THE RESIDENT
Welcome to the May issue of The Resident. We enter the beginning of summer with news of some major restructuring of The Resident and its website www.theresident.eu. In this ever-changing world it is important to stay ahead of trends, otherwise you risk oblivion as is the case with a number of publications in recent months. Our plan here at The Resident is to begin a series of improvements that will allow the paper more interaction with its readers and to develop better links with other media platforms including a number of well established Facebook groups and Radio Mix 106 fm. This will entail a redesign of the printed edition of The Resident which will be phased in stages, a revamp of the website, and improvements to our social media presence. Whilst we hope to keep disruption to our services to a minimum there will be a slightly longer period between the publication of this issue and the next which will be back on the streets in July. In the meantime you will still be able to read all the latest news and information on our website. Gary Beaumont, Editor

The Class 15M JI boats were the great dominators of the sailing world sail in the first two decades of the twentieth century. The acronym JI stands for International Rule and under it were built a score of vessels with lengths exceeding 23 metres. Today there are only four survivors in the whole world: Hispania, Mariska, Lady Anne, and Tuiga. And all will be present from July 2 to 8 at the I Marina Sotogrande Classic Week 2018. The Hispania (ESP1) is a sloop of 23.22 metres in length, 4.12 metres beam and a draft of 2.87 metres. Designed by the legendary Scottish naval architect William Fife III and built to order for King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1909 in the Karpard de Pasajes shipyard in Guipúzcoa to participate in international regatas. Its sail area is 410 square meters, with its largest sail measuring more than 80 square meters. The Spanish monarch won several races with the Hispania in hard competition with the Tuiga, a twin sailboat that the 17th Duke of Medinaceli, Luis Jesús Fernández de Córdoba and Salabert, ordered so that the King had a competitor of the same type and size. The history of 'Hispania' is somewhat chequered. After
winning numerous regattas in Spain, England and France, the First World War interrupted the competitions. In 1916 it was acquired by a Norwegian shipowner and in 1936 it returned to England where it was almost abandoned. The English navy seized it and all the ship’s metal items were removed to be melted as war material. Later it was acquired by an English merchant and it was not until 1998, when members of the Hispania Foundation of Vintage Ships discovered it on a beach in West Mersea, near Colchester in the South East of England, where it was used as a home. They acquired it and was transferred to the Fairlie shipyard in Southampton to be restored. After passing through Southampton, in 2006 the Hispania was transferred to Astilleros Mallorca, in Palma, for the completion of its restoration. The 'Hispania' was returned to the water in the summer of 2007, but the Hispania Foundation declared bankruptcy and the ship was saved from the auction by the Isla Ebusitana Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Puerto Sherry, Cádiz, and the boat returned to competition in 2011.

Casares
Access to the Baños de la Hedionda Roman Baths to be controlled to ensure the safety of users and to protect the site
These are new access rules to protect facilities and ensure the safety of bathers, which are put in place before the increase in visits. It must be taken into account that more than 25,000 people visited Baños de la Hedionda from July to mid-September 2017, according to the data quantified by the customer service. The idea, explains the Councillor for Tourism and Culture, Rocio Ruz, is to limit the number of people who can enter the Roman Baths at the same time during the peak hours, from 12 noon to 7 o'clock, from mid-June to mid-September. Therefore, a free booking system will be launched, which can be done through a digital application and at the municipal tourism offices. In order to control the number of
vehicles accessing the site, the council will install a barrier which will be manned by security guards, who will also be in charge of guarding the Baths enclosure and access to the dome. During the summer, the Casares Town Hall will provide a lifeguard and security service, and will intensify the maintenance and cleaning of the area. The Department of Tourism and Culture also plans to restart the Information Service, which this year will be attended by personnel hired through the Remunerated Practices Exchange. For the next summer, the Town Hall is also working on improving the infrastructures of the site, where the signage will be increased to promote responsible use of the site and its surroundings.
Casares Costa celebrates its first Spring Meeting on Sunday, June 3 The Spring Meeting in Casares Costa is a day of coexistence among the residents of the municipality of Casares, and especially among those who live in the Coastal area. Jardines del Rosario and the area of Los Alegres, where most of the activities will be held held. From 12.30 pm there will be various children's and sports activities, with medals for all participants until 2.30 pm to serve the great paella. ANNUAL TAX RETURN TIME If you are resident in Spain for more than 183 days of the year, then you are legally tax resident in Spain and it is time to submit your annual tax return here. You have until the end of June to submit all details of your worldwide income. Many of the locals who live in Spain and work in Gibraltar think that because they have paid income tax in Gibraltar, they do not need to pay in Spain. Not true. Any tax paid in Gibraltar will be taken into account when the calculation is made by the Hacienda on how much you have to pay. In many cases there is nothing more to pay, but sometimes there will be extra tax to pay i.e. the difference between what you paid in Gibraltar and what is due in Spain. This also applies to people receiving pension income from the UK or any other country. For the British, this is more important than ever before. With Brexit looming, it is imperative that you become fully tax resident in Spain before the UK leaves the EU, so get your tax return in early as this year I think there may well be a lot more tax returns being submitted! If you would like to discuss this or any other financial matter in more detail call Pauline Bowden on 616 743 108 or email: pauline.bowden@spectrum-ifa.com The Spectrum IFA Group.

