes 10 de mayo el Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de Estepona acogerá una interesante velada de carnaval denominado ¨El Carnaval y su Arte con la Unión Estepona CF¨. En este festival participarán cinco agrupaciones, dos comparsas, dos chirigotas y un cuarteto. En el apartado de comparsas hay que destacar la presencia de las dos primeras clasificadas en la última edición del Concurso Oficial de Agrupaciones celebrado en el Gran Teatro Falla de Cádiz. ¨La Comparsa del Genio¨, primer premio en el COAC 2013, con autoría del veterano autor Antonio Martín García y la dirección de reconocido Ángel Subiela; y ¨Los Válidos¨, segundo premio en su primera participación con letra y música de José Manuel Cardoso Romero y Enrique García Rosado ¨Kike Remolino¨, bajo la dirección del chiclanero Agustín Correa. En la modalidad de chirigotas actuarán las chirigotas gaditanas ¨Los Recortaos¨, de Kike Remolino, que en los últimos años ha conseguido primeros premios con

U Estepona CF football team's management continues its fundraising efforts with a festival of Carnival celebrations at the Palacio de Congresos in Estepona on Friday May 10. There will be a packed programme of entertainment including performances from some of the top chirigotas and comparsas from this year's carnival competition in Cadiz. The line up features: "La Comparsa del Genio", and "Los Válido", who took first and second place respectively at this year's event. "Kike Remolino", "Los

Recortaos", "Salón de belleza el Tijerita", "Las Pito-Risas"; "Contigo Aprendí", "Canijo de Carmona", and "Los que están al pie del Cañón" complete the line up. Fiestas de San Isidro Labrador en Estepona Estepona celebra su Santo Patrón, San Isidro Labrador, con la romería el 5 de mayo y la feria agrícola del 14 al 19 de mayo. San Isidro Labrador, que por cierto es también el patrón de Madrid, vivió en Madrid durante el siglo XII, cuando no era más que una aldea, donde trabajó como un humilde granjero. Él siempre estaba absorto en la oración, pero según la leyenda su cargo de trabajo fue asumido por los ángeles para dejarle tiempo para sus devociones. La romería o peregrinación tuvo lugar en la Ermita de San Isidro en el parque de Los Pedregales el domingo 5 de mayo, y atrajo a miles de Esteponeros que acudieron al parque para celebrar sus

fiestas patronales con picnics, barbacoas, ¡y unas cuantas bebidas! El día del santo San Isidro Labrador en realidad se celebra el 15 de mayo, que este año cae en miércoles, y es tradicionalmente acompañado de una feria con celebraciones, concursos, procesiones por toda la ciudad y atracciones en el recinto ferial. La feria de este año tendrá lugar del martes 14 al domingo 19, finalizando con un espectáculo de fuegos artificiales. También se espera que cierren la mayoría de los comercios y empresas locales el día 15, miércoles, por ser un día de fiesta local en Estepona. Programa completo en página 8.

San Isidro celebrations in Estepona Estepona celebrates its Patron Saint, San Isidro Labrador, this month with a Romeria (pilgrimage) on the 5th May and the agricultural fair from the 14th to the 19th May. San Isidro Labrador, who incidentally is also Madrid’s patron, lived in Madrid during the 12th century when it was but a village, where he worked as a lowly farm labourer. He was always engrossed in prayer but according to legend his workload was taken on by angels so as to leave him time for his devotions, must remember that one! The Romeria or pilgrimage will be held at the Ermita San Isidro at the Las Pedregales park on Sunday, 5th May, and draws thousands of Esteponeros who go

to the park to party and celebrate their patron saint with picnics, barbecues, and a few drinks! The saint’s day San Isidro Labrador is actually celebrated on the 15th May, which this year falls on Wednesday, and this is traditionally accompanied by a feria with celebrations, competitions, processions throughout the town and a funfair at the fairground. This year’s feria runs from Tuesday 14th to Sunday the 19th when the feria will reach its finale with a firework display. Worth noting also is that Wednesday, 15th is a local holiday in Estepona so expect many of the shops and businesses to be closed. Full Programme on Page 8.

Ray Oldfield, vicepresidente y tesorero de la Asociación de Residentes Extranjeros de Estepona AREME, fue concedido el premio Residente del Año en las celebraciones de este año del Día de Residentes Extranjeros en el Palacio de Congresos de Estepona. Ray ha estado al servicio de la comunidad extranjera de Estepona desde hace muchos años, más recientemente como vicepresidente y tesorero de AREME, que reúne a personas de diferentes nacionalidades, comunidades, clubes y

asociaciones, y que también es responsable de la organización del Festival del Día Extranjeros que una vez más ha sido un gran éxito. AREME también lleva a cabo foros informativos con invitados que hablan sobre cuestiones que afectan a los residentes extranjeros, así como reuniones por las mañanas para tomar café y el mercadillo sobre mesas. Ray Oldfield, Vice President and Treasurer of Estepona’s Foreign Residents Association, AREME, was presented with the Resident of the Year award at this year’s Foreign Residents Day celebrations at the Palacio de Congresos in Estepona. Ray has been serving Estepona’s foreign community for many years now, most recently as Vice President and Treasurer of AREME, which draws together people from many different nationalities, communities,

clubs and associations and which is also responsible for staging the Foreign Residents Day Festival which once again was a great success. AREME holds regular information forums with invited guest speakers addressing issues affecting foreign residents, as well as regular coffee mornings and table sales. El Ayuntamiento de Estepona, ha organizado el II Concurso de Karaoke con el que se pretende elegir a los mejores intérpretes aficionados a la interpretación musical, en una gala que tendrá lugar el próximo 24 de mayo, a las 20:00 horas, en el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel, donde el jurado, compuesto por miembros relacionados con el ámbito musical, elegirá a los tres mejores intérpretes. El certamen constará de dos fases, una eliminatoria en el caso de que se inscriban más de 15 participantes, y una final, a la que llegarán al menos 15 concursantes. En cuanto a las bases del concurso, podrá participar cualquier persona mayor de 15 años de edad y que profesionalmente no se dedique a la música. Los interesados en participar tendrán que inscribirse en la delegación de Cultura o a través del correo electrónico cultura@estepona.es, y las solicitudes deberán ir acompañadas de fotografía y copia del DNI. El certamen, de categoría única, consistirá en la interpretación de una canción

que deberá ser seleccionada entre el repertorio que pondrá la organización a disposición de los concursantes. Por otra parte, el Consistorio ofrecerá a los clasificados la oportunidad de realizar ensayos en el escenario donde tendrá lugar la actuación. This April saw the largest influx of Spanish members for many years, attracted by this year’s social programme, free English lessons, and the very noticeable help and encouragement the club is receiving from the Ayuntamiento of Casares in promoting even more of the integration that they are well known for. For example,

it was the Councillor for Casares Costa’s idea to sponsor the “St George’s day” celebration, providing and installing the stalls for the mini market, the music, a bouncy castle and the English flags surrounding the amphitheatre. All this on a beautiful day and within the beautiful setting of the Rosario Gardens.

La entrega de las medallas de oro de la provincia se ha celebrado en Casares con la asistencia de importantes personalidades públicas. Antonia Morera aprovechó la presencia de representantes de todas las instituciones del estado para pedir que se aseguraran los derechos sociales en igualdad de condiciones para toda la ciudadanía, además de promocionar los atributos del municipio de Casares. Durante toda la mañana se vivió un gran ambiente en la localidad por el fuerte dispositivo de seguridad y por la llegada de los más de 300 invitados a la celebración del Día de la Provincia de Málaga, especialmente la más popular de las premiadas, la baronesa Thyssen. Tras los saludos en la Plaza de España, y la toma de fotografías ante el busto de Blas Infante, los asistentes se han dirigido al Centro Cultural Blas Infante, en el recinto del castillo, donde ha comenzado el acto protocolario a las 12.30 h de la mañana.

Major public figures attended the ceremony to award the provincial gold medals in Casares. Antonia Morera took the opportunity to request equal social rights for all residents in the presence of representatives from all state institutions as well as showcasing some of Casares’ main attributes. There was a great atmosphere throughout the morning in the town aided by heavy security and the arrival of more than 300 guests to the celebration of Malaga’s Province Day, especially the most popular of the awardees, the Baroness Thyssen. After greeting the guests in the Plaza de España, and taking pictures with the bust of Blas Infante, attendees were directed to the Blas Infante Cultural Centre, in the grounds of the castle where the formal ceremony began at 12.30 pm in the afternoon.

The event was presented by the mayoress, after which she began awarding Honorary Distinctions to the emergency services (Military Emergency Unit of the Armed Forces, the Guardia Civil, representatives from Infoca and the Provincial Fire Consortium (CPB)), for their joint efforts during natural disasters in 2012, the fire in Mijas and flooding last autumn, and to the Secretary of honor of the Swedish Presidential Government, Wieslander, for his dedication to the projection of a real and positive view of the cultural values of the province to the Swedish government and community. The Mayoress proceeded to award Cudeca for supporting cancer patients and their families, the Confederation of Employers of Malaga, for contributing to the economic development of the province, the SUR newspaper on the 75th anniversary of its founding, and Carmen Cervera, the Baroness Thyssen, for creating a museum that bears her name in Malaga.

