Bienvenidos a la edición de julio de The Resident. A medida que las playas se llenan y los turistas llegan y todo el mundo se lo pasa en grande, ha habido un par de cosas en las últimas semanas que me han atraído y me han hecho reflexionar sobre lo frágil que puede ser el contentamiento. Hay dos cosas que generalmente las personas más temen, la pérdida de un ser querido o la pérdida de su salud, y fue hace apenas cuatro semanas cuando conocí a Gary Owen, el padre de Michael Owen, que desapareció de la zona de Alborán Hills en Manilva. A pesar de la búsqueda de su familia, amigos, la policía y los servicios de emergencia, todavía no hay señales de Michael. Es difícil imaginar lo horrible que es esto para su familia. La segunda cosa que me detuvo fue una visita de Sarah Almagro Vallejo, de 19 años, a los estudios Mix 106. A la edad de 17 años, Sarah contrajo meningitis, a partir de la cual desarrolló una sepsis que resultó en la amputación de ambas manos y pies. Habiendo conocido a Sarah, no estoy seguro de poder lidiar con esta situación devastadora con la positividad y determinación que muestra esta joven. Ciertamente me ha hecho darme cuenta de que deberíamos estar agradecidos por lo que tenemos, y tal vez reconsiderar cuando lamentemos nuestra suerte en la vida. Así que disfruta del verano y nos vemos el mes que viene.

As the beaches fill up and the holidaymakers pitch up and everybody is having a great time there have been a couple of things over the past few weeks that have pulled me up and made me reflect on just how fragile your contentment can be. There are two things that generally people fear the most, the loss of a loved one, and the loss of their health, and it was just four weeks ago when I met Gary Owen, the father of Michael Owen who has gone missing from the Alboran Hills area of Manilva. Despite a huge appeal, searches by his family, friends, the police and emergency services, there is still no sign of Michael. It is hard to imagine just how awful this is for the family. The second thing to stop me in my tracks was a visit by 19-yearold Sarah Almagro Vallejo to the Mix 106 studios. At the age of 17 Sarah contracted Meningitis, from which she developed sepsis which resulted in the amputation of both her hands and feet! Having met Sarah I’m not sure I could deal with this devastating situation with the positivity and determination that this young girl displays. It has certainly made me realise that you should be thankful for what you have, and maybe reconsider when bemoaning your lot in life. So enjoy your summer and I will see you next month. Casares entrega sus premios solidarios Coincidiendo con el aniversario del nacimiento de Blas Infante, en Casares el 5 de julio de 1885, esta maĂąana su pueblo natal ha hecho entrega de los Premios Solidarios. Una gala que ha contado con la presencia del defensor del pueblo Andaluz, Jesus Maeztu, que preside el jurado de estos premios, que ha destacado el cuidado y mimo que Casares pone para que estos premios sean objetivos, justos y eficaces. Maeztu ha mostrado su admiraciĂłn porque una administraciĂłn local pequeĂąa continĂşe ofreciendo estas subvenciones cuando otras administraciones con mas recurso recortan, y ha dicho que estos premios honran y dignifican al pueblo de Casares. El alcalde, Pepe Carraco ha denunciado las muertes que se producen en el estrecho y el MediterrĂĄneo a causa de la migraciĂłn y ha pedido soluciones a los paĂses de la UE para evitar esta “masacreâ€?. Carrasco tambiĂŠn ha aprovechado el momento para anunciar que desde el Ayuntamiento se estudia un aumento de la partida destinada a estos premios para la prĂłxima ediciĂłn, y ha anunciado una convocatoria municipal de becas para jĂłvenes casareĂąos que quieran viajar para apoyar como cooperantes a ONGs. 50.000 euros en subvenciones Los 50.000 euros con los que el Ayuntamiento de Casares quiere atender a su compromiso de cooperaciĂłn ante los desequilibrios sociales y en pos de la justicia social, sean repartidos de la siguiente forma: Los Premios Blas Infante: Casares Solidario han destinado 40.000 euros a cooperaciĂłn internacional a travĂŠs del premio Casares por la Humanidad y 3 accĂŠsits. El Premio Casares por la Humanidad ha sido para la AsociaciĂłn Al-Quds de Solidaridad con los Pueblos del Mundo Ă rabe. A la AsociaciĂłn para el Fomento de la Intercultura de los Pueblos de la localidad malagueĂąa de RincĂłn De La Victoria, MĂĄlaga) se le adjudicĂł 7.000 euros del segundo AccĂŠsit Blas Infante para el proyecto ÂŤArroz por educaciĂłnÂť de ayuda alimenticia a la escuela pĂşblica para mejorar las condiciones de vida de la poblaciĂłn local de Cachouane (Casamance, Senegal). Mientras que el tercer AccĂŠsit Blas Infante, asigna 4.000 euros a la ONG VidesSur de Sevilla para la rehabilitaciĂłn de las cisternas de agua de las lluvias en la casa Madre Mazzarello, que atiende a niĂąas de familias desestructuradas y necesitadas en Kinshasa, la mayor ciudad de la RepĂşblica DemocrĂĄtica del Congo. En cuanto a EducaciĂłn para el Desarrollo, en el ĂĄmbito regional el Premio Casares por AndalucĂa, la Coordinadora Alternativas del Campo de Gibraltar ha sido subvencionada con 5.000 euros, para un proyecto de ocio sostenible en la barriada Junquillos de La LĂnea. Un proyecto que propone una serie de iniciativas educativas para prevenir que los jĂłvenes se involucren en las redes del narcotrĂĄfico. Por su parte, el Premio Casares por EspaĂąa, dotado con 5.000 euros, fue para Ayudemos a un NiĂąo de Aguadulce (AlmerĂa) que realiza un proyecto educativo en 20 centros educativos de AlmerĂa, MĂĄlaga, Madrid y Navarra, para favorecer un estilo de consumo crĂtico entre los escolares.

Casares presents the Blas Infante Awards Coinciding with the anniversary of the birth of Blas Infante, in Casares on July 5, 1885, his hometown of Casares delivered the Solidarity Awards during a gala that was attended by the defender of the Andalucian people, Jesus Maeztu, who chairs the jury of these awards, which has highlighted the care that Casares takes to make these awards objective, fair and effective. The first of the AccĂŠsit Blas Infante awards a grant of 14,000 euros to the Agua de Coco Foundation of Granada for the vocational training project for the integral development "La Granja Escuela de Mangily", which seeks to improve the health and education of young people and their families at risk of social exclusion in southern Madagascar. The Association for the Promotion of the Interculture of the Towns, based in Rincon De La Victoria, Malaga, was awarded 7,000 euros for the project "Rice for education" providing food aid to the public school and to improve the living conditions of the local population of Cachouane (Casamance, Senegal). 4,000 euros was awarded to the NGO VidesSur de Sevilla for the rehabilitation of rainwater cisterns in the Madre Mazzarello house, which cares for girls from broken families and the needy in Kinshasa, the largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Regarding Education for Development, at the regional level the Casares Award for Andalucia goes to the Alternatives Coordinator of the Campo de Gibraltar which has been subsidized with 5,000 euros, for a sustainable leisure project in the neighborhood of Junquillos de La LĂnea. A project that proposes a series of educational initiatives to prevent young people from getting involved in drug trafficking networks. Casares acoge el 27 de julio su III Nocturna Sierra Crestellina La Carrera Nocturna de Casares supone una excelente ocasión para combinar deporte y diversión. Ya que la prueba deportiva con un recorrido de 12 kilómetros por Sierra Crestellina y otros parajes de la localidad está envuelta en un amplio programa de actividades que comienza a las 15:00 horas en la piscina municipal que abre excepcionalmente de forma gratuita para corredores y acompañantes. La carrera se inicia al atardecer, sobre las 21.40 horas, con un recorrido sin excesiva dificultad técnica. Comienza cruzando el casco histórico para subir a Sierra Crestellina, donde los corredores pueden apreciar excelentes vistas de Casares y el Estrecho de Gibraltar, y por cuyas faldas continúa el recorrido hasta el refugio municipal. Se realiza la bajada por La Consalba y tras cruzar la carretera se toma el camino de la Albarrá para volver a atravesar el casco histórico por la plaza de España de Casares hasta el polideportivo La Huertezuela donde se encuentra la meta. La prueba cuenta con un gran número de voluntarios situados estratégicamente a lo largo del recorrido para guiar a los corredores y atender los diversos puntos de avituallamientos. Esta carrera nocturna, que ha contado con un gran éxito de participación en las dos ediciones anteriores está organizada
por miembros del Club Sierra Bermeja Trail junto a la Concejalía de Deportes del Ayuntamiento de Casares que pone a disposición de los participantes la zona del Polideportivo y la piscina municipal. Tras la llegada, la entrega de trofeos contará con música en directo, barra y la piscina abierta hasta las 2 de la madrugada para los que quieran darse un chapuzón

Casares hosts the III Nocturna Sierra Crestellina on July 27 The Casares Night Race is an excellent opportunity to combine sport and fun. As the sporting event with a distance of 12 kilometers through Sierra Crestellina and other places in the town is part of an extensive programme of activities that begins at 3 pm in the municipal pool that is free for runners and their guests. The race starts at dusk, around 9.40 pm, with a fairly easy route. The starting in the old town centre the runners proceed to climb the Sierra Crestellina, where they can see excellent views of Casares and the Strait of Gibraltar. The descent is made through La Consalba and after crossing the road you take the Albarrá path to go back to the old town, through the Plaza de España de Casares to the La Huertezuela sports centre where the finish is located. The trial has a large number of volunteers strategically located along the route to guide the runners and attend the various refreshment points. This night race, which has proven popular in the two previous editions is organized by members of the Sierra Bermeja Trail Club with the Casares Sports Council, which makes available to the
participants the Sports area and the local pool. After the finish, and the trophy ceremony, there will be live music, a bar and the pool open until 2am for those who want to take a dip.

