Editorial Bienvenidos al número de noviembre de The Resident. Bueno, ahora que los relojes se han atrasado una hora, ya parece invierno un poco más, aunque tenemos la suerte de que la palabra invierno no es tan temida aquí en la Costa del Sol. Por supuesto, tan pronto como llega noviembre, muchos empiezan a pensar en las Navidades, y por eso hemos comenzado ha incluir detalles sobre algunos eventos y ofertas disponibles para este periodo festivo.

Además, con la Navidad a la vuelta de la esquina, también debemos pensar en los menos afortunados. La Duquesa Charitable Society of Saint George ha comenzado su campaña de recogida de regalos navideños para los niños menos afortunados de Manilva, Casares y Estepona. En las páginas de la Organización Benéfica Saint George de esta edición podrás encontrar más información sobre esta campaña y leer sobre los últimos trabajos realizados por la organización estas últimas semanas.

Los residentes de Manilva probablemente conozcan la agitación política que se ha vivido en el Ayuntamiento, sobre la que han habido muchos rumores y conjeturas. He esperado deliberadamente para hablar sobre este tema hasta que la situación se resolviera, ya que la información probablemente daría pie a más preguntas que respuestas, ya que la situación ha ido cambiando día tras día. Todo se resolverá, a menos que haya una invasión alienígena, se extinga la raza humana o se produzcan más jueguecitos políticos, el viernes 11 de noviembre, tras lo cual escribiremos un informe completo.

Hablando de política, estamos viviendo tiempos muy interesantes como dijeron o no los chinos. España por fin tiene un gobierno tras 10 meses y dos elecciones, aunque será difícil que puedan aprobarse leyes más controvertidas que decidir qué vino se servirá en la fiesta de Navidad en las Cortes. Aunque eso no es del todo malo sin pensamos en la ley mordaza. Al cierre de esta edición, aún no sabemos si el principal líder del mundo libre será una estrella de los realities de televisión con un peinado raro o Hillary “no soy una mentirosa, simplemente económica con la verdad” Clinton. Mientras en Reino Unido quizá tengamos pronto elecciones generales, aunque los que desean quedarse en la UE no deben emocionarse mucho, ya que eso requeriría que ganara el líder del Partido Laborista Jeremy Corbyn.

Realmente vivimos unos tiempos interesantes.

Welcome to the November issue of The Resident. Well now that the clocks have gone back, it’s beginning to feel like winter, although we are fortunate that the word winter doesn’t hold the same kind of dread here on the Costa as it does for those in points further North.

Of course as soon as November arrives many people turn their thoughts to Christmas, and to that end we have started to include details of some of the events and offers available over the festive period.

Also with Christmas fast approaching we should also turn our thoughts to those less fortunate. The Duquesa Charitable Society of Saint George has launched its annual Christmas Gift Appeal, raising money to provide gift bags to disadvantaged children in Manilva, Casares and Estepona, information about which you can read on the Saint George Charity pages in this edition, where you can also read about the latest work this local charity has been engaged in over the past weeks.

Residents of Manilva will most probably be aware of the upheaval in the local Council, about which there has been much rumour and conjecture. I have deliberately delayed publishing anything until the situation has been resolved, as the information would probably lead to more questions than answers, and the situation changing on a dayto-day basis. All will be settled, barring alien invasion, global extinction events, or more political shenanigans, by Friday 11 November after which I will provide a full report in next month’s paper.

Talking of politics, we are living in interesting times as the Chinese may or may not have said. Spain finally has a government after 10 months and two elections, albeit a lame duck one which will not be able to pass any laws more controversial than which wine to serve at the Cortes Christmas party, mind you not a bad thing thinking back to the gag law. As we go to press we are yet to learn whether the leader of the free world will be a reality tv star with a dodgy comb-over, or Hillary ‘I’m not a liar, merely economical with the truth’ Clinton. Whilst back in the UK a snap general election could be on the cards, but don’t get excited all of you who wish to remain in the EU as that would require a win by Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party. We do indeed live in interesting times.

HIPOTECA EN ESPAÑA - ¿CÓMO CONSEGUIR UNA HIPOTECA Y SALIR ILESO EN EL INTENTO? Todo aquél que se encuentra en la situación de solicitar una hipoteca ante un banco español, se habrá hecho una serie de preguntas: ¿Qué cantidad puedo pedir? ¿Cuáles son los pasos a dar? ¿Cuáles son los requisitos?

perfil del cliente así como del tipo de propiedad que quiera comprar ya que si hablamos de activos bancarios, estas cifras pueden incrementarse considerablemente pudiendo llegar al 95-100% del valor de compra.

En este artículo trataremos de dar respuesta a todas estas cuestiones de manera que aquella persona que esté solicitando actualmente una hipoteca o lo vaya a hacer en un futuro cercano, sepa que hacer.

Una vez que sepamos qué cantidad vamos a solicitar, el siguiente paso será contactar con el banco a fin de que éste estudie la operación y la viabilidad de la misma. En este artículo nos gustaría enumerar los requisitos y documentación necesaria para solicitar una hipoteca ante cualquier de los bancos que operan en el territorio español.

Primeramente, tenemos que tener claro cuánto dinero podemos solicitar al banco.

Por regla general está puede varíar dependiendo de si hablamos de RESIDENTES o NO RESIDENTES. Por regla general para aquellas personas que son residentes fiscales, el tope estaría en el 80% del valor de compra o de tasación (el menor de los dos valores). Por el contrario, para los no residentes la cantidad máxima a solicitar es del 65-70%. Estas cifras pueden variar dependiendo del

1. Si es un trabajador por cuenta ajena: • Formulario P60.

• Las tres últimas nóminas • La última declaración de la renta (“Tax Return”) • Carta de recomendación del empleador • Cualquier otros ingreso

2. Si eres un trabajador por cuenta propia: • Última declaración de la renta (“Tax Return”) • Últimas 3 nóminas.

• Extracto de la cuenta de los últimos 2 años.

• Prueba de otros ingresos.

Junto con la documentación arriba mencionada, habría que incluir también documentación relativa a la vivienda que vamos a comprar, tal como: nota simple, recibo de IBI, copia de la escritura de compraventa, contracto privado de compraventa, etc…

Una vez que el banco ha analizado la documentación facilitada por el solicitante, dará su veredicto sobre la viabilidad o no de la operación. En el caso de que ésta sea positiva, el siguiente paso será la tasación de la vivienda que vayamos a comprar.

Con la tasación en la mano, el banco emitirá la “oferta vinculante” la cual es un documento definitivo que la entidad financiera debe entregar una vez que se ha solicitado formalmente la hipoteca y que contiene todos los puntos a firmar en la escritura del préstamo hipotecario, incluyendo todas las cláusulas negociadas con el cliente.

Por último, ya solo quedaría fijar una fecha en notaría y firmar la escritura pública de compraventa entre vendedor y comprador así con el banco para formalizar la escritura de constitución de hipoteca.

THE HASSLE FREE WAY TO GET A SPANISH MORTGAGE Anyone who is in the position of applying for a mortgage with a Spanish bank would have certain questions: i.e. How much can I borrow? How do I go about it? What do I need?

This article will attempt to answer all of these questions so that anyone who is currently applying for a mortgage, or perhaps contemplating doing so, will know what is required.

Firstly, the amount of money that you can ask for must be established.

Generally this varies depending on whether we are talking about tax residents or non tax residents. As a general rule for those who are tax residents, the limit would be 80% of the purchase price or of the banks valuation of the property, (the lower of the two values is the one used for the calculations). On the other hand, for non-tax residents the maximum amount would be 65-70% of the lowest valuation.

These figures can still vary depending on the circumstances of each individual and on the type of property being purchased which could possibly cause these percentages to increase considerably to reach even 95-100% of the purchase value.

Once we have established how much we can borrow, the next step is to contact the bank so that it can study the viability of the operation.

Following we have included a list of the requirements and documentation necessary to apply for a mortgage from any of the banks operating in the Spain 1. If you are employed: • Form P60 • The last three pay slips • The last statement of income (Tax Return”) • Letter of recommendation from employer • Proof of any other income 2. If you are a self-employed: • Last income tax (“Tax Return”) • Last 3 pay slips • Extract from the business accounts for the last 2 years • Proof of any other income.

Along with the above documentation, you should also include copies of any documentation relating to the property that you wish to purchase such as: “Nota Simple” (from the local property Registry), IBI receipt (the rates receipt from the Town Hall), Property deed, private contract of sale, etc...

Once the bank has analyzed all of the above documents provided by the applicant, it will give its verdict as to the feasibility, or otherwise, of the operation. In the event that the result is positive, the next step would be for the bank to arrange a valuation of the property in question.

When the bank has the valuation it can then issue the final official mortgage offer called the “Oferta Vinculante”. This is a document supplied by the bank detailing the amount of the mortgage and it would include any conditions that have been negotiated beforehand.

Finally, a mutually agreeable time and date would be arranged for all parties to meet at a Notary to sign the Deed of Sale between vendor and buyer, and at the same time to sign the Mortgage Deed with the bank.

El Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz concluye con un éxito de público

“Techo y Comida” se hizo con el “Pajarraco de plata” a la mejor película, Jesús Ponce recibió el premio al mejor director por “Todo saldrá bien” y “Kiki, el amor se hace”, consiguió el galardón del público.

E

l director de "Techo y Comida" explicó que la obra "habla de la gente que lo está pasando mal en España" y pidió "techo y comida para todos”.

Ponce, por su parte, señaló que cuando se hizo la película muchas críticas dijeron que era "humanista y necesaria" y animó a los espectadores a que vayan más al cine porque "un pueblo que va al cine es un pueblo culto y un pueblo libre".

El director del festival, Javier Martos, hizo un balance positivo del evento y se mostró "muy satisfecho" con los resultado, ya que, según explicó, han conseguido el objetivo que perseguían que era "crear sinergias entre la gente que expone sus obras, los espectadores y los

vecinos del pueblo".

Uno de los aspectos más destacados de esta edición ha sido el notable aumento de público, el aforo del centro cultural ha estado prácticamente completo tanto en las proyecciones diarias como en la gala de clausura.

En el acto de cierre la concejala de Cultura, Rocío Ruiz, destacó la consolidación de este evento que sitúa a Casares como capital del cine andaluz y reiteró el compromiso del Ayuntamiento de mantener su apoyo en los años venideros.

La gala de clausura, conducida por Santiago Ruiz, contó con un espectáculo musical de “La Pili” que animó al público interpretando los canciones más conocidas del cine andaluz.

Uno de los momentos más emotivos de la noche se vivió cuando la artista sacó al escenario a María, una de las casareñas protagonistas del Spot publicitario del festival, a la que rindió un bonito homenaje.

Además, esta tercera edición del Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz entregó por primera vez el premio "Cámara Oscura", que reconoce la labor de los jóvenes creadores que elaboran sus obras con pocos recursos, un galardón que recibió el director y productor David Sainz.

Sainz agradeció el galardón y comentó que este festival destaca porque "crea un sentimiento familiar que no se ve en otros eventos de este tipo".

Por otro lado, en el Concurso

de Cortos Exprés que se celebra enmarcado en el festival y en el que los participantes tienen que elaborar un cortometraje en el municipio en un fin de semana, el primer premio fue para "Un día fuimos jaguares" de Víctor Hugo Pérez y el segundo para "El Becario" de los casareños Víctor Jerez y David García, que además recibieron el premio del público.

Englobado en el evento se ha celebrado por primera vez un concurso de fotografía cinematográfica para fotógrafos andaluces que ha entregado dos premios exaequo para las obras "El misterioso caso de la manzana" y "La chica de la

bicicleta".

En el apartado de formación del festival se ha celebrado un taller de creación de webseries impartido por David Sainz y Teresa Segura, los directores de "Malviviendo", la webserie más exitosa de España que acumula más de 86 millones de visitas en Youtube.

