Tradition has it that the Carmelite monks, who inhabited the slopes of Mount Carmel and worshipped the Virgin Mary who had appeared there in a vision, were forced to flee by a Saracen invasion force. During this eviction the Virgin appeared to them again and promised to be their 'Star of the Sea' and to guide them to safety. Since then she has been the patron saint of mariners and, as such, the Virgen del Carmen is revered amongst the local fishing communities of southern Spain. On her feast day, the 16th July, the Virgen del Carmen is carried in a grand religious procession through the various towns along the Southern coast of Spain to the beaches where she is embarked onto one of the fishing boats and paraded up and down the coast for all those gathered on the beach to see.

Although the temperatures have certainly risen after a particularly long Spring, we haven’t had any of the scorchers that we would normally have experienced by now, not that I’m complaining. Well that’s enough about the weather, it’s definitely summer because of all the festivals and ferias in the offing, in fact over the next four or five weeks we have ferias in Estepona, Manilva, Castillo, La Linea, and Casares, along with a whole host of concerts, music festivals and so on. To help you navigate your way through all of these events we have put together a comprehensive What’s On Guide so hopefully you won’t miss out on the fun and festivities. I mentioned in the last issue’s editorial the new developments at The Resident about which you can read more on page 4, needless to say we are looking forward to taking The Resident forward in the brave new media world.

El Gobierno de Gibraltar acoge favorablemente los planes de la Federación de Fútbol de Gibraltar (Gibraltar Football Association, GFA) para el nuevo Estadio Victoria. El Gobierno ha colaborado estrechamente con la GFA para persuadir a la UEFA de utilizar esta ubicación para el desarrollo del primer estadio nacional de fútbol de Gibraltar. La gran diferencia entre la labor del Gobierno y los planes propuestos por otras partidos durante las últimas elecciones radica en que el acuerdo final alcanzado entre el Gobierno y la GFA ha generado 16,5 millones de libras en ingresos para el Gobierno. n un mundo siempre cambiante, es esencial moverse con los tiempos o seguir el camino de los dinosaurios, y en este sentido, el negocio periodístico no es nada distinto. Mientras que a muchas personas siempre les gustará tener un periódico físico que puedan sentarse y leer, a menudo acompañado de una buena taza de té o café, es un hecho que la mayoría de la población consume sus noticias e información en línea a través de su PC, tableta o teléfono móvil. En The Resident nuestro objetivo es crear una plataforma de medios híbrida, mientras conservamos la edición

impresa mensual, hemos realizado algunos cambios en su apariencia, reduciendo la extensión de algunos de los artículos, usando diferentes tipos de letra y tamaños, etc. lo que nos ha permitido reducir el tamaño de la publicación a 40 páginas con la misma cantidad de noticias e información. En algunos casos, incluiremos resúmenes en el ejemplar físico, con un enlace a un artículo ampliado en www.theresident. eu, o un enlace a una galería de imágenes en el sitio web o en Facebook. También crearemos una sección de idioma español en el sitio web para proporcionar el mismo recurso para nuestros lectores de habla hispana.

n an ever changing world it is essential to move with the times or go the way of the dinosaurs, and in this sense the newspaper business is no different to any other. Whilst many people will always like to have a physical newspaper that they can sit and read, often accompanied by a nice cup of tea or coffee, it is a fact that most people now consume their news and information online via their pc, tablet or smartphone. At The Resident our aim is to create a hybrid media platform, whilst retaining the monthly printed edition we have made a

few changes to the look and feel, reducing the length of some of the news items, using different typefaces and sizes, etc., which has allowed us to slim the paper down to 40 pages whilst carrying the same amount of news and information. In some cases we will include summaries in the paper, with a link to an expanded article on www.theresident.eu, or a link to a picture gallery on the website or on Facebook. We will also be creating a Spanish language section on the website to provide the same resource for our Spanish speaking readers.

The Resident will also be merging with Manilva Coffee Chat as well as forging close links with other Facebook Groups so as to provide information and subsidised advertising opportunities to their members. With reference to advertising opportunities, over the coming weeks and months we will be creating new advertising packages to suit all requirements and budgets. All these measures are being introduced to ensure the future of The Resident, as the valuable community resource that it has become over the twelve years since its inception.

Comienzan las obras de restauración de la fachada y rehabilitación de la torrecampanario de la Iglesia del Llano Además de la reconstrucción de la torre-campanario cuya techumbre ha sufrido un serio deterioro en los últimos años, los trabajos supondrán la recuperación de los frescos originales de la fachada, ocultos bajo capas de pintura, y la restitución del estado inicial de la misma. El Ayuntamiento colabora en el proyecto con la eliminación del cableado de la fachada del edificio para lo que va a realizar la obra civil para el soterramiento

de la líneas eléctricas desde la Fuente. Se trata de la primera fase del proyecto de puesta en valor de la iglesia de origen conventual (franciscano-capuchino). Un plan que impulsa la Diócesis de Málaga para la rehabilitación de la torre-campanario, que es la actuación más urgente por encontrarse en estado ruinoso. Pero que también prevé en sucesivas fases, la renovación de la instalación eléctrica, iluminación y sonido; la

restauración completa de la solería; la recuperación de frescos en los muros interiores, así como de la cripta existente en los sótanos; y la restauración de La Pastora como espacio público. El equipo de gobierno del Ayuntamiento de Casares ha mostrado en todo momento su predisposición a colaborar con el proyecto que supone la revalorización de un edificio de gran importancia por ser sede de culto religioso y por su gran valor patrimonial.

