Bienvenidos a la edición de marzo de The Resident. Mientras escribo este editorial, escucho a Theresa May y Jean-Claude Junker haciendo su último esfuerzo para salvar el acuerdo Brexit antes del significativo voto del martes. Como potencial votador a seguir en la unión, digo potencial, porque como muchos ciudadanos del Reino Unido en el extranjero se me negó una voz en el asunto, ya que he estado fuera del Reino Unido por más de 15 años, desearía que todo desapareciera y el Reino Unido se quedará en la UE. Sin embargo, soy realista y acepto que es poco probable, por lo que me gustaría que siguieran adelante para que podamos ver lo que vamos a obtener y descubrir cómo minimizar su impacto en nuestra vida cotidiana. Un mantra personal mío es no agonizar sobre cosas sobre las que no tengo control, simplemente esforzarme para sacar lo mejor de una situación, así que acabemos con esto y sigamos adelante, y esa, mis amigos, será mi última palabra sobre el Brexit. Ahora estamos entrando en primavera (¿tuvimos un invierno?) y el próximo mes es Pascua. Como parte de la carrera hacia la Pascua, muchas ciudades celebran el Carnaval, y este fin de semana le toca a Manilva disfrutar de este colorido comienzo de Cuaresma. El carnaval está marcado por procesiones y las actuaciones tradicionales de chirigotas, grupos de música satírica, algo así como un cruce entre barbershop y Monty Python, para quienes ningún político, famoso o figura de autoridad está a salvo de su ingenio cáustico. Otra celebración que tiene lugar este mes es el “Vive en Sus Calles” de Estepona, que celebra la transformación del centro histórico de la ciudad, con docenas de actividades y conciertos. As I sit here writing this editorial I am listening to Theresa May and Jean-Claude Junker making their last ditch effort to salvage the Brexit deal before the meaningful vote on Tuesday. As a potential remainer, I say potential remainer, as like many UK nationals overseas I was denied a say in the matter as I have been away from the UK for more than 15 years, I wish it would all just go away and the UK stay in the EU. However I’m a realist and accept that is unlikely, so I wish they would just get on with it so we can see what we’re going to get and work out how to minimise its impact on our day-to-day lives. A personal mantra of mine is not to agonise about things over which I have no control, merely to put my efforts into making the best of a situation, so let’s just get this over with and move on, and that folks will be my last word on Brexit. We are now entering Spring (did we have a Winter?) and next month is Easter. As part of the run up to Easter many towns celebrate Carnival, and this weekend its Manilva’s turn to enjoy this colourful start to Lent. Carnival is marked by processions and the traditional performances by chirigotas, satirical music groups, something like a cross between barbershop and Monty Python, to whom no politician, celebrity or figure of authority is safe from their caustic wit. Another celebration being held this month is Estepona’s ‘Vive en Sus Calles’ which celebrates the transformation of the historic town centre, with dozens of activities and concerts. Acosol invertirá un millón de euros para mejorar la depuraciónde aguas en Casares La empresa Pública de Aguas de la Mancomunidad de la Costa del Sol Occidental, Acosol, va a invertir un millón de euros para mejorar la depuración de aguas en Casares. El alcalde de Casares, Pepe Carrasco, y el teniente de alcalde, Juan Luis Villalón, se han reunido con el consejero delegado de la entidad, Manuel Cardeña, con el objetivo de analizar los detalles de este proyecto que da respuesta a una demanda histórica del equipo de gobierno del municipio. Según ha explicado el alcalde,

la idea con la que trabajan el Ayuntamiento y Acosol consiste en trasladar las aguas residuales de Casares hasta la depuradora del vecino municipio de Manilva, para lo que sería necesario construir nuevas tuberías que serán financiadas por la empresa. Este proyecto alberga además nuevas canalizaciones en la zona del Arroyo de la Albarrá, para conducir estas aguas residuales también hasta la depuradora de Manilva. El Ayuntamiento lleva varios años trabajando en la recogida de aguas de este paraje, donde

se producen importantes daños en la época de lluvias intensas. Aunque el proyecto aún debe ser presentado a la Junta de Andalucía, el objetivo del Ayuntamiento es que ambas obras queden finalizadas este mismo año. Durante el encuentro con los responsables de Acosol también abordaron otros asuntos como el suministro de agua en los diseminados del municipio y algunas mejoras en caminos públicos que dan acceso a los pozos de suministro.

Comienzan los trabajos para la construcción del edificio de usos múltiples de Casares Costa Casares han comenzado los primeros trabajos para la construcción del edificio de usos múltiples de Casares Costa, una edificación que va a dotar al núcleo costero de nuevos espacios públicos para una guardería y para las Escuelas Municipales de Baile y Teatro. Estos días se están realizando trabajos de desbroce de maleza para preparar la zona antes de que se inicien las tareas de construcción del edificio. Este edificio es una de las propuestas de gobierno de IU

para esta legislatura y atiende a una necesidad de los residentes de la zona de contar con espacios para actividades sociales, de ocio y culturales, que ahora se desarrollan en la Tenencia de Alcaldía. Las obras que tienen un plazo de ejecución de 10 meses y suponen una inversión de 350.000 euros. El nuevo edificio va a estar ubicado en una parcela municipal de Arroyo Parrilla, en el sector UR-2 de Casares Costa. Una situación privilegiada a la que se puede acceder peatonalmente des-

de la zona del cruce y desde Marina de Casares. La edificación va a contar con dos plantas de 250 metros cuadrados cada una, con entradas completamente independientes. La planta baja estará destinada a la instalación de un servicio de ludoteca-guardería, y la alta presentará un espacio diáfano para talleres y actividades, lo que permitirá instalar en este edificio las escuelas municipales de baile, de teatro y ofertar la Escuela de Música y otras actividades que demande la ciudadanía.

La concejalía de Cultura edita una guía de dibujantes locales La concejalía de Cultura está elaborando una guía de dibujantes locales. Se trata de un cuaderno de dibujo con toda la información sobre los artistas gráficos de Casares y sus trabajos. El proyecto está abierto a todos los pintores que quieran mostrar su obra. Una convocatoria abierta tanto a adultos como a niños. El objetivo es tener un documento gráfico que recoja los nombres de los artistas casareños con la idea de que esa guía perdure en el tiempo y que sirva para recopilar los nombres propios de los que se dedican a esta disciplina, tanto a nivel profesional como amateur. La información se ha canalizado a través de los talleres de pintura con los que se cuenta en el municipio, pero la iniciativa está abierta a cualquier dibujante local o

residente que quiera aparecer, con el objeto de que la guía sea lo más completa posible y poder presentarla dentro de la semana cultural de Casares que tendrá lugar del 22 al 28 del próximo mes de abril.

The Department of Culture is compiling a guide to local artists The Department of Culture is compiling a guide to local artists. It is an illustrated book with all the information about the artists of Casares and their works. The project is open to all painters who want to display their work, both adults and children. The objective is to have an illustrated guide listing the names of the artists from Casares

with the aim that this guide will serve as a record and be used to compile the names of those who dedicate themselves to their painting, both professionally and amateur. The information has been researched through local painting workshops that are available in the municipality, but the initiative is open to any local

artist or resident who wants to be listed, in order that the guide be as complete as possible and able present it within the Casares cultural week to be held from the 22nd to the 28th of April. Anyone interested in appearing in this catalogue should send their data and images of their work to turismo@casares.es before March 21st.

Work begins on the construction of the Casares Costa multi-purpose building

Works are under way on the construction of the multi-purpose building for Casares Costa, a building that will provide the coastal community with new public spaces for a daycare centre and for the Municipal Schools of Dance and Theatre. Brush clearing work has been carried out to prepare the area before the construction of the building begins. This building is one of the proposals by the IU government for this term and addresses a need for residents of the area to have spaces for social, leisure and cultural activities, which are currently being held in the Tenencia del Alcalde building in Marina de Casares. The works are scheduled to take 10

months and involve an investment of 350,000 euros. The new building will be located on a municipal plot at Arroyo Parrilla, in the UR-2 sector of Casares Costa. A privileged situation that can be accessed by foot from the area of the crossroads and from Marina de Casares. The building will have two floors of 250 square meters each, with completely independent entrances. The ground floor will be used for the installation of a playroomdaycare centre, and the upper floor will present a flexible space for workshops and activities, which will host the municipal schools of dance, theatre and provide the School of Music and other activities demanded by citizens.

