Bienvenidos a la edición de febrero de The Resident. Espero que hayas disfrutado de este tiempo tras la Navidad donde parece que todo se detiene un poco. Yo lo he hecho, pero sé que no va a durar mucho, ya que con febrero llega el Carnaval. Este año llega pronto, ya que está vinculado con la Semana Santa y se celebra más o menos al inicio de la Cuaresma. La mayoría de ciudades y pueblos celebrarán el Carnaval, y podrás encontrar detalles sobre algunos eventos locales en estas páginas. También, si puedes, acércate a Cádiz para disfrutar del Carnaval por excelencia. Por supuesto no podemos olvidarnos de que a mediados de mes se celebra San Valentín; bueno, puedes olvidarte pero quizá debas sufrir las consecuencias. No digas que no te lo hemos recordado. Y finalmente, a finales de mes, tendremos la Semana Blanca y el Día de Andalucía. El Día de Andalucía se celebra el 28 de febrero y conmemora el referéndum del 28 de febrero de 1980 sobre el Estatuto de Autonomía para Andalucía, en el cual los andaluces votaron por el estatuto que convirtió a Andalucía en una comunidad autónoma de España. El Día de Andalucía se celebra en toda la región, pero un lugar donde tiene un significado importante es en Casares, lugar de nacimiento de Blas Infante, conocido como el “Padre de Andalucía”. Blas Infante hizo campaña por un estado andaluz durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, antes de ser ejecutado por las tropas de Franco en 1936. En muchos municipios y ciudades de Andalucía, la gente decora sus balcones con la bandera de Andalucía y con banderolas que reflejan sus barras verdes y blanca. Welcome to the February edition of The Resident. I hope you have enjoyed the post Christmas lull in activity, I know I have, but it has been short lived, as with February comes the Carnival season. This year it has come early as it is linked to Easter and corresponds loosely to the beginning of Lent. Most towns and villages will be celebrating and you can find details of some local events in these pages. Also look out for trips to Cadiz for the mother of all Carnivals! Of course we can’t forget the middle of the month and Saint Valentine’s, well you can forget but at your own peril. Don’t say I didn’t remind you. And finally at the end of the month is Semana Blanca and Andalucia Day. The Día de Andalucia (Andalucia Day) is celebrated on February 28 and commemorates the February 28, 1980 referendum on the Statute of Autonomy for Andalucia, in which the people of Andalucia voted for the statute that made Andalucia an autonomous community of Spain. Andalucia Day is celebrated across the region, but nowhere does it have a stronger meaning than in Casares, birthplace of Blas Infante, better known as ‘The Father of Andalucia’. Blas Infante campaigned for an Andalucian state during the first part of the twentieth century before being executed by Franco’s troops in 1936. In many municipalities and cities of Andalucia, people decorate their balconies with the flag of Andalucia and with bunting echoing its green-and-white bars. Gibraltar adjudica un contrato de obras para su planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales

Gibraltar Awards Advanced Works Contract for Wastewater Treatment Plant

El Gobierno de Gibraltar ha adjudicado hoy un contrato de obras a la unión empresarial (“joint venture”) formada entre NWG Commercial Services Limited (“Northumbrian Water”) y Modern Water que abarca tanto el diseño y el estudio topográfico necesarios para la planificación definitiva y las aprobaciones medioambientales como las obras preliminares sobre el terreno para el tratamiento de las aguas residuales en Gibraltar. Estos son los últimos pasos antes de que se pueda empezar a trabajar en el proyecto, que abarca el diseño, la construcción y la operación de la planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales y tiene por objeto tratar todas las aguas residuales urbanas y las aguas pluviales del Peñón para toda la población de Gibraltar. The Government of Gibraltar has awarded an Advanced Works Contract to the joint venture between NWG Commercial Services Limited (“Northumbrian Water”) and Modern Water, which covers the design and survey work required for final planning and environmental approvals as well as preliminary site works for the treatment of sewage in Gibraltar. These are the final steps before work can commence on the overall project, which is for the design, build and operation of the wastewater treatment plant, to treat all of Gibraltar’s urban wastewater as well as storm flows for the entire population of Gibraltar. Following the formal tender process, the Joint Venture was announced as the preferred bidder for the project. Modern Water will be responsible for the design and build portion of the contract. On completion, of the design and build phase of the project Northumbrian Water will be responsible for the operation of the plant for 20 years, via a sub-contract with AquaGib. The intention is that works on site

Amplia participación en la asamblea de presupuestos participativos de Casares Costa

omo en las anteriores asambleas de Casares y Secadero, los miembros del equipo de gobierno se encargaron de presentar el proceso de presupuestos participativos. En este caso el alcalde, Pepe Carrasco, la teniente de alcalde de Costa, Antonia Pineda, y la concejal de Participación Ciudadana, Rocio Ruiz, expusieron los objetivos y funcionamiento, e informaron del estado del proyecto elegido por los vecinos en la anterior edición, en el que se ha optado por una unión alternativa entre Camarate y Buenas Noches al no contar con permisos de la Dirección General de Carreteras para hacer un camino peatonal junto a la autovía. Seguidamente los vecinos, divididos en grupos, trabajaron sobre diversas propuestas entre las que priorizaron: crear una guardería, ampliar las infraestructuras de recogida de agua, mejorar la señalización vial de las urbanizaciones, habilitar nuevas zonas de aparcamientos, y una pista deportiva de fútbol en Marina de

Casares. Como en anteriores asambleas, ahora serán los técnicos municipales los que deben estudiar la viabilidad de las propuestas para que puedan incluirse entre las opciones que se llevarán a votaciones el próximo mes de marzo. Además de estas propuestas para los proyectos de infraestructuras, el próximo lunes 5 de febrero se celebra la Asamblea para los proyectos de creación de empleo. Será a las 18.30 horas en el Salón de Asociaciones de la Plaza Marcelino Camacho, y a la misma están invitados los vecinos de los tres núcleos del municipio. En plataforma digital se pueden hacer propuestas hasta el 6 de febrero. Todas las personas mayores de 14 años y empadronadas en el municipio pueden hacer propuestas, apoyarlas y votarlas a través de internet. El procedimiento es fácil. Y además puedes utilizar un alias si no quieres que aparezca tu nombre.

