Safeguarding Children As part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children. www.nspcc.org.uk
Uniform Deliveries to School The Primary uniform can be purchased through the Khalsa Schoolwear website or can be bought at Khalsa Schoolwear shop in Bethnal Green. To save on the cost of delivery charges, Khalsa Schoolwear does a school delivery once every month. You can find further details of the delivery dates on their website or you can ask the reception office staff. • Year 1 and 2 pupils are expected to be wearing a blazer; this is still an optional item for the Reception children. Please speak to the staff in the primary reception if you have any queries. • We expect every child to be in full uniform every day with their top button done up • All coats must be plain black • Shoes must be plain black – no trainers or boots! If you are not sure about the types of shoes that are part of our uniform policy, please ask! • Please label every item of clothing

From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher We hope you all had a lovely half term – we have enjoyed a busy first week back and the children have shown their excitement in starting their new topics and enrichment clubs. It is hard to believe that we are now in our last half term of the academic year and we are already busy planning and preparing for September. This half term will prove to be a busy one, so do please check the various key dates at the end of the newsletter. A parent information sheet has been put into your child’s book bag to help you with ideas on how to support your child this half term, along with information about the topic and what will be covered. The Pupil Progress Reports will be sent out this term on Friday 14th July; these will include the SATs scores and converted levels for Year 2 pupils and the Phonics Screening Scores for Year 1. The Parent Progress Meetings will take place on Tuesday 18th July. School will finish at 12.15pm on this day as well as on the last day of term on Friday 21st July.
Messages from Ms Chaggar • Parents are reminded to call the school to inform us of your child’s absence by 8:15am for everyday of your child will be away. Please leave a clear message on the absence line with your child’s full name, class and symptoms. • Pupils are not to be collected early from school unless this has been agreed and discussed beforehand with the Headteacher. • Appointments are to be booked outside of school hours where possible. • The office staff are more than willing to show you how to access the system to book enrichment clubs if you need support and will happily supply log-in details if they have been misplaced.

Dear Parents, I hope that you all enjoyed a good break over half term. Sadly the terrible events in Central London on the night of Saturday 3rd June overshadowed the holiday. We are very aware at the current time that our students may be experiencing feelings of anxiety, confusion and anger. They will have questions and concerns and it is our job to provide a safe space for those who wish to do so to raise queries and to discuss their feelings. Our number one priority is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported and our procedures in school are designed to enable this. Staff will be especially vigilant for any signs of distress or tension in the coming weeks. We have a number of school trips due to go out in the last weeks of term. Several of these are GCSE related or have been designed to recognise students for notable achievements. We are keen that these opportunities are not denied to our students. However we have redone risk assessments in the light of the recent terror attacks and increased staffing levels for trips going into Central London. We would also understand if any parent wished to remove their child from a particular out of school learning experience (although we cannot guarantee a refund of monies paid in advance). Please contact Ms Broadway if you would like to discuss such a request. Many of our families will be celebrating Eid on 25th June. In the event that Eid falls on Monday 26th June, a leave of absence request will need to be made (and submitted to the school in advance) by any parent who would like their child to be granted time off school for religious observation for part or all of this day. And finally, the arrangements for the start of the new term in September are as follows: Monday 4th September 2017 • Staff INSET: no students Tuesday 5th September • Staff INSET: no students Wednesday 6th September • Reception in for Meet the Teacher (1 hour per class) • Year 7 in from 1.30pm

Thursday 7th September • Reception in from 11.00 – 13.00pm • Years 1, 2 & 3 in from 1.30 -3.30pm • Years 7 & 12 in from 8.25am • Years 8-11 in from 1.30pm Friday 8th September • All students in for the full day

Summer Fayre We are now beginning to plan and prepare for the Summer Fayre on Wednesday 19th July. We would like to ask you to bring in any second hand toy donations. Any donations must be in good working order, in their complete condition and clean so that they can be sold or raffled off on the day. We have also been asked by a number of parents about what to do with items of uniform that the children have outgrown but which are still in excellent condition. We would therefore ask that over the next few weeks you bring in any items of used uniform that could be sold on a stall at the Summer Fayre. This helps to ensure that the clothes go to a good home and are of use to another family at a fraction of the cost of buying brand new items, as well as helping the school to raise some funds. Thank you in advance for any donations of toys or uniform.

The School STOMP To raise money for charity this half term, and to stay fit at the same time, we are taking on the ‘School STOMP challenge’ which supports ‘Health Poverty Action’. The charity encourages children to think about health and poverty whilst raising money for some of the world’s poorest communities. We will have a charity representative visiting the school on Monday during assembly to talk to the children about the work they do. As a way of sponsoring your child, we ask that each pupil brings in £1 by Friday 16th June prior to them engaging with a fun activity in during their PE lesson the following week. You can find out further information on the website below to discuss the work of the charity in greater detail with your child at home. https://www.healthpovertyaction.org/support-our-work/get-involved/ schools/schoolstomp/

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton
BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a wellrounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

GRIT
Grit comprises six dispositions: Perseverance Managing Distractions
Resilience Patience
Concentration Determination
At School
• As part of our 6 pillars we continuously stress the importance to the children about managing distractions and concentrating during their learning time. • It is essential that from Reception upwards the children become better at managing distractions and demonstrating that they can work on a task for a sustained period of time. • We always encourage a ‘can do’ resilient attitude and talk to the children about the importance of not giving up on a task too easily, even when it presents as a challenge, learning that ‘practice makes perfect’. • We discuss that having patience and trying something again, even though we may find it difficult, will lead to success. We also explain that patience can also mean not having what we want instantly and that sometimes we have to wait our turn.
At Home
Encourage your child to try to complete things more independently – when they say they can’t do something, tell them to have a go and to try a little harder. If then they are still completely stuck with a task, offer a small amount of help to get them started. Offer encouragement and praise your child’s effort. Talk to your child about how you learned to do things and how hard some things were for you too but how, through not giving up, being determined and practising you got better.
