Safeguarding Children As part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children. www.nspcc.org.uk
School Uniform Purchases The Primary uniform can be purchased through the Khalsa Schoolwear website or can be bought at Khalsa Schoolwear shop in Bethnal Green. To save on the cost of delivery charges, Khalsa Schoolwear does a school delivery once every month. You can find further details of the delivery dates on their website or you can ask the reception office staff. Khalsa Schoolwear will also be selling the school uniform in the Secondary school on Tuesday 25th July whereby you can try on items for size and will be entitled to a ‘start of term’ discount.

From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher It’s been another fun and very busy week at INA Primary. hopefully no one is aching too much from their Olympianlike performances on Monday! Please keep checking for details of events over the coming fortnight. We received two lovely emails this week in response to the fantastic phonics work that goes on daily at INA Primary that made me feel enormously proud of our children and the staff. They were with particular reference to the fabulous Year 1 Phonics results that the children achieved this year. The first was from Mel Erwin, the Director of Ruth Miskin Phonics Training, praising the teachers who show ‘such commitment to success for every child, exactly what all schools should do. A huge well done to all involved. Your children will now move to Year 2 with the best chance of being fluent, comprehending readers.’ The second email followed shortly the next day from Ruth Miskin herself, ‘And from me…Fabulous news to finish a Friday. Very well done!’ Well done to all the Year 1 team and congratulations to Ms Ali for her relentless leadership in phonics across the school.
Lost Blazers I have had a few parents in recent weeks telling me that their child has lost their blazer. We ask first of all that you check with your child’s teacher and the lost property box in the office. Could I kindly ask you all to check your child’s blazer in case they have taken the wrong one home in error. Can I also remind you that it is very important to label your child’s clothing and check this after a number of washes; having their name inside their clothes helps enormously in getting items back to their owners. 07 July 2017

Year 3 School Meals Payments As you may be aware, Universal Free School Meals were introduced in order to ensure that every pupil from Reception to Year 2 receives a hot meal for lunch every day whilst at school, free of charge. In September 2017 your child will be moving into Year 3 and you will therefore be required to make payment of £2.20 per day for school meals using Wisepay, the Academy’s online payment system. In line with our family dining vision/policy, all pupils will receive a hot meal every day. Food or drink brought in from home will not be permitted in school. It is important that you are familiar with using Wisepay and that you keep your account topped up with at least £11 per week (the cost of 1 week’s meals) as payments will be automatically deducted from your child’s account daily unless your child is absent from school. Pupils receiving free school meals will not be required to make payments for lunch. Ms Chaggar will be holding drop in sessions for all parents who need support on how to use Wisepay. This will also be a good opportunity to ask any questions related to lunch payments. Sessions will be held on Wednesday 12th July at 9.00am and Thursday 13th July at 6.00pm. She will be able to show you how to log in, look into any errors (reset password), and go through how to make a payment and help merge accounts for siblings. Please let Ms Chaggar or Ms Khanum know which of these sessions you will be attending. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office for further information.

Primary Sports Day On Monday we all enjoyed a fun-filled Primary Sports Day. The weather conditions were perfect and I am sure you will all agree when I say that it was a brilliant day! It was great to see so many parents and carers supporting the children and getting into the spirit of the event. Seeing so many willing parents take part in the races was superb and highlights what great role models you are to the children every day. This week we have been working on ‘Bravery’ and we talked during Monday’s assembly about leadership, optimism, risk-taking and courage, habits that I believe the children demonstrated in abundance. Well done everyone! I would like to thank all the staff who supported but in particular Ms Hutson and Ms Young, along with the Student Leaders, for hosting and organising a fabulous event and experience for the primary children.

Amazing Animals Mr Clift-Matthews, the Head of Science, brought over his ‘Amazing Animals’ to visit the Reception children this week. Ordinarily the animals live with the science department in the Secondary school, but Mr Clift-Matthews thought they may enjoy a change of scenery for the afternoon. The children used a number of their BRIDGES habits, especially their Bravery and Discovery dispositions as they learned about the animals, and for some, were brave enough to hold the snake!

Enrichment This week the ‘Boys and Fathers’ enrichment club took the opportunity to focus on their construction and design skills. They were presented with two challenges to complete: the first to construct the tallest freestanding tower built from marshmallows and spaghetti, the second to construct a bridge out of paper and masking tape to hold a kilo weight. The temperature in the classroom provided a challenge to the on-going structural integrity of the marshmallows as they started to soften and melt. Ultimately fun was had by all.

Summer Fayre We are now beginning to plan and prepare for the Summer Fayre on Wednesday 19th July. We would like to ask you to bring in any second hand toy donations. Any donations must be in good working order, in their complete condition and clean so that they can be sold or raffled off on the day. We have also been asked by a number of parents about what to do with items of uniform that the children have outgrown and of which are still in excellent condition. We therefore ask you over the next few weeks to bring in any items of used uniform that could be sold on a stall at the Summer Fayre. This helps you see the clothes go to a good home and be of use to another family at a fraction of the cost of buying brand new items as well as helping the school to raise some funds. Thanks you in advance for any donations of toys or uniform.

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton
BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a wellrounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we are working on, which rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week is always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher awards a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Resourcefulness At School • It is important that the pupils are able to use and remember their vast phonics, spelling and vocabulary knowledge and apply this information when beginning to write independently. The children imitate familiar stories and characters they know and apply these to their own stories. • As adults we are acutely aware that we model behaviours for the pupils every day during lunchtime when we eat with our knife and fork, avoid talking when our mouth is full, wash our hands, dress and present ourselves appropriately etc., knowing that the children will imitate the behaviour they see. • As well as being able to read the sounds and words on pages, the pupils now need to be able to question, reason and comprehend the text they read and explain what is happening. In Maths the children need to apply and transfer their knowledge to different problems and also to give reason for the way they have worked out the answers. • Every classroom has a recycling bin which we encourage the children to use and we also look at how we can use materials around us to incorporate them in pieces of art or other areas of our work before we throw things away.

Resourcefulness comprises ten dispositions: Questioning Remembering Imitating
Making Connections Transferring Adaptability
Flexibility Reasoning Scavenging Recycling
At Home Encourage your child to use items around the house to create a piece of art or make junk models and re-cycle as many items as possible. Ask questions: What could we use this box for instead of throwing it away? Do you think we could make a car, boat or castle from this large box we have? How can we use some of the things we have around the home and turn them into something more useful? When your child finds reading a word difficult or a maths question challenging, ask them to remember and use the things they do know and apply it to the new word or challenge etc. Ask your child lots of questions when you are listening to them read at home – some obvious to find answers but also so more tricky questions eg. Why do you think …? Why did the character …? How do you know…? Encourage your child to use their spelling and vocabulary knowledge to extend the level of interest in their writing. Get them to use familiar story characters, settings or plots to base their own stories upon. Perhaps they could scavenge interesting words from stories they read and create their own ‘interesting word dictionary’ to use whenever they are writing independently at home. Remind your child that it is important to adapt their behaviour according to the occasion or place, as parents you will of course role-model how to behave, and encourage imitation.