Turismo organiza un viaje a la Feria de Jerez

Desde la delegación de Turismo se ha organizado un viaje a la feria de Jerez para el próximo 12 de mayo. La hora de salida sería en Manilva, a las 10.25h, desde Sabinillas a las 10.30 y desde el Castillo, a las 10.35h. El precio del autobús sería de 10 euros y autobús más comida, 25 euros.

El mes pasado tuvo lugar la semana cultural, inaugurándose con la ceremonia de agradecimiento a varios residentes locales por su colaboración y contribución con Manilva.El acto se celebró en la puerta del Ayuntamiento, donde se concentraron decenas de vecinos. La alcaldesa de Manilva, Antonia Muñoz Vázquez y la edil de Cultura, Eva Galindo agradecieron al público su asistencia. Las alumnas de la Escuela municipal de Pintura de Charo López colocaron sus lienzos y dieron un toque bohemio al acto, que también contó con la lectura de poesías y el homenaje por parte del Ayuntamiento a la vecina, María Rodríguez Mena, a quien se le ha editado su libro "Poemas con Amor", donde el concejal y sobrino de la citada artista, Mario Jiménez,

leyó uno de sus poemas. A la guitarra acompañando las lecturas estuvo el alumno de la Escuela de Música, Francisco Sánchez. Además de los citados responsables municipales, estuvieron presentes Diego Urieta, Diego Díaz, Antonio Parra, Paqui López y Marcos Ruiz. La alcaldesa y el equipo de gobierno también hizo una especie de reconocimiento público a los residentes extranjeros: Gary Walters, Eddy Gladstone, John Chappell y Malcolm Sexton por la buena labor que están desempeñando en el municipio en diferentes facetas. También participaron vecinas en la lectura de poemas, alumnos y una representación de los pensionistas de Manilva. La poetisa Isaura Díaz, pondría el broche final al acto.

Last month's Semana Cultural was launched with a special ceremony paying tribute to local residents who had contributed to Manilva's cultural landscape. The ceremony took place in front of the Town Hall in Manilva overseen by the Mayoress Manilva, Antonia Muñoz Vázquez, and the councillor for Culture, Eva Galindo. With an art display by the students of the Charo Lopez School of Painting providing the background there were poetry readings and a special homage to the author of the book "Poemas con Amor", María Rodríguez Mena. The Mayoress and governing councillors then proceeded to present award to four local foreign residents in recognition for their contribution in various ways to the good of the municipality: Gary Walters from Manilva Media Workshop and The Resident, Eddy Gladstone of the Web Express Guide, John Chappell and local blogger Malcolm Sexton.

Tanto la alcaldesa, Antonia Muñoz, como el concejal de Urbanismo, Diego Urieta mostraron su satisfacción por este incremento en el patrimonio municipal, lo que supone demostrar el compromiso con la ciudadanía de crear servicios y velar por los intereses de los manilveños.

Comienzan los trabajos en la zona de Pedraza

En pasados días, Mario Jiménez, concejal de Infraestructura y Obras, acompañado de los directores de Área, Juan Pareja y Dean Tyler mantenían una reunión con trece vecinos de la zona conocida como Pedraza en Manilva para buscar una solución al acceso de dicha vía. La reunión, en la que destacó la cordialidad y la predisposición por ambas partes, fue muy satisfactoria ya que se llegó a un acuerdo para arreglar el acceso, muy deteriorado por las últimas lluvias, siendo estos vecinos quienes pongan el

material y el Ayuntamiento la mano de obra. Ya han dado comienzo los trabajos y básicamente se colocará una nueva rodadura de hormigón. Según comentaba Mario Jiménez, "nuestro objetivo es mejorar todas las infraestructuras del municipio y en este caso, la colaboración entre vecinos y Ayuntamiento ha sido fundamental para llegar a un entendimiento y poder acometer las obras necesarias para que Pedraza pueda ser transitado sin ningún tipo de inconveniente", apuntó.

Diego Diaz y Mario Jiménez, además, Felipe Alcaraz, quien dedicó una poesía del autor. Este acto está encuadrado dentro del programa de la Semana Cultural, cuyo homenaje a Alberti continuaba en Villa Matilde. Este homenaje al poeta Gaditano fue presentado por el escritor Felipe Alcaraz.

As part of the cultural week celebrations a ceremony was held to unveil a plaque in Calle Aurora de Aldornoz, Punta Almina, Sabinillas. The plaque was originally erected in 1981, and portrays the text of

a poem by eminent poet Rafael Alberti, which was written to commemorate the opening of the Punta Almina complex, one of the first developments aimed at residential tourism in Manilva.

Election of this year's Feria Queen and Ladies Manilva's Fiestas Department has announced that the election for this year's Feria Queens and Ladies will be held at the El Duque Park on Friday May 31 beginning at 7.30 pm. There are two categories: Juveniles open to girls born in 2003; and Infantiles open to girls born in 1992, 1993 or 1994. The younger category is selected by lottery, with a panel of judges selecting the older girls. Antonia Muñoz y Paqui López entregan a Vanina un cheque por 2.692 euros La alcaldesa de Manilva, Antonia Muñoz Vázquez, acompañada de la concejala de Bienestar Social, Paqui López y los ediles, Marcos Ruiz y Eva Galindo, hicieron entrega a Vanina y su familia la recaudación tanto del bingo benéfico como de las donaciones de los vecinos. El cheque, que asciende a 2.692 euros servirá, además de para comprar los billetes de avión a Barcelona, para visitar la Clínica Instituto Universitario Dexeus en la ciudad Condal y realizarle un diagnóstico a Vanina y encontrar una solución a su problema de salud. De dicho estudio se sacarán las conclusiones oportunas y se podrá decidir si es posible la operación que permita que Vanina pueda conseguir su sueño.

Desde el Ayuntamiento de Manilva y en particular, desde la delegación de Bienestar Social se agradece la colaboración ciudadana y de los comercios por su aportación e implicación.

La delegación de Turismo que dirige Emilio López Berenguer propone varios concursos. Uno de fotografía con el lema “Nuestras esencias” y otro de Fachadas y Rincones. The first is a photography competition with the theme ‘Essence of Manilva’ which is looking for the photograph which best captures the essence of Manilva. Los aparcamientos de Pozo del Rey, 100% de financiación La alcaldesa de Manilva, Antonia Muñoz Vázquez y el concejal de Urbanismo, Diego Urieta, mantuvieron una reunión con el Director Territorial de Málaga de Unicaja, Salvador Navarro Reyes y representantes territoriales para tratar varios asuntos de interés para el municipio. Uno de los principales temas fue la venta y financiación de los aparcamientos de Pozo del Rey. Los responsables municipales han conseguido que dicha financiación para los vecinos interesados sea de un 100%. Dentro de las características de dicho acuerdo, también está la de financiar en las mejores condiciones económicas y con el máximo de tiempo posible para liquidarla. El coste de las plazas de aparcamientos será de unos 6.000 € aproximadamente con IVA incluido a expensas de la valoración definitiva.

Medio Ambiente instala cartelería en la Reserva Ecológica La delegación de Medio Ambiente ha dado las órdenes oportunas para instalar la cartelería en la Reserva Ecológica de Manilva. En dicha cartelería se especifica el recorrido, la situación y los iconos de lo que está permitido, como es el senderismo o el recorrido en bicicleta y lo no permitido, el tránsito de vehículos y las acampadas. Emilio López Berenguer, edil de Medio Ambiente quiere hacer un llamamiento para concienciar a la población de la importancia del respeto al entorno y que puedan disfrutar de esta reserva tan atractiva y en un marco inigualable.

Curso de Manipulador de Alimentos

La delegación de Fomento de Empleo organiza para el sábado 8 de junio un nuevo Curso de Manipulador de Alimentos en el Centro de Formación de Sabinillas. Según informaba el edil responsable del área, Marcos Ruiz, el único requisito es estar empadronado en Manilva. El curso tendrá un coste de 40€. Cuando se vaya a realizar la inscripción se entregarán 10€ y el resto el mismo día del curso. Se cuenta con 15 plazas que irán por orden de inscripción y la pueden hacer efectiva en el edificio de Usos Múltiples o en la segunda planta del Ayuntamiento de Manilva, donde tendrán que rellenar una solicitud. El citado edil anima a los vecinos a participar en este curso de cara a afrontar el mercado laboral con más posibilidades.

Food Handling Course Manilva’s Employment Development department has organised a food handling course to be held at the Training Centre in Sabinillas on Saturday June 8. Department head, Councillor Marcos Ruiz, announced that the only requirement to attend the course is that you are registered on the Manilva padron. The course costs 40 euros, with 10 euros required on registration and the balance to be paid on the day of the course. There are 15 places available and you can register at the Usos Multiples building in Sabinillas or at the Town Hall in Manilva. The councillor advises people to take the course to improve their employment possibilities.