stepona has announced that the town has received four blue flags this year in
recognition of the good state of conservation of its beaches and the quality of the services provided
in them. The Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) announced recently that the awards go to the beaches El Cristo, El Padrón, La Rada and Arroyo Vaquero for meeting the requirements of sustainable development and environmental management required by this agency . The councillor for beaches, Susana Aragón, pointed out that getting one flag more than in 2017 shows the work done by the Council throughout the year to ensure that the beaches are in an optimal state, pointing out that the town has increased the number of health and rescue modules when installing them on the beaches of Arroyo Vaquero and Isdabe. In addition, new equipment was installed at the Cristo beach (2 multiple toilet modules and one rescue module), at La Rada (1 rescue module), and at El Padrón (1 multiple toilet module and 1 rescue module) . New wooden walkways were also placed on the beaches of Cristo,
Padrón and Arroyo Vaquero. The programme also expanded facilities for the disabled with structures installed for the first time on the beaches of Arroyo Vaquero, El Saladillo and Casasola, along with those existing at El Cristo, El Padrón and La Rada which were renewed. Another novelty in the area of beach care has been the extension of the peak season, which reinforces the number of operators on the coast from April to October. Councillor Aragón has indicated that this year, for the first time, the high season will be extended to a period of six months, "so it will give a better response to the tourist needs of the town." In order to carry out this effort on the beaches, the contracts of discontinuous permanent workers will be expanded and six new employees will be hired. On the other hand, Councillor Aragon has mentioned that, facing the summer season, the town will
install 2,000 metres of catwalks, 50 bins, 20 showers and new signage. She also pointed out that the toilet modules, unlike other years, have been open to the public since May 1. The councillor also said that this summer the Town Council will maintain the service of assisted toilets for people with reduced mobility or with some kind of physical disability that prevents them from enjoying the sea independently. In this regard, she stressed that last year more than a hundred sessions were offered to home help users. To facilitate these baths, the Council has material adapted to make the beaches more accessible to people with mobility problems. Specifically, there are 14 adapted loungers, 7 beach walkers with four wheels and 14 sets of amphibious crutches, which are available to anyone who needs them, in order to facilitate their bathing.

Works have begun to improve roads and create a new green area in Costa Galera The project is valued at 175,038 euros
Estepona town council have announced that work has begun on the refurbishment of six roads and the construction of a new green area in Costa Galera, one of the urbanizations located in the western part of the municipality. The Councillor for Development, Infrastructure and Tourism (FIT), Ana Velasco, explained that the pavements and roads will be repaired. In addition, the manholes will be repaired, and road signs will be placed both vertically and horizontally, thus guaranteeing greater safety for pedestrians and drivers. The work in this residential area will be completed with the creation of a new green area, which will have an approximate area of about 1,000 square metres, and which will have a playground for children, a pedestrian path and street furniture, as indicated by the Councillor.
The works, which have been awarded for 175,038 euros plus VAT to the company Hormacesa, will not entail any cost for the municipal coffers because they will be executed under the guarantee deposited in guarantee of the work executed decades ago. In this regard, Velasco recalled that the Town is recovering the guarantees of developers who failed in the past their commitments when they developed their real estate projects in the municipality. The legislation requires developers to deposit bank guarantees to ensure they correctly develop the land where their projects are carried out. "After a complex process, the city is recovering these guarantees, which are being used entirely for the execution of infrastructure improvement works in the different residential areas to which they were linked, "said Velasco.

re you a curious traveller? Do you want a little more than you read in travel guides? Do you want to be taken to places not even mentioned in other travel guides? Then this new series of books is for you. Estepona residents, Nick Nutter and Julie Evans are writing a series of travel guides called 'Visit Andalucia - For the Curious Traveller'. To date they have published two guides, 'The Sherry Triangle' and 'The Road to Manilva - Exploring a forgotten corner of the Costa del Sol'. As Nick says, 'I was a real pain at school, always asking why, how and when. I was the one that asked the deep question just before the end of lesson bell rang. It was only when I was writing for a magazine here in Spain, 'Andalucia Life' that I realised that there are many people out there that always want to know a little more.' The Sherry Triangle explores the three towns that encompass 'the triangle', Sanlucar de Barrameda, Puerto de Santa Maria and Jerez de la Frontera, where to go, what to
do, the sites to see. The history of sherry, how it is made and who makes it is the theme that is interwoven through the book. 'The Road to Manilva - exploring a forgotten corner of the Costa del Sol', as the bye line suggests, explores the municipality of Manilva and more. Manilva has only been an independent municipality since 1796. Before that it was a part of Casares. It is debateable whether or not it would exist at all if it were not for the Barbary pirates. Why, well you will have to read the book. 'You would be surprised just how much there is to discover about this forgotten corner of the Costa del Sol. We have been able to include subjects such as the history of amphorae and Roman roads, both integral to the development of the area from Neolithic times up to the present'. Both published books are available now through Amazon. More Information: nick@duquesagold.com 634 337 930

