Safeguarding Children As part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children. www.nspcc.org.uk

From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher It was a great turnout for the Parent Progress Meetings on Tuesday. As always we enjoy the opportunity to work in partnership with you, to discuss your child’s progress and attainment for the term and to also share the next steps and ways in which you can help your child at home. I hope you took the opportunity to ask lots of questions about your child’s report, learning and to have a good look through your child’s books. We understand that there were some technical difficulties this time, making it harder for some parents to sign up to a time slot. If this should happen in the future, it is very important that you speak to office staff who will be happy to assist you in booking slots. It is important that everyone signs up for a slot in good time prior to the meetings.
Reception Parents’ Information Evening Wednesday 2nd May at 6pm (For September 2018 starters) This meeting is aimed at parents whose child is starting Isaac Newton Primary in September. If you are a parent with an older sibling already attending the school, we would still advise that you come along to the meeting as you will need to pick up the pack of documents that must to be filled in prior to your home visit. There have also been some changes to the documents and the information we require from you. We have also made changes to the way in which we will be allocating time slots for home visits so we would highly recommend you attend so that you can choose a slot most suitable for you.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE Dear Parents Isaac Newton Academy works closely with the Redbridge Education Welfare Service. Regular and punctual attendance at school is both a legal requirement and essential for pupils to maximise their educational and social opportunities. In law an offence occurs if a parent/carer fails to secure a child’s regular attendance at a school at which they are a registered pupil and that absence is not authorised by the school. It has come to our attention that an increasing number of parents are taking their children out of school during school term time. In accordance with Redbridge attendance strategy, these absences are unauthorised and Penalty Notices can be issued: “A Headteacher should only consider authorising an absence during term time where an application has been made in advance and where s/he is satisfied that there are exceptional or special circumstance to justify the request.” The DfE (2013) now stated that leave of absence requested for holidays should not be granted. Primary Parent Survey Feedback Many thanks to those of you who completed the primary parent questionnaire last term; we had over 100 responses. Amongst other things, you gave us positive feedback about why you chose INA for your child and how it has lived up to your expectations, the newsletter and our website. You raised points about the lunch menus which we will take on board. I would like to remind you that parents are very welcome to come and sample the menu at lunchtime. If you would like to take up this offer, please contact Ms Chamberlain, FRD. We will also look at ways of communicating more effectively how we deal with any instances of bullying. Some of the headline statistics from the analysis are: • 94% said that their child feels safe at school. • 95% said that their child enjoys school • 93% said that staff care about the pupils • 90% said that their child had grown in confidence since starting at INA • 95% agreed or strongly agreed that staff support their child with his/her learning. • 94% said that staff members encourage their child to do their best and believe in their potential. • 93% said that they agree or strongly agree that the school manages attendance well. • 87% said that rules and consequences are clear. • 98% said that they agreed or strongly agreed that the school is well led and managed. • 92% said that they agreed or strongly agreed that the school has good facilities. Once again, many thanks for providing this valuable feedback. With all best wishes, Jo Spencer Interim Principal

A Message from the Reception Team As part of your child’s learning and demonstrating a ‘good level of development’ for their age, they must be able to dress and undress themselves. This will also help them as they move up to Year 1 in September. Every Friday, the children are expected to come to school in their normal school uniform and will need to bring their PE kit with them to change in to for their afternoon lesson. They will remain in their PE kit for the rest of the day, bringing their school uniform home in their bag. Can you please ensure that every item of clothing is clearly labelled with your child’s name. There is a lost property box in the main reception area for any items found around the school, or for you to drop off any items that your child may have taken home by mistake. In preparation for this transition we suggest that you start getting your child to practise getting dressed and undressed more independently, giving lots of practice to undoing buttons etc.
A Message from Ms Chaggar Please let the school know in good time if you are sending someone else to collect your child from school. The staff will not send a child home with an adult who has not been authorised by the parents/carers. This is in the interests of safeguarding your children. Thank you for your cooperation.

Wonderful Writing Week Week beginning 30th April To raise the profile of writing across the school we hold a ‘Wonderful Writing Week’ once each half term. This of course does not mean that we would not expect wonderful writing every week, but thought it is a great way to encourage the pupils to really show us what they can do. We ask that you encourage and support your child at home during these weeks and get them to do as much writing as possible, this could be in the form of a shopping list, a letter, story writing or instructions for a recipe or game – anything at all. We would like Reception children to practise writing simple sentences, using any sounds they have learned to help them. For Year 1, we are looking for neat writing and sentences with capital letters and full stops and any additional punctuation that they can use. Year 2 now need to ensure their writing makes full sense and that they are beginning to use a range of punctuation, trying hard to spell more accurately familiar and unfamiliar words. Year 3 need to ensure they are beginning to use a wide range of punctuation, spelling with increased accurately both familiar and unfamiliar words and ensuring their handwriting is clearly and neatly formed. At the end of the week two children from each class will be awarded a certificate in recognition of their hard work and effort. Thank you for your support!

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

At School •
• • •
We would all like to see the children develop the habits listed above, as they are all essential lifelong skills that are needed for us to successfully manage our way through school, college, and university and certainly throughout our work careers. It is really important that whilst the children are young that we help them develop these habits as quickly as possible – especially organisation, independence and hard work. At school we ensure the pupils understand that every action has a consequence and that when we work hard it can often reap satisfaction and reward. Our pupils work hard day to day to earn their merits for making good choices and demonstrate their efforts. To help the children understand the structure of each day and become better organised, we always start with a visual timetable in Reception. A picture represents each part of the day; this helps the children to understand the daily routines. It is important that that we teach the young people to become more organised and check that they have all of their belongings with them each day.
At Home
At home the children need to practise getting dressed and undressed, managing buttons on shirts and coats etc. and generally become more independent. Helping your child to get organised the night before will help to ensure they have everything they need for their day. It may help to create a visual/pictorial timetable at home to help your child become more organised and to think about when they need their PE kit, home learning, guided reading book etc. This could be displayed in your child’s room or in a central place like the kitchen where you can both check what is needed the night before, ready for the following day. This will allow your child to become more involved in preparing for their learning each day and gaining independence. It is also good to remind your child, as we do in school, to check regularly that they have all of the belongings with them. Congratulate your child’s effort when you see them working hard and for showing an increased motivation with their home learning or reading. Talk to your child about how your own effort to practise and work hard at something led to success and a good feeling of achievement. 27 April 2018
