A medida que se acerca el final de agosto, los residentes comenzamos a anticipar la primera semana de septiembre cuando la mayoría de los visitantes de verano guardan sus tumbonas, devuelven sus coches de alquiler y volvemos a poder aparcar, conseguir una mesa en nuestros restaurantes preferidos y, en general, ¡retomar nuestras calles! Aquí en Manilva hay un evento que juega el papel de gran final de la temporada de verano ¡La Vendimia! Junto con las zonas de Axarquía y los Montes de Málaga, Manilva es un importante centro para la producción de la uva moscatel que, cuando se seca en las laderas locales, produce las famosas ‘Pasas de Málaga’, así como una gama de vinos secos y dulces. Ha habido viñedos en Manilva desde el siglo XVI, pero la industria alcanzó su clímax en los siglos XVII y XVIII, siendo Manilva un importante productor de vinos y brandies. Por desgracia, se produjo un descenso en los viñedos de la zona durante el siglo XIX que culminó con la destrucción de las viñas por la epidemia de filoxera que afectó a los viñedos de toda Europa en la década de 1860. No fue hasta después de la Guerra Civil española que Manilva empezó a cultivar de nuevo la vid como una importante actividad económica centrada en la dulce uva Moscatel, que es ideal para el tipo de clima de Manilva, la situación y el suelo. Cada año, durante el primer fin de semana de septiembre, Manilva celebra su vendimia anual. El festival fue fundado en los años 60 y se ha convertido en una parte importante de la agenda local, atrayendo a visitantes de toda la región. www.theresident.eu As the end of August approaches, we residents begin to anticipate the first week in September when the majority of the Summer visitors pack up their deckchairs, return their hire cars and one again we can park, get a table at our favourite restaurants and generally take back our streets! Here in Manilva there is one event that provides a grand finale to the Summer season, and that is the Vendimia, or grape harvest festival! Along with the Axarquia and the Montes de Malaga areas, Manilva is an important centre for the production of the Moscatel grape which, when dried on the local hillsides, provides the world famous ‘Pasas de Malaga’, the Malaga raisin, as well as a range of wines from dry to the sweet ‘Malaga’ wine. There have been vineyards in Manilva since the 16th Century but the industry enjoyed its heyday during the 17th and 18th centuries when Manilva was a major producer of wines and brandies. Unfortunately the local vineyards saw a decline during the 19th century which culminated in the destruction of the vines by the Phylloxera epidemic which decimated vineyards throughout Europe in the 1860s. It wasn’t until after the Spanish Civil War that Manilva took up grape growing as an important economic activity centred on the sweet Moscatel grape which is ideally suited to Manilva’s climate, situation and soil type. Every year, on the first weekend in September, Manilva celebrates its annual grape harvest. This festival was founded in the early ‘60s and has become an important part of the local calendar, drawing in visitors from all across the region. El VI Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz de Casares The VI Festival Nueva Cine se celebra del 27 de septiembre al 5 de Andaluz de Casares will be held octubre from September 27 to October 5 Casares acoge del 27 de septiembre al 5 de octubre su VI Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz. Un espacio de difusión cinematográfica que premia las mejores producciones en largometrajes de ficción y documentales de realización andaluza,producidos en Andalucía o rodados en Andalucía. Para esta edición, cuya notoriedad va en aumento año a año, se han inscrito un total de 20 largometrajes de ficción y 40 documentales. El pasado 15 de julio finalizaba el plazo de presentación y ahora la organización visiona todos los trabajos para seleccionar las 5 películas y los 4 documentales que se proyectarán en el Centro Cultural Blas Infante de Casares entre el lunes 30 de septiembre y el viernes 4 de octubre. En esta sección participan largometrajes de ficción y documentales que hayan sido realizados o estrenados en 2018 o posterior y que cumplan al menos uno de los siguientes tres requisitos: cuya producción sea al menos en un 60% andaluza, o estar rodadas fundamentalmente en Andalucía o ser de dirección andaluza. Asimismo, la organización del Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz está envuelta actualmente en concretar el resto de la programación que también incluye un curso de formación cinematográfica impartido por profesionales de reconocido prestigio, muestras de cortometrajes, conferencias, charlas en institutos de la provincia, la entrega del Premio Cámara Oscura, y el aclamado Concurso de Cortos Exprés, en el que se ruedan en Casares cortos en 48 horas durante el fin de semana del 27 al 29 de septiembre. Para este Concurso de Cortos Exprés el plazo de inscripción está abierto hasta el mismo 27 de septiembre. El tema del cortometraje a concurso es libre, si bien los participantes deberán integrar en el guion un objeto que se les entregará al iniciar los rodajes. Todos los trabajos participantes se proyectarán en la semana del Festival. El jurado de esta edición entregará tres premios económicos a los tres cortometrajes mejores, que recibirán el Pajarraco de Plata del concurso y un premio económico de 1.000€, 750€ y 500€, respectivamente. Por su parte, el público premiará el corto que considere mejor con el Pajarraco del Plata; el premio del público no lleva asignación económica.

The jury will give prizes to the three best short films, which will receive the Silver Bird of the contest and a cash prize of € 1,000, € 750 and € 500, respectively. El callejón del Rey y la calle Mazmorrilla serán los escenarios del pasaje del Terror de Casares Casares celebra el próximo 30 de agosto una de las citas más esperadas del verano, su pasaje del terror. Un recorrido terrorífico que este año tendrá como tema las mazmorras de Casares y la leyenda del cruel rey árabe que da nombre al Callejón del Rey. Desde la Escuela Municipal de Teatro y el Ayuntamiento de Casares se prepara
el evento que este año tendrá un recorrido urbano con entrada por la calle Mazmorrillas y salida por el Callejón del Rey, con un gran número de actores locales y un sorprendente decorado. El Pasaje del terror nos traslada esta edición a la época árabe de Casares, cuando según nos cuenta la leyenda gobernaba un rey cruel que torturaba y asesinaba a todo aquel que no seguía sus órdenes: «Un viernes, 30 de agosto de 1570, varios de sus esclavos hartos de someterse a sus órdenes, conocer sus torturas y el asesinato de inocentes, deciden revelarse y prender fuego desde las mazmorras hasta la zona del castillo justo a la hora en que bajaba el rey. Esa noche murió mucha gente, se armó un caos tremendo, hubo personas ahorcadas, quemadas y torturadas por los sirvientes del rey. Nadie sobrevivió, ni siquiera el rey y su familiares. Desde entonces vagan muchas almas en pena por cada rincón de esas calles que conocemos como el callejón del Rey. Y este 30 de octubre de 2019 como aniversario de estos hechos nefastos nos adentraremos en lo que pasó aquella fatídica noche y los invocaremos para conocer mejor la verdad…” La cita tiene lugar el próximo 30 de agosto (viernes), a partir de las 21.00 horas. La organización prevé que asistan entre 150 y 200 personas al mismo, por lo que ya se preparan los pases que se podrán retirar la próxima semana, desde el lunes 26 de agosto, en la Casa Natal de Blas Infante.