El Ampa del colegio Blas Infante convoca su VII concurso de cuentos. El certamen, dirigido al alumnado de primaria y de la ESO, tiene como principal objetivo estimular la capacidad creativa de los

alumnos y cultivar sus destrezas de lectoescritura. El plazo para presentar los cuentos, que serán de temática libre, finaliza el 22 de marzo.

Baja el paro en Casares Febrero ha dejado tres desempleados menos en Casares, con lo que la cifra total se queda en 472 personas, de las que 303 son mujeres y 169 son hombres. Con respecto al mismo periodo del año anterior, el paro ha aumentado en 8 personas, pero no obstante la cifra sigue estando entre las más bajas de un mes de febrero de los últimos diez años. En el vecino municipio de Estepona febrero ha dejado 87 parados menos, con lo que la cifra total de desempleados se sitúa en 6.080 personas, lo que supone 261 más que en el mismo mes del año pasado. En la misma línea se sitúa Manilva, donde el paro ha bajado en este último mes en 14 personas, dejando el número de parados

en 1.276, lo que supone 22 menos que el año pasado. A nivel provincial,febrero ha dejado buenos datos en el mercado laboral con una ligera caída de 449 parados, algo que no suele ser habitual desde que comenzó la crisis al tratarse de un mes correspondiente todavía a la temporada baja turística. La cifra total de desempleados en la provincia se sitúa actualmente en 155.516 personas. En términos interanuales, la provincia de Málaga presenta una bajada de 4.296 parados respecto a febrero de 2018, con una caída porcentual del 2,69%. Los sindicatos denuncian que las cifras del paro siguen afectando en mayor medida a las mujeres.

El Ayuntamiento homenajea a la mujer en la nueva obra que se suma a la Ruta de Murales Artístico El Ayuntamiento de Estepona ha incorporado a la Ruta de Murales Artísticos una nueva obra que rinde homenaje a la mujer. La pintura, que es una creación

del artista José Fernández Ríos, representa una cariátide - figura femenina de la Grecia clásica esculpida con función de columna- que representa a la

mujer como pilar fundamental de la vida, sosteniendo con sus manos el mundo. La obra, que lleva por título ‘Atlantas’, el Consistorio tiene una superficie de 170 metros cuadrados y se ubica en la fachada del edificio El Pinar, entre las avenidas Andalucía y Los Reales, junto al Parque BotánicoOrquidario. Fernández Ríos vuelve a utilizar en este mural su estilo más

hiperrealista, que sobre todo destaca en el detalle de los ropajes que luce la protagonista de su nueva creación. Asimismo, otras de las características más destacable es la monumentalidad y la grandiosidad de la obra, que impresiona por sus dimensiones y su realismo. Esta creación será presentada el sábado, 9 de marzo, a las 19.00 horas, dentro de los actos que ha organizado el Ayuntamiento para

conmemorar el Día Internacional de la Mujer. Con ‘Atlantas’, la Ruta de Murales Artísticos de Estepona suma un total de 48 obras por todo el término municipal, que han hecho de la ciudad un museo al aire libre. Este proyecto municipal puesto en marcha en 2012 se ha convertido en todo un atractivo para los turistas y en un sello de identidad de la oferta cultural de municipio.

Estepona pays homage to women in the latest work to join the Route of Artistic Murals Estepona Town Council has unveiled a new work that pays tribute to women on the Route of Artistic Murals. total of 48 works throughout the municipality, which have made the town an open-air art gallery. This municipal project launched in 2012 has become an attraction for tourists and a marque of the municipality's cultural offerings.

‘Estepona Vive sus Calles’ celebrará su edición más extraordinaria con una treintena de actividades gratuitas El Ayuntamiento de Estepona ha presentado hoy la séptima edición de ‘Estepona vive sus calles’, un evento que ofrecerá una treintena de actividades culturales y de ocio gratuitas destinadas a públicos de todas las edades. El evento, que este año tendrá lugar del 29 al 31 de marzo, nació con el objetivo de dar a conocer la gran renovación que se ha producido en el casco antiguo de Estepona, según ha explicado el teniente alcalde del área Sociocultural y Servicios, Blas Ruzafa. Además, con esta propuesta se logra generar una importante actividad social, cultural, comercial y de ocio antes de Semana Santa, lo que repercutirá de forma positiva en los negocios y establecimientos dedicados al ocio y la restauración. En cuanto al programa que se ha confeccionado, el edil ha calificado esta edición como la “más extraordinaria” de todas las celebradas hasta el momento debido al aumento en el número actividades, a lo novedoso de algunas propuestas y a la diversidad de eventos. Entre las novedades, Ruzafa ha indicado que este año los vecinos tendrán la oportunidad de ascender en tres globos aeroestáticos que se ubicarán en la playa de La Rada. Esta actividad tendrá lugar el domingo, 31 de marzo, desde las 10.00 hasta las 12.00 horas. Los interesados en subir a algunos de estos dirigibles podrán conseguir su entrada escaneando el código QR que se encuentra en los folletos que está distribuyendo el Ayuntamiento con el programa completo de ‘Estepona vive sus calles’. Otra de las propuestas más originales de esta edición será la proyección, por primera vez en Estepona, de un vídeo mapping que recreará el fantástico cuento de Peter Pan. Esta técnica artística consiste en desplegar sobre fachadas imágenes en movimiento con música y sonido De esta manera, los espectadores podrán disfrutar de un espectáculo de animación tridimensional que los atrapará. El vídeo mapping se podrá ver en la plaza del Reloj el

sábado 30 y el domingo 31 a las 20.00, 20.30, 21.00 y 21.30 horas. La duración de cada pase será de 15 minutos. Otra de las actuaciones que más interés despertará será el concierto que ofrecerá el grupo ‘Siempre Así’ en la plaza ‘Diario ABC’, a las 22.00 horas del sábado 30. El grupo, que ha vendido más de un millón de discos en España y Latinoamérica, interpretará éxitos tan populares como ‘Siempre Así’, ‘Si los hombres han llegado hasta la luna’ o la versión aflamencada que hicieron de la mítica canción ‘My way’ de Frank Sinatra. Por otro lado, los jardines Carmen Thyssen del Parque BotánicoOrquidario acogerán el domingo, a las 12.30 horas, el espectáculo de circo ‘Kristall Zirkus Show’, donde podremos disfrutar de equilibrios, acrobacias verticales y malabares. Además, como ya es tradición, durante estos tres días los vecinos y visitantes podrán degustar los distintos platos que elaboran los numerosos restaurantes y bares de la localidad que participan en la X Ruta de la Tapa. Las actividades gastronómicas continuarán con el IX Concurso Nacional de Cortadores de Jamón ‘Trofeo Popi’ que se celebrará el domingo de 12.00 a 14.00 horas en la calle Real. El responsable municipal ha señalado que otra de las novedades tendrá lugar el viernes en la calle Villa. Los seguidores del mítico grupo ABBA podrán disfrutar de las versiones que

hará la banda ‘Voulez Vous-The Ultimate ABBA Show’. La pareja mejor caracterizada de ABBA que asista al evento recibirá un premio. Por otro lado, los más jóvenes tendrán una original gimkana organizada por la emisora de radio ‘Los 40 Principales’. Se celebrará el sábado 30, a las 17.00 horas, en la plaza Antonia Guerrero. Asimismo, del viernes al domingo tendremos el VI Salón Expotatoo en el Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos. Además, el sábado, la plaza Antonia Guerrero acogerá,a partir de las 10.00 horas, el II Abierto Nacional de Ajedrez en el que podrán participan personas de todas las edades. Ese mismo día, desde las 12.00 hasta las 18.00 horas, la plaza Augusto Suárez de Figueroa acogerá una gran fiesta infantil que contará con castillos hinchables, talleres, animación, y un divertido photocall. 'Estepona Vive sus Calles' will celebrate its best edition yet with around thirty free activities Estepona presentS the seventh edition of 'Estepona lives its streets', an event that will offer thirty free cultural and leisure activities aimed at people of all ages. The event, which this year will take place from March 29 to 31, was established with the aim of publicizing the great renovation that has taken place in the old town of Estepona, as explained by the councillor of the Sociocultural and Services department, Blas Ruzafa. In addition the event will generate an important social, cultural, commercial and leisure activity before Holy Week, which will have a positive impact on businesses and establishments dedicated to leisure and catering. Subida Peñas Blancas Estepona Estepona será de nuevo este fin de semana la capital del automovilismo. El puerto de Peñas Blancas acogerá los campeonatos de España y Andalucía de Montaña, así que la emoción está garantizada. Viernes:

El corte de la Avenida de España para la entrada de los vehículos de competición y organizar la zona de trabajo del campeonato se realizará a las 14.30 horas. Verificaciones técnicas a partir de las 15.30 horas. Una vez

verificados, los vehículos irán a parque cerrado, ubicado en el paseo marítimo.

