Safeguarding Children As part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children. www.nspcc.org.uk

From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher We hope you all had a lovely half term. We have enjoyed a busy first week back and the children have shown their excitement in starting their new topics and enrichment clubs. It is hard to believe that we are now in our last half term of the academic year and we are already busy planning and preparing for September. This half term will prove to be a busy one, so do please check the various key dates at the end of the newsletter. Topic information sheets are available online under the Home Learning tab and Parent Information. These sheets are designed to help inform you about your child’s learning for the half term as well as give you information regarding any texts they will be using and suggest some ideas on how to support your child at home. The Pupil Progress Reports will be sent out this term on Friday 13th July, these will include the SATs scores and converted levels for Year 2 pupils and the Phonics Screening Scores for Year 1. The Parent Progress Meetings will take place on Tuesday 17th July; school will finish at 12.15pm on this day as well as the last day of term on Friday 20th July. Finally, many of our families will be celebrating Eid next week. In the event that Eid falls on Friday 15th June, a leave of absence will need to be completed (and submitted to the school in advance) by any parent who would like their child to be granted time off school for religious observation for part or all of this day. All requests regarding leave of absences required for Eid must be made on a Leave of Absence form which must be fully completed and handed into the Academy by 9am on Tuesday Morning (12th June) at the latest. Forms received after this deadline may not be authorised. Requests for leave will not be accepted over the phone, by email or as a note. All Eid requests need to be made in advance. Any requests made on the day of Eid will not be authorised. Please be aware that only 1 day (Friday 15th June) will be authorised. If Eid falls on Saturday 16th June then pupils are expected to attend school as usual on Friday 15th June.
Parents Invited for an INA Lunch A day each week has been set-aside for parents to come along and enjoy a lunch with their child. There are still some spaces available so if you would like to sign up for a lunch over the course of the half term, please give the office staff a call for further details including the dates available and the lunch on offer on particular days. There are limited spaces available so places will be filled on a first come basis. 08 June 2018

This week, the Year 3 pupils have been investigating volume and capacity in their maths lessons. We have learned that there are 1000 millilitres in every litre. The children had the opportunity to use measuring equipment to determine the capacity of different containers. They then used their findings to create inequality equations to compare the different volumes.

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

GRIT Grit comprises six dispositions: Perseverance Managing Distractions
Resilience Patience
Concentration Determination
At School • At part of our 6 pillars we continuously stress the importance to the children about managing distractions and concentrating during their learning time. • It is essential that from Reception upwards that the children become better at managing distractions and demonstrate that they can work on a task for a sustained period of time. • We always encourage a ‘can do’ resilient attitude and talk to the children about the importance of not giving up on a task too easily, even when it presents as a challenge, learning that ‘practice makes perfect’. • We discuss that having patience and trying something again, even though we may find it difficult, will lead to success. We also explain that patient can also mean not having what we want instantly and that sometimes we have to wait our turn.
At Home Encourage your child to try and complete things more independently – when they say they can’t do something – tell your child to have a go and to try a little harder. If then they are still completely stuck with a task, then offer a small amount of help to get them started. Offer encouragement and praise your child’s effort. Talk to your child about how you learned to do things and how hard some things were for you too but through not giving up, being determined and practising you got better.