This edition of the Passage of Terror brings us to the Moorish era of Casares, when legend tells us that a cruel king ruled who tortured and murdered anyone who did not follow his orders: «On Friday, August 30, 1570, several of his slaves
tired of submitting to his orders, knowing their torture and the murder of innocents, decide to rise up and set fire from the dungeons to the area of the castle just at the time when he was present. That night many people died, tremendous chaos reigned, there were people hanged, burned and tortured by the king's servants. No one survived, not even the king and his relatives. Since then many souls wander in pain in every corner of these streets that we know as the callejón del Rey. And this October 30, 2019, as the anniversary of these disastrous events, we will revisit what happened that fateful night and reveal the truth… ” The Passage of Terror takes place on Friday, August 30, starting at 9 pm. Casares pone a punto el polígono industrial Las obras del polígono industrial de Casares, que dieron comienzo a final del pasado mes de junio y que cuentan con un presupuesto total de 2.626.573€ están marchando a buen ritmo. Los trabajos se dividen en un total de seis lotes que comprenden alumbrado, señalización viaria, agua potable y telemandos de bomberos, saneamiento, instalaciones eléctricas y un último lote de vigilancia. Cada uno de estos lotes ha sido adjudicado a diferentes contratas. Con respecto a las instalaciones eléctricas, se está tramitando con Endesa el suministro, ya que se trata de la acometida exterior que supone traer las líneas hasta el polígono para que le den luz. En cuanto
al lote que comprende el saneamiento, es el único que falta por comenzar. Si bien el importe global de la obra son 2.626.573,99 €, ya se ha ejecutado en la primera fase 1.325.506. Esta segunda fase tiene un plazo de ejecución de cinco meses. Comenzó el pasado 24 de junio y se espera que esté finalizado en diciembre de 2019. Cabe recordar, que aunque se trata de una zona industrial privada, el Ayuntamiento de Casares se vio obligado a tomar las riendas del polígono industrial, haciéndose cargo de ejecutar las obras de urbanización ante la inactividad de la empresa promotora en realizar este proyecto.

El Ayuntamiento volverá a licitar la construcción de un huerto escolar en una parcela municipal, junto al colegio de El Carmen El Ayuntamiento de Estepona va a sacar de nuevo a licitación la construcción de un huerto escolar en una parcela municipal ubicada junto al colegio de El Carmen. Estas nuevas instalaciones tendrán una superficie de más de 1.000 metros cuadrados y servirán como un elemento educativo más para los alumnos. El alcalde, José María García Urbano, ha explicado que el huerto podrá ser utilizado por todos los colegios de Estepona con el objetivo de que los escolares puedan diferenciar los distintos árboles frutales y otro tipo de plantas. El Consistorio licitará de nuevo las obras después de que la empresa adjudicataria en el anterior concurso haya incumplido los plazos para el inicio de los trabajos. El huerto tendrá distintas zonas. Por un lado se van a construir tres bancales, habrá una zona de jardineras de madera que no tendrán ni bordes ni esquinas y también se construirá una zona de almacén y aseos adaptados. Además,habrá una zona techada que funcionará como aula abierta para que los escolares reciban todas las explicaciones correspondientes y se instalará el sistema de saneamiento, electricidad y riego. El proyecto incluye también el suministro de herramientas
básicas para el mantenimiento de los jardines como rastrillos, carretillas, azadones, regaderas, mangueras para riego o espuertas, entre otros. En un primer momento se plantarán árboles frutales variados a fin de que los escolares conozcan los diversos tipos de árboles entre los que estarán aguacates, chirimoyo, mango, níspero, albaricoquero, limonero, naranjo, mandarino y manzano. En los bancales también se realizará una plantación previa de plantas de temporada como patatas, pimientos, sandías, cebollas, calabacines, berenjenas, etc. Todo el recinto quedará perfectamente delimitado por una valla perimetral.
La creación de este huerto escolar tiene como objetivo el conocimiento del Medio Ambiente y su importancia para la vida. De esta manera, se fomenta entre los más pequeños el contacto con la tierra y la naturaleza para apreciar lo que nos da si la cuidamos y respetamos. Además, desde el punto de vista científico aprenderán el proceso de desarrollo de los seres vivos. Al mismo tiempo, los niños aprenden a consumir agua con responsabilidad y a valorar la importancia de consumir verduras y productos frescos cultivados por ellos mismos. A todo esto hay que añadir el fomento del trabajo en equipo, que será esencial para el buen funcionamiento del huerto escolar.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa que esta tarde se inaugura en el Auditorio Felipe VI el evento vintage de videojuegos ‘Expo Experience Play Again’, que contará con la mayor colección de videoconsolas retro originales y máquinas Arcade de toda Europa. Esta actividad, que permanecerá abierta al público hasta octubre, ofrece la posibilidad de jugar tanto a los aficionados nostálgicos a las consolas retro como a los más jóvenes que estén interesados en descubrir los videojuegos míticos del pasado. será escenario el próximo sábado 24 de agosto, a las 22 horas, del
espectáculo ecuestre ‘El arte de Andalucía a caballo’, dirigido por Carmelo Cuevas, jinete titulado en la Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre de Jerez, Campeón SICAB 2009. Carmelo Cuevas muestra escenas de extrema belleza con los ejercicios de alta escuela y otros de la equitación antigua tradicional, con caballos de pura raza española. Se trata de un homenaje a Andalucía, a sus gentes, a sus bailes, a su historia, a su arte… Con un vestuario a la usanza del siglo XVIII, la plaza de toros se convierte en un escenario en el que se presenta un ballet ecuestre basado en coreografías extraídas de las reprises de la doma clásica y vaquera y de otros trabajos de la equitación tradicional. El espectáculo, de casi dos horas de duración, incluye un amplio repertorio de modalidades de doma ecuestre. En cada representación se realizan de seis a ocho coreografías, que dejan un amplio repertorio de ejercicios de alta escuela como ‘levadas’, ‘cabriolas’, ‘corvetas’, ‘paso español’ y ‘riendas’, entre otras. Estepona contará con la primera ‘Playa sin Estepona introduces the first Humo’ de la Costa del Sol para promover hábitos ‘Smokeless Beach’ on the saludables Costa del Sol to promote healthy El Ayuntamiento de Estepona habits informa que en los próximos días va a habilitar una ‘Playa sin Humo’ en el centro de la ciudad para garantizar que los ciudadanos puedan disfrutar de un espacio donde no se pueda fumar frente al mar. Esta playa sin fumadores se convertirá en la primera de estas características en la Costa del Sol. La concejala adscrita al área de Playas, Susana Aragón, ha indicado que el espacio libre de humos se delimitará en una superficie aproximada de un kilómetro en la playa de La Rada, junto al parque acuático y una pista de juegos deportivos. El Consistorio ha optado por esta ubicación porque se trata de un área de litoral muy visitada por niños y personas interesadas en practicar deporte al aire libre. La edil ha comentado que esta medida tiene como objetivo promover hábitos de vida saludables y mejorar la salud de los usuarios de la playa. A ese respecto, ha recordado que el tabaquismo es la primera causa evitable de enfermedad, invalidez y muerte prematura en el mundo y que sólo en Europa provoca cada año más de 1,2 millones de fallecimientos, según datos de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS). Asimismo, ha señalado que
esta zona libre de humos en La Rada pretende sensibilizar a la población sobre la importancia de evitar que los residuos de tabaco permanezcan en el litoral. En ese sentido, ha subrayado que cada colilla que se deposita en la arena o en la orilla puede contaminar hasta 50 litros de agua. Además, la composición química de los cigarrillos hace que tarden hasta 10 años en degradarse, lo que provoca daños tanto en los fondos marinos como en las especies que los habitan. A todo esto hay que añadir que la creación de una ‘Playa sin Humo’ contribuye también a mejorar la imagen de la costa de la ciudad, ya que cada vez son más las personas que quieren contar con espacios públicos donde no
sufran las molestias que provoca el tabaco. La concejala adscrita al área de Playas ha anunciado que el Ayuntamiento de Estepona va a solicitar que la ‘Playa sin Humo’ se pueda adherir al proyecto de la Red Andaluza de Servicios Sanitarios y Espacios Libres de Humo, que tiene como objetivo concienciar a la población sobre la importancia de dejar de fumar, así como de los medios sanitarios que existen para abandonar este hábito nocivo. Por otra parte, Susana Aragón ha aclarado que el Consistorio no sancionará a las personas que decidan fumar en este enclave habilitado en la playa de La Rada. “Nuestra idea es informar a la población sobre la existencia de un espacio donde no se recomienda fumar por el elevado número de menores que se acercan a disfrutar de las atracciones acuáticas y de la pista deportiva, y porque cada vez son más las personas que están interesadas en contar con este tipo de lugares sin humos”, ha añadido la edil. Por último, ha recordado que el Ayuntamiento, en colaboración con una quincena de chiringuitos de la ciudad, ha puesto en marcha la campaña medioambiental ‘Las orillas sin colillas’, una iniciativa pionera en el municipio que tiene como objetivo evitar que los restos de tabaco acaben contaminando nuestras aguas. Para incentivar la limpieza en el litoral, los chiringuitos regalan un refresco o una cerveza a las personas que entregan un vaso lleno con colillas que hayan recogido en la arena o al mar. Para hacer reflexionar a los usuarios de las playas sobre la repercusión que tienen las malas prácticas de los humanos en el medioambiente, la delegación municipal de Turismo ha elaborado un spot que se difunde en redes sociales y en los medios municipales para informar sobre la necesidad de que las personas fumadoras no dejen restos de tabaco en las playas.