En la sección oficial de largometrajes competían en esta tercera edición cinco películas con sello andaluz "Todo saldrá bien" de Jesús Ponce, "Maldita Venganza" de Jesús Chamizo, "Techo y Comida" de Juan Miguel del Castillo, "Kiki" de Paco León y "Todo es de color" de Gonzalo García Pelayo.

he director of "Techo y Comida" explained that the work "speaks of people that are having a hard time in Spain" and called for "shelter and food for everyone."

Ponce, meanwhile, said that when the film was made many critics said it was "humanist and necessary" and encouraged viewers to go to the movies because "people going to the cinema are a cultured people and a free people ".

Festival director, Javier Martos, made a positive assessment of the

event and was "very satisfied" with the result because, he explained, they have achieved the objective pursued which was to "create synergies between people who exhibit their work, spectators and residents. " One of the highlights of this edition has been the significant increase in audience, the cultural centre was virtually filled to capacity during both the daily projections and the closing ceremony.

In the closing ceremony the

Councilor for Culture, Rocio Ruiz, highlighted the consolidation of this event which makes Casares one of the capitals of Andalucian film and reiterated the Council's commitment to maintain its support for the event over the coming years.

The closing gala, conducted by Santiago Ruiz, featured a musical show "La Pili" which encouraged the audience to join in with the best-known Andalucian songs from films. One of the most emotional moments of the night came when the performer payed homage to Maria, one of the protagonists of the advertising spot for the festival, after asking her up to the stage.

In addition, this third edition of Andalucian New Film Festival for the first time awarded the "Camara

Oscura" award, which recognizes the work of young artists who produce their pieces with few resources, to the director and producer David Sainz.

Sainz gave thanks for the award and said that this festival stands out because it "creates a family feeling that is not seen in other events of this kind."

On the other hand, in the Short Film Competition held as part of the main festival and in which the participants have to produce a short film in the village on a weekend, the first prize went to "Un día fuimos jaguares" by Victor Hugo Perez and the second to "el Becario" by Victor Jerez and David Garcia, who also received the audience award.

Included in the event for the first

time was a contest for Andalusian motion picture photographers with two awards which went to "El misterioso caso de la manzana" and "La chica de la bicicleta" In the training section of the festival there was a web series building workshop taught by David Sainz and Teresa Segura, the directors of "Hustler", the most successful webseries of Spain which has more than 86 million views on Youtube.

In the official selection of films competing in this third edition there were five Andalucian films "Todo saldrá bien" by Jesús Ponce, "Maldita Venganza" by Jesús Chamizo, "Techo y Comida" by Juan Miguel del Castillo, "Kiki" by Paco León and "Todo es de color"

La Concejalía de Turismo recibe las 30 audioguías para información turística

Casares contará con su propia Guía de Setas Con esta Guía de Setas, de la que se editarán 1.000 ejemplares, la Concejalía de Medio Ambiente del Ayuntamiento de Casares pretende contribuir al conocimiento de la naturaleza local.

El cuadernillo contará con una introducción en la que se incluyen recomendaciones y consejos para la recolección de setas, además de diversa bibliografía y enlaces para aplicaciones informáticas.

La publicación se completa con fichas de 20 especies de las

setas más frecuentes del entorno de Casares, de las que 10 son comestibles y otras 10 tóxicas.

Con imágenes de cada una y descripción de las características principales que puedan ser contrastadas con los ejemplares localizados.

Con esta edición, la Concejalía de Medio Ambiente pretende ofrecer a los aficionados una introducción al conocimiento micológico de los montes casareños. Cubriendo la laguna existente en el conocimiento

de las especies más habituales de setas y hongos para evitar accidentes por el consumo de especies tóxicas.

La divulgación de información en este sentido se hacía cada vez más necesaria, pues aunque hasta ahora no existía tradición de uso gastronómico y consiguiente conocimiento de las setas en el término de Casares, en los últimos años se ha generalizado su recogida y consumo tanto por la población local como foránea.

La Concejalía de Turismo ha recibido las 30 audio-guías adquiridas recientemente, que ya tiene grabada información de los lugares de interés del casco histórico de Casares en 4 idiomas: español, inglés, alemán, ruso y francés.

Ahora desde el Ayuntamiento se prepara la normativa que establece el precio y condiciones de préstamos a los usuarios.

Con este nuevo material las oficinas de turismo ofrecen un nuevo servicio a los turistas que podrán realizar por sí mismo una

visita guiada con explicaciones del casco histórico de Casares.

Los usuarios podrán solicitar próximamente estos aparatos en las oficinas de turismo, Casa Natal o Centro Cultural de Blas Infante.

Las audio-guías tendrán grabado información numerada de los lugares de interés del casco histórico de Casares.

El nuevo material turístico ha sido adquirido por el Consistorio con apoyo de una subvención de Mancomunidad de Municipios.

The Department of Tourism receives 30 audio guides for tourist information The Department of Tourism has received 30 newly acquired audio guides, which have pre-recorded information about the historical sites of Casares in 5 languages: Spanish, English, German, Russian and French.

Now the town hall is preparing regulations establishing the price and conditions of loans to users.

With this equipment the tourist offices offer a new service to tourists who can now enjoy their

own guided tour with interesting information on historic sites in Casares.

Users can soon apply for these devices in tourist offices, or the Blas Infante Cultural Centre.

The audio guides have recorded information on a number of historic sights in Casares.

The new tourist material has been acquired by the town hall with a grant from the Association of Municipalities.

With this Mushroom guide, of which 1,000 copies will be published, the Department of Environment of Casares aims to contribute to propagating the knowledge of local nature.

The booklet will feature an introduction with recommendations and tips for collecting mushrooms, plus a bibliography and links to different applications.

The publication will have files on 20 species of the most common mushrooms in Casares’ local environment, of which 10 are edible and 10 others are toxic. With images of each and descriptions of the main features they can be compared to specimens located in the wild.

The Department of Environment intends to offer mushroom aficionados an introduction to mycological knowledge of the casares mountains. Covering the gap in the knowledge of the most common species of mushrooms to

avoid accidental consumption of toxic species.

El Centro Cultural Blas Infante acoge el sábado 3 de diciembre la comedia "No hay burlas con Calderón" La sesión contará con entrada gratuita para lo que desde la Concejalía de Cultura se podrán a disposición de los vecinos las invitaciones unas semanas antes.

Esta comedia es un homenaje a la vida de los cómicos en el Siglo de Oro Español, dónde el público se hace partícipe de los sinsabores y alegrías de este viejo y noble oficio, "El Teatro".

Cuenta las peripecias de una compañía de cómicos del Siglo de Oro que va a representar la obra de Calderón de la Barca "No hay burlas con el Amor" a una villa española. Un infortunado accidente con el carro en el viaje lleva a las primeras actrices y a los primeros actores al hospital...los que están a salvo no son los mejores! Pero son los que quedan y en el TEATRO la función siempre tiene que continuar..

Los Presupuestos Participativos de Casares convocan las asambleas de zona Durante la primera semana de noviembre se llevarán a cabo estos encuentros en los tres núcleos de población para que los vecinos hagan sus propuestas

E

l Pleno Ordinario celebrado la mes pasada en el Ayuntamiento de Casares, daba lugar a la aprobación del reglamento de los Presupuestos Participativos.

Los vecinos de Casares van a ser partícipes y corresponsables de las prioridades presupuestarias del municipio. El documento de reglamento recoge el compromiso de la Corporación Municipal a someter a presupuesto participativo una partida de 350.000 euros. El reglamento también establece las formas de organización de los participantes, la realización de propuestas y su votación.

Los presupuestos participativos

son un compromiso del equipo de gobierno de Casares puesto en marcha a través de la Concejalía de Participación Ciudadana con el que se pretende que la ciudadanía participe de manera directa del proceso de elaboración de propuestas que serán incorporadas al presupuesto municipal.

Ya se han convocado las asambleas iniciales donde la ciudadanía podrá empezar a proponer sus iniciativas y empezar a elaborar sus propuestas para el presupuesto 2017. Las fechas son: en Casares Costa: el 2 de noviembre, a las seis en la Tenencia de Alcaldía; en Secadero: el 3 de noviembre,

Los casareños podrán asistir al encuentro Unicaja - Real Madrid de la Liga de Baloncesto y al 4º partido de playoff de la Eurocopa Por segundo año consecutivo a Casares ha sido afortunada en el sorteo de entradas para asistir al encuentro de baloncesto entre el Unicaja de Málaga y el Real Madrid, uno de los partidos más solicitados de la liga nacional.

La Concejalía de Deportes contará con 55 entradas para este encuentro de la liga Nacional de Balonesto que se juega el segundo fin de semana de febrero (sábado 11 o domingo 12).

Además, a Casares se le han asignado 22 entradas para un encuentro de la Euroliga de Baloncesto. En este caso le ha

tocado el 4º Partido de Playoff de la Euroliga de Baloncesto, cuya fecha está todavía por confirmar.

El concejal Nicolas Morales junto al técnicos de Deportes representaban a Casares el pasado viernes en el sorteo que cada año realiza Diputación para el reparto de entradas de los encuentros de la presente temporada, en base al convenio que tiene con el club provincial de baloncesto y en el que participan otros 80 municipios malagueños.

Each year the residents of Casares are given co-responsibity and a say in the budgetary priorities of the municipality of Casares. The regulation document

reflects the commitment of the Municipal Corporation to submit to a participatory budget a sum of 350,000 euros. The regulation also establishes the forms of organization of the participants, the realization of proposals and their voting.

The participatory budgets are

a commitment of the Casares government team set in motion through the Department of Citizen Participation with which it is intended that residents participate directly in the process of preparing proposals that will be incorporated into the municipal budget.

The initial assemblies have already been called where citizens can begin to propose their initiatives and begin to prepare their proposals for the 2017 budget. Casares residents can enjoy the opportunity to attend the Unicaja v Real Madrid basketball match For the second year running, Casares has been fortunate in the ticket draw to attend the basketball match between Unicaja de Málaga and Real Madrid, one of the most in demand matches of the national league.

The Casares Sports Department will have 55 tickets for this match of the National Basketball League that is played the second weekend of February (Saturday 11 or Sunday 12).

In addition, Casares has been assigned 22 tickets for a match in the Basketball Euroleague specifically case for the 4th Playoff game of the Basketball Euroleague, the date for which is yet to be confirmed.

Councillor Nicolas Morales along with sports coaches represented Casares last Friday at the provincial draw that takes place every year for the distribution of tickets for

this season's matches, based on the agreement that the provincial government has with the Malaga basketball club that involves some 80 Malaga municipalities.

El Ayuntamiento de Casares edita una Guía de Recursos de Bienestar Social La primera página de este tríptico incluye todos los programas y ayudas sociales del Ayuntamiento de Casares: Comedor Social a Domicilio, Plan de Formación para el Empleo, Escuela de Memoria, Prestamos de Material Ortopédico, Programa de Madurez Activa prevención de Drogas, Transporte sociosanitario, y todas las ayudas incluidas en el Plan de Inserción Social El Plan de Inserción Social del Ayuntamiento de Casares cuenta con ayudas económicas a las familias sin recursos con trabajos comunitario como contraprestación, ayudas a desplazamientos médicos, bonificaciones para talleres municipales, asesoramiento para la inserción laboral, bolsa de trabajo, Banco Municipal de

Casares publishes a guide to the municipality’s Social Welfare resources The first page of this brochure includes all the programmes and social assistance provided by the town of Casares, including: Social Dining at Home, Training Plan for Employment, School of Memory, Orthopedic Material Loans, Active Maturity Prevention Drug Programme, Socio- Sanitation, and all the aid included in the Social Inclusion Plan The Social Inclusion Plan for the town of Casares includes financial aid to the families without resources with community work as consideration, aid to medical displacements, bonuses for municipal workshops, counselling for work placement, job bank, Municipal Food Bank and essential items of clothing, etc.

The requirements to access these resources and services are contained in another section of this information guide, which explains that it is necessary to have an evaluation by the Social Services technicians to assess the situation of the applicants before they are admitted to the programme.