El Ayuntamiento de Casares destina a este programa de formación 20.000€, con el objeto de colaborar económicamente con los estudiantes, además de

favorecer su formación a través de prácticas formativas en diferentes áreas del Consistorio, que siempre se intenta que estén relacionadas con los estudios que están cursando los beneficiarios. En esta convocatoria, por primera vez, han sido más los aspirantes, 61 estudiantes, que las 50 becas ofertadas. Por lo que se ha tenido que realizar, como se expresa en las bases, una selección en función de los criterios económicos y las calificaciones académicas de

En marcha la quinta edición del Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz Hasta el próximo 31 de julio están abiertos los plazos de inscripción para las categorías oficiales de largometrajes y documentales; hasta el 31 de agosto el plazo de presentación de fotografías y hasta el 27 de septiembre la inscripción para el Concurso de Cortos Exprés. Todas las bases pueden consultarse en la web www. nuevocineandaluz.com. Además de las proyecciones de las obras a concurso y de los debates con sus realizadores, este

año el Festival trae una muestra de cortometrajes andaluces realizados por mujeres. La antesala del Festival llega con el Concurso Cortos Exprés, que tendrá lugar en las 48 horas del fin de semana anterior, desde el viernes 28 al domingo 30 de septiembre. Los participantes rodarán, montaran y entregarán un cortometraje en Casares en este plazo, debiendo incorporar a sus obras una frase u objeto que la organización comunicará en el momento de empezar los

rodajes. El Festival otorgará los dos premios del jurado, el Pajarraco de Plata, de 1.000 € y 500 €, y un premio del público de 600 €. El Concurso de Fotografía tiene como temática el cine en su más amplia acepción. Los participantes pueden optar a un premio de 1.000 € y a ser uno de los treinta seleccionados que integran la exposición fotográfica Nuevo Cine Andaluz de este año, que se inaugurará en la semana del Festival.

Casares renueva el convenio de formación con Finca Cortesin Finca Cortesin ha renovado su patrocinio de cursos de formación bajo el Plan de Formación Municipal de Casares. Esta iniciativa proporciona a los demandantes de empleo del municipio formación práctica y ofrece a la vez la oportunidad de que los responsables de la empresa conozcan cómo trabajan los participantes, lo que tendrán en cuenta para futuras posibles contrataciones. Gracias a este convenio el pasado año se ofrecieron dos cursos: de Jardinería y Paisajismo en el que participaron 81 personas, y de Gestión de Pisos y Limpieza de Alojamientos con 42 participantes.

Para este año se estudia las necesidades de personal con la empresa para adecuar los

programas formativos que se ponen en marcha, invirtiendo para ello 7.800 euros.

Casares renews its training agreement with Finca Cortesin Finca Cortesin has renewed its sponsorship of training courses under the Casares Municipal Training Plan. This initiative provides local youngsters and unemployed the opportunity to learn applicable skills, whilst also allowing managers at the resort

to identify suitable candidates for possible future contracts. Thanks to this agreement signed last year two courses were offered from the Municipal Training Plan: Gardening and Landscaping in which 81 people participated,

and Housing Management and Cleaning of Accommodation with 42 participants. This year the training programme is being adapted to suit the company’s requirements for which it is providing funding of 7,800 euros.

Casares commemorates the birth of Blas Infante with the presentation of the solidarity prizes Coinciding with the anniversary of Blas Infante, who was born in Casares on July 5, 1885, on Thursday, July 5, the Blas Infante Awards: Casares Solidario will be presented. An initiative in which the town of Casares continues to reward international cooperation and educational development projects for which it allocates 50,000 euros from municipal budgets. The award ceremony will take place at 12 noon at the Blas Infante de Casares Cultural Centre, where the NGOs that have presented projects are expected to attend, as well as

those awarded in the last edition that will present the work carried out with the funding granted by the town of Casares. The Blas Infante Awards: Casares Solidario are aimed at non-profit associations and non-governmental organizations in order to cooperate economically with those projects whose objective is to defend a socially just development model, favour development, enhance cooperation, mitigate social imbalances, protect the weakest and alleviate existing inequalities in the world.

Submissions invited for the 5th Andalucian New Cinema Festival The submission period has opened for feature films and documentary entries to this year's V Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz which will be accepted up to 31 July, 2018. The Festival, which will be held from Friday 28 September to Saturday 6 October, will feature screenings of the entries, along with workshops and seminars, and this year will feature a number of Andalucian shorts made by women. Mejora de accesibilidad Este año son novedad los nuevos elevadores acuáticos instalados en las piscinas de Casares y Secadero para facilitar el acceso a las personas con movilidad reducida.

Casares conmemora este jueves el nacimiento de Blas Infante con la entrega de los premios solidarios Coincidiendo con el aniversario de Blas Infante, que nació en Casares el 5 de julio de 1885, el jueves 5 de julio se da a conocer los Premios Blas Infante: Casares Solidario. Una convocatoria con la que el pueblo de Casares continua recompensando la cooperación internacional y la educación al desarrollo para lo que destina 50.000 euros de los presupuestos municipales. La Concejalía de Medio Ambiente publica Cultura y Medio Ambiente de Casares se benefician del una guía de plantas costeras de Casares Editada por el Ayuntamiento, convenio entre Ayuntamiento y tiene como objeto dar a conocer la biodiversidad vegetal y el la cantera de la Utrera alto valor ecológico del litoral casareño para así promover su conservación. Casares tiene más de dos kilómetros de litoral, desde la Piedra Paloma, en el límite de Estepona, hasta el río Manilva al oeste. Una zona costera que contiene ecosistemas muy diversos y de gran valor ecológico: dunas, arenales, acantilados y playas, así como sus fondos y roquedos marinos. Se trata de un manual de 28 páginas que recoge más de 20 especies silvestres. Incluye una introducción de la concejala de Medio Ambiente, Noelia Rodríguez, mapa de la zona, y fichas de las plantas que se pueden encontrar en nuestro litoral, con imágenes y fotografías del farmacéutico de Casares, Mariano Ruedas, y del técnico de Medio Ambiente del Ayuntamiento, Cristóbal García.

El alcalde ha reunido a la Comisión de Seguimiento formada por representantes del equipo de gobierno y de la Sociedad General de Canteras para acordar el destino que se dará a la aportación del 1,5% de los beneficios de la producción bruta anual de la citada cantera, que supondrá este año 57,675 euros. La reversión al Consistorio del 1,5% de los beneficios de la producción bruta anual de la cantera de la Utrera es una de las cláusulas del convenio del Ayuntamiento de Casares con la Sociedad General de Canteras, que también supuso la reducción del perímetro de actuación de la cantera, la protección de la Cueva del Duque, la zona cercana a los Baños de la Hedionda, el canuto de la Utrera y la renuncia de la cantera a la explotación de la Utrera 2, al otro lado del canuto, para la que la empresa tenía 30 años de concesión.

A Guide to the Coastal Plants of Casares The Casares Environment Department has published a new guidebook to raise awareness of plant biodiversity and the high ecological value of the Casares coastline and promote its conservation.