Sábado:

A partir de las 10:00 hasta las 18.30 horas se realizarán los entrenos y la primera manga de carrera. La presentación oficial de los vehículos será el sábado a partir de las 20 horas en la calle Real con Calle Terraza.

Domingo:

A partir de las 7:30 horas hasta las 15:00 horas se realizarán los entrenos, la segunda y tercera manga de carreras y la entrega de trofeos.

Estepona Peñas Blancas Hill Climb Estepona will be the motor racing capital again this weekend, when the Peñas Blancas mountain is the venue for the Andalucia Hill Climb and Spanish Championships guaranteeing some thrilling motor sport. Programme Friday: The town’s Avenida de España will become the competition’s operations base with workshops and and registration point from 2.30 pm. From 3.30 pm all entrant’s vehicles are subject to the technical verification process after which they proceed to the parc ferme on the seafront where visitors can get a good look at the cars.

Saturday: From 10 am to 6.30 pm there are practice sessions and the first race will be run. The starting point is in Avenida de los Reales, heads up the mountain, and finishes some 7.5 kms away at the Peñas Blancas pass. The official presentation and display of the vehicles will be on Saturday at 8 pm on Calle Real and Calle Terraza.

El Ayuntamiento selecciona los tres proyectos del concurso de ideas para la piscina cubierta de San Fernando El Ayuntamiento de Estepona ha seleccionado a los tres proyectos finalistas del concurso de ideas convocado para la redacción del proyecto de obra de una piscina cubierta. Este futuro equipamiento, que está previsto en un área de actuación de 3.000 metros cuadrados en el entorno del polideportivo San Fernando, se suma al gran área de equipamientos de ocio y deportivos que se ha creado en esta zona norte de la ciudad, que cuenta con el campo de fútbol San Fernando, el campo de fútbol Muñoz Pérez, el Estadio de Atletismo, el Parque Ferial y Deportivo, el Auditorio Felipe VI y el circuito pumptrack y de BMX. El primer premio, dotado con una cuantía de 15.000 euros, ha sido para la propuesta ‘Agua en movimiento’ del arquitecto Eduardo Guerrero-Strachan Kerr. Los técnicos municipales que han formado parte del jurado han valorado que este proyecto plantea “un edificio rotundo, sencillo y elegante, con una fachada rítmica y bien acabada”. Esta propuesta pone en valor el entorno urbano de la zona deportiva existente, otorgando una nueva imagen al complejo existente al plantear unos pórticos verticales y horizontales con perfiles de aluminio que generarían el denominado ‘Agua en movimiento’. Este proyecto también ha destacado por su sostenibilidad energética y

medioambiental, ya que su diseño favorecería el uso de la iluminación natural, al tiempo que priorizaría los recursos solares como principal fuente de alimentación energética del inmueble. La segunda idea seleccionada por los técnicos y premiada con 10.000 euros ha sido ‘Nueva ventana al deporte’ del estudio ‘Muka Arquitectura S.L.P’. En este caso, se ha valorado la propuesta de una edificación “muy pura y minimalista” que presenta un volumen atractivo que se implanta en la parcela con rotundidad e inteligencia, aprovechando el soleamiento y ventilaciones cruzadas. El diseño del edificio destaca por un espacio de recreo generado en el interior de la manzana a modo de plaza pública o vestíbulo urbano con integración visual hacia el campo de fútbol. En cuanto al tercer finalista, que recibirá un premio de 5.000 euros, el jurado ha seleccionado ‘Waterpona’ de la arquitecta

Marta Ortíz Díez de los Ríos. Los técnicos consideran que el edificio planteado quedaría “muy bien integrado en el conjunto deportivo”, que actualmente se encuentra disgregado por muros que serían eliminados. De esta manera, se facilitarían las comunicaciones entre la piscina y los actuales espacios. En cuanto al diseño, destacan sus formas sinuosas y movidas que evocan al medio acuático, alternando huecos muy livianos de vidrio transparente estratégicamente situados para facilitar la comunicación con los espacios exteriores. El municipio dispone en la actualidad de tres piscinas municipales -Santo Tomás de Aquino, Cancelada y centro deportivo José Ramón de la Morena- para los usuarios y para clubes, que disponen de horarios de uso gratuito de estas instalaciones en virtud del acuerdo de cesión gratuita realizado por el Ayuntamiento de Estepona.

The design of the building stands out for a recreational space generated inside the block as a public square or urban hall with visual

integration to the football field. As for the third finalist, who will receive a prize of 5,000 euros, the jury has selected 'Waterpona' by the architect Marta Ortíz Díez de los Ríos. The technicians consider that the proposed building would be "very well integrated into the sports complex", which is currently broken up by walls that would be eliminated. In this way, communications between the pool and the current spaces would be facilitated. As for the design, its sinuous and lively shapes evoke the aquatic environment, alternating very light holes of transparent glass strategically placed to facilitate communication with exterior spaces. El edil ha mostrado su satisfacción por la puesta en marcha de este nuevo proyecto, que ampliará la oferta de ocio y deporte en la localidad. Además ha querido agradecer al grupo de personas que lideran esta iniciativa su aportación al fomento de estas disciplinas deportivas. Por su parte, Ángel Porras, ha informado que las primeras acciones que se llevarán a cabo, serán la celebración de I Open de Bodyboard, que tendrá lugar en la playa del Ángel. Constará de dos modalidades OPEN, la Prone que contará con 32 plazas y Dropknee con 16 plazas, el plazo

de inscripción está abierto desde ayer lunes, 4 de marzo. Además, llevarán a cabo acciones de lucha contra la contaminación, a través de la iniciativa ‘El plástico en nuestro medio marino’; un ambicioso proyecto que engloba jornadas de limpieza en la playa, talleres de reciclaje con niños y jóvenes, puntos de información a turistas para el correcto uso de los sistemas de recogida de basura, entre otras. El presidente del Estepona Surfing Club también ha anunciado que se encuentran desarrollando una escuela de surf, bodyboard y paddle surf, que muy pronto estará en funcionamiento dirigida a niños y jóvenes, con el objetivo de ocupar su tiempo libre a la vez que les ayudará a desarrollar valores, a mejorar su actitud ante la vida y a tomar conciencia del cuidado y el respeto a la naturaleza.

Estepona council has declared that this is "excellent news" for the town because, for the first time, Spain will host a meeting of this organization that has such prestigious members in the world of botany as the UK’s Royal Horticultural Society. Siempre Así en concierto El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa que el grupo de rumbas y sevillanas ‘Siempre Así’ ofrecerá un concierto gratuito el sábado, 30 de marzo de 2019, en la plaza ABC. Los próximos días 16 y 17 de Marzo, el núcleo de Sabinillas acogerá la XIX edición del Carnaval. Esta fiesta se celebrará en base al siguiente programa de actividades; Este año la Delegación de Cultura, que dirige Eva Galindo ha introducido novedades como el I Carnaval de mascotas o la fiesta para adolescentes con su correspondiente concurso de disfraces. Los adolescentes este año tendrán cabida en la celebración del carnaval con una fiesta temática basada en el mundo del Lejano Oeste, que se celebrará en el colegio de Sabinillas. En el mismo recinto tendrá lugar el concurso de disfraces para ellos, del que más adelante se informará de los horarios.