Another of the services offered by the technicians of the municipal office of Social Welfare are: advice on aid and programmes from other administrations, such as tele assistance, recognition of disabilities, obtaining numerous family title, non-contributory pensions, mobility aids, among others.

La Ruta Blas Infante presenta en Sevilla la convocatoria del Premio Joven y Memorial 2016/2017 Organizados por la Ruta Blas Infante y la Fundación Blas Infante, tienen por objeto ofrecer la oportunidad a todos los andaluces de participar con la

investigación, el estudio y la imaginación a crecer un poco más como pueblo.

Se trata de una nueva iniciativa de la Ruta de Blas Infante de la que forma parte Casares junto a otros 7 municipios ( (Archidona, Coria del Río, Cantillana, Isla Cristina, Manilva, Castro del Río y Peñaflor) que tienen patrimonio infantiano y que pretende la puesta en valor del museo como activo cultural y turístico.

Emoción e incluso lagrimas en los primeros Premios Promociona Manilva Los primeros “Premios Promociona Manilva” se celebraron ayer domingo con la presencia en el CIVIMA de los premiados y familiares que vivieron momentos de mucha emoción.

El equipo de gobierno se encargó de entregar cada uno de los galardones que reconocía la labor de promoción de nuestro municipio fuera de nuestras propias fronteras.

El alcalde de Manilva, abrió la gala dirigiéndose a los presentes y recordándoles que estos premios nacen con la intención de perpetuarse en el tiempo y reconocer el esfuerzo y la constancia de los implicados, cada uno en su ámbito. El primer edil resaltó que espera que el próximo año se reconozca a otros muchos vecinos que cada día luchan por abrirse un hueco en sus diferentes facetas, sin olvidar jamás y llevando a gala el nombre de Manilva.

El primero de los premios fue otorgado a la Colonia Infantil de Sabinillas que tras 66 años de vida, sigue siendo un referente en toda Andalucía.

Fueron destacados por la labor que realizan en el ámbito deportivo el entrenador de baloncesto local Javier Montañéz y los jugadores de esta disciplina Antonio Ramos, Víctor Carpintero y José Ruiz.

En fútbol se destacó la labor de Álvaro Becerra y Germán Montes y José María Pajares, que fue destacado por su labor tanto de jugador como de entrenador y analista deportivo.

Los paralímpicos 92 Jorge, José y Encarna Parra, fueron reconocidos también por aquella hazaña. Rogelio Pascual, recibió el reconocimiento por llevar el nombre de Manilva allí donde compite en la modalidad de escalada y por ser un destacado deportista que sigue ganando

títulos.

En el apartado de padel se resaltó la labor de Diego Quirós y en el de automovilismo, a toda una vida en el deporte a Tomás López.

También recibieron reconocimiento el Motoclub Manilva, Manilva Fútbol Sala, Club Ciclista Manilva y Club Senderista Los Kruos.

En el ámbito cultural fue reconocida la labor divulgativa del nombre de Manilva a la Peña cultural Flamenca, a la Peña carnavalesca Los Niños, al cantaor Andrés Lozano y al director de la escuela de Música, Fernando Antiñolo.

El Hospital La Equina recibió su premio a manos de su director Miguel Valdés, mientras que en nombre de Gran De Select, la fábrica de cerveza ubicada

en el polígono de Manilva, estuvieron presentes dos de sus representantes, que adelantaron que ya preparan la exportación internacional de sus productos.

Jacinto Vázquez, agricultor manilveño y Argimiro Martínez, Gerente de Nilva Enoturismo, recibieron este reconocimiento por su labor de divulgación de la viña y el vino.

El artista local, Juan Oliva, vio reconocido sus años de trabajo en la creación de grandes obras que realzan las fiestas locales y en su intervención no quiso olvidarse de su equipo de trabajo con el no hubiese sido posible desarrollar su labor, como resaltó ya sobre el escenario.

En el apartado dedicado a la moda y belleza, se reconoció la labor de Fina Gómez, que hace de su trabajo con las

uñas todo un arte, ganando premios allí donde va y codeándose con los mejores de su gremio. El diseñador José Pedro Zotano, recibió un premio a su trayectoria y por llevar lejos el nombre de Manilva.

La modelo y actriz, afincada actualmente en Madrid, Carmen Muñoz, vio reconocido el esfuerzo de los últimos años con este galardón en su tierra, mientras que miss y mister Málaga, Isabel María Mena y Juan Carlos Morejón, recibieron el galardón por la representación que hicieron de su pueblo en cuantos certámenes y desfiles asistieron.

Se trató de una gala muy emotiva en la que incluso vimos alguna que otra lagrima y que se espera pueda volver a repetirse en la edición de 2017.

The Mayor of Manilva opened the gala by addressing those present and reminding them that these awards were initiated with the intention of becoming an annual event which recognize the continuing efforts of those involved, each in their own field, and he hopes that next year many other locals will be recognized who strive each day to excel in their different fields, and at the same time promoting the name of Manilva.

The first of the prizes was awarded to the Colonia Infantil de Sabinillas, which over the past 66 years of life remains a benchmark for summer camps throughout Andalucia.

The local basketball coach Javier Montañéz and his players Antonio Ramos, Victor Carpintero and José Ruiz were outstanding

The model and actress Carmen Muñoz, currently based in Madrid, was recognized for her achievements in recent effort years with this award from her hometown, whilsy Miss and Mister Malaga, Isabel Maria Mena and Juan Carlos Morejón, received the award for their representation of Manilva in many contests and parades they have attended.

It was a very emotional gala in which we even saw some tears and one which is expected to be repeated in the 2017 edition.

El taller-laboratorio de fabricación digital "Maker Manilva" ultima detalles para su apertura Continúan los preparativos para la apertura del taller-laboratorio de fabricación digital "Maker Manilva" (tipo Fab Lab), espacio de experimentación enfocado a favorecer la creatividad, la investigación y la innovación en nuevas tecnologías.

Con este innovador proyecto se potenciarán proyectos que redunden en generar nuevas empresas y den valor añadido a las ya existentes en el municipio, sin entrar en conflicto con los intereses de estas.

Desde el área de informática se presentó hace varios meses al alcalde, Diego José Jiménez, un proyecto ilusionante para empresarios y vecinos en general que tengan inquietudes y que se sirvan de las nuevas tecnologías para ampliar fronteras creativas y aportar al mercado maquinarias

de usos productivos.

Los responsables del área realizaron una demostración en el salón de plenos de las posibilidades que "Maker Manilva" podía tener de cara a la población y con un coste muy bajo, el taller laboratorio está casi finalizado.

Encontraremos maquinaria y herramientas de impresión y escaneado 3D, fresadoras, corte láser, diseño industrial, herramientas de programación de bajo coste, etc.

El proyecto está dirigido por el departamento de Informática y nuevas tecnologías del Ayuntamiento de Manilva y estará a disposición de todos los ciudadanos a primeros de año en la primera planta del edificio de Usos Múltiples.

Ya se está organizando la IV Edición De La Canicross El domingo 15 de enero de 2017 se desarrollará la próxima competición con perros, que un año más se llevará a cabo en nuestro municipio y que cada vez gana más adeptos.

La fecha fue desvelada hace unos días por Juan Alberto Sánchez, representante de Triatcan, entidad que se encarga de la organización del evento junto a la delegación de Medio Ambiente del Ayuntamiento de Manilva.

Sánchez destacó la labor que realiza el consistorio y la colaboración que presta a la entidad para la puesta en marcha

de esta actividad deportiva.

Este año se llevarán a cabo pruebas de Canicross, Bikejoring Scooter, Duatlon Dog y prueba popular e infantil, según la organización, que ha empezado a adelantar que ya se van sumando patrocinadores a la iniciativa.

Royal Canin volverá un año más a representar su marca en este evento, pero ya son muchas las empresas interesadas en apoyar esta actividad.

es de 47,912,53 € y su estado final respetará la zona verde, manteniendo las infraestructuras necesarias para un buen servicio a la población.

El proyecto del corredor litoral alcanza los 14 kilómetros con el puente elevado sobre el río Padrón El alcalde de Estepona, José María García Urbano, el presidente de la Diputación Provincial de Málaga, Elías Bendodo, y la presidenta de la Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental, Margarita del Cid, han inaugurado hoy el nuevo tramo del corredor litoral, que conecta el hotel Kempinski con el centro comercial Laguna Village.

El regidor ha señalado que el proyecto del corredor litoral ha alcanzado ya los 14 kilómetros de ejecución, y ha destacado que el nuevo tramo es “uno de los más interesantes de los realizados porque cuenta con un puente elevado de madera de 32 metros de longitud sobre el río Padrón”.

Además de la instalación de esta nueva infraestructura, el nuevo tramo ha conseguido mejorar la accesibilidad de los peatones en el entorno del río Padrón,

eliminando barreras e introduciendo nuevas vías adaptadas también a personas con movilidad reducida. El proyecto también ha incluido la instalación del alumbrado público en este tramo con una iluminación de especial sensibilidad para no alterar el medio natural de la zona, que se sitúa en la desembocadura del río Padrón.

En el nuevo tramo también se han realizado trabajos de adecuación, pavimentación y jardinería, por lo que los ciudadanos podrán pasear ahora por un enclave cuidado y con unas vistas privilegiadas.

Los trabajos, que se iniciaron el pasado mes de julio, se licitaron por un total de 452.211 euros y fueron adjudicados a la empresa Inditec por un importe de 246.500 euros.

La Ruta de Murales Artísticos suma una obra que reivindica la lucha por la igualdad de género

S

ueños de Libertad es una creación del artista local Francisco Alarcón y la obra número 35 que se incorpora a esta iniciativa municipal.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona ha incorporado una nueva obra a la Ruta Artística de Murales, que homenajea la lucha por la igualdad de género. Esta obra -que ha sido costeada por la Fundación Antonia Guerreroes una creación del artista local Francisco Alarcón donde plasma la filosofía de Antonia Guerrero (esteponera que falleció en 1928 y donó a la ciudad su herencia para facilitar el acceso de las mujeres con pocos recursos a la educación). La creación, titulada 'Sueños de Libertad', está situada en una fachada del edificio Caravaca, en una la esquina entre las calles Valencia y Zaragoza.

El autor ha querido plasmar el carácter pionero de Antonia Guerrero en su lucha por la igualdad de la mujer, así como su generosidad, al legar su herencia para que aquellas mujeres sin recursos que desearan estudiar lo pudieran hacer.

De esta forma, Alarcón ha explicado que la pintura representa a dos figuras que se encuentran en total comunicación, por un lado una mujer, que encarna a Antonia Guerrero en su juventud, la cual mira en su interior y sueña con poder estudiar y sentirse realizada en este ámbito, y por otro lado aparece un jilguero que

simboliza sus deseos de libertad.

Asimismo, ha informado que en el mural de ocho metros de altura y estilo romántico, ha utiliza-

do una amplia paleta de colores de gran viveza para trasladar el afán de superación y la vitalidad de esta luchadora.

The coach is leaving the Estepona area at 9.15am and returning from Gibraltar at 3.30pm. ueños de Libertad (Dreams of Freedom) is the creation of local artist Francisco Alarcón and mural number 35 of Estepona’s ‘Ruta de Murales Artísticos‘.

This new work to the Mural Trail, honours the struggle for gender equality. This work, which was funded by the Foundation Antonia Guerrero is the brainchild of local artist Francisco Alarcón and is in keeping with the philosophy of Antonia Guerrero (a resident of Estepona who died in 1928 and donated her wealth to facilitate access of women with few resources to education).

The creation, titled 'Dreams of Freedom', is located on the facade of the Caravaca building, on the corner between Calles Valencia and Zaragoza.

Guerrero in her struggle for equality for women and her generosity to bequeath her legacy for those poor women who wished to gain an education.

To this end Alarcon explained that the painting depicts two figures in total communication, on the one hand a woman, representing Antonia Guerrero in her youth, who

dreams to study and feel fulfilled in this area, and on the other hand a goldfinch symbolizing their desire for freedom.

The mural eight metres high and painted in the romantic style, uses a wide palette of vivid colors to convey the vitality and desire to excel of this fighter for women’s equality.

