Safeguarding Children As part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children. www.nspcc.org.uk

From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher We have enjoyed another very hot and glorious week and, whilst this weather continues, we do want to encourage our children to ensure they stay safe by drinking plenty of water and keeping hydrated. Please make sure that your child has their water bottle with them every day, labelled with their name and class on it. We would also suggest that in cases of hot weather the pupils leave their blazers and jumpers at home. It is also advisable to put 24 hour sun protection cream on your child before they come to school in the morning. Please be reminded that the school will be closed on Friday 30th June as this is a staff training day. The Pupil Progress Reports will be sent out this term on Friday 14th July. These will include the SATs scores and converted levels for Year 2 pupils and the Phonics Screening Scores for Year 1. The Parent Progress Meetings will take place on Tuesday 18th July; school will finish at 12.15pm on this day as well as the last day of term on Friday 21st July.
School Uniform Purchases The Primary uniform can be purchased through the Khalsa Schoolwear website or can be bought at Khalsa Schoolwear shop in Bethnal Green. To save on the cost of delivery charges, Khalsa Schoolwear does a school delivery once every month. You can find further details of the delivery dates on their website or you can ask the reception office staff. Khalsa Schoolwear will also be selling the school uniform in the Secondary school on Tuesday 25th July whereby you can try on items for size and will be entitled to a ‘start of term’ discount of 5%.

Summer Fayre We are now beginning to plan and prepare for the Summer Fayre on Wednesday 19th July. We would like to ask you to bring in any second hand toy donations. Any donations must be in good working order, in their complete condition and clean so that they can be sold or raffled off on the day. We have also been asked by a number of parents about what to do with items of uniform that the children have outgrown and which are still in excellent condition. We therefore ask you over the next few weeks to bring in any items of used uniform that could be sold on a stall at the Summer Fayre. This helps you see the clothes go to a good home and be of use to another family at a fraction of the cost of buying brand new items. It also helps the school to raise some funds. Thank you in advance for any donations of toys or uniform.

Enrichment This week the ‘Boys and Fathers’ enrichment club took the opportunity to focus on their culinary skills and made pizzas and chocolate truffles. Everybody got fully involved, even when it came to cleaning up at the end. Hopefully some of the great food made it home to be shared with the wider family.

Lovely Learning this Week One the best things about being an all through school is getting the Primary and Secondary students learning together. Year 9 students were very excited by the prospect of planning and teaching a Spanish lesson on animals to some Year 2 pupils this week. This gave the Secondary students a great insight into the skills of teaching and an opportunity to share their Spanish knowledge, whilst the Primary pupils were given a great taster in preparation for when they start to learn a language next year in Year 3. A huge thank you to the Year 9 students for their time and preparation and to Ms Brett for organising the event.

The Year 2 teachers utilised the sunshine this week and surprised their classes with their very own Roof Top Beach. In preparation for their upcoming trip to Southend and to enhance their understanding of coastal areas, the pupils had fun lounging in the deck chair, building sandcastles on their beach and paddling in the pool! What a life!!

Year 3 School Meals Payments As you may be aware, Universal Free School Meals were introduced in order to ensure that every pupil from Reception to Year 2 receives a hot meal for lunch every day whilst at school, free of charge. In September 2017 your child will be moving into Year 3 and you will therefore be required to make payment of £2.20 per day for school meals using Wisepay, the Academy’s online payment system. In line with our family dining vision/policy, all pupils will receive a hot meal every day. Food or drink brought in from home will not be permitted in school. It is important that you are familiar with using Wisepay and that you keep your account topped up with at least £11 per week (the cost of 1 week’s meals) as payments will be automatically deducted from your child’s account daily unless your child is absent from school. Pupils receiving free school meals will not be required to make payments for lunch. Ms Chaggar will be holding drop in sessions for all parents who need support on how to use Wisepay. This will also be a good opportunity to ask any questions related to lunch payments. Sessions will be held on Wednesday 12th July at 9.00am and Thursday 13th July at 6.00pm. She will be able to show you how to log in, look into any errors (reset password), and go through how to make a payment and help merge accounts for siblings. Please let Ms Chaggar or Ms Khanum know which of these sessions you will be attending. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office for further information.