Casares has more than two kilometers of coastline, from Piedra Paloma, on the Estepona border, to the Manilva river to the west. A coastal area that contains very diverse ecosystems and of great ecological value: dunes,

sandbanks, cliffs and beaches, as well as its seabed and rocky crags. It is a 28-page guide that includes more than 20 wild species, with information, images, maps and photographs.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa que ha entrado en funcionamiento el primer servicio de ‘Bibliopiscina’ de la ciudad con el objetivo de fomentar la lectura. El concejal adscrito al área de Deportes, Adrián Trujillo, ha explicado que esta iniciativa se llevará cabo durante todo el verano en la piscina municipal de Santo Tomás, que es utilizada por más de 4.000 usuarios durante la temporada estival. El edil ha explicado que este servicio se prestará todos los lunes desde las 12.00 de la mañana hasta las 14.00 horas de la tarde en colaboración con la Biblioteca Municipal y la delegación municipal de Deportes. Trujillo ha subrayado que la piscina de Santo Tomás es una de las instalaciones municipales más visitadas durante el verano, por lo que “hemos querido acercar los libros a los más jóvenes y a los adultos que pueden disponer de más tiempo para la lectura durante estas fechas”. booked, free of charge, up to two weeks in advance, on a first come, first served basis. Cabe recordar que de lunes a viernes, la piscina se utiliza para desarrollar las actividades acuáticas para mayores y niños, por lo tanto, el horario de apertura al público es de 15.00h a 20.00h.

from 3 pm to 8 pm from Monday to Friday and from 12 noon to 8 pm at the weekend. Entry is free and there is a bar from which the public can purchase drinks and snacks.

There are also a number of aquatic activities from all ages on weekday mornings, information about which is available at the Sports Department offices next to the football ground.

El citado ente supramunicipal, a través de su equipo de técnicos, realizó un trazado para una de las principales arterias de San Luis de Sabinillas con la intención de

SUR lanza el jueves 28 de junio la Revista SIX; una publicación que pretende profundizar en la realidad social, la actualidad y la cultura LGTBI (lesbianas, gays, trans, bisexuales e intersexuales) a través de una serie de reportajes, entrevistas, informaciones y artículos con una mirada desde el colectivo, pero con el objetivo de hacerla interesante para todos los lectores, independientemente de su orientación sexual o identidad de género. En la presentación de este medio, celebrada en la tarde de ayer, estuvo presente el concejal de Extranjeros, Dean Tyler Shelton, muy comprometido con este colectivo. Málaga y la Costa del Sol han sido históricamente la cuna del colectivo LGTBI. Nuestro municipio, con el evento Manilva Pride, también se ha convertido en referencias actuales. Aunque no paran de darse pasos en

positivo, la LGTBIfobia sigue siendo una asignatura a erradicar; una acción en la que los medios de comunicación tienen mucho que decir. Six Magazine highlights Manilva Pride as a reference for the LGBT community Diario SUR has launched its new SIX Magazine, a publication that seeks to delve into the social reality, current affairs and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) culture through a series of reports, interviews, information and articles from an LGBT point of view, but with the goal of making it interesting and inclusive for all readers, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. At a recent presentation of this new publication, Manilva’s Councillor for Foreigners, Dean Tyler Shelton, met with the director of the Diario Sur, the team of Sur in English, the president of the Asociación Colega, Santiago Rubio, who unconditionally supported the Manilva Pride. Malaga and the Costa del Sol have historically been welcoming to the

LGBT collective, Manilva, through the Manilva Pride event, has also become an important reference. Although society has come a long way, homophobia is still a blight that needs to be eradicated; an action in which the media have an important role. That is the main motivation from which the magazine is born: to make visible the collective through diverse and quality content within the framework of a pioneering publication. The Olympic swimmer Carlos Peralta, 21 times champion of Spain, committed to the aforementioned Councillor Shelton to be part of the Manilva Pride team for 2019 as a speaker at talks, conducting workshops on LGBT awareness and equality.

VI Sendero Nocturno El viernes 20 de julio se celebrará el VII Sendero Nocturno “Playas de Manilva” que seguirá el itinerario del Sendero Azul, hasta adentrarnos en la Reserva Ecológica que ocupa una extensión de unos 4 km, desde la playa de los toros hasta el fin del término municipal, pasando por el negro, cala sardina, las arenas y punta chullera. Esta iniciativa está organizada por la Delegación de Medio Ambiente del Ayuntamiento de Manilva, dirigida por

Dean Tyler Shelton. A partir de las 7 de la tarde se abrirá el stand instalado en el paseo marítimo de Sabinillas, en la plaza del Cali, donde los interesados podrán formular las correspondientes inscripciones. A las nueve y media de la noche en ese mismo punto se iniciará la caminata rumbo a la Playa del Negro, por un recorrido de unos diez kilómetros de ida y vuelta. Los participantes deben asistir con ropa y calzado apropiado. Además, los menores de catorce años, tendrán que ir acompañados por un adulto.

VII Night Ramble This year’s VII Night Hike will be held on Friday 20 July from 9.30 pm. This 10 km moonlight ramble sets off from the statue in Plaza del Cali on the promenade in Sabinillas and follows the municipality’s “Blue Path” until the Ecological Reserve past the beaches at Playa de los Toros, Playa Negro Cala Sardina, Playa Las Arenas and Punta Chullera, before returning to Sabinillas, a round trip of 10 kms. Organised by Manilva’s Environment Department, headed by Dean Shelton, registration is from 7 pm at Plaza del Cali, and participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. The hike is a great way to discover Manilva’s beautiful coastline.