Next month, December 7, the Club are taking their annual trip to see the Malaga lights, the coach leaves Estepona at 4pm and returns from Malaga at 10pm and December 13 is the Club’s Christmas lunch at La Grappa restaurant with a Christmas demonstration by local events florist Maxine Bygraves, cost 20€ for two course lunch followed by mince pie and coffee. Alejandro Pérez García obtiene la categoría de Maestro Internacional de Ajedrez con 16 años El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa que el ajedrecita esteponero iniciado en la Escuela Municipal de Ajedrez, Alejandro Pérez García, actual campeón de España y campeón de Andalucía SUB-14 y SUB-18, y Maestro FIDE, ha obtenido el título de Maestro Internacional con tan sólo 16 años, al imponerse en el WinterChess celebrado en el Magistal de Ajedrez del Arenal, del 17 al 23 de octubre.

El joven jugador de 16 años, que asistió como enviado de la FEDA, se impuso con solvencia en el Torneo cerrado para normas de MI celebrado en el Club Náutico de S’Arenal, al totalizar 6,6 puntos que, a la postre, le ha supuesto conseguir su tercera y definitiva norma de MI, logrando los objetivos deportivos marcados, tras lo que podrá solicitar en breve el titulo de Maestro Internacional. De esta forma, Estepona tiene por primera vez en su historia un Maestro Internacional de Ajedrez M.I., un título vitalicio que otorga

la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez, FIDE, a destacados jugadores de ajedrez.

El historial ajedrecístico de Alejandro comenzó siendo un niño; con 7 años entró en la Escuela Municipal de Ajedrez de Estepona y, rápidamente, demuestra un talento innato en las clases y en las competiciones, que hacía prever un éxito importante. Por citar algunos de sus logros, Alejandro ha sido Campeón Provincial en

varias categorías, Campeón de Andalucía, Campeón de España... Además, ha destacado en el mundial 2015 con 7 puntos de 11, en el Europeo de Georgia consiguió 5 puntos de las 6 primeras partidas ganando incluso al jugador con más ELO del torneo, pero las 3 ultimas partidas las perdió, quedando en el puesto 30 de 99 participantes de toda Europa.

Ha jugado tres torneos para normas de Maestro Internacional consiguiendo el titulo de Maestro Internacional de la FIDE. En 2014 culminó un gran año lleno de éxitos, consiguiendo buenísimos resultados en torneos nacionales e internacionales y el Campeonato de Andalucía sub18 y sub-14, obteniendo un ELO de 2.400 puntos con una gran actuación en el Internacional de Lorca y el XXVI Internacional de Roquetas, Internacional del Puerto de Santa María Internacional de Palma de Mallorca, Internacional Winter Chess, etc.

Club de Lectura de Estepona El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa que el Club de Lectura de Estepona está pendiente de ser admitido para entrar a formar parte de la Red Andaluza de Clubes de Lectura.

Esta Red aglutina a cientos de grupos de lectura estables en toda la comunidad autónoma, y en la misma están integrados, entre otros, grupos de bibliotecas municipales, bibliotecas públicas provinciales, centros escolares de todos los niveles educativos y asociaciones.

El club de lectura Estepona está formado actualmente por un grupo de 15 personas que se reúnen una vez al mes para

comentar un libro determinado que han leído al mismo tiempo en su casa, lo que fomenta la afición por la lectura a través del intercambio de opiniones por medio de interesantes coloquios.

Estas reuniones se celebran en el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel con una periodicidad mensual, y en ellas se comentan no sólo la obra desde un punto de vista literario, sino las reflexiones y sentimientos que suscita la trama, los personajes o el tema del libro.

Aunque el grupo arrancó su actividad en octubre del pasado año con menos de diez

componentes, no se recomienda que exceda de veinte, por lo que, a medida que vaya creciendo el número de componentes se podrán formar distintos grupos dentro del mismo Club, de forma que en cada uno haya una persona encargada de moderar los debates y elaborar la programación de lecturas a partir de los gustos o deseos de sus miembros.

El Ayuntamiento retira en un año 70 vallas de publicidad para reducir la contaminación visual El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa de que en el último año se han retirado un total de 70 instalaciones publicitarias con el objetivo de reducir la contaminación visual en el paisaje urbano. El concejal adscrito al área de Comercio y Publicidad Exterior, José Antonio Vílchez, ha explicado que este descenso en el número de vallas y monopostes se debe a que desde el pasado mes de mayo el Consistorio dispone de una Ordenanza Reguladora de Publicidad Exterior, que tiene como objetivo establecer una serie de normas que protejan el entorno paisajístico.

Los elementos quitados (vallas, monopostes publicitarios, mástiles, señaléticas) habían sido colocados en parcelas públicas y privadas sin las previas y preceptivas licencias municipales.

Además, el pasado mes de mayo el Consistorio notificó a todos los agentes de publicidad que se fijaba un plazo máximo de seis meses para que las instalaciones que carecieran de la oportuna licencia, o que teniendolas no se ajustase a sus

prescripciones, deberían ser retiradas o adaptadas.

El edil ha explicado que desde la Delegación de Publicidad Exterior, y con el fin de evitar la proliferación de instalaciones publicitarias, ubicadas sin las previas y preceptivas licencias municipales y sin las garantías legales y de seguridad establecidas para ello en la normativa vigente, se han realizado las gestiones oportunas -tanto con las empresas instaladoras, los anunciantes y propietarios de terrenos- para dar cumplimiento a la normativa, así como a la seguridad y protección del entorno, regulándose así la situación en la que se encontraba el término municipal de Estepona en materia de publicidad exterior.

En este sentido, ha asegurado que la ordenanza municipal sobre esta materia persigue adecuar a las nuevas directrices de ordenamiento del municipio toda la publicidad exterior. En definitiva, se trata de que el legítimo ejercicio de la actividad publicitaria que se realice en lugares públicos se desarrolle dentro del respeto y mejora de los valores del paisaje urbano, del medio ambiente, del patrimonio histórico- artístico y, en general, de la imagen de la ciudad de Estepona.

Esta normativa, además de establecer el régimen aplicable a la actividad publicitaria visible desde la vía pública, se constituye como una herramienta que contribuye al desarrollo del paisaje urbano como manifestación formal de una realidad social, cultural e histórica, evitándose así producir daños, distorsiones perjudiciales para el paisaje urbano o natural, que por ubicación pueden perjudicar o comprometer la adecuada visibilidad de los viandantes, del tráfico rodado y de su señalización; afectando, asimismo, de forma negativa a la imagen urbana y al fomento de la valoración y percepción exterior de nuestra ciudad como destino de una gran afluencia turística.

The town hall removes 70 billboards to reduce visual pollution The Estepona town hall has withdrawn a total of 70 advertising installations over the last year in order to reduce visual pollution of the urban landscape. Trade and Outdoor Advertising councilor, José Antonio Vilchez, explained that this decrease in the number of billboards and monopoles has been ongoing since last May due to a Outdoor Advertising ordinance, which aims to establish a set of rules to protect the landscape.

The removed items (billboards, advertising monopoles, masts, signage) had been placed on public and private land without the previous and mandatory municipal licenses.

In addition, last May the town hall notified all advertising agents that they had a maximum

period of six months for facilities that lacked the appropriate license, or which had them but did not comply with its requirements, to be withdrawn or adapted.

These regulations, aside from establishing the rules applicable to advertising visible from the street, are also established as a tool that contributes to the development of the urban landscape as a formal manifestation of a social, cultural and historical reality, thus avoiding doing any harm and damage to the urban or natural landscape, impairing or jeopardizing adequate visibility of pedestrians, road traffic and their signaling; etc.

Christmas in Spain

As November marches on our attention turns to

Christmas and the fun and festivities that go with it.

Whilst Christmas is celebrated widely in Spain the main focus is

on the festival of Los Reyes Magos, or Three Kings which is held

on January 6th, this means that the holiday period is a full

fortnight.

Beginning on Christmas Eve or Noche Buena most Spaniards will spend the first part of the evening with family enjoying a huge feast, often of fish and shellfish, but also just about everything else you can think, after which those who are still mobile will go out after midnight to party or visit friends.

Christmas Day is a fairly quiet day with some children receiving gifts from Santa, whilst others have to wait for the Three Kings to bring their goodies.

You then have about a week to recover before New Year’s Eve, or Nochevieja, which again tends to begin after midnight and following the tradition of the 12 grapes when the chimes of midnight are each accompanied with the eating of a grape. Following this, yes you guessed it, it’s party time until the early hours.

The grand finale for the festive period is Three Kings. A couple of days before the children will have delivered their letters detailing the gifts they would like to receive, and on evening of the 5th January there are huge processions (read mobile riots) through the streets of every village, town and city, during which literally tons of sweets are hurled into the eager crowds.

On the 6th the children traditionally open their presents.

El Auditorio Felipe VI acoge el concierto del ganador de La Voz Kids, José María Ruiz El próximo viernes 16 de diciembre, a las 20:30 horas, actuará en el Auditorio Felipe VI el joven cantante José María Ruiz, ganador de la segunda edición del programa televisivo 'La Voz Kids'.

Presentará su último trabajo 'No te pido más', compuesto por canciones inéditas de estilo pop. Se trata de su segundo trabajo discográfico, que está en el mercado desde el pasado

septiembre.

El joven artista, natural de Palma del Río (Sevilla), comenzó a interpretar sus primeros temas a los tres años y pronto saltó al mundo de la televisión en en programa de Canal Sur 'Menuda Noche'.

Se presentó a los castings de la segunda edición del programa televisivo y participó junto su 'coach' Manuel Carrasco.

This is his second album, released last September which features previously unreleased pop songs.

The young singer, from Palma del Río in Seville, first performed on television in the Canal Sur tv show ‘Menuda Noche’.

Nyland Knight Foundation - ayudando a los niños de Gambia Unas vacaciones en Gambia hace 20 años fue el catalizador para establecer la Nyland Knight Foundation por un residente local, David Harmston y su mujer Terri.

Lo que comenzó con el patrocinio de un solo niño, ha crecido hasta el punto de que la fundación proporciona fondos para 80 escolares, y ha crecido para pagar y gestionar numerosos proyectos en el poblado de Kunkujang Keita, en esta pequeña y olvidada parte de África.

Gambie es un país pobre, y, aunque los niños del poblado no están hambrientos, son tan pobres que no tienen zapatos y casi no tienen ropa, y el sistema escolar no es gratuito, lo que significa que muchos de esos niños nunca tendrán la oportunidad de recibir una educación que podrá liberarles de las cadenas de la pobreza.

Fue este hecho lo que hizo que David y Terri se involucraran, ya que el coste de escolarizar a un niño es de solo 50 Euros al año, una suma que, aunque para muchos de nosotros es insignificante, para los habitantes del poblado es algo

inalcanzable.

En los años recientes, gracias al trabajo de la organización benéfica, la Escuela Infantil de Kinkujang ha crecido, preparando a 200 niños desde los tres a los ocho años para la educación pública. Se han centrado en mejorar la infraestructura y las instalaciones del colegio hasta el punto de haberse convertido en la mejor escuela primaria de Gambia.

Todo eso cuesta dinero, y uno de los principales gastos son las nóminas del personal del colegio, compuesto por diez personas, y aunque a corto plazo esto está cubierto, la organización desea asegurar el financiamiento a largo plazo. Además, la organización ha estado muy activa reconstruyendo el mercado del pueblo, donde las mujeres pueden vender sus productos y cosechas. Uno de los problemas ha sido que muchas mujeres no tienen suficiente para vender y hacer que el negocio sea viable, y aquí la organización

ha realizado numerosos micro préstamos para permitirles comprar artículos para la venta. Esta iniciativa ha tenido mucho éxito, y el objetivo es ampliar este sistema en el futuro. Esto nos lleva a la tercera iniciativa de la organización, que es el desarrollo de un centro auto suficiente, que permitirá a los habitantes del poblado cultivar productos y tener ganado para la venta en el mercado y en otros sitios. Para ello, están construyendo inver-

naderos y lechos elevados para verduras y gallineros, y concediendo micro créditos de entre 40 y 100 euros para la compra de semillas, pollos y cabras.