Primary Sports Day Monday 3rd July
On Monday 3rd July every pupil will have the opportunity to take part in the INA Primary Sports Day! This takes place at the fantastic athletics facility of Cricklefield Stadium next to INA. Pupils will be taking part in track and field events including running, throwing and jumping to represent their class. The timings are slightly different this year, with the Reception Sports Day taking place in the morning from 10.45am-12.30pm and Year 1 and 2 in the afternoon from 1.45pm-4pm. An information letter and 2 spectator tickets will be allocated to each child that will go home in their book bags. If you require more tickets, please contact reception and we will do our best to see if there are any spare tickets available. On the day we ask that you provide your child with water, a hat and sun cream if the weather is hot. If we experience bad weather on the day and we have to cancel the event, you will receive a text to this effect on the day and your child will stay at school as per their normal routine. We look forward to seeing you all there! PLEASE NOTE: No photography / no ticket no entry / spectators must remain in the allocated stands for the duration of the afternoon

Breakfast and After School Club Every parent has Wisepay details and a password, which will enable you to book a place for ‘Breakfast Club’ or ‘After School Club’. Payments must be made in advance. If you experience any problems, please contact Ms Chaggar who will be happy to help. Breakfast is available each day from 7.45am and costs just £2.50 per day. The children enjoy a range of cereals, toast and different topping, juice or milk and fruit. Any child attending must be brought to the main reception area by 8.20am at the latest. After School Club runs from 3.45pm – 6.00pm (3.00pm – 6.00pm on Tuesdays) and costs just £5.50 per hour. The children enjoy a range of snacks each evening and a variety of games and activities.

Wonderful Writing Week Week beginning 26th June With the aim of raising the profile of writing across the school, next week will be a ‘Wonderful Writing Week’. This of course does not mean that we would not expect wonderful writing every week, but it is a great way to encourage the pupils to really show us what they can do. We ask that you encourage and support your child at home during the week and get them to do as much writing as possible. This could be in the form of a shopping list, a letter, story writing or instructions for a recipe or game – anything at all. For the Reception children we would like them to practise writing simple sentences using their sounds. In Year 1, we are looking for neat writing and sentences using the correct punctuation, some conjunctions and adjectives. Year 2 now need to ensure their handwriting is neat and joined and that their sentences make full sense. Year 2 also should be able to demonstrate a range of punctuation, accurately spelling familiar words and making sensible attempts with unfamiliar words. At the end of the week two children from each class will be awarded a certificate in recognition of their hard work and effort. Thank you for your support!

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges.� Isaac Newton
BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a wellrounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Self Discipline At School
• We would all like to see the children develop the habits listed above, as they are all essential lifelong skills that are needed for us to successfully manage our way through school, college, university and our work careers. It is really important that whilst the children are young we help them develop these habits as quickly as possible – especially organisation, independence and hard work. • At school we ensure the pupils understand that every action has a consequence and that when we work hard it can often reap satisfaction and reward. Our pupils work hard day to day to earn their merits for making good choices and demonstrate their efforts. • To help the children understand the structure of each day and become better organised, we always start with a visual timetable in Reception. A picture represents each part of the day; this helps the children to understand the daily routines. • It is important that that we teach the young people to become more organised and check that they have all of their belongings with them each day.

At Home
At home the children need to practise getting dressed and undressed, managing buttons on shirts and coats etc. and generally becoming more independent. Helping your child to get organised the night before will help to ensure that they have everything they need for their day. It may help to create a visual/pictorial timetable at home to help your child become more organised and to think about when they need their PE kit, home learning, guided reading book etc. This could be displayed in your child’s room or in a central place like the kitchen where you can both check what is needed the night before, ready for the following day. This will allow your child to become more involved in preparing for their learning each day and gaining independence. It is also good to remind your child, as we do in school, to check regularly that they have all of the belongings with them. Congratulate your child’s effort when you see them working hard and showing an increased motivation with their home learning or reading. Talk to your child about how your own effort to practice and work hard at something led to success and a good feeling of achievement.