Comienza la redacción del proyecto de otro parking para 600 vehículos a un precio de un euro al día El alcalde de Estepona, José María García Urbano, ha firmado hoy el contrato para la redacción del proyecto básico y de ejecución del futuro aparcamiento subterráneo que el Ayuntamiento construirá en la plaza del Ajedrez. El parking tendrá un funcionamiento similar al de la plaza Antonia Guerrero con un precio de un euro al día. Asimismo, se posibilitará la opción de compra para los residentes. La empresa encargada de la redacción de este proyecto será la Unión Temporal de Empresas (UTE) Abalo Arquitectura e Ingeniería S.L – Comedap Ingeniería S.L, que tendrá un plazo máximo de tres meses para la redacción del proyecto básico y una vez finalizado éste, otros dos meses para confeccionar el proyecto de ejecución. El proyecto básico de redacción contempla todos los trabajos técnicos de topografía, geotecnia, estudios de tráfico, seguridad y salud, cálculos estructurales, entre otros. Por su parte, el proyecto de ejecución describe de forma completa los detalles y especificaciones de todos los materiales, sistemas constructivos, equipos, memoria de cimentación, estructura y oficios, así como los planos de cimentación y estructura y planos de detalle, entre otras cuestiones. Una vez presentados ambos proyectos, el Consistorio licitará
el pliego de condiciones para la adjudicación de la obra. El aparcamiento subterráneo de la Plaza del Ajedrez contará con 600 estacionamientos divididos en dos plantas, lo que supondrá una superficie construida de 15.000 metros cuadrados en total. Las obras proyectadas contemplan también la renovación y mejora de las infraestructuras existentes en la calles anexas a esta plaza como Mallorca, Menorca y Francisco Guitiérrez. Entre las actuaciones que se acometerán se encuentra el embellecimiento de la superficie de la plaza y de las zonas ajardinadas, mejoras en
la red de saneamiento con un nuevo colector de aguas fecales y pluviales que atiendan las demandas actuales, reposición de los elementos deteriorados en la red de abastecimiento de agua, una nueva red de alumbrado público, reparación y reposición de los servicios de electricidad, así como mejoras en las infraestructuras de telecomunicaciones y en la red de distribución de gas natural. Esta actuación en la Plaza del Ajedrez será la continuación de la remodelación integral que se está llevando a cabo en la avenida de Andalucía, una de las principales arterias del municipio

El Ayuntamiento informa de que han dado comienzo los trabajos de mejora del entorno de la playa del Cristo, que incluyen la ejecución de un acceso viario, la creación de una zona verde de 3.000 metros cuadrados y un nuevo tramo de corredor litoral, que permitirá seguir conectando el litoral mediante sendas peatonales. Con este proyecto, se garantiza, además, que se pueda poner en valor el paisaje de uno de los enclaves más privilegiados de la ciudad. Las obras tienen un plazo de ejecución de tres meses.
Los trabajos, que han sido adjudicados a la UTE Bermeja Beach Estepona, cuentan con un presupuesto de 506.627 euros; si bien, no supondrán ningún coste para las arcas municipales porque el Ayuntamiento los va a ejecutar de forma subsidiaria con el aval depositado por la empresa responsable del desarrollo de este sector. Asimismo, el Ayuntamiento señala que han agilizado los trámites para poder disponer del aval que depositó la responsable del sector para desbloquear la ejecución de estas áreas públicas que corresponden
al desarrollo de esta zona. Por otra parte, con este proyecto en el entorno de la playa del Cristo se garantiza que en el futuro no puedan construirse edificaciones en altura, por lo que las futuras generaciones podrán seguir disfrutando de estas vistas únicas.

El Ayuntamiento y los chiringuitos de Estepona lanzan la campaña ‘Las orillas sin colillas’ El Ayuntamiento de Estepona y los chiringuitos de la ciudad han presentado hoy la campaña medioambiental ‘Las orillas sin colillas’, una iniciativa pionera en el municipio que tiene como objetivo evitar que los restos de tabaco acaben contaminando nuestras aguas. La concejala adscrita al área de Playas, Susana Aragón, ha explicado que, para incentivar
la limpieza en el litoral, los chiringuitos regalarán un refresco o una cerveza a las personas que entreguen un vaso lleno con colillas que hayan recogido en la arena o al mar. La edil ha indicado que con esta campaña se pretende concienciar a la ciudadanía sobre la importancia de mantener limpias las playas
y ha destacado que cada colilla que se deposita en la arena o en la orilla puede contaminar hasta 50 litros de agua. Además, la composición química de los cigarros hace que tarden hasta 10 años en degradarse, lo que provoca daños tanto en los fondos marinos como en las especies que los habitan. Aragón ha indicado que esta acción que se va a llevar a cabo con los chiringuitos pretende hacer reflexionar a los usuarios de las playas sobre la repercusión que tienen las malas prácticas de los humanos en el medioambiente. Por este motivo, la delegación municipal de Turismo ha elaborado un spot que se emitirá en redes sociales y en los medios municipales para informar sobre la necesidad de que las personas fumadoras no dejen restos de tabaco en las playas. Por otra parte, Óscar Rulli, representante de la Asociación de Chiringuitos de Málaga (ACHIMA), ha agradecido al Consistorio la puesta en marcha de esta iniciativa que tendrá lugar desde el 22 de julio hasta el 15 de agosto. Los chiringuitos participantes estarán señalizados con el cartel de la campaña ‘Las orillas sin colillas”. Asimismo, ha reiterado la necesidad de que los ciudadanos se impliquen en mantener limpias las playas, ya que la contaminación que generan acaba afectando a las especies marinas y al resto de la cadena alimentaria.

El Ayuntamiento programa más de un centenar de actividades para el ‘Verano Cultural 2019’ Estepona han presentado el programa del ‘Verano Cultural 2019’, que incluye más de un centenar de actividades dirigidas a todo tipo de público. La variedad y calidad de los conciertos y actuaciones que este año se celebrarán en la localidad, la mayor parte de ellos en espacios al aire libre, entre los que ha destacado las actividades programadas para homenajear el 500 aniversario de la muerte del genio del Renacimiento Leonardo Da Vinci, el espectáculo flamenco de Sara Baras, el musical de ‘La Familia Addams’ uno de los más importantes de los últimos años y de los más premiados, el concierto de Pastora Soler, el festival de Los Álamos que vuelve a Estepona después del éxito del pasado año y la XX Semana de Cine Fantástico, entre otros. El Ayuntamiento también ha querido dar su espacio a los más pequeños con la programación de diferentes actividades como un taller de cocina, otro destinado a aprender valores de familia, la II Feria Expoclick, un concurso de dibujo enmarcado en el homenaje al genial Da Vinci, el concierto de Adexe & Nau, el musical del Rey León, teatro y cine.
Homenaje a Leonardo Da Vinci
Dado que este año se conmemora el 500 Aniversario de la muerte del genio italiano Leonardo Da Vinci, el Ayuntamiento ha querido homenajearlo utilizando un retrato del artista en la portada del libro de la programación cultural. Además, habrá un concurso de dibujo para jóvenes de 6 a 16 años; una conferencia sobre la faceta pictórica del artista; se proyectará la película “Leo Da Vinci, Misión Mona Lisa”; para concluir con un concierto de acordeón y clarinete inspirado en su figura, en colaboración con la Fundación García Fajer.

En cuanto a musicales, ‘La Familia Addams’ estará en el Auditorio Felipe VI del 18 al 21 de julio con un total de 7 representaciones. Con un magnífico elenco encabezado por Carmen Conesa, se trata de uno de los musicales más importantes de los últimos años, y de los más premiados, apto para todos los públicos. Por otra parte, el 9 de agosto la Orquesta Sinfónica Ciudad de Jaén ofrecerá un original recital en el que interpretarán la música de la banda sonora de la mítica serie ‘Juego de Tronos’. Además, este recinto cultural acogerá del 9 de agosto al 15 de septiembre la exposición ‘Fuego y Sangre’ dedicada a ‘Juego de Tronos’. Lapso Producciones presentará los días 2 y 3 de agosto, ‘Clásicos Excéntricos’, una producción que acercará la música clásica a todos los públicos, pero de una manera diferente. 18 conciertos de música instrumental
A partir del 14 de julio, la Banda Municipal de Música ofrecerá sus tradicionales conciertos monográficos cada domingo en la emblemática Plaza del Reloj y las distintas academias y escuelas municipales de baile realizarán un total de 12 actuaciones en diferentes espacios públicos como el Parque Botánico-Orquidario, la
Plaza Antonia Guerrero, la Plaza ABC o el parque El Calvario. En Cancelada, la Banda Unión Musical VERA+CRUZ interpretará un concierto el sábado, 20 de julio, formado por un repertorio de temas variados. Fiel a su cita con Estepona, la Filarmónica de Cámara de Colonia interpretará selectas obras de grandes maestros de la música el 24 de julio, en el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel. Por su parte, la Fundación García Fajer ha programado 4 conciertos durante el verano. El primero será el 18 de julio en la plaza nueva entre la calle Real y la calle Málaga, y cerrará la programación el 27 de septiembre, con el Concierto Inaugural del Centro Internacional para la formación de profesionales de alto nivel en instrumentos de cuerda. Por otro lado, la escalera del Parque Botánico-Orquidario, quedará iluminado con 200 velas el 7 de agosto durante el concierto de bandas sonoras que ofrecerá el reconocido concertista de piano y compositor David Gómez. Por último, destacar la Gala de Zarzuela (15 de agosto) en la Plaza de Toros, con la soprano Mariola Cantarero, el tenor José Luis Sola y el barítono Damián del Castillo.

