Cuenta la tradición que los monjes Carmelitas, que habitaron las colinas del Monte Carmel y adoraban a la Virgen María que se apareció allí, fueron forzados a huir por una fuerza invasora Sarracena. Durante esta huida, la Virgen se les apareció de nuevo y les prometió ser su “Estrella del Mar” y guiarlos hasta un lugar seguro. Desde entonces, ha sido la santa patrona de los marineros, y como tal, la Virgen del Carmen es reverenciada entre las comunidades pescadoras locales del sur de España. En su día, el 16 de julio, la Virgen del Carmen sale en una gran procesión religiosa por los diferentes pueblos de la costa sur de España a las playas, donde se embarca en uno de los botes de pesca y procesiona por la costa para disfrute de aquellos que la ven en la playa.

Tradition has it that the Carmelite monks, who inhabited the slopes of Mount Carmel and worshipped the Virgin Mary who had appeared there in a vision, were forced to flee by a Saracen invasion force. During this eviction the Virgin appeared to them again and promised to be their 'Star of the Sea' and to guide them to safety. Since then she has been the patron saint of mariners and, as such, the Virgen del Carmen is revered amongst the local fishing communities of southern Spain. On her feast day, the 16th July, the Virgen del Carmen is carried in a grand religious procession through the various towns along the Southern coast of Spain to the beaches where she is embarked onto one of the fishing boats and paraded up and down the coast for all those gathered on the beach to see.
