Bienvenido a la edición de octubre de The Resident, normalmente es en esta época del año cuando escribiría sobre cómo nos despedimos del verano y todo eso, pero en realidad aun no lo hemos hecho, ¿verdad? Aunque debo admitir que el edredón ha salido del armario en el último día o dos. Aún así, realmente necesitamos algo de lluvia, ¿no? Como muchos de vosotros sabeis, The Resident está estrechamente relacionado con la Sociedad Benéfica de San Jorge, y como tal promueve y publicita las actividades de la caridad. Dicho esto, The Resident también publicita felizmente el trabajo de muchas otras organizaciones benéficas locales, así que no olvide que estamos más que dispuestos a publicar sus eventos siempre que el espacio lo permita, así que envíen sus artículos directamente a mí, el editor, a editor@ theresident .UE. Siempre hay un evento que anuncia el final del verano, sea cual sea el clima, es el final del horario de verano, o “perder el tiempo con los malditos relojes”, como diría la Sra. Ed. Although I must admit to breaking out the duvet in the last day or two. Still, we really could do with some rain, couldn’t we? As many of you may know, The Resident is closely tied to the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George, and as such promotes and publicises the activities of the St George Charity. Having said that, The Resident also happily publicises the work of many other local charities, so don’t forget we’re more than happy to publish your events providing space allows, so send your items to me, the editor, at editor@ theresident.eu. There is always one event that heralds the end of summer, whatever the weather, is the end of daylight saving, or “messing around with the damn clocks” as Mrs Ed would put it. Well, thanks to EU legislation, that will soon be a thing of the past when in 2021 daylight saving will be scrapped and there will be no more adjustment of the clocks! El Ayuntamiento de Casares programada un otoño cargado de actividades culturales Las actividades comienzan esta tarde (miércoles, 9 de octubre) con la proyección de los cortometrajes “Los Esmayaos» y «Los Abusones” realizados en el taller de cine de la Asociación Los Castillejos para el apoyo a las altas capacidades de la Costa del sol y el Campo de Gibraltar. Además, en este mes de octubre destaca la celebración de las III Jornadas de Recoveras, los días 25 y26 de octubre, con la Conferencia de Juan José Téllez “Recoveras, matuteras y otras supervivientes de la posguerra española” y la ruta de Gibraltar a Casares. El mes de noviembre llega cargado de actividades. Comienza con el IV Encuentro de dibujantes en Casares, previsto para el fin de semana del 2 y 3 de noviembre. Al siguiente sábado, el 9 de noviembre se celebra las VI Jornadas Educativas CEIP Blas Infante. Las actividades continúan con
la obra de teatro “Un mundo sin ceros» de Gastón Quiroga, interpretada por el Grupo Juvenil de la Escuela Municipal de Teatro, el viernes 15 de noviembre en el Centro Cultural Blas Infante. Y para finalizar el mes, el III Concurso de Monólogos y Comedia de Casares que se celebra el 30 de noviembre en Centro Cultural Blas Infante, en esta ocasión presentado por “Txapela de Cádiz”. La guía incluye en el mes de diciembre algunas actividades navideñas, como el Belén Viviente, previsto para el 20 de diciembre. Y el I Festival de Aficionados Flamencos de Casares, con los artistas locales Javier Pineda “Potajito”, Diego Reyes, “Niño de Montecoto”, “El Maestro”, “Tomatito de Casares”, Sebastián Narváez, Miguel A. Rubio, Iván García, y cuya celebración está programada para el 28 de diciembre en el edificio municipal de calle Camachas.

Casares celebra las III Jornadas de Recoveras los días 25 y 26 de octubre Dentro de su programación cultural de otoño el Ayuntamiento de Casares dedica el fin de semana del 25 y 26 de octubre a recuperar la memoria de las recoveras: mujeres en su mayoría madres de familia, viudas o esposas de represaliados de la Guerra Civil, que para sobrevivir se veían obligadas a hacer la recova, que no era más que aprovechar la noche para bajar productos de la sierra hasta la frontera de Gibraltar donde los vendían o los cambiaban por tabaco o por alimentos que escaseaban en el franquismo, como chocolate, café o azúcar. Las terceras jornadas dedicadas a las Recoveras vuelven a incluir la ruta de senderismo que rememora el recorrido a pie que hacían estas mujeres desde sus pueblos, entre ellos Casares, a la frontera de Gibraltar. En esta edición se ha invertido el recorrido para partir desde Gibraltar y finalizar la ruta en Casares. Desde hoy, 7 de octubre, hasta el día 20
está abierto el plazo para inscribirse en esta ruta que puede hacerse en su recorrido completo de 49 kilómetros, o alguno/s de los tramos previstos: de Gibraltar hasta San Roque, de San Roque a Secadero, y de Secadero a Casares. El Ayuntamiento de Casares dispondrá un servicio de autobús para llevar y traer a los participantes desde final e inicio de cada uno de los tramos, lo que deberá especificarse en la hoja de inscripción.
«Recoveras, matuteras y otras supervivientes de la posguerra española» La Ruta de las Recoveras se completa con una sesión didáctica, el viernes 25 de octubre, a las 19.00 horas, en el edificio municipal de calle Camachas, en la que intervendrá el periodista, e investigador sobre las recoveras, Juan José Téllez, con la conferencia titulada «Recoveras, matuteras y otras supervivientes de la posguerra española». Un ponencia que está precedida por una exposición de los resultados del taller «El legado de las Recoveras» realizado por el alumnado de 5º y 6º del CEIP Blas Infante durante la mañana. Las inscripciones para la ruta son gratuitas para los adscritos a la Federación de Senderismo y tiene un coste de 4 euros para no federados que serán para gastos del seguro. Pueden realizarse en la Casa Natal de Blas Infante o a través del correo electrónico turismo@casares.es presentando justificante de pago en la cuenta del Ayuntamiento de Casares: 3058 0773 41 2810829298 o adjuntado licencia federativa de senderismo. Mancomunidad prepara el sellado de un nuevo vertedero en la Planta de RSU de Casares «Complejo Medioambiental de la Costa del Sol» La Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental aprobó la pasada semana en su Asamblea General dedicar casi tres millones de euros provenientes del remanente de tesorería del ejercicio anterior a financiar diferentes inversiones en la comarca. Una cantidad que en su mayor parte se va a destinar al Complejo Medioambiental de la Costa del Sol situado en Casares. Según concreta Juan Luis Villalón, que además de teniente de alcalde Casares es delegado de Residuos de esta Mancomunidad de Municipios, a través de este plan de inversiones se va a financiar el sellado de un vertedero, unos trabajos presupuestados en 2.430.243 euros y que va a suponer la eliminación de olores y paliar las molestias que genera esta planta de RSU, como fue el compromiso
adquirido con los vecinos de la zona. Este proyecto de sellado de vertederos está enmarcado en el plan de mejoras que la Mancomunidad y los responsables del Complejo Medioambiental de Los Pedregales se comprometieron en noviembre del pasado año durante la reunión mantenida con el alcalde, Pepe Carrasco, y el teniente de alcalde, Juan Luis Villalón, y los vecinos de la zona que se habían quejado de las molestias y olores causados por la planta de residuos. El sellado de vertederos de residuos tiene como objeto la eliminación de gases a la atmósfera y evitar la posible contaminación del entorno mediante al aislamiento definitivo de los residuos, imposibilitando filtración de lixiviados contaminantes del suelo.

religión, etc. Por ello, los participantes deberán entregar una grabación o enlace web con la actuación a interpretar. Los concursantes seleccionados realizarán sus actuaciones el día del concurso, el sábado 30 de noviembre de 2019, en una gala que comenzará a las 22:30h en el Centro Cultural Blas Infante de Casares y que terminará con la lectura del fallo del jurado y la entrega de premios. El Ayuntamiento de Casares destina a este concurso de humor dos premios de 600 y 200 euros que otorgará el jurado compuesto por tres miembros designados por la Concejalía de Cultura, con experiencia en el campo de las artes escénicas y el mundo de la Cultura.