La playa de La Escollera volverá a ser este año escenario del evento gratuito ‘Escollera Fest’ (del 25 al 27 de julio), con la actuación de ‘Remember Queen’ (Tributo a Queen el día 25), ‘Maldito Blues’ y Dennis Mansfeld (día 26) y la XIX Noche Reggae, ‘Homenaje a Bob Marley’, con Leroy Onestone, Wise House Crew y Mlakayou (el día 27). Tras el gran éxito del pasado año, vuelve a Estepona el festival de música de referencia en el sur de España. ‘Los Álamos Beach Festival’ celebrará del 31 de julio al 4 de agosto su quinta edición en el Parque Ferial y Deportivo con más de 50 artistas internacionales de música urbana y electrónica, con artistas como Oliver Heldens, Sunney James & Ryan Marciano, Karol G. Fangoria, Juanito Makandé y muchos más.
Gastronomía y música
Otra de las actividades que más interés despierten será el VI Certamen Mundial de Jamón Ciudad de Estepona, que se celebrará del 9 al 15 de agosto en el Paseo Marítimo, donde se volverán a reunir las mejores empresas de productos ibéricos del país, y el ‘Jamón Music Festival’. Este año se ofrecerán siete conciertos gratuitos con ‘Bordon 4’, Rafael Cremades, Dani Márquez, Rocío Cortés y Fran Bravo, Piratas Flamencos y Valerie Blue, y Los Centellas. Otro festival relacionado con la gastronomía y la música será el ‘10 Wineing Street’, que se celebrará en la plaza del Reloj durante los días 12 y 13 de julio. Dos días de Turismo, Vino, Gastronomía y Música de la mano de Take a Wine y la Asociación Española de Enoturismo, que incluye dos catas exclusivas de la Cofradía del Vino de Rioja.

Por lo que respecta al cine, la XX Semana Internacional de Cine Fantástico girará en torno a su vigésimo aniversario. Se celebrará del 8 al 14 de septiembre en el Auditorio Felipe VI, y estará precedida por la exposición “Fuego y Sangre” con todo tipo de obje-
tos de la serie “Juego de Tronos”. Este año contaremos con la presencia del actor Javier Botet, muy conocido en el cine fantástico por su participación en ‘Juego de Tronos’, con Javier Sierra, escritor galardonado con el Premio Planeta, y Silvia Tortosa, que este año recibirá el Unicornio de Honor.
Literatura Los aficionados a la literatura podrán disfrutar durante más días de la Feria del Libro en el Paseo Marítimo. Este año se prolongará del 25 de julio al 8 de septiembre, y será inaugurada con la presentación de la biografía del barítono internacional afincado en Estepona, David Geary. Más de 80.000 títulos de todos los estilos estarán al alcance de los lectores. Una opción cultural cuya principal característica es que el 90 por ciento de los libros no supera los cinco euros. Entre otras publicaciones que tendrán lugar durante el verano, el 6 de septiembre, el doctor Manuel Álvarez Romero y el psiquiatra José Ignacio del Pino presentarán en el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel el libro ‘Reflexiones con la bata puesta’, una divulgación tendente a favorecer la salud a través del arte de vivir.

La programación infantil dará inicio el 10 de julio con un taller de cocina para niños entre 7 y 12 años, que tendrá lugar en el Laboratorio de la Creatividad, en la Avenida Mar y Sierra. El Paseo Marítimo acogerá los días 20 y 21 de julio la segunda Feria Expoclick. Después del éxito del años pasado, la magia de los muñecos de Playmobil volverán a hacer las delicias de niños y mayores. Pensando en el público infantil y familiar, el Grupo de Teatro “Farándula” de la delegación de Cultura realizará una adaptación de cuentos infantiles populares en el IV Maratón Infantil de Cuentos. Este año, tendrá doble celebración: el 30 de julio en la Plaza José Vázquez, en Cancelada, y el 31 en el Parque Botánico Orquidario. Agosto dará inicio con el concierto del Dúo Adexe & Nau, el 9 de agosto en la Plaza de Toros. Con su música urbana, los jóvenes hermanos canarios se han convertido en uno de los mayores fenómenos musicales de España y América Latina de los últimos años. Dos días después, el 11 de agosto, llegara a la Plaza de Toros el espectáculo ‘El Rey León. El Tributo’. Como recoge el programa, con motivo del homenaje al 500 centenario de la muerte del genio italiano Leonardo Da Vinci, se va a convocar el concurso de dibujo ‘500 Años con Leonardo’ para jóvenes de 6 a 16 años, cuyas bases podrán ser consultadas en la web del Ayuntamiento. El premio para el ganador será una noche de hotel para cuatro personas de la familia, con spa, cena y desayuno, en el hotel ONA Valle Romano. Este homenaje también incluye la proyección de la película de dibujos animados “Leo Da Vinci, Misión Mona Lisa” , que narra las aventuras del joven Leonardo. Será el 22 de agosto en el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel.
Dentro del marco de la Semana Internacional de Cine Fantástico Días, unos días antes de su inicio, el 6 de septiembre se proyectará en la Plaza del Reloj la película “Dragon Ball Súper: Broly”, una de las cuatro cintas japonesas de animación que se podrán ver en el festival, dentro de la Sección Selecta Visión. Y para finalizar, el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel acogerá el 26 de septiembre el taller gratuito “Aprendiendo valores en familia” y la presentación del canal YUPI TV de educación infantil en valores.
Ajedrez
Como cada verano, la Escuela Municipal de Ajedrez celebrará partidas rápidas de ajedrez y partidas gigantes en los tableros de gran formato del Paseo Marítimo. La actividad “Juega con Nosotros” es gratuita y está abierta a todo el público que lo desee, y se llevará a cabo del 9 de julio al 23 de agosto, de 19:30 a 22:30 horas, bajo la supervisión del profesor de la EMAE, Miguel Abril. Los días 18 de julio y 8 y 22 de agosto, se celebrarán los torneos “Noches de Ajedrez”, y el 27 de julio, el XXXIV Nocturno de Ajedrez “Ciudad de Estepona”, valedero para el XXV Circuito Provincial de Ajedrez “Diputación de Málaga”.
Moda
La moda vuelve a Estepona del 17 al 21 de septiembre. Bajo la dirección del estilista Pepe Grimaldi, una quincena de establecimientos locales ofrecerán la novedades de moda y complementos a las 20:00 horas, en el Paseo Marítimo. Antes de los desfiles del martes al viernes, el asesor de imagen Miguel Toledo realizará una demostración de “Prueba de Color”. Asimismo, el sábado 21, a las 11:00 horas, llevará a cabo un taller de “Asesoramiento de imagen” en el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel, con asistencia gratuita hasta completar aforo.

l alcalde de Estepona, José María García Urbano, ha asistido a la inauguración de un nuevo mural artístico ubicado en una de las fachadas principales del centro deportivo José Ramón de la Morena. Se trata de una pintura en la que se representa una secuencia de personas practicando distintas disciplinas deportivas, todas ellas relacionadas con los deportes que se imparten en estas instalaciones. Es una obra de gran impacto visual por sus dimensiones, más de 30 metros de largo y más de 4 de alto, además de por su
colorido y el movimiento que ha sabido plasmar el autor a
través de la utilización de líneas curvas.

El plazo de inscripción finalizará el 15 de agosto de 2018 a las 14:00 horas, o una vez completadas las 500 plazas que se ofertan, ya que son varios años en los que la participación supera ampliamente los 400 triatletas. Programación de la Fiesta de la Luna Llena La noche del sábado 20 de julio, como indicó la delegada de turismo Eva Galindo, los que decidan disfrutar con esta ya tradicional fiesta veraniega se encontrarán con una decoración especial para una noche que se quedará en el recuerdo de todos los que decidan disfrutarla y a los que se les pide que vengan vestidos de blanco. Las actividades darán comienzo a las 5 de
la tarde con animación infantil. A partir de las 7 de la tarde la zumba, así como otras actividades inundarán el paseo marítimo de Sabinillas. A las nueve de la noche se contará además con un pasacalles temático para tan mágica velada. Como novedad este año, se ha preparado un espectáculo aéreo con diferentes pases que tendrán lugar a lo largo de la noche en la plaza del Cali. Esa velada habrá tres escenarios. El principal estará ubicado en la plaza del Cali, los otros dos frente al Restaurante Miramar y el Restaurante La Orilla. Cada uno de ellos contará con distintas temáticas. Así en uno se podrá presenciar a un cuarteto de jazz, en otro un dj con un violinista y en el central después de la cuenta atrás de las doce de la noche, el concierto de Les Castizos. Tras ellos la música continuará hasta la madrugada. Galindo recordó que está totalmente prohibida la suelta de globos durante la celebración de la fiesta de la Luna Llena. También añadió que con motivo de esta celebración, el mismo paseo marítimo de Sabinillas, acogerá del 19 al 21 de julio, un mercado de artesanía, donde los visitantes podrán pasear y comprar la diversidad de productos que estarán a su disposición. Este se inaugurará el viernes 19 de julio con una Batukada y fuegos, cerrándose el domingo de la misma manera.