Environment Department installs information boards in Ecological Reserve The Environment Department has begun to install information boards in Manilva’s Ecological Reserve. The aim is to provide details regarding the routes for hiking and cycling ande also information of what is prohibited, motor vehicles and camping for example. Emilio López Berenguer, Environment Councillor, hopes that this will raise awareness of respecting the environment and enable people to enjoy this attractive and unique setting.

Comienza la realización de las pistas deportivas del complejo de Sabinillas La alcaldesa de Manilva, Antonia Muñoz Vázquez firmaba en pasados días el acta de replanteo de las obras de la primera fase del complejo deportivo de Sabinillas. Con esta actuación, se acometerían las obras de todo el exterior del recinto, seis pistas de padel, una pista de fútbol sala y una pista de tenis, con lo que se comienza el cumplimiento del compromiso adquirido por el equipo. Una vez finalizadas las obras comenzará la segunda fase consistente en la realización del vestuario, gimnasio y dos salas de usos múltiples.

Plazo del I.V.T.M. y requisitos para vehículos históricos Tal y como ha venido informando la delegación de Hacienda del Ayuntamiento de Manilva en los medios de comunicación locales, el plazo de pago voluntario del Impuesto de Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica finaliza el 20 de mayo de 2013. Esa es la fecha designada por el Patronato de Recaudación de la Diputación Provincial de Málaga para que todos los vecinos puedan abonarlo con tiempo suficiente y para no devengar a partir de esa fecha los recargos e intereses correspondientes a la vía ejecutiva. Para cualquier tipo de información o para retirar los recibos, en el caso de que no hayan llegado al domicilio, pueden hacerlo en las oficinas del Patronato, sito en C/Doctor Álvarez Leiva, 6, en Manilva o en cualquier oficina de otra localidad. Para obtenerlo deben rellenar la solicitud de beneficio fiscal en el I.V.T.M informando de la matrícula y el número de bastidor y aportar fotocopias de la tarjeta técnica del vehículo y del permiso de circulación. El citado edil de Hacienda informaba a la ciudadanía que el sello en Manilva está al mínimo legal y que no hay otro municipio con una tasa más barata.

El edil responsable de Playas, Antonio Parra, ha informado sobre las actuaciones que se tienen previstas de cara al período estival en el litoral. Además de las pasarelas, que ya se están colocando, el objetivo es dotar a las playas del municipio de unas buenas infraestructuras y servicios para que los vecinos y visitantes puedan disfrutarlas plenamente. Además de lo material, habrá un equipo humano de limpieza y socorrismo acorde con las necesidades que se tienen en esta época, donde la población se triplica y la visita a las playas es masiva.

Work started to prepare Manilva’s beaches for the summer season Antonio Parra, Manilva’s councillor responsible for beaches, has announced the start of activities to prepare the municipality’s beaches for the busy summer season. Besides the installation of boardwalks other measures are being carried to ensure the beaches have the best facilities and services including cleaning and lifeguard teams to serve the large number of visitors which triples the local population during the summer months.

PUERTO DE LA DUQUESA - El Ayuntamiento mejora las infraestructuras del término Antonia Muñoz Vázquez ha declarado que ya se han planificado junto a la delegación de Infraestructura y Obras, cuyo concejal es Mario Jiménez, once obras pequeñas y medianas dentro de la localidad. Algunos de estos trabajos se van realizar en urbanizaciones como Aldea Beach, los Hidalgos, y en el Hacho con el reasfaltado de algunas calles. Estas labores son una demanda de los vecinos y desde alcaldía se han puesto en marcha las labores oportunas para que estas zonas, que también forman parte de Manilva, presenten una imagen limpia, renovada y de seguridad. También se va a trabajar en el Puerto de la Duquesa, adecentando calles y callejones y mejorando la solería. También se verá beneficiada la zona de Cornisa del Sol y las guarderías municipales. En lo que respecta al núcleo de Manilva, además de las obras que ya se están ejecutando, como las de Pozo del Rey, se van a realizar actuaciones en las calles Lobato, Vela y Nobel, y se va a adquirir una vivienda en la calle Vela, para así poder unir las calles Duquesa y Vela y que así haya más calles peatonales y transitables. En cuanto al plan de embellecimiento que se está llevando a cabo en el municipio, ha hecho referencia a los trabajos en el Paseo Marítimo como los nuevos bancos y papeleras y los macetones que se han colocado en algunos puntos de la localidad. Además, gracias al Plan Qualifica, el paseo marítimo de Sabinillas podrá continuarse. También se está trabajando en el adecentamiento de varias parcelas municipales y en el retirado de algunas vayas que entorpecen la visibilidad de las personas que nos visitan. La remodelación de la Iglesia de Santa Ana se convierte en realidad

Una vez firmada el acta de replanteo, han comenzado las obras de la Iglesia de Santa Ana. Los trabajos consistirán, además de arreglar todas las zonas en precario, centrarse en la bóveda, las paredes, las humedades y los desperfectos en general que harán que la Iglesia de Santa Ana esté totalmente remodelada respetando siempre su histórica construcción. Las obras se prevé que estén finalizadas a finales de año y tanto la alcaldesa como el párroco han querido tranquilizar a las familias que celebrarán la comunión de sus hijos este año, ya que, como ha ocurrido con la Semana Santa, se podrán llevar a cabo.

Santa Ana Church refurbishment works are underway Now that all the documents have been signed refurbishment work has begun on Manilva’s Santa Ana church. Repairs are being carried out to areas of the walls and roof which have deteriorated over the years and to address the damp problem which will completely restore this historic building. Work is expected to be completed by the end of the year and the Mayoress and Pastor would like to assure local families that facilities are in place for their children’s communions this year, similar to those provided for Semana Santa.

New Tax Legislation For Residents In Spain

n 31st January 2013, the Spanish Government published a new legislation for all Spanish residents. According to this new legislation, those individuals or companies residing in Spain who are owners of property or who have any other assets outside of Spain with a total value of 50,000€ or more are now required by Law to declare them with the Spanish Tax Authorities. This declaration can be done on line, via the “Agencia Tributaria” web page, by completing the form number 720, (Declaration of Assets Outside of Spain). This should be done between 1st February 2013 and 30th April 2013 to avoid being subject to investigation or steep fines from the Spanish Tax Authorities. The assets outside of Spain which are liable to this new tax come under 3 categories: 1. Real Estate Property 2. All accounts, investments, bank deposits, and financial companies. 3. Rights shares, rents, insurances, bonuses, or dividends acquired or managed outside of Spain The value of 50,000€ is the total for each category; i.e. 2 properties valued at 30,000€, individually would be below the threshold, but together exceed the limit and would therefore be subject to this new declaration, necessitating the completion of the form 720. The tax declaration is done individually for the property/ies, regardless of the number of owners, and the percentage of ownership is established later. We strongly recommend that you comply with this new legislation to avoid the large fines which are a minimum of 10,000€ to a maximum of 150% of the value of the undeclared assets outside of Spain. As the form 720 is purely an informative declaration no payment is required to the tax office. Our fee for advising, and assisting with this tax, is just 100€. This fee includes advice, preparation, and submission of the form 720 to the Spanish Tax Offices. Please do not hesitate to contact us for guidance in this matter. Nueva Legislación en Materia de Impuestos para los Residentes en España

l 31 de enero de 2013, el gobierno español publicó una nueva legislación para todos aquellos residentes en España. De acuerdo con la nueva normativa, todos aquellas personas físicas o jurídicas residentes en España propietarios de viviendas u otro tipo de bienes fuera de España cuyo valor sea de 50.000€ o más, tienen obligación de hacer esta declaración ante las autoridades españolas. Esta declaración puede ser realizada de forma on line, a través de la web de la Agencia Tributaria cumplimentado el Modelo 720 (Declaración de Bienes fuera de España). Esta declaración debe ser presentada entre el 1 de Enero de 2013 y el 30 de abril del mismo año, para así evitar ser investigado o multado por las Autoridades españolas. Los bienes fuera de España que están sujetos a esta nueva declaración están comprendidos en 3 categorías: 1. Bienes Inmuebles. 2. Todo tipo de cuentas, inversiones, depósitos bancarios y empresas. 3. Acciones, rentas, seguros, bonos o dividendos adquiridos o gestionados fuera de España. El valor total debe de ser 50.000€ en cada una de la categorías; es decir si tenemos 2 propiedades valoradas en

30.000€ y la valorásemos de forma individualizada cada una de ellas, estarían por debajo del umbral, pero si sumando el valor de ambas excedieran este límite, estarían sujetas a esta nueva declaración, necesitando cumplimentar el Modelo 720. La declaración debe ser realizada individualmente por el propietario/s, sin tener en cuenta el número de ellos, y el porcentaje de participación, el cuál se establecerá más tarde. Recomendamos que cumpla con esta nueva legislación para

evitar la imposición de multas con un importe mínimo de 10.000€ y un máximo del 150% del valor no declarado de aquellos bienes situados fuera de España. El Modelo 720 es meramente una declaración informativa no sujeta a ningún tipo de tributación. Por favor, no dude en ponerse en contacto con nosotros y así poderle guiar en esta materia. David Hewitt completes London Marathon for Bobby Moore Cancer Research Fund

A new charitable Association called “The Duquesa Charitable Association of St George” is in the process of being set up. This will be run by a committee, drawn from members of the local community, together with other supporters. Background Until recently, there were two childrens’ homes in San Roque, one looking after displaced Moroccan children and the other for local children. This was run as a charitable foundation under the name of Casa Abril but largely funded by grants from the Junta de Andalucía. This Foundation has now gone into liquidation. The closing accounts are being prepared, and the children have been re-housed elsewhere. Money donated by people in Sabinillas at Christmas was spent on the children, and Bishops Move are providing free storage for donated larger gifts, such as domestic electrical goods until such time as the charity can accommodate them.