Manilva’s 19th annual Carnival will be held in Sabinillas on 16th and 17th of March. This year’s celebrations, organised by the Culture Department, directed by Councillor Eva Galindo, include a packed programme of activities and entertainment, including new features such as a Pets’ Carnival and a themed party for teenagers. The teenage party will be held at the school in Sabinillas and has a Wild West theme including a fancy dress party. Campaña "Compra en tu Tienda de Siempre" Desde Alcaldía, Comercio y Medio Ambiente se ha puesto en marcha una iniciativa para apoyar a los establecimientos locales con el objetivo de que la ciudadanía no utilice tantas bolsas y preservar el medio. Con el reparto de más de 6.000 bolsas especiales, los vecinos y vecinas de nuestra localidad podrán realizar sus compras sin necesidad de utilizar otro material que tantísimo daño está haciendo

With the distribution of more than 6,000 special reusable bags, the residents of Manilva can make their purchases without using materials that cause so much damage to nature and the environment. Registros de desempleo más bajos desde hace diez años El concejal de Fomento de Empleo, Marcos Ruiz, ha hecho un balance sobre los resultados de desempleo registrados en el municipio desde el año 2009 al 2019. En dos años en el que he tenido el privilegio y el orgullo de representar a los habitantes de mi pueblo, lo que he tratado es de trabajar sin descanso, dedicar todo mi tiempo y esfuerzo a resolver los problemas de los manilveños y mejorar su calidad de vida. ¿Qué destacaría de sus logros? En muy poco tiempo hemos mejorado considerablemente las infraestructuras con la remodelación de calles como Cuartel, Iglesia, Duquesa de Arcos etc. Hemos abierto y puesto en funcionamiento el complejo deportivo de Sabinillas y su piscina climatizada, asfaltado de los caminos de los campos, la creación de un inmenso depósito de agua que garantizará el suministro durante más de diez años y un largo etcétera. ¿Y a nivel económico, qué nos puede decir? Contamos con un Ayuntamiento muy saneado, que cumple con sus obligaciones tributarias y que estamos al corriente de todo. Pero no es sólo eso, lo que le interesa también a los ciudadanos es la bajada del IBI durante tres años consecutivos lo que repercute positivamente en la economía de sus hogares. ¿Cuál es la tasa de desempleo del municipio? Los datos nos sitúan como el pueblo de la provincia con menos paro, pero continuaremos trabajando para que no haya una sola persona desempleada. El turismo, ¿qué nos puede decir de Manilva y sus servicios? Somos un pueblo eminentemente turístico cuya economía depende mucho del sector servicio, de ahí

que cuidemos y apoyemos a los empresarios locales. Nuestro Puerto de la Duquesa, Paseo marítimo, urbanizaciones y rincones de los tres núcleos urbanos tienen el suficiente atractivo para destacar como destino turístico de la Costa del Sol. Queremos que Manilva tenga opciones turísticas durante los 365 días al año. Además de nuestras magníficas playas, tenemos productos muy interesantes como la uva, el vino y la pasa, por lo que el sector vitivinícola es fundamental. También contamos con infinidad de posibilidades deportivas, de ocio, con ferias y fiestas de interés turístico y cultural, incluyendo los yacimientos que destacan como uno de los más importantes del mundo. ¿En materia de seguridad y salud? Desde la Subdelegación del Gobierno se nos ha transmitido los datos en el que se refleja que Manilva es un pueblo seguro y tranquilo, bajando incluso los pequeños conflictos a los que se enfrenta nuestra policía local, resolviendolos sin mayores problemas. La salud, seguimos haciendo esfuerzos para mejorarla e instando a la Junta de Andalucía a que, como es su deber, mejore aún más los servicios que se prestan. - ¿Y el futuro de Manilva? Mi compromiso es seguir apostando por una Manilva de futuro, con un desarrollo sostenible,que mantenga la esencia de pueblo y continuar mejorando las infraestructuras y los servicios. Tenemos proyectos muy interesantes como la senda que conectará el núcleo de Manilva y Sabinillas, ampliar la oferta turística, ampliar las zonas verdes, seguir contribuyendo a mejorar el medio ambiente y todo ello haciendo partícipe a nuestros ciudadanos, ya que entre todos haremos un municipio mejor.

Interview with Mario Jiménez, Mayor of Manilva It is just a few months before the local elections, what are your feelings? We have worked very hard and I am confident that the residents of our municipality trust in our achievements up to now and commitment to the future and continue to give Compromiso Manilva their support when the time comes. How would you sum up your government’s performance? In the two years in which I have had the privilege and pride to represent the inhabitants of my town, I have worked tirelessly, and dedicated all my time and efforts to solve the people’s problems and improve their quality of life. Which of your achievements would you highlight? In a very short time, we have considerably improved the infrastructure with the remodeling of streets such as Calles Cuartel, Iglesia, Duquesa de Arcos, etc. We have opened and put into operation the Sabinillas Sports Centre and its indoor heated swimming pool, tarmacked many of the rural roads, the creation of an immense water reservoir that will guarantee the supply for more than ten years. What are your comments on the state of the local economy? The Town Council’s financial situation is a healthy one, complying with its tax obligations and we are aware of everything. But it is not only that, what is also of interest to local residents is the reduction in IBI over the last three consecutive years, which has a positive effect on household economies. What is the unemployment rate of the municipality? The data states that Manilva is the municipality in the province with least unemployment, but we will continue working towards a situation in which there is not a single unemployed person.

What is the importance of the foreign population for the Town Council? Fundamental. They are part of our society and they are just as important as those who were born here. They are our friends, neighbours, companions and fellow citizens. They have the delegation of Foreign Residents, from which are provided events, activities, trips, assistance and everything they need and all the other departments that make up the Town, which are available when needed. What is your opinion of the Brexit?

Tourism, what can you tell us about Manilva and its services? We are predominantly a tourist town whose economy depends a lot on the service sector, hence we take care of and support the local businessmen. Our Puerto de la Duquesa, promenade, urbanizations and beauty spots within the three urban centres have enough attractions to stand out as a tourist destination on the Costa

I respect the decisions of each individual and therefore, we must respect the majority decision of the people of the United Kingdom. As for us and our British neighbors, they will continue to be welcomed and received. No me gusta como se está gestionando, así que ya no pago más cuotas!

omo hemos explicado en el pasado, la mayoría de las Comunidades solo tienen una fuente de ingresos, las cuotas que pagan los propietarios. Algunas Comunidades puede tener otros ingresos, como el alquiler de zonas o instalaciones comunes, pero son pocas. Cuando un propietario no está contento con las decisiones tomadas en la junta o con la forma en que el Presidente y el Comité están gestionando la Comunidad, reaccionan dejando de pagar las cuotas, para intentar dañar a la comunidad y obligarles a reaccionar, pero esta reacción raramente ocurre, por cómo funciona el sistema legal español. Según nuestro sistema legal actual, la única forma de no perder los derechos dentro de una comunidad es que estéis al día con el pago de todas vuestras cuotas, si sois deudores perdéis la mayoría de vuestros derechos, podéis gritar todo lo alto que queráis, pero no os va a escuchar nadie, ya que no estáis cumpliendo vuestras obligaciones. El hecho de no pagar las cuotas no es la solución, solo empeorará la situación y os complicará las cosas a título personal. Entonces, si no estoy contento, ¿qué hago? La ley española es muy clara, y como propietarios tenéis dos opciones para afrontar la situación, la primera es nombrar un abogado, a título personal, y tomar acciones legales, y la segunda es buscar el apoyo de los vecinos y presentarse como Presidente en la próxima Junta General, y entonces usted sería el ciudadano ejemplar que de-

berá hacer cumplir la ley en la comunidad. Algunas comunidades tienen enormes problemas económicos causados por los propietarios morosos, los promotores que aún poseen propiedades y están en liquidación, o los bancos que no han registrado su titularidad, por lo que no hay nadie a quien reclamar a menos que se pueda conseguir una prueba de su titularidad. Cuando esto sucede, siempre hay un grupo de propietarios que dicen ‘si no están pagando por qué voy a pagar yo’, ‘yo no tengo porque pagar lo de los morosos’ o ‘cuando llegue el juicio en 5 años ya veremos’. Estos propietarios no están exactamente equivocados en su forma de ver, pero solo están empeorando la situación y poniendo en peligro el valor de su inversión y de su vivienda. Hay acciones que puede tomar, para al menos aliviar el dolor de una lista de morosos que no para de crecer: En primer lugar, la Comunidad puede aprobar e incluir en los Estatutos una Prohibición para los deudores del uso de la piscina e instalaciones comunitarias no esenciales (pistas de paddle, wifi comunitaria, etc). No se puede evitar que los deudores accedan al garaje, el ascensor o cortar su agua ni luz, ya que esto es ilegal; pero se puede limitar el acceso a servicios no esenciales. Esta limitación debe ser aprobada por unanimidad en una Junta, firmada por el Presidente en la Notaría e inscrita en el Registro de la Propiedad, de modo que sea legalmente vinculante para todos los propietarios actuales y futuros,