El nuevo desfibrilador está ubicado en un habitáculo especial que cuenta con luz de alarma y puerta que al abrirse lanza un sonido de alarma. El disco presenta un repertorio de fandangos casareños interpretados por La Panda Fandanguera, una fabulosa reunión de aficionados locales y de la comarca que interpretan fandangos populares y otros nuevos que se asocian al estilo local de Casares. El DVD recoge un pequeño documental musical sobre la presentación en directo del repertorio grabado en el CD con el añadido del baile a cargo del Grupo de Fandango

de la Escuela Municipal de Baile de Casares. La grabación del CD y del DVD se realizaron en el Centro Cultural Blas Infante de Casares durante el pasado verano de 2017. La intención de la Concejalía de Cultura con este CD-DVD es la de redoblar esfuerzos en la conservación, mantenimiento y promoción del fandango local. Por un lado se pretende registrar el cante, el baile y el toque del fandango de Casares en las mejores condiciones posibles, algo que no se había hecho anteriormente. Además, con esta publicación se persigue justificar la petición a la Junta de Andalucía del reconocimiento del Fandango de Casares como patrimonio del pueblo de Casares, es decir, como Bien de Interés Cultural en la categoría de actividad de interés etnológico*. Para este proyecto la Concejalía ha contado desde el primer momento con el apoyo y la participación del grupo de aficionados locales y de la Directora de la Escuela Municipal de Baile quienes han dirigido la iniciativa con financiación municipal. Las entradas para el espectáculo cuestan 3€ y se podrán a la venta próximamente en la Casa Natal, en las Tenencias de Alcaldía o en el Centro Cultural una hora antes de la presentación. The CD-DVD "Las Estrellitas del cielo. A Recital of Fandangos de Casares" is to be presented on Tuesday, 27 February "Las Estrellitas del cielo" is a CD and DVD recording, produced the Casares Town Council, featuring a repertoire of fandangos from Casares, played by La Panda Fandanguera, a group of local fans who perform popular fandangos and create new ones associated with this local style of Casares. The DVD includes a small musical documentary about the live presentation of the repertoire recorded on the CD with the addition of the dance by the Fandango Group of the Casares Municipal Dance

School. The recording of the CD and the DVD were made at the Blas Infante Cultural Centre during the summer of 2017. The intention of the Department of Culture is through this CD-DVD to redouble efforts in the conservation, maintenance and promotion of local fandango. On the one hand it is a record of the singing, dancing and the feel of Casares fandango in the best possible conditions, something that had not been done before. In addition, this publication seeks to justify the re-

quest to the Junta de Andalucía for the recognition of the Fandango de Casares as a heritage of the town of Casares, that is, as a Cultural Asset in the category of activity of ethnological interest *. Are you “legally” here in Spain? In order to be considered as fully resident in Spain, you must have registered on the Padron ie be on the electoral register. Being on the Padron means a lot more than being able to vote in local elections. Many benefits in Spain are based on years on the Padron. Usually a minimum of 5 years is required in order to claim disability benefit and other help as a carer etc. Remember to register your children too. Even though they cannot vote until age 18, they might in the future need to claim a benefit and if not registered as soon as they arrive in Spain they might have to wait to get something they are entitled to. Citizen’s Advice Spain is very helpful when dealing with specific cases and could help you apply for a historical Padron (getting your Padron backdated, though this is not easy to do). With Brexit on the horizon it is even more important to be fully registered as living in Spain. Residencia, annual tax return, 720 tax return, which is due before the end of March. La primera publicación estaba dedicada a las setas, mientras que esta segunda edición se centra en las aves. La concejala de Medio Ambiente, Noelia Rodríguez, ha explicado que la idea es que la colección sirva para dar a conocer el patrimonio natural con el que cuenta Casares, poniendo en valor la fauna y la flora autóctonas con un doble objetivo, que sirva de vía de divulgación de los recursos locales y que contribuya a potenciar el turismo de naturaleza en el municipio. La guía ha sido elaborada por el Grupo Ornitológico del Estrecho y cuenta con unas impresionantes fotografías del casareño Andrés Rojas Sánchez. La línea de ferrocarril costera vuelve a estar sobre la mesa

urante años, las autoridades locales y las empresas en la Costa del Sol occidental han estado pidiendo un enlace de ferrocarril que preste servicio a la población costera al oeste del servicio de tren existente desde Málaga a Fuengirola. En 204, se realizaron estudios y planes para crear una línea que fuera desde Málaga a Estepona, con estaciones en Marbella, San Pedro y Estepona, y una fecha de finalización aproximada del 2012. Desafortunadamente, la crisis financiera hizo que el proyecto se aparcara de nuevo y a pesar de las constantes peticiones, no se le asignó ningún presupuesto. En 2014 el proyecto fue retomado de nuevo y se realizaron nuevos estudios que identificaron varias rutas potenciales. Aunque se ha concluido que hay pocas posibilidades de tener un enlace AVE de alta velocidad, sería viable ampliar la línea MálagaFuengirola hasta Marbella y Estepona. Se trazaron cinco posibles rutas, de las cuales tres han sido rechazadas por ser demasiado caras o inviables debido a la infraestructura existente.

De las dos restantes: una sería una línea con un trazado completamente subterráneo siguiendo casi la carretera costera A7, que tendría un coste de 2000 millones de Euros hasta Marbella y de 3800 millones de Euros hasta Estepona. Una alternativa más barata sería una ruta que fuera por la superficie paralela a la autopista AP-7, con secciones subterráneas donde se desviaría hacia los principales municipios, con un coste estimado de 1000 millones de Euros hasta Marbella y 2400 millones de Euros hasta Estepona. Uno de los principales obstáculos es la densidad de las zonas urbanizadas, que hace imposible construir la vía sobre la superficie sin apartarse demasiado hacia adentro para que sea una alternativa de transporte atractiva. Las proyecciones de pasajeros son de entre 4,6 a 6 millones de pasajeros en la sección Fuengirola a Marbella hacia el 2024 y de 7,4 a 8,15 millones para la opción Fuengirola a Estepona. Los estudios geológicos están casi finalizados y se trazará un nuevo plan a escala 1/5000 una vez finalizados.

Coastal rail link back on the table

or years local authorities and businesses on the western Costa del Sol have been demanding a rail link serving the coastal population west of the existing Malaga to Fuengirola train service. In 2004 studies were carried out and plans drawn up for a line running from Malaga to Estepona with stations in Marbella, San Pedro and Estepona with a proposed completion date of 2012. Unfortunately the financial crisis led to the project being shelved and despite constant petitioning no money was allocated for it. Cut to 2014 and the project was taken down from the shelf and dusted off and new studies carried

out which identified a number of potential routes. Whilst it has been concluded that there is little possibility of a high speed AVE link, it would be feasible to extend the Malaga-Fuengirola line to Marbella and Estepona. Five possible routes were drawn up of which three have been rejected as too expensive or too disruptive to existing infrastructure. Of the two remaining: one would see the line running in entirety underground almost following the A7 coast road which would have a cost of 2 billion euros to Marbella and 3.8 billion euros if it extended to Estepona. A cheaper alternative would be for a route which runs mostly on the surface parallel to the

AP-7 toll road, with underground sections where it deviated towards the main population centres with at an estimated coast of 1 billion euros to Marbella and 2.4 billion euros to Estepona. One of the main obstacles is the density of the urbanised areas making it impossible to build the track on the surface without routing too far inland to make it an attractive transport alternative. Passenger projections are for 4.6 to 5 million passengers on the Fuengirola to Marbella section by 2024 and 7.4 to 8.15 million for the Fuengirola to Estepona option. Geological surveys are nearing completion and a new 1/5000 scale plan drawn up once completed.