El artista Juan Santamaría vuelve al Centro Cultural Padre Manuel con el concierto de cantares ibéricos ‘Fado, coplas y otros cantares

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa de que el artista onubense Juan Santamaría presentará el próximo viernes 25 de octubre, a las 20:30 horas, en el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel, el concierto de Cantares Ibéricos “Fado, coplas y otros cantares”, en el que interpretará los temas más conocidos del folclore de España y de Portugal (fados, coplas, tangos, boleros...), incluyendo temas de Amália Rodrigues y Carlos Cano, además de poetas como Lorca, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Alberti y Machado. Nacido en Ayamonte, Huelva, Juan Santamaría comenzó su carrera musical en Portugal, debutando en el Coliseo de Oporto con un repertorio de canción popular y fado, siendo el primer intérprete no luso en afrontar el folklore más puro del país vecino, obteniendo el reconocimiento del público, además de fusionar el fado con el flamenco. Después de actuar en las más prestigiosas salas y en diferentes programas y emisoras de la televisión portuguesa, así como en distintos espacios de nuestro país, cumplidos diez años de su carrera inició una gira por toda la península, que concluyó con un concierto en la catedral de Sevilla junto a la banda de “La Cigarrera”, presidido por el Cardenal de esa ciudad. El Ayuntamiento colabora con el ciclista adaptado Alejandro Navarro en su nuevo reto benéfico de subida a Peñas Blancas El alcalde, José María García Urbano, y el ciclista adaptado, Alejandro Navarro,han presentado hoy el ‘II Reto: Ponte en Marcha con Alejandro’ que se celebrará el 27 de octubre con la colaboración del Ayuntamiento de Estepona. El primer edil ha valorado el gran esfuerzo que está llevando a cabo este deportista que padece una lesión cervical de grado 5 debido a un accidente doméstico y ha destacado su espíritu de superación que le ha llevado a conseguir reconocimientos importantes en el ciclismo adaptado. En ese sentido, ha
recordado que Alejandro Navarro fue Campeón de España en dos pruebas en la temporada 2017, y primero en la Copa de España en seis ocasiones, dos en 2016 y cuatro en 2017, valiéndole estos últimos para ser subcampeón de España absoluto. García Urbano ha explicado que Alejandro se ha impuesto un nuevo desafío como es recorrer en su handbike una distancia aproximada de 14,5 kilómetros de subida al puerto de Peñas Blancas, “un recorrido extremo y complicado por su pendiente”. El alcalde ha valorado el carácter
benéfico de esta iniciativa que recaudará fondos que se destinarán a la asociación sin ánimo de lucro Alejandro Navarro, por lo que ha animado a los ciudadanos a apoyar a este deportista realizando con él este recorrido, caminando o en bicicleta. La organización ha previsto tres salidas con el objetivo de que los distintos grupos se unan durante el recorrido para que al final todos lleguen juntos a la meta. Así, la primera salida la protagonizarán Alejandro Navarro y su equipo a las 08.00 horas, a las 09.00 horas saldrán las personas que realicen el reto caminando y a las 11.00 horas se sumarán los ciclistas. Por su parte, Alejandro Navarro ha reconocido que la subida a Peñas Blancas es uno de sus retos más complicados, y ha expresado su ilusión por hacerlo realidad acompañado de todas las personas que deseen apoyarlo. Así, ha informado que en el recorrido podrán participar los mayores de 15 años o bien los que los cumplan durante el año en curso, teniendo en cuenta que los menores de 18 años deberán presentar una autorización firmada por el tutor legal. The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, and the adapted cyclist, Alejandro Navarro, today presented the ‘II Challenge: Get going with Alejandro’ to be held on October 27 with the collaboration of the Estepona council. The mayor praises the great effort that is being carried out by this athlete who suffered a cervical injury of grade 5 due to a domestic accident and has highlighted his spirit in overcoming his disability that has led him to get important recognition in adapted cycling. amplía un pasaje en el casco antiguo para conectar las calles Lozano y Extremadura El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa que está realizando obras para la ampliación y embellecimiento del pasaje ‘Antonio Ortega Vela’, que conecta las calles Lozano y Extremadura. La teniente alcalde del área de Fomento, Infraestructuras y Turismo (FIT), Ana Velasco, ha explicado que esta zona ha
podido incrementar su superficie tras integrar un solar anexo. El Consistorio alcanzó un acuerdo con el propietario de la parcela colindante, lo que ha permitido que el pasaje alcance ahora los 275 metros cuadrados. De esta manera, los ciudadanos pueden disfrutar de más espacio en este pasaje que fue creado hace
tres años por el Ayuntamiento dentro del proyecto ‘Estepona, Jardín de la Costa del Sol’. Los trabajos de ampliación que se están ultimando han consistido en pavimentar la parcela anexa con el mismo hormigón impreso color albero que existía en el pasaje Antonio Ortega Vela. Además, se están ejecutando labores de jardinería, colocando nuevas macetas e instalando alumbrado público y nuevo mobiliario urbano, según ha indicado Velasco. La plaza, que cuenta con una fuente en el centro, también dispone de un antiguo pozo mediano que se recuperó con la primera obra. Ahora se ha podido reconstruir por completo, lo que supone reforzar el tipismo andaluz en este rincón del centro histórico.

Tres grandes proyectos para el Castillo y Sabinillas
El área de Urbanizaciones se reúne con los vecinos
El Ayuntamiento de Manilva, representado por el alcalde, Mario Jiménez y el concejal de Urbanismo, Marcos Ruiz, continúa con el inicio de proyectos que den solución y mejoren las infraestructuras del término municipal. Tres importantes asuntos fueron tratados con el Jefe de la demarcación de Costas, Ángel González y el técnico Jesús Santos, los cuales son prioritarios para el Equipo de Gobierno: la regeneración de las playas del Castillo, la legalización y remodelación del tramo que comprende la zona entre el Burger King y el nuevo recorrido de paseo marítimo entre la Colonia y Arroyo de la Peñuela. El primero de los asuntos, la regeneración de las playas del Castillo,se volvió a trasladar la necesidad de colocar un arrecife natural, que permitiría la regeneración de más de 10.000 metros cuadrados de playa urbana frente al Monumento Fortaleza del Castillo. Además, implicaría retirar el muro de gran impacto visual y medioambiental, que significan las escolleras, y, sobre

Regarding the new section of the promenade, it will be integrated into the Malaga coastal path, which will expand and improve one of the routes most travelled by locals and visitors. In order to expand the parking possibilities in Sabinillas, an administrative concession has been requested for the concession of an underground car park in the La Colonia area. This meeting has been described by municipal officials as very productive and confirms the good harmony between the administrations, with the main objective being the good of Manilva.
The Councillor for Urbanizations, Laura López, is holding a series of meetings with the presidents of local urbanizations and communities of owners, as well as with community administrators, in order to address the needs of residents who live outside of the municipality’s urban centres, in the different residential complexes throughout the municipality, that through the years have felt neglected by the administration. Councillor López said that she intends to improve services and will base her work within this area on three
essential points, the improvement of public safety, the lighting of the roads and a biweekly cleaning plan. It is also the aim to limit the life of urban entities to 10 years, one of the number of objectives that will be developed over the months. It should be remembered that the mentioned delegation, located in the Sabinillas Multiple Uses building, was created at the beginning of this legislature in order to listen to the residents in these suburbs who will have a point of reference in the Town Hall.