The formalities of registration for the charity will be completed shortly. Charity Beneficiaries At this early stage of the new association, the focus of charitable donations is to be the funding of an eye consultation and later operation for a young boy called Ahmed who was previously living at one of the aforementioned homes that was for Moroccan children. It has been agreed that the consultation will take place at Moorefield’s Hospital in London. A wealthy benefactor whose company has a charitable fund, who prefers not to be named officially at this time, is supporting part of this funding, but charitable donations and events will also be required. Other worthy causes will be identified as the charity proceeds. It has been determined that all such causes will be ideally local to the area of Manilva, although other areas will be considered. Selected causes may relate to needy individuals or families,

children, and possibly the setting up of scholarships. Alternatively, if funding permits, it could even involve the setting up of a childrens’ home. Funding The possibility of setting up a Charity shop in Sabinillas is under discussion. Sabinillas Street Party The Sabinillas Street Party will be held in the Plaza de las Naranjas in Sabinillas on Saturday May 25. Starting at 1 pm there will be live music, kids' entertainment including a fancy dress competition. There will be also a number of stalls selling a variety of items including cakes, clothes, jewellery, cards, books, etc. There will be a fancy dress competition judged by Karen Langridge from La Boutique, Jane Macia from Graingers and Cindy Shelton. There will also be a great line up of musicians providing the entertainment during the party including: Daniella, Mitch Jansen, Clive Live, Gary Fearon, Phil

David Hewitt from Hewitt & Hewitt Graphic Design in Manilva has been at it again. He has been raising money for his beloved charity the Bobby Moore Cancer Research Fund. David’s latest venture was completing the London Marathon and raising over £2,200 (around 2,500 euros). Según Muñoz, se trata de marcar los objetivos y estructurar unas directrices y pautas para que todos los ciudadanos se sientan seguros, atendidos y vean en las fuerzas de seguridad, Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional y Local, bomberos y Protección Civil como un servicio ágil y dotado de buenos profesionales. En esta reunión, la primera edil manilveña ha querido hacer hincapié en lo relacionado con la basura, cumplir los horarios establecidos para depositarla y reciclar. También importante para un municipio limpio y con buena imagen

es lo relacionado con los animales, donde estará totalmente prohibido que estén en la playa y que los dueños sean responsables a la hora del paseo y recoger los excrementos. También de importancia será la cartelería que no esté en regla. Todos los asuntos tratados tendrán una sanción ejemplar en el caso de que el ciudadano no sea consecuente con sus obligaciones. Como es habitual en el término municipal de Manilva, la población se triplica en época estival, por lo tanto, se necesitan aunar esfuerzos para ofrecer buenos servicios y que la seguridad impere. Además de resolver cualquier incidente, también se tendrá en cuenta la limpieza y el decoro de un municipio eminentemente turístico.

Harley Jae It is with much sadness that we have to announce the death of young Harley Jae aged 7, who passed away peacefully on Friday 22nd February at 6 pm with his loved ones by his side at Naomi House. Harley Jae suffered from a rare undiagnosed condition which included Severe Uncontrolled Epilepsy, Global Developmental Delay and Learning Difficulties. His grandmother Teresa Blanchard would like to thank the people of Duquesa who “made such a difference with the fundraising for Harley’s trust. Harley bought so much love into his short but wonderful life and my life will never be the same without him but I know he is now at peace, free from pain and a very special bright start shining down on all that loved him”.

New Secondhand Market on Saturdays in San Roque The Campo de Gibraltar will soon have a new second hand market thanks to the Association of Ambulantes Artesanos Campo de Gibraltar "San Jose" and the town hall of San Roque. The initiative will take place every Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm in the area of El Ejido in the fairgrounds where the Sunday market is also held. The town hall has commented that "this market is not competing with the Sunday market, they are entirely different, because on Saturday stalls will be selling second hand items such as clothes, books, furniture, etc. and will enable many people in need to get some extra income by selling second-hand goods. Most, if not all of us here, will remember him not only for his football career but for

his massive personality and positively memorable charisma having lived in Manilva for several years before his return to the UK in the last couple of years in part due to his ill health. Age Concern had a very successful time at The Foreign Residents Day held in the Palacio de Congresos on Sunday 14th April. Two stands were run – a tombola and a clothes rail. Both were popular and all of the money raised will go to support the volunteers who work with older people in the community. Age Concern is a charity whose aim is to support older people and help them remain full members of society. People do not like

thinking or talking about getting older and the problems they may face, but it comes to everyone and having volunteers who can provide advice, information and help directly to individuals is a vital service. Estepona Floral Art Club

stepona Floral Art Club will be holding a flower arranging demonstration on 21st May from 3.30pm to 5pm at Tikitano’s Beach and Restaurant, Estepona. The demonstration will be given by David Thomson, NAFAS National Demonstrator from Chelmsford, Essex. David is an exceptional demonstrator who last visited the Club two years ago. He will not only share his beautiful designs with the audience but also hints and tips on flower care and arranging. If the audience is lucky he may also share his stories of flowers and celebrities! Samaritans in Spain Samaritans in Spain have been operating now since July 2008, opening their telephone lines every day to provide a free, completely confidential, English language support service for people of any age experiencing emotional problems of any type or intensity.

Samaritans is comprised entirely of un-paid volunteers, with all of those offering the listening service extensively trained and supported as they “stand alongside” people through their suffering. They will listen regardless of how big or small the issue, and regardless of what the caller has or has not done. They listen without judging or telling people what they should or shouldn‟t do. Samaritans is not aligned to any other organisation, social, religious or political. This assists neutrality, allowing callers to explore their situation their way. La Policía Nacional ha recomendado en varias ocasiones la instalación de aplicaciones y programas gratuitos muy sencillos de configurar, que permiten la recuperación de móviles de alta gama o tabletas o el borrado de su contenido. Una de estas apps ha sido en esta ocasión de gran utilidad para localizar y detener a los autores de estos robos.

After their stunning success last autumn, May 10th. will see the return of the wonderful Calendar Girls to the Salon Varietes in Fuengirola. It certainly doesn’t seem that six months have passed since their last performance, after which, the girls were asking could they repeat this at the end of the season, so here they are. They had to make a couple of small changes due to work commitments but the team are back and ready to go. In fact two cast members have flown in from the UK (one from Manchester and the other from Leeds) just to be part of this production. Salon Varietes are pleased to say their calendar actually sold over seven hundred copies and they have just twenty-five left which will go on sale on May 10th, the opening night of this production. The Barracudas at Louie Louie's Fans of live music are in for a treat later this month when The Barracudas, appear live in concert at Louie Louie's Rock'n'Roll Bar on Thursday May 30 from 9.30 pm. The Barracudas formed in London back in the 1970's drawing on both British and Canadian members were one of the most influential bands on the rock and roll/garage scene in the seventies and are notable for their summer 1980 hit single "Summer Fun", which started with an excerpt from a spoof 1960s advertisement for the Plymouth Barracuda and included dialogue of announcers having difficulty pronouncing the word barracuda. Despite splitting up and reforming a number of times over the years, the band has still found time to put out some twenty albums and a number of singles. anos repletas de trigo, granos que se convierten en pan, manos que son templo y cobijan manojos de esparto, naranjos y caricias, amores, guijarros. Unidad del sol. Manos como un huerto labrado que necesita el barbecho. Juglar de los sembrados, labrador indómito, la tierra te ofreció su polen y su arroyo, su fruto y su templanza; tú, labrador inquieto, le ofreciste su canto y su poema, en la noche callada, de música de tierra, allí en la era el abuelo cuenta una fábula: la seguiriya verde del trébol. Tiene la noche una caracola de mar superpuesta, llena de agua y vida, de agricultura azul, de rocío y de susurro, de estrella sin horizonte, ella es concha sin requiebro que ha pasado por el río y los campos. La hija del labrador, esmerada en seguir el sueño

