Safeguarding Children As part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children. www.nspcc.org.uk

From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher I can hardly believe that the first half term has gone by already. It only seems like five minutes ago that we were welcoming the children back after the summer holiday and settling the Reception children into their new classes. It has been a busy and fantastic half term and I am feeling incredibly proud of how hard everyone has worked and how much has been learnt. I hope you all have a lovely half term break and look forward to seeing you all again on Monday 29th October, feeling refreshed and ready to go again!

BRIDGES Parent Workshop Wednesday 31st October - 6pm

This workshop is an opportunity to learn more about the BRIDGES framework and how parents can support their children to grow their BRIDGES dispositions. Location: Primary School

All parents are welcome from primary and secondary

Message from Mr Coughlin (Year 4 Music)

In Year 4, we are really lucky to have the Primary Band Project this year at INA. Mr Coughlin, our Head of Music, will be holding a meeting for our Year 4 parents on Thursday 1st November at 9am and again at 6pm to introduce them to the Year 4 music curriculum. Mr Coughlin will spend time talking about the instruments our Year 4 pupils will be learning to play. He will also explain the process of loaning the instruments so that the children will be able to take them home to practise, which we aim to have up and running later this academic year. If you are a Year 4 parent, it is really important that you come along to find out more about this new opportunity and also to ask any questions you may have. 19 October 2018 Primary Newsletter

Mathemagical Maths Week Week beginning 5th November

In the aim of raising the profile of mathematics as a lifelong skill that we use every day, we are holding a ‘Mathemagical Maths Week’. The staff are busy planning ways in which they can make mathematical links to every curriculum area and ensuring that the week will be a fun one! We ask that you encourage and support your child at home and get them to do as much thinking about their use of maths at home or during their visits to the shops, walk to school etc. It would be great to ask the children during the half term how they have been using their magical maths skills in different subjects at school, not just maths and in other context and settings around them.

Mathematics Mastery Workshop Thursday 8th November 9am & 6pm

This workshop has run successfully every year and has really helped parents to gain a greater understanding of the Maths Mastery approach used at INA. Parents will be introduced to the approach and be given strategies to use to support their child at home. To ensure we set out enough space and resources for the event, we ask that that you contact the Primary office staff to confirm your attendance. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Message from the Year 2 Team Next half term we will be creating a theatre in art using cereal boxes, if you have any cereal boxes or boxes of a similar size, please bring in them in so we can put them to great use. Thank you in advance!

Newton's News This week in ‘Newsletter Club’ we produced a poem about our school. We’ve included stanzas and rhyming couplets – see if you can point out the rhyming words! Isaac Newton sat under a tree, An apple fell on his head; he screamed ‘gravity!’ His ideas were great and totally cool, So we took his name and we named our school! We built this school totally from scratch, In our opinion, nothing can match. We love watching our school grow and grow, We love everyone from head to toe! We have a Growth Mindset, we try and we try, We never give up – we reach for the sky. Our wonderful BRIDGES make us who we are, If we use them correctly, we’ll become a star! In our school, we learn more than we can say, We learn brand new things every single day. From reading to science, we’re always on task, Everyone says this, no matter who you ask. Ms Gilley is the best, she cooks amazing food, And she’s always in an incredible mood. We love family dining, it’s as great as can be, Everyone loves this idea – especially me! Our teachers and staff; they really care, It’s hard to deny - they are ultra-rare. Teaching and teaching every single day, Perhaps they need more holiday! This school is amazing – it’s truly the best, We learn so much on our BRIDGES quest. When you look around, all you see are smiles, Our joy stretches onwards for miles and miles! 19 October 2018 Primary Newsletter

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Week commencing 29th October 2018

Self Discipline Self Discipline comprises nine dispositions: Organisation Prudence Hard Work

Absorption Motivation Independence

Revising Practising Self-Regulation

At School •

• • •

We would all like to see the children develop the habits listed above, as they are all essential lifelong skills that are needed for us to successfully manage our way through school, college, and university and certainly throughout our work careers. It is really important that whilst the children are young that we help them develop these habits as quickly as possible – especially organisation, independence and hard work. At school we ensure the pupils understand that every action has a consequence and that when we work hard it can often reap satisfaction and reward. Our pupils work hard day to day to earn their merits for making good choices and demonstrate their efforts. To help the children understand the structure of each day and become better organised, we always start with a visual timetable in Reception. A picture represents each part of the day; this helps the children to understand the daily routines. It is important that that we teach the young people to become more organised and check that they have all of their belongings with them each day.

At Home

At home the children need to practise getting dressed and undressed, managing buttons on shirts and coats etc. and generally become more independent. Helping your child to get organised the night before will help to ensure they have everything they need for their day. It may help to create a visual/pictorial timetable at home to help your child become more organised and to think about when they need their PE kit, home learning, guided reading book etc. This could be displayed in your child’s room or in a central place like the kitchen where you can both check what is needed the night before, ready for the following day. This will allow your child to become more involved in preparing for their learning each day and gaining independence. It is also good to remind your child, as we do in school, to check regularly that they have all of the belongings with them. Congratulate your child’s effort when you see them working hard and for showing an increased motivation with their home learning or reading. Talk to your child about how your own effort to practise and work hard at something led to success and a good feeling of achievement. 19 October 2018 Primary Newsletter
