THE RESIDENT Julio - July 2016

Gracias

Welcome to the July issue of The Resident. I’d like to to begin this editorial with the ‘Elephant in the Room’, namely the UK’s referendum vote to leave the European Union. I could probably fill this issue with articles regarding the fallout and possible ramifications of this decision, but as I have always stated I am not a journalist, rather I’m an information junkie, and The Resident has built its reputation by providing factual news and information on which our readers can rely on for accuracy. Well therein lies the problem there are so few facts that I‘m reluctant to try to outline the possible consequences. There are a few things that are certain, nothing will change for at least a couple of years, so once the dust settles we will hopefully be able to see the way forward with at least some clarity. In the meantime now is probably a good time, if you haven’t done so already, to get all your paperwork in order, such as residency, driving licences, and anything else that you may have been putting off, as whatever happens it could affect how you are viewed by the Spanish authorities should things become ‘awkward’. It wasn’t just the British (at least those that were allowed to vote) who were at the polls recently, Spain had a second go at electing a government on Sunday 26 June, after failing to give a majority to any single party and the breakdown of subsequent coalition attempts. Well as expected once again no single party gained a majority and whilst there were a few changes to the number of seats won, these wouldn’t be sufficient to make a big difference to the horse trading that will ensue, that could see a PP-PSOE coalition in a similar vein to Britain’s Conservative-LibDem coalition of 2010, although that would take a level of compromise unheard of in Spanish politics. All that aside, I’d like to mention a couple of developments at The Resident which include an improvement to the look and feel of the paper. I would also like to welcome Calum McGregor, who many of you will know from his ‘Rock Hard Caddie’ series of books, who will be in charge of The Resident’s newly expanded sports section. Well that’s all for this month, I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to talking to you again next month with news of more improvements to The Resident. Gary Beaumont, Editor

Gibraltar airport tunnel works to resume

T

he Government of Gibraltar has announced that it has finally negotiated a settlement with the contractor Obrascon Huarte Lain SA to complete the tunnel under the eastern end of the runway. This settlement will avoid further delays by requiring the contractor to complete the tunnel by 30 November 2018 and at a cost close to the original 2008 tender. OHL originally started work on the project but, after the Gibraltar Government terminated the contract in August 2011, the company commenced proceedings against the Government. The subsequent extended legal dispute came to an end in July 2015 when the Court of Appeal dismissed an OHL claim on liability and was refused leave to appeal to the UK Supreme Court. The trial to assess the exact amount of damages to be paid by OHL to the Government was expected to start the year after next, but this announcement signals the end of those legal proceedings. Having originally contracted to pay OHL £30m for the tunnel in 2008, OHL will now receive a total sum of no more than £24m to include monies already paid. The reduction in price will help compensate the Gibraltar Government for costs and expenses

The tunnel at the east end of the runway will help reduce traffic congestion during aircraft movements incurred since termination. These include certain works undertaken directly by GJBS. Under the completion contract, OHL has agreed to bring in a completely new team to work on the tunnel project and have appointed members of its international

division to ensure the delivery of the project in accordance with its obligations. OHL will be setting up on site during the early part of July although official commencement under the completion contract will be 1 August 2016.

How the ‘Hug of Life’ saved a local musician’s life

Local musician and radio presenter Pete Black, recently enjoyed a reunion with the man who, just a few years ago, saved his life. Pete and his wife Anne-Marie went to Paris to see Bruce Springsteen about five years ago. On the way back they stayed in a little place called Roissy outside Charles de Gaulle airport. On their last night they went out for a meal at a busy restaurant, and Pete ordered the steak. After just a few mouthfuls he began to choke on a piece of gristle, realising that he was in trouble, he stood up and tried to get somebody to help him. The restaurant was full of French people, who just stared, not understanding his predicament. He began to lose consciousness really quickly and everything went white. Fortunately for Pete it turned out that on the next table was an American, Joe Jansons Palindrani, a veteran US Marine who quickly administered the Heimlich Manoeuvre, thus saving his life. It all could have turned out so much

worse as Joe and his wife Mara were only there because they had been double booked in another restaurant and thankfully ended up next to Pete and Anne-Marie. Joe then proceed to tell Pete that this was the fifth or sixth time he had saved someone's life with this procedure. They live in California and Pete and Joe had stayed in touch ever since, and met up last month when they were on a Mediterranean cruise with a stop off at Gibraltar giving Pete and Anne-Marie the opportunity to see them again. That is not the end of the story though, before they parted in Paris, Joe had told Pete to learn the Heimlich Manoeuvre and a couple of years ago Pete was called on to save a friend's daughter who was choking on a toy from a Kinder egg. How amazing is that? So along with basic CPR everyone should learn this simple procedure and you too might save someone’s life.

Gibraltar as the economic engine for the whole area to uphold the jobs and prosperity of Gibraltarians, other residents of Gibraltar and of the Campo Area citizens who work on the Rock.” The Mayor of La Linea expressed his satisfaction over the meeting and asked the Campo Area to remain calm because: “The Chief Minister had expressed the commitment to maintain jobs for frontier workers which were of total priority.” Juan

Jellyfish - There’s an app for that InfoMedusa is a mobile application, developed in both iOS and Android, which reports on the activity of jellyfish on the beaches of Malaga. The increase in jellyfish in recent years on the beaches of the province of Malaga is a concern for both bathers and employers in the tourism sector. This initiative began to take shape in June 2013 and since then has provided information and prevention, including an application for mobile devices, InfoMedusa, which warns users of the presence of these pests, their numbers, variety and potential danger, to avoid stings. InfoMedusa is backed by a network of local observers spanning the Malaga coast, who update the application, including public chat in which anyone with the application can collaborate with their commentary on local conditions. The app provides information on individual beaches throughout the Province and as well as jellyfish reports it also has reports on weather and sea conditions along with information about what to do if stung.