de la luna quiere penetrar en el huerto, donde se columpia velando el sembrado. Todos están dormidos, esposa, abuela, hijos, menos el joven labrador. No puede dormir pensando en la cosecha: “¿Será tan buena como la del año pasado?” Su esposa se despierta. “Pero qué inquieto eres, descansa, que mañana será otro día”. “Sabes que nos queda poco para poder tener nuestro propia vega”. Pero ella siente miedo. “Y si eso de tener nuestra propia tierra es algo que solo hemos soñado”. La luz del alba lo despierta. Toma café con leche y una rebanada de pan untando con aceite. El pan moreno amasado el día anterior es más sabroso si cabe, más entero, que el pan recién hecho. “Lo que queda es poca azúcar, será mejor dejarla para los niños”. Pero este pan, hoy salva de miserias al campesino. Ya el sol está a punto de corregir

a la mala hierba mojada de rocío. La luna se ha marchado para su cuenca de cielo, y el campesino mira la belleza del trigo sobre los campos. Se mira las manos, y en ellas un pan aparece, migaja de sol, sus callos han sanado; otro día para seguir laboreando, cumpliendo su ciclo, agricultor rebelde contra la explotación y la injusticia de algunos terratenientes. Pan moreno que los hijos y la madre ahora comen, energía encerrada en el salvado, molido en el antiguo molino de los señoritos. Los niños van a la escuela arcaica, limpia, severa y planetaria; pan cocido en el viejo horno. Pan moreno. a noche sabe hablar, sonora lengua de los astros, y quieren mis amigos oír conmigo el vals de las lechuzas, un murciélago que pasa volando para encararse con el viento logra alcanzar los insectos que pululan bajo la higuera. Estoy ronco de peregrinar junto al níspero, de cantar y dejar migajas de voz allí para los pájaros. El llanto también es verdad, el negro de la luna, pero una pasión recorre las huertas buscando grillos comprometidos a la armonía del cielo. Hablemos, amigos, una conversación y otra, y nunca dialoguemos llenándonos de sombras los pensamientos, dialoguemos en esta noche de paz y corola, de llanura y dominó sin números, fullero que se advierte; ya sé, es

más divertido robar fichas o colocarlas en trampas mientras se ve al compañero distraído, pero eso es una falta leve y no terminará en la ridiculez y el menosprecio. Prometo no hacerlo más, no sé si hoy seré capaz. Hablemos, callemos, juguemos, cocinemos. Vayamos a pasear, trabajemos juntos, labremos ese huerto para criar razones de vegetal y hombre, sigamos haciendo todo eso, y más, continuemos alegrándonos juntos, vivamos en un mundo de un feudo en interregno, paréntesis de nuestra sangre gobernando su corazón, arqueología varada que se dispone a los hallazgos del hombre que, fiel, sostiene lo más válido, la humilde arquitectura trazada por los amigos, capaces de amarse de verdad, de respetarse siempre. By El Intercambio's Grande Gordo Papa Making a great name for itself as a music venue El Molino has slowly but surely been putting Sabinillas on the musical map. Having hosted The Silver Beats, amongst other bands. Full house and first on stage much to my surprise Frank Skott singing a mix of his

own brilliant music with songs like ‘For Miles’ and soul classics including some of my favorite tunes. A great set and thoroughly appreciated by the crowd. For me, although his cover versions were great, it was his original material that really shone through particularly the classic ‘Under The Street Light’ and the first track performed. Consummate professional, the crowd had already had

their full money’s worth by the time he had finished. Following on was James Richard, good vocally and a great performer singing through classics, dancing, getting the crowd involved and jumping on tables to-boot overall putting on quite a show.! Switching to his real talent, the saxophone, he went on to blow a few of my favorites including Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White before back into the entetainmenrt showcase of fun . Looking every bit the part, Daniel Boland, in the sharpest of sharp suits took to the stage with as much performance finesse as his predecessor. Singing Michael Buble to a tee and getting down dancing with the crowd, the entertainment factor made an otherwise good singer into a great performer. Finishing the set, Danielle, taking the night through favourites and getting even more people up and dancing another successful night had been organized by live music Spain. 15 Euros for four acts and a meal is the kind of recession busting value needed at a time like this and as such full respect goes out to the venue El Molino supporting local talent, original as well as cover, and to Live Music Spain for its continual promotions and reasonably priced events.

A couple of years ago a couple of like minded music lovers set up an organisation called El Intercambio with the aim of promoting local music and musicians and providing a hub from which to draw together all those involved in local music including venues, record labels, studios, promoters and of course listeners. With this idea in mind they decided to put together a radio show with the aim of showcasing some of the bands and artists in the South of Spain that have had audiences buzzing in that time. These shows which are available online, draw on a wide range of genres from rock to reggae, blues, country, hip hop and house, and to listen to these shows you can go to www.elintercambio.org where you can stream or download the programmes. Esteponero Miguel Pino se proclama campeón de Andalucía de Motonáutica El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa de que el deportista local Miguel Pino Palomo se proclamó el pasado fin de semana campeón de Andalucía de Motonáutica en la categoría jet ski f1. El piloto de motos de agua, que compitió representando a Estepona como Ciudad Europea del Deporte 2013, consiguió también un tercer puesto en la categoría jet ski f3. Participaron 76 pilotos en la competición, algunos de los cuales ostentan los primeros

puestos de la clasificación mundial. Las siguientes citas de Miguel Pino Palomo serán en Sevilla, Guadalmedina (Jaén) y Cádiz para disputar distintas pruebas del Campeonato de Andalucía. Asimismo, en su programación de la temporada tiene señaladas las más importantes competiciones del calendario de eventos nacionales de la Real Federación Española de Motonáutica, en destinos como Barcelona, Murcia o Gandía.

Fútbol 7 en Manilva

Una liga donde se concentran cientos de deportistas y aficionados. Una competición entre doce equipos del municipio que cada fin de semana disfrutan del fútbol y hacen deporte. La delegación de Deportes propone una liga muy competitiva y que cada año va mejorando su nivel. También la copa y torneos internacionales. Mario Jiménez, concejal delegado de Deportes no solo quiere destacar la numerosa participación de vecinos sino el espíritu deportivo y competitivo que hace de esta liga un referente en la Costa. A mediados de mayo finalizará la liga regular y dará comienzo la Copa. A través de sorteo, los equipos participantes tendrán otra reválida para demostrar su competitividad y volver a competir por conseguir un trofeo que también resume quien es el mejor en el torneo del k.o.

Miguel Pino of Estepona proclaimed Andalucian Jet Ski Champion A local athlete from Estepona, Miguel Pino Palomo, has been proclaimed the Andalucian Jet Ski Champion in the f1 jet ski category. The rider, who represented Estepona as the European City of Sport 2013, also won third place in the f3 jet ski category. 76 competitors participated, some of wom hold the top world rankings.

Miguel Pino Palomo’s next events will be in Seville, Guadalmedina (Jaén) and Cadiz to take part in various Andalucian Championship events. He has also marked off the most important competitions of the national event calendar of the Real Federación Española de Motonáutica, in destinations like Barcelona, Murcia and Gandia.

Manilva’s local 7-a-side football league sees 12 teams competing weekly in what has become a popular sporting fixture for both players and fans alike. The league offers a highly competitive competition which is improving year on year with cup and international tournaments also part of the calendar. Councillor for Sport, Mario Jimenez, would like to highlight the large participation and competitive spirit which makes this league a landmark on the Coast. In mid-May, to coincide with the conclusion of the league there will be Tournament in which the teams compete for the top accolades.

Más de 700 deportistas han participado hoy en la 'I Carrera Urbana 10 Kilómetros de Estepona, Trofeo Xtreme Mediterráneo', que ha sido organizada por el Ayuntamiento de Estepona y el Club de Atletismo Estepona.Esta actividad, que está incluida en el programa de actos confeccionado con motivo de la elección de Estepona como Ciudad Europea del Deporte 2013, ha tenido lugar en las principales avenidas de la localidad y por las calles remodeladas del casco histórico. En la prueba han participado atletas como el esteponero Miguel de los Santos, olímpico en Atlanta 1996 y Javier Díaz Carretero, campeón de Andalucía de campo a través en 2012, bronce en el campeonato de España de media maratón en 2013 y bronce en el campeonato de España de maratón en 2013.

Francisco Javier Guerrero se proclama Campeón de Andalucía de squash por equipos Francisco Javier Guerrero se proclama Campeón de Andalucía de squash por equipos, formando parte del equipo de Fuengirola. El pasado 6 y 7 de abril, se disputó en el Club Sato Sport de Sevilla, el campeonato de Andalucía de Squash por equipos. El vencedor fue el equipo de Fuengirola. Hasta aquí todo muy normal. El equipo de Fuengirola partía como gran favorito para ganar el campeonato, y revalidar así el título que consiguiera en año pasado. Pero varias circunstancias hicieron muy peculiar este campeonato. La primera, era que este año el equipo de Fuengirola incorporaba en sus filas a Francisco Javier Guerrero, jugador de nuestra localidad, perteneciente al Maniac Squash Manilva-Estepona. Pero la circunstancia que realmente aconteció y que pudo cambiar el rumbo del campeonato fue la lesión del Número uno del equipo de Fuengirola, Neill McCarrow.