Inheritance Tax is a tax on acquisition of assets and rights acquired by inheritance. The deceased’s legal heir is responsible for its payment. The deadline for submission and payment of this tax is six months from the date of death of the testator. We must emphasize that, currently, heirs who do not reside in Spain have the same consideration before the law as Residents. This regulatory change was made due to the discrimination between the situations of Residents and Non Residents. Previously Nonresidents could not benefit from a series of benefits which applied to Residents, merely because of their fiscal situation. Nowadays, they can avail themselves of the benefits and reductions established by this new law. As a general rule, the law of the autonomous community where the property and assets of the deceased are located would be applied or, failing that, the law of the location in which the deceased spent most time in Spain would be applied. This year the Law of Successions of Andalusia has undergone important modifications, from 1st January, 2018, inheritances will be exempt from taxation as long as the total amount of the assets inherited is less than one million euro. However, this change is subject to certain conditions, e.g., when the heir is a spouse, a close ascendant or close descendant and the pre-existing heritage of the heir does not exceed one million euro the exemption would be applied; Any Inheritance before 1st January, 2018 is not eligible for this exemption. Before this amendment came into force, the limit for the exemption was 250,000 euro. With this new regulation, by increasing the limit to 1 million euro, it means that tax should be exempt in 99% of cases. As a criticism, we should point out that there is still a group of people who will not be subject to the exemption on amounts up to one million euro, such as those who are not direct close relatives, e.g., grandchildren, cousins, friends etc. Receiving an Inheritance in Spain can be a complex procedure requiring specific knowledge in this particular field. Each case is different, from the stipulated acceptance of the inheritance in front of a Notary, to the calculation and payment of inheritance taxes and the transferring of properties or vehicles into the heir’s name, it is necessary to know the subject in depth to avoid any future misunderstandings. BISM Spring Arts Festival Budding musicians took to the stage to show off their musical talent during the Spring Arts Festival at the British International School of Marbella. Armed with ukuleles, recorders, keyboards and violins, the youngsters put on a number of performances for family, friends and teachers. Miss Stone, who helped organise the event, said: “The children absolutely love the opportunity to show off their talents and perform to an audience. “A selection of our young pianists also performed and we saw how they had really improved their skills. “Some of our young singers bravely took to the stage and entertained us

URBASER - Dealing with the Costa del Sol's rubbish
Some Statistics • Serves 516,000 people on the Costa del Sol • Collects 350,000 tons of domestic waste In Manilva • Serves 14,589 residents plus visitors • Maintains 86 Paper Containers in Manilva • 108 Plastics, Drinks Cartons and Can Containers April
W
ith the topic of recycling very much at the forefront of public consciousness at the moment I was pleased to join Dean Shelton and his staff from Manilva’s Environment Department, along with Sarah and Steph from the local company Eco Passion, to Urbaser’s waste recycling and processing plant on
• Collected 17,612 kilos of Paper • 1.21 kilos per person • Collected 14,480 kilos of plastics and cans • 1 kilo per person the Casares to Estepona road. Not that I would normally get excited by a day trip to the tip, but Urbaser’s facility is an impressive example of the way forward in the disposal of household rubbish. Urbaser are responsible for collecting the household refuse from the eleven municipalities that form the Mancomunidad de Municipalities de Costa del
Sol Occidental, a collective of municipalities from the western Costa del Sol, which pools its resources for activities such as water supply, refuse collection, etc. This covers a population of over half a million residents, which rises dramatically during the summer months due to tourism, generating some 350,000 tons of rubbish.
A
fter a meeting with Juan Carrasco, Plant Manager and Ignacio Fernandez, Urbaser’s head of recovery of recyclables, we headed off on a tour of the facility. One of the key responsibilities taken on by Urbaser is the education of the public, and whilst we were there a party of schoolchildren were enjoying a video on the subject. From the information centre we passed the vehicle weighbridge where the refuse lorries are weighed in and
out allowing the managers to keep a track of the refuse tonnage from each municipality. The first area we visited was the waste reception area, where the refuse lorries unload into large pits from where operators employ large grabs, a little like those machines at the amusement arcade but on a much grander scale, to load the rubbish onto conveyors which then enter the plant. There is a separate pit where all the plastic from the yellow recycling containers is deposited.

nside the plant we were met by a bewildering network of conveyor belts feeding a wide variety of machines that shake, tumble, sift and sort the rubbish, before it carries on to the next stage. It’s at this point that we discovered that all refuse is processed and sorted, passing through machine, weight and optical sorting to recover metals and plastics that didn’t make it to the recycling bins, with the final processing handled by humans. In fact Urbaser recovers 90% of plastics from general refuse. In this way 80% of household refuse is recycled with the remaining 20% compressed into metre and half
bales which are stacked three high and covered with soil. Whilst it is great that these plastic and tin items can be recovered from the general refuse, the town hall has to pay per ton for it to be collected so it makes good sense to sort your refuse before dumping it. Spain has a recycling policy through the not-for-profit organisation Ecoembes. Ecoembes partners with companies such as Urbaser and levies a small charge on all plastic items which bears its mark. This funds the collection of plastics, drinks cartons and cans, without any charge to local town councils. The plastics are collected, sorted and sent to recycling companies