Casares The Town Hall has asked the Ministry of Environment to perform an inspection of the Paloma and Infierno pools Given the concerns raised by some residents and visitors to the area, the Casares town hall has asked the Ministry of Environment to conduct a survey of the course of the Manilva river to determine the causes of the state of severe drought affecting the Paloma and Infierno pools. Many individuals have expressed their surprise at the situation of complete drought affecting both pools. Some experts believe that the drought is due to the lack of rain,

the water level decreases more as it is a karstic area and something similar happened in the '60s. Meanwhile, others point to bad human practices as a possible cause of this situation. In respect of this the town hall has advised that if anyone has any evidence of misuse causing this drought, it should be brought to the attention of the Department of Environment, or the Junta de Andalucia should be notified, as they are responsible for issues with water.

Casares informs the Coastal authority and the Ministry of Culture of acts of vandalism at the the Salt Tower Two letters have been sent to the Ministry of Culture and Coastal authority by the Casares Department of Culture informing the bodies of the damage caused to the Torre de la Sal (Salt Tower) by vandals. It calls on both these organisms to repair the damage to the wall and to one of the entrances with the utmost urgency in order to prevent it affecting the rest of the monument. Although the Torre de la Sal belongs to the Ministry of State Finance, of the Coastal Authority of Eastern Andalucia is responsible

for managing this building, as it is in a maritime terrestrial zone. Therefore, this entity should undertake the repair work, however, the work must be authorized by the Andalucian Ministry of Culture as it is a monument of cultural value The Torre de la Sal has two stories, and also has the peculiarity of a square layout, unlike the rest of the defensive towers found along the coast. Although of Moorish origin, the building was completed during the reign of Charles I, in the sixteenth century, and belongs to the official system of maritime towers.

Letters have been sent to these

owners demanding a 60 euro fee for the regularization of the properties. Owners of affected properties will also be subject to retroactive payment of applicable taxes for the years 2013 to 2016 as a result of the increased value of the properties.

Given that cardiac arrest from coronary heart disease is the leading cause of deaths among the adult population, and the specific cases which have occurred in recent months in Casares, the town hall has acquired a defibrillator that will be installed in the Plaza de España. The intention is to provide this equipment so it can be used by people in the area in case of an emergency, training in it’s use will be provided to volunteers. The defibrillator will be housed in a special booth on the wall opposite the Cosme butchers, which will be lit and have an alarm system, although it will be open to allow immediate access.

With regard to training, a course for 25 people is being arranged, of which 50% of places will be for the general population, 25% for hoteliers and merchants of the Plaza España and 25% for local municipal staff carrying out activities related to sport and leisure.

Saharan children arrive in Casares for a 'Holiday in Peace' This month 1,230 refugees from camps in the Algerian province of Tindouf have arrived in Andalucia, and will remain until the end of August. Five of these children will spend the summer in the town of Casares with local families, enjoying a different way of life to the one they are used to in the refugee camps which reach infernal temperatures during the summer. The families hosting the children agree that this is a very enriching experience, because while it gives the children the opportunity to spend some time away from the harsh conditions they live with in

the desert, they learn a lot about their values and a different way of life. The group of 1,230 children who have come to Andalusia is part of the total of over 4,500 children who will spend this summer with Spanish families to enjoy the summer holidays in peace. The Association of Friends of the Saharan people of Casares, Karama, performs year-round fundraising activities to help Saharan refugees in Tindouf and to fund part of the cost of air travel for the young people who will spend their holidays in Casares.

Post Brexit - Living In Spain Firstly, I should like to reassure my clients and friends that we are an EU licensed IFA firm, not a UK or Gibraltarian firm trading under EU passporting arrangements. Most of the products we recommend are individually EU compliant based in Dublin, so no change there. Secondly, until Article 50 has been implemented, we are all still EU citizens and will remain so until negotiations for UK departure have been finalised or at least 2 years from the declaration of intention to leave the EU. Nothing has changed – yet. It will do and exactly how we do not know yet. The British ambassador to Spain and the current Prime Minister for Spain ( at the time of writing one day before the General election!) have assured us all that we need not panic, we have plenty of time to sort our affairs out. Most of us will be fine, we might need a bit more paperwork but Spain are not going to get rid of the many British people who live and work

here, pay taxes and social security here. We contribute too much to the economy, as do the Spaniards that live and work in the UK paying taxes and social security. For those living in Spain and working in Gibraltar the matter is different and politically complicated. Some companies that passport their businesses into the EU have indicated that they might leave Gibraltar and I know a lot of worried people not knowing if they will have a job in 2 years’ time. Perhaps you should seriously think about getting your Spanish social security card as I detailed in my article last month. “Each individual working and paying social security in Gibraltar can elect for those payments to be transferred to their local social security office in Spain”.

We would like to send a crystal clear message to every single British resident or second home owner living in Manilva. You have made our town your home and you are more than welcome to be here, sharing the best of what we have. We are only a small town on the western edge of the Costa del Sol Region of Southern Spain but we would like to take this opportunity to express to you our enormous gratitude for the cultural, economical and social contribution you make to our home. Our sentiment and resolution will not change because of the negative result of the Brexit referendum. There are well over three thousand British expats currently registered as living in Manilva on a permanent basis, and that’s without going into how many thousands are invested

here in one way or another, you all bring huge benefits to our town, investing in businesses, buying homes, paying taxes and social security, working and contributing to our everyday lives and enriching our cultural diversity. It now falls to us as a community to pick up the pieces and to make sure any changes that may come in time are as painless as possible for you all, whilst hoping there will be few, if any at all. Furthermore it is all of our responsibility to help heal the many divisions that have arisen amongst families, friends and neighbours throughout the whole period of this campaign. Now we would like to use a common and much used phrase; It’s now time to focus on what unites us, rather than that which divides us.