La Lesión de Neill, provocó que el abanico de posibilidades de equipos que optaban al título se abriese en gran medida. Y provocó, que fuese decisivo para Fuengirola, la incorporación de nuestro vecino Francisco Javier en su equipo. Neill no pudo ganar ninguno de sus partidos, todos los partidos que este jugador, número uno del ranking, disputó y que en un principio todos daban por ganado, los perdió. Convirtiendo en decisivo para pasar eliminatorias todos los partidos de Francisco Javier Guerrero. Ya que era este jugador el que jugaba el último y decisivo partido de todas las eliminatorias. El resultado final del campeonato, Ganador Equipo de Club Squash Fuengirola, compuesto por Neill McCarrow, Marcus Hall, Francisco Javier Guerrero, Francisco Domínguez y Pedro Ríos. Segundo Club Abarles de Granada, con Francis Molina, Enrique Guerrero, Javier Martín y Eduardo García.

Francisco Javier Guerrero proclaimed Andalucian Team Squash Champion Francisco Javier Guerrero is proclaimed Team Squash Champion of Andalucía, as part of the Fuengirola team. On 6 and 7 April, the Club Sato Sport in Sevilla played host to the Team Squash Championship of Andalucia. The winners were the team from Fuengirola, although it was not an uneventful day for the champions. The Fuengirola team began as the favorite to win the championship and defend the title they won last year. But several peculiar circumstances made this a nail biting champion-

ship. First of all this year’s Fuengirola team included Francisco Javier Guerrero, from our municipality, a member of Estepona-Manilva Maniac Squash. But what could really have changed the course of the championship was an injury sustained by Fuengirola’s number one player, Neill McCarrow. Neill’s injury opened up a range of possibilities for teams vying for the title. At this point the pressure really came down on Francisco Javier Guerrero. Neill failed to win any of his matches, although the number one player initially expect-

ed to easily overcome all of his opponents. This meant that it was all up to Francisco Javier Guerrero, since he played the final and deciding game of all the qualifiers. The final result was another win for the Fuengirola Squash Club Team, with members Neill McCarrow, Marcus Hall, Francisco Javier Guerrero, Francisco Dominguez and Pedro Rios. . Club Abarles from Granada came second, with Francis Molina, Enrique Guerrero, Javier Martin and Eduardo Garcia.

50-5. Fue seguido por una convincente victoria sobre CAU Valencia. El segundo día siguieron con más de lo mismo, venciendo al equipo vasco Henani 38-0, este triunfo los puso directamente en la final ante el CRC Canoe de Madrid. La final fue más indeciso, con el resultado aún a 0-0 al llegar al descanso. En la segunda mitad del partido, la interacción dinámica proporcionó a los jugadores de Marbella más espacio en el que correr. Tanto Pedro de la Lastra y Christian King marcaron llevando a Marbella a ganar 12-3. Facundo Munilla de Marbella fue nombrado el mejor jugador del torneo después de su magnífica exhibición durante la apertura. Fue un partido emocionante para los jugadores ya que marcó la última vez que jugarán todos juntos ya que algunos se van a la universidad o van a regresar al Reino Unido o Argentina. Este año han sido galardonados con el prestigioso equipo masculino del año por el Ayuntamiento de Marbella después de un fantástico año.

Marbella to host National U16 championships Marbella Rugby club will host the national U16 rugby championships on the 18th and 19th of May. The event will be held at the San Pedro sports grounds by the Rio Guadaiza. Two tournaments will run in parallel, an open and closed tournament. The closed tournament will be disputed by the 8 best teams in the country, each of which will be the champion of their region. Marbella will represent Andalucia and have expectations to do well. However, they will have to be on top form to win this competition. CAU Valencia who have won this title for the last two years will again start as keen favourites. At the same time 21 other teams will compete in the open tournament. This is open to any U16 spanish team that wishes to partake.

Marbella U18 sign off in style The young players from Spain recently travelled to Holland to take part in the European Cross Border U17 championship. The competition was played in The Hague with teams from Switzerland, Holland, Czech Republic and of course Spain. The first round matches were very one sided with Spain beating Switzerland 104-0. Holland continued in similar form by beating Czech Republic 94-0. The final was expected to be a much closer game and many believed that the strong Dutch team

would prevail. The game was very tight however the larger more powerful forwards from Spain started to breakdown the solid Dutch defence and help the Spanish youngsters win 22-14. Marbella Rugby club again provided two players, Christian King and Ryan Jones. Ryan a powerful second row scored the opening try in the first match to set the tone. Christian scored the important try in the final to put the Spanish team in the lead.

Los jóvenes jugadores de España recientemente viajaron hasta Holanda para participar en el Campeonato Cross Borders de Europa. La competición se disputó en La Haya con equipos de Suiza, Holanda, República Checa y por supuesto España. Durante el partido de la primera ronda España dominó el juego derrotando a Suiza 104-0. Holanda les siguió de forma similar superando a la República Checa 94-0. Se esperaba un partido final mucho más justo y muchos creyeron que el fuerte equipo holandés prevalecería. El partido fue sin embargo muy apretado, los más grandes y más potentes delanteros del equipo Español comenzaron la ruptura de la sólida defensa holandesa, lo que ayudó a los jóvenes españoles a llegar a la victoria 22-14. Marbella RC proporcionaron de nuevo dos jugadores, Christian King y Ryan Jones. Ryan una poderosa segunda fila inauguró el marcador en el primer partido estableciendo el tono. Christian anotó la marca decisiva durante la final alzando al equipo español a la cabeza.

Marbella U18 defended their national title in Torrevieja. The current champions started the tournament as hot favourites as they had won this title for the last two years and had not lost a domestic match for almost 4 years. On the opening day of the tournament, they beat the Torros from Mallorca 50-5. This was followed up by a convincing win over CAU Valencia. The second day saw them carry on in the same form, beating the Basque team Henani 38-0, this victory put them straight into the final against CRC

The standard of Rugby will be high and the event should be exciting. Entrance is free with a bar facilities on site with the chance to win some great prizes in the raffle.

Canoe of Madrid. The final was closer than some thought, with the half time score 0-0. In the second half, the dynamic interplay provided the Marbella players with more space to run. Pedro de la Lastra and Christian King both scoring as Marbella won 12-3. Facundo Munilla from Marbella, was named the player of the tournament after his superb display at fly half. It was an emotional match for the boys as it marked the last time that they will play together as some will go to university or return to the UK or Argentina. This year they have been awarded the prestigious men's team of the year by the Marbella Ayuntamiento after a fantastic year.

El evento tendrá lugar en el recinto deportivo de San Pedro al lado del Río Guadaiza. Se desarrollarán dos torneos de forma paralela, un torneo abierto y uno cerrado. El torneo cerrado será disputada por los 8 mejores equipos del país, cada uno de los cuales será el campeón de su región. Marbella representará a Andalucía y tienen expectativas de salir adelante. Sin embargo, tendrán que estar en plena forma para ganar esta competición. CAU Valencia, ganadores de este título durante los dos últimos años volverán a comenzar como los favoritos a ganar. Al mismo tiempo, otros 21 equipos competirán en el torneo abierto. Está abierto a cualquier equipo español Sub 16 que quiera participar. 8 medallas para los tiradores del Club Internacional “AndaluZía” de Estepona en el Criterium Andaluz de Esgrima

El pasado mes ha tenido lugar el criterium de esgrima para menores de 10 y 12 años en el Polideportivo de la Cala de Mijas de Málaga. 15 tiradores del Club “AndaluZía” tomaron parte en esta competición siendo el Club que más deportistas aportó a la competición y que más premios obtuvo. En la categoría femenina de menores de 12 años Emily Wellington se alzó con la medalla de bronce muy meritoria y trabajada. En categoría masculina de menores de 10 años consiguió medalla de plata Jacob Posner y medalla de oro Eduardo Draganinsky, Nathan Kilkenny y Cosse Appel. En el grupo de niñas de menores de 10 años Kimberly Kleinot obtuvo la medalla de plata y medalla de oro Mª Medina y Amelia Deardon en su

Whilst the U18 were being crowned the champions of Spain, the U16 players were challenging Puerto Santa Maria for the Andalucian title. This was a hugely important match as the winners would then have the right to enter the U16 national championships which will be held in Marbella on the 18th and 19th of May. Marbella made the journey to the beautiful region of Puerto de Santa Maria, Cadiz to play the winners of the Sevilla league with

both teams keen to take the spoils and earn the right to represent Andalucia in the national tournament. Again, the match was a tense affair, with Marbella sneaking an 11-0 halftime lead. After the break, Alexander ‘Chuqi’ Cruz ran in an 80m interception to try to put Marbella ahead. It provided the impetus they needed to start running the ball with confidence. They closed the game 33-0 victors and Champions of Andalucia.