pieces of broken glass, but Urbaser took a gamble on the purchase of equipment which can remove the glass from the compost, a gamble which has paid off in the 12 months since it was installed.
which repurpose it into new items, for example 40 PET plastic water bottles can be converted into a fleece, 80 tin cans go to make a bicycle rim, and just 6 tetrabriks go to make a shoebox. Similarly, glass is recovered through a company called Ecovidrio, again the collection of glass is free of charge to local councils, and given its weight it makes even more sense to place it in the green containers allocated and not into general rubbish which costs the council. One of the things that struck me was the lack of smell, I had steeled myself before entering the plant, fully expecting to be struck by a wall of odour, but surprisingly there was just a faint whiff which was not uncomfortable. Recycling has improved in recent years, but always takes a dip in the summer when the local population increases through tourism. It is an unfortunate fact the visitors don’t tend to recycle their rubbish, even though they might do back at home. Urbaser and the local authorities are working on schemes to encourage and to make it easier for visitors to recycle. Importantly given the current issues in the UK recycling industry, virtually all the recyclables are processed in Spain, and not shipped off around the world to sit in a field in Poland or rot on the dockside in Hong Kong.
A
s I mentioned earlier in this article, Urbaser are keen to educate the public and offer group guided tours of the facility which can be arranged by appointment. If you are interested contact: Jesús Amado Martín email j a m a d o @ u r b a s e r. c o m , telephone: 952 113 784

Put all plastics in the yellow container, don’t worry that you think it may not be recyclable, Urbaser will do the sorting at their plant. Don’t think by using supermarket shopping bags to collect your rubbish in that you are helping. By their nature they are quite tough and create problems at the recycling plant where the machine sometimes has problems breaking them open. Far better to use refuse sacks which are designed with this factor in mind. Urbaser do not process clothing. Clothing can be donated to local charities such as the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George, who can sell it in their shops, on the market, or can pass it to a recycling company who pay a small sum per kilo.

Art Gaucin Open Studios 2018 The Art Gaucin Open Studios weekends have become a wellknown fixture of the art scene in Andalucia, with exhibitions of work by several Spanish and foreign artists. Now well into its second decade,
the Art Gaucin Open Studios event is an opportunity to meet the artists, learn more about their work and techniques, and see and buy their paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs and ceramics. The event is set in the picturesque
Festival Arte Sano village of Gaucin, one of the famous white pueblos near Estepona and Ronda. This year, the Art Gaucin Open Studios will take place over two long weekends – Friday May 25 to Sunday May 27, and Friday June 1 to Sunday June 3 – and will showcase new work by Art Gaucin’s member artists as well as by guest artists Javier Machimbarrena from Spain and Gerrit OppellandHampel from Germany. Launched more than a decade ago, Art Gaucin has built up a strong following both locally in Andalucia and overseas. Its long-established members include Jim Rattenbury, whose paintings and sculptures are in several private collections abroad, and Michael Roschlau, former Glasgow School of Art lecturer and artist whose works include lithographs, paintings and intricate clockwork wall sculptures. Art Gaucin’s roster of painters includes Joseba Sánchez Zabaleta, Ana Pellón, Nozomi Hatano, and Paddy Robinson. The group includes photographers Chris Klees and Vivienne Whiffen as well as ceramicists and sculptors Juan Antonio Sangil, Rosie Venables and Anna McGrane, Sebastian Fisher and Silvia Franco. With its warren of quiet, pretty streets, Gaucin is a delightful place to explore on foot. It has ancient castle ruins, offers spectacular views across the coast and towards Africa, and provides plenty of places to linger over a coffee, tapas or something more substantial while enjoying those panoramas as the village has several popular and celebrated restaurants. Local artisans will also be showing a selection of jewellery, blankets and other handmade crafts. With the upgrading of the road from Gaucin to the coast, access is faster and smoother – now just 45 minutes from Estepona and 40 minutes from Ronda. Six Hard Days In Andalusia by Damian Vargas When an old-time English drug smuggler and his crew meet their end in a bloody shoot-out on the Costa del Sol, it’s of little concern to most. After all, gangsters get killed. It’s what happens in their line of work. Allegiances change. Men die. It’s the way of things. However, when Mary Lawson a.k.a. ‘The Accountant’, a former MI6 agent turned independent contractor to the mob, is instructed by her shady bosses to investigate, things quickly get a lot more complicated. Hardened by her years in British military intelligence and ruthlessly professional, the woman who is no stranger to death and suffering, sets out to find who is responsible. However, on the ‘Costa del Crime’ with its regular influx of millions of tourists, a history of political corruption, and a diverse and thriving criminal underworld, nothing is ever simple. The father that deserted his family. The prodigal daughter, fallen from grace. A hoard of devious, manipulating and violent characters. And an unfortunate British tourist who gets caught up in the middle of the whole bloody mess. Six Hard Days in Andalusia is the first in Damian Vargas’s ‘Costa del Crime’ series of action thrillers. Vargas constructs an enthralling and intricate plot, weaves in a cast of unique characters, and then places them in wonderfullyvisualised, real-world locations in southern Spain. Ex-pats and holidaymakers alike will recognise many of the novel’s settings. Damian Vargas is an emerging author of action thrillers with a vein of dark humour running through them. He lives and works on the western end of the Costa del Sol in southern Spain