El proyecto será un proyecto piloto durante un año, y si tiene éxito, se ampliará para incluir conejos y patos.

Mirando hacia el futuro, el deseo de la Nyland Knight Foundation es implementar este sistema de auto suficiencia y micro créditos a otros poblados de Gambia.

Nyland Knight Charitable Foundation - helping the children of The Gambia A holiday in The Gambia some 20 years ago was the catalyst for the establishment of the Nyland Knight Foundation by local resident David Harmston and his wife Terri.

What began with the sponsorship of a single child has grown to the extent that the foundation now provides funding for 80 schoolchildren, and has expanded to pay for and manage a whole host of projects in the village of Kunkujang Keita in this small part of a forgotten Africa.

The Gambia is a poor country, and whilst the children in the village are not starving they are so poor they have no shoes and very few clothes, and the school system

is not free which means many of the children will never get the opportunity for an education that can free them from the chains of poverty.

It was this fact that prompted David and Terri to become involved as the cost of putting a child through school is just 50 euros a year, a sum which, whilst less than the average round of golf here in Spain, is way beyond the means of most of the villagers.

In recent years thanks to the charity’s work the Kunkujang Nursery School has expanded, preparing 200 three to eight year olds for state education. There has been a focus on improving the

school’s infrastructure and facilities to the point where it has been designated as the best primary school inThe Gambia.

This all comes at a cost, one of the major expenses being the payroll for the school’s staff of ten, and whilst the immediate future is taken care of, the charity is looking to secure funding for the long term.

One of the problems has been that many of the women don’t have enough to sell to make a viable business, and to this end the charity has given a number of them micro loans to enable them to purchase stock. This initiative has proven very successful and the aim is to expand this system in the future.

This also leads into the third initiative the charity is developing which is a self sufficiency centre, which will allow villagers to grow produce and small livestock for

sale in the women’s market and beyond. To this end they are building raised vegetable beds and chicken pens and providing micro loans of between 40 and 100 euros for the purchase of seeds, young chickens and goats.

Their project will be piloted for a year and if it proves successful it will be expanded and include ducks and rabbits.

Looking to the future the Nyland Knight Foundation would like to roll out this system of self-sufficiency

and micro loans to other villages in The Gambia.

La pequeña Isabella necesita tu ayuda Hace dos años y medio, Isabella Jones fue diagnosticada con fibrosis quística (doble cepa df508) cuando solo tenía ocho semanas de edad. Esto fue un gran golpe para su familia ya que su madre nunca supo que ni siquiera existía el gen en su familia. Pasó su embarazo sin saber nada de esto, y puedes imaginar su devastación al descubrir este hecho. Todos los días es una batalla constante para mantenerla sana y bien. Sus padres le administran más de 40 medicamentos todos los días, junto con mucha fisioterapia para extraer el moco de sus pulmones. También tiene que tomar cápsulas Creon cada vez que come ya que su páncreas no absorbe ni la grasa ni los nutrientes.

Debido a la acumulación de moco en sus pulmones, aparecen muchas complicaciones así que necesitan recaudar dinero para comprar un Afflovest. Esto eliminará las secreciones de sus pulmones y hará que sea más fácil para ella respirar, y con suerte no tendrá que estar en el hospital.

Normalmente está bien durante

10 semanas, tras las cuales aparece otra infección pulmonar y tiene que ser admitida en el hospital para recibir un tratamiento de antibióticos durante 10 días de forma intravenosa para eliminar la infección de sus pulmones.

Esto es muy duro para sus padres, como puedes imaginar, ya que Isabella solo tiene dos años y cinco meses de edad.

Una vez conseguido el Afflovest para Isabella, el próximo objetivo será financiar su tratamiento de medicamentos, que necesita para vivir una vida lo más normal posible. En este momento los médicos dicen que solo vivirá hasta los ocho años, a menos que

pueda conseguir un tratamiento adecuado. La familia se ha marcado el objetivo de recaudar 30.000 euros para cubrir el coste del Afflovest y de los chalecos que deben ir cambiándose a medida que Isabella crece, junto con otros tratamientos.

Young Isabella needs your help!

Two and a half-year-old Isabella Jones was diagnosed with (CF) Cystic fibrosis (strain double df508) at just eight weeks old, this was a big shock to all of her family as her mother never knew she even had the CF gene in the family.

She had gone through her pregnancy without any knowledge of any of this and was devastated as you can imagine to find out Isabella had this. Every day is a constant battle to keep her healthy and well, Her parents have to give her over 40 medications every day along with lots of physio to free up the mucus in her lungs. She also has to take Creon capsules whenever she eats as her pancreas does not absorb the fat or nutrients.

Because of the buildup of mucus in her lungs, this causes many complications for her so they NEED to raise money for an Afflovest. This will help clear the secretions in her lungs and make her breathe more easily and hopefully keep her out of hospital. Keeping her as healthy as they can Isabella normally has 10 clear weeks after which she then begins to go down hill as another lung infection sets in she

then has to be admitted to hospital for a 14 day course of antibiotics by drip this basically clears the lungs of infection, it's very hard for the family as you can imagine especially Isabella as she is only two years and 5 months old.

Once the goal is reached for the vest for Isabella, the next stage begins which will be funding her treatment for the drugs needed for her to live as normal life as possible, at the moment the doctors say she will only live until the age of 8 years, unless she can get the correct treatment.

The family have set a target to raise 30,000 euros to cover the cost of the Afflovest unit and the vests which have to be exchanged as Isabella grows, along with other treatments and at the time of going to press they have already raised just over 22,000 euros, thanks to the generosity of family, friends and the general public, and just need your help to get them to their target before the end of the year.

ICE Club - Looking back at October

October began on the 1st (obviously) with our Welcome Back Party, ostensibly to welcome back those of us who had spent the summer away from the Costa, but who needs an excuse for a party?

A great buffet supper , the bar was busy, and there was dancing to live music kindly sponsored by Maria Read and First Assistance Costa del Sol S.L. Our Open Day on October 3rd brought a number of new members, so that we are now 415!

This was followed on October 4th by the Golf Society Autumn Cup, which resulted in an Irish tour de force as far as the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s 2016 champions and 10 of the other 14 available prizes were concerned!

This well-attended event took place at the Valle Romano Golf Club and Resort, and the Presentation Lunch was held at the Brasserie de Arturo at Casares Golf Club, after which the party continued well into the evening.

The reigning Ladies’ Champion is Rosemary McKenna, and the Gents’ Champion is John Crowley.

Congratulations to them and the other prize-winners!

On Sunday 9th a coach-load of us set off on our eagerly-awaited 6-day visit to Portugal. Our first stop was in Jerez de los Caballeros in Extremadura, a quaint and historic town where we had a guided tour and time for a leisurely meal. On Monday we crossed the border into Portugal, and as we headed for the capital we made stops at the ancient hilltop walled town of Monsaraz and the Roman town of Evora. Before entering Lisbon we viewed the city from across

the river Tagus at the foot of the huge statue of Christ the King.

Tuesday was spent exploring the city by coach, on foot and by boat: fascinating history, amazing architecture, a great buzz and delicious custard tarts! The next day – the only rainy day – we headed south to the Algarve, stopping to view the hilltop fortress at Silves before reaching our resort hotel perched on the edge of the cliff at Carvoeiro. From here on Thursday we went westwards to see the spectacular southwestern extremity of the European continent, Cabo San Vicente, and the pretty historic town of Lagos with its slave market, a relic of the age of discovery and colonisation.

After an excellent buffet dinner on both nights here ICE members led the dancing to live music, so by Friday we were a pretty exhausted crowd heading eastward along the coast. Our last stops in Portugal were in the pretty town of Tavira for lunch, and then at the market in Vila Real de Santo Antonio for a lastminute search for bargains. Our thanks went to Joan our organiser at ICE for another great trip.

The Autumn Fayre On October 22nd was well attended and great fun, with plenty of games and competitions, bacon and sausage rolls and home-made cakes.

Next, the club’s 28th Birthday Party at Val Paraiso Golf on November 5th.

60º Aniversario de la Revolución Húngara de 1956 El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa que el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel acogerá el próximo jueves, 10 de noviembre de 2016, a las 18:00 horas, la inauguración de la Exposición de Carteles “60º Aniversario de la Revolución Húngara de 1956”.

El acto estará a cargo del alcalde de Estepona, José María García Urbano, acompañado por la embajadora de Hungría en España, Enikö Györi, y el cónsul honorario de Hungría en Andalucía, Patricio Baeza.

Acto seguido, se ofrecerá a los asistentes un cóctel con vinos y embutidos húngaros.

Par finalizar, se proyectará la película “Hijos de la Gloria” (2006), dirigida por Krisztina Goda, y protagonizada por Ivan Fenyo, Kata Dobó y Sándor Csánvi, entre otros. Se trata de un drama basado en hechos reales, situado en los Juegos Olímpicos de 1956, en Melbourne, donde el equipo húngaro de waterpolo se enfrentó con ferocidad al equipo soviético, en el que sería uno de los partidos más salvajes de la historia del deporte. Exhibition celebrating the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution Estepona’s Padre Manuel Cultural Centre will host an exhibition of Posters celebrating the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution which will be inaugurated on Thursday 10 November at 6 pm.

Bafi, El Perro Pues aunque no lo creáis, lo echaremos de menos...

El conocía mejor que nadie las calles de este pueblo, sus enredos, sus obras, sus vecinos, a los gatos, a otros perros, a los ciegos, a los cojos, a los viejos, a los jóvenes en el video club buscando novedades...

Conoció el soplo de la hierbabuena: el aire verde del campo; divisó a las alondras que con su dulce y largo canto migraron antes de la llegada del invierno; también intimó la triste mañana enamorada del hermano.

Pasó por escaparates, llanura de sábanas y de telas, modistos de trajes.

Muchas veces se coló en la subasta, tentativa de las cooperativas: modelo de economía social entre anáforas.

El perro husmeó lleno de inquietud las aceras –era tan nervioso–, todas las perras, volátiles lo amaban -¡qué insistencia en el cortejo!–.

Una vez oyó la despedida de los amantes, irrumpió ladridos al amor desesperado, y, en la madrugada, sus aullidos convocaban las pasiones.

Conoció de cerca a los amigos, a los robinsón, a los delicados, a los enfrentados, a los revolucionarios, a los músicos y a los pescadores del silencio; y conoció muy bien a los campesinos porque su amigo más fiel era del campo.

Compuso la palabra ‘perlaperra’ para tratar de subsistir, aunque no hay palabras que alcancen lo indiviso del conocimiento y determine la existencia. Él sabía que la humanidad no hacía tanto que comenzó a entablar conversaciones, que los perros se defendían con una gramática de pureza altiva.

Contempló su propia muerte: si aquel anochecer ese perro joven, grande y fuerte, no hubiera topado con él -la verdad es que siempre fue un perro osado y valiente -, y le hubiera mordido en la garganta.

ue yo te perdone no significa que tenga que seguir entre tus redes. El amor no se va, se entibia y en apatía se desvanece; sí que se arrincona el amor, se prensa contra la esquina, nos ahoga. La unidad en un descampado tronando desafíos, buscando continentes nuevos, amores nuevos, espacios para bailar la taquicardia de una noche joven que ya pasó para siempre.

Porque un amor de tantos años ni se olvida, ni se detiene en el brocal del pozo, mas reduce el corazón y lo asfixia cuando se siente herido por la sumisión de uno de los dos.

Siguen llamando a estas llanuras, que se extienden desde la última calle del pueblo hasta el arroyo que da principio a las urbanizaciones: ‘Llanuras del entripado’.

Es cuestión de días para volar con las flores y dormir para siempre.

Es asunto de amar la oratoria del viento y no oír más disparos (y ojalá no los hubiera habido nunca) que los ya pintados en Guernica.