El puente tendrá una longitud de 52 metros de largo y tres metros de ancho. Será una pasarela peatonal que unirá la calle Terral y la plazoleta Playa Bella. Debido al entorno natural en el que se ubica, donde existe un valor paisajístico, natural y cultural, se realizará con madera como elemento estructural. Las obras proyectadas se ajustan a las especificaciones del PGOU. En este sentido, hay que recordar que, la urbanización de la zona de El Ángel, aprobada en 2003, contemplaba la ejecución del vial de comunicación; no obstante, nunca llegó a ser ejecutado por la entidad promotora y responsable de la actuación. Por ello, el Ayuntamiento ha decidido concluir esta conexión con cargo al

aval depositado -en aquel momento- por parte de la entidad promotora, como garantía de la finalización de los trabajos. El proyecto de ejecución del puente tiene un presupuesto de 273.537,45 euros -IVA incluidoy saldrá próximamente a licitación. La ejecución de las obras tendrá un plazo de 3 meses desde la firma del contrato con la empresa adjudicataria. Junto a esta acción, el Ayuntamiento llevará a cabo un plan de mejora integral de todo el entorno, que incluye la puesta en valor de un acueducto existente en el entorno. Se trata de uno de los los dos últimos vestigios en término municipal de sistema de regadío del siglo XIX. Está

dentro del catálogo municipal de bienes etnográficos y rememora la época en la que Estepona exportaba sus productos agrícolas. Fue ejecutado sobre una antigua alberca que data de épocas anteriores, considerándose la localidad una de las principales zonas de la comarca que se dedicada a la exportación de productos agrícola. Asimismo, el nuevo puente peatonal se integrará en el proyecto de senda litoral, que pretende unir todo el litoral de Estepona mediante caminos peatonales, y al mismo tiempo permitirá el tránsito peatonal entre dos urbanizaciones que estaban históricamente incomunicadas por el arroyo Hornacinos.

El nuevo mural, que ha sido realizado por el artista José Fernández Ríos, tiene una superficie de 175 metros cuadrados y se ha convertido en la obra número 52 de este proyecto cultural que transforma inmuebles en grandes lienzos al aire libre.

Estepona Carnival 2018 Estepona will hold its annual Carnival celebrations on Saturday 10 February in the El Calvario Park, next to the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre. The programme kicks off the evening before on Friday 9 from 5 pm with a Carnival Festival and Masked Ball in the Senior citizens activity centre in Estepona followed the next day with a full programme of events.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa que la celebración del Carnaval 2018 tendrá lugar el próximo sábado, 10 de febrero de 2018, en el Parque Municipal El Calvario. El programa previsto por la delegación de Ferias y Fiestas, es el siguiente, si bien, la víspera del Carnaval, el viernes 9, a las 17:00 horas, habrá una Fiesta de Carnaval y Baile de Disfraces en el Centro de Participación Activa de Mayores de Estepona:

Actividades: de 12:00 a 15:00 horas: Fiesta infantil en el Parque El Calvario, donde los más pequeños podrán disfrutar de un grupo de animación. Habrá un desfile de participantes para la Elección de Ninfa y Momo, y Mejor Disfraz (Modalidad infantil y Adultos). Premios: 100 € para cada una. Jornada Gastronómica organizada por el Motoclub “¿Ónde Vamos?”. En caso de lluvia, la celebración tendrá lugar en el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel.

Nilva 2016, Medalla de Oro en el Concurso Nacional El vino NILVA 2016, blanco seco, Moscatel de Alejandría, elaborado por Nilva Enoturismo SL en Manilva (Málaga), ha obtenido la Medalla de Oro en la V Edición de los Premios Monovino, el Concurso Oficial que premia los mejores vinos monovarietales del mercado. El pasado 26 de Enero tuvo lugar en las instalaciones de la Escuela Española de Cata de Madrid la sesión de catas finales. El Jurado de los Premios ha estado compuesto por reconocidos profesionales del sector y expertos en cata y análisis sensorial. Según manifiestan los organizadores, este Concurso ha servido para poner en valor y galardonar a los mejores vinos elaborados con una única variedad de uva que se encuentran hoy día en el mercado. De hecho, estos Premios pueden presumir de ser, un año más, el Concurso Oficial celebrado en nuestro país que acoge el mayor número de vinos producidos con distintos varietales. El concurso aboga por dar a conocer las particularidades y matices de los distintos viñedos nacionales, apostando por el varietal como un concepto universal para valorar la personalidad de un vino, algo que los consumidores cada vez tienen más en cuenta en sus decisiones de compra. El Parque Canino, situado en la zona norte del pueblo mexicano, se ha dividido en varias zonas para una mayor comodidad de

los usuarios. Contará con áreas diferenciadas por usos, pero no delimitadas físicamente. La zona principal es la de Fortalecimiento Muscular de los perros y la zona de esparcimiento. La instalación tendrá un vallado perimetral de dos metros de altura, mobiliario urbano, bancos y comedor de madera con zona de sombra, aparcamiento de bicicletas y señalización.

Manilva deja su sello y su impronta en FITUR Manilva makes its mark at FITUR

agníficas conclusiones las obtenidas por el alcalde de Manilva, Mario Jiménez, de la repercusión que ha tenido nuestro municipio en la feria de Turismo más importante a nivel internacional, Fitur. Ante la presencia de autoridades locales y supramunicipales, profesionales relacionados con el mundo del turismo, así como numerosos medios de comunicación, se presentaba en la sala de prensa del stand del Patronato de Turismo de la Costa del Sol, el spot "Cinco sentidos, Doce meses, Mil razones", con el que Manilva ha mostrado al mundo, que nuestra localidad va más allá del sol y playa. Durante los casi diez minutos de duración de este anuncio, realizado desde RTV Manilva, los presentes pudieron conocer ordenadas de manera mensual, cada una de las actividades de ocio y cultura de las que se puede disfrutar a lo largo del año. No en vano, Manilva, hace gala de ser uno de los municipios de la Costa del Sol, que más iniciativas ofrece al público que nos visita, contando además en su calendario con tres festividades catalogadas como de singularidad turística en la provincia de Málaga, San Juan, La Luna Llena y La Vendimia. El edil de turismo, Diego Urieta, que intervino tras la presentación del video, invitó a los presentes a conocer Manilva, ya que según dijo es un municipio que ofrece además de unas espectaculares playas, algunas virgenes, una reserva ecológica única en la provincia, una gastronomía catalogada de muy alta calidad, un patrimonio historico inigualable, así como un sinfín de actividades, no solo a lo largo del verano, sino durante los doce meses.

El primer edil manilveño, Mario Jiménez, tomó la palabra a continuación, para agradecer la gran acogida de esta presentación y resumió las veleidades que ofrece el término, ofreciendo además los datos de ocupación del pasado año, que arrojan unas cifras espectaculares más allá de la temporada estival. Romper con la estacionalidad es sin duda, uno de los principales retos, no solo de Manilva, sino de todos los pueblos de la Costa del Sol, asunto que apuntó también la presidenta de la Junta de Andalucía, Susana Diaz, en su visita a nuestro stand. Diaz ponía de manifiesto que hace falta incentivar el turismo fuera de los meses veraniegos. De hecho la presidenta resaltó la importancia de poner en marcha proyectos tales como el simulador del Golf Indoor con el que cuenta el hotel Manilva Sun, único en España y que atraerá sin duda, a un turismo con un alto poder adquisitivo. Agustín Vargas, en su paso por Fitur mantuvo varios encuentros con profesionales, autoridades y diferentes colectivos. El responsable de fiestas en la localidad, visitó junto al resto de ediles, el stand del colectivo LGTBI, para invitarles al Manilva Pride 2018 que se celebrará durante el mes de junio. Este evento que alcanza su segunda edición también está siendo promocionado en fitur. El concejal de medios de comunicación y relaciones institucionales, Francisco Miguel Álvareez,agradeció la labor de los medios locales, no solo con su presencia en la feria durante estos días, sino en la elaboración de los distintos videos promocionales que se presentarán en la feria. Además el edil aprovechará la ocasión para mantener

