From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher It has been a busy week with lots of lovely, interactive learning and ‘Discovery’ work going on. Our Black History Month celebrations are well underway and the pupils have voted for their new School Council members. The children are eagerly learning songs for the Harvest Festival Assembly. Ms West has now put up Harvest Festival posters around the school and on the gates to advise us of the best items to donate over the coming week.

From Jo Spencer – Interim Principal On Monday, Ofsted announced that they would be inspecting INA on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. We were pleased to welcome the team of six inspectors who were looking at the quality of provision and outcomes from Reception to Year 13. I would like to thank all of the parents who completed the Parent View questionnaire, our staff who all worked so hard over the two days, our students who made us so very proud, and our governing body and Ark for their support. We will share the outcome of the inspection with you when the report is published in a few weeks’ time.

Phonics Workshop for Parents (Year 1 and Reception Parents)

Just to remind you that we will running a workshop on Wednesday 10th October at 9am and again at 6pm, to share information regarding the Read Write Inc. phonics programme that we follow. We ask that all parents join us in the main dining hall for an introduction to the evening and then two workshops will be run, one for Reception parents and one for Year 1 parents. Can you please contact the Primary reception office if you will be attending so that we have a good idea on the number of parents to prepare the sessions for. We look forward to seeing many of you then.

Newton's News As part of our Newsletter enrichment, we decided that it would be great to conduct some interviews around INA! This week – we thought that it would be a great idea to interview two teachers who are new to the school: Mr Flint and Ms Chowdhary. We asked them a few questions about what it was like being a new teacher at Isaac Newton Academy; as well as some other questions that sparked our interest!

MR FLINT’S INTERVIEW: Mr Flint why did you become a teacher? I became a teacher because I loved school as a child. I really wanted to share that enjoyment with as many people as possible. What has been your favourite moment since joining INA? I have enjoyed so many moments since joining this school. I love teaching my enrichment club, I really liked being introduced to my new class, and I also really liked my interview here! I think my favourite moment, however, happened to me yesterday. We were writing rhyming poems about dinosaurs in class, and one of my children said that the dinosaur was ‘walking slowly, whilst eating guacamole’. I thought that was great! What was your most embarrassing childhood memory? When I was in Reception myself, I once did PE and I got changed back into another boy’s clothes. I wore his shirt, his trousers, his tie – everything! He also went home wearing my clothes. The problem was, he was a lot taller than me – so our uniforms didn’t really suit each other! Our parents had to do a quick swap back in the playground the next day. What is your favourite subject? My favourite subjects when I was at school were Art and PE, however my favourite subjects to teach are all of the topic lessons. If you had another job, what would you do? I think perhaps I would deliver newspapers on my bike, because I really like cycling. Or maybe I would work in the music industry. You never know, maybe one day you’ll see me delivering newspapers to your door!

MS CHOWDHARY’S INTERVIEW: Have you worked in any other schools before? Yes I have, I used to work in another school near to Newham. I taught there for about 4 years. What has been your funniest moment in school? One day I woke up, got myself dressed and went to school. I was teaching my class – and I looked down and realised that I was still wearing my slippers! Do you have a favourite sport? I do, I really like football. It keeps you very fit and healthy, and I like the fact that it’s competitive! I also enjoy going to the gym. Why did you decide to work at INA? When I came here – I really liked that the ambassadors came to speak to me! I thought that was really lovely and friendly, and it made me think that I definitely wanted to work here. Since being here – I have absolutely loved getting to know all of the children. It’s been lovely. What have you learned since working at INA? I have learned lots of things since coming to INA. One of the main things that I have learned is all about the BRIDGES dispositions! It’s been great to learn those and use them every day. I’ve also enjoyed learning about lots of different composers, as we have a ‘composer of the fortnight’ who we learn all about. Finally, if you weren’t a teacher – what job would you like to have? Oh that’s a good question! I think that if I wasn’t a teacher… then I would love to be a detective!

School Council After tough competition and lots of applications of interest, pupils from Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 were invited to prepare a 30 second speech to present in an assembly. They were asked to introduce themselves to the rest of the school, discuss their ideas for making the school even better and explain why they would make a great School Council member. Every pupil delivered a speech to be extremely proud of, but had they done enough to convince everyone else that they were the right people for the job? During the course of the day classes had the opportunity to cast their vote by ticking the name of the person they wanted to choose and placing their vote in the ballot box. Â I am looking forward to my first meeting with the council and looking forward to hearing about all the exciting and creative ideas that they will have over the course of the next academic year to make the school even better.

Welcome Centre Visit On Wednesday 3rd October, the newly elected School Council and four representatives from Year 8 and Year 9 visited the Redbridge Welcome Centre. The purpose of the visit was to find out about the good work the Welcome Centre does in our local community. The children asked great questions and collected a range of information, which they will share with the school during next week’s Harvest Assembly. Mrs West and Ms Begum were very proud of all the children who attended and we look forward to their presentation next week.

Multicultural Food Fayre & Dress Up Day Friday 19th October

To celebrate the amazing diversity of our school community, we will be holding a Multicultural Food Fayre and Dress Up day on the last day of the half term, Friday 19th October. To raise funds for the school we are inviting the staff and children to pay ÂŁ1 to wear traditional or cultural dress for the day. The staff are equally excited about dressing up and are planning their costumes as we speak! The children need to wear clothes that are practical, as they will still need to continue with their day-to-day routines and play. The Reception children will continue with their PE lesson in the afternoon but the activities will be adapted to enable them to take part in their traditional costumes, so please help them choose clothing that will allow for them to do so. We are also inviting parents/carers to make some cultural food dishes that they can sell after school in the dining hall to help raise money for the school. It will be a great way to share some of your favourite dishes with the rest of the school community. If you make a dish we would ask that you stay to help sell your dish so that you can explain the contents and ingredients to any potential buyers. The Food Fayre will be from 4.00-5.00pm although we would like parents/carers who are selling food to be available form 3.30pm to help set up etc. If you are intending to bring some food into school can you please read and fill out the slip on the back of the letter that has been sent out and hand it in to Ms Broadway by Monday 8th October so that we can anticipate the number of dishes being brought in to sell. Thank you in advance for your support. If you intend to buy some food on the day you may want to consider bringing your own containers in which to take food away with you. We look forward to seeing the children dressed up next week and to any amazing food dishes that are brought in to sell.

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

GRIT

Grit comprises six dispositions: Perseverance Managing Distractions

Resilience Patience

Concentration Determination

At School

• At part of our 6 pillars we continuously stress the importance to the children about managing distractions and concentrating during their learning time. • It is essential that from Reception upwards that the children become better at managing distractions and demonstrate that they can work on a task for a sustained period of time. • We always encourage a ‘can do’ resilient attitude and talk to the children about the importance of not giving up on a task too easily, even when it presents as a challenge, learning that ‘practice makes perfect’. • We discuss that having patience and trying something again, even though we may find it difficult, will lead to success. We also explain that patient can also mean not having what we want instantly and that sometimes we have to wait our turn.

At Home

Encourage your child to try and complete things more independently – when they say they can’t do something – tell your child to have a go and to try a little harder. If then they are still completely stuck with a task, then offer a small amount of help to get them started. Offer encouragement and praise your child’s effort. Talk to your child about how you learned to do things and how hard some things were for you too but through not giving up, being determined and practising you got better.