Roman Oasis reopens for its 34th year

You know when summer has really arrived because The Roman Oasis Restaurant near Sabinillas is open again and this year marks its 34th, which testifies to the success it has achieved. A most unusual restaurant it is indeed which Keith Floyd described admirably, ‘It is one of my favourite places on the glittering, but slightly tarnished, Costa del Sol. It is without doubt the most eccentric and amusing venue on the coast. There is Paul Hickling, proprietor extraordinaire, there are the parrots, and there are the most wonderful staff. The food is simple, plentiful and pleasing, the music is great, the drinks are fine.’

Fibre optic broadband soon to be available in Manilva

O

ne of the ongoing projects in Manilva will soon make fibre optic broadband available to residents. After studying feasibility and the telephone company’s prerequisites, councillor Antonio Barragan has announced that the process is now in it’s final stage. The next step will see the works put out to tender and then completed. From here offers from different

companies in the municipality will be presented and the town hall will decide which is most suitable for municipal interests. Optical fibre is a means of communication, habitually used in data networks and telecommunications, consisting of a very fine line of transparent material, glass or plastic, which uses light pulses to represent the data which is being transmitted.

Go for the Gladiatehere Buffet which consists of soups, 25 starters and a great choice of meats from the barbecue or choose the Á La Carte menu served to your table. Then there’s home made desserts and an amazing choice of 100 ports from 1910 plus Stilton cheese. The atmosphere is amazing, the service and attention to detail is faultless. So if you want a romantic night dining under the stars then try something completely different, head to Sabinillas, turn inland at Lidl’s and go three kilometres. Open every evening from 7.30. www.romanoasis.com Tel. 952 892 380.

Once the bureaucratic process has been completed, it will take about ten days for the project to be executed and it is estimated that by early August fibre optic will be available for everyone. In addition to the introduction of fiber optics, the section from the Las Viñas secondary school towards the Manilva Peñoncillo will be paved.

Manilva's fishermen prepare to celebrate their patron the Virgen del Carmen Saturday, July 16 is the celebration of the Virgen del Carmen, the Patron Saint of fishermen and sailors. Tradition has it that the Carmelite monks, who inhabited the slopes of Mount Carmel and worshipped the Virgin Mary who had appeared there in a vision, were forced to flee by a Saracen invasion force. During this eviction the Virgin appeared to them again and promised to be their ‘Star of the Sea’ and to guide them to safety. Since then she has been the patron saint of mariners and, as such, the Virgen del Carmen is revered amongst the local fishing communities of southern Spain . Virgen del Carmen is celebrated by the fishing communities in Sabinillas and Castillo. The Virgen del Carmen is Castillo de la Duquesa’s Patron Saint and on her feast day, 16th July, her images are placed on board the local fishing boats in two separate ceremonies: the first off the beach at Sabinillas amongst much pomp and ceremony (this can be quite a ‘hairy’ operation, especially if the sea is a bit lively); and the second in the Port of Duquesa. The two boats bearing the Virgens, along with with a flotilla of fishing and pleasure craft, then parade up and down the coast from the Salt Tower on Casares Costa to Punta Chullera before disembarking in Sabinillas and the marina at

Puerto de la Duquesa to be borne back to her place of honour in the churches at Sabinillas and Castillo respectively. If the sea is too rough, particularly during strong easterly winds, the Sabinillas ‘Virgen’ will be paraded along the beach rather than taken to sea and the Castillo ‘Virgen’ will remain in Duquesa Port.

Programme 2016 Castillo 6.00 pm – A mass will be held at the parrish church in Castillo after which the procession will proceed to Duquesa where the Virgen will be placed on the chosen boat and then paraded up and down the coast accompanied by the rest of the ‘fleet’. 10 pm – Live music in Castillo with Orquesta Kalima until the early hours of the morning. Sabinillas 12 noon – A mass will be held in the ‘Fishermen’s Square’ in Sabinillas. Later in the afternoon at around 7.30 to 8 pm (ish) the statue of the Virgen will be carried to the beach in Sabinillas where it is placed on a fishing boat. From 10 pm there will be entertainment by Orquesta Latidos with music and dancing into the early hours of the morning.

The local bus service is extended with a new line covering the western area of town The Estepona town hall has stated that the public transport concessionaire, Ricardo Coaches, will extend the public service with a new line that will connect the town center with the western part of the municipality. The service will be operational from now until July 31, at which time the company will consider whether the service needs to be provided during the month of August. During this period, the company will operate three lines of public transport. Line 1 runs through the town of Estepona on a circular route; Line 2 leaves the port and reaches the Mar y Monte urbanization in Isdabe and finally, line 3 will set off from the bus station and reach the Bermuda Beach development, in the Buenas Noches area. Expanding the coverage of this service will cover the demand in summer for access to the area of housing estates and hotels

in the western part of the municipality. The timetable for the third line will be every hour from 9 am to 2 pm and from 5 pm to 7 pm from Monday to Sunday. The price of tickets for lines covering the urbanisations will be 1.40 euros from Bermuda Beach to the Palacio de Congresos and 1.10 euros from the H10 Hotel to the Palacio de Congresos. Meanwhile, the circular line that runs through the town center will be 1.10 euros and 0.60 if a token is used. Tokens are available for retirees bringing the cost down to 0.50 euros. All the buses are adapted for people with reduced mobility and have sitting and standing places. The town hall resumed the commissioning of the urban bus service in 2012, after the previous concessionaire stopped providing it due to the former government team’s failure to make payments.