Cursos de Español e Inglés Desde la Delegación de Extranjeros Residentes del Ayuntamiento de Manilva, cuya responsable es Laura López, se recuerda a la ciudadanía que, todos aquellos interesados, podrán inscribirse en los cursos de español e inglés que se organizan con Aula 47. De esta manera, quienes quieran aprender español con la profesora Olga Ruiz pueden acudir a clase los lunes y miércoles de once y media a doce y media de la mañana, para el nivel A2; los martes y jueves de diez a once de la mañana se imparte
el nivel B1, de once a doce y cuarto, el B2, mientras que el nivel inicial A1 es de doce y media a una y media de la tarde. En cuanto a los cursos de inglés, impartidos por Marga Ramírez, los inscritos al nivel inicial A1 deben acudir los lunes y miércoles de nueve y media a diez y media de la mañana, para el nivel A2 el horario es de diez y media a once y media de la mañana, el nivel B1 se imparte de once y media a doce y media y de doce y media a una y media de la tarde es el nivel B2. El precio para los empadronados es de 45 euros al mes mientras que los no empadronados deben abonar 55 euros al mes. Ante un numeroso público congregado en el Monumento de El Castillo de la Duquesa, se dio a conocer el viernes el amplio programa diseñado para esta temporada por parte de la Delegación de Residentes Extranjeros, cuya responsable es Laura López. Además de la citada edil, acudieron a este evento el alcalde de Manilva, Mario Jiménez, el primer teniente de alcalde, Diego José Jiménez y los concejales Francisco Becerra, Manolo Gil, Alba Jiménez y Eva Galindo. Los presentes pudieron conocer la nueva agenda para la temporada que cuenta con numerosas novedades, entre las que cabe destacar la nueva edición del Encuentro Internacional, que durará una semana, concretamente se llevará a cabo del 11 al 16 de mayo de 2020. Los asistentes pudieron disfrutar durante
la velada de un aperitivo y de las actuaciones de las alumnas de la Escuela Municipal de Música de Manilva y de la cantante Valeria Hernández. Por otra parte, el sábado también se llevó a cabo el Oktoberfest en la Plaza de los Naranjos en Sabinillas. Esta cita contó con la implicación de numerosos establecimientos como O’Callaghans, Jameson Spicy Indian Tapas, Cathy’s Clown, Pizza Tito, McGuinness’ The Irish Bar y Mayur Indian Restaurant. En esta jornada los asistentes pudieron disfrutar con las actuaciones del Dj Steve Goodey y Thrifty Malone. López ha informado que se podrán realizar denuncias o demandas sobre incendios, fugas de agua, animales en peligro, residuos peligrosos, escombreras, basura, daños a los espacios públicos (como parques, jardines o mobiliario urbano), talas, medusas, varamientos de especies marinas o cualquier acción que atente contra la salud pública y ambiental. Esta delegación puede intervenir en todo tipo de situaciones provocadas por accidentes inesperados, coordinando soluciones con otros organismos. Cabe recordar que la concejalía cubre competencias en disciplina medioambiental, control, sanción y restablecimiento de la legali-
dad de actos que contravengan la normativa medioambiental y animal. Realiza la gestión administrativa de licencias de calificación ambiental y de planes de autoprotección contra incendios forestales, estando también a su cargo el registro municipal de animales y la tramitación de licencias de tenencia de animales peligrosos. En el ámbito de mayor sensibilización, es la encargada de la recogida de animales abandonados y del traslado a las instalaciones de ADANA, con quien mantiene un convenio de colaboración para cumplir con el compromiso de sacrificio cero, que se ha marcado López. Otro de los apartados en los que tiene competencia, es la vigilancia y recogida de animales protegidos marinos y terrestres.
También es responsable de la tramitación de autorizaciones relacionadas con el establecimiento de explotaciones ganaderas o realas, así como talas, podas, quemas, rozas o desbroces, encargándose además de la puesta en valor y mantenimiento de zonas medioambientales sensibles dentro de la localidad como el paseo de la Peñuela, Reserva Ecológica Playas de Manilva y Sendero Azul, siendo conscientes de la necesidad de impartir una educación real en este apartado con reforestaciones, organización de visitas guiadas o senderismo. It is also responsible for the processing of authorizations related to the establishment of livestock farms, as well as logging, pruning, burning or clearing, in addition to the enhancement and maintenance of sensitive environmental areas within the town such as the paseo de la Peñuela, The Manilva Ecological Reserve and Blue Trail, being aware of the need to provide a real education in this section with reforestation, organization of guided tours or hiking. Ayuntamiento y subdelegación del gobierno tratan asuntos de interés para el municipio El alcalde de Manilva, Mario Jiménez y el concejal de Infraestructura y Obras, Diego José Jiménez, se personaron en Málaga capital para mantener una interesante reunión con la Subdelegada del Gobierno, María Gámez, para tratar varios asuntos de interés para el municipio. Uno de los temas principales tratados, reunión a la que se unió Jesús Esteban, Coronel de la Comandancia de la Guardia Civil en Málaga, fue la insistencia por parte de los responsables municipales de que Manilva cuente con un puesto principal de la Guardia Civil. En este sentido, se trasladó una vez más al organismo supramunicipal, la necesidad que tiene nuestro municipio de contar con más efectivos de la benemérita con lo que ello supone para un mayor control y coordinación con la Policía Local. La respuesta de Gámez fue que es un tema prioritario y se seguirán dando los pasos necesarios para que sea una realidad en el menor
tiempo posible. También se trató la colocación de dos pasarelas a lo largo del término. Una que conectará la Paloma y Playa Paraíso y otra que lo hará con los Granados y los Hidalgos. Tanto el alcalde como el primer teniente de alcalde transmitieron la necesidad que tienen estas zonas del término de conectarse ya que la ciudadanía no tiene forma de transitar de un lado a otro sin el correspondiente peligro que supone hacerlo por la N-340. Como no, la regeneración de la playa del Castillo, también fue un tema fundamental puesto encima de la mesa. Es un objetivo prioritario del Equipo de Gobierno conseguir desbloquear este proyecto y que se solucione definitivamente este problema que data de los años 80. Un encuentro cordial y con muy buena sintonía donde ambas partes se mostraron predispuestas a llevar a cabo estas propuestas y a sacarlas adelante.
Town council and government subdelegation deal with matters of interest to the municipality The mayor of Manilva, Mario Jiménez and the Councillor for Infrastructure and Works, Diego José Jiménez, travelled to Málaga to hold an interesting meeting with the Government Subdelegate, María Gámez, to discuss various issues of interest to the municipality. One of the main topics discussed in a meeting joined by Jesús Esteban, Colonel of the Civil Guard Command in Malaga, was the insistence on the part of the Manilva representatives that Manilva has a full-time Civil Guard post, making for greater control and coordination with the Local Police. Gámez's response was that it is a priority issue and the necessary steps will be taken to make it a reality in the shortest possible time. Also discussed was the installation
of another two footbridges in the municipality. One connecting La Paloma and Playa Paraíso and another crossing between Los Granados and Los Hidalgos. Both the mayor and the deputy mayor stressed the need that these areas have these footbridges connecting them as currently there is no way of crossing from one side to another without the corresponding danger of crossing the busy N-340. Of course, the regeneration of the Castillo beach was also a fundamental issue placed on the table. It is a priority objective of the Government Team to unblock this project and that this problem dating back to the 80s is finally solved. This proved to be a cordial meeting where both parties were predisposed to carry out these proposals and move them forward.

Actividades para la Fiesta de Halloween Dentro de las actividades programadas por el área de Extranjeros, que dirige la edil Laura López, este mes de octubre está previsto la celebración de la fiesta de Halloween. Se trata de una festividad de procedencia anglosajona,instaurada en nuestro calendario de celebraciones. En este caso el 26 de octubre en el bar Mirror Mirror del Puerto de la Duquesa, tendrá lugar Halloqueen,una fiesta de disfraces que contará con la actuación de Covergirls. Este evento está organizado por la asociación Be Yourself. La recaudación servirá
para costear gastos de otra de las fiestas destacadas de la época estival como es el Manilva Pride. Por otra, organizado por las áreas de Extranjeros y Educación, el 31 de octubre desde las cuatro de la tarde, los más pequeños podrán disfrutar de la fiesta de Halloween que contará con concurso de disfraces, animación infantil o Castillos hinchables, entre otras actividades. Además para el jueves 31 de este mes y el 2 de noviembre, la delegación de Cultura del Ayuntamiento de Manilva junto con la Escuela de Teatro del
municipio, ponen en marcha El Pasaje del Terror, donde por tan solo 3 euros, podrán disfrutar de la manera más terrorífica, con la puesta en escena de estos actores locales. El lugar elegido para esta actividad es La Colonia Infantil de Sabinillas. La Oficina de Turismo adapta su horario para el Otoño-Invierno La oficina de Turismo del Ayuntamiento de Manilva, ubicada en el edificio Mikonos en el Puerto de la Duquesa, recibe a cientos de personas que requieren sus servicios por diversos motivos. Ciudadanos extranjeros que visitan nuestra localidad y solicitan información, tramitación de gestiones con otras delegaciones, atención al público con asuntos diversos etc.
Una vez finalizada la temporada estival, la concejala responsable del área, Eva Galindo, ha coordinado con su equipo de trabajo, el nuevo horario de invierno. Además del horario de mañana habitual de 8:00 h a 15:00 h de lunes a viernes, el vespertino será de lunes a jueves de 17:30 h a 21:00 h, los viernes de 17:00 h a 21:00 h y el sábado de 10:00 h a 15:00 h.