sus inquilinos y sus invitados. Si no se registra, solo será vinculante para aquellos propietarios que se pueda demostrar que lo sabían (aquellos que votaron directamente en la reunión). La segunda acción que recomendamos implementar es un descuento por pronto pago en las cuotas. Muchas comunidades tienen una penalización por demora, sin embargo, cuando nos vemos en el Juzgado nos encontramos con que, aunque ganemos el juicio por la reclamación de cuotas, no se incluya esa penalización ni los costes judiciales, si el propietario afirma que no sabía que había una penalización. Un descuento por pronto pago es básicamente una penalización invertida, por lo que aumenta el presupuesto. Los propietarios que

pagan a tiempo obtienen el descuento (usted paga igual que antes) y los propietarios, que no pagan o pagan tarde, no lo reciben, por lo que tienen que pagar más. Recomendamos un 20% de descuento, por lo que si un banco se hace cargo de una propiedad, la comunidad recuperará las cuotas correspondientes al año en curso y los 3 años anteriores, y también el ‘descuento’ correspondiente a todas esas cuotas ya que no se les aplica, por lo que se recuperaría 3/4 de un año más que si no tuvieses el descuento aprobado. Estas acciones no ayudan a corto plazo, pero al menos significa que se están tomando medida a largo plazo y con estas medidas se alentará a otros propietarios a pagar. En cuanto a las propiedades tu-

rísticas, las Legislación actual es, cuan menos, inconsistente. En Diciembre, se aprobó una modificación para que las Comunidades puedan incrementarles en un 20% las cuotas a las viviendas de uso turístico, pero esto se derogó en Enero, por lo que no pudimos ponerlo en práctica. Estos cambios en la ley son frecuentes, por eso es tan necesario que vuestra Comunidad tenga un Administrador de Fincas Colegiado. I’m not happy with how it’s being run, so I’m not going to pay my Community fees!

s we have explained in the past, most Communities only have one source of income, the fees that owners pay. A very small group of Communities may have other income, such as rental income from Communal areas or installations, but that is a minority. When an owner is not happy with decisions made at an AGM/EGM or with how the President and committee are managing issues, they tend to fire back by not paying their community fees, trying to hurt the community and forcing a reaction, but this reaction will rarely occur due to how the Spanish legal system is set up. According to our current legal system, if you have an issue, the only way to have a right to fight for it is if you pay all your fees, if you are in arrears, you lose most of your rights as an owner, so you can shout as loud as you want, but no one will listen, as you are not contributing to the maintenance of the urbanization. So, if you stop paying because you don’t agree with the works that are being carried out, or how your money is being spent, then

withholding your fees is not the solution, it will only make matters worse and complicate things for you personally. So if I’m unhappy what do I do? The Spanish law is very clear, and if you are not happy, then you have two options, the first is to appoint a lawyer personally or secondly you can canvas for support and stand as President at the next AGM, and then you would be the law abiding citizen making the decisions. Some Communities have huge financial issues that are caused by owners not paying fees, promoters or developers who still own properties and are in liquidation, or Banks that have not registered the ownership of the properties, so there is no one to chase unless you can obtain proof of their ownership. When this happens, you always have a group of owners who say ‘if they aren’t paying why should I’ , ‘there is no point in putting good money after bad’ or ‘the Spanish legal system will never catch up with me’. These owners aren’t exactly wrong in the way they are looking at things, but they are only making the situation worse and really jeopardizing the value of their investment in Spain. There are actions that you can take, to at least alleviate the pain of an increasing list of debtors: Firstly, the Community can approve and include in the Statutes a Prohibition for debtors from using the pool and non essential Community installations (paddle courts, communal wifi, etc). You can’t stop debtors from accessing the garage, the lift or cut their water or electricity off, as this would be classed as coercion; but you can limit access to non – essential services. This limitation needs to be unanimously approved at a GM, signed by the President in the Notary, and registered in the Property Registry, so that it will be legally binding for all current and future owners, their tenants and their guests. If you

don’t register it, it will only be binding for those owners who you can prove knew about it (those who voted directly at the meeting). The second action you should implement is a prompt payment discount. Many Communities have a late payment penalty, however, when you eventually see the debtor in Court, you run the risk of only partially wining the legal actions and losing out on the penalty and the court costs. A prompt payment discount is basically a paperwork acton, or an inverted penalty, so you increase the budget, owners who pay on time get the discount (you pay the same as before) and owners, who do not pay or pay late, don’t get the discount, so they have to pay more. We recommend a 20% discount, so if a property is taken over by a Bank, you will recover the current years worth of fees, the 3 previous years, and also the ‘inverted penalty’, in our case 25% of a year’s fee times 3, so we recover 3 years worth of fees plus an extra 75% of a year. Neither of these actions helps in the short run, but at least they mean that you are addressing the long term problem and they will encourage other owners to pay. Regarding Tourist properties, the Spanish legislations is inconsistent, to say the least. In December they approved a law so that Communities can implement a 20% increase on tourist rental properties, but this Legislation was removed in January, so we could never actually put it in place, this proves that being up to date with the Current legislation is a must, that’s why you need a Chartered Community Administrator! Creación de red y eliminación de estación de bombeo en el Puerto Técnicos municipales han desarrollado una memoria para la creación de un nuevo tramo de red de saneamiento, que aumenta la red actual, en una zona interior del Puerto de la Duquesa, en el TM de Manilva. Esto viene como consecuencia de las gestiones llevadas a cabo por el alcalde de Manilva, Mario Jiménez con representantes de dos de las comunidades de propietarios y el chiringuito en la citada zona. El objeto del estudio consiste en la realización de zanjas a tal efecto y la colocación de arquetas de acometida y pozos de conexión para la correcta canalización de las instalaciones existentes en la zona, siempre siguiendo las indicaciones establecidas por Hidralia, compañía concesionaria de la red de

saneamiento municipal. Según comentó el alcalde de Manilva, Mario Jiménez, quien quiso comprobar desde el terreno la proyección de estas obras, con esta actuación se procederá a la eliminación del actual bombeo de residuales ubicado en la zona de playa y se realizará una nueva red para evacuación de aguas fecales de los edificios colindantes, por lo que solucionamos un problema histórico que la Demarcación de Costas estaba exigiendo que se retirara. Implícitamente, esta mejora supondrá contribuir a no dañar el medio ambiente y colaborar en mejorar y cuidar el entorno. En cuanto al plazo de ejecución, se ha programado su realización en dos meses con un presupuesto de 35,000€.

Creation of new sewer network and elimination of pumping station in the Port Municipal technicians have compiled a report for the creation of a new stretch of sewer network, which increases the current network in the area of Puerto de la Duquesa.. 5 PASOS PARA SEGUIR PARA TRAMITAR LA HERENCIA DE UN NO-RESIDENTE O EXPATRIADO EN ESPAÑA Tramitar una herencia en España es una tarea difícil, especialmente cuando no se está familiarizado con las leyes de nuestro país. En este artículo vamos a explicar los pasos básicos a seguir cuando un no residente o expatriado que posee bienes en España fallece. Es necesario llevar a cabo un procedimiento legal para cambiar la titularidad de los bienes del fallecido y que pasen a estar a nombre de sus herederos. 1er paso: Obtener un certificado de defunción original. Este documento oficial puede ser facilitado por la funeraria o conseguirse en el Registro Civil. 2º paso: Obtener los certificados originales del ultimo testamento (en caso de que haya alguno) firmado por el fallecido, al

igual que los certificados de cualquier póliza de seguro de vida que tuviera en vigor. Con estos certificados podemos confirmar si el fallecido había hecho un testamento en España. Hay dos posibilidades: 1. Que haya un testamento hecho fuera o dentro de España. Si este fuera el caso, los bienes se distribuirían de acuerdo a los deseos del fallecido. 2. Que no exista ningún testamento. Si el fallecido nunca hizo un testamento, el reparto de sus bienes se hará siguiendo las leyes del país del cual él tuviera nacionalidad. 3er paso: los herederos o familiares del fallecido deberán firmar una escritura de herencia frente a un Notario público