Full Moon Party 2019 This year’s Luna Llena (Full Moon) Party will be held on the night of Saturday, July 20. This traditional summer party is marked by an evening of music and fun with attendees encouraged to come dressed all in white. The activities will start at 5 in the afternoon with children's entertainment. From 7 in the afternoon there zumba, as well as other activities which will flood the seafront of Sabinillas. At nine o'clock in the evening this magical evening will be marked by a parade along the Paseo. New this year is an aerial spectacle that will take place throughout the night in the Plaza del Cali. There will be three music stages. The main one
will be located in Plaza del Cali, the other two in front of Miramar Restaurant and La Orilla Restaurant. Each one of them will have different themes. ¡El verano está aquí! Nos vamos pa la playa o pa la piscina! Hemos escrito sobre las piscinas en artículos anteriores, pero la legislación cambia constantemente y estos cambios afectan a nuestras comunidades, la forma en que los gestionamos y el uso que nuestros propietarios pueden hacer de las piscinas que tenemos en nuestras urbanizaciones. Durante muchos años ha habido urbanizaciones con muchas viviendas vacías, y los propietarios han podidos disfrutar de piscinas ‘casi vacías’ durante todo el verano, pero ahora, a medida que estas propiedades se venden o alquilan, está creciendo esta ocupación, y las comunidades tienen un aforo limitado que en muchos casos no se cumple, y que es un requisito de seguridad según el tamaño de la piscina. No hay forma de vigilar el aforo, esta no es tarea del Administrador ni del Presidente, por lo tanto, a menos que la Comunidad tenga personal de seguridad contratado, tenemos que depender del respeto y del civismo de los usuarios y, lamentablemente, estas cualidades suelen brillar por su ausencia en muchas comunidades ‘vacacionales’. Así que si la piscina está llena, pa la playa que nos vamos! Siempre tenga en cuenta que la seguridad es la principal prioridad en una comunidad y que las normas vigentes son para su seguridad y especialmente para la de sus hijos. Los requisitos básicos que debe satisfacer cada piscina son: • Vallas de piscinas: la piscina debe estar vallada y

cerrada con llave cuando está cerrada, la valla puede rodear el vaso en sí, o incluir una parte del jardín o terraza de la Comunidad. Esta valla debe tener una altura mínima de 1,2 m, aguantar el peso de una persona de 60kg y que no quepa una pelota de tenis por los huecos para que un niño no lo pueda escalar. La valla tipo ‘gallinero’ no cumple! Socorristas: Si la superficie total de la piscina o de todas las piscinas sumadas es mayor a 200 metros cuadrados, entonces es obligatorio que haya un socorrista. Accesibilidad universal: necesitas poder acceder a la piscina, los baños, de los cuales 1 debe ser para minusválidos, se debe poder circular alrededor de la piscina y acceder a la piscina (debe haber una escalinata de peldaños) con una silla de ruedas. La playa de la piscina debe medir un mínimo de 1,20 metros. Las normas de la piscina que haya en el tablón hay que cumplirlas, no puede usarse cristal en el recinto, ni comida, no se puede saltar, no se pueden usar inflables, no se puede fumar, etc. (todas estas normas son requisitos legales o de sentido común), son para proteger a todos los usuarios de la piscina.. Vuestra piscina necesita dosificadores automáticos de
cloro y ph, no pueden utilizarse las pastillas de cloro tradicionales. El personal de mantenimiento debe tener un curso especifico para piscinas y deben analizar el agua todos los días, y un laboratorio externo debe analizarlo mínimo una vez al mes. Lo que suelo escuchar cuando enfatizo en la importancia de cumplir con la legislación de piscinas es ‘la piscina de al lado no tiene valla’ y mi respuesta es ‘si otro se tira de un barranco, te tirarías tu detrás?’. La legislación esta para protegernos a nosotros y a nuestras familias, solo porque estemos en España y que muchos consideren que somos más ‘relajados’ con las aplicaciones legislativas, esto no quiere decir que podamos ignorar los requisitos legales. Si vuestra piscina no cumple con
la legislación vigente y hay un accidente, el Presidente, como representante legal de la Comunidad, puede verse responsabilizado penalmente, con 3-5 anos de prisión por negligencia, además de una enorme multa, que puede ser de cientos de miles de euros, que deberá pagar la Comunidad, mucho más de lo que costaría cumplir con la ley. El lado positivo de todo esto es que la Comunidad puede aprobar una limitación temporal de uso de la piscina para los morosos, mientras estén en mora, por lo que estas personas y sus invitados no podrían utilizar la piscina mientras que no paguen. Esto hay que aprobarlo por unanimidad en una Junta General e incluirse en los Estatutos de la Comunidad para que sea legalmente vinculante para todos los propietarios presentes y futuros.
El verano ya está aquí, así que si vuestra piscina no cumple, intentad por lo menos que las medidas de seguridad se estén cumpliendo y aseguraos de que la calidad del agua sea buena (en realidad si no cumple, lo que habría que hacer seria cerrarla) Recordad que la licencia de obras es necesaria para poder realizar cualquier trabajo, por lo que estos proyectos demoran un tiempo en realizarse. Si comenzáis con los trámites ahora, para el verano que viene, tendréis una piscina legal, segura y accesible para el disfrute de todos los propietarios y visitantes. The summer is here! Pool time or Beach time!
We have written about community pools before, but the legislation does change constantly and these changes affect our communities, the way we run them and the use that our owners can make of the pools that we have onsite. For many years there have been urbanizations with very low occupancy, who have been able to enjoy ‘nearly empty pools’ all summer, but now, as these properties are being sold or rented, the occupancy is sky high, and pools do have a limited quorum that is a safety requirement depending on the size of the pool itself. There is no way for the quorum to be policed, it is not the Administrator’s job or the President’s, so unless the Community has security, we have to depend on peoples respect and good behaviour, and sadly, many holidaymakers lack in both of these. So, if the pool is full, to the beach we go! Always take into account that safety is the main priority in a Community and that the rules are in place for your safety and especially for that of your children! The basic requirements that every pool needs to satisfy are: • Pool fences: the pool area needs to be fenced off and locked so it is inaccessible when
closed;the fence can be around the pool itself or can include the pool and part of the garden or terrace. This fence has to have a minimum height of 1.2m, be sturdy (hold 60kg of force) and with gaps no larger than a tennis ball, so it cannot be climbed easily by a child. Chicken wire fences are no good! • Lifeguards: If the surface area of your pool, or the total surface area of all your pools, is more than 200sqm, regardless of the depth, you must have a lifeguard on duty during opening hours. • Universal accessibility: you need to be able to access the pool, the toilets (there must be 1 disabled one), the area around the pool and the pool itself (there have to be steps into the pool and a disabled hoist) with a wheelchair, and the area surrounding the pool must be1.2m wide. • The pool rules on the notice board must be adhered to at all times, no glass in the pool area, no food, no jumping in, no inflatables, no smoking, etc (each and every pool rule exists due to legal requirements or common sense), they are in place solely to protect pool users. • Your pool needs to have digitally controlled automatic pumps for the chlorine and acid products which are used, so chlorine tablets cannot be placed in the pool by hand. Maintenance personnel need to be certified and they must test the water every day, with an registered laboratory required to test the water a minimum of once a month. What I tend to hear when I stress the importance of statutory compliance are comments such as “the community next door hasn’t got a fence”. My
answer is ‘would you jump off a cliff if someone else did!’. The legislation is in place to protect us and our families, just because we are in Spain, and people consider it a ‘relaxed country’ when it comes to regulatory enforcement, it does not mean that we can ignore legal requirements. If your pool does not comply with the legislation and there is an accident, the President, as the legal representative of the Community, can be found criminally responsible, and even face between 3 to 5 years in prison for gross negligence, this would be on top of the huge fine that the Community would face, and we are talking hundreds of thousands of Euros, much more than it would cost to comply with the law. On the upside, the Community can approve a limitation of use of the pool area for debtors, so if you do not pay your fees, you, and your guests, will not be able to use the pool. This has to be unanimously approved at a general meeting and included in the community statutes so that it is legally binding on all present and future owners. The summer is here now, so if your pool does not comply, at least try to make it safe and make sure the water is suitable (when a pool doesn’t comply, it should be closed). Remember that you will need a building license from the town hall to carry out any works in the pool and pool area, so these projects take some time to be carried out. If you start now, you will have a fully legal, safe and accessible pool by next summer. Acuerdo de colaboración entre el Ayuntamiento y Adana para la protección animal La delegada de Medio Ambiente, Ecología y Protección Animal, Laura López, acompañada del primer teniente de alcalde, Diego José Jiménez, visitaron la protectora de animales, Adana, ubicada en la zona de los Pedregales en Estepona, para reunirse con los representantes de esta entidad. Mary Page, presidenta de la asociación y Reg Winkworth, mostraron a los representantes municipales las instalaciones en las que se encuentran los animales que están acogidos hasta su posterior adopción. Laura López, se mostró sorprendida ante la limpieza de las instalaciones y el buen trabajo
que realizan los voluntarios, a fin de que los perros allí acogidos se encuentren en perfecto estado. Como informó la edil, Adana es autosuficiente en cuanto a suministros, ya que se surte de luz eléctrica a través de placas solares y el agua es también de procedencia natural. Tanto López como Jiménez, han comunicado que se mantendrán próximos encuentros para la redacción de un convenio que garantice, que además de la recogida de los animales abandonados en nuestro municipio, se pueda crear una red de voluntarios en el término para ayudar en la protección de los derechos animales y colaborar
con esta entidad sin ánimo de lucro. Adana mantiene varias líneas para ayudar a los animales que han sido abandonados, como el apadrinamiento de los mismos o por habitaciones, lo que sirve para que puedan seguir realizando su labor. El Ayuntamiento de Manilva pretende también a través de este convenio poder ayudar en la medida de sus posibilidades a Adana, en su labor de protección de los muchos animales que desgraciadamente son abandonados cada día. Diego José Jiménez resaltó que esta concejalía de Medio Ambiente, Ecología y Protección Animal, tratará de impulsar estas ayudas teniendo en cuenta la sensibilidad que se ha de tener hacia estos seres vivos. Es por ello, que la delegación que dirige Laura López, se empleará a fondo para conseguir los mejores resultados. De hecho para las próximas semanas, la edil pretende mantener un encuentro con la asociación de gatos de Manilva, para resolver un asunto que afecta a los felinos, que en su mayoría viven en colonias en nuestra localidad, para impulsar nuevos acuerdos y soluciones y con ello conseguir el sacrificio cero de estos animales.
Collaboration agreement between the Manilva Town Council and Adana The Councillor for Environment, Ecology and Animal Protection, Laura Lopez, accompanied by Councillor, Diego José Jiménez, visited the animal protection association, Adana, located in the Los Pedregales area of Estepona, to meet with the representatives of this charity. Mary Page, president of the association and Reg Winkworth, gave the visitors a tour of the facilities in which the animals are sheltered until their subsequent adoption. Laura Lopez, was surprised at the cleanliness of the facilities and the good work done by the volunteers, to keep the dogs in perfect condition. The councillors were impressed to
find that Adana is self-sufficient for power and water, as it is supplied with electricity through solar panels and water from a natural source. Both López and Jiménez, have stated that future meetings will be held for the drafting of an agreement that guarantees, that in addition to the collection of abandoned animals in our municipality, a network of volunteers can be created to help in the protection of animal rights and collaborate with this charity. Adana maintains several means to help the animals that have been abandoned, such as the sponsorship of the animals or of kennels, which helps them to continue carrying out
their work. Manilva also intends, through this agreement, to be able to help Adana as much as possible, in its work of protecting the many animals that are unfortunately abandoned every day. Diego José Jiménez stressed that the Department of Environment, Ecology and Animal Protection, will work to promote help needed to protect these animals. In the coming weeks, the councillor also intends to hold a meeting with the Manilva Cats Association, to resolve an issue that affects the cats, who mostly live in colonies in our town, to promote new agreements and find solutions to the problems.