A partir del 1 de Enero de 2018, las herencias estarán exentas siempre y cuando el importe total del caudal sea inferior a un millón de euros. Está bonificación tiene varias reglas a tener en cuenta: estarán exentos en caso de cónyuge, ascendientes y descendientes; es requisito que el patrimonio preexistente del heredero no

supere el millón de euros; no será de aplicación a herencias ocurridas antes del 1 de enero de 2018. Recordemos que, antes de entrar en vigor esta modificación, el límite para la exención era de 250.000 euros. Con esta nueva regulación, se pretende ampliar el límite, con lo que el impuesto esté en exento en el 99% de los casos. Como crítica, destacar que sigue habiendo un grupo de personas a las que no les será de aplicación la exención de un millón de euros, como son aquellos que no sean parientes directos, es decir, nietos, primos, etc. Un proceso de herencia es un trámite muy complejo que requiere un conocimiento completo del mismo. Desde la aceptación de una herencia hasta el Impuesto de Sucesiones, existe una gran casuística. Cada caso es distinto y es necesario que se conozca la materia en profundidad para evitar problemas en el futuro. There are often discrepancies between the real meters of a property or plot and those which are registered in the Land Registry or Cadastre Office. This can be due to extensions being added to a property, or in the case of land, to the segregation of a plot from a larger plot, without reporting these changes to the correct authorities, (i.e. the Land Registry and the Cadastre office). These discrepancies can cause problems when applying for a mortgage as Banks will not finance a property that is not correctly registered. In order to rectify the situation a new deed must be made declaring the new construction or segregation and specifying the actual size. This would require a Certificate detailing the actual meters to be issued by a qualified Architect which should then be duly registered in the Land Registry. In reality the measurements in the Land Registry and the Cadastre Office rarely match, because the measurements in the Registry are from measurements taken by an Architect and the surface areas in the Cadastre Office are taken from aerial photographs. If you have any problems regarding the discrepancies between real measurements and those documented in either the Land Registry or the Cadastre Office you would need expert legal advice on the best way to rectify the situation. In most cases it can only be done by submitting documentation relating to the property, such as the Deed of Sale, the Deed of New Construction, plans, drawings, photographs, certificates etc. to the Cadastre Office so that their technical staff can proceed to update the specifications and modify the documented areas. There are also many cases where the property or plot is not registered under the name of the actual owner in the Land Registry or the Cadastre Office. In these cases it is not simply a matter of rectifying the measurements, but a matter of registering the property or plot for the first time. If this is necessary, in addition to submitting documentation to prove the physical reality of the plot or property you would also need to provide at least the last 4 years of IBI (LOCAL PROPERTY TAXES) receipts. To avoid all of these problems, we always recommend that before buying a plot or a property you should check the Land Registry and Cadastre office to ensure that the details are correctly documented. This process would require the assistance of a qualified expert who can make all of the necessary enquiries to confirm that everything is in order. Mariposario de Benalmádena Una polilla se posa de forma inadvertida en un charco de barro. Extiende y bate sus alas desesperadamente para intentar soltarse, sin éxito; las dos alas se quedaron pegadas en el lodo y la mariposa muere. 190 millones de años después, en Dorset, Inglaterra, se encontró el fósil de la polilla más antigua conocida del mundo. En ese periodo, han evolucionado 160.000 especies de polillas y 17.500 especies de mariposas. Cada una es distinta de la otra con sus propios colores y diseños que han evolucionado como mecanismos de defensa o camuflaje, para ocultarse de los depredadores, y cada una ha evolucionado para crear una relación única con especies concretas de plantas. Este entorno ecológicamente equilibrado ha sido recreado en Benalmádena. Pero primero, vamos a intentar responder a esa importante pregunta: ¿cuál es la diferencia entre una polilla y una mariposa? Las mariposas vuelan sobre todo de día, tienen antenas en forma de tambor, un cuerpo delgado y cuando aterrizan pliegan sus alas verticalmente sobre su cuerpo. Las polillas vuelan de noche, y tienen colores más apagados para camuflarse ya que duermen de día. Además, tienen antenas plumosas y cuerpos gruesos y peludos para conservar el calor. Cuando aterrizan, las alas se extienden y pliegan sobre el cuerpo para revelar el diseño sobre las alas superiores. Podrás aprender todo esto y mucho más

en el Mariposario de Benalmádena, donde más de mil mariposas vuelan de flor en flor y ocasionalmente a tu hombro. El exterior del Mariposario recuerda a un templo tailandés y dentro parece una selva tropical. Exuberante vegetación con coloridas flores, arbustos y orquídeas proporcionan las estructuras para las polillas y las mariposas. Las plantas han sido seleccionadas para albergar a las numerosas especies y proporcionar cobijo a los huevos, comida para las orugas, estructuras para las crisálidas y un soporte para la mariposa que emerge mientras seca sus alas. Además de estas plantas, algunas son meramente ornamentales y algunas están destinadas a producir néctar para alimentar a las mariposas. El personal examina regularmente las plantas extrayendo las crisálidas que se depositan en unas rejillas creadas para exponerlas al público. Butterfly House at Benalmadena A moth inadvertently lands in a patch of mud. It extends and beats its wings frantically to try and release itself, to no avail, both wings became stuck in the ooze and the moth dies. 190 million years later, in Dorset, England, the fossil of the oldest known moth in the world was found. In the intervening years 160,000 species of moth and 17,500 species of butterfly evolved. Each is distinct from the next with its own colours and patterns that have evolved as defence mechanisms or as camouflage to hide the insect from predators and each has evolved a unique relationship with particular species of plants. This ecologically balanced environment has been recreated in Benalmadena. But first an answer to that burning question, ‘What is the difference between a moth and

a butterfly’. Butterflies mainly fly during the day, have drum shaped antenna, a slim body and when landed fold their wings vertically over the body. Moths fly at night, have more muted colours for camouflage since they sleep during the day, have feathery antennae and thick, hairy bodies for warmth. When landed the wings extend and fold over the body to reveal the pattern on the upper wings. All these facts and more can be learnt at the Butterfly House in Benalmadena where over a thousand butterflies flit from flower to leaf and occasionally, shoulder. Outside the Butterfly House resembles a Thai temple and inside is a semi tropical jungle. Lush vegetation with colourful flowers, shrubs and orchids, provide the structures for the moths and butterflies. The plants have been chosen to host the many species and provide shelter for the eggs, food for the caterpillars, a fixing for the chrysalis and a perch for the newly emerged butterfly whilst it dries its wings. In addition to host plants, some of the planting is purely ornamental and some

of it is for the nectar producing flowers that feed the butterflies. Staff regularly sift through the plants and remove the chrysalises to a purpose built rack that is on display. Here visitors can actually watch the butterflies and moths emerge. Each species has its own season so there is something to see all year round. Running through the house is a stream that emerges from on high over a waterfall. A pond contains Koi Carp, some are quite large and may well have included unwary butterflies in their diets. One creature that definitely preys on moths and such is the Chameleon, which is why he is kept in a cage rather than let loose to hunt. Of no threat to the other inhabitants, including humans, are the iguanas that drape themselves indolently wherever they fancy, the tortoises, a few finches and parrots and surprisingly, a wallaby. Over 500 butterfly and moth species have been collected from all over the world, Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania and include the largest moth in the world, the snakes head moth. This is a nocturnal moth that perches and sleeps during the day; conveniently on a bush adjacent to the path that wends its way through the jungle. To protect itself from predators whilst asleep it spreads its wings and then resembles, you guessed it, a snake, well two actually, one on each wing.