contactos con representantes de distintas instituciones. Sin duda uno de los grandes protagonistas de la jornada, fue el vino de nuestra tierra. Muchos hicieron cola para poder degustar el semidulce elaborado en Manilva, que este año ha sido elegido para representar al municipio. La caras de placer de aquellos que lo cataban, daban buena muestra de la nota otorgada a este vino bañado por nuestro sol, que no dejó indifente a nadie. Y es que ya se vislumbra un gran futuro a los viñedos manilveños, cuyos caldos empiezan ya a despuntar fuera de nuestras fronteras, pero de eso le seguiremos hablando a lo largo de estos días, ya que la agenda prevista incluye la presentación del Chan de Rosas "Aires de Manilva" que ya se comercializa en lugares tan distintos y distantes, como Brasil, Japón, China o Inglaterra, y que ha sido incluido en la revista para profesionales del sector "Bodeboca" que cuenta con 700.000 suscriptores.

One of the biggest and most important tourism exhibition in Europe, Manilva attended as part of the Costa del Sol Tourist Board stand and made a number of presentations during the 5-day event one of which was entitled “Five Senses, Twelve Months, A Thousand Reasons” which emphasised the point that there is more to Manilva than the sunshine and the beach. During the ten minute video, produced by RTV Manilva, the publicised the leisure and cultural events and activities available every month throughout the year, including the San Juan, Full Moon, and Grape Harvest festivals. The Councillor for Tourism, Diego Urieta, spoke about Manilva’s historic heritage, the ecological reserve, the gastronomy, as well as the endless activities beyond the summer season. The Mayor, Mario Jiménez, talked about Manilva’s tourist occupation

for the past year which exceed all previous records, but could still be improved out of season. During a visit to the stand the President of the Andalucian Regional Government, Susana Diaz, spoke of the necessity to encourage tourism outside of the Summer Months, one such initiative being Manilva’s proposed Indoor Golf Simulator set to be installed at the Hotel Manilva Sun, which is the first such facility in Spain. The Councillor for Sports and Youth, Agustin Vargas, took the opportunity to arrange a number of meetings with professionals, authorities and other entities. The Mayor and Councillors also visited the LGBT collective stand where an invitation was extended to Manilva Pride 2018, the second edition of this event which was also promoted at Fitur. The Councillor for Media and Institutional Relations, Francisco Miguel Alvarez, thanked Manilva’s local media for the various promotional videos and publications produced for the event. Creating quite a stir at Fitur was Manilva’s locally produced wines. Many lined up to taste the wines on offer, all of whom were left impressed by the experience. The local wines are beginning to make a name for themselves, wines such as Chan de Rosas "Aires de Manilva" that being exported overseas to such places as Brazil, Japan, China and England, and has been featured in the industry publication “Bodeboca” which boasts some 700,000 subscribers.

Presentada la primera fase del proyecto de la senda peatonal Manilva-Sabinillas En la mañana de hoy es ha llevado a cabo el acto de presentación de la Primera Fase del Proyecto de la Senda Peatonal en la A-377 Manilva-Sabinillas. El equipo redactor de la Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental, los técnicos Francisco Molina y Eva Vedia, ha realizado una exposición a la Corporación municipal ofreciendo las características de este proyecto. El alcalde de Manilva, Mario Jiménez, ha estado acompañado por los concejales del Equipo de Gobierno, Antonio Barragán, Marcos Ruiz, responsable de la oficina técnica de la Mancomunidad, Francisco Miguel Álvarez y Eva Galindo. María Muñoz representó al PSOE. También estuvieron presentes los técnicos municipal, Antonio Parra, Ernesto Vega y Nuria Marín. En cuanto a las características del trazado, esta primera fase tendrá una longitud de 1.060 metros y comprenderá desde Sabinillas hasta el restaurante conocido como la bodeguita.

The execution period for the project is 4 months and has a budget of € 1,079,273.91.

The route, for both pedestrians and cyclists, will tarmacked, with the installation of lighting, road signs, safety railing, anti-erosion treatment for the slopes. The second phase, which is already being drawn up, will include the remaining area to Manilva village. And there will then be a third phase that will go to the other side of the road between Manilva Grill and Autos Serrano.

La policía local detiene a dos bandas que se dedicaban a robar

a Policía Local de Manilva ha actuado de forma contundente y resolutiva

ante los últimos robos que se han llevado a cabo en algunas zonas de Sabinillas.

Desde la jefatura se ha informado que se han detenido dos bandas integradas por magrebies, quienes estaban cometiendo delitos de robo. Una de ellas, desarticulada el pasado sábado, tenía un modus operandi basados en la recopilación de datos de inmobiliarias y sustraían bienes de las viviendas vacías. Por otra parte, en la misma noche de ayer se detuvieron a varios menores que estaban robando, impidiendo así que llevarán a cabo finalmente su propósito. Dos actuaciones que el alcalde de Manilva, Mario Jiménez, además de dar la enhorabuena por el gran trabajo desarrollado a los agentes locales, considera importante para seguir mejorando en materia de seguridad.

El próximo 3 de febrero se realizará el V Torneo Internacional de Esgrima en el Castillo de la Duquesa El Club Internacional de esgrima “AndaluZía” junto con el Ayuntamiento de Manilva, Concejalía de Deportes, Cultura y Asuntos Sociales organizarán el próximo 3 de Febrero el V Torneo Internacional Villa de Manilva. Se esperan más de 100 participantes de las principales provincias andaluzas y colegios de la zona que tomarán parte en categorías de menores de 8,10, 12, 15 años, adultos y veteranos. La competición de esgrima deportiva comenzará a las 10 de la mañana. A partir de las 12.00 horas tendrá lugar una exhibición de esgrima escénica, una modalidad de esgrima que rememora los antiguos duelos. Recoge los conocimientos, técnicas, historia, vestimenta y acciones utilizadas en escena, teatro, cine, etc. Pone de manifiesto toda la tradición de la esgrima española que se realizaba en castillos como el Castillo de la Duquesa y a la vez un espectáculo muy interesante.