La Feria de Cancelada contará con las actuaciones de Azúcar Moreno y Los Inhumanos La barriada de Cancelada celebrará su Feria y Fiestas del 22 al 25 de agosto y contará con las actuaciones del dúo Azúcar Moreno, el domingo a las 23 horas y de los Inhumanos, el viernes a las 23:30 horas, entre otras actividades. El edil de extrarradio, José Antonio Vílchez, ha anunciado que la inauguración de la feria será el jueves, 22 de agosto, a partir de las 22:30 horas. Tras el corte de la cinta se coronará a las reinas y damas y se ofrecerá el pregón que, este año, estará a cargo de Francisco Naranjo Carrasco, vecino de Cancelada. El edil ha destacado también el esfuerzo que ha hecho el Ayuntamiento y la Comisión de Fiestas para la organización de un programa de actividades y conciertos de calidad y para
todos los públicos. Según ha declarado el responsable municipal, el Consistorio y del equipo de la Comisión de Fiestas ha confeccionado un programa muy variado para el disfrute de público de todas las edades. Así, además de los conciertos de Azúcar Moreno y Los Inhumanos, se contará con grupos de distintos estilos musicales, como La Movida -el viernes, a las 17 horas-, Sótano Sur -el sábado, a las 18 horasy como colofón la tradicional actuación del grupo de Tarifa 'Malamanera', que actuarán el domingo, a las 17 horas. Además, se ofrecerán distintas actividades deportivas y degustación de paella. Junto a esto, se homenajeará a los mayores de Cancelada con un almuerzo de feria. También los más pequeños
contarán con divertidos juegos como la Rampa Acuática o castillos hinchables. Igualmente, de un concurso de disfraces y de muchas otras actividades infantiles. Por otro lado, José Antonio Vílchez ha comentado que el broche de oro a estos festejos lo podrán los actos que se celebrarán, el domingo 25 de agosto, en honor a la Virgen del Purísimo Corazón de María, a la que se rendirá homenaje con una Santa Misa Rociera en la que participará el Coro de la Hermandad del Rocío de Estepona. Una vez finalizada la eucaristía tendrá lugar la procesión de la Patrona de Cancelada, que recorrerá las calles de esta barriada portada por las propias vecinas.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona ha dedicado al vecino de Estepona Andrés Gaitán Andrades un pasaje ubicado entre las urbanizaciones Playa del Ángel y Villas Andaluzas. El alcalde de Estepona, José María García Urbano, ha destacado la trayectoria empresarial de este entrañable hombre que ha regentado una de las primeras droguerías que abrieron sus puertas en Estepona. Al acto asistieron el expresidente del Senado Javier Rojo, vecinos y familiares del homenajeado. Asimismo, el primer edil ha valorado que este negocio siga aun abierto en su emplazamiento original, en la calle Adolfo Suárez de Figueroa, gracias a que Andrés ha sabido trasladar a sus descendientes el amor por este oficio. En la actualidad dos
de sus hijos se ocupan de mantener vivo el legado de su padre, ofreciendo el mismo servicio a sus clientes. Además de su valía como empresario, Andrés Gaitán es una persona muy querida entre sus vecinos, tal es así que esta iniciativa surgió a propuesta de las comunidades de propietarios de María Luisa Gardens y Vistamar I y II, que de esta forma querían reconocer a su vecino. Asimismo, cabe destacar el simbolismo y la importancia del lugar donde está ubicado este pasaje, ya que estos terrenos pertenecieron a la familia del homenajeado, ya que donde hoy se encuentran dichas urbanizaciones y la noria de agua en el entorno del Playa del Ángel existió una huerta que cultivaba junto a su padre y hermanos.

