Safeguarding Children As part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children. www.nspcc.org.uk
Uniform Information & School Uniform Purchases The Primary uniform can be purchased through the Khalsa Schoolwear website or can be bought at Khalsa Schoolwear shop in Bethnal Green. To save on the cost of delivery charges, Khalsa Schoolwear does a school delivery once every month. You can find further details of the delivery dates on their website or you can ask the reception office staff. • We expect every child to be in full uniform every day with their top button done up • All coats must be plain black • Shoes must be plain black – no trainers! If you are not sure about the types of shoes that are part of our uniform policy, please ask. • Please label every item of clothing • One pair of plain stud earrings can be worn • Nail polish is not allowed • Jewellery is not permitted • Long hair for both boys and girls must be tied back. Hair decorations must be small and plain • Please provide your child with a water bottle every day and make sure it is labelled with their name (water only, no fruit juice).

From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher It has certainly been a bitterly cold week, but it hasn’t put us off having lots of fun. With a few busy weeks ahead and lots of events happening, I urge you to take time to read over the key dates section of the newlsetter. Please ask if you are unsure about of any of the information included. Just to remind you that the school will be closed to students on Friday 8th December for staff training and development. As the mornings and evenings get darker, please can I remind parents that we strongly discourage you from driving down Cricklefield Place at the start and end of the school day. We have 1360 students, aged from 4 to 17, and narrow pavements with low kerbs. It would be very easy for a pupil to be knocked by a car and, in recent weeks, we have had a number of near misses. If it is essential that you drive your child to school please park in one of the side roads. No vehicle driving down Cricklefield Place should exceed 20mph. Thank you
Important reminders • School starts at 8.45am (8.35am for Year 3). It is important that your child arrives on time every day so that the teachers can start the lesson promptly. The school gate will be open from 8.25am and will close at 8.45am. • School finishes at 3.45pm (3.35pm for Year 3) every day other than Tuesday when we finish at 3.00pm (2.50pm for Year 3). • If any of your details have changed e.g. your address or phone number – please ensure you contact the office to inform us, so that we can update our records and contact you in case of an emergency. • Please ensure your child attends school every day and on time. If your child is sick then you must call the office to let us know by 8.15am. If your child has a medical appointment you must let us know in advance.

Primary Winter Concert The Primary Winter Concert will take place in the Secondary Dining Hall on Monday 11th December at 3pm and will involve pupils from Years 1, 2 and 3. Each student involved will be allocated two free tickets so that friends and family can see the amazing effort students have put in to their singing and instrumental playing this term. The concert will last for approximately 30 minutes. We look forward to seeing you there!
Puppets needed! In the New Year, Year 1 students will be exploring puppets during their topic lessons. If you have any old toy puppets (finger puppets, hand puppets, lever puppets, shadow puppets, string puppets or any other type) that you no longer need, we kindly ask that you would donate them to the school! Thank you.
Parent Progress Meetings & Pupil Progress Reports The Pupil Progress Reports and Parent Progress Meetings will take place in January. The Pupil Progress Reports will be sent out to you on Friday 5th January and the Parent Progress Meetings will take place on Tuesday 9th January.

Message from the Reception Team We are asking the Reception children to bring in NAMED baby pictures next week? We are going to be sharing pictures with the class, linking to our learning about the Christmas story. These will be collected by the teachers to share. The children will take them home again by the end of term.
Reception Nativity Play The Reception pupils will be performing the Nativity play on Wednesday 13th December at 9.15am. Reception parents are invited to attend. Two tickets will be issued per child in due course.

Isaac Newton Primary Calendar Ms Palray has worked hard once again this year to put together a fabulous INA Primary 2018 calendar, featuring work from every child across the school. This year the pupils have drawn their portrait and will all be included, with each of our twelve classes featuring across the year. A letter will be sent home early next week with an order slip attached to it; the calendar costs ÂŁ5.00 and any profit made goes towards additional primary resources. Orders need to be made by Wednesday 6th December. You can have a look at a prototype in the Primary reception area.
Lost Wedding Ring One of our parents has lost their wedding ring in the Primary playground. We would love to get the ring returned to the owner so if you find it, please hand it in to Ms Chagger at reception. Many thanks.
A Message from Ms Chaggar Please let the school know in good time if you are sending someone else to collect your child from school. The staff will not send a child home with an adult who has not been authorised by the parents/carers. This is in the interests of safeguarding your children. Thank you for your cooperation.

