From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher I hope you all enjoyed a lovely half term. As you will remember just a few weeks into the new term a team of Ofsted inspectors visited us for two days. They spent time visiting lessons in both the primary and secondary across a range of different subject areas, examining our curriculum and looking at pupils’ progress and attainment. We are delighted to share that the school was found to be outstanding in all areas right from Reception to the Sixth Form. I feel incredibly proud of this achievement and proud that the hard work and commitment of our whole school community has been recognised. Thank you parents and carers for the amazing support that you offer us every day and, huge congratulations to all the staff and students for their hard work and commitment in making INA a great place to learn. The new topics for this half term are now underway. Information Topic sheets for each year group are now online under the primary section of the school website and in the Home Learning tab under Parent Information. These will give you further insight into your child’s learning for this half term along with ideas about how you can support your child at home. The Home Learning for this week can also be found in the same place. If you need any further assistance accessing either, please let your child’s class teacher know.

Breakfast & After School Club Every parent has Wisepay details and a password, which will enable you to book a place for ‘Breakfast Club’ or ‘After School Club’. Payments must be made in advance. If you experience any problems, please contact Ms Chaggar who will be happy to help. Breakfast is available each day from 7.45am and costs just £2.50 per day. The children enjoy a range of cereals, toast and different topping, juice or milk and fruit. Any child attending must be brought to the main reception area by 8.20am at the latest. I hope that you enjoyed a lovely half term break. As you know, Ofsted visited the school just before the holiday. The team of six inspectors spent two days observing lessons in all year groups and subjects from Reception to Year 13, talking to staff, governors and students, looking at students’ learning, and reviewing the staff and parent questionnaires. I am delighted to let you know that INA has been judged as Outstanding overall and in all categories, as follows:

• Effectiveness of leadership and management - Outstanding • Quality of teaching, learning and assessment - Outstanding • Personal development, behaviour and welfare - Outstanding • Outcomes for pupils - Outstanding • Early years provision - Outstanding • Sixth Form - Outstanding I t is really pleasing to receive this validation of the school’s work from Ofsted, however we are as keen as ever to continue to develop and improve our provision. I would like to congratulate our staff, students and parents on this great outcome and say a particular thank you to all of our staff members for their hard work and unwavering commitment to INA. I have included the summary of the key findings from the report n the adjacent page. The full report can be found on our website.

Summary of key findings for parents and pupils This is an outstanding school •

The principal and her senior team provide strong, highly effective leadership. The school has expanded rapidly since 2014. Leaders have managed this very successfully and ensured that the school provides an outstanding education.

Pupils’ attainment by the end of key stages 1 and 4 is consistently above average. Standards in English and mathematics are high, with many pupils achieving the top grades in these subjects by the end of Year 11.

Pupils make outstanding progress in all year groups because teaching is very effective. High-quality planning and excellent questioning ensure that pupils’ needs are identified and fully met.

Excellent support is in place for disadvantaged pupils and those who have special educational needs (SEN) and/or disabilities. As a result, these pupils make very strong progress.

The curriculum is planned exceptionally well and provides truly memorable learning experiences. It ensures that pupils’ personal development is outstanding.

Pupils’ health and safety is given the utmost importance. Strong partnerships are forged with external agencies to keep all pupils safe.

Pupils behave exceptionally well in lessons and around the school. Pupils have very positive attitudes to their learning and enjoy school. As a result, attendance has improved further and is above the national average.

Governors have an excellent understanding of the school’s strengths and priorities. They provide timely and effective support and challenge to the leadership team. Governors have contributed directly to the outstanding quality of education that the school provides.

Children get off to a flying start in the early years and make outstanding progress. They have access to a wide range of high-quality activities which support their all-round development.

Provision in the sixth form is outstanding. Almost all students are studying academic subjects and thriving.

Occasionally, some teachers do not check pupils’ understanding well enough in lessons before

Mathemagical Maths Week Week beginning 5th November

In the aim of raising the profile of mathematics as a lifelong skill that we use every day, we are holding a ‘Mathemagical Maths Week’. The staff have been busy planning ways in which they can make mathematical links to every curriculum area and ensuring that the week will be a fun one! We ask that you encourage and support your child at home and get them to do as much thinking about their use of maths at home or during their visits to the shops, walk to school etc. As an additional challenge, there are prizes to be won for pupils who can demonstrate some creative ways of demonstrating how they have used and applied their maths skills and knowledge at home. All entries must be given to Ms Broadway by Monday 12th November.

Mathematics Mastery Workshop Thursday 8th November 9am & 6pm

This workshop has run successfully for the last three years and has really helped parents to gain a greater understanding of the Maths Mastery approach used at INA. Parents will be introduced to the approach and be given strategies to use to support their child at home. To ensure we set out enough space and resources for the event, we ask that that you contact the Primary office staff to confirm your attendance. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Reception Nativity Clothing Donations Wanted Do you have any clothes that were used for previous nativity plays and are no longer needed? If so, please drop them off to Maxwell class so that they can be put to good use. Thank you in advance from the Reception team. The Reception pupils will be performing the Nativity play on Wednesday 12th December at 9.15am. Reception parents are invited to attend. Two tickets will be issued per child in due course.

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Week commencing 5th November 2018

BRAVERY

Bravery comprises five dispositions: Leadership Optimism

Risk-taking Courage

Experimentation

At School •

• • •

We encourage the children to try new things and experiment every day whether it is a food that they have not tried before or new activities that they may not normally choose during the afternoon sessions. For Year 1 and 2 we would encourage the children to try different reading books or authors/topics they might not normally consider reading or to experiment with the paint during art – trying to create different effects etc. We always encourage the children to have courage when they fall over and hurt themselves and to remain as calm as possible while we help them. We aim for all pupils to demonstrate their leadership skills by helping others, being smart in their appearance, being kind, having good manners and generally demonstrating all their BRIDGES characteristics. We encourage some of the quieter pupils to have the courage to share their ideas in class and to have work with optimism and develop a real ‘can do’ attitude.

At Home

Encourage your child to try as many different things as possible – whether it is food, different enrichment clubs, books etc. Support your child to develop their own mind and not just follow what everyone else is doing. It is important that the pupils are able to try things without worrying about getting it wrong or worrying about what other people think. Celebrate the fact that by making mistakes we are always learning. Give examples of times when you have had to be brave and try something for the first time, or when something did not go so well the first time but you learned from the mistakes you made and got better. Help remind your child at home about being smart in their appearance and role-modelling good behaviour through their leadership skills. Allow your child to help with jobs and roles at home, taking on the responsibility for cleaning their room, keeping their books or toys organised etc.