Los muros y estancias de este monumento se poblarán de niños y mayores que disfrutarán no solo de una bonita jornada de esgrima sino de talleres de manualidades, pintacaras y la competición de miniziorros con la participación de los niños más pequeños. Para contribuir a la celebración de los 250 años de vida del Castillo, en la sala de exposiciones se exhibirán una muestra de fotografías con título:“La persistencia del Movimiento”. Incluirán objetos antiguos y fotografías artísticas de esgrima deportiva y escénica realizadas por los prestigiosos fotógrafos Arturo Umbría, José Mari Moya y José Luis Bollar. Esta interesante muestra proviene de una exposición homóloga que ha tenido lugar en el museo Cruz Herrera de Cádiz con una magnífica acogida por la calidad de sus piezas. Abierto el plazo de inscripción para el curso de socorrismo y desa Dentro del Plan de Formación municipal FORMA-T, puesto en marcha por las delegaciones de Fomento de Empleo y Participación Ciudadana, dirigidas por Marcos Ruiz y Patricia Recio, se informa que continúa abierto el plazo para la realización del curso de Dinamizador Turístico. Con una duración de 35 horas el Curso de Dinamizador Turístico se llevará a cabo en el Centro de Formación y Empleo, ubicado frente a Correos en Sabinillas. Este se desarrollará del 12 al 14 de febrero y del 19 al 21 del mis-

mo mes, en horario de nueve de la mañana a tres menos cuarto de la tarde. Con un precio de 35 euros, el plazo de inscripción finalizará el 6 de febrero. Por otra parte, a este se suma el de Socorrismo y Desa, cuyo plazo finaliza el 26 de febrero. Una formación que tiene una duración de 150 horas, de las cuales setenta y ocho horas y media se harán efectiva de manera online. El precio de este curso es de 120 euros, y las practicas se realizaran en la Ciudad Deportiva de

Sabinillas, los fines de semana del 3 al 25 de marzo en horario de nueve a dos de la tarde y de tres a siete y media de la tarde. Cabe recordar la importancia de este curso es imprescindible, para poder realizar trabajos en verano tanto en las piscinas de las urbanizaciones como en los servicios municipales de playas, en el Ayuntamiento de Manilva. for Tourism Development. With a duration of 35 hours, the Tourist Dynamics Course will be held at the Training and Employment Centre, located opposite the post office in Sabinillas. This will be held from the 12th to 14th February and from the 19th to 21st of the same month, from 9 am to 2.45 pm. The price is 35 euros, and the registration period will end on February 6. There is also the Lifeguard and First Aid course, the registration deadline for which ends on February 26. The course is 150 hours, of which seventy-eight and a half hours will be effective online. Desde Manilva se crea el Cycling Tour Costa del Sol 2018

El Cycling Tour Costa del Sol 2018 inicia su actividad con la única intención de promover y dar a conocer las mejores rutas cicloturistas de la Costa del Sol en Mountain Bike. Mediante la ayuda y colaboración de diferentes grupos de cada municipio se realizará 1 ruta de Mountain Bike al mes durante todo el año 2018, descansando únicamente en el mes de Septiembre. Es una iniciativa promovida por el Club Ciclista Manilva y que pretende promover el turismo deportivo por toda la Costa del Sol mediante la bicicleta de Montaña. Al proyecto se han unido diferentes clubs de los municipios

seleccionados y en breve se iniciarán una ronda de contactos con los diferentes Ayuntamientos con el fin de encontrar una colaboración que permita por ejemplo que estos deportistas puedan ducharse en algún polideportivo de la localidad. Se han buscado rutas aptas para todos los aficionados que sean capaces de mantener una velocidad media de unos 10Km/h y siendo lo más destacado de las mismas su alto nivel turístico y paisajístico. The Costa del Sol Cycling Tour 2018 is put together by Manilva Cycling Club The Costa del Sol Cycling Tour 2018 has been created with the intention of promoting and publicising the best mountain bike cycling routes on the Costa del Sol. Through the help and collaboration of different groups in each municipality, a mountain bike route will be organised for each month throughout the 2018, with just a break in September. The initiative has been put together by the Club Ciclista Manilva cycling club which aims to promote mountain bike sports tourism throughout the Costa del Sol. Different clubs in the selected

municipalities have joined the project and discussions are being held with the different Town Halls to obtain collaboration that allows for example that these athletes can take a shower in a local sports centre, etc. The club has researched suitable routes for all mountain bike enthusiasts who are capable of maintaining an average speed of about 10 kph and which take in the most outstanding sights and landscapes. ¿QUE HACER SI TU INQUILINO NO PAGA LA RENTA?

i dispones de una vivienda alquilada, puedes tener el problema que el inquilino deje de abonar la renta. ¿Qué puedes hacer en ese caso?. Una cosa es retrasarse unos días en el pago del alquiler y otra muy distinta dejar de pagar más de un mes de alquiler. La Ley de Arrendamientos Urbanos (LAU) menciona varios motivos por los que el propietario/arrendador puede solicitar la resolución del contrato de arrendamiento y, por tanto, el desahucio.

al inquilino el pago de lo adeudado en un plazo de treinta días y comunicándole la intención de iniciar acciones legales en caso de no pagar. Si aún así el inquilino no paga, no queda más remedio que ir a juicio. En ningún caso se deben tomar medidas como cambiar la cerradura o cortar los suministros (luz, agua, etc.), pues puede el inquilino denunciar al arrendador por coacciones. El propietario/arrendador podrá reclamar judicialmente varias cosas: 1. Que se le devuelva su vivienda (resolución del contrato). 2. Que se le devuelva su vivienda y además reclamar las deudas. 3. Reclamar exclusivamente la deuda generada sin reclamar la devolución de la vivienda, bien porque no desea rescindir el contrato, bien porque el inquilino ya ha devuelto las llaves y ya sólo es necesario reclamar la deuda.

El desahucio es un proceso especial a través del cual el propietario/arrendador solicita en el juzgado que se declare la resolución del contrato por impago de renta y que le sea devuelto el inmueble alquilado. Además, se puede pedir en el mismo proceso la reclamación de las rentas que se deben. Pero antes de iniciar el proceso de desahucio, es necesario requerir de pago al inquilino, por teléfono o por escrito y si no responde se tendrá que realizar una comunicación a través de Buro fax requiriendo Lo más común es la solicitud

de resolución del contrato y reclamación de las deudas en el mismo proceso. Los desahucios se solucionan en un juicio verbal. Si el inquilino se opone a la demanda, se celebrará juicio y el proceso terminará en Sentencia. En los demás casos, el proceso terminará con Decreto que da por finalizado el proceso de desahucio, donde se incluyen las rentas que van a vencer hasta que se produzca la posesión del inmueble. Con posterioridad a la Resolución (sentencia o Decreto) hay que ejecutar el lanzamiento, es decir, si el inquilino no se ha ido hasta ese momento, entonces hay que desalojar el inmueble que se mantiene ocupado para que el arrendador pueda recuperarlo. Posteriormente se solicita la ejecución, es decir, para embargar bienes al inquilino condenado a pagar las deudas debidas. Por ello, es importante contar con un abogado experto que le asesore y le gestione su reclamación. WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TENANT DOES NOT PAY THE RENT?

f you have a rented out a property and your tenant stops paying the rent then you have a problem. What can you do in this case? Its one thing when the rental payment is delayed for a few days but quite another when the tenant stops paying for more than a month. The Urban Leasing Law (LAU) mentions several reasons why the owner / landlord can request the termination of the lease contract and, therefore, the eviction. Eviction is a special process through which the landlord asks the court to declare the termination of the contract due to nonpayment of rent, and requests that the rented property be returned. In addition, in the same process, you can claim payment of the rent that is owed. But before initiating the process of eviction, you must first write to or telephone the tenant to ask for payment of the overdue amounts and if the tenant does not respond, a formal written communication would have to be made by Buro fax, notifying the tenant that the debt must be paid within a term of thirty days and also communicating the intention to initiate legal actions in case of non-payment. If the tenant still does not pay, there is no choice but to go to court. In no case should measures be taken such as changing a lock or cutting off supplies (electricity, water, etc.), as the tenant may legally report the landlord for coercion. Review Isabella May has managed to write a story that flows with ease, is funny in so many scenes and has such well-drawn characters that the reader can imagine them immediately. Yet under the banter and “Sophie-Kinsella” style prose, there’s a very disturbing undertone: an abusive marriage. Kate, the main character lives, on one hand, a charmed life: travelling to all parts of the world for her company and having fun with her colleagues and the odd flirt or two. On the other hand, when she arrives home there’s her psycho husband waiting for her. Why didn’t she just run? Believe me, it’s not as easy as that and Isabella has explored this diabolical part of our society with skill, sensitivity and understanding.