No me gusta como se está gestionando, así que ya no pago más cuotas!
C
omo hemos explicado en el pasado, la mayoría de las Comunidades solo tienen una fuente de ingresos, las cuotas que pagan los propietarios. Algunas Comunidades puede tener otros ingresos, como el alquiler de zonas o instalaciones comunes, pero son pocas. Cuando un propietario no está contento con las decisiones tomadas en la junta o con la forma en que el Presidente y el Comité están gestionando la Comunidad, reaccionan dejando de pagar las cuotas, para intentar dañar a la comunidad y obligarles a reaccionar, pero esta reacción raramente ocurre, por cómo funciona el sistema legal español. Según nuestro sistema legal actual, la única forma de no perder los derechos dentro de una comunidad es que estéis al día con el pago de todas vuestras cuotas, si sois deudores perdéis la mayoría de vuestros derechos, podéis gritar todo lo alto que queráis, pero no os va a escuchar nadie, ya que no estáis cumpliendo vuestras obligaciones. El hecho de no pagar las cuotas no es la solución, solo empeorará la situación y os complicará las cosas a título personal. Entonces, si no estoy contento, ¿qué hago? La ley española es muy clara, y como propietarios tenéis dos opciones para afrontar la situación, la primera es nombrar un abogado, a título personal, y tomar acciones legales, y la segunda es buscar el apoyo de los vecinos y presentarse como Presidente en la próxima Junta General, y entonces usted sería el ciudadano ejemplar que de-
berá hacer cumplir la ley en la comunidad. Algunas comunidades tienen enormes problemas económicos causados por los propietarios morosos, los promotores que aún poseen propiedades y están en liquidación, o los bancos que no han registrado su titularidad, por lo que no hay nadie a quien reclamar a menos que se pueda conseguir una prueba de su titularidad. Cuando esto sucede, siempre hay un grupo de propietarios que dicen ‘si no están pagando por qué voy a pagar yo’, ‘yo no tengo porque pagar lo de los morosos’ o ‘cuando llegue el juicio en 5 años ya veremos’. Estos propietarios no están exactamente equivocados en su forma de ver, pero solo están empeorando la situación y poniendo en peligro el valor de su inversión y de su vivienda. Hay acciones que puede tomar, para al menos aliviar el dolor de una lista de morosos que no para de crecer: En primer lugar, la Comunidad puede aprobar e incluir en los Estatutos una Prohibición para los deudores del uso de la piscina e instalaciones comunitarias no esenciales (pistas de paddle, wifi comunitaria, etc). No se puede evitar que los deudores accedan al garaje, el ascensor o cortar su agua ni luz, ya que esto es ilegal; pero se puede limitar el acceso a servicios no esenciales. Esta limitación debe ser aprobada por unanimidad en una Junta, firmada por el Presidente en la Notaría e inscrita en el Registro de la Propiedad, de modo que sea legalmente vinculante para todos los propietarios actuales y futuros,
sus inquilinos y sus invitados. Si no se registra, solo será vinculante para aquellos propietarios que se pueda demostrar que lo sabían (aquellos que votaron directamente en la reunión). La segunda acción que recomendamos implementar es un descuento por pronto pago en las cuotas. Muchas comunidades tienen una penalización por demora, sin embargo, cuando nos vemos en el Juzgado nos encontramos con que, aunque ganemos el juicio por la reclamación de cuotas, no se incluya esa penalización ni los costes judiciales, si el propietario afirma que no sabía que había una penalización. Un descuento por pronto pago es básicamente una penalización invertida, por lo que aumenta el presupuesto. Los propietarios que
pagan a tiempo obtienen el descuento (usted paga igual que antes) y los propietarios, que no pagan o pagan tarde, no lo reciben, por lo que tienen que pagar más. Recomendamos un 20% de descuento, por lo que si un banco se hace cargo de una propiedad, la comunidad recuperará las cuotas correspondientes al año en curso y los 3 años anteriores, y también el ‘descuento’ correspondiente a todas esas cuotas ya que no se les aplica, por lo que se recuperaría 3/4 de un año más que si no tuvieses el descuento aprobado. Estas acciones no ayudan a corto plazo, pero al menos significa que se están tomando medida a largo plazo y con estas medidas se alentará a otros propietarios a pagar. En cuanto a las propiedades tu-
rísticas, las Legislación actual es, cuan menos, inconsistente. En Diciembre, se aprobó una modificación para que las Comunidades puedan incrementarles en un 20% las cuotas a las viviendas de uso turístico, pero esto se derogó en Enero, por lo que no pudimos ponerlo en práctica. Estos cambios en la ley son frecuentes, por eso es tan necesario que vuestra Comunidad tenga un Administrador de Fincas Colegiado. I’m not happy with how it’s being run, so I’m not going to pay my Community fees!
A
s we have explained in the past, most Communities only have one source of income, the fees that owners pay. A very small group of Communities may have other income, such as rental income from Communal areas or installations, but that is a minority. When an owner is not happy with decisions made at an AGM/EGM or with how the President and committee are managing issues, they tend to fire back by not paying their community fees, trying to hurt the community and forcing a reaction, but this reaction will rarely occur due to how the Spanish legal system is set up. According to our current legal system, if you have an issue, the only way to have a right to fight for it is if you pay all your fees, if you are in arrears, you lose most of your rights as an owner, so you can shout as loud as you want, but no one will listen, as you are not contributing to the maintenance of the urbanization. So, if you stop paying because you don’t agree with the works that are being carried out, or how your money is being spent, then
withholding your fees is not the solution, it will only make matters worse and complicate things for you personally. So if I’m unhappy what do I do? The Spanish law is very clear, and if you are not happy, then you have two options, the first is to appoint a lawyer personally or secondly you can canvas for support and stand as President at the next AGM, and then you would be the law abiding citizen making the decisions. Some Communities have huge financial issues that are caused by owners not paying fees, promoters or developers who still own properties and are in liquidation, or Banks that have not registered the ownership of the properties, so there is no one to chase unless you can obtain proof of their ownership. When this happens, you always have a group of owners who say ‘if they aren’t paying why should I’ , ‘there is no point in putting good money after bad’ or ‘the Spanish legal system will never catch up with me’. These owners aren’t exactly wrong in the way they are looking at things, but they are only making the situation worse and really jeopardizing the value of their investment in Spain. There are actions that you can take, to at least alleviate the pain of an increasing list of debtors: Firstly, the Community can approve and include in the Statutes a Prohibition for debtors from using the pool and non essential Community installations (paddle courts, communal wifi, etc). You can’t stop debtors from accessing the garage, the lift or cut their water or electricity off, as this would be classed as coercion; but you can limit access to non – essential services. This limitation needs to be unanimously approved at a GM, signed by the President in the Notary, and registered in the Property Registry, so that it will be legally binding for all current and future owners, their tenants and their guests. If you
don’t register it, it will only be binding for those owners who you can prove knew about it (those who voted directly at the meeting). The second action you should implement is a prompt payment discount. Many Communities have a late payment penalty, however, when you eventually see the debtor in Court, you run the risk of only partially wining the legal actions and losing out on the penalty and the court costs. A prompt payment discount is basically a paperwork acton, or an inverted penalty, so you increase the budget, owners who pay on time get the discount (you pay the same as before) and owners, who do not pay or pay late, don’t get the discount, so they have to pay more. We recommend a 20% discount, so if a property is taken over by a Bank, you will recover the current years worth of fees, the 3 previous years, and also the ‘inverted penalty’, in our case 25% of a year’s fee times 3, so we recover 3 years worth of fees plus an extra 75% of a year. Neither of these actions helps in the short run, but at least they mean that you are addressing the long term problem and they will encourage other owners to pay. Regarding Tourist properties, the Spanish legislations is inconsistent, to say the least. In December they approved a law so that Communities can implement a 20% increase on tourist rental properties, but this Legislation was removed in January, so we could never actually put it in place, this proves that being up to date with the Current legislation is a must, that’s why you need a Chartered Community Administrator! ¿ES OBLIGATORIO HACER TESTAMENTO EN ESPAÑA? ¿QUÉ VENTAJAS TIENE? Aquellos extranjeros que además de residir en España tengan bienes inmuebles, cuentas o cualquier tipo de bien en nuestro país se habrán preguntado alguna que otra vez sobre la necesidad o no de hacer un testamento aquí en España. Nuestro consejo es que siempre que se tengan bienes fuera del país de residencia es conveniente hacer testamento en cada uno de ellos, designando a los bienes y a sus herederos, para evitar conflictos posteriores al fallecimiento. Aclarar que no es obligatorio firmar testamento en España, ya que las autoridades españolas deben reconocer la validez de un testamento extranjero, aunque es cierto que los costes se incrementan cuando es necesaria su traducción y legalización o apostilla (requisito éste imprescindible para que tengan la consideración de documentos públicos en España). Decir que el caso de fallecer sin testamento no implica que los bienes del causante se los quede
el Estado. Para ello, se abre la sucesión “ab intestato” en la que es la ley la que dice qué parientes heredan y en qué proporción. En España, el lugar donde se puede otorgar testamento es siempre ante un notario público, el cual certificará su identidad, estado (si es apto o no para firmar testamento) y dará fe de sus últimas voluntades, recogiéndolo en un documento por escrito. Una vez fallecido el causante, el/ los heredero/s tendrán que obtener un certificado de últimas voluntades donde se recoge los testamentos que el causante firmó en España durante toda su vida y donde se encuentra el último firmado por éste. En España, el último testamento firmado por el causante es el que tendrá validez. El notario será el encargado de notificar su otorgamiento al Registro General de Actos de Última Voluntad situado en Madrid, donde se lleva un control pormenorizado de todos los testamentos firmados en nuestro país. El Derecho español requiere que
el Testamento se haga siguiendo los formalismos exigidos por ley española. Hasta ahora, si no se decía nada en cuanto a la ley aplicable a la sucesión se aplicaba la ley nacional del causante; sin embargo, desde el próximo mes de agosto será aplicable la ley del Estado donde resida el causante en el momento del fallecimiento. Esto se puede modificar simplemente mencionando en el testamento la ley que se desea aplicar. Es por esto que recomendamos a quienes firmaran testamento sin mencionar qué ley desean que se aplique, que firmen un nuevo testamento en el que especifiquen qué ley quieren que sea aplicada a su sucesión. El Proceso para preparar un testamento en España es relativamente sencillo, siempre que cuentes con el asesoramiento de un abogado que pueda asesorarte y preparar dicho documento. Lo más conveniente es hacerlo a doble columna, inglés y español, para que el testador tenga claro el contenido de lo que firma. Otro punto que plantea muchas dudas es el precio del mismo. Firmar testamento en España es relativamente barato en comparación con otros países. En nuestro caso, el coste de firmar testamento asciende a 150 Euros por persona incluyendo en el mismo: reunión con el cliente y recopilación de información; preparación del mismo y asistencia en notaría, por lo que el motivo económico no es excusa para no hacerlo. IS IT MANDATORY TO MAKE A SPANISH WILL? WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES? Foreigners who own real estate, bank accounts or any type of asset in Spain probably have wondered occasionally about whether or not to make a will here in this country. Our advice is that wherever goods and/or assets are located, in whichever country, it is advisable to make a will in each of those countries. This ensures that the distribution of your goods and /or assets; and the choice of heirs, is specified according to your wishes, thus avoiding any misunderstanding after death. We would like to clarify, that although it is not compulsory to sign a will in Spain as the Spanish authorities do recognize the validity of foreign wills; the costs for the translation and legalization or apostle, (a requisite which is indispensable for the any document to be accepted in Spain), are very high compared to the relatively inexpensive costs for making a Spanish will now. In the case where a person does not leave a will the assets of the deceased are not left to the state. In Spain an “intestate” succession is covered by the Spanish law which stipulates which relatives inherit and in what proportion. In Spain bloodline takes precedence over partners or spouse. (E.g. the testator’s children have the right to inherit before their husband or wife). All Spanish wills must always be signed in front of a Public Notary, who will certify the testator’s identity, status, state of mind, (suitability to sign a will) and will attest to his last wishes, all this is reflected in a written document signed by all parties. This Public Notary is responsible for notifying the General Registry in Madrid of the testator’s last will. Once deceased, it is the heir/s that will be required to obtain a Certificate of Last Will and Testimony from the Central Will Registry in Madrid where all of the wills that the deceased signed in Spain during their life are listed. The last will signed by the deceased is the only one that is valid. Spanish law requires that a will is made following the formalities specified by Spanish law. To date the law applicable to the distribution of assets after death, (if nothing was mentioned in the will), would be that of the country of the nationality of the testator. However, from August 2015 the new law states that the law to be applied will now be that of the country of residence of the testator at the time of death. This change can be over ruled simply by stating in a new will which law you wish to take precedence. That is why we recommend that your will is checked and that if necessary a new will is signed specifying exactly which law should be applied in your case. The process for preparing a will in Spain is relatively simple as long as you count on the advice of a lawyer who can advise and prepare the document. It is best to do it in two columns, (one in English, and one in Spanish), so that the testator can understand the content of what is being signed. Another point that concerns some people is the cost, which actually is relatively cheap compared to other countries. hen it comes to the way in which we are leading our lives, the world in which we live has changed significantly over not that many years. Do you remember starting the day off with a bowl of cornflakes smothered in processed sugar and full fat milk, followed by a couple of slices of white processed bread smothered in butter and marmalade (laden with sugar), then washing that down with a couple of cups of strong coffee before we rushed off to work? Then at work the stresses of the day were broken by coffee to keep you going, with a packet of sandwiches and a bag of crisps at lunch time. A sneaky stop off on the way home for a
couple of pints for some, then dinner followed by bed. Sound familiar? Through a combination of increased awareness of the dangers of processed food and sugars, non-stop articles and TV programmes warning us of health issues; people are becoming increasingly health conscious. Add to that the mass of personal trainers and nutritionists out there, and people nowadays are more active and much more aware when it comes to healthy eating and lifestyle. If you are reading this, you probably made the decision to move to the south of Spain some years ago, and boy, how things have changed as a result. Longer days, constant sunshine, lovely