l Patronato de Recaudación Provincial se ha puesto en contacto con la delegación de Hacienda, que dirige Manolo Gil, para informar a la ciudadanía del plazo de pago voluntario del Impuesto de Bienes Inmuebles, que finalizará el 13 de septiembre. A partir de esa fecha, se devengarán los recargos e intereses correspondiente a la vía ejecutiva. Según comunicaba este organismo se ha enviado a los domicilios los avisos de pago, con los que se podrá abonar el impuesto
en cualquier Banco o Caja de Ahorros que figuran como Entidades Colaboradoras. De no haber recibido los avisos, podrán retirarlos en las oficinas del Patronato de Recaudación Provincial de Málaga, situado en calle Doctor Alvarez Leiva, nº 6, en Manilva, o en cualquiera de las oficinas del Patronato de Recaudación Provincial. Para cualquier información pueden personarse en la citada oficina o bien llamar al teléfono 951 95 70 00. También se puede obtener la carta de pago a través
de Internet, consultando la página web: www.prpmalaga. es. o llamando a Atención al Contribuyente al 90215 2000. Para una mayor comodidad, se recomienda el pago a través de domiciliación bancaria. Cabe recordar, con respecto a la subvención del IBI que puso en marcha el Ayuntamiento de Manilva, y cuyo documento se adjunta, que fue suspendida por la Administración General del Estado a través de la delegación del Gobierno en Andalucía y la Subdelegación del Gobierno en Málaga, ya que, según los citados órganos, vulnera la normativa vigente al carecer de competencias el Ayuntamiento para incluir subvenciones en la gestión de este impuesto que no están contempladas ni en la Ley General Tributaria ni el Texto Refundido de la Ley de Haciendas Locales, aprobado por Real Decreto Legislativo 2/2004, de 5 de marzo, habida cuenta la reserva de ley en materia, estableciendo, taxativamente, el artículo 9.1 del mencionado texto Refundido de la ley de Haciendas Locales que no podrán reconocerse otros beneficios fiscales en los tributos locales.

I Encuentro de Moras y Cristianas La delegación de Extranjeros del Ayuntamiento de Manilva, dirigida por Laura López, junto al Ateneo de nuestra localidad, preparan para el próximo 29 de agosto el I Encuentro de Moras y Cristianas, que se celebrará en el monumento del Castillo de la Duquesa a partir de las seis de la tarde y en el cual colaboran el área municipal de cultura y el consulado de Marruecos. A lo largo de la tarde se podrá disfrutar de una exposición de cuadros de mujeres y otra de libros de escritores locales. Se contará también con la visita de cónsul general de Marruecos, Mohamed Rafhaoui. A lo largo de toda la velada habrá barras instaladas en el recinto, una de ellas dedicada a comida y bebida marroquí. Para esa jornada la organización ha preparado una serie de actuaciones como el espectáculo flamenco a cargo de Cristina Seguín, a partir de las ocho de la tarde. A las ocho y media le tocará el turno a Ana Vélez, a la que seguirá a las nueve de la noche la cantante Zohra. La actividad se cerrará a partir de las nueve y media con la orquesta Al Ijlas.

