We want to encourage the children to have fun but also to stay safe in the hot weather. Please remind your child to by drink plenty of water and stay hydrated by bringing their water bottle to school every day, labelled with their name and class on it. We would also suggest that in cases of hot weather that the pupils leave their blazers and jumpers at home and will not need a vest under their school shirt. Please be reminded that the school will be closed for pupils on Friday 6th July as this is a staff training day. The Pupil Progress Reports will be sent out this term on Friday 13th July, these will include the SATs scores and converted levels for Year 2 pupils and the Phonics Screening Scores for Year 1. Wonderful Writing Week Week beginning 2nd July To raise the profile of writing across the school we hold a ‘Wonderful Writing Week’ once each half term. This of course does not mean that we would not expect wonderful writing every week, but thought it would be great way to encourage the pupils to really show us what they can do. We ask that you encourage and support your child at home during these weeks and get them to do as much writing as possible, this could be in the form of a shopping list, a letter, story writing or instructions for a recipe or game – anything at all. For the Reception children we would like them to practise writing simple sentences, using any sounds they have learned to help them. Year 1, we are looking for neat writing and sentences with capital letters and full stops and any additional punctuation that they can use. Year 2 now need to ensure their writing makes full sense and that they are consistently using a range of punctuation, trying hard to spell more accurately familiar and unfamiliar words and that the handwriting is now beginning to be joined and neat. Year 3 need to ensure they are consistently using a wide range of punctuation, spelling with increased accurately both familiar and unfamiliar words and ensuring their handwriting is clearly and neatly formed with joined cursive handwriting. At the end of the week two children from each class will be awarded a certificate in recognition of their hard work and effort. Thank you for your support!

Year 3 Exciting Learning During Science lessons, we have been learning about the human skeletal system. Thanks to the generosity of the Science department in the secondary school, we were able to show pupils replicas of a skull and spine. The children learned how bones support, protect and facilitate movement.

Year 3 Exciting Learning Year 3 has greatly enjoyed their learning this week. During our maths lessons, we have been consolidating our addition and subtraction strategies by using darts games. Pupils had to achieve the greatest score using the rules of the dart board and were then asked to subtract their totals from an overall amount.

During our art lessons this week, the pupils have been practising proportional drawing by creating standing human figures using the correct dimensions. The children also had the opportunity to peer-evaluate their partner’s drawing.

Barleylands Farm Museum The Reception children enjoyed a fun and sunny day at Barleylands Farm this week. They had an amazing experience of learning where wheat comes from, going into the farm to see the various growing crops, pick some wheat, grinding the wheat into flour, turning the flour into dough and finally making their own bread roll. They were also able to feed some of the farm animals as well as observe some of the farm’s reptiles and birds of prey. The staff at the farm were superbly impressed by the behaviour of our Reception children, although no surprise to us! Thank you so much to the parent volunteers for helping out and giving up your time, you were all fantastic!

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Bravery

Bravery comprises five dispositions: Leadership Optimism

Risk-taking Courage

Experimentation

At School •

• • •

We encourage the children to try new things and experiment every day whether it is a food that they have not tried before or new activities that they may not normally choose during the afternoon sessions. We would encourage the children to try different reading books or authors/topics they might not normally consider reading or to experiment with different art materials and medium – trying to create different effects etc. We always encourage the children to have courage when they fall over and hurt themselves and to remain as calm as possible while we help them. We aim for all pupils to demonstrate their leadership skills by helping others, being smart in their appearance, being kind, having good manners and generally demonstrating all their BRIDGES characteristics. We encourage some of the quieter pupils to have the courage to share their ideas in class and to have work with optimism and develop a real ‘can do’ attitude.

At Home Encourage your child to try as many different things as possible – whether it is food, different enrichment clubs, books etc. Support your child to develop their own mind and not just follow what everyone else is doing. It is important that the pupils are able to try things without worrying about getting it wrong or worrying about what other people think. Celebrate the fact that by making mistakes we are always learning. Give examples of times when you have had to be brave and try something for the first time, or when something did not go so well the first time but you learned from the mistakes you made and got better. Help remind your child at home about being smart in their appearance and role-modelling good behaviour through their leadership skills. Allow your child to help with jobs and roles at home, taking on the responsibility for cleaning their room, keeping their books or toys organised etc.