Francisco Rodríguez Herrera Del libro: “Vergel humano”
Francisco Rodríguez Herrera Del libro: “Vergel humano”
Francisco Rodríguez Herrera Del libro: “Vergel humano”

CLASSIC NEGRONI Made with Campari, a bitter-sweet red liqueur that’s been around since the 1860’s, Negroni is a cocktail originating in Italy and best enjoyed while lounging around on a sun dappled veranda. One of the earliest reports of the drink came from Orson Welles while working in Rome in 1947. He described a new drink called the Negroni, “The bitters are excellent for your liver, the gin is bad for you. They balance each other.” We like a balanced argument. Thankfully the sun has come out now, so pop down to Kinsale, we can make you a Negroni and dapple the sun all you want. Open every day – Upper Level, Frontline, Puerto de la Duquesa

Saint George Charity presents 5,000 euros to Estepona’s Emaus social kitchen The Duquesa Charitable Society of Saint George recently presented a cheque for 5,000 euros to the Emaus social kitchen in Estepona as the charity’s latest donation in its Feed a Child Campaign. Thanks to contributions by the Saint George Charity of 14,600 euros, and their continued support, the Estepona social kitchen has supplemented its breakfast service, specifically for children to have a packed breakfast and afternoon snack to take to school and not have to go hungry in the mornings. The aim is to alleviate the problems that these children suffer, mainly the lack of concentration and therefore low school performance. The delivery of breakfasts and snacks to the children of the Emmaús Social Kitchen in Estepona began at the end of May, 2016. On average 40 children have been served until the end of the school Term. Twice a week they have delivered to the parents a bag with everything necessary for breakfast and afternoon snack. In the bag, juices, shakes, yogurts,
biscuits, cheese, cereal bars, fruit, etc., are always delivered, aiming to encourage these children to have a balanced diet. During the summer holidays the social kitchen have continued to deliver twice a week this special bag for breakfast / snack for the
children. Thanks go to all the charity's volunteers and donors, along with one of the project's chief fundraisers, Jojo France from Sotogrande to whom both Emaus and the Saint George Charity are grateful.

Love to Sing Choir September 2017 saw the formation of a locally based choir created for those of us who love to sing, having been a choir member previously or not. The "Love to Sing" choir is multi national and at present has approximately 50 members. We meet every Wednesday evening between 7-9pm at Ringos bar, Pueblo Mexicano to rehearse. The choir is extremely lucky to have Shirley Helleur as our musical director, she is an extremely experienced musician and has a wealth of expertise in the business of turning "bath time buskers" into reasonable singers! Throughout the year the choir will perform a repertoire of songs at various events and at each performance any donations collected will be in aid of St. George's charity in order to support the local community and those in need.
We shall look forward to welcoming anyone who would like to come along and join in as meeting people, making new friends and having fun are an important part of our choir. Gentlemen in particular, if you love to sing but are keeping your talents to yourself and the shower, we need more male voices, so don't be shy!
Anyone planning an event and would like Love to Sing to perform, please don't hesitate to contact us. If your event is to raise funds for your charity, any donations go to your cause. For more information please contact Alison 956 616 060 / 656 268 545 Spanish and English spoken.

April a bit too wet for ICE! In fact it was so wet that the hotly contested Golf Spring Cup had to be postponed till a later date. However, the important business of the day – the lunch at La Choza – went ahead as planned, and the Order of Merit for the ten best results from any golfer over the year was awarded to Les Jinks. On the same day the Gardening Club visited the Orchid House in Estepona and were impressed by this spectacular building and the 1,300 species of orchids it houses. Back in March the Ice Players had a hit with their comedy The Worst Day of my Life. A supper was served downstairs, and then we saw how the upper floor of the clubhouse had been transformed into a hospital ward. If we were expecting something along the lines of “Carry on, Nurse” we were not disappointed. Congratulations to all members of the group, and we look forward to your next production. There were lunches out and at the
clubhouse, and special mention must be made of the early St. George’s Day lunch prepared by our Catering Manager Brenda and her team. This month’s highlight though was the 5-day trip to Madrid by AVE, taking in the Royal Palace at Aranjuez, the picturesque village of Chinchón and the grand finale,
a fabulous meal at an Argentine restaurant, complete with tango dancing. Congratulations to Carol on her winner’s certificate! For details of our regular and special activities visit our website: www.siberme.com, and come and meet us at the clubhouse on Bahía Dorada. New and rejoining members are equally welcome.