Retirada de las aulas prefabricadas del Colegio de Sabinillas Con un presupuesto de 214.323 euros por parte de la Junta de Andalucía, y después de la insistencia del Ayuntamiento de Manilva, en lo que se convirtió en un problema histórico, comenzaban las obras de ejecución para la ampliación del Colegio de Educación Infantil y Primaria de San Luis de Sabinillas. El Equipo de Gobierno se desplazó a dicho lugar para comprobar los trabajos de retirada de las aulas prefabricadas, que continuarán con la adecuación de los espacios a las necesidades educativas existentes mediante la construcción de dos aulas de educación primaria. Incendios de verano, devastadores Estoy escribiendo esto con el corazón roto... otra vez. Un año después del devastador incendio de la zona de Princesa Kristina - Los Hidalgos, hemos sufrido otro gran incendio en Estepona. Para que podáis visualizar la envergadura de este incendio, el que sufrimos en Manilva el año pasado fue de 54 hectáreas, y ardió durante una noche. El incendio de Estepona, donde las ascuas aún están candentes, ha devastado más de 330 hectáreas, por lo que es 6 veces mayor al tuvimos aquí en Manilva. Aparentemente, este incendio lo originó alguien que hizo fuego, usando gasolina, para quemar un nido de avispones, una idea más que negligente. Esto obviamente sucedió porque esta persona no hizo caso de nuestra legislación vigente, donde se prohíben los fuegos y las barbacoas en verano, y pensó que no pasaría nada. Simplemente devastador. Aquí es cuando nos preguntamos el por qué las normas. Hay algunas que a priori pueden parecer ‘tontas’, pero tienen historia y razón de ser, no se trata de arruinarnos la diversión para que no disfrutemos de nuestras vacaciones, hay años de experiencia tras cada una de estas normas. Las prohibiciones de hacer barbacoas son por el riesgo de incendio. Tampoco es muy agradable si nuestro vecino de abajo hace una barbacoa y nos ‘ahuma’, ¡sobre todo si hace sardinas y
acabamos de tender la ropa! Muchas urbanizaciones en nuestra zona están rodeadas de campos o parcelas abandonadas, solo se necesita una chispa para provocar un incendio, tened cuidado. Los incendios también ocurren dentro de nuestras viviendas. Mis hijas aún encienden la vitro cuando están jugando, así que tengo que asegurarme de no dejar nada encima. Hace un par de años, la cocina de nuestro vecino ardió por completo porque su hijo encendió la vitro y había una caja encima. Afortunadamente, la Comunidad tenía extintores en el pasillo, por lo que salió corriendo, agarró uno y pudo apagarlo. Algo similar sucedió en Sabinillas en un apartamento el año pasado, por lo que los incendios en la cocina son más frecuentes de lo que pensamos. También debemos tener en cuenta los vehículos que tenemos en nuestros garajes. La combustión espontanea ocurre y cuando hay un incendio en el garaje pueden verse afectados los vehículos colindantes, y debe controlarse lo antes posible, ya que el humo puede ser muy denso y causar más problemas a los residentes y apartamentos del bloque, y a la estructura del edificio. Como comunidad, es obligatorio que tengamos extintores de incendios en cada planta, en los bloques de apartamentos, y debemos tener 1 por cada 15m de recorrido del pasillo, así que si
el pasillo es largo, deberá haber más de uno. Esto también es aplicable a los garajes, que también necesitan un sistema completo anti-incendios, incluyendo sensores, mangueras, detectores de CO2, etc. Este sistema es obligatorio por ley desde el 2006, por lo que todas las urbanizaciones construidas después de esta fecha tendrán un sistema instalado, y recomendamos que todos los edificios más antiguos instalen un sistema anti incendios por la seguridad de los residentes. Estos sistemas necesitan un mantenimiento periódico. Hay que utilizar una empresa certificada, que haga entrega de la documentación y los certificados necesarios, ya que, si hubiera un incendio, no solo se pone en riesgo nuestra
propiedad, sino también nuestras vidas. Es vital que tengáis debidamente asegurados vuestros vehículos y vuestra vivienda, y aseguraos de que los daños por incendio estén cubiertos, y que los trasteros también estén incluidos. Si los daños los causa un incendio forestal, los daños los cubre el Consorcio Nacional de Seguros, pero solo se harán cargo si tienes seguro y si este cubre el valor real de la propiedad. Si no tienes seguro, el Consorcio no se hará cargo de los daños. Cuando tuvimos las inundaciones del 2016, fue el consorcio quién se hizo cargo de los daños, y tristemente algunas de las familias afectadas que perdieron su vivienda y todo su contenido, no tenían seguro, así que lo per-
dieron absolutamente todo. Al incendió de Manilva sí me afectó personalmente el año pasado, y quiero agradecerles a todos los servicios de seguridad y de emergencias que trabajaron incesantemente día y noche, a nuestros bomberos locales, a los que vinieron voluntariamente desde lejos, que arriesgaron sus vidas para salvar las nuestras y nuestras pertenencias, a nuestra policía local, a nuestros servicios voluntarios de Protección Civil, nuestro Ayuntamiento y concejales, y todos y cada uno de las personas que participaron en las labores de control y extinción de este incendio devastador que podría haberse llevado mucho más de lo que se ha llevado, Gracias!

The devastation of summer fires heartbreaking
I’m writing this with a broken heart... again. One year on from the devastating fire in the Princesa Kristina – Los Hidalgos area, we have suffered another huge fire in Estepona. Just so that you can visualise the scope of this fire, the one we suffered in Manilva last year was 54 hectares, and it burned for one night. The fire in Estepona, where the embers are still hot, has devastated over 330 hectares, so it is over 6 times the size of the one we had here in Manilva. This fire was apparently caused by someone lighting a fire, with petrol, to burn a hornets’ nest, we all now know how negligent these actions are This obviously happened because this person did not take any notice of the ‘no fires or bbq’ laws and thought that ‘nothing would happen’. Just devastating. This is when we ask ourselves why rules and regulations, that apparently seem ‘silly’, are actually in place, and we realize that there is a reason for each and every one of them, they are not just because someone wants to ruin our summer, so we cand enjoy our holidays, there are years of expe-
rience behind them. No bbq’s is because of the fire risk. Also, if you have a bbq on a ground floor apartment, you can be ‘smoking’ your upstairs neighbours out, and that isn’t very pleasant, especially if you are having sardines and they have just hung their washing out! Many urbanizations in our area are surrounded by countryside or empty plots, it only takes a spark to cause a fire, be careful. Fires also happen inside our properties. My kids still turn on the stove sometimes when they are playing, so I have to make sure that I don’t leave anything on it. A couple of years ago our neighbour’s kitchen burnt out entirely because his kid turned the hob on and there was a box on it, so everything went up in flames. Luckily the Community had fire extinguishers in the hall, so he ran out and grabbed one and was able to put it out. Something similar happened in Sabinillas in an apartment last year, so kitchen fires are more frequent than we would think. We also have to take into consideration the vehicles that we have in our garages. Instant ignition does happen, when there is a fire in the garage, more vehicles can be affected, and it needs to be controlled asap, as the smoke can be very dense and cause further issues to the residents and apartments above, and to the structure of the building. As a Community, it is your legal obligation to have fire extinguishers on every floor, if you are in an apartment block, there needs to be one on every floor and every 15 meters, so if you have a long corridor, there needs to be more than one fire extinguisher on that floor. This is also applicable to garages, which also need a complete fire extinguishing system, including sensors, hoses, co2 detectors, etc.
This system became compulsory by law in 2006, so every urbanization built after this date will have a system installed, and we recommend that all older buildings install one too. These systems need to be serviced regularly to make sure that they work correctly. Please use a certified company who will provide the necessary documentation and certificates, because, at the end of the day, when there is a fire our property may be lost, but it is our lives that are at risk. Home & vehicle insurances are vital in these cases, so make sure you have a decent insurance, which includes fire damage, and make sure your storage unit (trastero) is included. If the damages are caused by a ‘campo’ fire, the damages will be covered by the Consorcio de Seguros. This is the National Insurance Organization, but they will only cover your damages if you have an insurance that is adequate to the value of your property. So, if you do not have insurance, the National Insurance Organisation will not cover the cost of damages to your property. When we had flooding only in 2016, it was the National insurance who covered the damages, and sadly some of the families who lost their homes were not insured, so they were left with absolutely nothing. On a personal note, as someone directly affected by the fire, I would like to thank all the security services involved, our local Firemen, the firemen who voluntarily came from other provinces as far away as Granada & Cordoba, and who risked their lives to save ours and our belongings, our local police, our voluntary services (Proteccion Civil), our Town Hall and councillors, and each and every one of the people involved in controlling this devastating fire that could of taken much more than it has, Gracias!