Saint George entrega material de ajedrez en dos colegios

Saint George Charity donates chess equipment to local schools The Saint George Charity recently presented a large quantity of chess equipment to local primary schools in Manilva. The Saint Charity not only provides support for the disadvantaged but also promotes and develops social infrastructure, helping other charities and associations, as well as a number of sporting, cultural and educational initiatives including the provision of chess sets, timers, teaching aids, etc., to the Maicandil School in Sabinillas and Pablo Picasso School in Manilva, where the chess classes are run by local chess master Francisco Senda. The directors of both schools, along with Mayor Mario Jiménez and education councillor, Diego

Food Bank The Saint George Charity runs a food bank initiative to help local people who are finding it difficult to make ends meet, and invites people to donate non-perishable goods, such as long life milk, pasta, rice, biscuits, tinned meat and fish, tinned vegetables, etc., along with toiletries, personal hygiene and cleaning items.

The charity will supplement these items with fresh produce, and will distribute on a weekly basis to a number of individuals and families that have been identified as being in urgent need of this service. BuddyUp (Manilva) Community Support Group In response to a tragic situation earlier in the year a number of local residents came together to form the BuddyUp (Manilva) Community Support Group, a ‘befriending’ group to provide support, comfort and a point of contact for people facing a variety of challenges. The BuddyUp group is coordinated by Marguerite Wilkins, and already has a number of members signed up. Working closely with other local charities and organisations, including the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George, Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva, Citizens’ Advice, Cudeca, Social Services, etc., the group aims to provide support and advice for the elderly, disabled, those who have recently lost a partner, single parents, divorcees, the socially excluded, people that are new to the area, in fact anyone who might need someone to talk to or just pointing in the right direction.

BuddyUp volunteers work in pairs and have access to a wide range of resources to call upon depending on the needs of those they are assisting. Saint George Charity Shops The St George Charity operates three charity shops, two in Sabinillas, Manilva and one in La Cancelada, Estepona. In Sabinillas one of the shops sells quality second hand clothing, shoes, hats and accessories; whilst the other sells a wide range of secondhand furniture, decorative items, household goods, books, cds,

dvds, etc. Our shop in La Cancelada sells the same full range of secondhand items as our Sabinillas shops and also stocks larger items of furniture and beds. Thanks to our generous donors there are new items in the shops daily, so visit regularly so as not to miss out on that fabulous bargain.

As well as stocking some great quality items the St George Charity shops also rent out various items such as wheelchairs, walking aids, travel cots, etc. The shop management welcome donations of quality secondhand items, and can arrange collection if needed. We are also looking for secondhand books, especially in languages other than English, to populate are extensive bookshelves. The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George is hosting a weekly surgery by Citizens Advice Bureau Spain every Wednesday morning from 10.30 am to 1 pm. The surgery will be held at the St George Charity’s new shop in Calle Aurora de Albornoz, Punta Almina, Sabinillas, and is part of the Charity’s community support programme. Age Concern - Message from the President Hard to believe that we are already half way through the year following a wet and cold winter/spring. Age Concern Estepona and Manilva, has continued to see more people coming for advice and information.

Many problems concern families having to look at how best to care for an elderly relative, either in Spain or back in the UK. Care homes in Spain are not cheap and public care homes are few. Often the option is taken to

Charity Shop The shop under the management of Marie-Andrée has faced severe difficulties this year as Estepona continues to have its streets redeveloped. Calle Zaragoza, where our shop resides, has suffered months of noise, dirt and general building mess. We expected a loss of income as clients have struggled to get to us and it says a lot for the quality of goods we sell that many of our customers have still got to us.

Donations continue to be delivered and we are grateful to those who make sure we have new goods to sell. When we close for the summer break (July 27th to September 3rd) we will be back to normal but with better pedestrian access to the shop and a handy car park under the Plaza. Shop hours will remain 10 am to 3.30 pm Monday to Friday plus the first Saturday of the month

Appeal for Volunteers and Fund Raisers Like most charities Age Concern needs more volunteers to work in the shop and the community. A few hours a week is all that is asked for and the benefit it brings to those that need help is immeasurable. One specialist role is urgently needed and that is, someone who is prepared to take on the role of Fund Raiser. Age Concern is a charity and is nonprofit making. This means we have to balance income and expenditure and we have no large reserves in the bank - what we raise through events