español para aceptar y repartir los bienes. Hay que tener en cuenta que las deudas también se heredan por lo que, antes de aceptar la herencia, es importante confirmar que el valor de lo heredado es mayor que cualquier posible deuda 4º paso: presentar el formulario 650 en la Oficina local de Hacienda. Para los ciudadanos europeos hay desgravaciones de hasta 1.000.000 euros por cada heredero (en caso de ser familiares directos: esposa e hijos), por lo que en la mayoría de los casos no hay que pagar ningún impuesto. Estos formularios de impuestos deben presentarse en los seis meses siguientes a la fecha del fallecimiento. 5º paso: si el fallecido poseía alguna propiedad inmobiliaria habrá que llevar la escritura de herencia al Registro de la Propiedad; y si el fallecido tenía fondos en cuentas bancarias o pólizas de seguros de vida en vigor, la escritura de herencia deberá llevarse a los correspondientes bancos y compañías de seguros. 5 STEPS TO BE FOLLOWED FOR DEALING WITH AN EXPAT OR NON-RESIDENT INHERITANCE IN SPAIN Organizing an inheritance in Spain is a difficult task for anyone, especially if you don’t know the Spanish law. In this post we explain the basic steps to be followed when a non-resident or expat owning assets in Spain passes away. It is necessary to carry out a legal procedure in order to change the ownership of any of the deceased assets into the name of the heirs. 1st Step: Get an original death certificate. This official document is normally provided by the funeral company or it can also be obtained from the Civil Registry. 2nd Step: Get the original certificates of the last will (if any) signed by the deceased person, as well as the certificates of any life insurance policies in place. With these certificates we can confirm if the deceased person had made a will in Spain. There are two possibilities: 1. a) The existence of a will made in or outside of Spain. If this is this case the assets would be distributed according to the wishes of the deceased. 2. b) Non-existence of a will. If the deceased had never made a will, the distribution of his assets would be made according to the laws of his nationality. 3rd Step: The heirs or relatives of the deceased would be required to sign an inheritance deed in front of a Spanish Public Notary in order to accept and distribute all the assets. Please, be aware that debts are also inherited, so it is important to confirm that the value of the assets is higher than any possible debts before accepting the inheritance. 4th Step: Filing Inheritance Tax Form 650 with the local Tax Office. For EU citizens these are allowances of up to 1.000.000 euros per heir (in case of direct relatives: spouse and children), so in most cases there wouldn’t be any inheritance tax to be paid. The inheritance taxes must be filed within 6 months from the date of the death. 5th Step: If the deceased owned real estate you should then take the inheritance title deeds to the Land Registry or if the deceased had funds, bank accounts or life insurance policies the Inheritance deeds should be taken to the corresponding banks /insurance companies. We recommend hiring the professional services of a solicitor so this procedure can be carried out in an efficient and speedy manner. Ruddock and Co Film Productions in association with Radio Mix 106 will be holding an open call casting on the 13th and 14th of April for an upcoming pilot episode currently entitled “Manilva”. They are looking to discover 8 main characters 4 Male and 4 Female for the first of a Crime Caper series to be filmed locally in May and June. Individuals 18+ are invited from all nationalities (although it will be an advantage if you can speak English) to attend the studios of Mix 106, at the Eroski Centre near Marlows Fish and Chips, between 12 – 4pm on the Audition weekend. The Pilot episode revolves around the introduction of an unlikely group of partners who are drawn together when the swindle devised by a local

pimp goes terribly wrong and then from bad to worse with varying degrees of hilarity. This is a community inspired project celebrating the diversity of the area. Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva, Concert 3 Divas and Coro CantoLibre concert for Age Concern On the evening of Friday 22nd February at the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre in Estepona there was an exceptional evening of music to raise funds in aid of the Estepona and Manilva branch of Age Concern. Three very talented singers, sopranos Cristina Lopez Risueno from Malaga, Marika Rauscher from London and our own local mezzo-soprano Clarice Williams from Estepona, accompanied by pianist Vera Sonia from Jaen, performed pieces from operas including The Magic Flute, Carmen and also “Three Little Maids” from Gilbert & Sullivan’s Mikado. After a selection of typical “zarzuela” songs by de Falla and Sorozabal the Coro CantoLibre performed Salve Marinera and were then joined by the Three Divas for The Merry Widow Waltz, finishing appropriately with Time to Say Goodbye (Con Te Partiro). The interesting programme was enjoyed by a highly appreciative audience, perhaps not least because some pieces were not so well known but beautifully performed. More than 700 euros was raised to help Age Concern continue its extremely important work in our local area. Thanks are given to all the performers and to the Ayuntamiento of Estepona for their assistance in making the evening happen.

Knit & Natter, Stitch & Bitch Needs You! Estepona Floral Art Club Last month members and guests of Estepona Floral Art Club travelled to a number of diverse countries with demonstrator Nina Tucknott. We visited Greece where Nina created a Greek Salad, the tomatoes were red carnations, the feta cheese was white Chrysanthemums and the salad was obviously local foliage, we also saw the delights of the Northern Lights, a very imaginative and entertaining afternoon. This month the Club look forward to welcoming Ann Morgan, Ann got the flower arranging bug when she bought a bunch of supermarket flowers and thought she could do something more with them. Ann joined a local flower club where she joined the Committee and then saw an advert about training to be a demonstrator and the rest, as they say, is history. Ann competes in flower competitions, takes part in flower festivals and at Christmas is invited to help decorate her local stately home.

A new club/group has been formed with the aim of making items such as scarves, hats, blankets etc that can be sold from St. Georges charity shop, Sabinillas to boost funds or could be donated directly to those in need who would be identified via the appropriate organisations. Anyone with any knitting , sewing or crochet skills we need your expertise to help those of us who know nothing about these things! So whether you are a lady or a gent, can knit or not, everyone and anyone can come along and join in ,the more the merrier!

Ann's demonstration, "In the Pink" is on Tuesday March 19, starting promptly at 3pm at Agrojardin, Cancelada. Demonstrations are an enjoyable afternoon of live entertainment where you can appreciate the beauty of flowers, pick up lots of hints and tips on all aspects of floral art, gardening and plant information. In April it is 20 years since the Club was founded and they are having a special, ticket only, event, a wonderful demonstration followed by a tapas lunch. Samaritans in Spain Samaritans is a charity established in the UK by Chad Varah in 1953. Since then it has grown exponentially and more recently, has spread overseas, including Spain. The Samaritans’ main function is to listen to anyone who is experiencing distress. Communication is mostly via telephone, free of charge. All listeners are trained volunteers who serve in rotas and are available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. How many hours or how often they offer their services (‘listen’) is up to the individual volunteer. Samaritans listen to people who are either lonely, or feel themselves unable to express their feelings, concerns, or problems to those around them. They do not ‘counsel’, but provide an em-

pathetic ear. Volunteer listeners are drawn from all backgrounds, all ages, and all walks of life. After initial training all new listeners are supported with mentoring. It is not only those who face life traumas, bereavement, or those burdened with guilt, who contact Samaritans. Anyone who feels the need for emotional support, encouragement and lacking confidence will benefit by talking to a Samaritan. A call to the Samaritans could last a few minutes or much longer, since callers are never rushed. The need for this type of help in the community is exemplified by the rapid expansion of Samaritans in Spain since its inception in September 2005. Increasingly, Samaritans in Spain not only require more volunteer listeners for its

primary function, but also to help in administration, publicity and other varied roles. With branches in Madrid, Denia and shortly on the Costa del Sol, Samaritans in Spain will be able to provide this service to most of Spain's English speaking community.