After the celebration of the Mass, the Virgin will leave in procession, accompanied by the "Manilva Town Band", where the grape offering will take place. LA IMPORTANCIA DEL IMPUESTO SOBRE LA RENTA DE NO RESIDENTES CON PROPIEDADES EN ESPAÑA (MODELO 210) Durante las últimas semanas la Agencia Tributaria ha estado llevando a cabo una nueva campaña para identificar a aquellos NO RESIDENTES que poseen propiedades en España pero que no han presentado la declaración tributaria. El impuesto que todos los no residentes poseedores de una propiedad deben presentar es el Modelo 210, y el plazo para presentarlo es el año natural, es decir, del 1 de enero al 31 de diciembre. Por ello, el Impuesto sobre la Renta de no-residentes para el año fiscal 2018 debe pagarse antes del 31 de diciembre de 2019. La Agencia Tributaria está enviando cartas amistosas a aquellos no residentes que posean propiedades en nuestro país y que, hasta la fecha, no hayan presentado y pagado este impuesto. Esta carta permite a aquellos que nunca han presentado el Modelo 210 rectificar la situación voluntariamente sin pagar multas ni intereses. Muchos propietarios de inmuebles no residentes no han paga-

The Tax Office is sending amicable letters to those Nonresident property owners who, to date, have failed to present and pay this tax. This communication enables those who have never presented the “Modelo 210”, to be able to rectify the situation voluntarily, without paying any fines or interest. Many NON-RESIDENT PROPERTY OWNERS have not paid these annual taxes, not because they wish to commit tax fraud, but due to mere ignorance of the existence of this tax. LTS - LOVE TO SING Community Choir
The International Community Choir LOVE TO SING meet every Wednesday evening from 7.30-9 .30pm throughout the year in the golf club at Duquesa Golf and at its best there are over 50 members. The choir began in September 2017 under the direction of Shirley Helleur and has grown in leaps and bounds over the last 2 years with many performances along the coast raising thousands of euros for well-deserved causes and charities including ADANA, St George’s and ADSI Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support International to name but a few. They have taken part in the International Days at Estepona and Duquesa and in the Manilva Pride earlier this year and the choir are planning many performances for the Autumn and Christmas seasons. Their concert in the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre in November 2018 was a sell-out performance and a repeat performance is planned for 8th November 2019 at the same venue with the support of Estepona Town Hall and Cultural Department. They will be raising funds under the local charity “Somas tu Ola” in aid of Sarah Almagro, a young Spanish girl from Marbella who has lost both her feet and hands to a meningococcus which caused sepsis. The money raised will help towards her care and necessary prosthetics. Tickets will be on sale via the choir and also at some local outlets. Check the local press for details nearer the event or contact us for details. However, LOVE TO SING have been struck with a serious drought of male voices and today launch their appeal to gentleman along the coast who have a voice, from beginners to confident vocalists, ALL are welcome. Currently there are 10 strong male singers who hold the bass & tenor sections together but there is a serious imbalance of male/female voices for the 4 and sometimes 5-part harmonies. Two of the male singers, Michael and
Steve, speak to us today about their experiences in the choir and this plea for male support. Michael - Having given up studying music and performance over 30 years ago, it's been a great opportunity at Love To Sing Choir to clear away decades of cobwebs, re-learn music and to have something else to focus on other than the usual mundane day to day goings on! Having heard about the choir I had been reluctant to join, thinking it was mainly a socially driven amateur get together, what’s transpired is twofold: A fantastic social group, brilliant if you are new to the area and want to meet people, with a committed approach to the music and performances, all under the direction of professional musician Shirley. The group is of mixed abilities - all are welcome - but we do work together supporting each other and that has enabled us to compile a huge modern repertoire in four parts, Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. To the layman that means it sounds pretty damn good! Steve had never sang in a choir before but now is one of our most enthusiastic and committed members– he reiterates Michael´s appeal for more male vocalists to balance the choir. The St George Charity was founded at the beginning of 2013 initially as a fundraising organisation to provide funding, equipment and services to worthy causes within the local community. As a registered association the St George Charity also provides a legal framework for individuals or groups to raise money under its umbrella (subject to approval and due diligence). The St George Charity raises money through a number of channels including the charity’s two shops in Sabinillas, which opened at the beginning of 2014 and 2016, and the shop in La Cancelada, Estepona which opened in 2017; collection tins in numerous local bars and restaurants; markets; online second hand shop; as well as money raised at a number of events such as the Sabi Street Party, quiz nights, etc. The St George Charity also receives donations from individual or group benefactors for which it is always grateful. The charity is also currently funding the studies of a local Spanish single mother towards her nursing qualifications. Now in its seventh year the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George’s Christmas Gift Appeal has just been launched. Each year between 400 and 500 children identified by Social Services in Manilva and Casares, and by the Emaus Social Kitchen in Estepona, receive a tote bag full of gifts with a value of at least 10 euros. The charity receives a list of children by age and gender (no names) and from the public’s generous donations the Saint George Charity sources gift items such as books, arts and crafts material, games, etc., appropriate to the age and gender of the children on the list. By purchasing from wholesalers, who also give the charity a discount, it is possible to provide a meaningful gift to all the children. In addition the gift bags are distributed to the children’s parents in time for Three Kings as the charity believes that the only thing worse than a child not receiving a gift during the festive season, is a parent not being able to to give one. Whilst donations of gifts are always welcome, the charity prefers cash donations so that the children can receive gifts of similar quality and substance. Donations can be made at any of the Saint George Charity shops in Sabinillas and La Cancelada, Estepona.

The Saint George Charity is also working on a project to create
Charity & Community a cultural integration centre, in collaboration with the local muslim association, which will provide workshops and classes and a meeting centre primarily for youngsters and women of all nationalities, to learn skills and crafts in a multicultural environment. This summer, for the first time, the St George Charity welcomed a number of students as volunteers from schools and colleges in the Malaga region and Seville. Jorge Escorza and Raúl Cruz, age eighteen and seventeen respectively, from Seville and hoping to attend university, asked to help at the charity shops to find out more about the workings of this local association and to add the accreditation to their Curriculum Vitae. Although Raúl has experience working with the Red Cross and a Food Bank in Seville, there are currently no charity shops
in his local area raising funds for community or other projects. St George demonstrated to Jorge and Raúl not only the general running of the shops and stores, but also their commitment to the wellbeing of their volunteers and the social care side of the charity. Judith Beaumont, the General Manager and Secretary of the Association, said that it had been an absolute pleasure to have these students working with the charity and would be delighted to welcome them again in the future.