Miraron, provocaron espanto, sustentaron las ideas pero con ira de volcanes, y, ¡qué cólera adulta restregaron por las calles!, –de unos a otros, odio a raudales–.

Pero eso pasó hace mucho tiempo; ¿que no debían tratarlos de ese modo?

Ciertamente, pero hoy, hoy duermen los justos y se ha calmado la noche hermanada con la paz de las estrellas, y hoy, la ‘Llanura del entripado’, que se extiende desde la última calle del pueblo hasta el arroyo que da al principio de las urbanizaciones, muestra las nuevas azucenas y los lirios silvestres; y allí los avances del siglo veintiuno no se advierten; y un vecino anciano sabe que es cuestión de días para volar entre las flores y la historia en una memoria de objetos tallados con el perdón.

El árbol veterano, supongo, dará frutos sabios; una vejez para un encuentro o para una vida desmembrada.

Hay una voluntad en los ancianos para que sus cosechas continúen herencia a herencia llenado la tierra con su sangre. (La sangre y el agua es lo que queda para redimirse en el fruto del alma, y así el cuerpo en su espíritu es joven y consistente).

Sé que tu alma se resquebrajó cuando te enteraste de lo ocurrido con nuestra hija, las preocupaciones invadieron tu páncreas y enfermaste; después de un tiempo sanaste. Reparto de desayunos infantiles Estepona En abril de 2.010 abrió sus

puertas el Comedor Social Emaús de Estepona gracias a la colaboración del Ilmo.

Ayuntamiento y a las aportaciones del Rotary Club. Durante estos años hemos atendido a los usuarios del comedor de lunes a sábado, incluido festivos, con el almuerzo caliente compuesto por dos platos y una bolsa tipo pic-nic para la cena y el desayuno.

Ocasionalmente entregamos alimentos infantiles gracias a las recogidas de alimentos realizadas por particulares, como por ejemplo el Hotel Marriott´s.

En este año 2.016, gracias a la aportación de la Duquesa Society of St. George, de un talón de 9.600€, y a su estimado apoyo,

el Comedor de Estepona puede complementar su servicio de desayuno, específicamente para que los niños se lo puedan llevar al colegio y no pasen necesidad por las mañanas. Queremos evitar los problemas que estos

niños sufren, principalmente la falta de concentración y por lo tanto bajo rendimiento escolar.

La entrega de desayunos y meriendas a los niños del Comedor Social Emaús de Estepona se inició a finales del mes de mayo. De media en el Comedor se han atendido a 40 niños hasta el final del periodo escolar. Dos veces por semana se las ha entregado a los padres una bolsa con todo lo necesarios para el desayuno y merienda. En la bolsa se entregan de forma alterna zumos, batidos, yogures, galletas, quesitos, barritas de cereales, fruta, etc., siempre intentando favorecer que estos niños tengan una alimentación equilibrada. A la llegada de las vacaciones de verano se han seguido entregando dos veces por semana esta bolsa especial para el desayuno/merienda de los niños.

Providing breakfasts for disadvantaged schoolchildren in Estepona In April 2010, the Emaús Social Kitchen in Estepona was opened thanks to the collaboration of Estepona Town Council and the contributions from the Rotary Club. During these years we have served the diners from Monday to Saturday, including holidays, with a hot lunch consisting of two dishes and a picnic bag for dinner and breakfast. We occasionally deliver baby food thanks to food pick-ups made by individuals, such as Marriott's Hotel.

This year 2016, thanks to the contribution of the Duquesa Charitable Society of St. George of 9,600 euros, and their continued support, the Estepona social kitchen has begun to supplement its breakfast service, specifically for children to have a packed breakfast and afternoon snack to take to school and not have to go hungry in the mornings. The aim is to alleviate the problems that these children suffer, mainly the lack of concentration and therefore low school performance.

The delivery of breakfasts and snacks to the children of the Emmaús Social Kitchen in Estepona began at the end of May. On average 40 children have been served until the end of the school Term. Twice a week they have delivered to the parents a bag with everything necessary for breakfast and afternoon snack. In the bag,

juices, shakes, yogurts, biscuits, cheese, cereal bars, fruit, etc., are always delivered, aiming to encourage these children to have a balanced diet.

During the summer holidays the social kitchen have continued to deliver twice a week this special bag for breakfast / snack for the children.

Residente local y la Asociación Local resident and St George Charity donate Benéfica Saint George donan camas hospital beds to Hogar Marillac de hospital al Hogar Marillac As part of the Duquesa Charitable Como parte de la política de la Duquesa Charitable Society of Saint George de dar apoyo a una amplia gama de buenas causas en la comunidad local, la Asociación se enorgullece de proveer tres camas de hospital eléctricas al Hogar Marillac en La Línea.

Hogar Marillac está dirigido por la orden religiosa Hijas de la Caridad de San Vicente de Paul, y acoge a 15 hombres de edades comprendidas entre los 40 y los 50 años que han sido drogodependientes, y la mayoría sufre de SIDA y VIH y otros problemas físicos y psicológicos como resultado del abuso de las drogas y la pobreza.

Los residentes reciben tratamiento por sus adicciones y problemas de salud, y participan en clases educativas como lectura y escritura, algo básico de lo que muchos de ellos carecen, e infor-

mática básica, artesanía, etc. Sin Hogar Marillac, la mayoría de estos hombres estarían en la calle y probablemente volverían a sus adicciones y enfermedades, provocando una muerte temprana.

Las Hermanas del Hogar Marillac están en el proceso de comprar un minibús y han recibido una generosa donación del Fondo Social de La Caixa para este fin. Ya que esta donación no cubre todo el importe necesario, la Organización Benéfica Saint George se ha comprometido para cubrir el resto.

Society of Saint George’s policy to support a wide range of good causes in the local community the St George Charity is proud to provide three electrically operated hospital beds to the Hogar Marillac home in La Linea.

Two of the beds were kindly donated by Guadiaro resident Irene Kemm, and the third was purchased by the Charity from a local source.

Hogar Marillac is run by the religious order Hijas de la Caridad de San Vicente de Paul (Sisters of Charity) and houses some 15 men, in their 40s and 50s, most of whom have been drug addicts and the majority suffering from HIV and AIDS and other physical and mental problems as a result of their drug use and poverty.

The residents receive treatment for their addictions and health issues as well as joining in educational classes such as reading and writing, a basic skill many of them lack, as well as basic IT, arts and crafts, etc. Without Hogar Marillac most of the men would be homeless and would probably lapse back into addiction and ill health, and

the inevitable early death that goes with that way of life.

The Sisters at Hogar Marillac are in the process of purchasing a minibus and have received a generous donation from La Caixa bank’s social fund for that purpose, although it leaves them short of the full amount, the Saint George Charity has committed to making up the shortfall.

Exhibición de artesanía navideña y fantasía de moda

El festival de helados benéficos recauda más de 900 euros

La Duquesa Charitable Society of St. George, en colaboración con el Departamento de Comercio del Ayuntamiento de Manilva organiza un Mercadillo Navideño y Desfile de Moda.

El evento se celebrará en el Pabellón Deportivo de Sabinillas, el domingo 13 de noviembre desde las 11 am y contará con docenas de puestos que venderán todo tipo de artesanía, ideal para ese regalo especial estas Navidades.

También disfrutaremos de un desfile de moda organizado por la Organización Benéfica St. George, que nos dará la oportunidad de adquirir ropa, zapatos y accesorios de alta calidad a precios de ganga. El desfile se celebrará desde las 13.30 hasta las 15.30.

El público podrá disfrutar de snacks caseros.

Siempre es un día triste para los amantes del buen helado en Sabinillas cuando la heladería italiana Da Vinci cierra sus puertas para el invierno. Este año, Da Vinci decidió celebrar el fin de temporada con el Festival de helados benéficos, y todos los beneficios fueron a la Duquesa Charitable Society

of St. George que donará esta recaudación a la asociación local de discapacitados “Luisiana”.

A pesar de que el tiempo no acompañaba durante el evento, la dirección y el personal de Da Vinci consiguieron recaudar 905 Euros para la organización benéfica.

Charity Ice Cream Festival raises over 900 euros It is always a sad day for ice cream lovers in Sabinillas when the local Italian ice cream parlour, Da Vinci’s, closes its doors for the winter. This year though Da Vinci’s decided to celebrate the end of the season with a Charity Ice Cream Festival with all profits going to the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George

with the wish that they would be donated to the local handicapped association ‘Luisana’.

Despite some inclement weather during the event, the management and staff of Da Vinci’s still managed to raise a whopping 905 euros for the charity.

Christmas Arts & Crafts Exhibition and Fashion Extravaganza The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George, in collaboration with Manilva Town Hall’s Commerce Department is organising a Christmas Arts & Crafts Fair and Fashion Extravaganza.

The event will be held at the Sabinillas Sports Centre in Sabinillas, Manilva, on Sunday 13 November from 11 am and will

feature dozens of stalls selling all kinds of arts and crafts, ideal for that something special to give as a gift this Christmas.

There will also be a fashion show organised by the Saint George Charity with an opportunity to buy some top quality clothes, shoes and accessories at bargain prices.

Boxing Day sponsored swim After the success of last year’s inaugural Sabi Spartan Boxing Day Swim, which raised nearly a thousand euros for charity, local resident Ian Ewing is organising the second edition of this event, in collaboration with the St George Charity and the Nyland Knight Foundation.

The swim takes place around 1 pm on Monday 26 December in front of the statue in Sabinillas. All swimmers are welcome, and if you don’t fancy braving the waves then

you can always help by sponsoring someone who is.

All monies raised will be divided between The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George and the Nyland Knight Charitable Foundation.

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain weekly surgery The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George is hosting a weekly surgery by Citizens Advice Bureau Spain every Wednesday morning from 10.30 am to 1 pm.

The surgery will be held at the St George Charity’s new shop in Calle Aurora de Albornoz, Punta Almina, Sabinillas, and is part of the Charity’s community support programme.

If you would like to see one of CAB Spain’s advisers then pop along to the shop on Wednesday morning, although it is advisable to book an appointment as it can sometimes be busy.

All consultations are free but CAB Spain is funded by donations, so if you feel that their advice has been valuable then please make a donation in the tin provided.

Low Fat or No Fat? Are you still on a low fat diet?

If so, then this may come as a surprise to you FAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU FAT! In fact, eating enough fat is essential if you want to lose weight without starving yourself.

I'm not talking about just any old fatty foods such as McDonalds, fried breakfast or donuts, because, if eating refined fatty fast foods made you lose weight, do you think we would be seeing incidences of obesity and diabetics in epidemic proportions?

The fats I am talking about are the good healthy fats that help make up a healthy balanced diet. Which when combined with good protein and quality carbs, (mainly fresh vegetables and fruits for your carbs.) Remember staying away from refined carbs and sugars is a must if you want to lose weight and get a lean healthy body!

SO, what about FAT?

When you clean your diet up and start playing around with your macronutrients, protein and carbs get the most attention. Not surprising since protein helps you

build lean muscle and restricting carbs by eating the right types of foods helps you burn fat and lose weight.

Well for starters fat provides the energy necessary to run all of your vital biochemical processes so you can live! Fat boosts your immune system to protect you from harmful diseases and it provides structural integrity so you can have healthy joints, skin, hair and nails. And when you're on a lower carb diet, consuming ample amounts of fat satisfies your hunger and keeps you from feeling deprived. Needless to say, fat is super important. And getting enough fat in your diet is key to a healthy, strong and lean body!

You probably already know that eating foods like nuts (exception of peanuts) and seeds provide you with good healthy fats. And they do...but some people can't tolerate them due to allergies, and they're also relatively high in Omega 6 fatty acids (inflammatory in nature) vs. Omega 3 fatty acids (anti-inflammatory in nature).

Which is why "coconuts" - that's right "coconuts" aren't just for piña coladas and scents of suntan lotions - have been my "go-to" source for healthy fats for some time now.

Now to explain the benefits of coconuts I must geek out and give you a little scientific background, so bear with me.