After a nervous breakdown, losing his job and then his girlfriend, David found it really hard to cope when someone gave him the Samaritans telephone number. “I’d been struggling with stress in my job and in April 2007 I was signed off. “Things gradually got worse and I suffered a nervous breakdown. “In August of that year I lost my job. Then, when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, my girl-

friend left me. I didn’t want someone to tell me what to do, I wanted someone to listen, and that’s what the Samaritans Listener did. “I really began to struggle. I had my family around me, but it was difficult to talk to them and I didn’t want to worry them. “A psychiatrist I’d been seeing because of my breakdown had given me Samaritans number, so I gave it a try. “It was much easier to talk to a stranger, which is why I called Samaritans. The volunteer I spoke to calmed me down and helped me see things more clearly. “I didn’t want someone to tell me what to do, I wanted someone to listen, and that’s what the Samaritans volunteer did. “In March 2009 I felt totally unemployable because I’d been off for 2 years. I decided I needed to sort my life out, I started my own catering business which was

the best thing I’ve ever done. It’s been a success and I now employ 12 people. “With the help of medication and counselling, my depression is controlled. It’s only now that I have been diagnosed with depression that I realise how many people suffer from it and don’t talk about it. Mirror Mirror bar recently hosted a Charity Race Night organised by Mandy Thornton from the Curtain and Bedding Shop in Sabinillas to raise funds to furnish a new women and children's refuge in La Linea run by the charity Hogar Betania. The target of 1,500 euros was smashed thanks to the generosity of

the 100 or so people who attended the night which raised some 2,600 euros. Mandy and Mirror Mirror would like to thank all those local individuals and businesses who donated prizes for the tombola and to the customers who dug deep for this worthy cause.

La Asociación Saint George local de Manilva apoya a la Asociación de Altas Capacidades Los Castillejos en su taller medio ambiental El Sábado, 9 de marzo, la Asociación para el apoyo a las Altas Capacidades Los Castillejos realizó con sus niños y familiares un taller de colocación de cajas nido en el sendero de La Peñuela en nuestra localidad. Dicho taller fue realizado con la colaboración de D. Diego Zumaquero, Ingeniero Agrícola, Licenciado en Ciencias Ambientales y Ornitólogo (director gerente de ECOVERD3) y VIMANSOL como colaboradores altruistas.

Se explicó a los asistentes la importancia de la colocación de las cajas nido, así como los tipos de cajas existentes y la gran variedad de aves insectívoras, así como insectos y otros animales como los murciélagos de gran interés para nuestro medio ambiente. También estuvo en esta cita “pajareros “ de la talla de Andrés Rojas, vecino de la localidad de casares y asociado nuestro y que con tan sólo 13 años ya ha sido partícipe en la “Guía

de Aves de Casares”, gran experto en el avistamiento y fotografía de aves del lugar. Dar las gracias a La asociación St. George “San Jorge” y su Presidente Dean Tyler Shelton de Manilva, los cuales subvencionaron el taller entero, haciendo entrega de las Cajas nido y del catering posterior. También agradecer a Diputación Provincial de Málaga el material didáctico entregado a los niños asistentes.

Charity Networking event a great success

On the 20th of February the Mayor of Manilva Mario Jiménez Rodríguez and Councillors from Manilva Town Hall joined over 40 local business people at the offices of Martínez-Echevarría Abogados in Sabinillas. The event, organized by Shaw Marketing Services, Martínez-Echevarría Abogados and Manilva Town Hall, was held to offer businesses on the Western Costa del Sol an opportunity to expand their contacts, meet potential new clients and explore collaborations with other professionals. This networking event raised money for The Duquesa Charitable Society of St. George, and donated 205€ at the end of the successful evening.

This donation has been allocated to supporting the local group La Asociación para Altas Capacidades Intelectuales Los Castillejos, to put on an educational activity for 25 children and their families. This group helps gifted kids in the area to achieve their full potential, as they often struggle in mainstream schools. Councillor for Commerce of Manilva Town Hall, Dean Tyler Shelton commented; “Networking is fast becoming one of the best ways to put business people, suppliers and consumers together. Some of the best business opportunities are about being in the right place at the right time and this kind of event is key for creating exactly that situation”.

Saint George Charity funds Altas Capacidades Los Castillejos environmental project On Saturday, March 9, the Los Castillejos Association for the Support of Children with High Abilities held a nest boxes workshop with their children and relatives on the La Peñuela path

in Manilva. This workshop was carried out with the collaboration of Mr. Diego Zumaquero, Agricultural Engineer, Bachelor of Environmental Sciences and Ornithologist (managing direc-

tor of ECOVERD3) and VIMANSOL who collaborated in the project. The importance of nest box placement was explained to the participants, as well as the different types of boxes and the great variety of insectivorous birds, as well as insects and other animals such as bats of great value to our environment. Also taking part was Andrés Rojas, a resident of Casares who, at just 13 years of age, has already been a contributor to the "Guide to the Birds of Casares", being a great expert in spotting and photographing of local birds. The Association thanked the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George and its President Dean Tyler Shelton of Manilva, who funded the entire workshop, at a cost of just under 1000 euros, delivering the nest boxes and the subsequent catering. Also thanks went to Málaga Provincial Government for the teaching materials delivered to the children attending.

This group, "Alzheimer & Dementia Support International" has its charity shop in Calle Bolivia next to the Guardia Civil station in Sabinillas. The main objective of the charity is to raise funds for the care and attention for those suffering from Alzheimer's and senile dementia,

BuddyUp (Manilva) Community Support Group In response to a tragic situation earlier in the year a number of local residents came together to form the BuddyUp (Manilva) Community Support Group, a ‘befriending’ group to provide support, comfort and a point of contact for people facing a variety of challenges. The BuddyUp group is coordinated by Marguerite Wilkins, and already has a number of members signed up. Working closely with other local charities and organisations, including the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George, Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva, Citizens’ Advice, Cudeca, Social Services, etc., the group aims to provide support and advice for the elderly, disabled, those who have recently lost a partner, single parents, divorcees, the socially excluded, people that are new to the area, in fact anyone who might need someone to talk to or just pointing in the right direction.

BuddyUp volunteers work in pairs and have access to a wide range of resources to call upon depending on the needs of those they are assisting. Saint George Charity Shops The St George Charity operates three charity shops, two in Sabinillas, Manilva and one in La Cancelada, Estepona. In Sabinillas one of the shops sells quality second hand clothing, shoes, hats and accessories; whilst the other sells a wide range of secondhand furniture, decorative items, household goods, books, cds,

dvds, etc. Our shop in La Cancelada sells the same full range of secondhand items as our Sabinillas shops and also stocks larger items of furniture and beds. Thanks to our generous donors there are new items in the shops daily, so visit regularly so as not to miss out on that fabulous bargain.

As well as stocking some great quality items the St George Charity shops also rent out various items such as wheelchairs, walking aids, travel cots, etc. The shop management welcome donations of quality secondhand items, and can arrange collection if needed. We are also looking for secondhand books, especially in languages other than English, to populate are extensive bookshelves. Food Bank The Saint George Charity runs a food bank initiative to help local people who are finding it difficult to make ends meet, and invites people to donate non-perishable goods, such as long life milk, pasta, rice, biscuits, tinned meat and fish, tinned vegetables, etc., along with toiletries, personal hygiene and cleaning items.

The charity will supplement these items with fresh produce, and will distribute on a weekly basis to a number of individuals and families that have been identified as being in urgent need of this service. Items can be donated at the St George Charity Shop in Calle Aurora Albornoz, Sabinillas, from 10 am to 1.30 pm Monday to Saturday.