BuddyUp (Manilva) Community Support Group In response to a tragic situation earlier in the year a number of local residents came together to form the BuddyUp (Manilva) Community Support Group, a ‘befriending’ group to provide support, comfort and a point of contact for people facing a variety of challenges. The BuddyUp group is coordinated by Marguerite Wilkins, and already has a number of members signed up. Working closely with other local charities and organisations, including the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George, Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva, Citizens’ Advice, Cudeca, Social Services, etc., the group aims to provide support and advice for the elderly, disabled, those who have recently lost a partner, single parents, divorcees, the socially excluded, people that are new to the area, in fact anyone who might need someone to talk to or just pointing in the right direction.
BuddyUp volunteers work in pairs and have access to a wide range of resources to call upon depending on the needs of those they are assisting. Saint George Charity Shops The St George Charity operates three charity shops, two in Sabinillas, Manilva and one in La Cancelada, Estepona. In Sabinillas one of the shops sells quality second hand clothing, shoes, hats and accessories; whilst the other sells a wide range of secondhand furniture, decorative items, household goods, books, cds,
dvds, etc. Our shop in La Cancelada sells the same full range of secondhand items as our Sabinillas shops and also stocks larger items of furniture and beds. Thanks to our generous donors there are new items in the shops daily, so visit regularly so as not to miss out on that fabulous bargain.
As well as stocking some great quality items the St George Charity shops also rent out various items such as wheelchairs, walking aids, travel cots, etc. The shop management welcome donations of quality secondhand items, and can arrange collection if needed. Food Bank The Saint George Charity runs a food bank initiative to help local people who are finding it difficult to make ends meet, and invites people to donate non-perishable goods, such as long life milk, pasta, rice, biscuits, tinned meat and fish, tinned vegetables, etc., along with toiletries, personal hygiene and cleaning items.
The charity will supplement these items with fresh produce, and will distribute on a weekly basis to a number of individuals and families that have been identified as being in urgent need of this service. CUDECA Pop/Rock Tribute Festival “Music Story” On Friday, September 6, Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice will hold the Pop/Rock Music Story Tribute Festival with the goal of raising funds to continue caring for people with cancer and other advanced illnesses. It will take place in the Municipal Auditorium of Benalmádena at 21:00 hours and will feature performances by bands: "The Soaks" - Tribute band 60's and 70's; "The Silver Beats" - tribute to The Beatles; and "Los Remolones" - tribute to The Ramones. The Soaks - Tribute band 60's and 70's A band performing covers from the 60s and 70s that travels through the history of pop music through the most important figures: Bowie, Michael Jackson, Queen, The Who, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Credence Clearwater Revival, The Byrds, Fleetwood Mac, etc. Created in 2014, it is made up of Marcos Rojas, Juan Rojas (bass and chorus); Luís Benítez (guitar); and David Atencia (drums), and they have toured the main halls of the province of Málaga highlighting ZZ Pub, Sala Paris 15, Pihama Bar, POGS, Mulse, La Cochera Cabaret, etc. The Silver Beats - The Beatles Tribute Malagueño Rock'n Roll group tribute to the rockiest Beatles, more than 20 years old. Their journey began in 1993 with the recording of a home-made album versions of The Beatles; and winning that same year the national music contest of the radio program "Gomaespuma". The band, formed by Juan A. Anillo (solo guitar and choirs); Jesús Garcia (vocals), Félix Jiménez (rhythmic guitar and vocals), Germán Duarte (bass and vocals) and Juan Gámiz (drums); has performed in the Festival Fuengirola Pop Weekend, La Sala Puerto Banús, The Beatles Festival Benalmádena, Theater Club Málaga, The Hall Málaga, and so on. The Remolones - The Ramones Tribute Tribute band of the punk band The Ramones made up of four survivors of
the fantastic decade of Malaga pop: Eu, Kiko, Rick and Viktor Remolone. Viajaremos en ese bajel de hilo, las olas y las tormentas determinarán si somos leopardos de lluvia dispuestos a derramarnos y a cruzar los mares, valles, calles, sombras y conocimientos, un talento despojado de miserias (porque la aventura es cultura del instinto) para que otros hombres, cuales nubes ligeras, noten que el barco de hilo sigue paseándose por el universo ecuánime, y que en él, dos hombres, navegan, y juntaron sus manos como llanuras que acogen la semblanza de un viaje al mismo lugar.

Una Muerte Repentina Hoy, sin aliento. Ayer mismo, su vida que latía. Hoy, nuca helada, agnosia en la madrugada, corazón sin relojes. Ayer, un latido del cielo rociando sobre su cabello témpora de otoño. Un dibujo es la vida, una fuente que brota hasta cantarle a la tierra su atropello, su catarata firme de clavar en la tierra alfileres de agua, de soledad y vino, murciélagos incompatibles. Dibujo suyo que hoy abraza un comentario: la razón de estar vivo porque un nombre resuena, reconociendo el labio que las palabras no son continencia, que quieren salir y galopar por las calles como caballos de abecedarios locos que nadie puede oír... Hoy, sin aliento. Ayer, el amigo que le hablaba, y nos hablaba, el fútbol y dentro del campo un sol fuerte que pinchaba, aguijón que augura las tormentas posteriores. Ayer, tenías palabras de consuelo para otros; hoy es mentira que tu cuerpo yazca, muerto –¿muerto?–; ese final, sin asimilarlo el mundo y sus quehaceres. ¿Y los míos? ¿Y los de todos? ¡Cuánto trabajo! Las enfermedades que tu mascota te puede transmitir Muchos estudios demuestran que tener una mascota aporta diversos beneficios a sus dueños. Sin embargo, también son muy diversas las enfermedades que esos dulces compañeros pueden transmitir. Las zoonosis son las infecciones o enfermedades del animal que son transmisible al ser humano en condiciones naturales o viceversa. A continuación, detallamos las más comunes: Enfermedades transmitidas por los perros: Las garrapatas son el principal mal que afecta a los canes. Aunque no es muy común, las pueden pasar a las personas. La mayoría de estos insectos no transmiten enfermedades, pero algunas portan bacterias que pueden causar: fiebre por garrapatas de Colorado; enfermedad de Lyme; fiebre maculosa de las Montañas Rocosas y tularemia. Estas y otras enfermedades pueden causar daño al corazón, al
sistema nervioso, al riñón, a las glándulas suprarrenales y al hígado, y pueden provocar la muerte. Otra enfermedad muy famosa en estos animales es la rabia, la cual puede producir altas fiebres y un comportamiento extremadamente agresivo. Se contagia a través de la saliva de un can, un gato u otro mamífero infectado. El gato puede transmitirte toxoplasmosis: La toxoplasmosis, una enfermedad infecciosa ocasionada por el protozoo Toxoplasma gondii, parásito intracelular que se transmite desde los animales, especialmente, los felinos, a los seres humanos a través de diferentes vías de contagio. Afecta mayormente al feto, si la mujer embarazada se contagia; y también a niños, ancianos y personas con déficit inmunológico, provocando infecciones asintomáticas. Aproximadamente una de cada tres personas en el mun-
do se cree que están infectadas con el Toxoplasma gondii, que se ha relacionado con la esquizofrenia y los cambios de comportamiento, pero a menudo no produce síntomas, ya que se esconde en el cerebro y en las células musculares. ¿Tienes reptiles? The urine of rodents can be lethal: Rats, common house mice and hamsters can transmit diseases to be aware of, especially through their urine and faeces, diseases such as toxoplasmosis, hantavirus infections, leptospirosis, tapeworms, trichinosis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, among others. Responsible pet ownership also involves caring for their health. Prevention is the key in preventing your best friends falling ill or passing on diseases to you: properly discard their droppings, avoiding direct contact with them; and try not to kiss them on the face and make sure that their fluids do not come into contact with yours.