Dietary fats are composed of a chemical structure known as triglycerides.

Technically speaking triglycerides is a combination of glycerol and 3 fatty acid chains. Most naturally occurring dietary fats are made up of long fatty acid chains.

The length of these fatty acid chains dictate the way our body metabolizes fat. And this is where coconuts have a healthy

advantage.

Coconuts, unlike most naturally occurring dietary fats, are made up of medium chain fatty acids (not long chain fatty acids). The medium chain fatty acids actually act more like carbohydrates than fats, so they're more water soluble, easily digested and it's immediately utilized by liver for immediate energy use. Much like the way sugar is metabolized without the unwanted insulin spike, so you don't have to worry about unwanted fat deposits.

There's even been studies that indicate consuming coconuts can increase rate of fat burning and help prevent fat accumulation!

Talk about literally, eating fat to lose fat!

Coconuts are also one of the most stable forms of saturated fats, so it doesn't get oxidized very easily, which makes it great for cooking in high heat. Although olive oil is by far the most popular cooking oil, it can't handle high heat, so it's best to use olive oil for cooking with low to medium heat instead. Coconut oil is your best choice for cooking!

Lately coconuts have become somewhat trendy, but that's a

good thing because it means you can pick up coconut oil or other coconut products pretty much anywhere. Coconuts comes in many different forms, like coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut cream, coconut butter, coconut flakes, coconut chips...they even make coconut flour for people that want to bake gluten free.

The great thing is getting healthy fats has never been easier, so you have no excuse for not getting enough healthy fats in your diet. And if you're tired of eating nuts and seeds and want to try something different - next time you're picking up groceries - try coconuts.

The Gecko on the Wall The world of golf through the eyes of Calum McGregor My passion for following the royal and ancient sport was rewarded with yet another incredible month, with victories coming from not one, but three golfers who have ties to the Costa del Sol. After last month’s packed schedule of events, that included The Ryder Cup and two major Championships, you would be excused for thinking that this month could never be as exciting, but for a golfing addict who follows the progress of his friends

competing around the world, this month was equally if not more rewarding. The hugely televised European Tour thrilled us with The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, where the celebrities from around the world teamed up to play alongside the greatest golfers in Europe. It was nice to see Danny Willett team up with his caddie and together they went on to win the doubles category while Tyrell Hatton shot a very impressive total

of -23 to win the €700 000 winners pay cheque. The following week the tour headed to The Grove in Hertfordshire for the British Masters event hosted by Luke Donald. As an avid spectator of the game I was thrilled to see the inaugural Hero Challenge take place the day before the tournament. Flames, floodlights and a Frenchman called Levy. Bringing fun into the game is not only great for the spectators but it is also great for the players and the future of Golf. In-form Swede Alex Noren was crowned the British Master that week with a -18 end score.

Padraig Harrington rolled back the years and picked up a victory at The Portuguese Open, pipping the defending champion Andy Sullivan by one shot. How amazing is it to see someone, who won their first professional event on The Gecko Tour four seasons ago, now playing in the Ryder Cup and Defending titles with such fortitude.

Meanwhile on The Challenge Tour I was thrilled to see my friend and former boss Johan Edfors pick up another trophy at Monterosi Rome. Johan is now a three time European Tour champion and a four time Challenge Tour winner.

Spain’s Jordi Garcia Pinto came in second only three shots behind

Johan and two of my friends who practise here in the winter, “The silent Assassin” Anton Karlson and Scotman David Law were tied in fifteenth.

A week later my boys dazzled again in China at The Hainan Open. Spain’s Pep Angles came in second, two shots behind the leader and I was thrilled to see the top ten at the end of the tournament. Anton Karlsson, my “Silent Assassin” is making a name for himself in his first season on The Challenge tour and claimed another top ten, finishing in 4th place. Just behind him were two golfers that featured in my meet the local’s page a few months ago. Marcus Kinhult (SWE) and Ross Kellett (SCO) both making it into the top ten and earning much needed points on the road to Oman.

I was also thrilled to see that Matt Webb (ENG) won the UK assistants championship, earning himself a place to play in the Australian futures Championship. Travelling to Australia for the tournament Matt incredibly won it with a five shot cushion and picked up the $11 000.00 winner’s cheque.

To cap off the month, yet another one of my really good friends and a local Casares resident during the winter, Ondrej Lieser, won the

Prague City Golf Open. With an incredible final day round of nine under par. Ondrej claimed victory and the €8000.00 winner’s cheque in the Czech Republic. Closer to home it was also a pleasure to see my good friend and winter neighbour, Rob Brazill, competing live at the Sotogrande Young talents trophy. Rob who hails from County Kildare in Ireland, spends his winter residing in Casares.

Unfortunately not allowed to caddie for him, I watched from the ropes as Rob went head to head against Andalucia’s number one amateur, Angel Hildalgo and Finnish ace Perre Papunen.

Who says golf is boring?

La Canada Golf Club in Sotogrande will host the first two day tournament on the 2016/17 Gecko Tour schedule. November 14th & 15th will see young players from across Europe start their campaign to be crowned the Gecko Tour Order of Merit winner, come March next year. Professional golfers from around the world come to the Costa del Sol for the winter months, in order to prepare for their following summer seasons. When the rest of Europe shuts down for golf, The Gecko Tour provides players with a competitive professional winter tour in the temperate climate of Southern Spain. A special opening event will take place at the only flood light course on the coast, La Dama de Noche, just outside Puerto Banus on Friday 11th.

Resident readers will be pleased to know that we will be doing a special Gecko Tour section each month with tournament results and behind the ropes reporting, that will include player interviews and anecdotes.

Numerosos famosos se dieron cita en Estepona Golf Club para el día de golf Global Gift y la Cena de Gala con María Bravo y Ronan Keating Este mes he tenido la enorme suerte de participar en uno de los principales actos del calendario de golf local, El Desafío Solidario. El evento se celebró en el Estepona Glof Club, donde Ronan Keeting jugó junto con el Campeón del Open US 2005 Michael Campbell. Otros famosos que participaron fueron el actor de Cold Feet James Nesbitt, el futbolista irlandés Stephen Hunt y el campeón español de golf Ángel Hidalgo. La Costa de Sol hizo de nuevo honor a su nombre y ofreció a los jugadores un clima perfecto para jugar. El día comenzó a las 8:00 horas en la casa club de Estepona Golf con una recepción, un desayuno ligero y smoothies de fruta fresca.

Acompañados por los invitados famosos, todos los jugadores socializaron y se presentaron, todo ello acompañado con la fantástica hospitalidad de los miembros del personal del club.

El juego comenzó a las 9:30 horas con un campo lleno con más de 70 jugadores que competían individualmente mientras conducían los nuevos buggies EZ-GO del club. El

fantástico campo de golf y las perfectas condiciones de juego, junto con el divertido y amable personal hicieron que el día fuera una delicia para todos. La Sala amablemente patrocinó la cabaña situada a medio camino, entre olivos, detrás del Green 11, de forma que los jugadores pudieron disfrutar de champán, vino e incluso algún gintonic mientras recorrían el campo.

Tras el torneo, todo el mundo, incluyendo la prensa, disfrutó de una deliciosa y bien merecida barbacoa, preparada por el restaurante Tango de Puerto Banús. Se celebró una rifa solidaria y entrega de premios en el club, donde se recaudó dinero para The Global Gift Foundation, la Fundación Cudeca y The Marie Keating Foundation. Los ganadores se llevaron fantásticos premios, desde material deportivo de Nike hasta el uso de un Porsche nuevo durante el fin de semana, todo mientras la prensa nacional e internacional entrevistaba y fotografiaba a los famosos.

Cuando todos hubieron comido y bebido, Ronan Keating se subió al escenario para presentar

los premios de este año a los jugadores ganadores.

Los premios incluyeron una bolsa Pwakaddy (gracias a Powakaddy Españ), zapatos Nike Golf y putters Nike. También se entregaron otros premios como

el “desafío gana al profesional” conducido por el entrenador profesional de la Gecko Tour Academy Mark Macrae. Con la ayuda de voluntarios locales y el siempre atento personal de Estepona Golf, la tarde fue un

disfrute para todos, y se está planeando convertir este evento en un evento anual.

Una noche de recaudación de fondos con las estrellas Esa misma noche, el Hotel Gran Meliá Don Pepe agasajó a los famosos y a los asistentes con un coctel de champán con deliciosos canapés. Jamones Popi le dio el toque español con sus platos de queso y jamón.

Tras el coctel, vino la alfombra roja, donde la belleza y el talento iban de la mano. Entre las asistentes, famosas como María Bravo, Alesha Dixon, Ashley James, Olivia Cox, Storm Keating, Melissa Nkonda y Laura Hamilton. María Bravo y Ronan Keating hablaron sobre sus fundaciones y por qué se han unido para hacer que este sueño sea una realidad. Ronan dijo “que él y su mujer admiraban profundamente el trabajo que María ha estado haciendo durante todos estos años con dedicación, perseverancia y compromiso social”. María también dijo que “Ronan no solo es un gran artista al que todo el mundo admira, sino que también es un ser humano extraordinario”.

Ambos eventos tuvieron el apoyo institucional del Alcalde de Estepona, José María Urbano y el Alcalde de Marbella, José Bernal, que dijo en le conferencia de prensa celebrada el 20 de

septiembre para presentar el evento: “La política es esto, la unión de personas de diferentes ideologías que unen fuerzas para hacer el bien común”. La cantante y Global Gifter, Melissa Nkonda puso a todo el mundo en pie con su potente y energética actuación.

Ronan Keating añadió el toque final a la noche interpretando algunos de sus grandes éxitos, incluyendo la famosa canción “When you say nothing at all”, de la película Notting Hill de 1999, interpretada por Julia Roberts y Hugh Grant. Y como dijo antes de interpretar esta canción “esta canción lo cambió todo”. Actualmente, Ronan es el cantante irlandés más conocido internacionalmente, con diez álbumes en el mercado y varias recopilaciones, que han vendido más de 25 millones de copias en todo el mundo. Keating también es un miembro activo de la Global Gift Foundation. Es socialmente consciente y el fundador de la Marie Keating Foundation, en honor a su madre, que falleció de cáncer a la edad de 51 años.

Para mí fue un honor representar al periódico The Resident junto a la residente de Sabinillas María del Carmen Olivia esa noche, junto

a otros invitados que incluían el campeón del US Open 2005 Michael Campbell y el Equipo de Dirección del Estepona Golf, Rory Leader (Presidente) y Jason Callow (Director).

Los 200 asistentes disfrutaron de una Subasta en Vivo con algunos lotes realmente espectaculares, incluyendo una entrada de último minuto de James Nesbitt para vivir una experiencia Cold Feet, y conocer y almorzar con todo el elenco y aparecer como extra en un futuro episodio, que se vendió por 30.000 €. Enhorabuena a los ganadores. ¡Estamos deseando verte en el futuro próximo!

mí un gran honor participar.

La subasta consiguió más de 100.000 €, Ronan subió al escenario e interpretó algunos de sus clásicos como “When you say nothing at all” y “Life is a rollercoaster” para los 200 invitados, incluyendo estrellas como Alesha Dixon y Ashley James.

Enhorabuena a todos los que participaron y a los patrocinadores por hacer que ésta recogida de fondos fuera espectacular. Como prueba del éxito de estos eventos, me siento orgulloso de decir que he sido invitado a ayudar a organizar muchos más eventos futuros.

Celebrities gathered at Estepona GC for the Global Gift golf day and Gala Dinner with Maria bravo and Ronan Keating This month I was lucky enough to participate in one of the highlights on the local golfing calendar, The Solidarity Challenge. The event was hosted by the Estepona Golf Club, where Ronan Keating tee´d off alongside 2005 US Open Champion, Michael Campbell.

Other celebrities who participated in the fun included “Cold Feet” actor James Nesbitt, Irish footballer Stephen Hunt, and 2016 Spanish Golf Champion, Angel Hidalgo.