la Copa de Andalucía de esgrima para menores de 20 años y categoría absoluta con muy buen resultado para Manuel Vidal en representación del club realizando cuatro victorias consecutivas en su poule de clasificación en su segunda actuación en el circuito andaluz. Estos resultados no hubieran sido posibles sin el arduo trabajo de sus monitores H. Chacón, M. Vidal, R. Vindel, Alejandra y M. López que en todo momento estuvieron apoyando a los jóvenes deportistas. 8 medals for International Fencing Club of Estepona ‘AndaluZia’ at the Andalucia Criterium This past month the fencing criterium for children under 10 and 12 years old took place in the Sports Center in la Cala de Mijas, Málaga. 15 members from the “Andaluzia” club took part, making them the largest number of athletes from the same club in the competition and they also won the most medals. In the girls under 12 category Emily Wellington won the bronze medal. In the boys under 10 category Jacob Posner won the silver medal while the gold medal was won by Eduardo Draganinsky, Nathan Kilkenny and Cosse Appel. In the category of girls

under 10 Kimberly Kleinot won the silver and the gold medalists were Maria Medina and Amelia Deardon in her first competition. They are all eagerly preparing to participate in the forthcoming Championship of Spain in Madrid on June 15. These results would not have been possible without the hard work of their instructors H. Primera misión de los 'Tigre' en Afganistán Han proporcionado seguridad al tercer convoy de repliegue Han proporcionado seguridad al tercer convoy de repliegue Los helicópteros de ataque ‘Tigre’ realizaron este mes su primera misión en Afganistán, en apoyo al tercer convoy de repliegue del contingente español a la base de Herat, a lo largo de la 'ruta Lapis’. El apoyo se ha desarrollado en tres fases. En la primera, los ‘Tigre’ han proporcionado escolta armada al helitransporte de la compañía ‘Task Force Azor 21’ desde la base ‘Ruy González de Clavijo’, en Qala-i-Naw, hasta las proximidades del paso de Sabzak, en la cordillera que separa las provincias de Herat y de Badghis. Los helicópteros realizaron, también, el reconocimiento aéreo del itinerario. La misión de los efectivos de la compañía ‘TF Azor 21’ consistió en impedir que el convoy pudiera ser hostigado en una zona donde habitualmente actúa la insurgencia.

La segunda fase, iniciada una vez afianzada la posición de despliegue de la ‘TF Azor 21’, ha consistido en la escolta aérea al convoy de repliegue en los tramos de mayor riesgo de hostigamiento desde Qala-iNaw al paso de Sabzak. El apoyo de los helicópteros ‘Tigre’ finalizó cuando el convoy terrestre rebasó la zona asegurada por la compañía ‘TF Azor 21’. En esta última fase, los helicópteros de ataque prestaron escolta al vuelo de regreso de la compañía a su base de origen en Qala-i-Naw. Este es el tercer convoy de repliegue entre Qala-i-Naw y Herat del contingente español ASPFOR XXXII. El transporte ha incluido vehículos tácticos ‘Lince’, que pertenecían a unidades ya desactivadas en el puesto de combate avanzado (COP) de Moqur, cerrado el pasado 9 de marzo. Además, se han transportado 13 contenedores

con repuestos, tiendas y equipos individuales de la Unidad de protección y seguridad desactivada. El convoy concluyó sin que fuera necesaria la intervención de los helicópteros, armados contra objetivos en superficie. Esta primera misión de los helicópteros de ataque 'Tigre' ha constituido un hito importante no solo en el desarrollo de las operaciones que los militares españoles llevan a cabo en Afganistán, sino también en la participación en operaciones de los helicópteros de las Fuerzas Aeromóviles de Ejército de Tierra (FAMET).

n las playas de la provincia de Málaga, en restaurantes o chiringuitos de la costa a pie de playa, sirven los espetos de sardinas. Consisten en Sardinas asadas, que se hacen al calor de las brasas, las cuales van ensartadas en cañas de 20/30 ctms. de largo, son una delicia que literalmente te harán chupar los dedos. Es un “arte” que se transmite de Preparación: Primer paso: se preparan las cañas y se recoge buena leña, padres a hijos desde tiempos inmemoriales, y son los “marengos” los únicos que saben practicarlo....La gente del mar ha llamado a este método “amoragar”, palabra que deriva de moraga, y ésta del término árabe “múhraqa” (quemar), también se espetan otros pescados, como los jureles, brecas, etc. Reconocido como el ‘padre’ de los espeteros, Manuel Aragón es el maestro, un Esteponero querido, admirado y gran amigo, en esta foto lo vemos tallando una caña Segundo paso: se compran unas buenas sardinas y así sin quitarles cabeza, ni tripas ni escamas, se limpian, se salan y se ensartan en las cañas. Se trata de ensartar las sardinas por el estómago y por un lateral concreto de la espina, con una

caña (a ser posible aún verde) previamente preparada como una lanza. Para comerlas en su punto, el dicho popular dice “las sardinas, de Virgen a Virgen”, se refiere a las fechas entre la Virgen del Carmen (16 de julio) y de la Victoria (8 de septiembre), patrona de Málaga, mientras que otros afirman que la mejor época son los meses de verano, junio, julio y agosto. Tercer paso: se clavan en la arena y se asan. Parece sencillo pero tiene sus trucos, hay que saber donde colocar el espeto, para que el fuego no les ataque de forma directa y el humo “las jumee”, los espetos hay que colocarlos sobre “un camellón de arena” contra el fuego para que éste las vaya asando de forma indirecta. En los chiringuitos los preparan en una barca especial. La Moraga en la playa con el fantástico crepitar de las brazas, el color de las llamas, el aroma de las sardinas asadas, los amigos y el paisaje, conforman un momento único, es un placer que estimula todos los sentidos Cuarto paso: se comen con los dedos, el disfrute está garantizado.

n the beaches of the province of Malaga, in restaurants or bars along the coast, sardines are served. They are grilled, using hot coals, and are threaded on skewers 20/30 cms. in length and are quite literally finger lickin’ good. They are prepared in the following way: First step: prepare the canes or poles and collect good firewood. Second step: buy good sardines and without removing their heads, guts or scales they are cleaned and salted and threaded on the skewers, the aim being to spear them up through the stomach and out of a particular side of the spine, with a piece of cane (still green if possible) previously fashioned into a skewer. Third step: dig into the sand and cook, it seems simple but has its tricks, you have to know where to place the skewer so that the fire does not burn the fish, you have to place the skewers on a bed of sand so they are grilled indirectly. In the bars they often prepare a special boat. Fourth step: eat with your fingers, enjoyment is guaranteed.

This month’s article is about running A group of people aged 22-60 decided to run a half marathon, we had 10 days notice and no experience between us for distance running, this is not what I would recommend, but this group were very fit in general just not running fit. As a group we completed 22 kms in times varying from 2hrs 11 mins to 2hrs 38mins, but even though we were fit, we all suffered terribly for 4-5 days afterwards, proving that you can be fit for the sport or activity that you do. We all experienced sore hips and legs, some of us had blisters and chaffing but all of us felt tired, elated but tired. You don’t have to be an athlete -- or even aspire to be one -- to start running. Just look at Graham Cole. In January 2010, a month after he turned 60, Scott began running. Just 16 months later he finished the London Marathon (it took him six hours). Cole, a radio-talk show host, didn’t do much in the way of exercise before then. He played golf as often as he could but never found the time for regular workouts.He knew he wasn’t very fit and his waist line was expanding with his age- he approached me and started with the programme below. So, where do you start if you want to try running? Firstly invest in a decent pair of running shoes that support both your feet and ankles (this will avoid injuries in the long term) They don’t have to be mega expensive, but it will be the most important investment you’ll make. I suggest going to a store specializing in running gear, where the staff are knowledgeable about the products, and trying on as many pairs as necessary to find the right ones for you. A good fit is essential; blisters and shin splints are not going to inspire you to continue running. Then I would suggest the run /walk plan Determine a time or a distance and run for 1 min and walk for 7 mins (I suggest around 16 mins for your first attempt) kee repeating until your reach your goal time or distance. Start with the walk first, this should be brisk and not leisurely, pump your arms to maintain an elevated heart rate, this means you will maintain a good cardio-vascular workout. Aim to look 10-20 feet ahead, don’t stare at your feet, not only is this poor form but dangerous too, it is easy to fall or trip. On the run section, do just that, pick up your pace a run for one minute, use the 7 minutes to regain your breath and get ready to do it again. Always start with a 5 min walking warm up. Just check your form This means keep your toes pointing straight ahead, and try landing mid sole and not on your toes or heels, landing on your toes will make your calves very sore and can lead to pains in the shin (called shin splints) running where your heel strikes first means you have ‘over strided’, this like breaking, you will lose energy and it can lead to injuries. Keep your hands a waist level, keep your arms bent to 90 degree’s, and try to relax your hands, avoid clenching your fists, this can lead to aching shoulders. Keep your back up right and straight, avoid leaning forwards or backwards and try to relax your shoulders (rounded shoulders restricts your breathing and can make running more difficult, swing your arms forward and back from the shoulders and not just from the elbow. Running is free, it can be time effective, it gives you freedom and ‘brain space’, it can burn masses of calories as well as keeping your heart and lungs fit... El artículo de este mes trata sobre el correr Un grupo de personas de entre 22 y 60 años decidimos correr una media maratón, tuvimos 10 días de antelación y ninguna experiencia entre todos en carreras de resistencia, ésto no es lo que yo recomendaría, pero este grupo estaba muy en forma, en general, pero no en forma para correr. Como grupo completamos 22 kms en tiempos que varían entre 2 horas y 11 mins hasta 2 horas y 38 mins, pero a pesar de estar en buena forma, todos sufrieron terriblemente durante 4-5 días después, demostrando que puedes estar en forma para el deporte o actividad que hagas. Todos experimentamos dolores de piernas y cadera, algunos tuvimos ampollas y roces, pero todos nos sentimos cansados, eufóricos pero cansados. No tienes que ser un atleta - o incluso aspirar a ser uno - para empezar a correr.

