Safeguarding Children As part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children. www.nspcc.org.uk
Uniform Deliveries to School The Primary uniform can be purchased through the Khalsa Schoolwear website or can be bought at Khalsa Schoolwear shop in Bethnal Green. To save on the cost of delivery charges, Khalsa Schoolwear does a school delivery once every month. You can find further details of the delivery dates on their website or you can ask the reception office staff. • Year 1 and 2 pupils are expected to be wearing a blazer; this is still an optional item for the Reception children. Please speak to the staff in the primary reception if you have any queries. • We expect every child to be in full uniform every day with their top button done up • All coats must be plain black • Shoes must be plain black – no trainers or boots! If you are not sure about the types of shoes that are part of our uniform policy, please ask! • Please label every item of clothing

From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher It is hard to believe that another half term is almost at an end. The children break up next Friday 26th May, finishing at the usual time of 3.45pm. All enrichment clubs will continue next week as normal.
A Message from the Reception Team Next week the children will be reading the ‘Whatever Next’ book. To help bring the book to life it would be great if each child could bring a pair of Wellington boots to school with them and if anyone has any cardboard boxes big enough for a child to sit in, then could you please drop them off to your child’s teacher.

Exciting Learning this Week As part of a Year 1 maths lesson this week, the pupils were learning to apply their mathematic skills to some real life situations. Using standard units of mass (Kgs and grams), the children learned how to weigh out different quantities of the various ingredients needed to bake their delicious cookies. What a great way to learn maths!

Enrichment Calling all Male Role Models Earlier in the year during one of the Coffee Mornings, we discussed ways in which we can support boys’ achievement. Nationally we hear of an attainment gap between boys and girls and at INA we want to do everything we can to support the achievement of our boys, without the exclusion of the girls of course. Next half term we are inviting any fathers who have some time available to join and help out with our enrichment clubs. If you are available to help out with a particular club every week or can offer a one-off hour over the course of next half term, then please contact the reception team. The list of clubs and the days they are running is now live on the enrichment app. It does not matter if you have a son or daughter in the school; we are looking for male role models to help out whatever.
Boys-Only Enrichment Club Next half term we will also going be running a ‘Fathers and Sons’ enrichment club. If you are interested in participating with your son, you will need to be available from 4.00-5.00pm each week for the half term. Each week will focus on a different activity, led by Mr Marshall-Jones, which you will participate jointly in with your son e.g. cooking, reading, team sport and writing. You will need to sign up for this club on the enrichment app.

Message from Ms Ali Thank you to the all Year 1 parents who attended this week’s parent workshop on phonics. It was great to see so many parents who were receptive and had lots of great questions. The most important information to take away from the session would be: • Practise those sounds daily, especially during the holiday. (Some children need to see each sound at least fifty times before they remember it effortlessly). • Our strategy for reading unfamiliar or new words is : Special Friends, Fred Talk and Blend. • Encourage independence in reading. Guide, do not tell. (Can they notice their own mistakes and self-correct?) Happy Reading!

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton
BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a wellrounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Integrity Integrity comprises six dispositions: Citizenship Honesty
Justice Fairness
Humility Humanity
At School
• At school we encourage the pupils to make sure they play in a kind and thoughtful way and ensure that they include others in their games. Games where ‘turn-taking’ is needed are great at helping the children to understand that everyone has fair turn. • It is also important that the children learn how to win and lose a game graciously and show humility when they win or congratulate the winner and say well done if they lose. • The children need to learn to understand the importance of telling the truth even when it feels uncomfortable when we have to admit that we have done something wrong. They also need to learn to take responsibility for their actions and not get into a habit of blaming others. It is important that the children have a moral sense of right and wrong. • Each half term the class teacher chooses two ambassadors to help the pupils develop their citizenship skills and to help with jobs in their class or at lunchtimes. • We encourage every child to help keep the school environment clean by clearing away plates or cups after lunch or tidying up their own table place after activities in class.
At Home
Talk to your child about how they can be a good citizen within their community, by not dropping litter etc. Talk about what is fair and encourage your child to help out at home with tidying their room or books away so that they develop a sense of responsibility and respect towards theirs and others’ property. Reinforce the message about always telling the truth and why this is important. When you are reading stories together with your child, discuss characters, their behaviour and moral decision and whether they are good or bad characters and why. What should the character have done instead? etc. 19 May 2017