Have you overindulged this summer? 6 steps to kick start the leaner, fitter, healthier YOU! It’s fine to want to look and feel good, a lot of people work really hard from Christmas to summer to look their best on the beach, but once summer comes to a close, the effects of all the extra ‘cheat’ days begin to show, the extra alcohol, too many ice creams, dinners out, it’s too hot to train, I’m in holiday mode!!!! Trust me I’ve heard every excuse, so what should you do? Remember that getting fit is about more than weight, it’s about strength, endurance, and good health, too. Getting into shape will help you feel good, inside and out, look good with or without clothes and improve your quality of life.
1. Set a goal - beyond weight. Don’t hang all your expectations and motivations on a number on the scale. With weight loss, plateaus are common. If you set yourself a goal beyond the immediate, you’re likely to maintain your motivation. For example, aim to hike a particularly steep trail or swim several extra laps – the endurance and strength you gain from exercise will help you achieve these activity goals, no matter what the scale says.
2. Find the kind of routine that works for you.
Different things work for different people, some prefer to exercise at home and some prefer the gym; some prefer a flexible exercise schedule and others need regimented time slots devoted to exercise; some like to mix it up and some prefer to do the same exercises in the same sequence. You’re more likely to adhere to your exercise plan if it fits your style.
3. Don’t just focus on cardio; strength-training is important, too. Building lean muscle does burn fat, but not as much as cardio. However, it’s still an equally important part of any get fit plan. Strength and endurance require strong core muscles, legs, and arms.
4. Mix it up with challenges. Keeping up with your long-term routine can get a little stale. Throw in a weekly challenge when you feel your motivation, or book a PT to show you some new challenges/ improve your technique .
5. Don’t get injured! Exercising irresponsibly can land you with an injury that leaves you on the sidelines. Don’t over do it, you can’t play catch up, if you have been inactive

6. If you’re growing bored with your routine, do something different. You don’t have to do the same exercises every time. There are so many different types of exercise: interval training, circuit training, yoga, Zumba, spinning, swimming, running, who said you have to choose one and stick to it? Boredom leads to demotivation, combat it by switching things up when needed. And finally, you can’t out train a bad diet! Being healthy starts with good choices, look at what you eat. Ice Dance - Bobby Thompson Trophy
Gibraltar's Kings Bastion Sports & Leisure Centre was recently the venue for the 2019 Bobby Thompson Ice Dance Trophy 2019. The trophy, originally known as the Queen's Cup has been in existence since the sixties, and has been won by many famous British skaters, including Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. It has been donated by Courtney Jones OBE, himself a former World Ice Dance Champion, and re-named to recognise Choreographer Bobby Thompson, who along with Courtney was closely involved with Torvill and Dean, choreographing, costuming and helping to produce their winning Bolero routine. Both Courtney and Bobby were on hand to judge the competition, and were joined by local politician and community representative, Dean Tyler Shelton. The competition is different to others, in so far as each judge marks a different aspect of the programme: 1 Technical Skating. 2 Choreography and Musical Interpretation.

The other two participants in the final round were: Neve Crossley and Emily Crosskey. This event and classes are organised by Mike & Jenni Smith with Jenni being a top level British International Coach, with extensive World Championship experience. They do regular classes for Beginners on Wednesdays, children 4.15 - 5.00 pm and adults 6.30 - 7.00 pm plus one-to-one lessons At times to suit on Wednesdays and Sunday mornings. The next classes start on Wednesday September 3rd. In the meantime, there are special Summer Sessions on Monday - Wednesday July 8th, 9th and 10th. Dean Shelton commented "It was a really nice day and I really enjoyed the experience and working with the judges and guys involved".
Gibraltar is preparing to stage the 34th Gibraltar National Games from the 18th to the 20th September Special Olympics Gibraltar is preparing to stage the 34th Gibraltar National Games from the 18th to the 20th September in what is destined to be their biggest and best games yet. Teams have been invited from various countries to participate in the Games including the usual athletics, swimming and ten-pin bowling events, and the fiercely fought five-a-side football competition. This year, for the first time, golf will also be featuring in the Games, having been a Special Olympics Gibraltar sport for over 5 years now. Courtesy of the San Roque Club, Gibraltar golfers, including our medal winning players from the World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi in March, will face international opposition in a 9-hole competition and a skills event. The Games kick off on the 18th September at 6pm with the usual opening ceremony and athletics competition in the Victoria Stadium. Friends, family and supporters are urged to come along and join in this special occasion. The football and golf competitions will take place on Thursday 19th September with the bowling and swimming competitions, and the closing ceremony, on Friday 20th September. Further details will be announced nearer the time. Members of the public are warmly invited to come along and support the athletes in all
these events. A new campaign aimed at encouraging holidaymakers staying in self-catering accommodation in Spain to recycle their household waste on holiday has been launched by HolidayFootprint.com an informative website dedicated to providing free useful tools and practical information about good sustainable practices in the holiday rental industry. A recent survey on recycling in the holiday rental industry showed that barely half (57.1%) of holiday rental owners offer recycling facilities.