Basta con mirar a Graham Cole. En enero de 2010, un mes después de cumplir los 60, Graham empezó a correr. Apenas 16 meses después terminó la Maratón de Londres (que tardó seis horas en completar). Cole, un presentador de radio, no hacía mucho ejercicio antes de eso. Jugaba al golf todo lo que podía, pero nunca encontró el tiempo para hacer ejercicio. Él sabía que no estaba en muy buena forma física y que su cintura se estaba expandiendo con su edad. Se acercó a mí y comenzó con el programa que viene a continuación. Los fumadores corren el riesgo de perder la visión Un oculista local está advirtiendo a los fumadores de los riesgos que el hábito supone para su visión. La degeneración macular asociada a la edad (DMAE) es la principal causa de pérdida grave de visión en personas mayores de 55 años en el mundo occidental. La DMAE es una enfermedad degenerativa de la retina que causa la pérdida progresiva de la visión central. La AMD afecta la mácula - la parte de la retina responsable de la visión clara necesaria para actividades diarias como leer o conducir *. Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud, han establecido que el único factor de riesgo modificable es fumar. Las personas que fuman tienen más del doble de riesgo de desarrollar AMD, algo que todavía no es muy conocido*. "La conciencia de la ceguera a causa de fumar es preocupantemente bajo", Amrik Sappal de Ópticas Specsavers en Fuengirola explica: "Cuando inhalas un cigarrillo, alrededor de 4.000 productos químicos, como nicotina, alquitrán, arsénico y amoniaco entran al flujo sanguíneo y viajan por todo el cuerpo. Muchos de ellos son tóxicos para los tejidos delicados del ojo, dañando la mácula y en última instancia conduciendo a la pérdida de visión”. Prevención del Tabaco (CNPT) y la Comisión para el Mercado de Tabacos estima que 600.000 personas españolas habían dejado de fumar y se estima que el consumo de tabaco en España se redujo en un 17% como consecuencia. Sr. Sappal dice: "Esta es una excelente noticia para la salud de la nación y su vista. Otros países que han adoptado la ley antitabaco han visto beneficios de salud muy positivos como resultado y se espera que esta tendencia continúe en España. En 2010, la BBC informó que el número de ingresos hospitalarios de emergencia para ataques cardíacos en Inglaterra ha caído desde que la ley antitabaco se introdujo hace tres años, resultando en un ahorro de casi £ 8,5 millones al año al sistema de salud nacional”. Smokers at risk from sight loss A local optician is warning smokers of the risks that the habit poses to their vision. Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss for people over the age of 55 in the western world. AMD is a degenerative retinal eye disease that causes progressive loss of central vision. AMD affects the macula – the part of the retina responsible for clear vision needed for daily activities such as reading or driving*. According to the World Health Organisation the only established modifiable risk factor is smoking. People who smoke more than double their risk of developing AMD yet this is not widely known*. ‘Awareness of blindness from smoking is worryingly low’, Amrik Sappal from Specsavers Opticas in Fuengirola explains; ‘When you inhale a cigarette, approximately 4,000 chemicals such as nicotine, tar, arsenic and ammonia enter your bloodstream and travel throughout your body. Many of these are poisonous to the delicate tissues of the

eye, damaging the macula and ultimately leading to loss of vision.’ Mr. Sappal warns: ‘As well as the early onset of AMD, smokers also have a higher likelihood of developing cataracts, a common cause of blindness and visual impairment. In addition, tobacco smoking can lead to damage of the optic nerve, causing further vision impairment.’ In January 2012, just a year after the smoking ban came into force in Spain, the National Committee for the Prevention of Tobacco (CNPT) and the Commission for the Tobacco Market estimated that 600,000 Spanish individuals had given up smoking and estimated that the consumption of tobacco in Spain fell by 17% as a result. Mr Sappal says: ‘This is excellent news for the nation’s health and eyesight. Other countries that have adopted the smoking ban have seen really positive health benefits as a result and it is hoped that this trend will continue in Spain. In 2010 the BBC reported that the number of emergency hospital admissions for heart attacks in England has fallen since the smoking ban was introduced three years ago, saving the NHS almost £8.5 million a year.’ Specsavers Opticas expects to see similar health benefits following the smoking ban in Spain and is encouraging smokers to take a positive step in safeguarding their eyesight by giving up. Alkaline Diets Last month I explained the benefits eating a more alkaline diet (have a look at www.theresident.eu). This month, we’re looking at which foods are acidic and which foods are alkaline. Understanding this doesn’t mean cutting out all acidic foods but rather, adjusting the ratio of alkaline to acidic. The ideal ratio is around 80:20. In practical terms, this means having a big salad with your fish or steak, instead of chips (which would be acid + acid) or swapping pasta with wild rice. Drinking a glass of water with freshly squeezed lemon juice can also help. With people spending ever more time on the internet, and using online services for many areas of daily life the threat of cyber crime and scams has never been so high. In response to this we are bombarded with advice as how to combat this, often leaving us worried and confused to the point where we over compensate in some areas whilst neglecting basic safeguards. Here are ten basic but crucial tips to help keep you safe online. If you adhere to these simple routines then you are well placed to keep ahead of the constant flow of new threats: 1. Regularly update your operating system and applications - especially Java, Adobe and Office products. 2. Use a modern browser and consider plug-ins that turn off scripts and other common ways to attack you while you’re online. Having an up-to-date browser matters far more than the type of browser you use - and there’s no real excuse for not updating when the installations are free. 3. Use different passwords for different areas of your life: one for email accounts, one for financial accounts, one for social media accounts and so on. This strikes the balance of being easier than having to remember dozens of different words, yet safer than using the same one for everything. Criminals often take advantage of the fact that people re-use passwords across the board, so don’t fall into that trap. 4. Watch your credit card and bank statements closely so you can spot if you’ve been targeted by a scam straight away. Vigilance away from your screen

is just as important if you are to pick up on breaches. 5. Use regularly updated anti-virus. 6. Use a software or hardware firewall. 7. Consider a ‘banking only’ device that you use solely for financial transactions; avoiding email, browsing and social networking. Not everyone will be able to have this luxury, but separating your banking from general activity that puts you at risk is well worth doing if possible. 8. Beware of short, odd tweets and Facebook messages - even from friends - that provide a link. Accounts get hacked constantly and spreading malware by spamming contact lists with an infected link is very common. Just recently, a malware campaign proliferated on Twitter as dangerous links masqueraded as Facebook URLs posted by friends. 9. Don’t think that you are immune just because you use a Mac or iOS device. Android’s open source platform sees it attract the most attention for its security risks, but Apple’s huge market share makes it an extremely profitable target for criminals and the company is constantly fighting to weed out rogue apps from its App Store. 10. Use encryption and create lots of backups for everything - as often and as much as you can stand. Finally always, ALWAYS remember – “If it sounds too good to be true, then it’s probably a scam”

Aquí vienen las flores y el clima más cálido, después de las lluvias también vamos a ver un aumento en el número de ectoparásitos - pulgas, garrapatas, moscas que pican, los mosquitos y sanguijuelas de lo que hemos visto en los últimos años. Ellos pueden ocasionar problemas por sí solo. Su mera presencia puede dar lugar a picores, irritaciones locales hasta reacciones alérgicas más graves debido a una mordedura o picadura. Ellos - pulgas y/o garrapatas - también pueden producir anemia en el caso de infestaciones masivas. Algunos de estos organismos también pueden transmitir otras enfermedades parasitarias, algunos de los cuales son difíciles, si no imposibles de curar. Saber qué hacer y por el establecimiento de medidas preventivas precoces pueden evitar problemas más graves más, antes que las cosas se agravan. Insectos y/o control de plagas es una batalla durante todo el año en este clima, que debiera ser tratado con conciencia. Para contener eficazmente las pulgas, varios métodos simultáneos puede ser necesario, tratar el medio ambiente, así