salads, a relaxed life, and probably a lot more time spent outside walking, or for many, playing golf or tennis. Oh yes, and the big one, much less stress! This is all resulting in something that is causing massive issues around the Globe for all sorts of reasons. People are living longer and needing more medical help along the way, because, despite being generally healthier now, older people still have more health issues than younger people. With that comes an ever increasing stress on healthcare systems. The ageing population also means that the ratio between retirees and workers is swinging in a way that means less taxable income is there to help fund the ever increasing medical needs. So, while it is great we are all living longer, and therefore having a longer and healthier retirement, how much attention are we paying to this fact with regards to financial health? The pension pot and savings pot we hope you have accumulated now has to last for an ever increasing length of time. Have you considered the need for adequate medical insurance before it is too late to
be accepted as a client (because you are too old)? Inheritances may be left to you at a much later stage of your life, and when they are, they could also be smaller due to the fact your parents lived so much longer. In summary, it is really very important to spend time considering all of these factors. How many of us actually look at this in detail, with an honest reality check regarding the years ahead? One of the things I like to do with my clients is to make sure we look at the big picture, assessing what you have and how long it is likely to last. Should you be putting the brakes on the lifestyle just a bit for that added longevity financially, or are you being too cautious? It is amazing the amount of couples I meet who are being too careful with money. Or have you got it just about right? What happens if inflation rises or falls, or the money you have invested loses value or, hopefully, makes more than you expected? Oh yes, and what happens to your income when exchange rates move? It is always said that you cannot
buy time, but strangely enough, most clients I meet here in Spain look a lot younger than they actually are, so in my view, they all seem to have managed to do just that, aided probably by all of the things we know are good about living here. So, if by talking we can remove a little more stress by getting all of those financial ducks in a row, then maybe you can cheat the grim reaper for a good many more years to come

The Musicians Association of Gibraltar (M.A.G.) will officially be launched on the 14th November 2019. There will be a general meeting which will be held at the Calpe Rowing Club at 7pm, this meeting is open to all singers, musicians, DJ’s and musical performers. We are here to help promote local performers while performing their craft and to ensure that we can all have a level playing field. “M.A.G. has been formed as a union for all local musicians and performers from DJ’s to live bands, irrespective of the level of experience or style of music” said a spokesperson for the union. We believe that there is a need to revive the local live music scene, whilst at the same time helping established musicians grow their musical talent both in Gibraltar and internationally. M.A.G will be approaching the local bars and music venues as well as other musical organisations to establish a rapport with them and work together for the benefit of musicians. M.A.G has been created by a number of local musicians and its leadership

A Fascinating tale of Experience and Success! As leader of the well-regarded Experience Group here on the Costa del Sol, Alan James leads his group of companies, The Experience Group, together in celebration this year to mark 50 successful years in business. The history of those 50 years is an incredible and interesting story marking the Experience Group as one of the coasts most important and influential group of companies who have led the way in the progression, success and development of the area. After 15 years working in construction in the UK, a piece of advice from a friend opened the eyes of Alan James to an opportunity where buyers existed but supply was lacking. Based on this advice, and having made an exploratory visit to the Costa del Sol in the late 1960s, it was discovered that there were a number of European buyers looking to purchase holiday homes along the coast, however the style of the Spanish properties available on the real estate market at that time did not suit their style. It was here after assisting in the redesign of a residential project in La Cala that the Experience Group as we know it today started. Since 1969 when Alan first arrived on the golden shores of the Costa, together with influential and international business partners, his growth and importance as a developer has been an incredible journey. Choosing his location carefully between Marbella and Estepona, Alan’s team marked their first construction/development, sales and marketing with The Benamara Pueblo Project, Benamara Gardens, Jasmin Villas, and Dos Hermanas urbanisation in conjunction with some Spanish Companies from Madrid and San Sebastian. The success of these projects led to the Bena Vista Urbanisation of 100 apartments and townhouses plus a Commercial Centre of 50 shops
and offices on the north side of the main road. The next project was Las Palmeras de Bena Vista, an impressive development of 400 apartments and townhouses. In time, a bowls and tennis club were also built by Alan and his team, golf courses, villas and more commercial and residential units soon followed. Alan bought the Gary Player designed El Paraiso Golf club at the end of 1982 and with the elp of the Golf Director David Steel and the many new members laid the foundations to the huge success the Golf club has now owned by the Members. A never before seen marketing strategy was rolled out where the team focused on the sale of these units to buyers in the UK and Northern Europe. The Groups own Exhibition division arranged Property in Spain Exhibitions throughout northern Europe every 2 weeks to tap into the growing market. In time as the popularity of the Costa del Sol as a holiday destination grew, the demand for holiday properties took off and the business really started to shine brightly. A keen eye for a developing European market along with innovative sales and marketing strategies saw the Experience Group’s client base encompass buyers from across Europe. In order to facilitate the arrival of potential clients to the coast in the days when aviation was a luxury few could afford, Experience Group set up a Tour Operating Company The Bena Travel Organisation and prospective buyers, holiday clients and Golfers were flown in by the plane load. At its peak the Travel company had 20 planes a week operating to Malaga Airport from most UK airports year-round. This astute business idea saw further expansion of the group to encompass not only development and construction but also the ability to offer exclusive holidays tak-