THE PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW WHEN CLAIMING AN INHERITANCE IN SPAIN In this article we explain the procedures to follow when handling an inheritance in Spain. However, it is important to note that this is only a summary of the salient points, and to ensure the correct procedure is followed the intervention of a specialized attorney is necessary. 1. First it is essential to obtain the death certificate from the country where the person died. In the case of foreigners who have died in their country of origin and have assets in Spain the Death Certificate would be obtained there and then should be translated into Spanish and an “Apostille” (an official stamp), should be acquired to make it valid for use in Spain. Without this document, which is the only official proof of death, the heirs will not be able to process the inheritance. 2. Secondly, after 15 working days from the death (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and holidays), The Certificate of Wills and, where necessary, The Contracts and Insurance certificate must be acquired. The first is necessary to confirm whether or not a will has been signed by the deceased, and the second as proof of any insurance contracts that provide compensation for the death. In order to obtain these certificates it would be necessary to present the Death Certificate, fill out an official application form and provide proof of payment of the fee (currently 3.60€ for each certificate). These certificates are issued on the spot. 3. Get a certified copy of the will. Once you have found out which Notary signed the Last Will and Testament of the deceased you would need to apply for a Certified Copy of the will from that Notary This can only be applied for by a person directly mentioned in the document, (an heir or legatee), or with a Power of Attorney, by a legal representative of any interested party. 4. Make an inventory of assets and debts to inherit. The next step is to locate all assets held by the deceased in Spain and collect all documentation relating thereto. These assets must be valued later in order distribute them as requested by the deceased and then for tax purposes. 5. Signature of award deed of inheritance. This is done in writing naming who are the heirs, specifying the inventory of assets and debts, and listing what is awarded to each heir. 6. Payment of taxes. There are two tax liabilities if a property is part of the inheritance: a. Inheritance Tax. (We detailed the amounts payable and the reductions in a previous article) other article). b. The tax increase in value of urban land known as “municipal capital gain”(Plus Valia) Both taxes should be paid within 6 months from the date of death. In addition to the aforementioned costs inheritance also generates notary fees and registration fees which are highly variable since they depend on many factors such as the number of documents or the amount of goods and their value. To this you should add Lawyers fees, as this complicated procedure would definitely require the assistance of a qualified professional. ha consolidado como el principal foco de atracción.

so it has been decided to improve attention at the point where they have the first contact with the town. The town centre Tourist Office will, from now on, house the staff from the Estepona Port office, so that users will be better served when requesting information or assistance. Another reason to centralize this service in the Plaza de Las Flores is due to its location in the historical centre, close to other places of interest such as the Orchid House, Botanica Park, La Rada Beach and various works on the Poetry Route and the Route of Artistic murals.

If it’s summer it’s Chiringuito Time Nothing typifies the Spanish summer on the Costa del Sol more than a visit to one of the many beach bar/restaurants, chiringuitos, to be found along the coast. Manilva’s beaches have no shortage of these traditional hostelries, ranging from the distinctly rustic to the more upmarket and everything in between. There is nothing quite like sitting on the terrace gazing across the beautiful sands to the shimmering Mediterranean listening to live music or just the sound of the waves lapping on the sure, with the smell of wonderful fresh seafood wafting from the barbecue, and a nice cold drink to set it all off. Many purists have objected to the

Coastal Ministry’s recent edicts requiring all chiringuitos be moved to the edge of the beaches and the previous ramshackle constructions have been demolished to make way for new, more permanent

structures, with a loss of some of the traditional character. The upside to this though is that many chiringuitos have extended their opening season, with some remaining open all-year-round.

It’s all happening on the beach As the focus of daytime activities shifts to the beach during the summer, then it makes sense that dining and entertainment should follow suit, and this is where the chiringuitos come into their own. You can enjoy a good meal of fresh seafood, or just sit back with a cool drink, relax and watch the world go by, often cooled by a pleasant sea breeze providing relief from the summer heat. Many chiringuitos provide entertainment, whether a DJ playing the latest funky sounds, a live band playing some of your favourite songs, flamenco dancing, or just some pleasant background music, there is something for everyone down at the beach bar. This month sees the celebration of Virgen del Carmen, the annual

celebration by the local fishermen of their patron saint. The festivities are held in Sabinillas and Castillo with religious services

followed by processions and finally live music in both Sabinillas and Castillo going on into the early hours of the morning.

Rock Hard Caddie

The Rise and Fall of Cal Capone Cal Capone, the name by which Calum McGregor became known in his wilder days in Cape Town South Africa, was a name that stuck with him as he travelled the world, from Greece to Denmark and the United Kingdom, getting involved in numerous business ventures, some legal, others less so. Growing up during apartheid South Africa in a rich suburb in Cape Town to arriving penniless on the streets of Copenhagen. Throughout the book he talks about his constant and sometimes extreme obsession with drugs and alcohol to which he always succumbed, even when his life, both business and personal, was going well. It was this that ensured that his early business successes, together with virtually all his relationships with women, were destined to fail. His substance abuse also played a major role in his seeking jobs that gave an outlet to the aggression that characterised these years resulting in being a witness, if not a participant, in extremely violent events. The constant theme in this book, and indeed in the second in the series, is the important role played by golf in lifting the writer out of despair at pivotal moments. Playing golf demanded a discipline that diverted his attention from the destructive

hedonism which characterised his daily life and without this diversion, the downward trajectory of his life would no doubt have continued unabated with potentially devastating consequences for him and those around him. The second book in the series, Pharmaceuticals to Fairways, deals with the later period where he desperately seeks to recover from his drug and alcohol dependency, together with the attendant periods of deep, often suicidal periods of depression. It will serve as an inspiration to those who are, or have been, on the same journey from despair, showing that even at the darkest times, circumstances, and more importantly individuals, can help turn things around ending in a series of events that could not have been imagined only a few years previously. Calum is now The Resident's sports correspondent. See pages 43 to 47 in this issue.