Primeras Horas No es mi vida la que avanza en un juego inútil de palabras... En estas horas primeras invoco el sueño, ardo, peregrino, y me amortiguo en tu falda... Para que estas cenizas se alcen a tus techos, imagínate, lo que tuve de muerte, para llegar a tu frente alimentada de fuego, imagínate cuánto me abracé de amor. Las voces, no son las auténticas palabras. El corazón, inmerso, sale de esa piel del silencio, y la tierra ahora es su testigo: por cada trigo y lomo se despereza mi fatiga, quiero verter mi noche oscura en los latidos de la mañana. Contigo arrimé la rosa a los cañaverales; y yo grité: Soy este hombre que avanza como una primavera que destrona a la lluvia dormida entre maizales. Tu cuerpo está escondido y me toca su invisible postura (si yo fuera la noche y la tierra contigo), y hablarme tú sin voz, hablarme como a nadie para que nadie pudiera jamás diseñar el significado de las palabras auténticas, y sentir de nuevo las horas primeras, las primeras horas de la sangre y la playa. Hablarme, sí, hablarme, para que disecadas las manos volvieran a abrirse al tacto de la aurora: hallar así el verso escondido en mis pasiones.

Llega a la sede y allí, encuentra alivio al hablar contigo. Quizás ella haya menospreciado las terapias alternativas, por motivos también religiosos. Ahora es necesario que continúe algún tiempo recibiendo ayuda. Anteriormente, consideraba que en ese lugar, en esa casa situada en un valle a las afueras de la ciudad se escondía el manantial de la eternidad, la felicidad plena. No sé, esa es la impresión que tengo. El sectarismo es sortilegio para las almas. (Me da miedo pensarlo, pero en el fondo todos estamos un poco obstruidos en el gran tema del amor. Pero el amor no destruye si se mantiene en la esperanza). Malo, muy protervo era ese individuo que sedujo a mi hermana y la convenció para entrar en esa comunidad. Y lo peor, pobres muchachos, es que ella impulsó a sus hijos a ceremonias repletas de donativos y embauques que nada tienen que ver con el espíritu libre que vuela adonde quiere. Aquello era una intención perniciosa controlada por un grupo de individuos que se enriquecían a través de la buena voluntad, la desesperación y el desconsuelo de muchos. Te preguntaría cómo la encuentras ahora, pero es demasiado pronto, lleva poco tiempo asistiendo a las reuniones de la asociación; mas tengo la fe de que se recuperará antes de lo que imaginamos todos. Ella es fuerte. Ha hecho grandes heladas en el país de su corazón, pero la luz y el calor volverán poco a poco a ella. Sí, y, aunque no lo creas, su vida se complicó con los que convivía, con sus mejores amigos y su propia familia que también se había incorporado al clan, prefiero llamar así a esa comunidad. Después de salir dudó muchas veces de sí misma, de su integridad como mujer, esposa, amiga y madre, porque le retiraron –ilusos de la verdad–, el saludo y el habla, tanto es así, que hasta ahora, sus terapias las hacía personalmente hablando con su gato. Ella decidió salir de esa hermandad y, contradicción terrible, fue despreciada por los hermanos. Ella ha venido a la asociación buscando alivio y le tendimos los brazos, y gracias al haberte conocido, se está curando. Te digo que a mi hermana, el haber permanecido tantos años en esa secta le ha dejado cicatrices inmensas. Demasiado fuerte

Necesito Un Beso Necesito un beso del viento o del agua, o de la noche intransigente que habita en la piel cansada de mi alma. Un beso más allá de la piel de tu bálago donde el grano inmaduro no supo contenerse. Pero yo no quiero ser el hombre ese que triste pasa... Necesito un beso de tus palabras, tan solo un beso de la voz de tus ramas, oh árbol, encina que al aire aclama. Y el aire le responde con un eco de su vida: Necesito un beso, un beso de los ríos de tu boca donde la última pasión desarbola y queda como un pájaro en la noche volando por las hojas de tus sombras.

es para no haberse vuelto loca. Ahora para sus propios amigos, que aún siguen en la secta, y otros familiares míos, es una contagiada, una apóstata, por no decir, aunque a mí no me suene mejor esa palabra, que la tratan como a una traidora o una renegada. Es increíble el cambio que noto cada día en ella. Ahora es más, ¿cómo decir?, más accesible. Antes no lograba hablar con ella ni cinco minutos sin que nuestro diálogo terminara en discusión. Sí, la notaba parafrasear con anhelo en lenguaje escueto, conmovedor y susceptible, lo que para ella era el gran logro de su agrupación religiosa. Alguna vez le dije que las mentes vulneradas son fáciles de captar. Su hijo, mi sobrino, murió en accidente de tráfico siendo este muy joven. Pues ella me dijo en una ocasión, que Pedro, el líder de la secta, le había prometido un encuentro con su hijo el día que comenzara justamente el otoño, y que eran muy relativos, tanto día como hora exactas, dependiendo de la conjunción de los planetas, pero para ello debía, por supuesto, ingresar en la comunidad, un regalo de no menos de cien euros, algo que reclamaban los espíritus para la construcción de un nuevo templo. Aquello fue lo que me dio la certeza de la trampa horrenda adonde había caído mi hermana y parte de la familia y del fraude tan escabroso al que estaban sometidos. Todos, creyentes o no, en momentos trascendentales, precisamos aferrarnos a algo, pero no podemos caer, digo yo, por carencias de solidez y orden, en seguir a mentores (que nos religuen) hasta idolatrarlos, olvidándonos de nosotros mismos, de pasar por etapas de la vida sin ser vividas con la autenticidad y dignidad precisas, y olvidarnos de lo principal que el hombre posee: la capacidad de ser libre y elegir por sí mismo, aunque se equivoque, caiga y se vuelva a levantar, pero por él mismo y por su propia esperanza en la verdad del Amor en mayúsculas, Amor que todo lo comprende, lo admite, lo respeta y lo restablece porque es mayor que nosotros mismos.