and the shop we spend providing services to those who need them. Another role that is urgently needed is someone to maintain, and repair, our disability equipment. Also, more volunteers are needed to work in the community with older people and in the shop. All the people who work for us are unpaid, all are volunteers. El silencio de tu padre me preocupa. En la mente, lo sé, hay sonidos dispuestos en orden a los que les cuesta salir por la boca. También los hay en el corazón. Porque el alma piensa. Me dices que lleva seis días sin decir nada. En cada hombre existe un eco interior que inevitablemente brota tarde o temprano. ¿Qué hace? ¿Qué intenta demostrar con su silencio? ¿Ha dejado de trabajar? Está claro que su mirada habla. Tu padre es demasiado empírico, o al menos hasta hace unos días, como para callar sin un motivo grave. Eso lo tengo claro. A ver si todo esto no se somatiza. Ya sabemos que el cuerpo platica cuando la mente enmudece. Hace unos meses me entusiasmé con un amigo porque queríamos hacer un viaje a Cádiz.Llamé a tu padre y le propuse acompañarnos, él tan acomodado en su entorno como se encontraba me dijo que no le iba a aportar nada nuevo ir a Cádiz, ciudad que ya conocía. No me dejó explicarle nada sobre ese viaje, pues no se trataba de una mera visita a la ciudad, que yo también aprecio y conozco. Se celebraba una semana de intensas ponencias sobre psiquiatría y me hubiera gustado asistir, al menos a algunas de ellas. Me hizo esa recomendación un amigo psicólogo que vive precisamente en la ciudad fenicia. Asistiría un experto en trastornos psicóticos y de adicciones que me entusiasmaba. Yo, de verdad, no sé qué puede pasarle. Algo apocado sí lo veo desde que tu hermano se marchó, pero no considero (eso nos pasa casi siempre a los profesionales de la mente), que por ello deba deprimirse, y hasta el punto de perder el habla. Es verdad, sí, tu hermano es hostil, polémico, y altanero con sus amigos y con sus amantes, que sé que las tiene; él propició con tu padre esa disputa absurda sobre tu cuñada, a la que defendió tu padre antes y después de la separación conyugal de tu hermano.“Mira papá, tú no la conoces”. “No, pero a ti sí”. Y esa fue su única respuesta: “No, pero a ti sí”. Ay, tu padre, que ayuda a tanta gente con problemas, sobre todo en trastornos de adicciones, y no logra socorrer a su hijo, ayudarle a ser mejor persona; yo creo que además, permíteme decírtelo, tu hermano es demasiado rebelde, terco y soberbio. Solo es bueno en su trabajo como economista. Cambió de empresa, se marchó de la ciudad, y no dijo a nadie adiós. Pues vaya. Si este hombre tiene algo positivo en su carácter, desde luego, tu madre es la única que puede apreciarlo; ella presume de su fuerza física, de su inteligencia, de su agilidad para resolver problemas, de sus aciertos y su pragmatismo heredado de tu padre; pero todo eso en él es también impaciencia, arrebato; tu padre es más elocuente y comedido. Me comentó en una ocasión que tenía un paciente, que era él mismo, y lo trataba porque se acercó demasiado a la mendacidad ante su propia familia. No lo entendí. El psiquiatra contra el psiquiatra. Pero tu hermano fue así siempre, desde pequeño. Sí, tus padres y tú sois distintos, con vuestros defectos, como todo el mundo,

pero tu hermano nunca fue prudente; ah, un maleducado incapaz de reconocer sus errores. Y ahora eso. Pobre chica con la que se casó. Hace mucho que no sé de ella. Y digo pobre porque en verdad tuvo mala suerte con él. Tu madre dijo que todo era una experiencia más del matrimonio, y así disculpa el malhumor de tu hermano. Claro, hasta el altercado grave. Tu padre, hombre muy razonable, siempre se abrió a dialogar, a intentar que respetase a su esposa. Ella defendía a su hijo; pero yo cómo iba a imaginar que llegaría la sangre al río. Me estás diciendo que tu hermano se marchó después de haber golpeado a su mujer, arrogante…, como si no hubiera pasado nada. Entonces, no es de extrañar que mi amigo esté así. Lo que debe tener tu padre es un trastorno afectivo. Es un gran profesional, y su reacción es firme ante las situaciones. Desde luego que es un hombre con sentimientos. Tu hermano parecía haberse vuelto cada vez más amorfo. Qué veneno propagado en la sociedad. ¿Qué está pasando? Ya es tan común esto de maltratar. De verdad que lo siento, no imaginaba ese desenlace tan salvaje en la pareja. Tu padre quiere a su nuera. Me dices que ahora vive con su tía y el niño. Pues debe estar grande tu sobrino. Qué cosas pasan. Yo pensaba que detrás del silencio de tu padre se encontraba otro motivo; quizás intenté darle algo más de originalidad al asunto; pero ya sabemos que la vida está impregnada de sonidos bellos y también vulgares; solo el arte es capaz de hacernos salir de la mediocridad. Él es un hombre tan activo y ocupado, siempre en su traza psicológica y natural, decía que las cosas son más sencillas en algunos episodios contrarios de la vida si dejamos de pensar desde lo sombrío. ¿En qué sucesos? En los que ya se han demostrado a lo largo de los siglos que perjudican. Pero el hombre no dejar de ser el niño que sigue gateando y tropezando. Tu padre es unos de los psiquiatras que a más pacientes ha rehabilitado en el campo de la adicción. Basaba mucha de sus teorías en la esclavitud que producen las dependencias en el ser humano. Pensé que por exceso de trabajo le surgió ese problema de la mudez. A veces, en el desorden de las cosas que un pragmático no controla, la saturación de la mente es evidente. La cotidianidad del problema se prolonga demasiado, y así más tarde aparece ese silencio invadiendo, amenazante, donde incluso fluye una posibilidad de suicidio. Es un riego. Tengo miedo por tu padre, es demasiado conocedor del interior, pero también demasiado experto y realista para dejar influir su corazón de emociones que lo enfermen. Ahora que sé la verdad, anularé el viaje a Cádiz, ya habrá momento para hacerlo. Hablaré con él desde hoy mismo de este asunto. Supongo que a tu hermano lo habrán detenido. Exposición pictórica "Color en carne viva" del artista Manuel Robles en la Casa Las Tejerinas La Casa de Las Tejerinas, sita en la Plaza de Las Flores, acogerá a partir del viernes 6 de julio, a las 19:00 horas, la exposición pictórica “Color en carne viva”, del artista Manuel Robles López, pintor y escultor afincado en Torremolinos con más de medio centenar de exposiciones en su trayectoria, y un estilo colorista inspirado en los muralistas latinoamericanos del s. XX. Manuel Robles nace en Málaga, ciudad donde adquiere sus primeros conocimientos pictóricos de la mano de la “Generación de los cincuenta”. Discípulo del pintor y académico Pepe España, con quien da sus primeros pasos, hasta desvincularse a partir los años setenta, fecha en la que comienza su andadura en solitario. Expone por primera vez en su ciudad natal en el año 1966, iniciando su larga trayectoria artística. A partir de esta fecha participa muy activamente en diferentes eventos dentro del panorama artístico andaluz. Desde el año 1997 forma parte de diferentes foros artísticos, aunque siempre ha procurado huir de los convencionalismos y de los movimientos academicistas. Aporta su particular forma de concebir el arte con una personalidad muy acusada, tratando de enriquecerse con las corrientes más progresistas y compaginando la pintura con el modelado y la cerámica. Suele realizar una o dos muestras individuales al año, y además colabora en algunas colectivas. Ha realizado exposiciones por todo el territorio español, encontrándose su obra muy repartida por distintas ciudades españolas y europeas. Si sus planes de vacaciones este verano incluyen a sus animales entonces hay otras consideraciones a tener en cuenta y más para las caminatas en el campo o los paseos por la playa. Todo lo que brilla no es de oro, y con este calor hay que estar al tanto de las amenazas de los ectoparásitos - pulgas, garrapatas, mosquitos y moscas - como se ha mencionado en artículos anteriores. Los perros y los gatos no transpiran a través de su piel, como los seres humanos y los caballos. Cortando todo el pelo de nuestro perro en el verano porque está jadeando no necesariamente va hacerle más fresco. Ese abrigo de piel podría estar ayudando a protegerle contra insectos picadores y a su vez aislarle un poco del sol y las quemaduras. Un perro o gato jadea cuando hace calor como una forma de controlar la temperatura corporal, del mismo modo, no siempre significa que tienen sed. Hay muchos tipos de malas hierbas y semillas de plantas secas que se pegan al pelo y a la piel que pueden causar todo tipo de problemas entre los dedos de los pies, la nariz, en las orejas y oídos, o en el ojo. Si un chapuzón en el mar o la piscina es bueno para refrescar, es importante recordar que para nosotros enjuagarnos después del agua salada o del cloro con agua clara, será lógico que los animales reciban el mismo tratamiento. Esto puede ayudar a reducir los hot spots (puntos calientes) o eczemas de verano que son demasiado frecuentes. Demasiado uso de champú, incluso con el más suave de los champús medicados pueden causar problemas de la piel en lugar de resolverlos. Asegúrese de que en el calor tengan abundancia de agua disponible. Si el agua no es apta para que bebamos entonces deberíamos dar a nuestros animales de la misma agua embotellada que usamos. Deben estar en un lugar bien ventilado, y un lugar con sombra para poder refugiarse. Recuerde, si viaja con su perro y teiene que dejarlo en el coche por un corto