The Costa del Sol once again lived up to its name and provided the visiting players with perfect golfing conditions. The day started at 08.00 hrs in the Estepona Golf clubhouse with a reception, light breakfast and fresh fruit smoothies.

Accompanied by the celebrity guests, all the players mingled and introduced themselves while waking up to the superb hospitality of the Estepona staff.

A shotgun start commenced at 09.30 hrs with a field of over 70 players, competing in an individual stableford competition whilst driving Estepona’s brand new EZGO buggies. The fantastic golf course and perfect conditions, coupled with the fun and friendly Estepona staff made it a delight for everyone taking part. La Sala kindly sponsored the halfway hut cleverly nestled in between the

olive trees behind the 11th green so that the field of players could enjoy Champagne, wine and even a gin and tonic twice on their way round!

After the tournament, everyone, including the media, enjoyed a delicious and well deserved outdoor barbecue, kindly laid on

by Tango Restaurant in Puerto Banus. A Solidarity raffle and prize giving ceremony took place at the club, raising money for The Global Gift Foundation, Cudeca Foundation and The Marie Keating Foundation, where the winners took home fabulous prizes that ranged from Nike sports gear to the use of a brand new Porsche for the weekend, all whilst the celebrities were being photographed and interviewed by the local, national and international press.

With everyone fed and watered Ronan Keating took to the stage to present this year’s prizes to the winning players. Prizes for the event included a Powakaddy tour bag (special thanks to Powakaddy Espana), Nike Golf Shoes and Nike Putters. There was also a number of spot prizes including the prize for the “beat the pro challenge” conducted by the Gecko Tour Academy head coach and teaching pro, Mark Macrae. With

the help of the local volunteers and the ever attentive Estepona GC staff members the afternoon was

A night of fundraising with the stars On this evening, Hotel Gran Meliá Don Pepe served celebrities and attendees to a champagne cocktail and delicious canapes. Popi Hams, gave the Spanish touch with their plates of cheese and ham. The cocktails gave way to the red carpet where beauty and talent went hand in hand. In attendance were female celebrities like María Bravo, Alesha Dixon, Ashley James, Olivia Cox, Storm Keating, Melissa Nkonda and Laura Hamilton who also compered the event. Maria Bravo and Ronan Keating talked about their foundations and why they have joined forces to make this dream a reality with Ronan saying “That both him & his wife had deeply admired the work that Maria has been doing all these years with dedication, perseverance and social commitment”. Maria also said that “Ronan was not only the renowned artist that everyone admires, but also an extraordinary human being”.

Both events have also had the institutional support from the Mayor of Estepona, Jose Maria Garcia Urbano and the Marbella Mayor, Jose Bernal, who said at the press conference held on September 20th presenting the event: "Politics is this: the union of people of different ideologies joining forces for common good”.

Singer and Global Gifter, Melissa Nkonda, had all attendees on their feet with her powerful and energetic performance. Ronan Keating added the final touch of the evening playing some of his

greatest hits, including the famous song “When you say nothing at all”, from the film Notting Hill in 1999, played by Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant; and as he said before singing it ‘this song changed everything’. Nowadays, Ronan is the most internationally famous Irish Singer with ten albums on the market and several compilations, which have sold over 25 million copies worldwide. Keating is also an active member of the Global Gift Foundation. He is socially conscientious and the founder of the Marie Keating Foundation, in honour of his mother who died of cancer at the age of 51.

I was honoured to represent The Resident Newspaper alongside local Sabanillas resident Maricarmen Olivia at the evening event alongside other guests that included 2005 open champion Micheal Cambell and the Estepona Golf Management Team, Rory Leader (President) and Jason Callow (Managing Director).

The 200 attendees enjoyed a Live Auction with some truly spectacular Lots including James Nesbitt’s last minute entry of a Cold Feet experience to meet and have lunch with the entire cast and feature as extra’s in a future episode which sold for €30,000. Congratulations to the winners, we look forward to watching you in the near future!

It was an incredible event to be a part of and after the charity Auction that raised over € 100 000, Ronan took to the stage and sang classics such as ‘When you say nothing at all” and “Life is a rollercoaster” to the 200 guests including guest stars Alesha Dixon and Ashley James!

Congratulations to everyone that took part and associated sponsors for making this such a truly inspirational fundraising spectacular. As a testament to the events success I am honoured to have been invited to assist in the organising of many more future events.

Sotogrande International Young Talents trophy, hosted at the magnificent La Reserva Golf Club de Sotogrande Thursday 27th October sparked the start of one of the leading Junior Amateur tournaments in Europe, the WAGR Sotogrande International Young Talents trophy, hosted at the magnificent La Reserva Golf Club de Sotogrande.

The opening ceremony kicked the tournament off in grace and style with participants and their family and friends being treated to a BBQ buffet of the highest quality, along with an evening filled with fun activities, including a Q&A with European Tour Winner Alvaro Quiros, Skills Challenges, Pop Quizzes and an introduction to many about the Brand New, exciting ACES program (Academic Centres of Excellence in Sport) being run in partnership by the “Jason Floyd Golf Academy”, “Sotogrande International School” and “Athletes USA”, providing a “Pathway” for talented sports people to achieve excellence in both Sport and Education by gaining scholarships to Universities in America.

The tournament, taking place from the 28th-30th October had a true international feel, with over 20 different countries being represented. With the age range being between 9 and 23, the tournament executed its goal of providing a European Tour

Experience to Junior Golfers young and old, an opportunity many will never forget.

In blustery conditions, the course proved to be a very tough test over all 3 days, with some high scores being posted.

The run away winner in the U25 Ladies category was Austrian superstar Hannah Mitterberger, who went into the final round with a 9 shot lead! Eventually winning by 6 shots with a fanatic final score of +12 for the 3 days.

The U25 mens category, however, turned out to be much more of a dog fight, with 3 players within

touching distance of the trophy entering the final round.

Finnish ace Perre Papunen (-1) held a one shot lead over Andalusian #1 Angel Hidalgo (Par) with Ireland’s massive hitting Rob Brazill from County Kildare only 5 shots back.

Papunen and Hidalgo’s ball control and consistency was off the charts given the wind conditions. Without the other two players dropping shots Rob was forced to play aggressively and pushing too hard for birdies, Rob’s efforts sadly fell away after a very Valiant fight, turning the title into a two horse race coming down the final back nine.

With the wind being a constant factor, Hidalgo was always going to be tough to beat with his exceptional ability to flight the ball, but despite all his efforts, Papunen was up for the challenge and managed to hold on to win by 3 strokes, with a final score of level par.

With some young, seriously talented golfers on show, the Sotogrande International Young Talents Trophy certainly lived up to its name and combined with being hosted at a top 100 European Golf Course, that is La Reserva de Sotogrande, the tournament is a must, for those looking to enter an event run to the highest quality, replicating the experience of being a Touring Professional.

Manilva Table Tennis Club The Resident is proud to be sponsoring the Manilva Table Table Tennis Club. Table Tennis is now another activity available for local residents to enjoy, with the formation of the Manilva Table Tennis Club. Founded by John Ullger with the aim of providing an opportunity for those wishing to practice or take up the sport from scratch to do so locally.

The club meets at the Sabinillas sportshall every Tuesday between

7 pm and 9 pm and currently has two tables, which will be increasing very shortly to five.

John is an experienced coach so don’t worry if you’ve never played as he will soon have up and running.

Manilva Netball Club go from strength to strength

Manilva Netball Club have now been going for 6 years. They are a group of local ladies that love playing this wonderful game, and would welcome into the club anyone who has played before, or would like to learn to play. They have Spanish speakers, so if there are Spanish or other nationalities that would like to give netball a try, join them at training on Tuesday nights from 6.30 - 8 pm, at Las Viñas Sports Centre, Manilva.

The cost is €3 for adults and €2 for students. The first session free so

go and give them a try.

The season is from the end of January until the end of May, then from mid September until early December.

On an almost monthly basis there is a tournament, either played here in Manilva, or at Laude School, in San Pedro which gives them match practice.

Don't worry if you haven't played for years, it's all about meeting new people and having fun.

The Resident sports correspondent Calum McGregor completes his third book Local resident Calum McGregor who also writes for the Resident newspaper, has completed his third book in the “Rock Hard Caddie” series. Touching Distance from Africa is the story of a South African golfer who moves to Casares with a suitcase of clothes and a head full of dreams. Desperate to make Andalucía feel like home, he

immerses himself into the Spanish cultures and traditions, comparing his new life to the one he used to live in his beloved South Africa.

Calum has wrote his innermost feelings and emotions down in a breath-taking rollercoaster ride that is his pursuit to find love in his new home country.

I had never seen one of these creatures in the flesh, but I had seen the famous outline of the animal in the huge black metal replicas dotted around the landscape, visible when driving on the motorways, proudly displayed as the symbol of Spain. Today I was going to see more than one, in fact six in total and more than likely they were going to show me their flesh along with their blood as they died in front of me. The Corrida de Torres, as I now thought I had learned enough to call it by its proper name, literally means the running of the bulls. It is the name attached specifically to a traditional Spanish bullfight carried out under the current regulations.

Most usually with the killing of two bulls each by three fully fledged matadors.

I obviously had an idea about what I was going to witness as I had watched a few clips on You Tube and read about it for the last two days. But I was wrong. To be honest I didn’t. When Hemmingway said “You can’t describe a bullfight until you have been to one” he was correct and only afterwards did I know what he meant. I was not prepared for what was about to happen to me. I was not prepared for the feelings and emotions I was about to go through and witness from others. Some may surprise you and others will sicken and disgust you. Some are even going to amaze and bewilder you. I hope to bring you so close to it because I think contrary to Mr. Hemingway, I am going to write this in such graphic detail that you, my reader will be able to describe a corrida to anyone you wish too when I am done with it. After what seemed like a few minutes the first bull came running out, released from his cage into a completely foreign landscape of a red dirt floor marked with two concentric lime circles. This empty confinement surrounded by a shoulder high wooden wall.

Remember this is the first time in two years or so that he has been removed from his herd, taken away in a truck and now released into this butchers’ ring that surrounded him, the stress levels on the animal were visible from the moment I clapped eyes on this majestic beast.

Pounding the floor with its hooves and tossing its massive horns at the very sight of any movement.

Its Muscles honed like that of Mike Tyson in his prime, flexing and bulging underneath a shiny black

coat that glistened in the sun. He was pissed off and ran around the ring going for everything. It came running towards us and for a second I thought it was going to jump the ring wall but it was distracted by a matador’s assistant who banged his hand hard on the barrier, making the bull charge at it. With a swipe of the head the bull’s horns smashed into the wooden barrier, sending splinters flying in the air. The crowd let out a collective sigh at the demonstration of brute power and for a few minutes the bull ran around the ring, ruling it with a display of sheer magnificence and grandeur. Juan Bautista from France strode out to meet him, man versus beast.

With a few shouts and taunts he got the bulls attention. It started to smack its hoof into the red dust on the ground that shot up in clouds around its legs. The dust gave the sun’s rays a hazy smoky air to travel through and the cool shadow of the stadium wall covered my shoulders, this was a natural theatre and nature was providing the smoke and spotlights. “Hey, Hey.. “ The shrill aggressive shouts at the bull echoed around the now

half empty stadium and spurned the bull into its charge. Slamming his horns loudly into the cape with a sound of beating a carpet with a stick, tearing it right out of the matadors hand and throwing it out into the side of the ring as he stood exposed in the center. The bull turned and faced him for a millisecond before charging at him again and with a dive to the side he rolled to relative safety when the other matadors arrived and waved their cloaks like clowns at a rodeo. I picked my jaw up off the floor and stared scanning the bullfighter for telltale injuries like I would at a rugby match. Just like watching the Springboks from the grandstand, seeing Schalk burger in a crunching tackle. There was no limp but then after the second step I spotted it, it was a slight limp, and again with the other step, he was injured. When he turned to face me I could see him showing something to the other matadors that had distracted the bull while he retreated to the bull ring wall.

The bull started to run around the empty ring again and I couldn’t help but think you nearly got him boy.