¿Qué vuelve locos a nuestros gatos y perros?
39
Ronald Rosenfeld D.V.M. Sabinillas - Tel: 656 681 889
What drives our cats and dogs crazy? Cats are affected by anything new while dogs by isolation or overprotection Dogs and cats share the most common reason for their getting upset: stress. The difference between them is what produces it. In the case of cats, changes in their environment or territory (home), such as rearranging furniture, which can be manifested into behaviours such as: an excess of licking, which can lead to injury, use the scratching post (or
furniture) more than normal Or the appearance of baldness or eczema in unusual places, according to Sandra Nieto, veterinarian and supervisor of veterinary centres of Kiwoko. Changes in the behaviour of a stressed cat may also affect the improper use of their sandbox. "Urinating or defecating out of the tray, even if the sand is clean and away from food, is a way to get your
attention and express themselves," adds the veterinarian. Cats tend to internalise. "They are animals that get stressed very easily, even if we think they lead a quiet carefree life without any problems, because we see them dozing on the sofa," explains Nieto. And cats tend to disguise their weaknesses/feelings, including when they are upset or nervous, so it is more difficult to detect their psychological problems and therefore take them less frequently to the vet. Likewise, jealousy is another of the habitual causes of alterations of feline behaviour, that can be manifested in aggressions to one or several members of the family. What about the dogs? What upsets them? These are social and gregarious animals that need the company of their group to have a healthy mind. The most common causes that provoke psychological problems are: traumatic experiences (abandonment or abuse),
as well as over humanizing, overprotecting or isolating them, that can cause behavioural alterations such as: aggressiveness, compulsive barking, self-mutilation, nervousness and repetitive movements, such as chasing their tail or repeatedly turning around and around on themselves.
Treatments and solutions
The treatment of compulsive behaviour of the dog or cat is designed to detect the cause that triggers it, to try to reduce stress, avoid punishment by the owners, encourage physical activity and, in some cases, the additional use of a pharmacological treatment that will be prescribed by a Veterinarian, should they consider it necessary, recommends the veterinarian Ana Cameno. There are specific solutions to pet stress: Aromas that reassure the cat or the dog,

Ronald Rosenfeld D.V.M. Sabinillas - Tel: 656 681 889
the use of some synthetic olfactory pheromones in a spray or diffuser, which lowers their stress levels. Patience in the face of jealousy. If the problem is jealousy, you just have to be patient, because they are usually transient behaviour and will disappear after a while. Another feline or canine companion should help to avoid boredom. If the owners can afford it and are willing to take up the adaptation period when another pet comes into the home, this may be an appropriate solution for the feline or canine to feel accompanied and therefore to prevent misconduct that affect the coexistence with the animal at home. The best detectors of the psychological problems of dogs and cats are their owners. For this reason, it is appropriate to evaluate behavioural changes and go to the veterinarian to take measures that solve the psychological problems that impair their quality of life and happiness.

Many people runsome competitively, some for fun and some for ‘ head space’ For most people they just slip on their trainers and head out for a comfy 3,5,10 k run. BUT- it’s very rare you hear someone say ‘ I’m off for a sprint’ Running and sprinting are vigorous intensity exercises. While they both use the same muscle groups, the difference lies in speed. Sprinting is a more powerful, faster form of running that can only be performed in short spurts. I am currently working closely with a former Spanish sprint champion Juan Anelo , he’s won medals at many high level championships, and is now spearheading a ‘sprint’ school based in Sotogrande. Sprinting is very technical- and I realized very quickly there are many areas for errors. There are 4 main phases of sprinting , start, accelerating, maintaining speed, and deceleration and within these areas there are many different and very specific drills
that can identify weakness , risk to injury or even the ability to run faster. They look at foot placement , ankle mobility, core stability, shoulder positions plus many others. It’s very easy to see those that will struggle to run, not because they can’t learn but because their bodies are moving in the wrong patterns or with bad habits. From these drills, you can workout what areas need stretching, stabilizing and strengthening. And, with practice this is how your running technique and speed will improve. Whether you run for fun or competition, most people can reduce the risk of injury, improve their speed or even just feel more comfortable by learning some basic skills . The sprint group is open to all levels from aged 8 years upwards , whatever your level. The courses are run 1 hour per week for 4 weeks, different days/ times ( based on ability and not age). ¡Sprinting!