I WISH TO PURCHASE A PROPERTY IN COSTA DEL SOL BEING A FOREIGNER. FREQUENT QUESTIONS AND DOUBTS PART II In the first part of this article we clarified the most common questions regarding when a foreigner wishes to purchase a property in Spain. We know that purchasing a real estate property is not a difficult task, but it does involve further legal and tax implications the most common of which we will try to clarify in this, the second part of the article. 1. - Is it recommendable to use a conveyance solicitor? It is the buyer’s decision whether to use a solicitor or not, but there are many reasons why you should contract the professional services of a Spanish solicitor specialist in real estate law. A solicitor knows better than anybody the local laws and taxes, therefore it is highly recommended that you contact one as it will ensure a smoother, trouble free and 100 % secure purchase process. 2. - What information do I have to get about the property before purchasing it? Before buying a property in Spain, there are some basic checks and searches to be carried out: e.g.: - confirm the name of the legal owner;check if there are any possible charges or mortgages on the property; ensure that there aren’t any debts i.e. local taxes and utilities bills; etc. The key is to carry out searches in the local council and in the Land Registry in order to get updated information on the property and to confirm that everything is correct, and that the property can be purchased without any problems. The solicitor is the right person to do these searches and to confirm that the property is in good legal order and that it is ready to be purchased. In a case where the property is part of an urbanization, it is essential that the community of owners confirms that the property is up to date with the community charges. Otherwise, the buyer could be obliged to take responsibility for any previous debts. 3. - Which documents do I need to purchase a property in Spain? Buying a property in Spain is simple. The only documents required are an original, valid, (i.e. not expired), passport or identity card, to confirm the identity of the buyer; and an NIE number (Tax Identification number for Foreigner), which can be obtained in the police offices in Spain. It is quite an easy procedure. Please, also be aware that in order to transfer the necessary funds to pay the purchase price, it is essential that the buyer has a Spanish bank account. Most Law offices have a “clients account” for this purpose, so the buyer who uses a solicitor will only need a personal bank account once the purchase has been completed. 4. - Once the purchase is completed, do I have to do any further paperwork? When the purchase deed has been signed in front of a Public Notary, it is necessary to pay the Transfer Taxes (8 % of the purchase price) within 30 days, and to take the title deeds to the land registry so the ownershipcan be registered. The contracts for, water, electricity, local taxes and community fees would all need to be changed to the name of the buyer; also standing orders would have to be arranged to cover future bills.A solicitor would be able to arrange all ofthese matters in a speedy manner, without problems- Another good reason for hiring a solicitor when buying your property in Spain. As part of the Radio Mix expansion into online broadcasting and podcasting the station will be adding a number of new channels to our schedules one of which will be Radio Mix 3 - Mix Unchained. Mix Unchained will be inviting people to submit proposals for programmes that they would like
to put together and present, the programmes could be on any subject or genre - talk show or music, it could be ‘Hit Mongolian Throat Songs of the Nineties’, or ‘Llama Breeding in the Andes’, whatever you like as long as you have a passion for it. We can provide the recording facilities at our studios, training and
advice as to how to put together an interesting show, or if you have your own facilities even better. You can do a one off show or a monthly, weekly or even daily show depending on what you can commit to. Programmes will be broadcast on our Mix 3 live stream schedule, due to be launched in January, after which they will added to our listen on-demand service ‘Mix Reloaded’. Both the live stream and Mix Reloaded are available to a global audience and we will promote all shows through our website and the appropriate social media. We are not looking for Sixties Hits, Golden Eighties, or any of the tena-penny generic syndicated type shows, but are looking to cover a wide and varied spectrum of interests. Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva This is an appeal for donations of items that Age Concern can sell in their charity shop situated in Calle Zaragoza, Estepona. Quality Brica-Brac is urgently needed to complement the wide range of clothing on sale. The shop is run by volunteers and is open Monday to Friday, and the first Saturday in the month, hoping to be open every Saturday from September. However, the shop will be closed for the whole of August to allow staff to have a well earned rest and enjoy the delights of the town and surrounding countryside. We reopen on Monday 2nd September. There are now pedestrianised areas for the summer in the town making vehicle access to our shop more difficult, but by no means impossi-
ble. As the lower part of Calle Terraza is pedestrianised, you can reach the underground car park in Plaza Antonia Guerrero and our shop in Calle Zaragoza by turning on to Camino de los Molinos from Avenida Andalucia at the new roundabout by the farmacia. Proceed down on to Avenida Valencia until you reach the Church of San José where you turn right onto Calle Goya. At the 3rd junction turn left onto Calle Terraza and proceed to the underground car park which is just after the turning on the left into Calle Zaragoza. Obituary - Eileen Dry
Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva, has suffered a great loss as Eileen Dry passed away last week following a progressive illness over recent years. Eileen devoted a large part of her life to helping older people in the communities where she lived. In Spain she originally worked for the charity Concordia and became involved in 2003 with the setting up Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva. Eileen became President following Barry Hands who retired through ill health in 2006. She then became President of Age Concern España and guided local Age Concerns in the work they were responsible for including organisational activities. Eileen dealt with many Age Concern clients over the years giving them advice, information and hope in a caring and sympathetic way. So many people are grateful to her for her ability to help when needed. Eileen will be missed by Age Concern and her family. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication Eileen. Rest in Peace.