Homage to Al-Andalus: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain by Michael B. Barry

The Iberian Peninsula was conquered by Islamic forces in 711 AD and the Islamic presence continued in this part of Europe for 900 years. This presence left an indelible stamp in Spain and Portugal, like the wonders of the Alhambra and the Great Mosque of Córdoba. Its legacy also extends to the rich seam of learning, in science, medicine, literature and philosophy that was later transmitted to the rest of Europe. How did all this come about? In this engaging book Michael Barry tells the story of al-Andalus, its rise to splendour and sophistication and its decline. Richly illustrated with outstanding photographs, it shows the achievements of this extraordinary time. Written in an accessible form, this book sets out the fascinating events from the conquest up to the final expulsion of the people of al-Andalus from Spain, a tale which has resonance with events happening today. It is a book which is essential for those interested in history, for those who want to know this absorbing story and for those who wish to travel in Spain and experience the remarkable legacy of alAndalus.’

What is the perfect training plan? People frequently ask me, what is the best diet or which workout do you think will help me lose the most weight? Is it Insanity, Yoga strength, training for a marathon or Crossfit? Is the best diet The Atkins, 5 and 2, the Paleo or turning vegan? In my opinion, The BEST workout or diet is one that you actually follow through with! Even with the best coach, a great training plan, a specific dietary plan, if you don’t stick with it then it is destined to fail. There are no short cuts to a healthier, leaner, stronger, fitter body. Most programs require the minimum of a 60 day commitment, if that was is needed, then commit to 60 days, if you can’t commit then the chances are no matter how good the diet or program , it will be destined to fail. I love intensity based workouts, I am very time conscious and believe that you can deliver a pretty comprehensive workout, which will grow muscle, burn off fat and improve your CV without spending hours in the gym. BUT I am not saying it’s the only way to train. I always ask the question, how do you want to look naked? The aesthetic body of a long distance runner will be different from a body builder, much the same a ballet dancer to a tennis player. Not only will they look different, but their training plan will be different too and so will their eating plan, so how committed are you to changing how you look? The bigger the commitment the bigger the changes will be. Over the last 25 years I have helped many people achieve

their fitness and lifestyle goals; the main reason for their success is down to goal setting. By helping them set realistic goals, whether it is run half a marathon, perfect 10 strict pull ups or to lose 5k of fat – for their goals to be achieved I believe that they should ask themselves to remember these statements.

Happiness

Enjoy whatever training you do, be happy with your food choices and wake up with a smile on your face each day. If you are unhappy ask yourself why? Are you cheating on the program, have you set your goals to high? Are you trying too hard? Evaluate and make changes accordingly, just don’t quit.

Healthy

Aim not to pre-age your body, either by eating/drinking crap, under training or even over training; be responsible for what you eat and what you do. Aim for your GP to give you a clean bill of health on every check-up. Tweaking your program may be necessary to make it the perfect one for you but for certain giving up completely will never work. Feel great and look good naked Be comfortable in your own skin, have confidence and don’t hold a negative opinion of yourself, Ask yourself, Am I looking better, Am I feeling better, Am I happy? If so, Well done and keep at it! If not, learn where things went wrong, take these lessons and make an informed lesson to move forward. Most decent programs will produce positive results if you stick at it, don’t give up at the first challenging hurdle.

The A-Z of Knee Pain - Part Two Introduction

Following on from last month’s article, Bodyworks Health Clinic presents the second of the two-part A to Z of Knee Pain. We think you’ll find it both interesting and useful. The knee is the largest joint in the body and one of the most complex, making it a very vulnerable joint! It is made up of 4 bones, more than 20 muscles each with a tendon, 4 major ligaments as well as many little ones, and at least 3 layers of cartilage.

Orthotics

Modern computerised corrective insoles are slim and discreet enough to fit in everyday shoes and are a major tool to prevent knee problems.

Physical Therapy

American research shows that exercise significantly improves movement and reduces pain in the knee. The 1st muscle to lose strength in any knee problem is the quadriceps so focus on these. Exercise is not easy at first but get advice and persevere! Stretch and strengthen!

Q Angle Correction:

The angle formed by your thighbone and shinbone through the knee cap when viewed from the front. If you are knockkneed or bandy-legged this angle is wrong, putting extra pressure on the knee. The right shoes and arch supports can reduce the risk of joint damage.

Referred Pain

X-rays

Supports

Yucca

Getting an accurate diagnosis is critically important! Pain in the knee can be referred from the hip or the feet and without an accurate diagnosis, treatment is a waste of time as you are not treating the true cause of the problem. Are not all created equal! It is important to get the right one for your knee problem and the activity you want to do. New specialized techniques using tape are most effective. Elastic supports stifle the circulation and restrict movement.

Tissue Engineering

Or stem cell regeneration. This is a new surgery technique which implants cartilage from elsewhere aiming to stimulate cartilage re-growth but has mixed results to date.

And other investigations can give you a clearer idea of how advanced the problem is. Always make sure you get the right investigation for your problem, this should follow a detailed clinical assessment. Possible anti-inflammatory, as well as, a steroid effect on pain and potentially beneficial effects on bone density.

Zinc

Helps trigger the growth of new cells to replace damaged tissue.

Ultrasound

Used by physiotherapists, this therapy uses sound waves to reach deep tissues and increase blood flow, relax muscles and aid healing.

Viscosupplementation

Injections of hyaluronate into the joint to lubricate it but not cure it. The injection can be painful and only offers short term pain relief.

Water

Exercising in your swimming pool takes the weight off your knees. Over and over again research shows that exercise can reduce knee pain, and is an important MUST!