Parent Workshop Primary Cultural Passports Thursday 18th January at 9am & 6pm
At Isaac Newton Academy, we believe that cultural activities are a vital part of life and play a very important role in young people's social development.  In our continued mission to create an enriching curriculum for all our pupils at Isaac Newton Academy, we will be launching our brand new Primary Cultural Passports in January 2018. Our children will participate in a range of cultural activities organised by the school, and the children will have a special Cultural Passport book to record their reflections of their experience. They will also receive special stickers to acknowledge their achievements. We will be holding a parent workshop to share this initiative, explaining the amazing cultural experiences we have planned for the children, how the system will work in school, as well as how you can support your child in taking part and reflecting on cultural experiences at home. So please do come along to find out more on Thursday 18th January 2018 at 9am. The session will be repeated at 6pm on this day for those parents unable to make the morning session. The parent workshop is open to all our families in all Primary Year Groups.

Year 1 Great Fire of London Science Investigation This week the Year 1 children used their Discovery habit to carry out an exciting investigation linked to their Great Fire of London topic: why did the fire spread so quickly and stay alight for so long? The children went over to a Science lab in the Secondary school where Mr Clift-Matthews used a Bunsen burner to compare the burning rates of metal, brick and wood. The children found out that one of the reasons for the quick and wide spread of the Great Fire was that the houses were built out of wood, a material that catches light easily and burns quickly. The children thoroughly enjoyed the session and asked a great range of thoughtful questions!

Year 1 Design & Technology Lesson The Year 1 pupils have enjoyed their continued work during their Art & D&T lesson, painting their London landmarks. We look forward to seeing the finished products and displaying them around the school.
Reception Paramedic Visit As part of their Superheroes topic, the Reception pupils enjoyed a visit from a paramedic this week. The children were able to hear about the great work paramedics do to help people as well as learn some emergency first aid tips!

Reception Fire Station Visit The Reception pupils visited the High Road Fire Station this week and were taught some key lifesaving information. They also found out lots of facts about the station, the firefighting equipment and the great role of the firefighters. The children also had an exciting opportunity to sit in the fire engine!

Wonderful Writing Week It was great to see so many children bringing in examples of their great handwriting from home and to see so many pupils trying really hard to improve their writing in their lessons last week. Celebration & Awards Assembly At the end of every term the children enjoy the opportunity to share and celebrate some of their learning and achievements with you. Each teacher chooses two children from their class to receive a certificate in the Celebration and Awards Assembly, one in recognition of a child who has demonstrated the habits of all the seven BRIDGES throughout the term, and the other in recognition of a pupil’s outstanding academic effort and achievement. The assemblies start at the following times in the Primary dining hall:

Breakfast and After School Club Every parent has Wisepay details and a password, which will enable you to book a place for ‘Breakfast Club’ or ‘After School Club’. Payments must be made in advance. If you experience any problems, please contact Ms Chaggar who will be happy to help. Breakfast is available each day from 7.45am and costs just £2.50 per day. The children enjoy a range of cereals, toast and different topping, juice or milk and fruit. Any child attending must be brought to the main reception area by 8.20am at the latest. After School Club runs from 3.45pm – 6.00pm (3.00pm – 6.00pm on Tuesdays) and costs just £5.50 per hour. The children enjoy a range of snacks each evening and a variety of games and activities.

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges.� Isaac Newton
BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a wellrounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. At School • At part of our 6 pillars we continuously stress the importance to the children of managing distractions and concentrating during their learning time. • It is essential that from Reception upwards the children become better at managing distractions and demonstrate that they can work on a task for a sustained period of time. • We always encourage a ‘can do’ resilient attitude and talk to the children about the importance of not giving up on a task too easily, even when it presents as a challenge, learning that ‘practice makes perfect’. • We discuss that having patience and trying something again, even though we may find it difficult, will lead to success. We also explain that patience can also mean not having what we want instantly and that sometimes we have to wait our turn.
At Home Encourage your child to try to complete things more independently – when they say they can’t do something, tell your child to have a go and to try a little harder. If then they are still completely stuck with a task, offer a small amount of help to get them started. Offer encouragement and praise your child’s effort. Talk to your child about how you learned to do things and how hard some things were for you too but that, through not giving up, being determined and practising, you got better.