Comienza la Escuela de Escritura El concejal de Desarrollo Local, Marcos Ruiz, ha firmado un convenio con el Ateneo "José Román" representado en la figura de su presidente, Juan Emilio Ríos, para que se haga cargo de la Escuela de Escritura de Manilva. Los objetivos que se persiguen en esta recién creada experiencia son enseñar a escribir y leer correctamente, difundir las obras de los principales autores universales, ayudar a la formación del alumnado enseñándoles a expresarse correctamente de forma oral y escrita, darles herramientas para crear su propia obra literaria y asesorarlos para publicar sus escritos inéditos. El precio al mes es de 25 € y las clases se imparten todos los domingos en el Centro de Formación de Sabinillas de 11.00h a 13.00h. The School of Writing is launched The Local Development Councillor, Marcos Ruiz, has signed an agreement with the Ateneo "José Román" cultural association represented by its president, Juan Emilio Ríos, to take over the Writing School of Manilva. The objectives pursued in this newly created experience are to teach to write and read correctly, to disseminate the works of the main universal authors, to help the students' training by teaching them

to express themselves correctly orally and in writing, to give them tools to create their own work, literary and advise them how to publish their original writings. The price per month is €25 and classes are held every Sunday at the Sabinillas Training Centre from 11 am to 1 pm. GREGORIO Gregorio ha conseguido salir del capullo. Hace unos minutos, cuando se dio cuenta de que su cuerpo volvía a ser humano, el primer impulso que tuvo, fue el de llamar a los miembros de su familia y darles la buena noticia. Pero después de meditarlo brevemente, se dijo que no, que no se merecían que volviera a sacrificarse por ellos. Todo lo contrario. Así que dejó la funda de su tormento junto a la puerta y desnudo como vino al mundo salió de la casa por la ventana y se perdió en la oscuridad de la noche. RASTRO Un tenderete y otro... Ahí mismo, de todo hay si lo quieren: ropa, flores, zapatos, discos, juguetes... El sol de las doce lo vende una muchacha. Ah, y el murmullo o el grito de llamada: “¡Ana! ¡Anita! Cuánto tiempo sin verte. (Es inmenso este rastro). Ana, ¿y los niños, y tu marido, cómo están...?”. Esa voz precipitada provista de un sonido popular y firme. Un cesto, una mujer mayor que mira, cómo es posible mirar todavía, ser, buscar entre retales un amarillo claro: “¡Ay, mi nieto, qué guapo estará con el traje que le haré!”. Y todos intentando vender: “...Niña, diez duros, ¡a diez duros menos el kilo!”. El aire, en silencio, moviendo el mantel y acariciando una lámpara, se despierta en mariposa. Más tarde, el viento mueve un toldo; la luz intensa, el tobillo duele y una rozadura del nuevo zapato hace que Elena se detenga, pero allí sin embargo no venden tregua. Llegan al rastro algunos corazones. Otros, presos en el asfalto, compran libertades; y otros, sonido de los pasos, en ecos de la tierra, compran ríos subterráneos. “...Que hermoso el tapiz que ha comprado Paquita”. “No queda ya ninguno...” . Otro grito, otro lucirse con algún retal: “Escoged, escoged... Mirad, aquí hay más, debajo”. ...Comienzan a recoger los tenderetes. Vendieron a quienes no conocían, pero ese trato a la gente... Charity hikers step out for strays On Sunday 3 March 2019 some 16 hikers and their dogs walked to raise funds for Manilva’s registered street cat charity, Asociacion Gatos de Manilva. The walk was organised by Michele Yanez Bowker, a former president of Adana, via her new platform “Fun & Fund” who undertake a walk once a month to raise funds to benefit local charitable causes. The hikers did a circular walk of 11km beginning in the beautiful countryside just south of Casares, walking through the valley, down into the town, then continuing through the new cemetery area and across a river, before completing the challenging, but picturesque, course. Attendees enjoyed stunning scenery on the way, taking in local flora and fauna as well as well as spotting a bird of prey soar overhead carrying a writhing serpent in its beak! An equivalent of 60 floors was climbed by the walkers as they completed the hilly route over a 3 hour period. Thanks to the hike AGDM benefitted to the tune of Eur 256.20 and this sum will go directly to purchasing new humane traps to be used in the municipality of Manilva which will assist the charity in stabilising street cat colonies with their TNR (Trap, Neuter,

Release) protocol. Already close to one hundred feral cats in the Manilva area have been spayed by AGDM, since last Autumn when the charity was officially registered. Amongst the walkers was Dean Tyler Shelton, a Councillor in the Environmental Department of the Ayuntamiento of Manilva. President of AGDM, Amanda Kiff said: “Michele’s platform of “Fun & Fund” has been instrumental in equipping AGDM today with the money we need to buy much-needed equipment. The whole AGDM team is very appreciative of her kind and generous donation and we extend a big thanks to the hard working hikers who took part today. We look forward to more opportunities in the future to collaborate with such a wonderful group of people”. Melissa White, Fundraising Manager for the charity said: “Today was a great success. The weather was beautiful, the hikers did brilliantly and Michele’s promotion of the event helped to raise the local profile of AGDM. Anyone who is interested to attend our next fund-raising event will be welcome. It is a choir concert by “Love To Sing” and a 3-course lunch for Eur 20. This will be held at Bellavista Camping in Manilva at

Las proteínas y las grasas son tus amigas: comer toneladas de azúcar crea un ciclo de bajo nivel de azúcar en la sangre y un sentimiento intenso de hambre e irritabilidad, piensa en carne, pescado, nueces, semillas, legumbres, aguacate,

huevos, etc. Pruebe el arco iris: coma muchos alimentos de diferentes colores, pero frescos, que no sean alimentos preparados o procesados, evitando el pan, las pastas, las salsas, las galletas, los pasteles, los chocolates y el alcohol. Trata de comer siete verduras diferentes al día. Prepárate: prepara comidas desde cero, compra ingredientes frescos y replica tus platos favoritos, pero de forma saludable. Club Rugby del Estrecho News The CR Estrecho Sub 16 rugby team of Adrian Parsons and Tim Brazier continues with their impressive performances on the rugby field.

In February and March they have won all 4 of their league matches away from home against Estacion Rinconada RC 0-90, Jaen Rugby 5-88, C.R. Costa Almería-URA

14-62, Cajasol Ciensias RC 5- 91 and are now top of the league 8 points clear of their main rivals Marianistas de Jerez. The Sub 16 team has worked extremely hard in training over the last 3 months as they prepare themselves for the Spanish Championships in Valladolid at the end of May. They are definitely the fittest team in the league and are improving their overall play week on week. They are both very strong in defense and attack and continue to grow as a team together. Éxito del VI Torneo Internacional de Esgrima organizado por el Club Internacional “AndaluZía” en el Castillo de la Duquesa

El Club Internacional de Esgrima “AndaluZía” junto con el Ayuntamiento de Manilva, Concejalía de Deportes y Cultura han organizado el VI Torneo Internacional Villa de Manilva. Más de 80 participantes de las principales provincias andaluzas, clubes y colegios de la zona tomaron parte en categorías de menores de 10, 12, 15, 17 años y veteranos. Los muros y almenas del Castillo se poblaron de niños y mayores que disfrutaron no solo de una bonita jornada deportiva sino también de una competición de minizorros con la participación de los más pequeños. Acudieron a la cita anual, ya tradicional desde hace seis años, multitud de participantes desde los 3 años de edad hasta los 82 años de la tiradora más

longeva en la categoría de veteranas. Los jóvenes tiradores del Club “AndaluZía” se alzaron con los principales galardones destacando la victoria de María Maldonado en categoría de pre veteranas, medalla de plata para Amelia Deardon, bronce para Hamish Kamaie y Efraim Carrión en categoría en menores de 17 años, con un meritorio podio para Daisy Horne, Gabriel Miño, Alberto Zerrada, Nigel Horne, Fran Pérez, Nicolás Pérez, Sandra Balbín, Igsandra Borges y Daniel Arminio. Consiguieron su condecoración Dani, Leandro, Anastasia, Thomas, Antonio, Killian, Pablo, Ricardo, Kate, Ángela, Alejandra, Nicolás, Eduard, Mindy, Tommy, Andrey, Alberto, Dimma, Carlos, Luis, Lulu, Leo, Freddy, Oliver,

Success at the VI International Fencing Tournament organized by the International Club "AndaluZía" in Castillo de la Duquesa The International Fencing Club "AndaluZía" together with Manilva’s, Department of Sports and Culture have organized the VI Manilva International Fencing Tournament. More than 80 participants from the main Andalucian provinces, clubs and schools in the area took part in categories of under 10, 12, 15, 17 and veterans. The walls and battlements of the Castle were filled with children and adults who enjoyed not only a beautiful sports day but also a children’s ‘minizorros’ competition. Attending this traditional annual event, now in its sixth year, were a multitude of participants from 3 years to 82 years of age, including one of the longest-serving players

in the veterans category. The young fencers of the Club "AndaluZía" won the main awards, particularly highlighting the victory of María Maldonado in the category of pre-veterans, silver medal for Amelia Deardon, bronze for Hamish Kamaie and Efraim Carrión in the U17category, with a meritorious podium for Daisy Horne, Gabriel Miño, Alberto Zerrada, Nigel Horne, Fran Pérez, Nicolás Pérez, Sandra Balbín, Igsandra Borges and Daniel Arminio.