Summertime Now that the weather has started to realise that summer is here, it is time to put out a reminder about the effects of heat and how to combat them. People who live here like the sun and think that they can acclimatise to it, but everyone needs to be aware of the dangers of the ferocious heat and the debilitating effects that can have. Elderly people often feel the heat more than younger people and can suffer severe dehydration if simple precautions are not taken (and these also apply to people of all ages particularly children). It is important to get used to the heat and humidity slowly, particularly before physical exertion. Try and avoid sitting or walking in direct sunlight, seek shade at all times; if unavoidable cover up well and use a high factor sun cream. Make sure you drink plenty of liquids (at least 3 to 5 litres a day, but not alcohol). In very hot conditions you may need to drink much more and a good tip is to start the day by drinking at least two litres!
Make sure you supplement your salt intake (for example by eating crisps and/or taking salt tablets). Wear light, airy, loose-fitting clothing (light cotton). Be careful if you undertake any hard physical exertion, particularly if your fluid/salt intake is low. Stay in the shade or, if possible, in an air-conditioned environment. All simple things but it is important to remember them. If you know elderly people in your area do keep an eye on them and make sure that they enjoy the summer without suffering! Finally: For elderly people who require help or advice Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva operate a telephone and email service called Adviceline. Gary Owen está buscando a su hijo Michael Owen, vecino desaparecido el pasado viernes 21 de junio en torno a las 10 de la mañana cuando se le perdía el rastro al residente en la localidad. El joven, de 32 años, que en ese momento vestía pantalón corto gris y camiseta de color blanca, fue visto por última vez solo, en el complejo Alboran Hills donde reside, en la zona de Martagina. En la vivienda se ha hallado su documentación, dinero y sus gafas de visión, por lo que no ve correctamente según su progenitor. Gary Owen, que pide la colaboración
ciudadana para encontrar a su hijo, ha recordado que Michael padece una enfermedad mental y aunque no es peligroso,puede encontrarse desorientado, por lo que es importante localizarle a la mayor brevedad. Search continues for Michael Owen, missing since 21 June Gary Owen is desperately looking for his son Michael who has been missing since Friday 21st of June. He was last seen at Urbanisation Alboran Hills, Manilva, at 10 in the morning since when there has been no information of his whereabouts. His wallet, cash, passport, credit cards and phone are all still in his apartment and his family are becoming increasingly worried about him Michael has recently suffered from mental issues for which he was being successfully
treated, in fact he had just been taken off medication but his family are afraid he may have had a relapse. Michael is not violent or dangerous but may be disorientated, and unaware of his surroundings. Michael also has impaired vision and does not have his glasses with him. Una ola de solidaridad por Sarah Sarah Almagro Vallejo Sarah, deportista innata que, a lo largo de su infancia y adolescencia, ha jugado al futbol, tenis, baloncesto, ha competido en natación, ha practicado judo, esquí nórdico, senderismo y actualmente hace crossfit y surf. Sus planes de futuro académicos son ir a la universidad para estudiar Derecho y preparar oposiciones a Inspección de Hacienda del Estado. De hecho, ya está matriculada y su intención es aprobar 4 asignaturas en el curso 2018-2019. También está planteando la posibilidad de cambiar a Economía el año que viene, porque le gusta más. Sea la que sea, ella, quiere estudiar una carrera. Su idea inicial fue inscribirse en algún deporte y representar a la universidad en competiciones. Sarah es una persona muy responsable para su edad, con una madurez precoz y un sentimiento profundo que le hace ser muy querida por sus amigos y por las personas que la conocen. Siempre está dispuesta para ayudar a los demás. Gracias a su gran afán por el deporte, ni fuma, ni consume drogas. Su bebida favorita es el tinto de verano con Fanta de limón. Es una joven que le encantan reunirse con sus amigos, pasear, hablar y bailar. El 23 de julio 2018, Sarah pilló un meningococo Y, pero no se sabe

copas, cubiertos, etc… con la persona afectada. Una persona puede ser portadora sana de la meningocócia. Esta infección le causó a Sarah una septicemia y colapso multiorgánico. Estuvo en estado crítico vital durante 5 días y en coma durante 10 días, hasta que ella mismo se arrancó los tubos de sedación. En las primeras 72 horas, tuvieron que usar unos medicamentos que le salvaron la vida, pero el proceso le causo unos daños en su sistema vascular muy graves, donde el riego sanguíneo de sus extremidades más distales era limitado. Al mes, los médicos tuvieron finalmente que eliminar estas partes necrosadas, lo cual le llevo a perder sus manos y sus pies en el proceso. También tiene daños importantes en sus riñones, pero tenemos la esperanza que, con el tiempo, recuperen todas sus funciones. Actualmente va a diálisis. Nuestra intención es pedir ayuda para crear un fondo para que Sarah pueda cubrir los gastos de prótesis que le permita continuar su vida con una normalidad y hacer deporte, teniendo en cuenta que las prótesis tienen una durabilidad de aproximadamente 3 – 6 años. Sarah desea volver a una normalidad lo antes posible. Ella sueña con ir a la Universidad, vivir en una residencia de estudiantes y participar en el deporte de competición. La vida de Sarah ahora mismo está en pausa hasta que consigamos entre todos volver a ponerla en pie.

Wave of support for local teenager who has suffered a life changing illness Sarah Almagro Vallejo, is a natural sports person who has been practising differents sports since she was a child. She has played football, basketball and tennis. She has competed in swimming meets, practised judo, nordic-skiing, does hikes and is currently hooked up on cross fit and surfing. Her future academic plans are to go to University and study Law and then prepare herself for public tax inspection examinations. She has already enrolled in Law School and her intentions are to do four subjects in this school year 2018-2019. She is still thinking about studying Economy instead of Law next year. Whatever she ends up studying, it will be for a career. One of her ideas was to sign up in some sport and represent the University in competitions. Sarah is a very responsible person for her age, with a maturity and profound sentiments which makes her loved by her friends and persons that get to know her. She is always available to help others. Because of her love for sports, she does not smoke, nor takes drugs. Her favourite drink is red wine with lemon Fanta. She loves meeting up, taking walks and dancing with her friends. On the 23rd of July, 2018, Sarah picked up a meningococcus Y, no one knows where or how. The meningococcus is transmitted from person to person by the respiratory system and throat.
The contagion can be through a kiss, a sneeze, a cough, sharing glasses, cutlery etc… with the person who has the infection. The infected person can be a healthy carrier. This infection caused her a sepsis and a multi-organic collapse. She went into shock. She was on a vital critical list for 5 days and in coma for 10 days, until she pulled out the sedation tubes. During the first 72 hours, she was given some medications which saved her life, but in the process serious damage to her vascular system was produced. A month later the doctors had to operate in order to eliminate parts of her body that had necrosis and in the process she lost both her hands and feet. She also has serious damages to her kidneys, but we hope that in time they will recuperate their functions. She is currently going to dialysis. Ours intentions is to ask for help to raise funds for Sarah to cover the costs of prosthesis that will permit her to live her life with a normality, taking into account that the prosthesis only last between 3-6 years. Sarah wishes to go back to living a normal life as soon as possible. She dreams about going to University, living in a student residence and participating in sports competitions. Tiendas benéficas Saint George La organización benéfica St George cuenta con tres tiendas benéficas, dos en Sabinillas, Manilva y otra en La Cancelada, Estepona. En Sabinillas, una de las tiendas vende ropa, zapatos, sombreros y accesorios de segunda mano, mientras que la otra vende una amplia gama de muebles usados, objetos decorativos, artículos para el hogar, libros, CDs, DVDs, etc. En la tienda de Cancelada se pueden encontrar todos los mismos tipos de artículos que en las dos anteriores además de muebles más grandes como sofás y camas. Gracias a las generosas donaciones recibidas, hay nuevos artículos en todas las tiendas a diario. ¡Pásate por las tiendas regularmente para no perderte ninguna ganga! Además de contar con algunos artículos geniales, las tiendas benéficas de St George también ofrecen la opción de alquilar algunos de sus ofrendas como sillas de ruedas, muletas, cunas de viaje, etc. La organización de la tienda siempre agradece las donaciones

BuddyUp (Manilva) Community Support Group In response to a tragic situation earlier in the year a number of local residents came together to form the BuddyUp (Manilva) Community Support Group, a ‘befriending’ group to provide support, comfort and a point of contact for people facing a variety of challenges. The BuddyUp group is coordinated by Marguerite Wilkins, and already has a number of members signed up. Working closely with other local charities and organisations, including the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George, Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva, Citizens’ Advice, Cudeca, Social Services, etc., the group aims to provide support and advice for the elderly, disabled, those who have recently lost a partner, single parents, divorcees, the socially excluded, people that are new to the area, in fact anyone who might need someone to talk to or just pointing in the right direction.
BuddyUp volunteers work in pairs and have access to a wide range of resources to call upon depending on the needs of those they are assisting. Saint George Charity Shops The St George Charity operates three charity shops, two in Sabinillas, Manilva and one in La Cancelada, Estepona. In Sabinillas one of the shops sells quality second hand clothing, shoes, hats and accessories; whilst the other sells a wide range of secondhand furniture, decorative items, household goods, books, cds,
dvds, etc. Our shop in La Cancelada sells the same full range of secondhand items as our Sabinillas shops and also stocks larger items of furniture and beds. Thanks to our generous donors there are new items in the shops daily, so visit regularly so as not to miss out on that fabulous bargain.
As well as stocking some great quality items the St George Charity shops also rent out various items such as wheelchairs, walking aids, travel cots, etc. The shop management welcome donations of quality secondhand items, and can arrange collection if needed. We are also looking for secondhand books, especially in languages other than English, to populate are extensive bookshelves. Food Bank The Saint George Charity runs a food bank initiative to help local people who are finding it difficult to make ends meet, and invites people to donate non-perishable goods, such as long life milk, pasta, rice, biscuits, tinned meat and fish, tinned vegetables, etc., along with toiletries, personal hygiene and cleaning items.
The charity will supplement these items with fresh produce, and will distribute on a weekly basis to a number of individuals and families that have been identified as being in urgent need of this service. Items can be donated at the St George Charity Shop in Calle Aurora Albornoz, Sabinillas, from 10 am to 1.30 pm Monday to Saturday.