To The Sea with your dog: pet friendly beaches this summer Spain is one of the European countries with fewer beaches open to dogs. In this country we find different types of beaches: beaches that officially allow access of dogs without any restriction, which are authorized after primary bathing hours and are only approved outside the bathing season (from October to May ), which are the vast majority. However, more and more provinces in favour of tourism will allow canine visitors that are accepted to their shores. In Andalusia Unlike other communities, in Andalusia, they have decreased the number of beaches that allow access to pets. The Andalusian Government banned, in June 2015, the entry of dogs to its shores in the bathing season, which runs from June 1 to September 30. Still, there are some open coasts where one can go with your beloved pet. In Malaga you will find the beach of Arroyo Totalán, although its waters are unfortunately not suitable for swimming, and the Playa del Castillo, (in the part belonging to Fuengirola) where dogs are allowed. In Almeria, there is Playa de la Rana

(Frog Beach), which is expected to be enabled for pets this summer and, thus, become the first official dog beach of Almeria province. Malaga is complicated because the only beach, 650 meters wide, the Arroyo Totalán, has been granted permission from the Department of the Environment to allow dogs without any problems - Fuengirola has a canine permitted area, granted by the town council but the Andalusian Governmenthas not given its permission More than 450,000 dogs in the province have found it difficult this year to take a dip. The Costa del Sol opens its doors to tourists from anywhere in the world but has little room for pets and their neighbors throughout the year to bathe in the waters of Malaga. The city only has a beach-dog enabled in Totalán Arroyo, between Malaga and Rincon de la Victoria. The other beaches that may be in other municipalities and claiming to be suitable for dogs do not have the necessary permits, according to reports from the Department of the Environment. This is the case Beach Sohail Castle in Fuengirola.

The National Police remind people that it is forbidden to shut dogs in vehicles With the arrival of high temperatures, the National Police again remind all that the campaign to prevent dogs from being locked in cars in their owner’s absence. Indeed, Article 337 establishes the abuse unjustifiably of a pet, domestic or tamed animal causing it’s death or injury which severely damages it’s health, shall be punished with imprisonment from three months to one year and one’s disqualification of up to three years for the exercise of a profession, trade or business that is related to animals. The National Police Corps emphasize that to leave a dog (or other animal) in a car in summer, risking its life, can be considered a criminal offense, they do not only mention sanctioning a heavy fine, which can reach 30,000 Euros, but also of a possible jail term. Keep in mind that the mistreatment of animals is sanctioned and penalised by the legislations of the different autonomous communities. In Andalusia, for example, abandonment and abuse carries fines of between 2,001 and 30,000 Euros. Less serious offenses have penalties of between 501 and 2,000 Euros and minor offenses of between 75-500 Euros. Also in summer one must exercise extreme caution with dogs that have special characteristics because of their breed and therefore it becomes

even more dangerous to leave them locked in the car. That is for example, brachycephalic breeds, they are more fragile due to their shortened skull, like the Bulldogs, Boxers, Pugs or Pekinese have more difficulty in regulating their temperature and are hypersensitive to heat stroke; as well as the Nordic breeds, Huskies, Malamutes, Samoyeds and St. Bernards, among others, who suffer greatly in hot days because they were bred to live in the snow. The National Police wish to remind you that you should never leave an animal in a space as small as the trunk, with little oxygen or any air current or ventilation. For pet transport carriers, many are made of plastic or plastic fabrics that do not transpire and concentrate the heat even more. If, in addition to being in the car, the dog is put in its carrier, the temperature increases even more. The heat from the dog goes into the transport carrier concentrating it even more and further aggravating the situation. Without regard to the particular breed characteristics, keep in mind that both puppies and older dogs are more sensitive and fragile than adults and young dogs, so you have to take special care.

The Gecko on the Wall

The Resident Sports Pages brought to you courtesy of

The world of golf through the eyes of Calum McGregor Being an ex-sportsman who writes books for personal amusement, what do you think I said when I was offered the opportunity to write this section? Golf has always been the sport that has entertained me since my childhood. I remember having lessons from Gary Player when I was no taller than a three wood. I walked the fairway with my one of my heroes Nick Faldo and his caddie Fanny. I grew up on Westlake Golf course in South Africa where my father was on the committee and the local caddies were my day-care during school holidays. When I finished practising I would sit in the members lounge and read every golf magazine inside and out. I have always loved golf but recently I have become emotionally involved in Spanish golf. During the last few years of my life, while living here in the sun soaked Costa del Sol, I have written two books about my love of golf. Those books opened doors and gave

me the opportunity to work as a commentator on a professional golf tour - the only professional golf tour in Spain at the time. Watching the young locals and the foreign professionals who have come to Spain to practice and compete over the last couple of seasons I got to see the moments of glory that went unseen by the rest of the world. I witnessed moments like the professional debut of Javier Ballesteros, the son of my all-time golfing hero. I was there to see a Local amateur golfer Mario Galiano from La Cañada Golf Club have back to back victories on The Gecko Tour before playing at The Spanish Open. Jordi Garcia Del Moral from Estepona won the Gecko Tour Order of Merit season 2014/15. He caddied for his good friend Sergio Garcia at The Spanish Open before competing himself at The Open de Madrid. I was fortunate enough to be at the Madrid Open, caddying for my good friend Anton Karlsson and although we finished in 22nd

position it was a great victory for another friend of mine Duncan Stewart who a few weeks earlier was practising at La Reserva G C. I have even watched as a young English golfer (who won his first professional event at Doña Julia GC four years ago) go on to become the first golfer who will journey into space, hence his newly christened nickname “Spaceman Sullivan”. Needless to say I have become friends with many of the professionals that are considered locals in our region of Spain. Over the last few years I have seen the heartache that some of the players have had to endure and the others that have climbed the ranks. As a sign of support I follow the scores from every tour - I send messages of congratulations after a good round played or alternatively messages of commiseration for cuts missed to any of the golfers who live or practice on the Costa del Sol. When one of my players wins the Spanish Professionals Open