The Gecko on the Wall The world of golf through the eyes of Calum McGregor
Professional tour caddies, will never become extinct
M
issing the cut, is a horrible feeling. One I never want to get used to. As I sit here now, having just missed the weekend, I look around at my small cheap hostel room that has been my home for the week. No cupboard space means my luggage has resided on the floor, next to a pile of dirty laundry. My wet caddie outfits are hanging in the small shower cubicle that is no wider than the width of my shoulders, and with every scalding turn I knocked the handle to scorching hot. The tiny room has provided me with a place to sleep in between soaking wet rounds on wind blasted and water logged fairways, but tomorrow I will pack my semi moist gear into my bag and head to the next destination on my journey. Without a full time bag on the main tour, some die hard caddies, in the hope of work, follow the traveling circus of the Challenge Tour. At their own expense, they travel thousands of kilometres on trains, planes, ferry’s and busses to get to the next event venue. They fork out their own money and sleep in the cheapest accommodation they can find to have the pleasure of “going on the spit”, the indignity of hanging around the golf club entrance, hoping to spot a friendly face who will employ them for a week. Standing at the club house entrance, looking for golfers carrying their own bags, is almost a caddie initiation, a rite of passage into the crazy caddie lifestyle, a test you have the steel and determination
required to actually handle the job. Unfortunately for the boys on the spit, most of the players on the smaller tours don’t use caddies, as it is an added expense that most can’t afford. Yes some famous golfers have private jets, million dollar yachts and luxury mansions, but those are few and far between. Most professional golfers haven’t won a famous green jacket or lifted the sought after Claret jug. US Opens and Race to Dubai winners are only once a year, and until a player wins a major title, they aren’t included in the million dollar circle. More than ninety percent, if not more, are struggling pros, trying to make a living by competing in tournaments across the globe and without victories all they earn are expenses and plenty of them. Most of the golfers arriving at a tournament venue, smile a polite hello and shake hands with the caddies on the spit, but unfortunately they have small families at home and young mouths to feed, so they wish the caddies good luck in finding work, and thankfully decline their offer. Those are the genuinely friendly players that the caddies wish they could work for. They are nice guys that make the hours spent working together, enjoyable and stress free. Which normally result in a successful partnership. Considering the most important key to a successful caddie/player partnership is down to personalities and communication. Spending hours a day on a cold rainy field, huddling together against the elements, fighting and grinding as a team, is a lot easier when you like
and get on with the person you are with. When you feel a fondness for a player as a person, the caddie wants to support in the mutual cause of making cuts. Even if they know it could be a short lived affair. Yes the caddie gets 10% of the victory money, but in my opinion that’s only fair, considering they usually take ninety percent of the blame. Until a caddie finds his match in a player, they will spend their time working for whoever is willing to help pay their travel expenses. Someone to help fund their quest. With a shake of hands and no promise of a guarantee, a caddie will hump a player’s heavy tour bag around a rain soaked course for up to twelve hours, for a day’s wage that is sometimes paid in a few weeks’ time. Apart from the physical exertion, the caddies will have to smile as they listen to excuses and absorb the blame and abuse. Chasing after thrown clubs, giving the wrong yardages, reading the wrong lines, and not raking the bunkers properly, all part of a day’s work that can end with a minutes notice. The reason the few crazy surviving caddies do this thankless task, are downstairs as I write. In the cheap ground floor hostel bar, is a party of caddies, mad enough to endure the journey. Gathering for the night’s festivities, I know that “Schneibs” my roomate Scotsman is downstairs having a beer after a week with No Spark accompanied by “Moto GP”, who also never managed to get his player across the cut line. “Carlos Valderrama”,
the Argentinian caddie Maradona, will be toasting “Polo” with a bottle of rioja, both preparing for the tournament weekend ahead. “Little John” who carried a bag bigger than him will be chugging beers with sidekick “Harry Henderson” the Parkhouse-Crolla who both managed to get to minus two and have been paired to play together in the morning. I will join “Smoking Joe Frazer”, “Elevenareef”, “Plastic Duck” and “Pistol Pete”, and together we will commiserate defeat. The “Protein fiend” has an early night because he is only three behind the lead. But the rest of us will share stories probably late into the night. Heading for the next tournament venue in search of adventure and a new story to unfold, a true caddie just never gets old. The dream of finding their perfect partner still burning in every caddies minds, as they hump and sweat during their daily grind. Caddies will always be waiting for their player, one adven-
ture at a time. Back in my humble abode after a night of laughter, I start to look forward to my next adventure and realise that I have the best job in the world. Who can travel from country to country doing something that they love, earning good money along the way? Who meets incredible people with each new destination? Experiencing new cultures, different customs, eating exotic gastronomy, whilst hearing new languages on a weekly basis is the norm. What profession gives you the opportunity to make friends with locals in each town or city you visit, whilst building a brotherhood with the people you travel with. Next week I will have forgotten about the rain whipped fairways and perhaps even the missed cut. I will be walking along the fairways of a sun-drenched Mediterranean golf course. My apartment is on the beach and my fishing rods will be soaking at night. After drinking a bottle of red, I’ll let Schneibs check this over while I go to bed.

Valle Romano golf to host the Andalucía Costa del Sol Match play 9
Alfie Plants seeds of future success at Valle Romano
The second edition of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Match Play 9 will be held at the stunning Valle Romano Golf in southern Spain from May 17-20. Following a successful first staging last season, the picturesque coastal town of Estepona will now host the second edition of the innovative event, won last year by England’s Aaron Rai. The exciting format comprises of 36 holes of stroke play with the top 64 European Challenge Tour players making it through to the weekend – where they will compete in a series of nine-hole match play battles for a €200,000 prize fund. Valle Romano Golf boasts a phenomenal championship course, with signature holes named after famous Spanish players – hole two is named after José Maria Olazábal, hole five is named after Miguel Ángel Jiménez while hole nine is the ‘Seve Ballesteros hole’. The Cabell B. Robinson-designed course, which hosted the Second Stage of Qualifying School in 2013, has a challenging parkland layout which measures 6975 yards and is known for its fast greens.
Joining the field at the Andalucía Match Play Challenge at Valle Romano, is the winner of the Silver Medal at last year’s 146th Open Championship, Alfie Plant. The 25 year old will tee it up at Valla Romano, as he starts his rookie season as a professional player. Plant turned professional six months ago after a glittering amateur career that culminated in him competing in last year’s Walker Cup. Alfie also won the European Amateur Champion, earning a place at the Open where he enjoyed a memorable week at Royal Birkdale. Carding a third round 69 en route to a tie for 62nd place alongside 2011 Masters Tournament winner Charl Schwartzel and finishing as the top amateur golfer of the year. “I’m really excited to get going,” he said. “It’s been a long winter back home and it’s nice to finally get a card. “I was pretty consistent as an amateur so it’d be nice out here – in my first year – to get really consistent and make most of the cuts. “I want to try and get in contention a few times and just see how it goes. “At the minute, because I’m playing off invites all year, a top ten finish would signal a great week. It would mean that I’d get into next week and try and get some momentum going. “Top ten is my aim this week and every week.” The London born player and passionate Millwall Football club supporter, cherishes the memories of his Silver Medal win – the prize awarded to the top amateur at the world’s oldest Major Championship – but insists the Challenge Tour is a different task altogether. “The Open was a dream come true last year,” he said. “I had a great week there at Birkdale and that’s going to be in my memory forever. “It’s a completely different game now in a different ball park, so hopefully I can get a few good scores and see how it goes.” Playing against some of the best professional golfers in the world, Alfie will have to find his feet as a rookie professional. It’s going to take a little time to adjust to the professional ranks but with Alfie’s talent, it shouldn’t take too long.