it was discovered that there were a number of European buyers looking to purchase holiday homes along the coast, ing in all the delights of the coast through their travel agency division. Alan soon became a champion of the golfing community on the coast and reached an incredible level of success, delivering around 1000 passengers each week to play on the courses throughout the Estepona and Marbella regions and was instrumental in setting up the renowned “Jimmy Tarbuck Classic” charity golf tournament, which was resident at El Paraiso Golf Club for many years before moving to Portugal, where it’s still a regular feature on the charity golf circuit. It was a natural progression for Bena Travel to expand into the cruising sector, offering travellers the opportunity to enjoy weekly cruises around the southern med,

Gibraltar, Portugal, Seville and Tangier as well as access to ski resorts in the colder months. After 20 successful years, Bena Travel was sold to TUI (previously Thomson holidays.) Perhaps one of the secrets of the group’s success throughout the last 50 years has been its flexible business model, able to respond to client demand and associated requirements. Over time, there were 17 separate companies providing services to tourists on the Costa del Sol. When it became apparent that a footbridge across the A7 Carretera was a necessity for the safety of their property purchasers and holiday makers, one was built by the group to facilitate easy and safe access to the beach. Visitors could be transported to Spain on a plane by the group, fed in one of their restaurants, assisted in the purchase or sale of a property, assisted in decorating and furnishing those properties, helped to enjoy their free time on the golfing circuit – almost every whim and requirement could be met. It is more than fair to say that this group of companies have played
such an important part in the development of the Costa del Sol, their name will be in the history books. Given the success of the group over the years, it is no surprise that when the timing was right, parts of the empire were sold off to major international companies, leaving the landscape clear to focus on what has now become known as The Experience Group. A family run affair including Alan ́s children, nephews and in-laws and more, the group now focuses on all things property. This umbrella incorporates sales, rentals, construction, reforms, internet and electrical connection. With such an impressive number of years of knowledge and experience behind the name, the group continues to shine and go from strength to strength as the focus shifts towards the future and the next 50 years! The St George Charity raises money through a number of channels including the charity’s two shops in Sabinillas, which opened at the beginning of 2014 and 2016, and the shop in La Cancelada, Estepona which opened in 2017; collection tins in numerous local bars and restaurants; markets; online second hand shop; as well as money raised at a number of events such as the Sabi Street Party, quiz nights, etc. The St George Charity also receives donations from individual or group benefactors for which it is always grateful. The St George Charity makes donations to a number of other charities: Age Concern, Manilva and Estepona, Emaus social kitchen in Estepona, Luisana – Manilva Handicapped Association, AFIMA – Fibromyalgia Charity in Manilva, Danii Children’s Cancer Charity, Open Hands Trust in Gibraltar, Hogar Betania in La Linea, Hogar Marillac in La Linea. firefighters on a mission to Lesbos to provide lifesaving services for refugees in the Aegean. The charity is also currently funding the studies of a local Spanish single mother towards her nursing qualifications. Now in its seventh year the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George’s Christmas Gift Appeal has just been launched. Each year between 400 and 500 children identified by Social Services in Manilva and Casares, and by the Emaus Social Kitchen in Estepona, receive a tote bag full of gifts with a value of at least 10 euros. The charity receives a list of children by age and gender (no names) and from the public’s generous donations the Saint George Charity sources gift items such as books, arts and crafts material, games, etc., appropriate to the age and gender of the children on the list. By purchasing from wholesalers, who also give the charity a discount, it is possible to provide a meaningful gift to all the children. In addition the gift bags are distributed to the children’s parents in time for Three Kings as the charity believes that the only thing worse than a child not receiving a gift during the festive season, is a parent not being able to to give one. Whilst donations of gifts are always welcome, the charity prefers cash donations so that the children can receive gifts of similar quality and substance. Donations can be made at any of the Saint George Charity shops in Sabinillas and La Cancelada, Estepona.

The Saint George Charity is also working on a project to create
Charity & Community a cultural integration centre, in collaboration with the local muslim association, which will provide workshops and classes and a meeting centre primarily for youngsters and women of all nationalities, to learn skills and crafts in a multicultural environment. BuddyUp (Manilva) Community Support Group In response to a tragic situation earlier in the year a number of local residents came together to form the BuddyUp (Manilva) Community Support Group, a ‘befriending’ group to provide support, comfort and a point of contact for people facing a variety of challenges. The BuddyUp group is coordinated by Marguerite Wilkins, and already has a number of members signed up. Working closely with other local charities and organisations, including the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George, Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva, Citizens’ Advice, Cudeca, Social Services, etc., the group aims to provide support and advice for the elderly, disabled, those who have recently lost a partner, single parents, divorcees, the socially excluded, people that are new to the area, in fact anyone who might need someone to talk to or just pointing in the right direction.
BuddyUp volunteers work in pairs and have access to a wide range of resources to call upon depending on the needs of those they are assisting. Saint George Charity Shops The St George Charity operates three charity shops, two in Sabinillas, Manilva and one in La Cancelada, Estepona. In Sabinillas one of the shops sells quality second hand clothing, shoes, hats and accessories; whilst the other sells a wide range of secondhand furniture, decorative items, household goods, books, cds,
dvds, etc. Our shop in La Cancelada sells the same full range of secondhand items as our Sabinillas shops and also stocks larger items of furniture and beds. Thanks to our generous donors there are new items in the shops daily, so visit regularly so as not to miss out on that fabulous bargain.
As well as stocking some great quality items the St George Charity shops also rent out various items such as wheelchairs, walking aids, travel cots, etc. The shop management welcome donations of quality secondhand items, and can arrange collection if needed. Food Bank The Saint George Charity runs a food bank initiative to help local people who are finding it difficult to make ends meet, and invites people to donate non-perishable goods, such as long life milk, pasta, rice, tinned meat and fish, tinned vegetables, etc., along with toiletries, personal hygiene and cleaning items.
The charity will supplement these items with fresh produce, and will distribute on a weekly basis to a number of individuals and families that have been identified as being in urgent need of this service. A Salute and Thank You to the Fire Fighters of the Junta De Andalucia
E
n 1992, Robbic Wiliams y Oliver Smith. El primero arqueólogo y el segundo espeleólogo licenciado en periodismo, deciden saber más de lo que se dice del monumento megalítico Stonehenge. Para ello, llegan a la ciudad de Salisbury y se registran en un hotel con intención de pernoctar aquella noche en el monumento. Cómo son conscientes de que, en una sola noche, poco pueden averiguar, sus intenciones son pasar la friolera de un mes; por la mañana, al llegar el alba, regresarán a Salisbury, y esperar la llegada del ocaso para volver al Stonehenge. Nada ocurre las cuatro primeras noches, cada uno de ellos embutido en su correspondiente saco de dormir, intentan que no les venza el sueño especulando sobre lo que fue, o lo que pudo haber sido el o los motivos de aquellos antiguos para erigir semejante monumento, ambos tienen una teoría diferente, por eso, decidieron averiguar quién de los dos se acercaba más a la verdad. Llega el 5 día y, como todas las tardes, montan en el coche, un Jaguar modelo 1985 y se dirigen al lugar. Ambos amigos conversaban relajados entre trago y trago de bourbon cuando una enorme sombra oscurece la noche primaveral de un cielo estrellado, sorprendidos ante un cambio tan repentino de tiempo, ambos amigos dejan de charlar y dirigen sus miradas hacia las alturas esperando ver una enorme nube, pero lo que ven les deja perplejo; no había tal nube, lo que realmente había oscurecido la noche y el interior del monumento megalítico, era una gigantesca aeronave con forma de la copa de un boletus edulis. Los dos amigos se quedaron mudos, sin saber qué hacer, si salir de los sacos de dormir y saludar a los posibles tripulantes de la aeronave, o echar a correr hasta el coche. Oliver miró a Robbic preguntando con un gesto que hacer.