tournament it is as big and as important news to me as who won the last major. Caddying for one of my players is more exhilarating and exciting for me than walking the fairways with Sergio Garcia and Marten Kaymer at the Spanish Open in Valderrama GC. Sporting successes mean so much more when you have an emotional involvement. When one of your friends or one of the people that live in our area does well on the international stage I think that is bigger news than if Rory Mclroy wins a tournament. Having said that, Rory’s father actually frequents our area and drinks in Duquesa port. What I am going to do for the people reading this section is what I have been doing for the last few years. I will try and introduce the readers to all the local pros that train and practice at your local golf courses and I hope that you will also grow an emotional bond to the local sportsmen that are struggling and fighting to make it in the world

of golf. Like a Gecko on the wall I watch my friends. I will stand back from the cruel roundabout of professional golf and witness her torturous ways. Not only will I write about the highs of international golf but I will also try and highlight what I think and hopefully our local residents and readers will think are great achievements. Welcome to the first edition of The Gecko on The Clubhouse Wall. I look forward to all of us getting to know each other.

Dustin Johnson wins the US Open

D

ustin Johnson conquered Oakmont Country Club with a fantastic fourth round in the midst of controversy and confusion. With the first days play suspended due to inclement weather conditions the players completed their four rounds in three days of sunrise to sunset golf. Johnson was in the middle of a brewing storm for most of the back nine on his final round. The USGA officials approached him on the 12th tee box about a review of his putt back on the fifth green in which the ball moved as he was in the process of addressing the ball. The USGA officials told him that after he finished his round they would review the decision. All the other players in the field were also informed that there was a possibility of a penalty shot causing confusion amongst the players, The look of uncertainty was evident on most of the golfer faces and created one of the more surreal scenarios at a championship event in modern sports history: No one could be sure what the score was. The Sky Sports commentary team were outraged as were other players. The issue in question was whether or not Johnson caused his ball to move before sinking a six-foot par putt. A day earlier, Lowry had called a one-stroke penalty on himself when

his ball moved slightly after he addressed it before a putt on the 16th green. But after immediately alerting a rules official to the movement of his ball, Johnson said he did not cause the movement. The issue seemed to be resolved until Hall, the USGA’s managing director of rules and competition, approached Johnson and appeared on the Fox broadcast to explain the situation minutes later. Hall indicated the USGA would assess a one-stroke penalty, but wouldn’t say for sure. “We have some concerns,” he said. “We wanted to put Dustin on notice.” The combination of those comments, the indecision by the USGA and Hall approaching Johnson about it in the middle of his round sparked a wave of outcry on social media from fans and other players alike. Rory McIlroy, who had left the tournament after missing the cut, wrote on Twitter: “This is ridiculous. No penalty whatsoever for DJ. Let the guy play without this crap in his head. Amateur hour from (USGA).” Jordan Spieth, who finished at 9 over par, wrote: “This is a joke.” Even 76-year-old golf legend Jack Nicklaus weighed in, arguing with USGA executive director Mike Davis before the trophy ceremony near the 18th green. “They have to either give him the penalty or not,” Nicklaus said. A birdie by Johnson on the ninth hole and a bogey by Lowry on the same hole minutes later put Johnson alone in the lead by one stroke – or tied for the lead, as it turned out. When Lowry missed a 7-foot par putt on No. 10, the lead grew to two – or one, in retrospect. Despite facing a potential one-stroke penalty, Johnson kept a cool demeanour and secured his first major championship. Europe had a strong contingent of players vying for the top spot going into the final round. Shane Lowry from Ireland, managed a well fought and very respectful tied second place at -1

Sergio Garcia did himself proud, still in pursuit of his first long overdue major he tied fifth with my fellow countryman Branden Grace at level par. Garcia was up as high as three under before three straight bogey’s starting at the 14th hole put an end to his charge. Despite all the drama surrounding the ruling the tournament lived up to the expectation. The US Open is designed for someone to win it and Dustin did, fair and square.

Hump Day Hackers

Anton Karlsson

Anton Karlsson, otherwise known as “The Silent Assassin” is a 22 year old from Upsalla Sweden but since turning Professional a few years ago he has based himself in Alcaidesa. Training at our local courses and competing on The Gecko Tour during the winters, Anton has become a regular face in our area. Anton is playing his rookie season on The European Challenge Tour and is already making a name for himself. Last week he had his best European Challenge Tour finish at the Scottish Hydro Open in Aviemore Scotland, claiming his maiden tour hole in one on the first day. Unable to be there as his

A drinking society with a golfing problem

caddie we spoke the night after he made the cut. We agreed that he needed to go on a run, a run of birdies like he did at the Madrid Open to make the cut. The following day Anton responded in style. Making the turn in 29 strokes he ended up equalling the

course record before going on to claim his first ever top ten finish on The Challenge Tour. Unassuming and quiet most of the time now you will see why I call him “The Silent Assassin” Anton is destined to be a household name in the future.