periodo de tiempo, piense dos veces. Incluso dejando las ventanas parcialmente abiertas no puede proporcionar suficientes propiedades de enfriamiento como se muestra en el triste caso de los dos perros de la policía en Inglaterra, que murieron hace poco aunque sólo se dejaba desatendido durante unos pocos minutos. Si está preocupado de que su perro está sufriendo un sobrecalentamiento, o sea un golpe de calor o se muestra signos de angustia, debemos tomar medidas inmediatas para ayudarlo. En primer lugar, enfrie sus pies mojonándolos o colocándolos en un recipiente con agua fría y así como una ligera ducha con agua fría, y en segundo lugar busque asesoramiento profesional por un golpe de calor que puede tener un desenlace fatal. Los Perros sudan o hacen la termorregulación (como ya decimos) a través de sus pies y jadeando, por lo que enfriando los pies es una de las maneras más rápida de aliviar su angustia del calor. También es importante tener en cuenta el calor irradiado de asfalto, cemento, caminos de tierra o arena de la playa. Si no puede caminar cómodamente descalzo sobre estas superficies es probablemente demasiado caliente para pasear a su mascota. También pueden salir ampollas o sufrir quemaduras en los pies/patas/ garras/pezuñas. Manteniendo estos consejos en mente debería proporcionar unas vacaciones más sanas y relajadas para todos. The Heat Is On

If your holiday plans include your animals this summer then there are other considerations to be aware of for those hikes in the countryside or jaunts on the beach. All that glitters is not gold and with this heat be aware of the threats from ectoparasites – fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and biting flies – as mentioned in previous articles. Dogs and cats do not perspire through their skin as humans and horses do, cutting all the fur down on our dog in the summertime because they are panting may not necessarily make them cooler. That fur coat could be helping to protect against biting insects and insulating somewhat against the sun and protecting against sunburn. A dog or cat pants when it is hot as a means of controlling body temperature, likewise it does not always mean that they are thirsty. There are many types of weeds and dry plant seeds that stick to fur and can cause all sorts of problems between the toes, up the nose, down the ear, or in the eye. If a dip in the sea or the pool is in order remember that we rinse the salt water or chlorine off afterwards, it follows then that our animals get the same treatment. This may help in reducing the all too frequent hot spots or summer eczemas. Over shampooing, even with the mildest of medicated shampoos may cause skin problems rather than resolving them. Make sure in the heat that they have abundant fresh water available and a shady spot to take refuge in. If the water isn’t fit for us to drink we ought to be giving our animals the same bottled water that we use. They should be in a well ventilated area. Remember, if travelling with your dog and having to leave him in the car for a short while, think twice. Even leaving the windows partially open may not provide sufficient cooling properties as shown in the sad case of the two police dogs in England that died, although they had only been left

unattended for just a few minutes. Should you be concerned that your dog or pet is overheating or showing signs of distress, immediate action must be taken to help them. Firstly, cool their feet by hosing him down or placing his feet in a bowl of cold water and secondly, seek professional advice because heat stroke can be fatal. As mentioned above dogs “sweat” or thermoregulate (as we say in the trade) through their feet and by panting and therefore cooling the feet is one of the fastest ways of alleviating their heat distress. It is also important to be aware of the heat irradiated from tarmac, cement, dirt tracks, or beach sand. If you cannot walk comfortably bare-footed over these surfaces it is probably too hot to walk your pet. They can also get burns or blisters on their feet/ paws/hooves. Keeping these few things in mind should make for a more relaxed vacation for all concerned. When in doubt consult a professional.