Rogelio Martínez - Salimos de los sacos y esperamos de rodilla, correr sería inútil, imagino que si vienen contra nosotros, nada podremos hacer, así que, no nos queda otra alternativa que esperar acontecimientos - respondió R, Williams. Ambos salieron del saco a gatas y se colocaron de rodillas sin valor para mirar hacia lo alto, eran conscientes del momento tan importante que estaba a punto de ocurrir y no querían echarlo a perder. Durante un par de minutos, los dos permanecieron inmóviles esperando acontecimientos que no tardaron en llegar, de pronto un foco de luz de color lechoso de unos dos metros de circunferencia los envolvió y, cómo si de dos plumas se trataran, comenzaron a elevarse en el aire en la misma posición en la que habían permanecido sin que por ello sus cuerpos sintieran nada, ni un dolor, ni sensación alguna de estar siendo transportados hacia las alturas; un minuto después de comenzar el ascenso, se percataron de estar en el interior de aquella extraña y enorme aeronave; el foco de luz se apagó y sus cuerpos se posaron en el duro suelo metálico del artefacto. Una voz, con un cierto eco, o resonancia; como si saliera de un profundo pozo les ordenó que se incorporaran y miraran hacia el frente. El impacto fue brutal; lo
que tenían ante sus ojos, no era otra cosa que lo descrito por el profeta Ezequiel en el Antiguo Testamento, cuando se refería a la Gloria de Yahveh; unos paneles de cientos de pilotos encendidos con un espejo frontal de enorme dimensiones y varios asientos giratorios con ruedas para desplazarse cómodamente; en cada asiento, un ser de total apariencia humana salvo porque sus ojos brillaban como carbones y sus manos dotadas de cinco dedos eran como garras de águila. - Vuestra curiosidad va a ser satisfecha, vuestras preguntas respondidas, pero os advierto que nadie os creerá, nadie quiere saber la verdad porque la verdad les aterra tanto como os aterraba a vosotros dos hace unos minutos. Oliver y Robbic, no acertaba a pronunciar palabra, no porque el miedo les invadiera, no; era por la majestuosidad de aquella voz serena y el aspecto terrible a la vez que bondadoso de aquellos seres que les miraban de manera un poco burlona. - Nosotros, mejor dicho, nuestros antepasados los dioses creadores de la Bretaña, fueron los que construyeron éste centro de comunicación y adoración a sus antepasados; adoración, porque nuestra civilización guarda respeto y cariño a los que ya murieron, y centro de comunicación, porque hace más de 9000 mil años se necesitaba un centro como éste para constatar con nuestro planeta Gran Sal, que orbita alrededor de Sirio. Y, cómo sabemos que tenéis una pregunta importante, os responderé para sacaros de dudas: las piedras para la construcción de Stonehenge, fueron trasladad de un lugar no muy lejano, tal y como os hemos trasladado a vosotros al interior de la aeronave. Ahora, ya podéis marcharos tranquilos, no hay más información ni la necesitáis. Tanto Oliver, como Williams quisieron hacer más preguntas, pero algo les impedía hablar, tenían la lengua paralizada y, así continuaron hasta que la aeronave se marchó
O
n the evening of The 1st of October at 7 pm, alarms were going off in all directions, and the Local and Guardia Police were closing roads. Two helicopters airlifted two sets of fire fighters into the fire area, and more fire fighters were arriving by road, together with fire tenders. The helicopters were beginning their runs, with their loads of water being dropped directly onto the fire, which was already raging. Flames were reaching into the sky, in excess of 40 meters, accompanied by billowing black smoke, and the terrible sound of cracking trees in the fire. The fire was traveling northwards very rapidly and the wind was gusting from the East and the North, but the fire was still heading towards five properties immediately in its path. The men and women that fought the fire on that Tuesday evening, and through the night into the next morning, were not just fire fighters they were mountain men and women. True and dedicated to their cause, and their efforts were beyond and above, which is normally expected of any fire fighter! The helicopters flew until approximately 8 pm by which time they were withdrawn because of bad light and safety. The fire fighters on the ground, were then left to tackle the
fire, together with the fire (Tenders) tankers and operators. At 3 am on Wednesday morning, the fire was still raging, although being directed away from the first properties in its path. It is sad to say, that the fire in its early stages ran wild and burnt out the hotel at the top of the mountain. Power lines had been burnt and melted. Now the noise of chain saws was evident, as the fire fighters were cutting down burning trees that were still posing a threat. By 8.30 am the fire had been tamed on our side of the mountain. But unfortunately it had managed to force its way across the top of the mountain and into the next valley and beyond, where it threatened many more properties. Fire fighters and helicopters were back in action and continued their operations. Fire tenders were still climbing up mountain roads on Monday 7th of October to supply fire fighters still killing down the embers of the fire. Tuesday the 8th of October all seemed quiet and well again. We say once again. A huge thank you to the men and women of the fire fighting services of Andalucia. ME INQUIETA Me inquieta esta injusticia de mayoría exaltada, cuando un berbiquí irrumpe y taladra pensamientos, ‘in situ’ se malogra y hace esclavo a los pueblos. Me inquieta esta demora, en la que las manos se apoyan, cuestiones de asambleas, articulaciones de mundo que se quedan sin brazos. Me inquieta la voluntad de aquellos que se inclinan ante autoridades, ante un dinero sobrado ( y así no faltan sobras). Hoy bostezan una trampa y mañana otra; gasolina en caminos llagados de huellas radicales. Tanques..., no garfios de fantasías, no revólveres de azufre rocinantes. Me inquieta esa educación sin niñez confiada, por aquella sangre de deudores y adeudados, filosofía sin mar de luces y de ángeles, las madres y los padres, los cerros asfixiados y un hombre atravesado por navaja polimorfa. Me inquieta mi desidia, y este, mi pobre poema, donde reposa el beso y la palabra de lo que aún no soy, justificando un ancla donde me duermo y nada mi anatomía en ensueños. Pero también ahora, gracias a esta gramática-memoria, me inquieta estar tan vivo que muera por la tarde, ¿o es que estuve repleto de inmigrante esperanza? Me llevo la noche y siento que el día aún no acaba. Me impresionan los ojos de estudiantes, polea de sus temas, asuntos del mañana. Me inquieta el embarazo de aborto proclamado. Sabinillas - Tel: 656 681 889 Los perros generalmente parecen seres alegres, felices y despreocupados, moviendo la cola y correteando de acá para allá, por lo que se podría esperar que la mayoría tengan una “visión optimista de la vida”. Pero resulta que algunos canes son claramente más pesimistas que otros, según una investigación de la Universidad de Sydney (Australia) que publica la revista PLOS ONE. Sus conclusiones no solo sirven para conocer el mejor amigo del hombre, sino que pueden ser útiles a la hora de elegir perros de trabajo, como perros guía o perros policías. En el experimento, a los perros se les enseñó a asociar un sonido con la obtención de leche, su recompensa preferida, y a un segundo sonido, con dos octavas de diferencia, con la obtención de la misma cantidad de agua, un premio mucho menos atractivo. Una vez que los perros aprendieron a discriminar los sonidos, se les presentaron tonos «ambiguos». Si los canes respondían a los tonos ambiguos, demostraban que esperaban que ocurrieran cosas buenas para ellos, es decir, eran optimistas. Un perro muy optimista podía incluso responder a los tonos que se parecían más a los del ofrecimiento de agua. «De los perros que hemos probado, nos encontramos más que eran optimistas que pesimistas, pero es demasiado pronto para decir si eso es cierto para todos los perros en general», dice Melissa Starling, autora del estudio. Their findings not only serve to help us further understand man’s best friend, but may also be useful when selecting working dogs, such as police, rescue, or seeing-eye dogs. In the experiment, the dogs were taught to associate a sound with obtaining milk, their preferred reward, and a second sound with a two octave difference, to obtain the same amount of water, a much less attractive reward. Once the dogs learned to discriminate the sounds they were presented with ‘ambiguous’ tones. If the dogs’responded to ambiguous tones, it demonstrated that the expected good thing would happen to them, that is, they were considered to be behaving in an optimistic manner. A very optimistic dog would even respond to tones that were more like those of the ones that offered water. “Of the dogs that we tested, we found that they appeared to behave in a more optimistic than pessimistic

While it is intriguing how their behaviour may seem human, are the researchers, on the other hand simply applying human behavioural terminology and projecting it onto another species’ behavioural characteristics? This attempt at explaining animal behaviour is referred to by some as anthropomorphasizing.