The Andalucía Costa del Sol Match Play 9, the only match play event on the 2018 Challenge Tour schedule, is one of two Spanish tournaments which will take place this season and will be played two weeks after the Challenge de España. Alain de Soultrait, European Challenge Tour Director, said: “We are delighted to confirm that the Andalucía Costa del Sol
Match Play 9 will take place at the beautiful Valle Romano Golf. “Last year’s match play format proved very popular among players and fans alike, and we are thrilled that we have kept this exciting format for this year’s event. “The golf course is in excellent condition with incredibly fast greens, which I am sure will provide the perfect setting for the nine-hole match play contests”
Alfie is no stranger to the area, having competed in last year’s Valderrama Masters, where he successfully made his first cut on the European Tour as a professional golfer. His swashbuckling style of golf, paired with his “never give in” attitude is reminiscent of a young Seve. Accompanied by his friendly manners and jovial nature, Alfie is a favourite amongst the golfing fans who come to support him. Affectionately known as Alfie’s Army, his supporters can often be heard cheering him on from across the course. Plant ended his amateur career by competing in the 2017 Walker Cup, the most prestigious tournament in amateur golf, and there is now a strong British contingent from that Great Britain and Ireland team competing on the Challenge Tour, with the likes of Jack Singh Brar finishing tied second in the Turkish Airlines Challenge and Scott Gregory who is also in the field of players. “There’s a good group of lads coming through from the amateur ranks,” he said. “We’ve played together for a few years now so it’ll be nice if a few of us can get through and crack right on. “We’ve got some great British guys out there at the minute but they need a new crop to follow them through and crack on. Hopefully we can keep the crowds pleased in the future.” Joining Plant in Spain is Denmark’s Joachim B. Hansen who is in fine form. Following a share of second place in China last month the 27 year old went one better in his next event at the Turkish Airlines Challenge where he secured his maiden Challenge Tour title. Another player at the peak of his powers is Chile’s Nico Geyger who has recorded back-to-back top five finishes in his first two Challenge Tour starts of the season.

In addition, this achievement will make these students participate, if they are selected by the Spanish Fencing Federation, in the World Championship of Artistic Fencing. The scenic fencing is a fundamental subject in the formation of actors, dancers and singers, because thanks to it, the artists know how to recreate the old duels, and battles of yesteryear, they learn the art of creating, integrating and performing choreographies of scenes of fights within the performance, be it theatrical representation, historical recreation, spectacle, television or film scene.

The Mental Caddie After publishing The Mental Caddie, (available on Amazon) I was inundated with people asking me if the book was about me being a crazy or mental caddie, knowing that I work as a golf coach and professional tour caddie. Others asked if the book was written only for caddies and professional golfers to read. I had to constantly explain to people that the book was written in such a way that non-golfers could enjoy the read. The reader gets to find out what goes through the mind of a professional golfer during a tournament. How do the player’s mentally prepare themselves for a competitive round of golf and how do they train and practice to achieve the best results possible? Being a full time caddie I spend a lot of time around the world’s finest professional golfers, watching and learning. I pass on all the knowledge I have gathered to my young amateur golfers, who also hope to make it one day in the world of pro golf. I teach these young impressionable minds with stories and anecdotes, through humour and fun. My pearls of wisdom and how I delivered them while caddying, have produced some amazing stories of miracles and success. That is what my book is all about. It was written to inspire people, to
give the reader a feel for my passion and love for the mental game of golf. A saddening statistic in the world of golf is that there is as many people a year who take up the game, as there is who leave it. I have heard stories of people going for a first lesson in golf and getting so disheartened that they can’t hit the ball, they never try again. The coaches they went to, broke their golfing spirit before even teaching them passion and creativity. I challenged a few nongolfer friends of mine to read The Mental Caddie and as I hoped, they all wanted to try out the cerebral sport. Inspired by the opportunity to welcome newcomers to the sport of golf, I developed a teaching/training programme that will give newcomers and mid to high handicap golfers a complete new way to look at golf. My backwards golf teaching, combines the elements of mental strength and physical ability. In only a few short hours, a com-
plete novice can start thinking like a pro, using practice drills used by the top players on tour. The Backwards golf program creates a passion in the new player, an instant understanding of the mental state of mind you need to be in when playing golf. My backwards golf teaching method helps new players build their unique swing that fits their body size and flexibility.