Hop To It: By Michael McCarthy Hop To It is a perfect book to share with your young child. Woodstock and Churchill, two loveable dogs, rescue an injured baby rabbit called Alfie. This latest venture into board books for younger children follows his achievement of publishing a series of picture books for slightly older children, describing the adventures of the same two mischievous dogs. Meet The Author Michael McCarthy was born 1976 in Liverpool, is registered blind, hemiplegic and has learning difficulties. Aged 8 he had a near fatal accident which left him physically and mentally challenged. After spending many months in a coma/semi-coma state, he endured hours of painful physiotherapy which eventually led to him being able to walk again. Michael is a very purposeful character and has overcome great adversity. His sheer determination has led him to achieve completing the London Marathon, climbing mountains, competing in a London to Paris bike ride challenge, a swimming gold medal in the Special Olympics, Great North Run twice, visiting Kenya to help the Street Kids plus raising funds for charity. Michael asked, “How can I become famous like Roald Dahl?” “You need to write a book first,” was the reply. The ambition has now been realised, with great success, in this series of books describing the adventures of two mischievous dogs. Woodstock and Churchill’s personalities are based on two real dogs which have been in his life. Michael tells his stories to a friend Catherine Brown who transcribes for him. The team is complete with Rob Bennett creating magical and colourful illustrations that make the stories jump off the page.

El Corazón De Un Número Allí están: hojas de colores numeradas, figuras impresas: el eco cultural o una historia no incorpórea, manos y pies, y unos pechos de artista o unos valles de hierba. Allí están, recién salidos de la imprenta: “...como unos toros de Guisando de la literatura...”, así lo dice Francisco Umbral refiriéndose a las máquinas de imprenta. (Yo diría, en este caso, Guisando de los números). ...Pero ahora son esas hojas de colores numeradas, hojas en verdad de un árbol pretencioso, de recursos, de respuestas aún posibles, respuestas que salen del esbozo de una imprenta donde el metal se convierte por el celo del tacto en algo virgen y salvaje, ternura y fuego de latidos de máquinas que enumeran, que forman luego parte de ese papel, con el uno, el dos, el cinco, el ocho, y la unidad de millar es entonces una historia: De pronto, allí, se pasea un ciego, almirante de la luz, caprichoso y buscador de su boleto, un lustro sin hallarlo, enzarzado en sus besos un pleito de humanas contradicciones, de miopía de todos al no querer salir del crónico miedo por las limitaciones. Ha sentido en sus dedos la inocencia, el negror, el color del toro o su tinta. Y ahora, al fin, como un milagro, el aire le premia su costumbre de palparlo, de verse, de verlos, de vernos. Y el ciego dormita, rociando las sábanas unas palabras –ah, ese libro, ¿cómo se titula? Sí: “El poeta de los números”–. Está pensando en todos los que adquirieron un cupón. Unos lo pusieron sobre la guantera del coche; otros en la cartera; otros encima del televisor; otros, despistados, tardaron días en encontrarlo; y otros como autómatas, compraron el número de siempre, en la mañana distinta... Allí va, surgiendo de su cabello aplomo de luz: avance del alba hacia su puesto. Otra mañana más –este universo cierto del pie muestra el dogma de la acera– se pasea un viejo, madrugador (un jubilado de carácter inquieto), atrayendo a los pájaros del parque o a ese tiempo en su mano repleta de efigies; ah, y está también el que pasa corriendo, haciendo el ejercicio matutino –tan bueno para la circulación antes de ir a la oficina–; y están el de la frutería y el del pescado, y los camioneros, transportadores de muebles, periódicos, alimentos y energías diversas (necesidades que transitan). ...El que hoy va por allí, surgiendo de su cabello mesura de luz, avanza, vigila; ese que inspecciona, desea una ventana abierta en la calle para que unos ojos de viento ciudadano rebosen ilusión y comprendan la historia cotidiana de aquel que ha salido ganador del día. Lo Que Ha De Continuar El médico se lo dijo... Ella compraba queso fresco y pan integral. El régimen que hacía era ese, y solamente ese, dos comidas al día con queso fresco y pan integral. Sus ojos eran negros, del negro de la edad de los setenta que muchas veces parecen encontrar el color ajado, o mejor mate, de un mirar que ha gastado las pupilas. Su cabello, espeso y blanco como una montaña de nieve que se sujetara en la cabeza, moño de luna al amanecer, esperando que lo abatiera el sol de un nuevo verano. Sus manos tenían pocas arrugas comparadas con su rostro (en sus manos había un río lento sin quebrantos de piedras), y los pliegues de su cara, le daba, al igual que a otras mujeres septuagenaria, un aire de mujer solícita, sosegada. Pero sus manos eran de adolescente. En aquella época, yo era un muchacho cuando vi a esa mujer por primera vez. Estudiaba en el Instituto. Leía a Juan Ramón Jiménez (con jota) y a Luis Cernuda, y soñaba con las aventuras del escritor que me iba creciendo dentro como un bicho, así le decía yo a un amigo mío, que tenía en mi interior ‘un bicho’, y aunque esa palabra ahora no me agrada mucho, por lo de la alimaña, era lo que le decía. Tenía la impresión, era así, de que esa mujer guardaba todos los misterios, toda la ternura y toda la acción de una vida en plenitud para poder componer una gran novela. Ahora, al cabo de los años, y hoy, precisamente, encuentro un apunte que dice: “El médico le recetó queso fresco y pan integral”. Su hija, cansada de bregar, no comprende, que una mujer pueda vivir solo de pan integral y de queso fresco. “Sin duda, ese médico está mal de la cabeza”, decía. Y hoy se me antoja un relatar, que aquí encabezo, para que este libro, el cual no sé si algún día amasaré, deje ver otros apuntes del pasado, y por qué no, del futuro imperfecto, y me revele y libere de las pesadillas propias de un revolucionario que habita en el aire: ese mismo que ya conoceréis y que dejó una tarde de verano junto a mí, un latido, moviendo mi mano para que yo prosiguiera el relato de la vida de esa mujer (que según parece, y por partes, las grandes y geniales obras, solo así son posibles: primero la escalera y luego la azotea, donde una verbena espera para que goce el alma del buen arte). ...Que al igual que se es lanero en Sabadell, aceitunero en Jaén o minero en Asturias, esa mujer fue entera, atenta en los quehaceres del vivir, sencilla y alegre; y en su oficio de madre, esposa y luego viuda, exhalaba en su respirar recuerdos de todo lo hecho en su vida, y rechazaba, arrepintiéndose al instante, pues era por su bien, un gajo de uvas que su hija le ofrecía mientras comía, para que ese pan y ese queso se ablandaran al masticar.