The Costa connection to Spanish Olympic golf A historic meeting recently took place at La Reserva de Sotogrande with Manuel Pinero the Captain of the Spanish men’s Olympic golf team. Manuel Pinero was the winner of two World Cups (also including one as the leading individual), the 1985 Ryder Cup, nine European Tour titles and five Spanish Championships. He is an icon of Spanish and international golf. Manuel recently moved to Sotogrande too become part of a major project. The goal of Mr Pinero is to transform La Reserva, one of our most prestigious golf clubs, into one of the most prestigious and exclusive Golf Clubs in Europe. George O’Grady, President of International Relations of the European Tour, José María Olazábal, Sergio García, José María Cañizares as well as the captains of the teams of Belgium, Philippe Relecom; Portugal, Joao Coutinho; Italy, Gianlua Crespi and Denmark, Claus Moelholm attended the meeting to highlight the “crucial “importance of Olympic Golf. “It will be a historic turning point that will enable us to reach new generations of golfers and countries which are unthinkable right now”, said Olazábal. Special mention was made of Severiano Ballesteros, “who did more than anyone else for European Golf,” said Piñero. “The Spanish team will carry Seve’s image on their equipment, “We want to make it very clear that we are there representing him,” he added. “In Spain we must never forget the likes of the Miguel brothers, Ángel and Sebastián or Ramón Sota and, of course, Severiano Ballesteros, who did more than anyone else for European golf.“Seve is the real Captain, for his spirit and for his understanding of golf. Sergio

and I agree that we will carry his image on our uniform, as we want to make it clear that we are there representing him. “As well as Seve, we have Olazábal with us, his eternal friend and team partner. I am here replacing the replacement, and I told José María that I will step back and hand him the captaincy should his health improve in the next few months. I also want to thank Sergio García, who represents the new generation of golfers that are raising our sport to increasingly higher levels. “I have told the players to prepare for the Olympics the same as they would for a Major – they know what to do. From the opening ceremony on August 5th to the start of golf on the 11th, we will have plenty of time to study the course. I know that the players have to carry their sponsors’ marks but I would like them to wear the same colours, and, as I said, Seve will be present on their equipment.” I have been fortunate enough to become friends with Mr Pinero and I have witnessed the changes that have been made at La Reserva GC over the last few years. La Reserva has a special place in my heart. It is ranked in my Top 3 golf courses in the world and also holds fond memories for me. I caddied during the NH collection Open, hosted and commentated for the Gecko Tour

at their tour championship final and and The Ernie Els for Autism Charity golf day there a few years ago. Most recently I was working at La Reserva during the MENA Tour’s Sotogrande Masters. With Mr Pinero’s input I have witnessed the clubhouse transform into what can only be described as a palace fit for a king. The golf course is in world class condition all year round with shiny white marble sand bunkers glistening on the velvet carpet like fairways. Not a hair is out of place on this majestical golf course. I am really pleased to see that the same old friendly faces are still at the “New” La Reserva. Jesus, the friendliest man in the world is still behind the bar with all the amazing catering staff and David and the boys are still driving out to collect your clubs when you park. If anything Mr Pinero’s arrival at La Reserva has made the club feel more alive and awake. I am positive that the vision of Mr Pinero and Sotogrande SA to make La Reserva worthy of hosting a future European event is a foregone conclusion. With Olympics just around the corner and the captain of our Spanish national team also at the help of my favourite golf club in the world, I suspect it should create massive local interest. I will be writing about it anyway.

Some fantastic new improvements taking place at Doña Julia Golf Club

Located in Casares, between Marbella and Sotogrande, Doña Julia Golf Club lies quietly next door to the world famous Finca Cortesin Golf club. A little bit like La Canada GC is to Valderamma GC, Dona Julia GC is perfectly integrated into the natural landscape of the area and is noted for its magnificent views over the Mediterranean Sea and the African Coast. The course is 18 holes par 71 with a length of 5,976. Designed by renowned Malaga architect Antonio Garcia Garrido Dona Julia GC offers her visitors an affordable golfing experience at a quality venue. Recent improvements see the golf club now boast a new restaurant and bar area, Pro shop, outside BBQ area and some on course improvements. “We have invested a lot of time and

money into the golf course and it is beginning to pay off now. Golfers from across Europe and Scandinavia are booking their return visits and the feedback from the golfers about our improvements has been very rewarding.” Annie Villalba, Marketing Manager and local resident took great pride in showing me the improvements. “We have also taken delivery of fifty new electric buggies to cope with the increase in the numbers of players that are booking with us and our new BBQ area has proved so popular that we are running a BBQ special at the moment that is great value.” With the new and improved clubhouse and the golf course in immaculate condition, Dona Julia GC is a must play venue for any local and visiting golfer to our area.

An introduction to Estepona Golf Club risk sometimes rewards. Taking extra club is required when facing the challenging uphill shots to some long par 3s like the beautiful 14th hole and its Sierra Bermeja Mountain range backdrop. The greens at Estepona are true. Many double level greens will punish an inaccurate shot but the large flat areas on most with nice rolling surfaces allow for some very close long putts. At the end of the day Estepona GC offers every golfer what they are after. A nice relaxing day of golf on a testing but fair course. Friendly and polite staff always ensuring you leave with a smile on your face.

Estepona golf course is located at the newly built “Ant” roundabout on the border of Casares and Estepona. Being five minutes’ drive from where I live, it was one of the first golf courses I visited when I arrived in Spain. Nestled in the peaceful undulating Spanish countryside, Estepona GC is not your typical Spanish golf course. When you drive into the clubhouse you could easily be driving into the luxurious mansion of a wealthy friend. The friendly staff normally always stand at the open entrance to greet you hello. I remember when I played Estepona GC for the first time, I loved the layout of the course but it really needed some TLC. The course was looking a little tired and looked like she could have done with some attention. I am pleased to see that over the last few years a significant amount of investment and attention has been given to Estepona and with the constant upgrades and improvement I look forward to see how the club will flourish in the future. Estepona GC caters for all players. For an annual fee of €199 you can purchase a members card that entitles you to half price golf. An all year round green fee of €45 means all year around affordable golf. With relaxed and friendly bar and restaurant staff staying for a beer or two after your round is hard to resist. The golf course itself was designed by Jose Luis Lopez Martinez and opened in 1991 by its proud owner Rory Leader. At only 5893 meters it is a relatively short par 72 but still a challenge for any level of golfer. Short downhill par 4s tempt you to go for the green with your drives where