Into the New Year with ICE The end of 2017 was hectic. November’s mystery trip took us to the Aviation Museum at Malaga airport and Plaza Mayor for some early Christmas shopping. The Christmas theme then took over with a special festive quiz, a Christmas lunch for 80 at the clubhouse expertly prepared by our own catering manager Brenda and her team, and a lunch out at Mini India. On Christmas morning the Club was open for a buffet lunch and a Secret Santa. In 2017 we decided to reintroduce

the New Year’s Eve party, and with dancing to Daniela, with cabaret numbers and line dancing thrown in, it was a great success. We expect this to become a regular event! As we’re still in party mood we held our Welcome Back Party on January 27th. This event is kindly sponsored by Maria Read of First Assistance Costa del Sol s.l., who arranged for live music by Ron and Mark, and they had us on our feet all evening! For our next party we have to wait till February 10th, the night of our

Caribbean Carnival, with live music from a Cuban band. Get your carnival costumes ready! Other February events will be traditional pancake races round (not in!) the pool, followed by pancake eating on – you’ve guessed it – Pancake Day, and a visit to the Victoria Brewery in Malaga, followed by lunch and shopping. In response to a tragic situation earlier in the year a number of local residents have come together to form the BuddyUp (Manilva) Community Support Group, a ‘befriending’ group to provide support, comfort and a point of contact for people facing a variety of challenges. The BuddyUp group is coordinated by Marguerite Wilkins, and already has a number of members signed up. Working closely with other local charities and organisations, including the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George, Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva, Citizens’ Advice, Cudeca, Social Services, etc., the group aims to provide support and advice for the elderly, disabled, those who have recently lost a partner, single parents, divorcees, the socially excluded, people that are new to the area, in fact anyone who might need someone to talk to or just pointing in the right direction.

BuddyUp volunteers work in pairs and have access to a wide range of resources to call upon depending on the needs of those they are assisting. Citizens Advice Bureau Spain weekly surgery The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George is hosting a weekly surgery by Citizens Advice Bureau Spain every Wednesday morning from 10.30 am to 1 pm. The surgery will be held at the St George Charity’s new shop in Calle Aurora de Albornoz, Punta Almina, Sabinillas, and is part of the Charity’s community support programme.

If you would like to see one of CAB Spain’s advisers then pop along to the shop on Wednesday morning, although it is advisable to book an appointment as it can sometimes be busy. All consultations are free but CAB Spain is funded by donations, so if you feel that their advice has been valuable then please make a donation in the tin provided.

Dear , I am writing to ask you to support Glyn Davies MP in the second reading of his Votes for Life bill, which is scheduled for 23 February 2018. As you know, the pledge to grant votes for life to British citizens resident abroad was included in the 2010 and 2015 Conservative manifestos, and is even more relevant with Chris Skidmore’s launch of the Democratic Engagement Plan which aims to tackle democratic exclusion, outlines plans to increase participation by under-registered groups, and identifies barriers faced by specific demographics. 2018 is also the year in which we - as a democracy - are celebrating the centenary of women's right to vote. "Votes for Life" is a critical issue for UK citizens resident abroad and for democracy itself. It is estimated that there are over one million Britons overseas who have lost their voting rights. Being denied the right to vote in recent general elections has had a huge impact on the lives of longterm non-resident British citizens. There are many democracies around the world who allow their citizens to vote and some even have specific constituencies solely representing those citizens. Surely the Mother of Parliaments should do the same? Many British citizens living abroad still have close family ties to the UK and many still own property and/or pay taxes there. Those who have contributed to the wealth of the UK are quite rightly angry and concerned at being denied their democratic right to vote. September 2017 saw the formation of a locally based choir created for those of us who love to sing, having been a choir member previously or not. The "Love to Sing" choir is multi national and at present has approximately 50 members. We meet every Wednesday evening between 7-9pm at Ringos bar, Pueblo Mexicano to rehearse. The choir is extremely lucky to have Shirley Helleur as our musical director, she is an extremely experienced musician and has a wealth of expertise in the business

of turning "bath time buskers" into reasonable singers! Throughout the year the choir will perform a repertoire of songs at various events and at each performance any donations collected will be in aid of St. George's charity in order to support the local community and those in need. We shall look forward to welcoming anyone who would like to come along and join in as meeting people, making new friends and having fun are an important part of our choir. 29th January 2018 – Optical group Specsavers have announced that they have raised €6,107.30 for the charity Fundación ONCE para la Atención de Personas con Sordoceguera (FOAPS) between July and December 2017. José Ángel Moral-Tajadura, Retail and Business Development Manager for Specsavers Spain presented a cheque to Marcelo Rosado, ONCE representative for Andalucía, Ceuta and Melilla and José Miguel Luque Gómez, Director of ONCE for the areas of Málaga, Córdoba y Melilla at the ONCE offices in Malaga. This will fund 407 hours of interpreting for deaf and blind people in Spain in 2018. As well as funds, the campaign raised awareness of the issues that the deaf-blind face and the excellent work that FOAPS does. Specsavers are delighted to have been able to support the charity in this way. FOAPS is a charitable organisation formed in 2007 by leading Spanish charity ONCE to develop programmes to help deaf-blind people. Llega la época de la orugas Thaumetopoea pityocampa, o sea, la procesionaria, que estas semanas están saliendo de sus nidos de nuevo, ya que el clima se calienta y aproximamos la primavera. Estas orugas podrían estar fuera ahora o es posible que no vayan a verlas hasta abril, dependiendo de dónde se encuentre. Lo principal a recordar es que estén atentos en su búsqueda y que tengan cuidado en zonas donde haya muchos pinos. Mantenga sus mascotas alejadas y no trate de tocarlos o manejarlos. Los pelos blancos con los están cubiertos los nidos contienen una fuerte sustancia irritante y tóxica. Esta forma de pasear en fila es una estrategia de protección que da la impresión de una serpiente para disuadir a los posibles depredadores, como las aves, por ejemplo. Si alguna parte de la fila de las orugas se altera se envía un mensaje a todos los demás y liberan su sustancia irritante, desde los finos pelos que cubren los cuerpos de las orugas, hacia el intruso. Esta irritante no es muy diferente a la quemadura de ortigas, inicialmente, aunque algunas personas tienen una reacción alérgica alta y pueden necesitar tratamiento médico. En el caso de los bebés y los perros este veneno puede ser fatal. Los nidos de esta oruga, al estar lleno de este irritante, las personas que trabajan o que pasan por debajo de los árboles con nidos pueden notar, como mínimo, una ligera irritación ocular y/o problemas respiratorios

debido al polvo flotando en el aire. ¡Algunas personas han perdido un ojo y algunas animales han fallecido debido al efecto de este toxico, en los casos de un contacto más intenso!

El mejor consejo para evitar problemas con ellos será mantenerse alejado de ellos y sus nidos, si usted tiene un árbol de pino con un nido debe buscar la ayuda de un profesional.

Time to remember the procession caterpillars, Thaumetopoea pityocampa, as they are coming out again, as the weather warms up and Spring approaches. These caterpillars are

starting to come down from their nests in pine trees now or you may not see them until April depending upon where you are. The main thing to remember is to be on the lookout and to be careful. Keep your pets away and do not try to handle them. The white hairs are covered with and contain a very strong irritating toxic substance. This marching off in lines is a protective strategy giving the impression of a snake to deter would-be predators, birds for example. If any part of the caterpillar train is disturbed a message is

sent to everybody on board and an irritant is released from the fine hairs covering the caterpillars’ bodies towards the intruder. This irritant is not initially dissimilar to the burn of stinging nettles but it is much more noxious, some people have a severe reaction and may need medical treatment. In the case of young babies and dogs this irritant can be fatal. The nests themselves are full of this irritant, individuals working or passing underneath trees with nests may notice mild to severe eye irritations and/or respiratory problems, in the mildest of cases due to slight irritation from the powder drifting through the air. People have lost an eye and animals have died in cases of more severe exposure! The best advice to avoid problems with them stay away from them and their nests, if you have a pine tree with a nest seek out the help of a professional.

