The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher It has certainly been a bitterly cold week, but it hasn’t put us off having lots of fun. With a few busy weeks ahead and lots of events happening, I urge you to take time to read over the dates and times. Please ask if you are unsure about of any of the information included. Just to remind you that the school will be closed to students on Monday 26th November for staff training and development. The Primary is open as usual on Tuesday 27th November. I hope you all took the opportunity on Wednesday to share a great learning experience with your child or to visit somewhere new and exciting. The children have been busy writing up and reflecting on their learning. The primary staff spent the day in various ways with some visiting museums in preparation for subsequent trips, visiting other outstanding schools to share great practice and ideas whilst some spent the day researching and developing plans for our pupils as they move into Years 5 & 6 over the coming few years.
Friends of Isaac Newton Academy I am hoping to get parents from both Primary and Secondary together who would be interested in setting up a new FOINA (Friends of Isaac Newton Academy) group, with the purpose of planning fundraising events for the school throughout the year. If you are interested and hadn't done so before, in the summer term, I ask that you sign up with either the Primary or Secondary reception staff, the deadline for which will be Friday 30th November, after which we will organise an initial meeting before the end of term to start thinking about events we can plan for the rest of the academic year. Reading Books Now that the children are taking books home to read, it is very important that they bring them back in to school on the appropriate day whether they have finished reading it or not. If the children do not bring their books in it prevents them from being able to choose a new book or to participate fully during reading lessons. The following days are when Year 1 pupils need to bring in their home reading book to change each week, without doing so your child will not receive another book. Thank you for your support.

T
NEWS
his week in newsletter club, we have written a review of ‘Mathemagical’ week. We hope that you enjoy reading about how we have incorporated maths into …. everything!
What is ‘Mathemagical’ week? Mathemagical week is a week where you include maths in all of your lessons. The word Mathemagical comes from the words ‘mathematics’ and ‘magical’. During this magical week, we participated in lots of fun maths activities, made some fantastic projects, and even used our maths at home. Fun Fact: Ms Broadway was the creator of Mathemagical week and she even came up with the name herself!
How can we use maths in everyday life? We use maths every day in some way, and it is very essential that we do so! Here are some ways in which we can incorporate maths into our everyday life: • When we check what time we need to wake up (by working backwards from the time that we need to arrive somewhere). • When we use maths when cooking, where we figure out the weight of each ingredient. • When we count how much money we spend at the shop (and make sure that we get the correct change!) • When we find shapes and angles that exist all around us. • When we measure how tall we are – and how much we have grown over the years!

23 November 2018 How has being ‘Mathemagical’ impacted upon our learning? Mathemagical week has impacted our life by helping us to understand that maths is all around us – more so than we at first thought! It has also impacted our school life, as we have found new and exciting ways to use maths in all of our lessons. For example: In PE, we made our bodies into different shapes, and figured out how many sides were on each shape. In maths, we did lots of codebreaking and even figured out secret messages, and in History, some of us even used our shapes in order to make accurate representations of famous historical landmarks. We also took our ‘Mathemagicalness’ home with us, and we created lots of different maths projects, such as: PowerPoints, maths puzzles, maths board games, posters, and even music videos! We had an amazing time during ‘Mathemagical’ week, and we can’t wait for it to happen again next year!

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Curiosity At School •
•
•
•
We make our lessons as fun and interactive every day so that every child loves learning and have a sense of enthusiasm with everything they do. Our lessons are very hands on and we ask the children to share their learning with the ‘talk partners’. We talk to the children about looking out for the details on things around them, to look closely at the bugs and the leaves in the playground and what happens to everything as the seasons change. We encourage the children to check their work and try to spot any errors they may have made. Through our topic approach we engender a sense of curiosity and wonder in the children where they are keen to go home and find out more. We talk about human characteristics and traits and what makes us all the same but equally what makes us different and that it is good to have differences and to appreciate them with an open mind. Every area of the curriculum helps the children to become more creative –either through role-play, stories, music and PE – helping the children to use their imaginations.
At Home •
•
•
Encourage your child to use their imagination by making up stories together, or suggesting ways in which they could change parts of a story they know well , either change the gender of the characters, have them go on a different adventure etc. Pupils love to role play different characters and it is often even more fun when the adults join in too. Play along and have fun! Play games with your child like ‘I spy’ where you can see how many things they can notice beginning with a certain sound or letter they may already know or ask your child to think about an object and describe it using powerful adjectives. Ask questions like ‘I wonder what would happen if…?’ or ‘what do you think might happen if?’ or ‘why do you think…? These types of deeper questions will encourage the children to use their creativity and imagination more fully. Either independently or with help, encourage your child to read or research more information around the topics they have been studying in class. The children could also spend time researching our current composer.