nice - smoothy I was talking to a PT friend of mine the other day and we got to talking about his workouts and diet (shocking, I know! haha) Anyway, he tells me he’s been working out regularly and eating healthy… “For instance, I’ve been going for a Smoothy every day this week”, he says, because I need to ‘ up my fruit and veg intake’ Whaaaat?! Oh no. This is bad, very bad. He’s basically “undoing” his workout by drinking that stuff… Look, I understand that when you think of drinking juices, you might assume it’s healthy for you. All those nutrients and anti-oxidants from fresh fruits and veggies. What could be so bad about that? A LOT… First, the amount of sugar in most juices are extremely high. Even in the more “green” variety. And you know what sugar does? It makes you FAT! (It can also make you sick and old since it’s very aging to the body, but I’ll save that sermon for another day). Anyway, if you read a juice label, you’ll almost always always see either apple or orange juice is the first or second ingredient, which means there’s loads of sugar in it. Also, don’t be fooled by labels that say “organic”, “natural”, or “not from concentrate”. That’s all fine and dandy, but it still doesn’t change the fact that there’s tons

Have you – or someone you know – had a ‘slipped disc’? Have you ever thought about what a slipped disc actually means? What happens when discs slip – and where do they go? Importantly, if you have a ‘slipped disc’, will you always have pain? Does it mean that you can’t lift anymore? Is your back is damaged for good? Many people modify or stop their activities to avoid ‘exerting’ themselves. This could mean giving up a sport or a hobby such as gardening. And if that is the case, how do you then modify your activities? Some people stop – perhaps stopping a sport or hobby that you enjoyed, such are gardening, or anything that might be considered ‘exerting’ yourself. What are you doing instead? In this article, we take a moment to think about common beliefs about ‘slipped discs’ and how they influence your daily habits.
It’s impossible for discs to slip!
Now what would you say if I told you
that discs cannot slip – it is impossible! That’s correct – it is impossible for discs to slip. Discs are actually very strong – a study found that it takes about 740lbs of force to compress the disc height 1mm in young subjects and 460lbs force in older subjects. In normal well-functioning live humans, this will be more due to extra strength and stability added by surrounding ligaments and muscles. The disc lies between your vertebrae. Every segment in your spine has a disc except for the first to vertebras in the neck and the level between the bottom of your skull and the top vertebrae. Each disc forms a joint between two vertebrae to allow slight movement of the vertebrae, and acts as a ligament to hold the vertebrae together. These joints are very strong. Disc also act as shock absorbers in the spine – and important role which their structure is designed to do effortlessly. Discs are composed of an outer fibrous ring made up of collagen called the annulus. These layers surround an inner gel-like center mate-
rial containing loose fibers suspended in a gel which helps to distribute pressure evenly across the disc and prevent excessive forces on the vertebral end plate. The vertebral end plate create an exceptionally strong connection to the annulus of the disc making it Impossible for the disc to slip.

Comienzan las clases de Esgrima en el Castillo de la Duquesa

Después del descanso estival donde miembros del Club han participado en diferentes eventos deportivos y culturales relacionados con la esgrima volvemos a nuestra actividad en el Castillo. La pasada temporada ha estado llena de éxitos deportivos para el Club Internacional de Esgrima y todos sus componentes que de nuevo han conseguido un segundo puesto en el criterium nacional de categoría femenina de menores de 10 años equivalente al Campeonato de España, gracias a Carla Herrera y clasificar entre los 10 primeros del ranking nacional a 4 de sus alumnos.
Hemos conseguido de nuevo un meritorio tercer puesto en el Campeonato de España de Esgrima Histórica en categoría de espada y daga y ser subcampeones del Campeonato del Corpus de esgrima deportiva de Granada de la mano del maestro Alberto Zerrada. En la cita más importante de la Esgrima Artística mundial, el Campeonato del Mundo celebrado el pasado verano nuestro municipio representando a España ha subido al podium a recoger el galardón que le acredita como bronce a nivel mundial después del equipo ruso. Un éxito sin precedentes que está expuesto en el Museo de -esgrima del Castillo de la Duquesa en forma de trofeo internacional.
Estos éxitos premian el gran esfuerzo, constancia y juego limpio de estos tiradores y auguran una gran temporada actual en la cual se competirá a nivel nacional e internacional de nuevo. Este año contaremos con la inestimable ayuda del nuevo monitor James Miriel con una experiencia de más de 15 años en la esgrima a quien damos la bienvenida al Club. Fencing classes begin at the Castillo de la Duquesa For yet another year we continue with the beautiful discipline of fencing in the Municipality of Manilva. After the summer break where members of the Club have taken part in different sporting and cultural events related to fencing, we return to our regular activity in the Castle. Last season was full of sporting successes for the International Fencing Club and all its members that have again achieved a second place in the national criterion in the female under 10 category, equivalent to the Spanish Championship, thanks to Carla Herrera, and four members rank among the top 10 of the national standings.
We have again achieved a creditable third place in the Spanish Historic Fencing Championship in the sword and dagger category and being runners-up at the Granada Sports Fencing Corpus Championship thanks to the hand of the master Alberto Zerrada. In the most important event of the World of Artistic Fencing, the World Championship held last summer, our municipality representing Spain took to the podium to collect the bronze award after the Russian team. An unprecedented success that is exhibited in the Museum of fencing of the Castle in Castillo de la Duquesa in the form of an international trophy.
These successes reward the great effort, perseverance and fair play of these fencers and predict a great current season in which it will compete nationally and internationally again. This year we will have the invaluable help of our new monitor, James Miriel, who brings more than 15 years experience in fencing to whom we welcome to the Club. Congratulations to all and to continue with the wonderful art of fencing that has the intelligence of chess, the aggressiveness of martial arts, the elegance of ballet and the philosophy of the ancient knights. Holmes Sotogrande CR Estrecho Rugby Round Up for October Seniors v Cadiz Estrecho Seniors had their first league game of the season away to Cádiz. It was an exciting game with Estrecho taking the early lead with a try from Phil Nilsen. Cádiz hit back soon after when a good kick was misfielded and the chasing winger pick up to score the first try for Cádiz. After a series of penalties Cádiz converted a penalty to go into half time with the lead. After half time both teams started strong with a good exchange of play, however, a poor kick chase was exploited by the Cádiz wing and he
touched down for Cádiz to extend their lead. Estrecho came fighting back and after a period of sustained pressure Phil Nilsen drove over again for his second to put Estrecho back in the chase. A good period of defense saw Ricardo Conciencia intercept a long pass and run in to put Estrecho into the lead. It was a tense finish to the game after another Cádiz penalty brought the game to 18-19. Estrecho dominated possession and after a 25 meter maul Estrecho failed
to convert the try after the Cádiz defense knocked the ball loose over the line. All the territory was in Estrecho’s favour and with a 5 meter scrum to close the game out Marcelo made jinking run and offloaded to Alberto Campano to make Estrecho the victors 18-26. We would like to thank Cádiz for their hospitality and we look forward to the return fixture. The Seniors play their next fixture at home on Sunday 20th October against Vitorianos RC at 11am.
Ciencias Sub 16’s Vs Estrecho Sub 16’s Saturday 5th October Preparations for the first league of the season match away at Ciensias of Sevilla had gone very well, spirits were very high in the Estrecho team and we were expecting a very tough match against the Provincial champions and a side that had 13 Provincial players in its starting team, a team that Estrecho had never beaten in the league before. This was always going to be a tough first game to the season. Last minute team talks and tactics were discussed on our 2 hour trip to Seville, and everyone was up for the big challenge. The game was tight from the kick off, both teams trying to take control. However the two big Estrecho forward players, Alex Peat-Diable and Mateo Isola, started to dominate the play with their strong ball carries and dynamic running. Estrecho had
a lot of possession and time on the ball, continually carrying the ball into contact, and recycling it and attacking the Ciensias defensive line. The referee had told both teams at the start of the game, the ball must be presented straight way, to keep the game flowing, and both teams were getting penalised for holding on in the rucks, which slowed the game down and played into the hands of Ciensias. However after 6 minutes Estrecho made the first break through, with a try from Tenday Chipidza and a conversion from Manu Martin. This gave the Estrecho team great belief in themselves, and on the 15 minute mark they had added another try from Fran Gomero, to make it 12-0. The pressure was then on Estrecho as Ciencias, found another gear and kept Estrecho in their own 22 for the
last 10 minutes of the first half. A positive team talk at half time by both coaches , after a great first half performance. The second half starts and both sides battle to score first, a great game of pressure rugby ends with Ciencias scoring a try and conversion to bring the score back to 12-7. Estrecho then dug deep and with some great individual efforts from Dani Sotillo, Manu Martin, Edwin Lykoskold and others, Estrecho started to dominate again, and 2 further second half tries by the magnificent Dani Sotillo saw Estrecho extending their lead and running out comfortable winners in the end by 22-7 A big thank you to Ciencias for putting out such a very strong side to make it a great game to watch and be part off.