Con el verano, llegan las medusas

Qué hacer en caso de picadura

El verano ha comenzado, y llega la temporada de baño, pero a medida que el mar se calienta, también llega la amenaza de las medusas, que han estado causando problemas en la costa del Mediterráneo durante los últimos años. Existen numerosas razones por las que el número de medusas ha aumentado. El exceso de pesca ha llevado a la reducción de su depredador natural, el atún, y a una reducción del número de peces más pequeños que compiten con las medusas por el plancton con el que se alimentan. El aumento de la temperatura del mar, junto con una reducción de las corrientes frías que llegan al mar desde los ríos, también ha provocado el aumento de esta plaga. Estas medusas no son solo una molestia que ocasionalmente causan el cierre de las zonas de baño, sino que suponen una seria amenaza para el sector turístico español. Afortunadamente, aquí en España no tenemos que enfrentarnos a los tipos más peligrosos de medusas, como la cubozoa y la avispa de mar, pero su picadura puede ser

Investigaciones médicas recientes han desacreditado una serie de tratamientos resultando en el consejo de que el tratamiento más efectivo es la aplicación de una almohadilla de calor o sumergir la herida en agua caliente (40 grados centígrados). Usando guantes protectores o pinzas, extrae los tentáculos que aún puedan estar en contacto con la piel de la víctima. Un buen enjuague con vinagre de vino blanco desactivará los nematocistos no descargados y la toxina, y ayudará a aliviar los síntomas. Coloca un paño empapado en vinagre sobre la zona afectada (no frotes) durante dolorosa y estropear un buen día en la playa. La mayoría de las picaduras se producen cuando los bañistas entran, accidentalmente, en contacto directo con los tentáculos de la medusa. Las estructuras punzantes de los tentáculos se llaman nematocistos, que están cargados con glándulas de veneno que contienen tubos pequeños, huecos y afilados. Los tubos liberan las toxinas. Los nematocistos se activan con

30 minutos más o menos. Es una buena idea llevar una botella de vinagre y unas pinzas en tu bolso de playa, junto con otros artículos esenciales como la crema solar o una botella de agua. Debe administrarse además un analgésico antiinflamatorio, como el ibuprofeno. Existen numerosos cuentos de viejas relacionados con el tratamiento de las picaduras de medusas, como el orinar sobre la zona afectada. Se nos ha asegurado que esto no sólo es ineficaz, sino también desagradable, y puede ganarnos algunas miradas extrañas de otros bañistas.

Jellyfish - There’s an app for that Summer heralds the jellyfish season

InfoMedusa is a mobile application, developed in both iOS and Android, which reports on the activity of jellyfish on the beaches of Malaga. The increase in jellyfish in recent years on the beaches of the province of Malaga is a concern for both bathers and employers in the tourism sector. This initiative began to take shape in June 2013 and since then has provided information and prevention, including an application for mobile devices, InfoMedusa, which warns users of the presence of these pests, their numbers, variety and potential danger, to avoid annoying stings. InfoMedusa is backed by a network of local observers spanning the Malaga coast, who update the application, including public chat in which anyone with the application can collaborate with their commentary on local conditions. The app provides information on

individual beaches throughout the Province and as well as jellyfish reports it also has reports on weather and sea conditions along with information about what to do if stung. The app can be downloaded for free from www.infomedusa.es as well as the App Store or Google Play Store.

Summer has begun, and the bathing season is upon us, but as the sea warms up so comes the threat of swarms of jellyfish, known as blooms, which have created problems along Mediterranean coasts in recent years. There are a number of reasons for the increase in numbers, over fishing has led to a reduction in their natural predators such as tuna, as well as reducing the number of smaller fish which compete with them for the plankton on which they feed. Rising sea temperatures along with a reduction in cold water flowing into the sea from rivers, has also led to an increase in these pests. These jellyfish blooms are not merely an inconvenience, occasionally causing the closure of bathing areas, but a serious threat to Spain’s tourist industry. Fortunately here in Spain we do not have to cope with the more dangerous types of jellyfish such as the Box Jellyfish and the Sea Wasp, but stings can still be painful and spoil a good day on the beach. Most stings occur when bathers accidentally come into direct contact with the tentacles of jellyfish. The stinging structures on the tentacles are called nematocysts, which are spring loaded venom glands that contain small, hollow, sharp tubes. The tubes release toxin. The nematocysts are triggered by direct physical contact. When human skin comes into contact with a jellyfish, the poison is injected into the outermost layers of skin, causing the toxic reaction of a typical sting.

Most jellyfish stings result in skin eruptions, which appear as a painful, raised, red rash that itches. The rash is usually limited to the area of skin that came into direct contact with the jellyfish.

What to do if stung Recent medical research has debunked a number of treatments with the latest advice being that the most effective treatment is the application of a heat pad, or submerging the wound in hot water (40 degrees centigrade). A good dowsing with white wine vinegar will deactivate undischarged nematocysts and the toxin and will help to decrease symptoms. Place a cloth soaked in the vinegar over the affected area (do not rub it) for 30 minutes or so. It is a good idea to carry a bottle of vinegar and some tweezers in your beach bag, along with other essentials such as sun cream and water. Using protective gloves or tweezers, remove any tentacles still in contact with the victim. An anti-inflammatory painkiller such as Ibuprofen may also be given. There are a number of old wives’ tales regarding the treatment of jellyfish stings, including urinating on the affected area. We are assured that this is not only ineffective, but also unpleasant and may result in some strange looks from your neighbouring bathers.

Signs of a dangerous jellyfish sting Most jellyfish stings are painful, but not dangerous. But for people with jellyfish allergies, individuals with compromised immune systems, the very old, or the very young, a sting can be dangerous. Any signs of shock or an allergic reaction warrant prompt emergency care. Warning signs include: • • • • •

Study casts doubt on 'healthy obesity' Women who are overweight or obese but otherwise healthy are still at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, a large study suggests. The analysis tracked the health of 90,257 women in the US for up to 30 years. Those with excess weight were more likely to have a stroke or heart attack, even if they had normal blood pressure and cholesterol and no diabetes, it found. Researchers said it showed "healthy obesity is not a harmless condition". Obesity affects almost all of the cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as high blood pressure, excess cholesterol and diabetes. But some obese people do not appear to have these metabolic disorders, leading scientists to debate whether or not the excess weight actually raises their risk. This new study found women who were overweight or obese (BMIs in excess of 25 and 30 respectively) but had none of these risk factors were 20% and 39% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than women of a normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9) who were metabolically healthy. However, the authors said it showed an association rather than cause and effect, and was mainly in white women, meaning the findings cannot be generalised to other ethnic groups or men.

"Our large cohort study confirms that metabolically healthy obesity is not a harmless condition, and even women who remain free of metabolic diseases for decades face an increased risk of cardiovascular events," said Prof Matthias Schulze, from the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke, who led the study.