Si sus planes de vacaciones este verano incluyen a sus animales entonces hay otras consideraciones a tener en cuenta y más para las caminatas en el campo o los paseos por la playa. Todo lo que brilla no es de oro, y con este calor hay que estar al tanto de las amenazas de los ectoparásitos - pulgas, garrapatas, mosquitos y moscas - como se ha mencionado en artículos anteriores. Los perros y los gatos no transpiran a través de su piel, como los seres humanos y los caballos. Cortando todo el pelo de nuestro perro en el verano porque está jadeando no necesariamente va hacerle más fresco. Ese abrigo de piel podría estar ayudando a protegerle contra insectos picadores y a su vez aislarle un poco del sol y las quemaduras. Un perro o gato jadea cuando hace calor como una forma de controlar la temperatura corporal, del mismo modo, no siempre significa que tienen sed. Hay muchos tipos de malas hierbas y semillas de plantas secas que se pegan al pelo y a la piel que pueden causar todo tipo de problemas entre los dedos de los pies, la nariz, en las orejas y oídos, o en el ojo. Si un chapuzón en el mar o la piscina es bueno para refrescar, es importante recordar que para nosotros enjuagarnos después del agua salada o del cloro con agua clara, será lógico que los animales reciban el mismo tratamiento. Esto puede ayudar a reducir los hot spots (puntos calientes) o eczemas de verano que son demasiado frecuentes. Demasiado uso de champú, incluso con el más suave de los champús medicados pueden causar problemas de la piel en lugar de resolverlos. Asegúrese de que en el calor tengan abundancia de agua disponible. Si el agua no es apta para que bebamos entonces deberíamos dar a nuestros animales de la misma agua embotellada que usamos. Deben estar en un lugar bien ventilado, y un lugar con sombra para poder refugiarse. Recuerde, si viaja con su perro y teiene que dejarlo en el coche por un corto
periodo de tiempo, piense dos veces. Incluso dejando las ventanas parcialmente abiertas no puede proporcionar suficientes propiedades de enfriamiento como se muestra en el triste caso de los dos perros de la policía en Inglaterra, que murieron hace poco aunque sólo se dejaba desatendido durante unos pocos minutos. Si está preocupado de que su perro está sufriendo un sobrecalentamiento, o sea un golpe de calor o se muestra signos de angustia, debemos tomar medidas inmediatas para ayudarlo. En primer lugar, enfrie sus pies mojonándolos o colocándolos en un recipiente con agua fría y así como una ligera ducha con agua fría, y en segundo lugar busque asesoramiento profesional por un golpe de calor que puede tener un desenlace fatal. Los Perros sudan o hacen la termorregulación (como ya decimos) a través de sus pies y jadeando, por lo que enfriando los pies es una de las maneras más rápida de aliviar su angustia del calor. También es importante tener en cuenta el calor irradiado de asfalto, cemento, caminos de tierra o arena de la playa. Si no puede caminar cómodamente descalzo sobre estas superficies es probablemente demasiado caliente para pasear a su mascota. También pueden salir ampollas o sufrir quemaduras en los pies/patas/ garras/pezuñas. Manteniendo estos consejos en mente debería proporcionar unas vacaciones más sanas y relajadas para todos. The Heat Is On
If your holiday plans include your animals this summer then there are other considerations to be aware of for those hikes in the countryside or jaunts on the beach. All that glitters is not gold and with this heat be aware of the threats from ectoparasites – fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and biting flies – as mentioned in previous articles. Dogs and cats do not perspire through their skin as humans and horses do, cutting all the fur down on our dog in the summertime because they are panting may not necessarily make them cooler. That fur coat could be helping to protect against biting insects and insulating somewhat against the sun and protecting against sunburn. A dog or cat pants when it is hot as a means of controlling body temperature, likewise it does not always mean that they are thirsty. There are many types of weeds and dry plant seeds that stick to fur and can cause all sorts of problems between the toes, up the nose, down the ear, or in the eye. If a dip in the sea or the pool is in order remember that we rinse the salt water or chlorine off afterwards, it follows then that our animals get the same treatment. This may help in reducing the all too frequent hot spots or summer eczemas. Over shampooing, even with the mildest of medicated shampoos may cause skin problems rather than resolving them. Make sure in the heat that they have abundant fresh water available and a shady spot to take refuge in. If the water isn’t fit for us to drink we ought to be giving our animals the same bottled water that we use. They should be in a well ventilated area. Remember, if travelling with your dog and having to leave him in the car for a short while, think twice. Even leaving the windows partially open may not provide sufficient cooling properties as shown in the sad case of the two police dogs in England that died, although they had only been left
unattended for just a few minutes. Should you be concerned that your dog or pet is overheating or showing signs of distress, immediate action must be taken to help them. Firstly, cool their feet by hosing him down or placing his feet in a bowl of cold water and secondly, seek professional advice because heat stroke can be fatal. As mentioned above dogs “sweat” or thermoregulate (as we say in the trade) through their feet and by panting and therefore cooling the feet is one of the fastest ways of alleviating their heat distress. It is also important to be aware of the heat irradiated from tarmac, cement, dirt tracks, or beach sand. If you cannot walk comfortably bare-footed over these surfaces it is probably too hot to walk your pet. They can also get burns or blisters on their feet/ paws/hooves. Keeping these few things in mind should make for a more relaxed vacation for all concerned. When in doubt consult a professional.

Fat at 40!
L
ife can be REALLY unfair, especially if you are a woman over 40 desperate to get rid of unwanted
fat. Not only does it pile up in all of the wrong places, like your belly, hips, thighs and butt, but it gets stuck, becoming almost impossible to get rid of. And no matter how little you eat or how much you exercise none of it seems to make an OUNCE of difference. Finally, thanks to recent discoveries, there is at last something you can do. But first, you need to understand what’s REALLY happening. When it comes to frustrating fat gain for females over 40 it’s all about estrogen dominance. Estrogen, along with its counter-balancing hormone progesterone, are the reproductive hormones that allow women to be fertile and bear children. Normally they’re balanced by your brain’s hormone control central, the hypothalamus. But the hypothalamus often gets confused... estrogen goes UP, progesterone goes DOWN, and you become estrogen dominant. When you’re estrogen dominant, it not only commands your body to deposit fat SPECIFICALLY on your thighs, hips and butt, it also orders your fat cells to grow AND multiply! Worse, because estrogen blocks your
thyroid while progesterone stimulates it, too much estrogen and not enough progesterone is like taking your foot off your metabolic gas pedal AND then slamming on the brakes at the same time! The primary cause of estrogen dominance is aging. As you age past 30, you ovulate fewer and fewer months of the year, until ovulation disappears completely by, on average, age 52. That’s important, because whenever a woman ovulates, progesterone surges, counter-acting the estrogen surge that

happens prior to ovulation, so fat-making and fat-burning stays in balance. But as you age and ovulation starts to decrease, you get fewer thyroid-stimulating progesterone surges, leaving relatively more thyroid-blocking estrogen doing its dirty work. The second cause of estrogen dominance is the 80,000+ chemicals released into the environment over the past few decades -- from pesticides, plastics, food additives, and chemicalfilled personal and household products. Once some of these franken-chemicals infiltrate your body, they can mimic the effects of thyroid-blocking estrogen, wreaking havoc on your fat-burning ability. This is NOT some scare tactic, scientists have documented that some male fish found in our lakes and rivers are actually CHANGING into females from all the excess fake estrogen they are absorbing!!! The third major cause of estrogen dominance and fat gain after 40 is something every woman today is familiar with -- excess stress. When stressed, your body secretes a powerful hormone, cortisol, to help you deal with the stressful situation. But if you are CONSTANTLY stressed, your body produces cortisol non-stop. And to get enough biological material to produce that cortisol, guess what? Your body must steal it from proges-
terone! So down go your progesterone levels. Since the downside to lower progesterone is lower thyroid function, which takes the gas off your metabolism, once again fat stores to store. Now for the good news: To get rid of that annoying padding piled onto your belly, hips, thighs and butt, there are 2 simple things you can do right now to counteract estrogen dominance: First, make as much of what you eat as clean and organic as possible. This minimizes your exposure to those fatloss-blocking fake estrogens found in all the chemicals conventional food is treated with. Second, remove as much stress as possible from your life. Draw firm boundaries and make time for yourself to relax and “un-busy” your schedule. This will keep your cortisol down and, therefore, your thyroid-stimulating progesterone up. This is includes exercise , strength training is a fantastic stress buster and at the same time is very metabolically active. Please know this: You are NOT doomed to forever gain weight as you age. Phil Nilsen-Nunn, new Director of Rugby at Club de Rugby del Estrecho On Thursday July 4 El Estrecho Rugby Club in Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro presented their new Director of Rugby, Phil NilsenNunn. The 6ft 1, former hooker with Yorkshire Carnegie RUFC, moved to Spain earlier this year with his wife, a doctor in Gibraltar, and although retired as a professional player was looking to find a local club to get involved with, and after talking with former colleagues from Wasps and Northampton, both of which have run football camps at Estrecho, he was recommended to approach the Club and after meetings with the Club’s President, David Arias and
other members of the club, was invited to come on board as Director of Rugby. During the press conference, which was chaired by the Club’s Vice-President, Arturo López, Phil spoke of how the Club, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this September, is an integral part of the local community, and reflects the international nature of the area. Phil will not only be involved in coaching, but also intends to play in the adult squad, stating that although his professional days are over, he loves the game and plans to keep on playing rugby as long as he can.

Carla Herrera medalla de plata en el Criterium Nacional de Esgrima El fin de semana pasado en el Polideportivo Europa de Leganés (Madrid) ha tenido lugar el Criterium Nacional de esgrima para menores de 10 y 12 años, equivalente al Campeonato de España de esta categoría. Un absoluto espectáculo ver en acción a más de 600 niños dando un ejemplo de deportividad y compañerismo. Todos los niños disfrutaron de una jornada de deporte y de conocer nuevos amigos de toda España con una afición común: la ESGRIMA. Siete tiradores del Club “AndaluZía” tomaron parte en esta competición demostrando un gran nivel deportivo, nobleza, respeto y juego limpio. En la categoría femenina de menores de 10 años Carla Herrera obtuvo el segundo puesto del campeonato en una gran actuación empatando su asalto y recibiendo un tocado en contra en los últimos segundos del minuto de desempate. De esta manera revalida su título del año pasado en una competición más dura que en años anteriores. En menores de 12 años Catherine Deardon, Luis Gutiérrez y Declan Wharton realizaron una gran competición demostrando nuevamente su elegancia y maestría, quedándose a las puertas de una merecida medalla por un solo tocado, clasificándose entre los doce mejores tiradores del torneo. categoría menores de 10 años con una gran actuación quedándose a unas pocas victorias de la lucha por las medallas. Agradecemos especialmente a las familias, padres y hermanos de los jóvenes tiradores por su dedicación y apoyo a los deportistas que miran con ilusión su futuro en esta disciplina. Carla Herrera takes the silver medal in the National Fencing Criterium Recently at the Europa Sports Centre in Leganés (Madrid), the National Fencing Criterium for under 10 and under 12 year olds was held, the equivalent to the Spanish Championship in these age groups. It was an absolute spectacle to see more than 600 children in action, giving a display of sportsmanship and companionship. All the children enjoyed a day of sport and met new friends from all over Spain with a common hobby: Fencing. Seven fencers from the Club "AndaluZía" took part in this competition demonstrating a great level of skill, sportsmanship, respect and fair play. In the female under 10 category, Carla Herrera took second place in the championship with a great performance by tying her assault
and receiving a head-first in the last seconds of the final minute of the tiebreak, revalidating her title last year in a tougher competition than in previous years. In the under 12s Catherine Deardon, Luis Gutiérrez and Declan Wharton had a great competition demonstrating again their elegance and mastery, and on the cusp of a well deserved medal, and ranking among the twelve best fencers of the tournament.