Now there is good news for those who fear it might be too late in life to improve their fitness People into late middle age can reverse or reduce the risk of heart failure caused by decades of sedentary living by exercising, a study has found. But there is a catch - it takes two years of aerobic exercise, four to five days a week, researchers said.

'Sweet spot' The study, published in the journal Circulation, analysed the hearts of 53 adults aged 45-64 who were healthy but had no history of exercising regularly. Research has shown that sedentary behaviours - such as sitting or reclining for long periods of time - increase the risk of heart disease. The study's participants were divided into two groups, with one following an aerobic exercise routine that progressed in intensity over the two years and another doing yoga, balance training and weight training three times a week, also for two years. The aerobic exercise group showed an 18% improvement in their maximum oxygen intake during exercise and a more than 25% improvement in "plasticity" in the left ventricular muscle of the heart - both markers of a healthier heart. However, the benefits were not seen in the second group.

"We found what we believe to be the optimal dose of the right kind of exercise, which is four to five times a week, and the 'sweet spot' in time, when the heart risk from a lifetime of sedentary behaviour can be improved - which is late-middle age. "The result was a reversal of decades of a sedentary lifestyle on the heart for most of the study participants." Participants exercised generally in 30-minute sessions, plus a warm-up and cool-down. Their routine included: One high-intensity aerobic session, such as four-by-four interval training where participants did four sets of four minutes of exercise at 95% of their maximum heart rate followed by three minutes of active recovery at 60-75% peak heart rate Two or three days a week of moderate intensity exercise (where exercisers sweat but can still carry on a conversation)

which high intensity exercise was included. Dr Levine stated that the take-home message from the research is that exercise needs to be a part of people's personal hygiene, like teeth brushing. "It's not something that gets added on to the end of the day: You brush your teeth, you change your clothes, you eat food and drink water. "You do these things for personal hygiene. Exercise is equally important. You need to find ways to incorporate it into your daily activities." Dr Richard Siow, vice-dean for the faculty of life sciences and medicine at King's College London and director of ageing research at King's, said the study was valuable in that shows we can delay cardiovascular ageing. He said it provided further evidence that "we can, in a way, rejuvenate or make the cells in the heart, and also in the blood vessels for that matter, resemble younger cells through an exercise programme". "I think that's a very important take-home message for those of us who may have a doom and gloom view there's nothing we can do about it. Yes there is, we can start by getting off the couch to have a more active lifestyle."

improved heart function facilitates blood flow to the brain. "The wider ramifications of this study for healthy ageing need to be explored," he said. Previous studies have shown improvements in heart elasticity in young people after a year of training, but little change if the training was started after the age of 65, the report's authors said. They said the aerobic exercise regimen should be started before the age of 65 when the heart appears to retain "plasticity" and the ability to remodel itself. Dr Levine said his team would next look at whether the same kind of improvements shown in the study can be made in people at high risk of heart failure, such as those with high blood pressure or diabetes and those who are obese. However, researchers said there were a couple of limitations to the study. One was that volunteers were willing and able to participate in an intensive exercise regimen, which may not be the case for the general adult population. Another potential limitation was that most of the study's participants were white and it was not clear whether the results would apply to other racial groups, researchers said. It also does not mention diet or other factors that can affect health, such as pollution. "It needs to be taken into the context of a healthy lifestyle as well," .

Professional golf heads to the Costa del Sol for the winter season It was a fantastic season caddying for some incredible golfers, such as Oliver Wilson, (Alfred Dunhill Champion and former Ryder cup player) and Johan Edfors (4 times European Tour winner), to name a few. My highlight of last year, my moment of absolute euphoria that washed away the pain of all the missed cuts and unlucky bounces, was caddying for Alfie Plant, The Open Silver medal winner and European amateur Champion. Together we made the cut at my home event on the European Tour schedule, the Sergio Garcia Valderrama Masters. The winter months signal the end of the European golfing season. A time when all professional golfers (and caddies), head home for the holidays. Some will have their heads held high, excited at the prospect of stepping up a level into the higher and more lucrative golfing league. Others who were not so fortunate, will use the winter months to evaluate their game, working on their weaknesses and building their strengths, preparing

to hopefully grind out a better season next year. It is during this time that some golfers fade away and don’t return next season. With more missed cuts and no pay checks coming in, players are forced to decide whether they want to fight for their place back on tour or choose a new profession. One that can actually pay the bills. Without sponsors and support, some of the greatest golfing talent can slip through our fingers. To be a professional golfer is a full time occupation. A true professional is up before sunrise to work on fitness, and uses every daylight hour to become the best they can be. Lucky for me I call Andalucía my home and with the weather in our region generally better than the rest of Europe, it is no wonder that professional golfers head to the Costa del Sol to train for the winter. Along with hosting professional amateur events, such as the Andalusian amateur Championships, our area is also home to the Gecko Tour. Now into

its seventh season, the Gecko tour, along with our amazing courses and fantastic climate, attract some of Europe’s finest golfers. Waiting for their respective pro tours to start, the top professionals know that in order to excel in the world of professional golf, you need to practice and play all year round. Representing Spain, Oliver played brilliantly and finished the two nine hole rounds with a total +6, putting him Joint 5th out of a field of 26 of the best of his age.

The Mental Caddie After publishing The Mental Caddie, (available on Amazon) I was inundated with people asking me if the book was about me being a crazy or mental caddie, knowing that I work as a golf coach and professional tour caddie. Others asked if the book was written only for caddies and professional golfers to read. I had to constantly explain to people that the book was written in such a way that nongolfers could enjoy the read. The reader gets to find out what goes through the mind of a professional golfer during a tournament. How do the player’s mentally prepare themselves for a competitive round of golf and how do they train and practice to achieve the best results

possible? Being a full time caddie I spend a lot of time around the world’s finest professional golfers, watching and learning. I pass on all the knowledge I have gathered to my young amateur golfers, who also hope to make it one day in the world of pro golf. I teach these young impressionable minds with stories and anecdotes, through humour and fun. My pearls of wisdom and how I delivered them while caddying, have produced some amazing stories of miracles and success. That is what my book is all about. It was written to inspire people, to give the reader a feel for my passion and love for the mental game of golf. A saddening statistic in the world of golf is that there is as many people a year who take up the game, as there is who leave it. I have heard stories of people going for a first lesson in golf and getting so disheartened that they can’t hit the ball, they never try again. The coaches they went to, broke their

golfing spirit before even teaching them passion and creativity. I challenged a few non-golfer friends of mine to read The Mental Caddie and as I hoped, they all wanted to try out the cerebral sport. Inspired by the opportunity to welcome newcomers to the sport of golf, I developed a teaching/training programme that will give newcomers and mid to high handicap golfers a complete new way to look at golf. My backwards golf teaching, combines the elements of mental strength and physical ability. In only a few short hours, a complete novice can start thinking like a pro, using practice drills used by the top players on tour. The Backwards golf program creates a passion in the new player, an instant understanding of the mental state of mind you need to be in when playing golf. My backwards golf teaching method helps new players build their unique swing that fits their body size and flexibility.
